Of the variables affecting the electrical properties of coal measure rocks, water content is by far the most important, This paper describes specially developed apparatus and methods of measuring electrical conductivity and permittivity at constant humidity conditions. Electrical properties variations were measured for Applachian and Illinois, U.S.A. coal 2 basin samples in the frequency range 2 X 10 to 2 X 10 Hz. Coal measure rock electrical behavior, when correlated with mechanical behavior, is potentially useful in a number of mining applications.

Phosphate is one of the most important minerals in our world today. It contains the life-giving element of phosphorus, which is essential to the growth of every living cell in plant, animal, and man. This vital mineral is found in twenty-three states of the United States; however, for more than 70 years, Florida has led the nation in phosphate-production and now produces 70% of the requirements of this country. Since the early 1880% when rich phosphate deposits were accidentally discovered in a river-bed in Central Florida, the industry has developed into a multi-million-dollar operation. Phosphate mining began in Florida in 1887 with very crude methods and equipment. The original process was necessarily slow and tedious, resulting in total production of 3000 tons in 1888. Progress was made in improved mining operations, and by 1894. Florida had grabbed the lead as the nation?s largest phosphate-producing area, and is still in the top position.

A field project to develop and demonstrate a method for alleviating problems of highly-mineralized ground water where they occur as isolated zones or pockets in fresh-water aquifers is being conducted in the Ogallala Aquifer of eastern New Mexico by the Robert S. Kerr Water Research Center. Removal of contaminated water is by a large-capacity well and the pumped poor-quality water is used locally for secondary recovery of oil, Benefits of the operation are threefold in that the aquifer is being reclaimed for future fresh water production, contaminated water is being used beneficially, and fresh water which otherwise would have been used for waterflooding is available for other purposes. Ground-water quality in the site has improved markedly after 21 months of operation. Water quality in 15 specially-drilled monitoring wells has returned to the original quality level of the aquifer, and chloride concen¬trations in the pumping well have dropped to half the maximum level recorded thus far. Project results are very favorable and provide guidelines for initiation of similar undertakings in localities where needed.

In a recently completed research project for the U.S. Bureau of Mines - Twin Cities Research Center, a computerized costing procedure for uranium in situ leach mining was developed by the NUS Corporation. This costing procedure, termed a cost model, employs a process engineering approach for estimating total project costs as well as equipment and manpower requirements for uranium in situ leaching operations in either Texas or Wyoming. 80th capital and operating costs are generated by the model along with the overall production cost/pound U3O8 subject to a known rate of return. Conversely, rate of return on equity can be solved for, subject to a given price of yellowcake. During the course of the research effort, this cost model was applied 50 typical site conditions in Texas and Wyoming. Sensitivity rests were conducted for numerous key parameters to determine the cost influence attributable to incremental changes In parameter values. The results of these sensitivity tests along with a description of the in situ leaching cost model have been documented as Bureau of Mines, Mineral Research Contract Report No. J019912, "Cost and Sensitivities Analysis for Uranium In Situ Leach Mining," dated March 1981.

It is generally accepted, that oxygen is a necessary reagent for the flotation of galena with xanthate. Recent measurements have shown (1) that under plant conditions oxygen may be in a short supply to the extent that it limits the rate of flotation. Thus, it becomes important to define the exact role of oxygen and establish a model for the rational design and control of flotation separations, involving oxygen as a reagent. All theories or, the flotation of galena assign oxygen the role of an oxidant. However, they disagree on a number of questions: 1) Is the galena or the xanthate being oxidized? 2) Is a lead dixanthate or dixanthogen the actual collector? 3) Is the oxidation process in which oxygen participates of a chemical or an electrochemical nature? The last question arises from the observation (2) that an anodic bias as well as oxygen will make a galena surface hydrophobic in the presence of xanthate. Theories which are based an the premise that the influence of oxygen is of an electrochemical nature offer elegant models of galena flotation. However, full advantage has not been taken of available electrochemical techniques to discriminate between theories and this is the area towards which this research has been directed (3).

