Ring gear and pinions used as the final drive on large metallurgical grinding mills are expected to transmit their rated horsepower reliably for long periods of time. Duty is 24 hrs./ day. Life expectancy of such gear sets is of the order of 20 years; that is, each gear and pinion flank is expected to resist failure by pitting for 10 years. This means that for a dual pinion gear set having a ratio of 18.42:1.0 and a mill speed of 10 RPM, every gear tooth will see 105.12 x 106 surface contact stress cycles and every pinion tooth will see 968.15 x 106 surface contact stress cycles in a 10 year period. The allowable surface contact stress on the gear and pinion is determined by the material hardnesses. The rule being the higher the hardness, the higher the allowable surface contact stress may be.

Calcium oxide, with its ability to capture and store carbon dioxide, is emerging to become an important tool in carbon management. Calcium oxide can be used reversibly to capture carbon dioxide in situ and then be regenerated to produce a pure stream of carbon dioxide ready for sequestration; the Zero Emission Coal Alliance technology utilizes this property of calcium oxide to generate emissions-free electric power from coal. The reaction of calcium oxide with carbon dioxide resulting in thermodynamically stable carbonate is well understood; however, the efficiency of this reaction is limited by the diffusion of gases through bulk calcium oxide and through a layer of carbonate formed on the surface. In addition, the regeneration of calcium oxide is an endothermic reaction and is favored at high temperatures. The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to address the diffusion limitation, a thin layer of calcium oxide, supported on a high surface area material, is studied thermogravimetrically to demonstrate the physical adsorption of carbon dioxide on calcium oxide. The adsorption is to take place at temperatures lower than required to form calcium carbonate.

How to quantitatively identify the loads on a square/arch set is a complicated issue in designing the square/arch set in an intersection/entry. From an engineering perspective, understanding the nature and support mechanism of standing support such as a square/arch set can not only help design the support structure to maintain the roof stability, but save the steel materials and costs of manufacturing, labor, and delivery. Based on the design practices in recent years and successful applications in slope bottom intersections, the authors are confident that the concept of interaction and confinement effect between the steel square/arch set and surrounding rocks is critical in designing a proper steel structure to support an intersection/entry. This paper will detail the design concept and its applications in several underground slope bottom intersection designs, reaching the goals of improving roof stability and reducing costs.

The application of the QEM*SEM image acquisition and analysis system to the measurement of the mineral matter in coal and the materials in fly ash is described. A new sample mounting technique was developed using iodinated epoxy to provide a backscattered electron contrast between the coal, the mounting medium and the mineral matter. Several comprehensive and detailed species identification programs for silicate minerals and materials were developed to analyse the 1000 count x-ray spectra used for the measurements. Case studies are presented to demonstrate the capabilities of the new technique to distinguish different coals and fly ashes by their mineral and material composition rather than by conventional chemical analysis. Applications of the new technique are aimed at demonstrating that composition and size distributions obtained from OEM*SEM measurements can be used: 1. to characterize coal with respect to combustion problems in power stations, 2. to characterize coal for fine coal cleaning, 3. to characterize fly ashes in relation to problems such as erosion in combustion systems and the ease of precipitability in dust collection facilities, 4. to refine the classification systems used in marketing coal for pulverized fuel firing and fly ashes as a component of cement and building materials.

Mineral Resource Technologies(MRT) and Michigan Technological University (MTU)finalized an agreement that permits MRT to offer an advanced carbon removal technology process for coal fly ash from an ash residue generated by utilities. The agreement encompasses the dominant existing US patents using a wet process for fly ash enhancement. The wet process for coal beneficiation of a fly ash product involves four steps. First, a slurry mixture is formed of a fly ash material and a liquid. Second, gravity is used to separate and collect a first-material fraction of the fly ash, having a density less than the liquid. This is done by skimming off the flotation slurry material.

