Introduction Rockfalls occur when rocks or boulders detach from mountains or hills and tumble down. They can pose significant hazards to infrastructure such as highways, buildings, and mine open pits, and they sometimes result in personal injury or death. Prediction of rockfalls is a difficult task. Slopes that are at risk of rockfall have highly variable geometries. The location, mass, and shape of the rocks that might dislodge and fall are uncertain. Moreover, the materials that make up a slope can vary considerably from one section to another. Furthermore, the relevant material properties are usually not well known. Performing probabilistic simulations of rockfalls, combined with proper statistical analyses, has proven to be an effective and acceptable method for dealing with these difficulties [1, 2, 3]. The movements of a falling rock can be classified as freefall, bouncing, sliding, toppling, or rolling. The falling trajectory is controlled mainly by the geometry of the slope, the block shape, and the energy dissipated at each contact of the block with the slope. A rockfall model is evaluated based on its ability to efficiently predict the velocity, frequency, height of bounce, and run-out distance of falling rocks. With this information, the engineer can design remedial measures such as restraining nets and ditches. Most of the existing rockfall simulators are based on particle models that consider the falling rock as an infinitesimal particle with a mass, called the lumped mass or stereomechanical models [1, 2, 3, 4]. Other models involve hybrid methods relying on simplified assumptions. The most common hybrid methods are based on contact searching for the movement of a dimensionless object and incorporate some aspects of rigid body impact for bouncing [5, 6, 7]. There are also some rigid body models in the literature that employ simplified versions of rigid body models [8, 9]. This study applies a more sophisticated rigid body theory based on rigid body impact mechanics (RBIM), which was developed by Stronge [10, 11, 12]. The new theory captures all modes of rigid body movement. Due to the importance of the rock geometry, single impacts of ellipsoidal and prismatic rocks with rectangular cross sections are investigated. The effect of rock slenderness on rebound velocities and energies is also investigated for ellipsoidal rocks. The correspondence between the model parameters and the data from the rockfall literature data will be discussed.

In 1987, the Rock Springs, WY district office of the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) began to develop an automated system to store, maintain and manipulate more than 14,000 drill hole logs contained in the district's office files for various solid leasable minerals. The development of this system was based predominantly on a trial-and-error basis, with many procedural changes incorporated over time. The current Automated Drill Hole Database and Analysis System will continue to evolve with new software developments and increased personal expertise in this field. The mission of the BLM's Branch of Solid Minerals is mandated by a series of federal laws. The most important are The Mineral Leasing Act, the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, the Federal Coal Lease Amendments Act and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. Several regulations, promulgated from these laws, dictate that BLM must perform certain tasks and functions as part of its specific duties. The regulations that apply to the BLM Solid Minerals program are codified at 43 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 3400 for coal, and at 43 CFR 3500 for non-energy solid leasable minerals, such as sodium, phosphate and potash. Specific functions required of the Branch of Solid Minerals necessitates the use of geologic and drill hole data analyses. These functions can be divided into pre-lease and post-lease. Resolution Copper Mining LLC (RCML) is currently in a Pre-feasibility study evaluating a large and deep copper and molybdenum deposit in the historic mining district east of Superior, Arizona. Work scheduled for the next several years includes dewatering the existing shut-down mine (the Magma Mine) and sinking an exploratory shaft to 2,130 meters (7,000 feet) below the surface. To dewater the Magma Mine and sink the exploratory shaft, RCML must extract and manage about 2 billion gallons of accumulated mine water inventory, as well as about 300 million gallons per year of new inflow. In order to conserve a valuable water resource in a desert environment, RCML worked with the New Magma Irrigation and Drainage District (NMIDD) to provide treated mine water to blend with and supplement the NMIDD?s water supply to approximately 2,000 hectares (5,000 acres) of farmland located east of Phoenix. A 44 km (27-mile) pipeline was needed to convey the treated water. It was essential that a treatment system be used which could reliably meet irrigation water quality goals, produce a non-scaling effluent to maintain pipeline flow capacity, and generate a dense sludge minimizing disposal cost and volume. This paper describes the resulting mine water treatment and recovery system (MWTS) and how the system has performed against objectives.