It is well known in both the research field and in commercial flotation processes that the grades and recoveries obtained from flotation plants are heavily influenced by the structure and height of the froths produced in the flotation cells. The development of steady-state mathematical models of flotation processes based upon practical and readily obtained parameters have demanded detailed information about the structure of flotation froths. The important parameters are the distribution of floating values, gangue and water in the froth with respect to froth height, cell pulp density, cell air flow rates and flotation inducing additives. Little work has been conducted in this field although considerable attention has been paid to bubble loading and other factors close to the cell froth/pulp interface. Laboratory batch tests are prefaced for the derivation of the above mentioned parameters for both practical and economic reasons. The standard laboratory flotation tests using a batch cell produces a froth of low height (1 to 3 cms generally) together with a varying cell pulp density as the test progresses due to the addition of top up water and the removal of froth from the cell. This form of test can be considered only as giving information about froth conditions close to the cell froth/pulp interface under conditions of widely varying cell pulp densities. In commercial processes the froth heights are much larger (frequently greater than 10 cms); therefore the laboratory batch test, although useful in many ways, does not directly yield parameters relating the state of the froth flowing over the cell lip to process operating conditions. To investigate flotation conditions, where more realistic froth heights are developed, an equilibrium type of batch cell has been developed at Warren Spring 1 Laboratory . An investigation was performed to determine conditions which optimize fracture formation between blastholes used for purposes of pre-splitting. Experiments-involved high-speed photography in Plexiglas models and radiographs in sandstone models. Additionail data was obtained from full-scale pre-split blasts. Pre-split fractures between blastholes were found to form as a result of gas pressure and were affected little, if any, by stress wave interactions. Pre-splitting was effective with short period delays of 25 milliseconds or less, and did not require instantaneous initiation of blastholes. The idea of using only one strand for both sintering and cooling of the sinter is not new. In 1952, in the U.S.A. a sintering plant was built at Benson Mine (Star Lake, N.Y.), including : - 68 m2 or 735 sqft (8 wind boxes) for sintering, - 22 m2 or 237 sqft (3 wind boxes) for cooling. In the USSR, a large number of machines have been built allowing for cooling of the sinter on the strand, especially the 4 m (about 13 ft) machines, with : 252 m2 sintering grate area 60 m2 cooling grate area 312 m2 total grate area. However, such ventures did not prove very successful, and the IRSID embarked many years ago on a research program to discover : - what are the problems associated with cooling on a sintering strand ; - what are the possible solutions for industrial plants.

Dimethylglyoxime reacts with nickel in a buffered ammonical-citrate solution containing the detergent ?Aquet? and hyroxylamine-hydrochloride. The resulting nickelous dimethylglyoxime is extracted with xylene. Visual comparison with standards permits the estimation of from 50 to 10,000 ppm of nickel. Soil, rock, or sediment may be decomposed by digestion with (1-3) nitric acid, allowing about 70 determinations per man-day to be carried out. With minor modifications to the above procedure, sediment and soil may be semi-quantitatively analyzed for nickel at the sample site. The chemical equipment is easily portable and the analysis extremely rapid because the buffer, dime thylglyoxime and xylene are added simultaneously to the sample and no heating is required. The sensitivity varies with the "availability" of the nickel ions; under favorable conditions, one may obtain a positive test for as little as 10 micrograms in soils and sediments. This procedure is similar to one, for the field determination of heavy metals described elsewhere by the author.

Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited, one of the world's largest iron ore producers, operates a 3.0 million tonne per year pelletizing facility at Dampier in Western Australia. The plant produces pellets for the export market using a blend of natural hematite fines from the Company's two mines at Tom Price and Paraburdoo. Processing includes fluidised-bed drying of the ore feed, open circuit dry grinding, disc balling and pellet induration in a travelling grate furnace of Dravo-Lurgi design.

My subject Is Industrial Relations. Thus, I may appear as an intruder at this annual meeting of the Society of Mining Engineers. But I am no more an intruder here than is Industrial Relations in the day-to-day functioning of an engineer either in a staff or a line job. Engineers deal with people, as well as with blueprints, organizational charts, production data, etc. Where you have people, you have emotions, gripes, wants - real or imagined. Or you may just need some people or, at the other end of the pole, you may want to free yourself of people. But whether it is the wants or the needs, the pleasant or the unpleasant aspects of dealing with people, an Industrial Relations Department within an organization is there to help with these human relationships. This is the point for a definition of terns. Reference has just been made to "dealing with people? and to "human relations." This is, precisely the area in which Industrial Relations operates in the western Mining Divisions of Kennecott. In other organizations, what we refer to as Industrial Relations, may be called personnel relations, personnel administration, employee relations, or labor management relations. In our opinion the term Industrial Relations is best descriptive of the activity because it embraces the broad field of human behavior, reactions and satisfactions growing out of an individual?s entire employment relationship including his hiring, his lifetime on the job, and his termination. This is an individual?s industrial life. However, despite the use of the word "industrial", we are ever conscious that Industrial Relations is limited to human relations. Operational activities and decisions relating to the mining, milling, smelting and refining processes are for the line organization. The Industrial Relations interest in these line organizations activities and decisions relates only to the impact they nay have on employees - on people generally within the organization.