Partition models are commonly used to assess the separation performance of circuits incorporating density-based processes. Unfortunately, this useful tool has traditionally been overlooked by the heavy minerals sands industry due to difficulties associated with the use of toxic dense liquids. In the present study, this problem has been avoided via the development of partition models based on experimental data from microscopic grain-counts. This technique, which uses different mineral species as density tracers, provides a new tool for evaluating the multi-stage circuits that are required to successfully upgrade heavy mineral sands. The partition model approach easily identifies shortcomings of existing circuits and, when used with conjunction with linear circuit analysis, provides tremendous insight regarding the optimum arrangement of unit operations in terms of separation efficiency and plant throughput capacity. An industrial case involving the redesign of a heavy mineral sand spiral plant is presented to demonstrate the utility of these process engineering tools in plant optimization.

Utilization of belt air in underground coal mines has been discussed extensively during the last decade. The Final Report of the Technical Study Panel on the Utilization of Belt Air and the Composition and Fire Retardant Properties of Belt Materials in Underground Coal Mining formed by the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act of 2006 recommends research on leakage, use of booster fans, and escapeway safety. This paper discusses the role of ventilation modeling in evaluating primary escapeway pressurization in a three-entry development system to improve emergency escape in a coal mine using belt air. The intake entry of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Bruceton Experimental Mine was pressurized using a 1.1-m (42-in.) diameter, 37 kW (50 hp) fan. The work details air movement in the simulated three-entry system and the resulting leakage patterns. Three mine ventilation software packages were compared to analyze their performance in predicting the airflows and leakage conditions with different fan settings. NIOSH researchers found that the measurement results correlated well with the results of modeling.

Introduction The efficient process control of a uranium mill and its associated mining operation requires a nearly continuous knowledge of the uranium concentration in the ore. Generally, the approach is to use laboratory assays of grab samples from the mill feed belt. In some cases, elaborate and expensive systems have been used to ensure random sampling, but even with these systems, mass-balance discrepancies still exist. There is a requirement for an on-line instrument that can give a prompt, accurate analysis of a large portion of the feed stock. The authors have recently evaluated a laboratory system that achieves these goals using neutron activation and delayed neutron counting. The development of the on-line uranium ore analyzer is a consequence of previous work done at the Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment (WNRE) (Campbell et al., 1978 and 1981), and is based on the emission of delayed neutrons after the neutron irradiation of fissionable materials. The mechanism of delayed neutron emission has been described (Keepin, 1965), but briefly is as follows. The fission fragments resulting from irradiation are in an excited state. Certain of these delayed fission products, precursors, decay to a more stable state by the emission of a delayed neutron. The delayed neutrons can be divided into six groups with effective half-lives ranging from 0.2-55 sec. It is important to note that more than 50% of the delayed neutrons are emitted within the first 6 sec after irradiation; this has an influence on the design of the analysis instrument. Measurement Cycle The measurement cycle involves a neutron irradiation, a delay time, and a counting period. The laboratory demonstration model of the ore analyzer comprises a californium-252 neutron source, a source chamber, a pneumatic transfer facility, and a neutron irradiation and counting module (Fig. 1). The ore sample is placed in the irradiation chamber. The neutron source is transferred to the center of the chamber for a 5-sec irradiation while the helium-3 thermal neutron detectors are switched off. As the source returns to the storage chamber, the detectors are switched on and the delayed neutrons counted. The total assay cycle is 16 sec. The current instrument design calls for the ore to be cut from the main belt every 16 sec by a mechanical arm and dropped into the analyzer directly, or via another belt. The cycle starts when there is a sufficient mass of ore in the irradiation chamber to depress a switch and stops when the delayed neutron count is finished. The ore is then dropped through the bottom of the analyzer chamber and returned to the main belt. The counts from each cycle are accumulated and the data reduced to give the desired information. The source is contained in an iron capsule and pneumatically transferred between the irradiation/counting and storage chambers. The irradiation/counting chamber possesses 12, 600-mm (24-in.) long helium-3 thermal neutron detectors embedded in an annulus of wax (Fig. 1). Two sets of six detectors are each interfaced to a preamplifier, amplifier and single-channel pulseheight analyzer system, and the two systems are connected to a scaler. A special timing unit controls the transfer of the source and the on and off switching of the detector assembly, in sequence with the movement of the source. Results and Discussion In the experimental demonstration, using the 107 neutron.s-1 source, a 10% uranium ore was measured to ± 10% (2o total error) in 10 cycles and ±6% (2o) in 100 cycles. Since a larger source was not available, it can be statistically predicted that a 109 neutron-s-1 source could be used to measure a 0.1% ore to ± 10% (20) in 10 cycles. Mina Santa Rosa, in west central Panama, is the first large-scale gold mine in Panama and will soon be the largest single-mine gold producer in central America (Fig. 1). At full production, the mine will process 1.8 Mt/a (2 million stpy) of ore and produce more than 1.8 t/a (60,000 oz/year) of gold and 9.3 t/a(300,000 oz/year) of silver. Mina Santa Rosa is a subsidiary of Greenstone Resources of Toronto, Ontario. Freeport-McMoRan geologists first visited the area in 1985. Their rock chip sampling adjacent to old shafts and adits confirmed widespread gold and trace element geochemistry anomalies. Surface mineralization appeared to be localized in and adjacent to narrow veinlets. However, they recognized astructural setting similar to the Nevada Tertiary volcanic-hosted epithermal gold systems.

