In recent years drivage advance rates in the UK have in- creased from 35m per week in the 1980's to 100/150m per week possible today. These extended rates of advance have resulted in an increase in the potential methane, dust and heat generation at the drivage face. In order to disperse this additional pollutant load requires an increase of fresh air at the face. Although advance rates have changed, current auxiliary ventilation practice has not. UK mining law requires that the fresh air must be delivered to within 5m of the face. This has lead to the wide spread use of overlap auxiliary systems, since a pure forcing system set at this distance would lead to excessive airborne dust. UK mining law does not at present consider on-board mounted exhaust scrubber fans to constitute an effective overlap fan within mechanised drivages. In an attempt to determine whether working conditions could be safely and economically improved within mechanised drivages, a series of preliminary full scale gallery trials were con- ducted. A summary of the principal findings of these trials are presented together with an outline of a series of representative CFD simulations, scale model experiments.

The beach and offshore gold resources demonstrated at Nome, Alaska are some of the richest found in Alaska. They contain potentially significant resources that may be exploited in the future. Several companies have contributed to the exploration and reserve estimation in Nome offshore gold deposits. More than 3,000 holes were drilled and over 10,000 offshore samples were analyzed in the Nome offshore areas of approximately 40 km2. Those 3,000 plus drill hole logs were converted into digital formats comparable with ArcGIS software. Considerable amounts of mineral resources data were processed and visualized using ArcGIS 8.3 and its geostatistic, 3D analysis, and spatial analysis components. In this study, based on the data processing and visualization results of ArcGIS, a user-friendly website for mineral resource management and utilization is developed using ArcIMS 4.0.1. ArcIMS is a GIS solution to build and deliver maps, data, and tools over the Internet. The Nome offshore mineral resources website presents the geostatistic and GIS analysis information. This site allows clients to access the information and perform ArcGIS analysis, such as interactive data query, and map layers display of the gold resource distribution, average grade, gold reserve, and relative mineral resource estimation via remote computers. With linkage to other related mining web sites, this web site allows users to search for related publications and more flexibly manage the information. A few other appropriate customized tools are also being developed to assist interactions between the server and clients for data analysis and management.

5.1 INTRODUCTION Heap leach cyanidation techniques possess considerable potential for exploitation of low-grade ores, small ore bodies, mine strip waste and tailing materials where fine grinding is not necessary for good extraction. For heap leaching to be successfu1, ore must exhibit certain characteristics, as previously discussed in Chapter 1. Primary among the necessary ore characteristics is that the ore must have good permeability after being crushed or treated and stacked into heaps if uniform distribution of the cyanide leach solution is to be achieved. Gold and silver ores containing excessive amounts of clays or fines generated by crushing are some of the most difficult to treat successfully by heap leaching. The presence of excessive amounts of slimes (generally classified as minus 50-micron or 270 Tyler mesh sieve size particles) in the heap leach feed will slow the percolation flow of the leach solution, cause channeling, or produce dormant or unleached areas within the heap. This may result in unreasonably long leaching periods and poor extractions. In extreme cases, the clays or slimes can completely seal the ore heap, causing the leach solution to run off the sides of the heap rather than to penetrate the ore heap. The problem of heap leaching ores containing fines can be aggravated during stacking and preparation of the ore heaps, because natural sorting of coarse and fine material occurs during these steps (Johanson, 1978). This phenomenon results in a concentration of ore fines at the center of individual ore piles and a concomitant concentration of larger rock fragments on the lower slopes and base of the piles. When the individual piles within the heap are leveled off prior to installation of the sprinkling system which delivers the leach solution, additional segregation occurs as the fines sift through the coarser ore particles. The segregation results in localized areas or zones with marked differences in permeability. As a consequence, the leach solutions follow the path of least resistance, percolating downward through the coarse ore regions and bypassing or barely wetting areas that contain large amounts of fines or slimes. Effective utilization of marginal gold and silver resources through heap leach processing requires the development of new methods in order to achieve more uniform size distribution during ore heap preparation and better slime control during leaching.

Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) have more or less become the preferred method of tunneling in various ground conditions and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) or microprocessors are standard features on TBMs to monitor and record various sensory systems on the machine providing the possibility for machine automation and control. The data collected from these sensory systems and channeled through PLC is stored for real-time analysis or use by the operators. Based on typical construction specifications, part of the information collected in the process is shared with the project management team representing the owner. Machine data automatically acquired during TBM advance is typically processed by specialized software to offer the project team data visualization and evaluation options. Interfacing with Geographic Information System (GIS), Computer-Aided Design (CAD), 3-D geologic model, instrumentation data bases, and Document Management Systems (DMS) allows for developing Building Information Models (BIM) of the tunnel’s as-built condition. Application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) processes such as Machine Learning (ML) have already been used for analysis of data, including performance prediction of hard rock TBMs, and exhibited the potential of big data analytics in improving the productivity of the operations. This paper outlines anticipated disruptive technological advances with implications on geotechnical exploration, TBM operation, face condition tracking, subsurface risk allocation, and claims management in the future.

Titan Group’s environmental policy and Sharrcem’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) are the driving forces behind the development and implementation of a comprehensive Rehabilitation Plan at Dimce Quarry, which is the main raw material source for Sharrcem Cement Plant since the 1970’s, located in the municipality of Hani i Elezit in Kosovo. Based on an Environmental Impact Assessment Study and the approved Mining Plan and also on the principles prescribed in the Guidelines on Quarry Rehabilitation, released by the Cement Sustainability Initiative of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD-CSI), Sharrcem has adopted a quarry operation and rehabilitation process in line with the best practices in the mining and cement sector. This paper discusses the background for the development of the rehabilitation plan and the results of rehabilitation activities, as have been implemented over the last few years. The main objective of the progressive rehabilitation plan at Dimce Quarry is to restore the depleted pit and return it back to the original land owners for resettlement. To date approx. 3,4Ha of former mining area has been restored by backfilling and levelling of the depleted closed pit and returned back to owners, who have built their houses and turned it into a living area again. This Quarry has turned out to be a real composition and practical example of preserving and returning back the natural resources in a state compatible with the surrounding environment and with respect to the needs of the local stakeholders. The motivation for business to engage in rehabilitation activities in the first place lies in the belief that the development and implementation of a progressive and practical Quarry rehabilitation plan and restitution of the land will deliver significant environmental and social benefits that outweigh the long-term rehabilitation costs, while maintaining the company’s reputation.

Shredding is the usual first step in processing municipal solid waste (MSW) for resource recovery. This unit process requires high capital cost and, usually, considerable maintenance cost. In addition, some shredders at times will render certain components of the MSW in a form difficult to recover. This is particularly true in the way metal cans are distorted and the way glass is pulverized. A trommel screen was proposed (1) to pre-process packer truck refuse prior to shredding. Part of the logic for this step is that the portion of raw refuse already within the specified shredder output particle size range would bypass the primary shredder and proceed directly to further processing, such as to an air classifier or secondary shredder. This would reduce the throughput of the primary shredder and allow certain recoverable materials, such as glass, to remain in larger piece sizes, important for recovery. In this way, operating costs for the shredder would be reduced and the recoverability of materials, and hence the revenue, increased.

The single most unique design feature of the Centralia Coal Mine is the public information program. Just what the heck does public information have to do with the development of a coal mine? The utilities of today have had to build larger and larger plants to keep down the costs of power to the consumer. The large plants require huge amounts of capital, take up large areas of real estate, consume unprecedented amounts of coal, and generate large quantities of waste products which have to be reckoned with. Coal mines supplying these plants have also increased in size and production to meet the power plants' unending appetite for coal. This means the disturbance of great areas of land and significant alterations to the landscape. Today's public is greatly concerned about the environment in which he is living. The great size of a power plant with its large stacks, coal piles, and the coal mine with its large earth movers, disturbed acreages and the resulting waste products of both operations appears to present a threat to his environment. Because of this,' many power plants and coal mines are having public acceptance problems. This has resulted in the passage of stringent legislation and in some cases brought upon construction delays for major power plants.

