A two-step flotation scheme was employed to beneficiate a low-grade, cherty-calcareous rock phosphate ore from the Jhabua district, Madhya Pradesh, India. In the first stage, apatite and calcite ire floated together to remove silica, and, in the second stage, calcite is floated and apatite is depressed. The reagent scheme consists of sodium oleate, sodium silicate, orthophosphoric acid and sulfuric acid. The effect of reagent dosages on the efficiencies of separtition in each stage was studied systematically. A flowsheet was proposed for the processing of a low-grade phosphate ore containing 12.5% P2O5, 26.5% SiO2 and a CaO/P2O5 ratio of 2.64 (=32% calcite). The proposed flowsheet would produce a composite phosphate concentrate containing 27.2% P2O5, 6.37% SiO2 and a much reduced CaO/P205 ratio of 1.66. The total P2O5 recovery for the composite concentrate would be 73% .

The iron mine and beneficiation facilities of Marcona Mining Company are located on the coast of south central Peru. The facilities include an open pit mine, crushing, concentrator containing grinding, magnetic-separation and flotation facilities, pelletizing plants and a completely self sufficient infrastructure. Total production capability is about 10,000,000 DLTPY, of which almost 6,000,000 DLT result from the fine-grind magnetic concentrate. Over 1,500,000 DLT of fine-grind concentrate is obtained from processing high-pyrrhotite ore. Although the orebody contains quantities of oxidized primary ore and transitional ores (mixed magnetite and hematite), the principal ore is predominantly a coarsely crystalline to fine grained massive magnetite.(l-3) In the primary ore the major impurities found are silicates and the iron sulfides- pyrite and pyrrhotite. Sulfur levels typically average about three percent although levels of five percent are not unusual and some ores contain up to ten percent total sulfides. In general the silicates and pyrite are readily rejected from finely ground primary ore by magnetic separation and very basic froth flotation processes. The high iron, low sulfur concentrate produced is particularly suitable for production of high quality oxide pellets. However, pyrrhotite is not removed from the magnetite matrix by either of' these simple beneficiation methods.

INTRODUCTION Insofar as I am aware, the term rock mechanics was not in the English dictionary in 1930 when I started my graduate program at West Virginia University. Hence, I never thought that I was undertaking studies in rock mechanics when I undertook to write a thesis on the physical properties of West Virginia coal. In this case, the subject was primarily concerned with the compressive strength of coal, the elasticity of the coal, the physical weathering properties of the coal and its friability. These days investigations of rocks pertaining to such properties are included in the term "rock mechanics". Other than this aspect, the principle interest in this part of my program was that I became interested in the strength of coal from the standpoint of structural purposes, and also became cognizant of its elastic properties as well as its energy storing properties. This research also tied in with a remark that Professor Lawall made in a Mining Methods class in 1928 when he remarked that a peculiar thing was happening in the southern part of West Virginia, namely, in the Pocahontas coal field. His remarks were to the effect that pillars were blowing up in the mines and when asked why he replied the cause was not known. The failure of three-inch coal specimens, especially those in stronger coal, in non-hydraulic actuated testing machines was reminiscent of his description of those pillar bursts or bumps.

Tunnel construction on the Brightwater Conveyance System?s East and Central contracts required ground modifications of the existing site soils, comprised of sandy alluvium to very dense glacial till, to assist with both hand-mined and TBM tunneling operations at vertical access shafts. The ground modification program was completed with a modified double fluid jet grouting system to construct continuous overlapping soilcrete columns to depths up to 94-ft below existing grade. This paper presents the sequence and methodology for the ground modification work and capabilities of jet grouting for structural support and groundwater control in the challenging soil profile present at the Brightwater Conveyance System Project.

The Bond grindability testing procedure has been standardized to measure the same grindability values, i.e. Bond work index (BWi), for the same ore when tests are performed in different laboratories or by different operators. This is accomplished by the standardization of mill dimensions, tumbling speed, grinding ball charge weight and distribution, sample ore charge weight in the mill and operating practice. The results of this investigation reveal that the Bond work index grindability values may differ substantially with different standard Bond ball mills. This paper will review the results.