"Automated Mineralogy (AM) is an important diagnostic tool in flotation plants as it adds ore and particle mineralogical properties to traditional mass and chemical data. AM is used in project development, for future ore studies and for diagnosing concentrator operations. With the exception of operations who own central laboratory or on-site systems, the use of AM is often limited to the analysis of a comparatively small set of samples. Metrix Plant Technologies has partnered with TESCAN to integrate TIMA AM technology into the implementation of Performance Assessment Campaigns (PAC). Routine daily composite samples from the mill are analysed mineralogically on a size-by-size basis over several weeks. All the relevant metallurgical, process control and mineralogical data is combined into a single large database for mass balancing and interactive examination. This paper describes the implementation and results of a PAC at the Agnico Eagle Kittilä gold mine in Finland. Although challenging, the addition of mineralogical data as dependent variables in multivariate analysis leads to a much deeper understanding of the root cause effect of events driving the flotation performance. INTRODUCTION TO STUDY The Kittilä mine, owned by Agnico Eagle, is Europe’s largest primary gold mine, with annual production of approximately 180,000 Oz. The operation is located in Lapland in northern Finland, and is currently expected to operate until 2035. The location of the operation is shown in Figure 1. Historically, the mine was an open pit, although in recent years ore is sourced solely from underground operations. The processing plant features crushing and grinding, followed by carbon flotation and sulphide flotation. Carbon concentrate is a waste stream, and sulphide concentrate reports to pressure oxidation (autoclave) and CIL circuits for gold extraction. The final flowsheet is shown in Figure 2. Following commissioning in late 2008, the operation achieved commercial production on May 1st 2009. Gold recovery in flotation gradually increased to a 92-96% range at a throughput of ~3500-4000 tonnes per day. In late 2014, the operation commissioned a plant expansion to ~5000 tonnes per day. Following a commissioning period, the operation stabilised with recoveries in a 90-94% range, which over any given period was determined to be ~2% lower with statistical significance. The trends from start-up of gold recovery in flotation and throughput are shown as follows in Figure 3. In early 2016, Agnico Eagle Kittilä mine, along with Agnico Eagle Technical Services (AETS) partnered with Metrix Plant Technologies and TESCAN, to perform a Performance Assessment Campaign (PAC) at Kittilä, involving automated mineralogy on five key streams at Kittilä on 40 days selected from a 50 day period between February 15th and April 4th 2016, when plant operations were stable. In addition to the mineralogical data, metallurgical and operational data were pooled into a single, powerful database to explore opportunities for the operation to improve recovery in a sustained manner, ideally to the levels pre-expansion."