Some executives believe a manager should be measured and compensated accordingly on the basis of his ability to improve the quality of his human organization. Officials in the coal mining industry have had a tough road to travel in this regard due to fluctuating coal production demands, contractual obligations, and improved mining equipment and methods. The time may have finally arrived when we are able to recruit, select, and develop men from the labor market to fill vacancies, This is particularly true of our maintenance organizations. Because of the importance of this responsible function and the types of skills required, we must develop an extensive improvement pro- gram. Anyone in the industry who fails to undertake a manpower audit and who accepts a philosophy which will not permit collective planning, organizing and con- trolling the improvement of the human element throughout his maintenance organization may certainly cause deterioration within his company.

The procedure to arrive at an energy efficient autogenous grinding plant is carried out in the following steps: First Step - Determine power requirements to grind a particular ore. This work carried out on small samples ground in a 450 mm diameter Aerofall Hill and the results are checked against a standard Bond Index test. Second Step - A bulk sample from the ore zone is ground in a 1.8 m diameter pilot mill. This work is carried on until the power objectives as indicated from the first step have been realized. Third Step - Correlate the pilot mill data, with the data from the numerous samples ground in the small 450 mm mill and arrive at design criteria for the commercial plant. Ensure commercial mill design will be suitable to obtain similar results as those obtained in the pilot mill.

The regional geologic setting is essentially a volcanic island arc built upon an oceanic basement, consisting of basalt and minor pelagic sediments (the Tinombo Formation of Eocene - lower Miocene age. Trail et. al. 1974). -- An east-west chain of intermediate and acid calc-alkaline volcanoes (the Bilungala Volcanics) was built on the oceanic basement during the Miocene. The Bilungala Volcanics are flanked to the north largely by contemporaneous andesites and volcanoclastic sediments of the Dolokapa Formation. During middle to upper Miocene time the Bilungala Volcanics were invaded by large masses of predominantly dioritic intrusive rock and it is within one of these dioritic intrusive complexes, the Bone Diorite, that the cluster of porphyry copper systems occurs. Renewed volcanic activity in the Plio-Pleistocene produced acid pyroclastic rocks (the Pinogu Volcanicsi whose distribution is controlled by present-day topography. Structural trends, largely interpreted from SLR imagery, are pre- dominantly NW or NIWJ. The right-lateral Gorontalo Fault, which trends hW through the town of Gorontalo (Katili, 19691 is the most prominent structural feature. Many of the major structures in the Tapadaa district have similar orientations and may be sympathetically related to the Gorontalo Fault.

The increasing cost of developing new mines and the need to mine more marginal deposits have led mining companies to use more sophisticated estimation methods such as kriging. But until recently, coal mining companies have shown little or no interest in these techniques. However, the stringent quality controls which are now placed on coal have led to a surge in interest in improved estimation methods. This can be seen from the -, number of research projects by private companies and governmental agencies on the application of geostatistics to coal reserve estimation. At present, most of these programs are centered on the problem of estimating the tonnage and the average grade (i.e. ash percent, sulphur content, calorific value, etc.) of the coal in-situ. See, for example, Sabourin (1975), Woods (1976, 1979), Pauncz and Nixon (1979) and Armstrong (1980). These studies show that the established techniques of linear geostatistics can be applied successfully to coal deposits. The study by Woods is particularly interesting because he had access to the actual production figures as well as the initial sample data from the no 2 seam in the Greenside Colliery owned by the Anglo-American Corporation. He showed that the estimates obtained by kriging were consistently closer to the actual production figures than those given by three other estimation methods. This confirms the superiority of kriging as a method of estimating block values for coal. Another advantage of geostatistics is that it can be used to determine the optimal spacing between drill holes. An example of this is given by Armstrong for the coking coal deposit in the Bowen Basin, Australia.