The past history of uranium production has been dominated by strip and shaft mining methods, but recently in-situ leaching has emerged as a viable alternative for uranium recovery. (1-8) Mobil was the first company to start in-situ uranium leaching in New Mexico. Mobil's Crownpoint project areas are in Mdinley County and are part of the Grants Mineral Belt. The major uranium deposits in this area occur in the Westwater Canyon Member of the Jurassic Morrison Formation. (9-11) The ore depth at the Crownpoint project is about 2000 ft. In an earlier paper we discussed the uranium mineralogy of an areally broad sampling of Crown- point ore. (12) The organic carbonaceous material often associated with the coffinite ore was characterized in some detail. The organic material appeared to be a very mature, coaly-type kerogen derived from plant components. This result was consistent with other studies on such carbonaceous material. (13-15)

In 1967, development of the Cyprus Thompson Creek molybdenum deposit began near Challis, ID. The first mining claims were staked on an intrusive rock out-crop. Exploration continued for 14 years. In 1978, the decision was made to develop the deposit. In Dec. 1980, approval was received for the environmental impact statement and facilities construction and waste rock removal began. By the middle of 1983, 126 Mt (139 million st) of rock had been removed and all facilities completed. Location The Thompson Creek project is located about 58 km (36 miles) southwest of Challis in Custer County, in south central Idaho. The mine and mill are situated between 2.2 and 2.6 km (7,217 and 8,530 ft) in elevation. The project is located in an isolated area. Annual fish monitoring of the Red River, NM from the town of Red River to downstream of Questa, NM has been conducted since 1997. This long-term dataset, sponsored by the Chevron Mining Inc. Questa Mine provides an opportunity to evaluate the fish community response to natural phenomena, such as landslides and drought. Hydrothermal scars are present on drainages to the Red River, which can contribute large quantities of sediment to the Red River during localized storm events. Sediment inputs from the hydrothermal scars result in decreased habitat and water quality conditions within the Red River. Landslides from the hydrothermal scars contributed large amounts of sediment to the Red River in the summers of 2002 and 2007. Resident trout populations in the Red River after summer 2002 were depressed at sites adjacent to and downstream of the hydrothermal scars. Resident trout populations had begun to recover by 2005 and 2006; however, after the summer 2007 landslide, the resident trout population was again drastically reduced. In fall 2007, 13 resident trout were collected from 11 sites in the approximately 23 km reach of the river, compared to 691 from the same 11 sites in fall 2006. Resident trout density and biomass has gradually increased since fall 2007, and flows have removed sediment from the study reach. A combination of increased sedimentation and decreased water quality were likely responsible for the decreased resident trout populations in the Red River. Drought and the lack of flushing flows appeared to exacerbate the problem of high sedimentation levels from 2001 to 2004. Climate models predict prolonged periods of drought and increased intensity of storm events, potentially resulting in less favorable conditions for the resident trout population of the Red River in this area.

Led by a surge in coal production and prices in recent years, Colorado’s mining industry is taking part in the same revival as others states and the world. Not too many years ago, the state’s industry was languishing in the same doldrums as the rest of the mining world. Ironic for a state whose history was based on mining. Now, however, Colorado’s mining can boast increased production in all commodities produced, along with prices that allowed companies to expand, increase work forces and post improved shareholder value. So there was a lot of optimism at the Colorado Mining Association’s (CMA) 107th National Western Mining Conference in February. The conference, held in Denver, attracted more than 500 attendees and 39 exhibitors. The theme was Colorado Mines the World.

Unfortunately, the term "control" has a negative connotation in the minds of many of our operating plant personnel. Whereas the opposite is true of those associated with research and technical centers in our industry. The magnitude of this difference in opinion and actual experience has often proved to be a major factor influencing the success or failure of process control applications. Through the years, many plant people have endured a number of unsuccessful attempts by "outside" people to "optimize" their plants; and these experiences have proved to have had quite a callousing effect on them. On the other hand, in many plants, successful process control efforts have made firm allies of the operating personnel, and have increased the number of metallurgical people who are well qualified and experienced in process control. The instrumentation industry, computer industry, and the mining industry's ability to quantify what is really happening in our processes have grown and developed rapidly since the first control efforts were made in the 1930's (1). Because of this-,: new control opportunities are becoming increasingly more feasible and older well established ones are becoming even more practical and necessary with regard to the economic s of our industry.

