Since the introduction of froth flotation, the Florida Phosphate Industry has faced the challenge of coarse particle -850 +425µm (-20 +35 Tyler mesh) beneficiation. Several techniques have been used to upgrade this difficult size range. This paper discusses one approach that has met with success; namely, improved fractional recoveries through enhanced areation and improved material transport characteristics via larger than standard flotation cell mechanisms.

The titanium dioxide pigment industry in the United States has always relied to varying degrees on imported titanium concentrates. Dependence on foreign ilmenite was especially high (generally over 85% of consumption) until 1942, when large-scale U.S. production of ilmenite began, and has since ranged from 12% to 47%. Rutile import reliance was generally in the 45% to 80% range until the early 1960's, when increased use in the chloride pigment process raised dependence on imported rutile to over 90% in most years since 1963. Import reliance of zircon, obtained almost entirely as a byproduct of titanium mineral production, has generally ranged from about 30% to 65% of consumption. This paper will examine the history of U.S. sources of these heavy mineral commodities, and will discuss the potential U.S. future supply in view of changing industrial uses and processes and the anticipated development of new heavy-mineral-sand processing operations, such as those at Richards Bay in the Republic of South Africa and in Sierra Leone.

We describe a new software product designed for the net present value optimization of multi-open-pit blended ore operations in which it is desired and/or necessary to dump some or all of the waste rock produced in the course of operations back into the voids created in the process of ore extraction. The software product simultaneously decides over the entire life-of-mine which material to mine in which year, once mined what to do with it, and where to put that material which it has decided to waste, all subject to annual blend and capacity constraints.

"INTRODUCTION Drill and blast (DnB) represents the most important, and sometimes the most costly processes in a mine.. The cost of drilling and blasting operations greatly contributes to the “high cost trends of the overall mining operations” (Afum B. O. and Temeng V. A. 2015). The use of available information to improve the DnB processes can be the difference between a highly expensive process and an optimized one. Mining operations have access to several types of data sets and key information from a wide variety of different systems. This information is normally used to improve, evaluate and apply processes for drilling and blasting. This may include different types of data from the different stages of the process (before, during, and after the drilling and blasting operations), such as hole locations (planned and actual), penetration rates, drill operators, fragmentation (expected and resulting), explosive (design and usage), geology, vibration, and others. This information can be used on its own or combined for further analysis to reduce costs, improve safety, and evaluate results. Fortunately, due to advances in mining software, drill and blast engineers can exploit this data and create reports to evaluate results and improve the DnB process. However, as users start combining information from multiple datasets and establishing standard operating procedures for reporting this data across multiple sites, it becomes valuable to create auditable, automated, and sustainable processes for handling the information. In many cases the task of aggregating and standardizing the data formats has already been completed and is available to consumers via the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). A data warehouse team extracts data from the source systems and transforms it so that it is meaningful for decision support (Barbara H. Wixom, Hugh J. Watson, 2007). Our initial implementation plan for the DnB solution included using data stored at the sites; however we learned early on in the process that much of the work for aggregating and supplying the required data was already completed. The goal for this case study is two-fold: to show how information can be used to make decisions and improve processes, highlighting the value of using an EDW for managing Drill&Blast information; and to discuss how technical challenges encountered during the implementations were resolved. This paper is targeted at users that want to better manage their DnB data or try to set up standardized workflows for using this information. This case study will discuss the process of implementing a DnB workflow at multiple sites within Freeport McMoRan Inc (FMI) using both data at the sites and information available using the EDW. The paper will begin with an overview of the project. The discussion will then describe how DnB processes were used to set up daily workflows in order to provide information for evaluating process and making decisions. The final section will discuss some of the technical challenges and how they were solved, as well as possible next steps for further improving the workflow."

When originally accepting the assignment, the Client had described the property as vacant land. A prior appraisal was later discovered and revealed that the property included a mineral rights appraisal. Further research disclosed an old dispute with a court ruling based on testimony by AIMA-certified experts. The present appraisal was therefore based on data from findings of the court with a fresh look at discount rate, absorption period, and residual land value. Fortuitously, the property subsequently sold on the market, while meeting all criteria for Fair Market Value. This provided insight into a market-based discount rate. Also, the absorption period could be adjusted in accordance with the current market conditions. The residual land value was minimal (based on comparable sales and projecting trends in market) as the property was affected by a flood zone and the surrounding development was sparse. PROPERTY HISTORY: A GREAT INVESTMENT Briefly, the subject property is located in the floodplain region of the San Jacinto River, a short river in southeastern Texas that flows into Galveston Bay, filled with sand and gravel. This location is on the north side of Houston, north of Beltway 8 on the east side of I-59.