Effects of the August 1995 failure of the Omai tailings dam in Guyana continue to be felt throughout the mining industry. This article is taken from the final report of the independent body of experts commissioned by the government of Guyana to establish the cause of the failure. It explains what happened, why and how to avoid it in the future. Despite environmental, health and safety effects that were negligible by any objective measure, the failure has received wide international attention. Coming on the heels of the shift in exploration targets and development opportunities to developing countries, it has intensified interest in tailings dam safety and environmental management issues. An informed understanding of the nature of the failure and its effects is key to responding to these concerns.

"The city of Minneapolis contracted with CDM Smith to update and provide a conceptual design for improvements to mitigate surcharge flooding in the Central City Storm Water Tunnel System (CCSTS). As a part of the project, CDM Smith conducted a field survey and condition assessment of the existing tunnel system. Information from the survey was then used to update the existing XPSWMM model and develop system wide alternatives.The CCSTS provides storm-water runoff drainage for nearly the entire area of the city’s downtown commercial district. The system consists of deep storm-water tunnels constructed in the St. Peter Sandstone, approximately 21 m (70 ft) below the street’s surface. The primary tunnels comprising the Central City storm water tunnel system are located below Hennepin Avenue, Nicollet Mall, Lesalle Avenue, Marquette Avenue South, 2nd Avenue South, South 5th Street, Washington Avenue South, Portland Avenue South, 2nd Street South, and Chicago Avenue South, as shown in Fig. 1. This network of tunnels conveys the runoff from a 305-acre tributary area that is generally bound by Hennepin Avenue and 1st Avenue North to the east, 12th Street to the south, 4th Avenue South and 7th Avenue South to the west, and 2nd Street South. These tunnels were constructed between 1936 and 1940, except for the Marquette Avenue South tunnel, which was constructed between 1963 and 1964.The CCSTS operates as a gravity flow system. These tunnels were constructed within the St. Peter Sandstone layer of bedrock and emerge from the bedrock at the Mississippi River below St. Anthony Falls. The Central City and the adjacent Chicago Avenue tunnel system converge into a single outfall at the Mississippi River. The runoff discharges from the converged outfall to a side channel of the Mississippi River, called a tailrace, located near the Guthrie Theater. The Minneapolis Division of Surface Water and Sewers provided 32 historic plats detailing the plan and profile of the tunnel system.The tunnel plans show nine different cross-section configurations. Eight configurations within the overall system generally show the same geometric “cathedral” shape with the inside dimensions varying from 1.2 to 1.8 m (4 to 6 ft) in width and 1.8 to 2.4 m (6 to 8 ft) in height. For analysis, these eight configurations were reduced to three configurations with regards to tunnel liner, cross-sectional area and support. For simplicity, the three configurations are described according to the three types of tunnel support used during construction: none required, light timber and heavy timber"

Swelling ground is one of the most feared problem in tunneling. Although usually not causing sudden failures during construction, the very large and long- lasting deformations give contractors and designers the impression of facing an inevitable phenomenon against which there is no technical defense. Examples are concrete liners of up to 1 m that have been cracked or crushed, tunnel inverts that are heaving at a rate of 0.1 m per week during construction and continue to heave during decades. This author (Einstein (1979). Einstein et al. (1972) (1975)) and others (Huller (19761, Grob (1972) (1976). Golta (1967), tienke (19761, Krause (1976). Lee et al. (1976)) have described many cases of swelling tunnels that illustrate the significance and magnitude of the problem. This paper intends to show that tunnels in swelling rock can be built to perform satisfactorily. . For this purpose the tunnel builder needs to know how to determine the existence and specific behavior of swelling ground, how to select appropriate structural characteristics of the tunnel and predict its performance under the specific ground conditions, and finally how to construct the tunnel such that the anticipated performance will be achieved. This concept of a design-construction procedure is the same as that for tunneling in general; it is mentioned here for NO reasons: 1. To point out that design and construction cannot and should not be separated. The way in which the tunnel will be built has to be an integral part of the design. 2. This paper will be structured corresponding to the procedural concept.