The peatlands of the U.S. and Canadian parts of the Upper Great Lakes region have a long history of modest utilization in agriculture, forestry, horticulture, and as natural undisturbed areas. Only recently have they been assessed as potential sources of non-renewable or renewable energy. This new interest in peatlands, should current proposals be realized, might mean the commitment of millions of acres to energy production purposes. The magnitude alone of this potential utilization of peatland signals the possibility of substantial environmental disturbance, local resource shortages, resource use conflicts, and social and economic change. Peat- land resource managers in the region are just beginning to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of large-scale peatland utilization. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has made a considerable effort to study peat resource management issues and will shortly make recommendations to the state legislature regarding utilization alternatives. What follows is a general discussion of peatland utilization and management trends in the region with a focus on Minnesota and its peatland management efforts.

The paper generally reviews the iron ore occurrences and regional geology of Western Australia, but features in particular the mesa deposits of PJasic Materials - Cliffs International. Initial production is planned from a aeries of mesa deposits of Eocene-Oligocene age. The ore is oölitic to pisolitic goethite and hematite. Source of the iron in the mesa deposits is thought to be from the Precambrian iron-formations. The geology and occurrences of the mesa iron ore deposits are summarized and illustrated.

Energy costs have had a serious impact on all basic industries today. This is due to the significant amount of energy that is used to convert natural resources into usable products. Other factors such as transportation with its major energy requirement and materials employed in processing that have already required significant energy input for their manufacture accordingly influence delivered cost to the user. The farmer is a good example of this. While his large capital investment for land, machines, and buildings is highly impacted by today's interest rates, his chemical fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides as well as those same machines and transportation costs for his products have also been seriously affected by energy costs. With the many unit operations involved in mining and mineral processing, several of which require significant inputs of energy, one can only conclude that this industry has experienced a great increase in percentage of total cost for energy alone. Fuerstenau (1975) indicated that the minerals industry used about 12.5% of the total energy produced in the US. McNulty (1983) listed the total energy requirements for the production of 0.9 t (1 st) of various metals including the energy consumed in the manufacture of supplies employed, such as tires, explosives, chemicals, grinding media, etc. (Table 1).