Is the laboratory sized coal specimen much stronger than underground coal pillars? The answer to this question has a profound implication to many coal operators. It will decide how much of the coal reserve can be recovered. Or, in many cases, it will determine whether it can be mined economically. Recent trends in several eastern states to establish regulations regarding coal pillar design to prevent surface subsidence long after mining heighten the debates. And, in some cases, these trends highlight the existing practices that seriously question the conventional wisdom. Currently, nearly all researchers and practitioners agree that as the size of rock specimens increases, its strength decreases. This concept has been universally adopted as the basic principle for coal pillar design in the United States. Several formulas have been derived to account for this effect. The reduction factor for underground coal pillars ranges from one-half to one-sixth of the strength obtained in the laboratory, depending on the formula selected. Recent case studies indicate that the reduction factor is not justifiable, at east in some cases. The use of a reduction factor is based on the assumption hat smaller rock specimens as tested in he laboratory contain none or fewer fractures or planes of weakness than larger specimens or underground coal pillars. In other words, the larger the rock materials, the more fractures it contains and subsequently weaker in strength. Do all underground coal pillars have more fractures than laboratory sized coal specimens? Not necessarily. All coal contains cleats. Some are con¬spicuous but others are not. In terms of cleat density (number of cleats per unit area), there is no difference between an underground coal pillar and a laboratory sized specimen, provided the specimen size is larger than the cleat spacing, which is mostly 25 to 75 mm (1 to 3 in.).

A computerized on-line process control system designed to monitor and control the seven-cone copper precipitation operations at Kennecott Copper Corporation's Chino Mines Division in New Mexico has been continuously operating since April, 1972. The cone monitoring system consists of plant sampling components, process measurement instrumentation, on-stream X-ray spectrometer, control computer, typewriters for programming and for operating reports, foreman's communication console, and cone automation hardware. The system provides the following functions: (1) assays for copper and iron from ten process streams on a continuous rotating basis, (2) directs hardware to automatically flush and start up cone units based on measured performance variables, (3) provides continuous plant operating data and calculates metallurgical averages as well as production figures for shift and daily summaries, and (4) provides data logging capabilities. The system is very reliable and improves plant performance by increasing yields, reducing scrap iron consumption, and reducing operating manpower requirements.

With most of the mining industry emerging from the deepest business recession in 50 years, primary attention must be given to surviving in a business climate where dominant foreign competition, depressed prices, and potential overcapacity hang heavy over much of the industry. While already shackled with regulatory constraints, restrictive work rules, and high labor costs, mine operators are faced with the difficult task of reducing costs and improving productivity while operating at less than full capacity. To counter these nearly over-whelming factors, the mining industry must continue at the national level to seek regulatory relief and a rational policy toward foreign competition from government-controlled mines. In addition, dialogue with labor organizations must continue to minimize the impact of labor costs, cost escalators, and antiquated work practices. Although national and international actions have a tremendous impact on the future of domestic mining operations, local actions by mine operators to dramatically improve mining productivity will strengthen the industry's competitive stance. Before any substantial progress can be made, however, mine operators must recognize and define areas that depress productivity and establish goals and measures for improvement. Once problem areas are defined, a combination of technological and motivational concepts can be applied to improve productivity. Timing of Improvements While there is an immediate need for productivity improvements, only certain concepts offer near-term improvement potential while others must, of necessity, fit into a mid-range or long-range time frame. Near-term solutions (immediate to one year) likely will involve motivational concepts - work incentives and training - coupled with available technological concepts that require little capitalized development or site testing. Mid-range solutions (one to three years), by contrast, will include technological improvements in mining equipment, techniques, and systems automation. These concepts require a longer period of capitalized development and site testing before use. Long-range solutions (three years or more), which include adoption of new mining methods and computerized control systems, will appear only after prolonged research and capitalized development programs. In spite of the importance of the presence of pyrite in the flotation of sulphide ores, not many studies have been made from the electrochemical point of view. It is generally recognized that the oxidation of sulphide minerals is one of the most Important factors among those which affect the floatability of sulphide minerals. The concept that the presence of oxygen is essential to the flotation of sulphide minerals is supported by numerous experimental results (1). The presence of oxygen in sulphide minerals- aqueous solution systems would affect the electrochemical behaviour of sulphide minerals and subsequently lead to more complicated reactions on the surface of sulphides. Actually some of the phenomena observed in sulphide flotation are deemed to be more appropriately explained from the electrochemical point of view. The author and co-workers have studied extensively the electrode reactions of pyrite and its significance in sulphide flotation. The results have been partly published elsewhere (2-7). In this paper, the author discusses the electrochemical nature of pyrite, and the three different phenomena observed in pyrite flotation: (1) Xanthate¬dixanthogen system on pyrite, (2) Flotation of complex sulphide ores containing pyrite and (3) Depressive mechanisms of pyrite with cyanide. The phenomenon which has been known as an iron contamination effect due to steel grinding media on sulphide flotation is also explained from the electrochemical aspect. However, this problem is not directly concerned with pyrite, and it will be discussed elsewhere (8).

