Fred C. Bond is recognized throughout the mineral processing world as the father of comminution equipment applied science and engineering. The Bond Work Index became a universal standard, and is the most widely used measurement tool for comminution energy consumption. This biography is the story of his lifetime of study, work experiences, experimentation, analyses and findings. His numerous published writings are reviewed. His legacy is one of comminution process engineering that will be used in perpetuity.

The Toulon South Tunnel in France is the second part of a project started 20 years ago. After the problems and delays suffered during the construction of the North Tunnel, due to a complex geologic context of highly fractured and soft rocks under a highly urbanized environment, a very dense automatic monitoring system was implemented to control the settlements of surface (more than 1000 points), the structures adjacent to the tunnel alignment and the underground galleries being constructed. The latest automatic instrumentation systems were installed, using for example AMTS capabilities in terms of ?automatic prismless settlement monitoring?. All the data (geotechnical, structural and geological) was gathered in a global automatic data acquisition system and continuously available on a web based interface. Three different threshold levels (notification, anomaly, alert) were set up, each one with a differential and an absolute value for settlements. Depending on the actual geological site conditions and the actual monitored settlements, different supporting systems and excavation techniques were used. Furthermore, the monitoring data was also used to predict and anticipate the future settlement, by comparing it continuously with the theoretical Peck settlement curves. This method allowed a better risk management by limiting the settlement on existing structures and helped to secure the Works progress schedule, for a project that lasts from July 2007 to March 2011. The implementation of this observational method application is presented in this paper.

A load rating procedure was performed to evaluate safe load capacity of the Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT), FDOT Tunnel No. 871071 SR 887. The rating procedure performed on a total of eleven stations beneath roadways and with fill depth less than the tunnel exterior diameter (42 ft). Calculations on tunnel sections passing beneath roadways were performed to evaluate the structural response of the sections subject to moving vehicular loads, dead load, and earth pressures. Ratings were performed in accordance with AASHTO and FDOT guidelines. The procedure considered two types of vehicles (HL-93 and FL-120) and two rating levels (Design level and Permit level). As part of HL-93 vehicle, Tandem load was also considered for rating, separately. For HL-93 and HL-93 Tandem, inventory and operating level ratings were performed. The results show rating factors are high. The minimum rating factor is 16.8 using Inventory truck HL-93. For Permit level using FDOT FL-120 truck the minimum rating factor is 6.9. As can be seen, rating factors are higher than comparable analysis for bridges. This paper explains how the procedure can be implemented for tunnels and evaluates the rating results.

Over the past few decades a great deal of effort has gone into characterizing the effects of frother type and concentration in flotation using a variety of two-phase techniques. Whilst useful and informative, this research still does not assist in the selection of suitable frothers for three-phase industrial-scale froths. This paper investigates the effects of frother type and concentration in a three-phase industrial froth. The objective was to determine if progress could be made in terms of understanding the behavior of frothers in flotation and understanding how they affect the sub-processes occurring in the pulp and froth phases and, ultimately, the metallurgical performance of a flotation cell.

The liberation of intimately disseminated impurities from the coal matrix often demands that the material be ground to a high degree of fineness. Similarly, some technologies for coal utilization require superfine particles (i.e., sizes less than ten microns). This implies additional costs for coal preparation plants due to the high energy and media costs associated with fine grinding operations. Besides, there are problems such as sever product contaminations due to media wear and impairment of the quality of coal. Hence, proper choice of grinding media type is important from the viewpoints of cost reduction and product quality.

Lost foam casting patterns are foamed polystyrene shapes glued together into the shape of the part to be cast and are coated with a refractory material consisting of a mineral mixture and binders. Prior to casting, a significant number of the patterns are damaged and inevitably land-filled. In this study, a process is developed for the recovery of foamed polystyrene from the coating and glue contaminants. The process consists of shredding, impact comminution, size classification and density separation. It is successful in separating up to 97% of the contaminants, while recovering 95% of the polystyrene.