The National Steel Pellet Project and the Butler Taconite Project are operated by The Hanna Mining Company in the vicinity of the towns of Keewatin and Nashwauk, on the western Mesabi Range. Production began in 1967, after seven years of exploratory and development diamond drilling and reconnaissance magnetic surveys, Previously, direct shipping hematitegoethite ores and gravity concentrates had been produced in the area from numerous open pits and several underground mines since the start of the century. Total shipments of these oxidized ores amounted to more than 200 million tons, but at the present time such reserves are nearly exhausted, and there are no mining operations in the Keewatin-Nashwauk area except at the two taconite projects. The locations of all of the present taconite operations on the Mesabi Range are shown in Figure 1, extending for a distance of about seventy miles from the Butler plant to the Dunka River area. The Butler and National plants have a combined rated capacity of 4.4 million tons of pellets. Their reserves cover a combined strike length of about eight miles on the Biwabik iron formation. All of the intervals between present taconite operations on the Mesabi are potential sources of additional magnetic taconite; in particular, exploration and economic studies have been carried out by Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation in the Biwabik area between Aurora and Virginia, and by Pickands Mather and Company in the Hibbing area. However, west of the Henna and Butler holdings, it appears unlikely that magnetic taconite exists in commerical quantities at economic depths due to extensive oxidation of magnetite to hematite.

The two primary goals in underground coal mining are to improve safety and to lower mining costs per ton through increased productivity. However, as evidenced by the drastic decrease in. productivity since the enactment of the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, (the Safety Act), these goals appear to be mutually exclusive. Millions of dollars have been spent in the res, arch and development of systems to solve this problem. Before the Safety Act, "productivity had experienced a 25-year history of continued increases ...? (Douglas, 1980). But since its enactment there have been dramatic decreases in productivity accompanied by phenomenal increases in mine costs. Labor trends, depletion of the more readily minable underground coal reserves and other factors have contributed to this situation, but the dominant factor is undoubtedly the Safety Act itself. To illustrate, prior to 1969 underground coal mine production was much greater than surface mine production but since then underground mine production has been declining at a rate greater than the overall growth rate of total coal production.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently developed a series of validated models utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study the effects of air-blocking shelves on airflows and respirable dust distribution associated with mediumsized surface blasthole drill shrouds as part of a dry dust collector system. Using validated CFD models, three different air-blocking shelves were included in the present study: a 15.2-cm (6-in.)-wide shelf; a 7.6-cm (3-in.)-wide shelf; and a 7.6-cm (3-in.)-wide shelf at four different shelf heights. In addition, the dust-collector-to-bailing airflow ratios of 1.75:1, 1.5:1, 1.25:1 and 1:1 were evaluated for the 15.2-cm (6-in.)-wide air-blocking shelf. This paper describes the methodology used to develop the CFD models. The effects of air-blocking shelves and dust collector-to-bailing airflow ratios were identified by the study, and problem regions were revealed under certain conditions. IntroductionSurface blasthole drilling can generate considerable amounts of respirable silica dust. These high dust concentrations can be exacerbated by the high silica content as drilling cuts through silica-bearing materials such as sandstone and shale, causing overexposures for miners to respirable silica dust. These overexposures can lead to silicosis, an occupational lung disease that has no cure and is often fatal. A review of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) respirable silica dust sample database from 2010 to 2016 for metal/nonmetal mining shows the following overexposure rates for occupations related to blasthole drilling: • 14.1 percent of rotary air drillers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (22 out of 156 samples).• 5.8 percent of rotary drillers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (nine out of 155 samples).• 7.3 percent of drill helpers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (three out of 41 samples).• 7.5 percent of blasters/shotfirers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (three out of 40 samples)."

The intelligent selection of wire cloth and perforated plate for screening surfaces seems a rather confusing subject to the newcomer in aggregate processing. The proper application of various screening surfaces is a complicated one and one could consider himself an expert only after many years of working with all applications. However, part of the subject matter could be simplified considerably for, the average screen user. In this paper an attempt will be made to do this, by presenting some comparative specification data along with cost figures Unfortunately, it is impossible in the limited scope of this paper to give actual service comparison records between different cloths or cloth and plate. Anyone who has considered making actual service comparisons for competing screening media is well aware of the almost insurmountable problems Their solution would form the basis for a separate paper on that subject alone. Therefore, this paper will be limited to comparative data up to the point of installation.

