One of the challenges in the development of mineral processing simulators is the modelling of liberation characteristics of particles produced by comminution circuits. Understanding the mineral characteristics of these particles is one of the keys to predicting their behaviour in separation circuits. While more fundamental research seeks to model the non-random breakage of ores this work examines whether we can move forward now by using observed characteristics of ores to model the composition of particles generated in comminution processes. The current work examines a range of ores and identifies which of these exhibit the pattern of similarity of composition for particles in a given size class that has been produced as the result of a variety of breakage conditions. The impact of mineralogy and texture on the evolution of liberation characteristics for both valuable and gangue minerals is discussed.

Enclosed cabs have been used for many years to isolate workers on mobile equipment in the mining industry for health and safety reasons. These enclosed cabs create a microenvironment for workers where they can be either more protected or more vulnerable to contaminants. Over the past decade, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has performed substantial research efforts to improve the air quality inside enclosed cabs of both underground and surface mobile mining equipment. In these efforts, NIOSH has partnered with mining companies, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and manufacturers of filtrations and pressurizations systems in a synergistic effort to reduce respirable dust and improve the air quality inside these enclosed cabs. Various field studies over this time have shown an array of results ranging from very minor to very significant reductions (protection factor: 3 ? 89) in respirable dust levels inside these enclosed cabs. In addition to and concurrent to the field work, NIOSH also performed a comprehensive laboratory study to evaluate all the factors involved in cab filtration and pressurization systems and identified those factors that were most significant for an effective system. From this comprehensive research effort, the key components for an effective filtration and pressurization system have been identified in an effort to provide the best air quality, thus minimizing the respirable dust exposure, to equipment operators inside of enclosed cabs of mobile mining equipment.

A photochromic material is one which undergoes a change of color when exposed to light and reverts to its original color when the light is removed. Review articles carrying extensive bibliographies have been written by Brown and Shaw (1) and by Schwab and Bertelson (2). Organics. Schwab and Bertelson divide the reactions in different organic photochromic materials into some half-dozen categories; Windsor (3) reduces these to the following three main classes of general interest, based on how they work. 1. Stereoisomers. Absorption of light breaks one of the chemical bonds in a. ring molecule, thus allowing the molecule to unwind and form a different geometrical arrangement. The reverse process is a reforming of the bond. Examples of this class are the spiropyrans and the anils. 2. Dyes. A triphenyl methane dye, for example, is oxidized by energetic light; the absorption characteristics of the positive ion so formed are different from those of the original electrically neutral benzene rings. 3. Triplet States. In the class of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, ground-state molecules are excited first to a singlet state by irradiation, and then go, via the lowest triplet state, to an excited triplet state. Visible light is absorbed in the triplet-triplet transition.

During the past decade, a general awareness of the need for and subsequent development of increased safety in United States coal mines has taken place. Government and industry alike were stimulated into accelerating their actions through unacceptable accident statistics and costs (in terms of human misery dollar values). Those of us who work in the United States coal industry are aware of the development of governmental controls on nine safety. Both Federal and State regulations have placed increased responsibility upon mine owners and operators to insure a safe working environment and to provide training for miners. No other industrial group of workers has received such attention or, in our opinion, deserves it more.

There is little doubt that the stability of both highwalls and spoil piles is essential to efficient strip mining. Accurate determination of the appropriate geotechnical parameters will pay dividends during mining, but only if the mine operation closely follows the engineering plans which have incorporated These factors. Productivity is invariably higher in mines where failure of highwalls and spoil piles does not occur. This is the result of the reduced rehandle and better working conditions found in stable mines. Control of the waste piles and highwalls also leads to better coal recover since failures can result in the burial of uncovered coal, which is then lost to mining. Safety is an important consideration. The importance of providing a safe working place for employees and of protecting costly mining equipment is hard to overemphasize. For miners, working in areas where instability exists, the degree of hazard involved in their occupation is increased particularly where night operations are involved. It is true, too, that there have been many cases where loading equipment has been buried and severely damaged by failures.

Based on the mine safety and health administration (MSHA)reports, mining truck accidents are among the significant causes of fatalities in the mining industry. The major causes of haulage accidents can be divided into non-driving and driving factors, such as truck-related sudden failures and operator performance. Numerous parameters affect trucks' safe operation, but situational awareness plays a significant role. Due to the distinct structure of mining trucks, making them efficient for mining purposes, the operator has a very limited field of view (FOV), making them prone to accidents resulting in losing lives. The cabin's position blocks the truck's right and rear sides, creating several blind points around it. Aiming to test/train the operator's awareness of the surrounding, a proximity detection system is developed through a multiplayer virtual reality (VR) application to investigate the human factor in equipment collisions. The operators were examined and monitored when asked to conduct what exactly happened in the Marigold mine truck accident without being aware of the scenario. After receiving sound, vibration, and visual alarm warnings, their reaction and performance were analyzed. The platform is developed using the Unity game engine for HTC VIVE virtual reality goggles. An Omni-direction treadmill and a motion simulator platform are utilized for the player and dump truck operators. Fifteen students were monitored when driving the dump truck receiving/not receiving proximity detection alarms. None of them repeated the accident when receiving proximity alarms. Also, they found the visual alarm the most comfortable while driving the truck.