The majority of the regulations in Part 75 for underground coal mines have been in effect since March of 1970, almost nine years now. Although there have been some additions each year in specific areas where the need became apparent or the statute required some action, the bulk was promulgated on March 28, 1970 for the purpose of clarifying the statutory provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Many of those regulations were derived from the Federal Mine Safety Code, or from experience gained by the Bureau of Mines in the enforcement of Public Law 552. Upon passage of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, these same regulations remained in effect and the statutory requirements of the Act placed a responsibility upon the Secretary of Labor to promulgate additional regulations in specific areas not previously covered. The Federal inspectorate has received formal training at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy in the proper application of the regulations, as well as routine retraining and special training courses subsequent to the promulgation of new regulations. With some exceptions, the vast majority of these regulations are nothing more than good mining practice. Basically, the regulatory problems are two-fold. There are a few specific regulations that, under certain circumstances, compliance is nearly, if not actually, impossible. There is non-uniform application of enforcement of regulations by the inspectorate based on opinions developed from personal experience of inspectors or lack of experience. The record is replete with examples of overzealous inspectors applying regulations that either do not exist or have been stretched far beyond the intent of the regulations.

Most mineral processes currently in use, such as flotation, spirals, gravity concentrators, etc., are only effective over a small range of sizes, hence the upstream need for technology to accurately classify fines by size. The Pansep’s design is revolutionary. Slurry is fed onto connected mesh sections that move without bending or vibration, in a circular motion. Both sides of the screen mesh are utilized, so Panseps are self-cleaning and has half the footprint of other mesh-type screens. Developed in South Africa in 1997, the Pansep has proved itself very effective as a wet fines screen to effectively classify fine mineral fractions from 50 to 2,000 micron (325 to 10 mesh).

The market for titanium feedstocks (ilmenite, rutile,synthetic rutile and slag) is driven primarily by offtake from the titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigment industry. The pigment sector depends on the performance of the global economy. Titanium sponge is the first stage of titanium metal manufacture. It constitutes a minor component (3 percent) of overall demand for titanium feed-stocks. Production and consumption TiO2 pigment consumption in 2004 was estimated to be 4.63 Mt (5.1 million st), up 7.6 percent from 2003. It was driven by strong demand in most regions. In the United States, apparent TiO2 pigment consumption rebounded by 5.4 percent (highest growth rate since 1997) to an estimated 1.12 Mt (1.23 million st), following the decrease in demand during 2003. Chinese TiO2 pigment consumption continued its strong upward trend, increasing by 10 percent to 598 kt (659,000 st) in 2004.

During the last decade various modifications of room and pillar and sub-level methods have been tried in an effort to eliminate gob-fires, dangers from roof falls, surface subsidence and to increase efficiency of extraction in the Armutcuk Mine, Turkey. It was eventually decided that the most likely system to give maximum benefits in view of existing geological conditions and coal seam characteristics was a system of cut-and-fill stoping employing hydraulic stowing. This paper has attempted to examine the trends of working techniques of hydraulic stowing. In addition, the results achieved and technical problems involved are discussed.