To overcome the difficulty of accurately judging the load state of a wet ball mill during the grinding process, a method of mill load identification based on the singular value entropy of the modified ensemble empirical mode decomposition (MEEMD) and a probabilistic neural network (PNN) classifier is proposed. First, the MEEMD algorithm is used to decompose the vibration signals recorded under different load states to obtain the intrinsic mode components, and a correlation coefficient threshold is used to select the sensitive mode components that characterize the state of the original signal. Second, singular value decomposition is used to obtain the singular value entropy. Finally, the load state of the wet ball mill is judged based on the magnitude of the singular value entropy. A characteristic mill load vector is constructed from the singular value entropies of the cylinder vibration signals recorded under different load conditions and is used as the input to a PNN, which then outputs the predicted ball mill load state; in this way, a load state identification model is established. Grinding experiments are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, showing that the method can accurately identify the load state of a wet ball mill. ()

The Republic of Singapore’s Public Utilities Board is implementing the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System Project. The project’s deep tunnel component, 48 km of deep, large diameter sewer tunnels has been successfully completed (the works are in the defects liability period). Six International Design/Build tunnel contracts utilized eight Earth Pressure Balance TBMs ranging up to 7.23 m in diameter to deal with varied ground types ranging from deep soft clays to fresh granite. Numerous access/workshafts were constructed and using various support systems. This paper provides an assessment/overview of the tunnel contracts, tunnel excavation methods and equipment, and the shaft systems. Suggested enhancements to similar future projects are provided.

There was a time when heavy-duty apron feeders were built to last almost forever. The machines were heavy and built to maintain certain expected longevity and reliability. Increasing emphasis on return on capital leads to cost-effective designs. Costs can be increased or decreased, depending on customer specifications and the design philosophy of the feeder manufacturer. Specifiers can make important contributions to cost effectiveness. To do so, this article describes what should be known about planning with a supplier for heavy-duty apron feeders. There are several factors that should be considered, including capacity, characteristics of material carried, length, method of feeder loading, degree of lift, hopper opening, pan construction, and type of drive. Today's apron feeders are built in various sizes and with a variety of components to handle heavy, lumpy, or abrasive materials that can ruin lighter feeders. Careful feeder selection is important if it is to provide a controlled feed rate, absorb huge impacts, be used with long hopper openings, and have a relatively low power-perton capacity. Variations in systems and materials demand that each feeder be designed for its application, drawing on a wide range of components. Therefore, certain factors must be considered before final specifications are drawn. Capacity The design and application of an apron feeder is based on how material passes through a given system over the feeder into processing machinery. The processing machinery's capacity governs other equipment and productivity of the flow. From this basic information, related sizes of upstream equipment can be determined. Of these, the apron feeder acts as the "mouth and neck of the bottle." No more will pass than the mouth and neck will accommodate. Everything in the apron feeder design, from dimensions to power, is based on processing machinery. Material Considerations Are Vital Just as the nature of materials to be crushed or screened affects capacity and productivity of a crusher or a grinding mill, so does it affect capacity and performance of a feeder. Lump size must be identified closely so the pan width can be selected to accommodate the maximum lump with room to spare. The paper presents the results of a study which involved collection and analysis of airborne pollutant concentration data in two producing underground room and pillar metal mines which use diesel powered equipment in the area near the face. The results include the concentrations of CO2, CO, NO, NO2 and respirable particulate matter measured with the latest portable instruments, and the carbon and hydrogen contents of the particulate matter samples determined by combusting them in a Elemental Analyzer. The carbon and hydrogen contents are used to estimate the amount of diesel particulate matter in the mine ambient air. The short term grab sample concentration data, although not suitable for determining compliance with ACGIH Threshold Limit Values (TLVs), are related to the TLVs so that they may be compared conveniently. Lognormal frequency distributions and the arithmetic mean of the concentration measurement data are used to compare different mine situations. Conclusions are drawn as to which pollutants are most important to control under actual mine production conditions.

Barrick's Goldstrike AA heap leach pad is an HDPE-lined facility that was used for gold recovery from low-grade ores using conventional cyanide heap-leach technology. The pad was operated from 1987 through 1999. Goldstrike prepared a unique reclamation plan for the AA leach pad facility to provide for a cost-effective, environmentally sound facility closure and to fulfill the State of Nevada's closure requirements. The traditional Nevada leach pad closure procedure involves rinsing to reduce the cyanide concentration to an acceptable level followed by reclamation. However, rinsing does not typically reduce certain metals and compounds, and some constituents may increase in concentration with rinsing. A closure scenario to effect limited infiltration through installation of a capillary cover for the leach pad was developed. The capillary cover was constructed by placing a fine-grained layer above the coarse-grained spent leach material to create a capillary break. In an arid climate such as in Nevada, the fine-grained layer will rarely reach saturation, and the cover will be able to store water during precipitation events and will allow removal of water through evaporation and transpiration (ET) during the growing season. A 1.22-m (4 ft) cover thickness was selected as the optimum design cover thickness. The drainage network on the surface of the recontoured AA heap leach pad was specifically designed to enhance the re vegetation, reclamation and sediment yield control aspects of the AA heap leach pad closure, while resulting in a natural looking surface that is compatible with the surrounding topography. Adjacent natural topographic features were used to establish target design parameters for recontouring and erosion-control design.