Introduction A subject long debated but rarely resolved involves the interaction between the academic community and industry in the sponsorship and conduct of research. The subject is, unfortunately, too often treated as a controversy involving ethics and the profit motive. But, in fact, the two branches of society - industry and academia - are necessarily part of the same system. In the last 25 years, the realization has developed that research alone is not sufficient to bring about use of those results to benefit society through productivity gains and economic growth. The flow of events shown in Fig. 1 was generally believed to be the steps required for reaping the benefits of research. Today, research still has the very important role of creating new information or new ideas. However, it is recognized to be but one of many steps in a process that we now refer to as technological innovation. Charpie (1967) said, "Technological innovation is the driving force behind economic growth in the US. In this context, innovation means the process by which a new idea is successfully translated into economic impact within our own society, by providing better products, and simultaneously creating new jobs in the manufacturing of those products. Only after an investigation is put into sufficient use to have an economic effect, is it termed an innovation." One of the best depictions of the technological innovation process is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. These are adapted from Haeffner (1975), and modified by the Committee on Mineral Technology of the National Research Council (1981). Figure 2 identifies the many steps involved in the process. It designates a generalized form for interaction between the academic community and industry. Figure 3 identifies the steps in the "innovation activity" box of Fig. 2. Academia is generally responsible for developing of new knowledge and ideas, as well as maintaining and enlarging the collected body of scientific knowledge. Industry is responsible for developing new products, methods, and processes. Both institutions operate for the benefit of society, but under different driving forces. The Biwabik Iron Formation is a ~1.9 billion year-old sequence of iron-rich sedimentary rocks that was metamorphosed at its eastern- most extent by ~1.1 billion year-old intrusions of the Duluth Complex. The metamorphic recrystallization of iron-formation locally produced iron-rich amphiboles and other fibrous iron-silicate minerals. The presence of these minerals in iron-formation along the eastern part of what is known as the Mesabi Iron Range, and their potential liberation by iron mining has raised environmental health concerns. We describe here the geologic setting and mineralogic composition of the Biwabik Iron Formation in and adjacent to the contact metamorphic aureole of the Duluth Complex. The effects of metamorphism are most pronounced within a few kilometers of the contact, and decrease progressively away from it. The contact aureole has been divided into four metamorphic zones?each characterized by the composition and crystal structure of the metamorphic minerals it contains. The recrystallization of iron-formation to iron-rich amphibole minerals (grunerite and cummingtonite) and iron-pyroxene minerals (hedenbergite and ferrohypersthene) is best developed in zones that are most proximal to the Duluth Complex contact. ©2007 Elsevier Inc. The 5 km (16,194 lf) of 6.1m (20 ft) diameter TBM driven tunnel built by the J.F.Shea Co. will serve as sewage overflow storage. The TBM tunnel and four connecting tunnels excavated by drill and blast methods in hard granite will remain unlined. Based on the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR), the Contract documents provided a design with no required pattern of rock bolts, no probing, no pre-excavation or consolidation grouting, and lastly, no final lining of the tunnels was deemed necessary. This paper will provide a general overview of these topics with the emphasis on the actual ground conditions encountered versus the projected conditions provided in the GBR and how the GBR reflected the design of the project. Proposed modifications to the temporary and permanent ground support will be presented and the necessity of probing and pre-excavation grouting will be evaluated.

The El Sauzal gold-silver deposit is a high-sulfidation, epithermal precious-metals deposit hosted by an east-dipping sequence of dacitic and rhyolitic pyroclastic and debris-flow units of probable Oligocene age. Total gold production since startup in late 2004 is approximately 450,000 oz. of gold. Above the sulfide boundary gold is mainly disseminated as small grains interstitial to alunite, kaolinite and quartz. The majority of the ore is found in quartz-alunite-kaolinite altered rock that mantles tabular to irregular silicic cores of vuggy, residual quartz ±kaolinite ±dickite. Grade domains are modelled as subhorizontal to east and southeast-dipping. Higher-grade domains cut across alteration zones and also coincide with transitions from vuggy quartz to quartz-alunite-kaolinite. The highest grades are commonly found marginal to vuggy quartz in transitional, hematite-rich quartz-kaolinite and quartz-alunite-kaolinite rock.