Considerable attention has been given to the restoration of low-level radioactive (<1000 pCl/g) sites contaminated during the early years of the atomic energy program. Current clean-up activities which involve the relocation of contaminated soils to licensed disposal sites have been shown to be very costly due to the large volumes of soils which must be excavated, transported and stored. Recent characterization studies conducted at Virginia Tech suggest that the volume of soil requiring disposal can be greatly reduced using mineral processing techniques such as classification, density separation and froth flotation. This article discusses the application of these technologies for soil remediation and describes a conceptual flowsheet for treating soil samples from two contaminated sites.

All parameters influencing the decision for selection of a suitable extraction method were first selected as the base of this study. Then these parameters were categorized in two main groups. The first group of the parameters includes ?geomechanical and inherent characteristics of the dimension stones? such as hardness, RQD, compressive strength, joints plane orientation and spacing, and water content. The second group was named ?technical and economical parameters associated with the investor?s objectives? like for example extraction capacity (production rate), blocks recovery, mechanization, capital investment and operational costs. Finally, the influences of all mentioned parameters on the selection of the most applicable extraction methods have been assessed and discussed.

"When considering large-scale infrastructure projects worldwide special attention has to be paid to the large diameter tunnel construction projects that were successfully completed in the Southern Hemisphere. The projects that are highlighted in this paper are large-scale infrastructure projects in the sector of transport. In focus are four road tunnel projects that were constructed in Australia and New Zealand using mechanized tunnelling technology. The tunnel boring machines (TBMs) that were reliably applied to these four major projects all exceed the bore diameter of 12 meters. These TBMs are therefore in the range of large to very large diameter TBMs. The technology used demonstrates state of the art technology with tailored tunnelling technology adapted to the specific project demands. Two Double Shielded Hard Rock TBMs (Ø 12.35 meters) were used for the construction of the Clem Jones Tunnel in Brisbane crossing beneath the Brisbane River and these two machines have been reused for the excavation of a 4.3km long two-lane highway tunnel for Legacy Way in Brisbane creating a new traffic artery towards the city centre. Two EPB Shields (Ø 12.48 meters) excavated and lined the twin-tube road tunnel for the Brisbane Airport Link. Excavation diameters in excess of 14 meters, such as the Earth Pressure Balance Shield (Ø 14.41 meters) involved in the Waterview Connection Project in New Zealand, are understood in the tunnelling industry as very large diameters. The machine is customized to the requirements and subsurface conditions of Auckland. The paper spotlights the large to very large diameter TBMs that were used and focuses on the comprehensive solutions developed by the machine manufacturer to provide a system with benefits for the contractor especially for the Waterview Project. INTRODUCTION Extensive large-scale road infrastructure projects like the ones implemented in Brisbane (Australia) and currently under construction in Auckland (New Zealand) show the tendency of today’s infrastructure construction projects. Functional infrastructures need to be put in place to cope with the demand of mobility and flexibility of people living in cities and metropolises. Impact during construction work to people or environment has to be kept as low as possible to ensure the quality of life is not disrupted."

The effects of coal cleaning, coal combustion and flue gas particulate removal systems on the partitioning of 12 trace elements were investigated. This study was prepared to help document the fate of trace elements in modern coal preparation plants and coal-fired utility boilers. The coal cleaning data were obtained from several coal preparation plant operations. The CONSOL 1. 5 MM Btu/hr pilot combustion and electrostatic precipitator (particulate removal system) test facility was used to develop the combustion systems data. A comparison with the very limited amount of published data from utility boilers is presented.

Since the discovery of high temperature superconductors has led to extensive interest and conjecture regarding their potential to change contemporary technology, discussions of the impact on the metallurgical and other industries have naturally arisen. In this paper we present data showing the possible impact of these developments on the materials related to the fabrication and proliferation of devices based on superconductor materials. We observe that the largest volume of effort with LTSC will be for the demonstration of high power devices while applied research relating to processing will remain the principal HTSC activity. We also note that in the next decade copper consumption in the US is expected to remain essentially at the current level while the need for Nb and Sn,; two major components of LTSC, will grow at a faster rate both in the US and the world. Although the use of superconductor-based magnetic separation is anticipated to increase, no major impact of these components on the metallurgical industries is expected.