The mineral deposits found in carbonate facies rocks of sedimentary basins include deposits comprised of the country rock itself such as limestone for chemical uses, dolomite for road aggregate, and a variety of other industrial uses of the sedimentary rock. Exploration for new reserves is generally conducted on basis of outcrop investigation, subsurface drilling, and facies change studies while geophysics and geochemistry are not applied. In contrast, rapid development has taken place in the application of both geophysical and geochemical techniques in exploration for stratiform deposits of zinc, lead, barite, and fluorite deposits. This paper will present case histories and show illustrations from such work in the Mid-Continent region. The Metals Division of International Oil & Gas, Inc. has gathered this experience through work over the last three years along the southern margin of the Eastern Interior platform focusing on the states of Arkansas and Tennessee. The exploration work was conducted partially for the Company's own account, partially in joint exploration ventures with mining companies including International Mogul Mines, Ltd., a Canadian company; Bear Creek Mining Company, a subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation; the Mining Division of W. R. Grace and Company, and Boliden-Preussag Exploration, a Swedish-German partnership. A discussion of frequently asked questions may help individuals trying to interpret subsidence regulations or prepare permit applications. The subsidence permitting process involves just one part of the mass of Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act regulations. But of the 18 main SMCRA sections, subsidence is critical to the permitting process for coal operators. It's an area in which applicants have had problems interpreting regulations and preparing permit applications. Of 22 western states, only Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, and Utah heave thus far received approval for their mining and reclamation plans. The other states are now involved in the permit application process and will be dealing with SMCRA regulations for the next year or so. Some state programs, when approved, may differ substantially from the federal SMCRA program. But, to be approved, the state programs must be deemed equal to or more stringent than the federal regulations. SMCRA regulations apply to any coal operation "that exhibits surface effects." Thus they apply to surface strip mines as well as underground coal operations. The regulations do not apply to hardrock mining operations. Since August 3, 1977, the government, industry, and the public have wrestled with SMCRA. They have struggled through an initial program with the US Geological Survey; a new agency, the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM); an interim program; and a "final" permanent regulatory program. Even now, OSM is reluctant to publish formal program guidelines because: •The regulations are still in the process of judicial review. • Some approvable state programs will supersede the federal regula¬tions. • The flexible regulations are open to interpretation, which is desir¬able to maintain. •Guidelines could be misleading until regulations and interpretations are revised and finalized.

Advances in the technology of abrasion resistant irons and steels, which could help in combating abrasion and wear in mining operations, are reviewed. Nodular irons alloyed with nickel or copper and molybdenum, with acicular, bainitic or bainitic-martensicic microstructures are described. These alloy irons combine excellent castability and relatively easy machinabilitv with good resistance to wear. Recent progress in the development of high chromium molybdenum alloy irons is outlined, by which high temperature heat treatment of massive castings can be eliminated, alloy costs can be reduced and cracking problems avoided. Data is also given on the erosion-corrosion resistance of these irons. Trends in the development of improved cast steels are outlined. Factors influencing the toughness and abrasion resistance of manganese steels are considered. The 6% Mn 1% Mo manganese steels are shown to have a useful combination of toughness and abrasion resistance. Composite castings are seen as a means of com- bating abrasion in applications involving severe impact. A brief appraisal is given of recently developed martensitic wrought steels with improved weldability.

The Sotra Link Project is a major infrastructure project in Norway involving the design, construction, financing and maintenance of several underground and surface structures between Sotra island and the city of Bergen, among them 23 tunnel portals, 12.5 km of tunnels and a 900 m long suspension bridge. This paper describes the benefits in applying a Building Information Modelling (BIM) approach to tunnelling, from Early Design to the Detail Design Phase. The BIM application to the Sotra Link Project resulted in several improvements, such as efficient handling of clashes and inconsistencies, deeper understanding of effective design choices (reduction of errors), more efficient communication between designers, enhanced control of project quantities and costs. The advantages of the BIM approach during the ongoing Construction Phase are also explained.