Following on from many years of research aimed at improving the effectiveness of truck haulage operations in mines operated by BHP Minerals, BHP Research developed a concept for an Innovative Large Mining Truck, (ILMT) which has the potential to significantly improve the cost effectiveness of rear dump mining trucks. The ILMT concept reduces the empty vehicle weight dramatically, greatly reduces unequal rear tyre loading and improves ride and handling characteristics. The concept has been taken to the "proof of concept" prototype truck stage with the cooperative efforts of BHP Coal, BHP Research. Liebherr Mining Truck, Inc., Liebherr-Australia and Birrana Engineering. Testing of the prototype truck commenced at a coal mine in Queensland, Australia during May, 1996. Preliminary results from the testing program are very encouraging. Expectations are being met and in some cases exceeded.

Reflected light microscopy was used to study the mineralogy and textures of experimental reactions of a nickel concentrate with a slag. Such an interaction is an important step in the bath smelting of nickel sulfide concentrate. Concentrate particles in the central portions of the pellets are rounded and develop vermicular SO2 gas porosity. In the outer portions of the pellets, the original minerals of the concentrate, pyrrhotite, pentlandite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and violarite have agglomerated and reacted to form two intergrown phases: 1) pyrrhotite solid solution (Fe0.75Ni0.18Cu0.01S) and pentlandite solid solution (Fe0.58Ni0.51Cu0.03S). Magnetite formed euhedral crystals, skeletal crystals, and dendrites at the margins of the matte. Prismatic ferrohypersthene and octahedral Mg-Al-Fe spinel crystals and dendrites are present in the glassy slag.

In 2005, CANMET-MMSL used its pool of expertise in ground control, open pit and underground mine engineering, mineral processing, information technology and applied mineralogy to launch a mine-to-mill research project. The objective of the project was to optimize the distribution of rock breakage energy among blasting, crushing and grinding activities, thereby maximizing the efficiency of energy utilization within comminution processes. Tests were designed to demonstrate that this approach could reduce energy consumption, thus contributing to the reduction of green house gas (GHG) production in the Canadian mining industry. The project was accomplished in collaboration with DynoConsult and Dyno Nobel Canada Inc., a world leader in commercial explosives. Data analysis from 12 blasts (six with electronic and six with pyrotechnic detonators) in three different geological formations of a quarry (soft, medium and hard rock) shows that electronic blasting technology increases rock fragmentation by 15% (in hard rock) to 20% (in soft rock). A more uniform rock fragment size distribution is also obtained. The impact of the improved quality blast product on downstream processes of the quarry is a productivity increase of 5% in rock excavation and transportation, an energy reduction of 10% at the primary crusher and an increase of 15% of the primary crusher throughput. Extended to the Canadian mining industry, such results would represent a GHG emission reduction of about 0.05 Mt/y. A soft-sensor prototype, based on primary crusher data (i.e., energy consumption, throughput, feed and product size distribution) and a simplified computerized process model, was developed for on-line measurement of the rock operating work index. Additionally, 385 rock samples and specimens were collected and prepared to determine the tensile and compressive strength of the rock material, to evaluate the aggregate crushing work index and to examine the development of micro- and macro-fractures by means of binocular and SEM microscopy. Blast-induced rock damage was evaluated at the end of the laboratory-testing program. Even though a reduction of rock hardness of around 30% was observed after blasting, the impact of the blasting method (i.e., use of electronic or pyrotechnic detonators) on the induced rock damage could not be observed. It is either absent or not perceptible with the accuracy of the measuring techniques and the number of samples analyzed.