Coeur d&apos;Alene Mines Corporation (CDE) is a precious metals mining company. The company&apos;s three mining operations are located In Nevada and Idaho. Collectively, these mines (Rochester in Nevada, and the Galena and Coeur In Idaho) produced about 61,000 ounces of gold and more than 7.5 million ounces of silver in 1991. The company is currently planning the development of two major properties; the Fachinal gold-silver project in Chile and the Kensington gold project near Juneau, Alaska. Fachinal and Kensington hold encouraging potential to significantly expand CDE&apos;s gold production during this decade. The permitting process for these two distinctly contrasting environmental settings, project design requirements and regulatory/political circumstances provide the basis for a comparative analysis of licensing and permitting requirements, timeliness of the permitting process and costs in the U.S. and Chile.

A study has been conducted to remove iron from sulfate solutions using Eichrom&apos;s Dipexo® extractant, P,P&apos;-di(2ethylhexyl) methanediphosponic acid (H2DEH[MDP]). It is found that this extractant can effectively and selectively extract ferric ion from highly acidic solutions. Ninety-nine percent of the iron was extracted from a simulated feed solution in a single stage. The separation factor, Fe/Zn, was 106. Over 90% of the iron in a loaded organic can be recovered in an aqueous solution by reductive stripping. This paper presents the experimental results. A new process for iron removal using Dipex extractant is described and discussed.

With the exception of the development of large scale mining equipment (haul trucks, draglines, shovels, etc.), there are likely few other candidates responsible for the ability to exploit large tonnage, low grade deposits, than the development of large capacity comminution equipment and circuits; crushers and grinding mills. Ball mills are often the final step in the comminution process and are responsible for providing what should be the optimum particle size distribution of ore to subsequent mineral concentration steps in the flowsheet. Because comminution processes are such high cost centers for milling operations, both capital and operating costs, an enormous amount of research has been conducted to study and model their performance, in order to improve efficiencies (Kelsall, et al., 1969; Austin et al., 1984; Napier-Munn, et al., 1999; Powell and Smit, 2001). With respect to modeling ball mills, estimates of the breakage rates for individual size classes of ore particles are fundamental, as are the particle size class breakage functions (the progeny of particle sizes produced from breaking a coarser particle size class), also termed appearance functions. Fundamental research into particle breakage in tumbling mills focuses on how much energy is input into single particles versus how they break and what size distribution of particles results. Several test methods, including JKMRC?s well known dual pendulum test and drop weight test, have been developed for the breakage of coarse particles down to 6 mm in size (Napier-Munn, et al., 1999). Work on the breakage of finer particles is still an area of intense research and single particle breakage is being investigated as are multiple particle, fixed bed methods (Hoffler and Herbst, 1990; Bourgeois et al., 1992; Whiten, 2007).

On April 30, 2003, representatives of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc.(SME) met with the staff of the Division of Corporation Finance of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The meeting was held to discuss issues related to the estimation and publication of mineral resources and ore reserves. It took place in the Washington, D.C. offices of the SEC. SEC staff members included Roger Schwall, assistant director, Division of Corporation Finance; Jill Davis, senior accountant; Roger Baer, senior mining engineer; Carl Chavez, chief mining engineer; Ron Winfrey, senior petroleum engineer; and John Murphy, senior petroleum engineer. Computer simtiation is a technique that has beers around for many years. Its applications include designing steel mills, planning space shota, or even developing ways to beat the casinos in Las Vegas. However, the use of computer sirndation in surface coal mining is fairly recent. To promote its use, several government agencies, including the US Bureau of Mines, Forest Service, and Department of Energy, contracted with universities and private companies to develop computer simulation programs for surface coal mining.