The use of paste tailings as underground backfill and for surface disposal is rapidly expanding, and with it comes the requirement to understand and predict its long-term environmental stability. This paper presents the results from a kinetic testing study performed on cemented tailings paste mixtures under both subaqueous and subaerial conditions. In addition, the effects of grainsize reduction are investigated. It will be demonstrated that the long-term weathering behavior of tailings paste is controlled by its physical and chemical characteristics, as well as its placement conditions. The testing indicates that subaqueous disposal of paste inhibits acid generation, whereas the exposed samples produced acidic leachate despite the presence of cement added to meet geotechnical requirements.

Scope of Section The physical characterization of an ore or mineral mixture in such detail that mineral processing may be effectively applied to create more useful products is one part of the technology of sampling and testing. In addition, the evaluation of the multitude of separation processes, both physical and chemical, combined with ancillary opera¬tions and performed on samples at a laboratory scale, is another part of the testing procedure. Although analytical techniques provid¬ing quantitative determinations of elemental compositions are an im¬portant and necessary supplement to any testing program, that field of endeavor is a well-developed, separate entity beyond the scope of this Section. Sampling procedures cover the practice of selecting representative quantities of test materials in the field to evaluate mineral deposits, and extend to techniques of obtaining process samples in slurry and bulk ore as part of process evaluation. The same techniques are appli¬cable, of course, to standardized methods of metallurgical accounting. Sampling is also an important facet of successful on-line measurement of slurry properties such as assays and particle size in the practice of automation. However, the sampling methods in this case can be different from those needed for precise testing and accounting pur¬poses. Sampling was well defined in Taggart's Handbook as "the opera¬tion of removing a part convenient in size for testing, from a whole which is of much greater bulk, in such a way that the proportion and distribution of the quality to be tested (e.g., specific gravity, metal content, recoverability) are the same in both the whole and the part removed (SAMPLE). The conditions of the more stringent definition, that the sample shall be completely representative of the whole as regards all aspects save bulk, are practically never fulfilled when heterogenous mineral mixtures are sampled." Taggart's Handbook of Mineral Dressing, Section 19, "Sampling and Testing," continues to be a very useful compendium of principles and techniques, particularly as applied to manual methods for han¬dling samples. In the intervening years since its last revision, substan¬tial progress has been made in both the theory and the techniques; thus, this current contribution is designed to be an extension of the earlier work, yet complete enough to provide procedural guidelines to methods of continuing validity. Although basic principles of testing remain unchanged, the meth¬ods of applying those principles have undergone great change. New testing equipment has become available, yielding a greater precision of results. Testing methods have been refined which, in many cases, allows for a valid scale up of flowsheet designs without the necessity of costly pilot or prototype plant development. Justification for a Sampling and Testing Program* The proper evaluation of a mineral property is a complicated process. It often is done on a team basis with the exploration geologist, mining engineer, mineral process engineer (extractive metallurgist), economist, and product utilizer (ceramist, chemical engineer, chemist, metallurgist, etc.) all represented. The mineral processing engineer is a key member because he can provide a go no-go answer to the question, "Can this ore be processed economically?" In addition, his judgment on the response of even the initial sample to processing can be an invaluable guide to the proposed process and its mutations. Since the capital investment and operating costs are so sensitive to the type of process used, the judgment of the mineral processing engineer forms an important part of the early evaluation of the profitability of a new mining venture. This early estimation of the processing approach is all the more important since, for some metalliferous ores, the capital investment for mill, smelter, water supply, and tailings disposal exceeds the cost of the mine. At present, for commodities such as coal, the reverse is true. There is a smaller capital investment for the coal preparation plant than for the mine. In general, both the capital and operating costs escalate very rapidly in the following order: gravity concentration of alluvial deposits (e.g., dredging), gravity concentration of lode ores, flotation, simple hydrometallurgical processes, and complicated hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes. The latter two processes may cost 100 to 1,000 times more per ton treated than processing of a simple alluvial deposit. This dictates that the valuable mineral be concentrated as much