Weir Minerals ? Linatex has developed a new approach to the dewatering of fine solids, particularly mine and process plant tailings and wastes. The Weir process, patented in 2009, uses standard process equipment in a standard flow sheet, but applies this approach to materials previously thought to be too fine to be dewatered with this type of equipment. The process can be applied to a wide range of materials, making lower moisture products that can be re-used elsewhere or sent to disposal. It has already been tested successfully on a small scale in Australia on coal fines, zinc mine tailings, red mud, iron ore tails, and copper/gold tailings. The principal factors affecting the solids recovery have been established as: 1. The % solids in the slurry feed to the process ? a higher % solids provides a higher recovery. 2. The particle size of the feed solids ? coarser feeds provide higher recoveries. The key factors affecting the % solids in the dewatered product have been determined to be: 1. The particle size of the dewatered product - coarser materials produce a higher % solids in the dewatered product. 2. The height of the discharge weir on the dewatering screen - a higher discharge weir on the dewatering screen also yields a higher % solids. 3. The angle of the dewatering screen. Setting the screen horizontal increases the travel rate, reduces the bed depth and reduces the % solids in the dewatered product. Back-sloping the screen up to 5° reduces the travel rate and increases the % solids in product. Eight plants ranging in size from 3 t/h to 40 t/h have been sold to a range of customers in China, for coal and iron ore tailings treatment. Australia has one plant, a small unit rated at 30 t/h of sand fines, and has recently completed test work on iron ore tailings for a dewatering plant rated at 135 t/h. Additional tests are under way with clients around Australia, to demonstrate the capabilities of this process on specific applications and to provide confirmation that materials can be processed successfully, before moving on to larger scale tests or full size plants. The advantages of the Weir process include - lower moisture in products, uses proven equipment, lower capital and operating costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced power consumption, compact footprint, can be used in parallel or in series with existing equipment, modular design to facilitate redundancy or expansion, efficient water recovery and simpler water management, reduced cement in backfill mixes, smaller tailings disposal footprint, reduced earthworks requirements, much lower seepage losses, more stable tailings mass, progressive site rehabilitation, reduced impact on local wildlife, reduced risk of dam wall failure, and reduced environmental monitoring and compliance costs.

For the past 30 years there has been a gradual evolution of mechanical excavating systems in underground hard rock mining applications. This paper traces many of the tests of various tools and methods to break hard rock, up to the present. The tools include impact hammers, boring machines, disc on boom mining machines, disc on revolving wheels and drums, picks and drag bits on revolving hubs, rock splitters, slot cutting systems, and with customized explosives/powder mini-blasting. While the progress has been slow, successes are being achieved in hard rock and more opportunities exist today than ever before.

"The Functional Performance Equation calculated from a plant grinding survey defines two distinct ball mill circuit efficiencies and how they relate to total production rate through the target grind size. The survey data are also used to calculate a complete ball mill size distribution model, represented by the energy specific grinding rates, not just through the target grind size, but through all the size classes. Cyclone separation performance is represented by individual size recoveries to underflow. When these two unit operation performances are entered into the circuit modelling program (Streamline™), along with the circuit feed rate and size distribution, all the circuit survey size distributions and mass flows are perfectly regenerated by the program. The many issues associated with the historical Epstein (breakage-selection) models are eliminated. Once the circuit program is populated, pump and cyclone performance changes can be evaluated using a step-by-step procedure in order to maximize Classification System Efficiency. Mill water use and media sizing opportunities are also diagnosed in order to maximize Mill Grinding Efficiency at the size of interest. An example is provided. This circuit analysis and modelling system, and related training, is provided through a web-based application. INTRODUCTION Since its development (McIvor, 1988), the Functional Performance Equation for ball milling has facilitated new understanding of industrial circuit cause and effect relationships, leading to significant strides in operational performance. Success stories of this refreshing approach to plant circuit performance improvement are now too numerous to list. Finch and McIvor (circa 1986) also discovered that the Functional Performance “Mill Grinding Rate” at the size of interest was the same cumulative grinding rate that is calculated from mill feed and discharge size distributions using a first-order rate equation. By calculating these cumulative grinding rates for all screen sizes, a complete ball mill model is generated (as used by Finch and Ramirez, 1981). Others in industry, Hinde and Kalala (2009), for example, have noted the same. Lacking the complexity needed to maintain their interest, most researchers have ignored this model, broadly opting instead for Epstein’s (1948) characterization of grinding as a chemical reaction, combining “selection rate” and “breakage size distribution” functions. The much simpler ball mill model presented here has previously been incorporated into a proprietary circuit modeling program (McIvor, 2005) and used for plant improvement work (for example, see McIvor and Finch, 2007, and McIvor, 2014). Now, by combining this extremely business-friendly ball mill model with optimization criteria from Functional Performance Analysis, a circuit modeling system (including the needed supplementary steps to assure successful plant implementation of circuit design changes) is at the disposal of every plant metallurgist, grinding equipment/material provider, and circuit designer."