INTRODUCTION During the last decade, several studies in France (e.g., Perraud et al. , 1970; Chameaud et al., 1974, 1979 and 1980) and the United States (e.g., Stuart et al., 1978; Cross et al., 1978, 1980 and 1981) have demonstrated the systematic production of emphysema, fibrosis and tumors in the lungs of animals exposed to radon daughters alone or to mixtures of uranium-mine air contaminants. The studies in beagle dogs have been particularly interesting because of the uncertain etiology of the disease and the (apparently) diverse results of the studies at the University of Rochester and the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL). In the Rochester studies, reported by Morken (1973), beagle dogs were exposed to "normal" room air dust loads and radon daughters from 200 to 10,000 WLM*, delivered in 1 to 50 days (rate of delivery, about 200 WLM per day of exposure). Histological examination of tissues was conducted at 1, 2 and 3 years after exposure for all exposure levels. No cancers were noted in these dogs that received estimated alveolar doses of 34 to 1700 rad (0.34 to 17 Gy). Pathologic changes were found only in the alveolar and bronchiolar regions of the lung. These changes were small, subtle, variable, and widely separated, involving only a very small fraction of lung tissue. Lesions appeared as focal thickening of alveolar septa, with some metaplasia of alveolar cells and some hyperplasia of bronchial epithelium. In the PNL experiments reported by Cross et al. (1978), beagle dogs were exposed in lifespan studies to mixtures of radon daughters (rate of delivery, about 14 WLM per day of exposure), uranium ore dust and cigarette smoke. One group of dogs was exposed to cigarette smoke alone. Except in control and smoke-only groups, the dogs died within 4' years of the first radon daughter exposure, or were killed when death appeared imminent because of pulmonary insufficiency (characterized by rapid, shallow breathing). Control and smoke-only animals were killed at periods corresponding to highmortality periods in the groups exposed to radon daughters and mixtures of uranium ore dust and cigarette smoke. Emphysema and fibrosis were much more prevalent and severe in the lungs of dogs exposed to the mixtures. These dogs also had adenomatous lesions, which progressed to squamous metaplasia of alveolar epithelium, epidermoid carcinoma and bronchioloalveolar carcinoma. Pathologic changes in the upper airways of these dogs were most prominent in the nasal mucosa, and included a few squamous carcinomas in the nasal cavity. Respiratory tract neoplasia was noted after ~4 years exposure and at cumulative exposures exceeding approximately 12,000 WLM. Apart from differences in associated carrier aerosol (room air dust vs. uranium ore dust) and radon-daughter exposure rate (200 WLM/day, shortduration exposure vs. 14 WLM/day, long-duration exposure), the most obvious difference in the Rochester and PNL studies was the observation time following exposure (3 years maximum vs. >4 years). Although neoplasia may not have been observed in the Rochester animals because of the earlier termination of the experiments, it is surprising that other lesions, such as prominent fibrosis and emphysema, were not reported. A follow-up study (reported here) is currently in progress at PNL to determine the pathogenic role of uranium ore dust alone and, in particular, to clarify the role of the ore dust in the production of the massive pulmonary fibrosis observed in the earlier study. Pulmonary function testing (a recently acquired capability) was included in the follow-up study as an indicator of progressive change in lung tissue. MATERIALS AND METHODS Chronic (4 hr/day, 5 days/week) exposures began when the dogs were about 2 1/2 years old. Two identical exposure chambers provided space for simultaneous, head-only exposure of 24 dogs to ~l5 mg/m3 carnotite uranium ore dust. An aerosol diffusion system was incorporated in each chamber in order to channel fresh aerosol past each dog's head; uranium ore dust was added to the inlet room air with Wright Dust Feed Mechanisms* (WDFM). Uranium ore dust and condensation nuclei concentrations were measured daily; chamber aerosols were monitored occasionally for particle-size distributions as described for previous hamster experiments (Cross et al., 1981). This report refers to the Chicago Deep Tunnel Contract 13A, which was the first contract let in the City of Chicago requiring the construction of deep drop shafts for the transportation of high level sewage to the deep tunnel system. The basic contract required the contractor to construct certain drop shafts designed to deliver surface and high level sewage to the deep tunnel system approximately two hundred feet below. The design of the drop shafts was in a degree affected by their proximity to the existing deep tunnel. The tunnel, approximately three and one-half miles long, was to have five shafts dropping sewage at five locations. Four of the drops were approximately one-half mile apart and spaced from the dead end of the tunnel. One shaft divided the remaining two miles from the existing work shaft at the southeast end of the tunnel wherein a 220' deep pumping station was to be built. The existing tunnel had been built some time previously and all dewatering had stopped, allowing