as possible to minimize the total tonnage treated in the more expensive operations. Within each of these ore-processing categories there is a wide range of process sophistication and hence of capital and operating costs. Perhaps the greatest variations are in the chemical processing of ores. These range from the simple leaching of a copper waste dump to very sophisticated hydrometallurgical processing of ores in increasing order of cost. Because the overall cost of a mining venture is so sensitive to the process selected, it is essential that the mineral¬ processing engineer evaluate the ore in the initial stages of the development of an ore body. As better samples become available, he must continually revise his estimate of the process to be employed. The sampling and testing process must be a necessary and continuing activity throughout the life of a project. One fundamental aspect of nearly all mineral deposits is the inherent variability of the mineral assemblage and composition. A utopian goal of any processing plant is to have the process so flexible and so well-defined that an automatic process control system can optimize the economic recovery at all times. Since this is rarely possible, a continuing or at least a periodic testing program is desirable. Variables to be considered are: 1) Ore body inconsistencies. 2) Zonal variations. 3) Feed variations from mining plan or methods. 4) Variable performance of processing units due to wear. 5) Seasonal or other changes affecting processing conditions such as water quality, temperature, etc. 6) Changing market conditions for product quality or byproducts. 7) Technological advances in processing methods or equipment. 8) Increasing demands for environmental control. 9) Changing economics of competitive processes, of supplies, of capital investment vs. labor costs, etc. Sampling Procedures Preliminary Guidelines for Sampling Ore Deposit Studies. t At a very early stage, it is essential that the mineral processing engineer receive a sample of the ore. This may be a portion of the diamond drill core or a split from the trench, pit, churn drill, channel, or sheet sample. Even a grab sample may have some value, but it should be selected by the mining engineer or exploration geologist to be as representative of the ore body as possible within his best judgment. The sample delivered to the process engineer should have been subjected to as little prior crushing as is practical since fine sizes are difficult to concentrate. In addition, finely ground ores are readily oxidized and thus may give misleading test results. Furthermore, ground samples may make it impossible to eval¬uate either the comminution or the coarse-gravity concentration pro¬cesses. For an initial evaluation, a good deal may often be learned from a sample of only a few pounds if that is all that is available. To obtain the maximum information from a sample, its selection should be carefully discussed with the mineral processing engineer. In addi¬tion to being as representative as possible, the mineralogically distinct samples should be carefully segregated rather than composited. Since drastically different processes are often needed to process samples of differing mineralogy, considerable care and time must be exercised during this sample collection step. The segregation of samples showing gross mineralogical differences, such as the oxide caping on a sulfide deposit or a laterized zone, is easy. It is the more subtle changes in mineralogy that can often elude the field man. Yet these differences are often sufficient to dictate that an entirely different type of process be used. Obviously, the selection of these initial samples for ore testing and mineralogical studies requires that it be done by a man of consider¬able experience and judgment. While the mining engineer or field geologist is collecting these samples, he should also note and convey to the processing engineer such details as water quality and availabil¬ity, terrain, potential mill location, tailings-disposal areas, case of transportation, etc. As the property is developed with additional drill holes, adits, etc., larger and more representative samples will be required to develop the ore-processing flowsheet more adequately. If pilot-plant studies are required, a very large sample may be necessary. Though the type and amount of sample collected for flowsheet development investigations vary widely, gathering a representative sample of the ore body is a prime requisite for any process development effort. The establishment and survival of different grass species and cultivars on various phytotechnic treatments at a limestone quarry was studied. The treatments applied were: a) bare soil, b) bentonite, c) bentonite-straw and d) asphalt-straw. According to the results, significant differences were found among species and cultivars, growing on different treatments as far as plant growth and survival are concerned. The seed germination was higher on bentonite -straw and asphaltic-straw than on bentonite but the plants survival were higher on bentonite. Lolium perenne had higher seed germination rate and better establishment than the other tested species at all treatments. However, the survival rate of Agropyron desertorum and of the cultivars palestina and chrysopigi of Dactylis glomerata was higher than of the other species.