1. INTRODUCTION According to the classical economic approach of the open market economy, copper supply should be regulated by market forces which are (a) demand and (b) prices. In fact, demand is of primordial importance because prices are a reflection of supply-demand balance: they go up in times of shortages of supply and down when over-supply situation exists. In the past few years, this basic mechanism of market economy has been under pressure from a number of non-market forces, such as social and monetary problems of sane important copper producing countries; structural changes in copper mining companies through mergers with oil companies; and other factors which greatly contributed to distortion of the basic supply-¬demand equation. As a result, we have faced in the last three years a situation of oversupply rarely seen in the past, with a catastrophic fall in copper prices, huge losses at mines and unprecedented indebtedness of copper producers. This has deep repercussions in the copper business and its future supply outlook. This is particularly so when taking into consideration that high indebtedness and high interest rates conspire against the very survival of some traditional producers. As we write this comment (July of 1985), close to one half of U.S. copper production capacity is closed down, sane of it for good, while the same precarious situation exists in Canada, Australia, Zambia, and some other primary producers who cannot face present low prices with equally low costs. The question is then what this situation means for the medium-¬term future, until the end of this decade, Particularly when taking into consideration the fact that some of the factors influencing it are of a long-term character. 2. SUPPLY-DEMAND SITUATION IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS Since the last boon year, in 1979, when world copper consumption reached a record of 9.8 million metric tons of refined copper, demand dropped to only 9.0 million tons in 1982, when the crisis bottomed out, and then steadily recovered to the level of 9.7 million tons in 1984. Meanwhile, copper production, which in 1979 was only 9.4 million tons, in spite of the fall in demand, grew to 9.7 million tons in 1981 and 1983 and only temporarily was cut to 9.4 million tons in 1982 and to 9.5 million tons in 1984. As a result of this imbalance, hugh copper stocks were accumulated with supply systematically out¬growing demand by over 2 million tons at one time. With the Western World refined copper demand running at an average of 115,000 tons per week, this oversupply was equivalent to between 15 and 18 weeks production, i.e. twice as large as normal. This was immediately reflected in very low copper prices. Another contributing factor to relatively low copper prices was the lack of speculator interest for this commodity. Between 1981 and 1984 the world experienced a very intensive period of wealth distribution, high interest rates and intensive restructuring off world economy and its industrial sector. Therefore, much of the available money was attracted to more lucrative and attractive investments rather than to the lack-luster performance of copper, and for that matter, of the metal sector in general. The much announced and discussed recovery of the U.S. economy since 1983, and particularly in 1984, with an overall growth of the GNP by 6.8% in 1984, happened to be more oriented to the service sector than the industrial sector and therefore this recovery was not adequately reflected in copper consumption nor to metals in general. This put serious doubts about the future demand for copper. Consequently copper prices failed to improve in spite of an apparent fall in stocks and a healthy increase in the demand for copper since 1982. At the time of this writing (July, 1985), although same analysts claim that the available stocks are running at about 8 weeks of supply, which are considered to be below normal, copper prices are still very low at between 65 and 67 cents per pound of copper. The effect of sulfur dioxide on collectorless and collector induced flotation of chalcopyrite was studied by cyclic voltammetry on a rotating disc electrode. Contact angle measurements were made to determine the effect of sulfur dioxide concentration and electrochemical treatment. The benefits of sulfur dioxide in enhancing the selectivity of separating chalcopyrite from complex sulfide ores are discussed.

A 5 year test program, involving on-line, in-vessel exposures at Barrick Goldstrike Mines. Inc. has provided valuable information and experience about the materials and designs for brickwork linings in pressure oxidation autoclaves. A variety of brick and mortar products have been evaluated. Properties before and after exposure are used to document the performance. Benefits have included the development of a new silicate mortar improved understanding of brick requirements and increased autoclave operating time between maintenance shut-downs. More improvements are expected in the future based on further information from the test program.
