The scope of this subject is a broad one. The demand for a metal with high refractory properties, great strength at elevated temperatures and high nuclear cross section, has put tungsten in the foreground as: the most promising metal to fill some of these requirements. Recently developed techniques have made it possible to roll large tungsten sheet and-the availability of fabricated tungsten is already upon us. More and more, the demand is for purer and still purer metals. Tungsten is no exception. As technology improves, we are learning more about the effect of foreign elements in minor amounts upon the chemical and physical properties of metals. As equipment and technology improve, specifications become more rigid, and reasonably so. Pure metals have revealed properties hitherto unknown in metals produced by former technology.

A "straight wire" flow through magnetic ore separator has been designed, built and successfully used to separate magnetite from typical slurries. The purpose of these experiments was to simulate the high field profile of a "straight wire" superconducting magnetic separator which would be capable of separating weakly magnetic hematite ore from typical slurries. Magnetite was used as the test mineral because it experinces the same magnetic forces at low field as does hematite at high field. The present separator concept is based on the fact that there is a particle concentration profile due to the gravity field for low velocity turbulent flow. When a magnetic field force of -g is applied the concentration profile of the magnetic particles will be reversed leaving the nonmagnetic particles flowing alone at the bottom of the channel. By means of a divider at the end of the channel the concentrate is separated from the tailings. It is shown that the time needed to deflect hematite particles in a narrow cylindrical channel concentric with the superconducting wire is small enough so that high throughputs in the turbulent flow region are possible. In the case of a high field superconducting separator the centrifugal force could replace gravity by rotating the flow around the straight wire conductor.

The production of oxygen on the Moon utilizing indigenous materials is paramount to a successful lunar colonization. And several processes have been put forth to accomplish this. The LLOX generation schemes which have received the most study to date are those involving?: 1) the reduction of ilmenite (FeTi03) by H2, C, CO, CH4, CO-CI2, & Cl2 plasma, 2) magma electrolysis, both unadulterated and fluoride-fluxed, and 3) several others, including carbo-chlorination, HF acid leaching, fluorine extraction, magma oxidation, and vapor pyrolysis. The H2 reductions of ilmenite and magma electrolysis processes have received the most study to date. They are both feasible schemes with various pros and cons, including their feedstock requirements. However, all processes should be addressed at least at the onset of our considerations. There is an obvious need for considerably more experimentation and study. Some of these requisite studies are in progress, and this paper reviews several of the most studied and feasible processes for winning oxygen from lunar materials.

The title of my paper today is "public relations challenges for the pending minerals crunch". There isn't anyone in this room who would dispute. That the minerals industry has always had public relations challenges . . . No matter what the circumstances, mineral shortage or abundance. The industry suffers from an image that is second to none in longevity. It defies all actuarial formulas of the past or the future. Never mind that such an image is outdated, distorted, overstated, and reiterated. I submit that the minerals industry had public relations challenges long before there was anything called public relations. This account of egyptian mining practices, recorded for posterity by Diodorus Suculus at the end of the second century, b.c., is indicative. "On the confines of Egypt . . . And Ethiopia is a place which has many great mines of gold, where the gold is got together with much suffering and expense. The kings of Egypt collect together and consign to the gold-mines those who have been combined for crime, and who have been made captive in way . . . Sometimes only themselves, but sometimes likewise their kindred. "Those who have been consigned to the mines, being maw in number and bound with fetters, toil their tasks continuously both by day and all night long, getting no rest and jealously kept from all escape.

Extensive soil conditioning was required to allow Earth Pressure Balance(EPB) tunneling on the South Bay Ocean Outfall tunnel project in San Diego, California, near the Mexican border. This tunnel extends 19,000 feet out under the Pacific Ocean and was mined through soil formations including silts, sands, gravels, cobbles, and boulders. EPB pressures ranged from 3.0 to 7.0 bar, with the maximum pressures required when mining through the highly permeable granular formations.

Direct force measurements were conducted using an atomic force microscope (AFM) to study the mechanism of copper-activation of sphalerite. The force measurements were conducted between a sphalerite plate and a hydrophobic glass sphere in xanthate solutions of various pHs. The glass sphere may represent the hydrophobic air bubbles interacting with minerals during flotation. The force measurements conducted with unactivated sphalerite in 10') M KEX solutions did not show the presence of hydrophobic force. On the other hand, the results obtained with copper-activated sphalerite at pH 9.2 and 4.6 showed strong hydrophobic forces. However, the results obtained at pH 6.8 showed no evidence of hydrophobic force, which provides an explanation for the difficulty in floating sphalerite at neutral pH.