To meet increasing demand of coal, underground mining is largely being replaced by the exploitation at deeper horizons and with greater complexities. The exploitation-proposition may be below not-to-be-disturbed surface properties or below water-bodies, posing a constant threat of inundation. Also, the mounting pressures to limit the adverse impacts on the environment bring the extraction-undertaking to face more challenges. An understanding of subsidence-mechanism and a rational quantification of subsidence parameters is a requisite herein. This paper presents such pragmatic quantification, validated at mine-sites in India. In comparison, better productivity, conservation and safety is ensured in this approach.

This paper deals with the development of environment performance indicators (EPIs) for the steel industry. Environmental performance has become one of the key measures of business success. Emergence of continuing pressure from customers, employees, government and NGOs for environmental performance evaluation (EPE) of industries has led to evolve a framework for the development of sector specific environmental performance indicators. EPIs can be used by steel industry for assessing the continual improvement in environmental perfromance, selecting various eco-friendly options, benchmarking, environmental reporting, technology assessment and dissemination, evaluating environmental impacts and building EPIs based environmental management systems. The objective of this paper is to develop EPIs for steel industry and provide framework for development of environmental performance indicators based environmental management system and its integration with the overall management system. An indepth discussion has been presented concerning identification of EPIs, eavaluation of significance of EPIs, their prioritization and its integration with Environmental Management Systems. A new methodology has been proposed for implementing EPIs based environmental management systems . The material presented is derived in part from PhD studies of Rajesh Kumar Singh.

The schlieren technique describes an optical analysis method designed to enhance light distortions caused by air movement. The ability to visualize air flow has significant implications for analyzing underground mine ventilation systems, including the enhancement of surveys and models. Currently, traditional schlieren methods are impractical underground. Background-oriented schlieren (BOS) provides a solution to this problem. BOS requires two primary components, a professional quality digital camera and a schlieren background. A schlieren background is composed of a varying contrast repetitive pattern, such as black and white stripes. This background allows the camera’s sensor to capture minor light diffractions, such as those caused by air flow. Although BOS shows great potential for ventilation analysis, sensitivity is an issue. This paper seeks to validate the BOS technique for imaging flow through a regulator by comparing BOS images with traditional schlieren images. This paper also outlines initial experimental efforts used for the validation.

Since its introduction in 2002, the modern air jig has processed a wide array of coals throughout the world. This paper explores the reasons and justifications for the installations and provides case history performance data. Specifically highlighted are air jig plants processing metallurgical coal in Colombia, bituminous coal in the United States and India and lignite in the United States and Spain. Each installation has unique reasons to justify an air jig facility. It is important to note that not all of the justifications were based on the ?most cost effective yield?, normally a mantra for coal preparation plant designers and owners. Dry jigging of coal has long been a proven technique for upgrading coal, the modern air jig, with its improved efficiency and operating systems simply extended the range of applications. In some cases, it even allows market quality coal to be produced when no other option is possible.