This paper describes work done by Placer Dome Technical Services Limited, a subsidiary of Barrick Gold, and Nautilus Minerals Inc. in support of the conceptual design of a subsea mining system. It describes an overall concept design plus specific studies into mechanical excavation at depth. The concept design includes one or more subsea excavators connected to a suction riser, which transports the cut material to a shipboard dewatering and offloading system. A multi-phase investigation was performed into the mechanical excavation of seafloor massive sulphides at depths of around 1600m. Rock samples were recovered and tested for rock properties and cutting behaviour. A small pick drum cutter was procured and tested on a representative concrete slab in a lab and tested again while submerged in a test tank. Finally the cutter was tested on a massive sulphide ore body at 1600m depth. The cutting performance results, e.g. pick forces and specific energies, should provide valuable input to the design of future full scale subsea mining systems.

Lifelines in seismic regions of the world seldom can escape crossing active faults. Cities in California have been mitigating this risk by constructing improved fault crossings. This paper discusses the analyses and design of the lining for a tunnel carrying a water conveyance pipeline through a fault that can potentially displace during a major earthquake event. The paper presents expected fault displacement, fault width and orientation respective to the tunnel, characterization of the ground surrounding the tunnel and its interaction with the lining, and performance required of the lining. Several other fault crossings will also be presented and discussed

When assessing the safety of a tailings dam, the constant weight method (CWM) is one of the most commonly used methods. However, when the evaluation indicator value suggests serious defects, the evaluation value is often inconsistent with the actual situation. To address this issue, the variable weight method (VWM) is introduced to assess the safety of the tailings dam. Initially, a three-layer indicator system for dam failure safety assessment is built, and individual indicator values are divided into four grades. Then, an appropriate state variable weight function is constructed and relevant parameters are determined. Finally, a case study is illustrated to verify the effectiveness of the model. The assessment results of the VWM more closely represent the actual situation than that of the CWM, which is more helpful for decision makers and technicians to take scientific and reasonable precautionary measures, thereby improving the safety management of the tailings pond.

The structural design of a mine haul road involves the determination of cover thickness requirements above the in-situ or sub-grade material. The specification of these layerworks is a critical component in the overall road design process. Poor design often leads to premature failure of the road, safety is often compromised and productivity and equipment service-life will certainly decrease. Historically, the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) cover-curve design method has been widely applied to the structural design of mine haul roads. More recently, established mechanistic design principles have superceded the CBR approach to haul road design, using a multi-layer model to represent the various road structural layers. The structural design and associated layer thickness requirements are then determined following a maximum strain criterion. This paper develops a case-study evaluation of the CBR cover-curve and mechanistic design methodologies and through a comparative analysis of layerworks and materials, highlights how improved structural design can be achieved mechanistically.

Refractory gold ores are those from which a significant percentage of the gold cannot be recovered by conventional cyanidation. Historically, roasting has been the primary method for rendering such ores amenable to gold extraction; however, roasting creates environmental problems that are not acceptable in many locations. During the 1980s, consistently strong gold prices drew increasing attention to refractory gold ores, and new processing schemes were commercialized, most prominently aqueous pressure oxidation and more recently bacterial oxidation. Since 1985, pressure oxidation has been incorporated into four plants processing refractory gold ores. A fifth plant is scheduled for start-up in early 1990, and three additional plants are scheduled for production before late 1992. A technical session on treatment of refractory ores was included in the program of `World Gold '89, a Gold Forum on Technology and Practices' held by SME and the AusIMM in Reno, NV, Nov. 5-8, 1989. This article summarizes material from five of the papers presented during the refractory gold session and published in the proceedings of `World Gold '89,' edited by Roshan Bhappu and Rod Harden. The Epping to Chatswood Rail Line project is the largest publicly funded infrastructure project in New South Wales. Construction commenced in November2002 with opening scheduled for 2008. The work includes 13 route km of twin TBM driven 7.2 m diameter lined running tunnel, three cross-overs and three new underground stations. The new stations have platform caverns of 20m span with similarly proportioned concourse caverns alongside. The ground is bedded sand stone and shale with high horizontal stresses. Predicted stress-relief induced ground movements during staged excavation led to innovative use of rock anchors for permanent support.