"INTRODUCTION Industries around the globe have been making significant advancements in recent years due to innovations in automation technology. With the implementation of modern automation technology, professionals in process automation or plant operations can expect significant and exciting change, and the mining and mineral processing industries are no exception. From 2000 to 2010, the International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM) reported that an increased output and increased value of most metals has resulted in a rise in global metal and mineral process industries from $214 billion to $644 billion. [1] Since most productivity increases in mining and mineral process industries have been achieved through the ability to process lower grade ores with improved efficiency and larger equipment, these industries have begun to adopt advanced automation and control technologies. Despite a growth slow-down, the mining and mineral processing industries are poised for continued and sustainable growth and development due to an increasing demand for energy minerals and emerging technologies requiring minerals and metals previously not demand. However, as these industries becomes more automated, new challenges are arising on the horizon. DEMOGRAPHIC TIME BOMB John Payne from BP is credited with first using the term Demographic Time Bomb to describe the upcoming crisis in the process industry in finding experienced operations personnel. From a survey of 912 mining professionals, Stratum International found that a mere 0.4% of senior level candidates were between the ages of 25 and 34 and a similar proportion aged over 75 years. This indicates that there is both a deficiency of young skilled workers and a skilled workforce that is retiring earlier than the previous generation. Combined with data published by the US Department of Labor stating that the median age of the mining workforce is approaching 50 years old, this implies that these skilled mining and mineral process professionals are an aging population with irreplaceable knowledge and experience that are expected to retire in the next 5-10 years. While it is projected that the labor pool will be sufficient to fill open positions, the real question is if this young workforce will have necessary skill sets and experiences."

A feeder is used to control the gravity flow of bulk solids from storage areas, like a bin or a stockpile. For this type of application, it is important to select a proper drive that can fulfill all of the demands put on it. High starting torque capacity, variable speed and the ability to handle frequent starts and stops are some of the demands that the drive must be able to meet. The following is a comparison of the most common type of drives used today for feeder applications. When a feeder is started, the breakaway torque may reach as high as200% of the running torque. The accelerating torque usually is set to protect the carrying element of the feeder, like the belt for the belt feeder and the carrying chain of the apron feeder (Fig. 1).

There are many different machine setup parameters and variables that affect the production of cone crushers in a mineral processing plant. One of these variables is the eccentric speed at which the cone gyrates. In June 2012, pilot tests were conducted on a 200 hp high speed cone crusher to determine the production and operating conditions over a wide spectrum of eccentric speed. Every plant will have variations in the ore characteristics and feed rates throughout the life of the mine, and at times throughout a single shift of operation, which result in non-optimal use of the crushing energy and inconsistent process control. For high speed cone crushers, the crusher will exhibit a different capacity, power required, and discharge size distribution as the speed ranges over the design limits of the machine. This study documents the measured variation in production and energy efficiency both when the crusher was ran at full capacity as well as when the feed to the crusher was not sufficient to run at full capacity. Overall, the results match theory and the capacity and power fluctuated by 25% and 17%, respectively, over the speed range when operated full while there was an overall trend of slightly coarser discharge size distribution as the speed decreased. The results with the fixed feed rate were more telling, as the crushers had 4-14% higher production when making a theoretical minus 12.5 mm product when operating at the optimal speed as compared to the worst speed in the ?typical? speed range for this application. Secondary analysis of the fixed tonnage testing also showed that the power draw was more consistent with lower magnitude spikes at the higher speeds (higher cavity level), as on average the standard deviation of the power draw increased from 7% to 18% and the peak power spikes from 20% to 48% over the speed range tested. The findings lay groundwork for more efficient plant design. Varying the speed of the crusher can be used to tune the crusher speed during commissioning, adapt to changing ore conditions over long periods of time, or be used as a dynamic input into an advanced control system. Each action above would serve to make the crusher(s) more productive and more energy efficient, and would also have mechanical benefits for the machine. Chlorite veins in the Silver Star district (40 km southeast of Butte) were of little interest to those who were mining gold and silver in the late 19th century. It wasn't until 1975 that unusually pure magnesian chlorite of the variety clinochlore was identified from a ?talc? claim in this district. In 1977 tests by Cyprus Industrial Minerals showed that this chlorite was suitable for use in ceramics. Mining begun in that year continues. These replacement veins of chlorite in Precambrian quartzofeldspathic gneiss differ from the metalliferous veins to the northwest in both attitude and mineralogy.