the tunnel and main shaft to fill with water. According to the plans, the drop shafts were all between fifty and ninety feet north or south of tunnel center line, and located in heavily built-up residential and industrial property. This then defines the problems: How do we control the water. If we excavate from the top down, how do we handle the slurry and the muck from five locations. INTRODUCTION The Wyodak Mine is located in the northern Powder River Basin of Wyoming and is thought to be the oldest continuously operating coal mine in the United States, having recorded yearly production since 1923. The mine has expanded over its 80-plus-year history from an underground room and pillar operation to a modem surface snip mine. Currently, the mine feeds four on-site power plants using conveyors, has a filly automated truck load-out, and ships coal by rail to nearby Wyoming power plants. Annual production of 4.8 MTFT is accomplished on a single-shift basis with 53 fill-time production, maintenance and administrative personnel. In 1990 a decision was made to modernize the coal feed system to the power plant complex with modular conveying equipment. The project involved constructing coal storage silos, overland conveyors, feeder breakers and modular conveyors to follow the mining benches. Total project cost in excess of $25 million was used to construe or commission: A 2,150-TPH 48-inch overland conveyor with horizontal curve A 2,150-TPH 48-inch plant feed conveyor 13 shuttle conveyors, each 150 feet in length 2 front-end loaders equipped with large coal buckets 2 crawler-mounted feeder breakers with compatible discharge conveyor 1 high-lift shuttle conveyor with adjustable discharge height 1 high-angle conveyor 2 4,500-ton coal silos with automated truck load- out capabilities. Conceptually, the plan was to develop 33 MTONS of reserve adjacent to the plant complex and use front-end loaders to tram ROM coal to in-pit feeder breakers. The primary crushing would reduce coal to 6-inch minus and feed through a series of shuttle conveyors to an overland supply conveyor. The overland conveyor would feed the secondary crusher, and the crushed product would be moved to any of four storage silos using conveyors. The in-pit crushing and conveying system is a unique fit for the power plants and provided many interesting challenges for the coal mine to overcome. System integration, maintenance windows, equipment availability and the like had a major role in engineering the system to a power plant complex having no emergency coal stock- pile and limited plant storage. In crediting the designers and operators, the in-pit conveying system at the Wyodak Mine has delivered coal to the power generators since 1994 with little or no downtime. ENGINEERING CONSIDERATIONS Yearly production for the mine is based on 3.5 MTPY which requires about 1,550 TPH on an 8 hour, one-shift- per-day, 5-days-per-week basis. Considering efficiencies for starting and stopping, crew transport, loader trams, and operational delays, a nominal conveyor feed rate of 2,150 TPH or 72% system utilization was used in engineering design application. This ton-per-hour basis is used to size and commission the remaining components of the in-pit system. Coal quality requirements also played a role in equipment selection. The mine reserve grades vertically and coal from Upper and Lower benches needed to be mixed in any given proportion. This required equipment to be filly variable and capable of producing all or part of the 2,150-ton-per-hour requirement. Bisecting the 80-foot- high coal face for quality required construction of a high lift module capable of reaching a single overland conveyor 40 to 50 feet above the pit floor. Overview In 1992, US coal supply and demand were shaped more by weather conditions and the export market than by the economic recovery. Preliminary data compiled by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) (Table I) show that coal production declined slightly to 902 Mt (994 million st). Consumption, though, rose by about 1 % to 811 Mt (894 million st), trailing the 2.1 %growth in Gross Domestic Product. Contributing to the decrease were a sizable drop in coal exports and some coal stock withdrawals. Consumption increased largely because electric utilities turned to coal to offset a shortfall in hydroelectric generation caused by a drought in the Northwest. Apart from this, the demand for coal-fired generation was dampened by a mild winter in the northwestern and northcentral United States, and a cool summer in the central and eastern parts of the Nation. Coal use by other consumers was about the same as in 1991. The average delivered prices of coal to all consuming sectors decreased slightly in 1992, reflecting soft coal markets (Fig. 1). US coal exporters experienced a set-back in 1992 mostly because of losses in the European market. Total coal exports fell by 6% to 93 Mt (103 million st), the first decline since 1987. Coal stockpiles at the end of 1992 were about 1.8 Mt (2 million st) below 1991, despite stock buildups by some electric utilities in the East. Stocks were built up as a hedge against possible coal miners' strikes after the Feb. 1, 1993, expiration of the contract between the United Mine Workers of America and the Bituminous Coal Operators' Association.