SYNOPSIS A Wirth tunnel borer owned by Anglo American Corporation completed a 1150m long tunnel some years ago and was subsequently extensively modified by Technical Development Services. In 1982 this borer provided new and particularly interesting information In the field of hard rock boring. The abrasive quartzltes traversed proved to be a challenge to the cutter manufacturer and the project team. This paper examines the problems faced, the solutions found and the lessons learnt.

Until it was defunded in 1995, the U.S. Bureau of Mines maintained a Cost Estimating System (CES) for prefeasibility-type economic evaluations of mineral deposits and estimating costs at producing and non-producing mines. This system had a significant role in mineral resource assessments to estimate costs of developing and operating known mineral deposits and predicted undiscovered deposits. For legal reasons, the U.S. Geological Survey cannot update and maintain CES. Instead, statistical tools are under development to estimate mining costs from basic properties of mineral deposits such as tonnage, grade, mineralogy, depth, strip ratio, distance from infrastructure, rock strength, and work index. The first step was to re-estimate ?Taylor?s Rule? which relates operating rate to available ore tonnage. The second step was to estimate statistical models of capital and operating costs for open pit porphyry copper mines with flotation concentrators. For a sample of 27 proposed porphyry copper projects, capital costs can be estimated from three variables: mineral processing rate, strip ratio, and distance from nearest railroad before mine construction began. Of all the variables tested, operating costs were found to be significantly correlated only with strip ratio.

Health and safety issues are a very important aspect of mining activities. Although the application of scientific research and current technology shields workers from many dangerous aspects of mining, accidents do happen. Many companies and institutions worldwide have committed to a continuous effort to minimize such occurrences. In this study, the health and safety data pertaining to the Greek mining and quarrying industry for the last 3 decades are presented and critically evaluated with respect to number of workers, annual production, etc. Appropriate indices are also calculated regarding the incidence and frequency of accidents. Health and safety issues specific to mining in Greek are also discussed.

Many of the trace elements found in coal are associated with mineral matter, making it possible to remove them by physical coal cleaning. As part of work funded by the Electric Power Research Institute, both conventional and advanced coal cleaning processes were found to provide large reductions in the concentration of many trace elements that, if released into the atmosphere, are considered to be potentially toxic or environmentally harmful. Advanced physical cleaning technologies appear to provide greater reductions than conventional technologies. Chemical cleaning processes may also remove many trace elements, possibly including organically-bound elements such as beryllium. Care must be taken in the disposal of coal cleaning plant refuse because oxidation and leaching of this material can create highly acidic leachate and many trace elements are mobile in an acid environment. Laboratory leaching procedures are potentially useful in determining the degree of risk of water contamination by trace elements should an acid environment form.

Vibratory or oscillatory conveyors can be found in all types of industry, handling virtually any granular bulk material, often at elevated temperatures. These conveyors can be combined with other process functions, such as screening, cooling, drying and dewatering, while conveying. Although construction and installation is relatively simple, the engineering and design analysis of the vibratory mechanics is fairly complex. This paper will discuss the basic types of vibratory conveyors and the analysis of the material movement along the carrying trough.

The Iron Ore Company of Canada mines, processes and ships crude iron ore, concentrate and pellets from the rich ore bodies of the Labrador Trough area in the extreme north-eastern part of Canada, some five hundred miles from Montreal (see figure 1). There are three main sites of activity. At Schefferville, approximately 12 million tons a year of crude ore (chiefly limonite) are mined, crushed, screened and shipped to Sept-Iles. At Labrador City, 40 million tons of specular hematite are mined annually for processing into 17 million tons of concentrate. Of this, 9 million tons are converted into pellets. All product 1s shipped to Sept-Iles. At Sept-Iles, on the north coast of the St. Lawrence, a six million ton per year concentrator and pellet plant process much of the Scheffervllle ore into high-grade pellets. Also at Sept-Iles are the company's administration offices stockpiles and shipping facilities. The Terminal facilities can berth and load a 250,000 ton bulk carrier at 19,000 tons per hour.