Underground construction often requires working within a very congested urban environment, including excavating shafts adjacent to highly sensitive and multistoried structures, sometimes even within such structures. Shafts adjacent to heavily loaded column footings are often required due to space constraints. Invariably, footing surcharges must be considered during the design of shaft rock reinforcement. Rockwedge stability evaluation reveals that column surcharges can greatly impact the ability to meet the desired factor of safety. Design methodologies and examples to deal with these special circumstances are presented.

Research was conducted to study the characteristics of longwall mining machine noises and to develop engineering controls for the reduction of noise exposure at longwall faces. Time-motion noise dosimeter data was analyzed and compared with existing databases. Experiments were conducted above ground on a stage loader/crusher to explore the potential of using active noise control (noise cancellation) in reducing the noise levels. A 5-7 dBA reduction in recorded stage loader noise was achieved. This paper presents the equipment, procedure and results of the noise surveys, as well as the active noise control experiments.

Next month, American Commercial Barge Line Company will begin moving coal from mines on the old Camp Breckinridge property in Western Kentucky to TVA's new 2600 MW steam plant at Cumberland City, Tennessee. By April of 1973, this movement will reach a level of 7,000,000 tons per year. TVA bought the coal rights to this property from the General Services Administration in 1965 for approximately $7 million. The reserve contains about 120 million tons of recoverable No.9 coal, and about the same recover-able amount of No. 11 coal. TVA then contracted through competitive bidding with Peabody Coal Company to mine the No.9 seam through two slope shafts. The mines are about 300 feet deep and are separated by the one major fault on this property. The mine portals are approximately 3-1/2 miles apart, with the northern portal being over nine miles distant from the Ohio River (see Figure No.1). In 1969 TV A took bids on alternate methods for transporting 120 million tons of coal to Cumberland City at seven million tons per year. These alter-natives included overland transportation to the Ohio River by rail or conveyor, water transportation from Union County, Kentucky to Cumberland City, and total transportation packages from Camp Breckinridge to Cumberland City. The latter could be a joint land/water package, or all land (rail). Ultimately American Commercial Barge Line was awarded an $88 million package transportation contract to convey the coal from Camp Breckinridge to Uniontown, Kentucky; to store it at Uniontown in a quantity sufficient to allow ratable delivery to the steam plant; and to barge from Uniontown to Cumberland City via the Ohio and Cumberland Rivers.

The Marlin gold-silver deposit is in western Guatemala, 15 kilometers south of a major transform fault that separates the North American and Caribbean plates. A district-scale, northwest-trending graben controlled deposition of a greater than 1200 meter thick upper Tertiary quartz latite to rhyolite volcaniclastic sequence. These volcanics were subsequently intruded and unconformably overlain by a small intermediate, latite to andesite, volcanic complex. Classic low-sulfidation, quartz-calcite-adularia veins and stockwork formed a 2.2 million ounce gold deposit, in association with late-stage andesite dike swarms, along a west-northwest striking normal fault on the eastern flank of the volcanic complex.

As global energy demands increase, there will be a critical need to employ fuels that have minimal environmental impacts. While hydrogen is considered the ultimate fuel for that purpose, hydrocarbon based fuels will be in use for a considerable time and will probably be the first major source of hydrogen for next generation power systems. The best fuel for this transition will be natural gas because of the high hydrogen to carbon ratio. Natural gas hydrates have the potential to meet the global energy needs for the foreseeable future. The amount of energy stored in natural gas hydrates is significantly more than that of all the other fossil fuels combined. However, most proposed techniques for recovering the natural gas from the hydrate require too much energy input, raise safety concerns or can only recover a fraction of the gas. This paper discusses the technical feasibility of a novel method of gas production in hydrate reservoirs. The method is an in-situ process that creates a point heat source in the hydrate formation. This method not only significantly reduces the energy input, but also has the potential to sequester as much or more CO2 than would be produced from combustion of the natural gas produced, thus making this in-situ methane production technique virtually carbon neutral. Simulations using FEMLAB™ show that the method offers an energy efficient and environmentally friendly way to produce natural gas from hydrate reservoirs. Preliminary results indicate that it is possible to have an energy efficiency of nearly 90% for land based reservoirs for hydrate loadings of 20%. The simulation results also suggest that alternatives to a point source can be employed which may improve the process efficiency.