A Mark IV surface force apparatus (SF A) was used to conduct direct force measurements in dodecylamine hydrogenchloride collector solution between mica surfaces at varying pHs. It has been found that the long-range hydrophobic forces reach a maximum at pH 9.5, which also corresponds to the maxima attained by the contact angle and flotation recovery of quartz. The charge densities are comparable on both mica and quartz surfaces (0.40-0.48 run2), making it possible to draw conclusions on the flotation of quartz from the direct force measurements conducted on mica. Therefore, it may be suggested that the maximum flotation recovery of quartz m the range of pH 8.0-10.3 may be attributed to the appearance of long-range hydrophobic force, which in turn can be related to the formation of a close-packed monolayer (or hemimicelle) in the presence of neutral amines formed as a result of hydrolysis.

"The iron ores of the Lake Superior region are found almost exclusively in rocks of Huronian age, the only exception of importance being in the Vermilion district. It may be estimated that about 95 per cent of the ores thus far mined have been obtained from Huronian rocks. Although these ores come from rocks of varying age and slightly varying type, they have many features in common, and therefore may readily be described together.The iron formations of the Lake Superior region consist essentially of interbanded layers of mixtures in widely varying proportions of silica and iron oxide, and are called taconite, ferruginous chert, or jaspilite. They vary considerably in hard¬ness and color, depending upon the tenor of silica and the history of the rock. Local phases of the iron bearing formation consist of cherty iron carbonates, greenalite or ferrous silicate, rocks, amphibole-magnetite masses, cherts and slates, and pyritic quartz rocks. The average iron content of all the original phases of the iron bearing formations, excluding interbedded slates, is about 25 per cent, while the average iron content for all portions of the formation, whether in the original condition or not, is about 38 per cent. It is believed that this difference is due essen¬tially to the removal of silica in solution from the. primary phases, and, of course, such removal of silica has in many cases produced material now used as iron ore, since it contains con¬siderably more than 38 per cent of iron."

The Florida Peninsula has existed as a part of a much broader plateau, since at least the Early Cretaceous. This plateau, the Floridan Plateau, now consists of the present peninsula and a broad submerged shelf of equivalent size extending the length of the state and out into the Gulf of Mexico. Florida Peninsula was separated from the mainland United States by a negative area called the Suwannee Straits. To the south of this feature existed an environment similar to today?s Bahamo Banks where very pure calcium and magnesium carbonates with associated evaporites were deposited. Thus the Eocene and Oligocene contain little or no quartz sand or clay minerals except in the Panhandle west of the Suwannee Straits where some clastics were contributed by rivers from the north.

The investigation into the hydrologic and hydrogeochemical influence of longwall coal mining in the Appalachian coal basin was under- taken in response to the need to technically address problems of damaged or impaired well yields, and quality deterioration. Prior to this study, issues regarding reduced aquifer yields and degraded water quality had to be handled in a very qualitative manner. Such an approach would, in the long run, claim a heavy toll on the mining industry. The primary objective of this undertaking, therefore, was to provide sufficient and reliable information base for the determination of the local and possibly the regional effects of longwall mining on well yields, and the hydraulic and hydrogeochemical parameters of the immediate surface and subsurface water systems. Specifically, the program was designed to supply definitive data to answer the following series of questions: 1. Does longwall mining affect the quantity and quality of water in local wells above and adjacent to longwall panels and barrier pillars? 2. If the water quality is affected as soon as mining takes place, does it heal? or if it is not affected immediately, does it change over a longer period of time? 3. How do the aquifer water transmitting characteristics respond to induced physical ad hydrologic variations? 4. What is the extent of the various changes in quantity and quality of the water resources? 5. Should and can standard hydrologic evaluation techniques be used to determine the hydraulic properties of highly fractured zones located within a larger and less permeable aquifer?