Many investigators believe that column flotation cells offer significant advantages over standard mechanical machines for the flotation of fine particles. However, because of their unique design and operation, conventional techniques for flotation cell scale-up and design cannot be applied to columns. In an attempt to help alleviate this problems a population balance model based on first principles has been developed for fine particle flotation in a column. Two different terms have been considered in the model, i.e., transport and rate. Transport terms, incorporating fluid flow and bouyancy, are used to describe the movement of air bubbles, unattached particles and bubble-particle aggregates along the length of the column. Rate terms, which describe the bubble-particle attachment process, have been derived from first principle considerations. Because the model is based on first principles, it can be useful for the design, control, optimization and scale-up of column flotation cells.

The implementation of autonomous technologies for production in surface mines demands changes in the existing monitoring and control systems. The present study deals with the concepts involved in the development of a decision support system (DSS) for the supervision of a combined fleet of manned and unmanned equipment operating in a surface mine. The project was carried out as part of an autonomous mining program that lasted from early 2006 until the end of 2008. The objective of the DSS was to achieve short-term planning goals while maintaining safe working conditions. Supervisory tasks become more complex when several autonomous vehicles operate simultaneously alongside manned equipment. The operation center where the DSS was installed allowed autonomous vehicle operations to be controlled while tracking technology reliability experiments performed on control display interfaces and interaction provided design parameters for more complex supervisory systems for autonomous mines. Weight may be defined as the gravitational attraction or earthpull on a body (mass). Thus, from a practical viewpoint, a scale or other form of weighing device is a mans for determining mss. Weighing devices fall into two principal categories: (1) gravimetric; and (2) non-gravimetric or nuclear devices. At present, after many centuries of use, the effect of gravitational force as a meas¬ure of mass in industry and commerce remains by far the most common method for mass (weight) determination. Non-gravimetric methods are just becoming established in the industry. The general trend is toward weighing materials on the Trove. The predominant advantage of continous weighing over batch weighing operations is its ability to handle large tonnages without interrupting the material flow. The accuracy and reliability ability of continuous weighing equipment have improved greatly over the past decade. However, static weighing equipment still outsells continuous weighing equipment, because it is considered more accurate. Batch weighing can also produce a continuous weighed delivery through automation where the process requires it. In caparison with continuous weighing devices, such as belt scales, the batch-type scales have same inherent advantages affecting their accuracy. For example, weighing 300 lbs. per minute on a belt scale may mean that only 3 lbs. will be on the scale mechanism at one time. In order to obtain a scale accuracy of 1/2%, the sensitivity must be at least 1/2% of 3 lbs. or 1/4 oz. On the other hand, a batch scale may discharge a 300 lbs. load every 60 seconds through a timing mechanism. An accuracy of 1/2% can be easily obtained with a sensitivity of 1/2% of 300 lbs. or 24-oz.

"INTRODUCTION Typical grinding electrification requirements are defined by high power, constant torque and slow speed. Dual pinion mills also include a need for tight tolerances in torque between the two motors, to avoid overloading any single motor. Standard induction (asynchronous) motors have often been used but only in combination with mechanical gearboxes (reducers), required to reduce process speed to the correct level for mill pinions. The gearbox introduces added system complexity, capital cost, maintenance and energy cost due to mechanical losses. SYNCHRONOUS AND ASYNCHRONOUS MOTORS Elimination of the gearbox requires a motor designed to operate at a very low speed (rpm). Traditionally, mill motor requirements were best served by synchronous motors. The benefits of synchronous motors include- • Higher Efficiency (no conductor losses in rotor) • Very high power at low speed • Flexible Power factor (leading or lagging) • Constant speed (not load dependent) • More accurate speed control Synchronous motor cost is higher due to construction complexity, need for exciter and excitation panel, brushes, brush lifters. Figure 1 represents the equivalent circuit for a synchronous motor.Asynchronous motors, also known as squirrel cage induction motors, are singly excited, per Figure 2, the resulting equivalency circuit is less complex and only in need of a single voltage source.Commonly, a DC voltage supply is connected to the rotor (both physically and electrically) via brushes. The DC voltage enables the production of flux in a single direction. The brushes are connected to rings. The slip rings encircle the rotor but are insulated from the rotor. The slip rings are connected to a rotor winding known as a field winding. On large motors, brushless exciters are often used. A brushless exciter is a small AC generator whose field circuits are mounted on the stator and armature circuits are mounted on the rotor shaft. The exciter generator’s 3-phase output is rectified to DC by a 3-phase rectifier (mounted on the shaft) and fed into the main DC field circuit. It is possible to adjust the field current on the main machine by controlling the small DC field current of the exciter generator (located on the stator). [1] Brushless synchronous motors are often preferred over the traditional brush design but introduce additional complexity to motor construction in the form of additional windings and rectifiers comprising the excitation circuit. It stands to reason that because of the additional complexity, a synchronous motor will be higher in cost than an equally rated asynchronous induction machine."