"This presentation aims to serve as a primer on conservation, research and regulatory organizations interested in the environmental impact of deep-sea mining. It will also consider a recent, early-stage proposal for an experimental SMS mining operation aimed at increasing our understanding of mining impacts and ecosystem recovery.Over the past 5 years, as deep-sea mining has been moving closer to reality, it has attracted growing attention from deep-sea biologists, conservation groups and operators of deep-sea research vehicles and observing systems. Several new international research organizations have emerged that have a direct interest in deep-sea biodiversity conservation, and the environmental impact of ocean mining. These include INDEEP, which evolved from the 10-year Census of Marine Life program, the Deep Ocean Stewardship Initiative that has recently hosted several high profile international meetings, and the VentBase forum of academics, industry and regulators that aims to develop environmental best practices and informational documents for all stakeholders involved in Seafloor Massive Sulphide (SMS) mining. InterRidge, currently hosted by China, represents a decades old partnership of deep-sea biologists and economic geologists who discovered the more than 100 known hydrothermal vent fields and SMS deposits on midocean ridges and in other settings of seafloor volcanism. In 2012 InterRidge formed an industry liaison group to examine how the mid-ocean ridge researcher community could contribute to the development of environmentally responsible practices for the exploration and exploitation of SMS deposits. While initial meetings with industry were promising, InterRidge members are currently debating the relative merits of sharing exploration know-how and understanding of vent ecosystems with industry, against the need to maintain their independence as stewards of deep-sea ecosystems."

Recent accelerated exploration efforts in southwest China have progressively quantified the vast phosphate resources in the Yunnan Province. To date, according to Chinese geologists, potential reserves in the province may be on the order of 4 Gt, which would equal the entire US reserve base. Development of this vast reserve is underway at two sites located 60-70 km southwest of Kunming, the provincial capital of Yunnan. The first, the Kunyang open-pit phosphate mine, produces an estimated 1.5 Mt/a of 22-30% P20,5. The other project located north of Kunyang is the Haikou mine, which the Chinese consider a possible 2.0-Mt/a operation. Because average ore grades run 3% less than those of Kunyang, beneficiation will be necessary. While the latter project has been initiated on a small scale, it is basically still on the drawing board. Brown and Root and the US Bureau of Mines are assisting on the project. Both operations are under the direction a regional administration which reports to the Ministry of Chemical Industries in Beijing. Combined production from both mines could represent some 70% of China's future productive capacity. Ore reserves in the region are estimated at 400 Mt by local officials. Geology of the District The phosphates are considered Cambrian in age and rest on a Precambrian dolomite. The Indian Ocean, Chinese geologists say, may have been the original source. The line of deposition stretches on a trend from Vietnam in the southwest, through Yunnan, into Sichuan Province to the northeast. Because the area is considered very stable from a geologic viewpoint, large quantities of phosphate have been deposited and large outcrops are known to occur everywhere in the province, according to Chinese sources. The Kunyang and Haikou ore bodies are thought to be two wings of an anticline with the former the southern portion, and the latter the northern portion. Each ore body strikes on an east-west axis. While there are many localized phosphate operations throughout the province, the Kunyang mine is the premium producer. Kunyang's Mining Development The Kunyang open-pit mine was opened in 1966. During the early years, operations were considered somewhat disorganized. Systematic mine planning and normal operations were not initiated until just two years ago, according to mine management. In 1979, Kunyang finally reached its design capacity of 1.5 Mt/a. The ore body consists of two phosphate beds separated by a band of shale. The top layer of phosphate varies from 4 to 8 m, averaging 6 m. The middle shale layer is 2 in. The third layer, which is not as rich as the top, is approximately 4 m. The Round Mountain gold mine, located 90 km (55 miles) north of Tonopah, Nevada began large-scale production in 1977. During 2008 Round Mountain Gold Corporation (RMGC) relocated the primary crusher facility approximately 300 meters (1,000 feet) to make room for the next phase of open pit mining activities. This facility was installed in 1988 and used a log-crib retaining wall and dump pocket RMGC selected Hilfiker Retaining Walls and Collins Engineers, Inc. to provide design and materials for a new 17 meter (56 feet) high Mechanically Stabilized Embankment (MSE) wall to support the haul trucks at the new location. The construction contractor was EarthTech West Ltd. of Norwood, Colorado. An MSE wall with a cast-in-place concrete face was chosen as a durable, yet less expensive alternative to the reinforced concrete dump pocket that was originally designed for the project. The arrangement of the MSE wall is of an unusual configuration to meet a variety of operational and maintenance requirements. This paper outlines the selection process, design, and construction of the MSE wall.

Improved metals and other commodity prices have caused the mining industry to open new mines, re-evaluate development opportunities at potential mines and increase production at existing ones. This sense of renewed optimism is being seen at operations and development projects around the world. Except in the United States. The regulatory structure there has not allowed the domestic industry to share much in mining’s resurgence. It can still take up to 10 years to permit a new mine. And, while Clinton-era regulations regarding mill sites have been put on hold, existing mines that wish to expand operations still face significant regulatory and environmental hurdles. But things may begin to improve in the United States.