Mining coal under deep cover conditions is certainly the proper phrase to use in describing one of our newest operations. Located in the southwest corner of Virginia is this operation which is the Beatrice Mine of the Beatrice Pocahontas Company, a joint venture of Republic Steel Corporation and Island Creek Coal Company. The mine is working in the No. 3 Pocahontas seam in an assigned area of over 9500 acres containing over 60 million tons of recoverable, high quality, low volatile coal. The site of the mine opening was at Keen Mountain, Virginia, where the seam lay 1350 feet below the surface. This depth, greater than anything attempted thus far in the coal industry on this continent, would pose some problems, we felt, with which we had not previously had to contend.

During the 1950's and 1960's a program of geologic mapping of counties has been underway in Nevada by geologists of the U. S. Geological Survey and the Nevada Bureau of Mines. The aping has been done principally at reconnaissance scales, with more detailed work in local areas. Geologic maps are either published or open-filed for about a dozen counties at scales of 1:200,000 or 1:250,000. One by-product of the geologic mapping has been the recognition of about 80 Tertiary volcanic centers from which large or very large volumes of volcanic material ranging from rhyolitic to andesitic in composition have been erupted. For purposes of this discussion these are regarded as the major centers; the tally does not include hundreds and perhaps thousands of small rhyolitic domes and plugs and basaltic vents. About 15 to 20 of the 80 major centers are believed to be calderas ranging in diameter from 3 to 25 miles. Some have been described in the literature by geologists of the Nevada Test Site and others. However, the vast majority of the 80 centers have not been described in print, and we are indebted to our colleagues for locating them for us in many of the counties. There are three definite steps in the making of a mining industry in any country. These are as follows: Step A - Geological Mapping This step covers the basic geological mapping of the country at scales of 1/250, 000 up to l/50, 000. This step eliminates territory and directs the exploration teams to the areas of potential interest. Step B Prospecting This step includes all phases from detailed geology through geophysics and drilling up to the point of proving that an economic ore body exists. Step C - Mine Development This is the expensive step, involving the creation of the mine, including shaft-sinking, ore treatment plant, etc.

Computor analysis has opened a new world of information for the mining of resources. This paper is directed at the mining of coal. The same procedures apply to most mining projects. The available facts when evaluated against the variables produce the answers. The project must be carefully analyzed, so that the facts can be organized in a data file. The file can be expanded as additional information is obtained during the entire life of the mine. If the mine is pre-planned, the file will be expanded in an orderly fashion and updated information will be available at all times. The development of a property goes through several phases; Exploration, Economic Analysis, Development, Production, and Reclamation. Each phase is an expansion of the data file. The validity of the answers is directly related to the accuracy and quantity of available data. The basis for a data file is horizontal position, and elevation of each piece of information. A coordinate system and datum are reference for a digital (X, Y and Z) position in a spatial system, a three dimensional digital model of the mine. The current practice is to use the State Plane Coordinate system and elevations as established by the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. Each state has adopted this system by law. In the event there is litigation, it is an advantage to have the data on the legally recognized system. The control must be expanded so that all data can be assigned a digital position, and planned to fulfill the requirements for all phases of the mining operation. The project must be analyzed to insure that the objectives can be achieved without duplication or loss of time. sufficient data must be available to reach each required level of information. Minerals Engineering Company (MECO) is a relatively small, promotionally oriented mineral exploration company founded in Colorado in 1948 during the height of the uranium boom. The company has been: 1. in uranium exploration and production 2. a drilling company 3. a manufacturer of Geiger counters 4. a major tungsten producer 5. then dormat for several years and 6. now we are back into exploration on a broad scale. We have been in underground lead and zinc production in the 1970's but we are now involved primarily in "wheeling and dealing" in mineral exploration. The company has had diverse interests in the past and we are presently diversifying to some extent into oil and gas ventures.

Many processing techniques have existed for thousands of years. For example, Georgius Agricola, in De Re Metallica (1556), described equipment and techniques, such as picking tables, smelting furnaces and cupolas of various types, sieves, launders. various types of crushers and grinders and other equipment, all still in use in one form or another. In translating Agricola's work into English, the late Herbert C. and Lou Hoover provided the following summary indicating the early history of particular mineral- processing operations :

In flotation or hydrometallurgical leaching of minerals, the cumulative metals recovery for a given process condition generally approaches a maximum value or an asymptote as the process time increases. This paper discusses the experimental methods of identifying and obtaining the asymptote of metals recovery through kinetic studies. In flotation, the kinetic asymptote of metal recovery, or ultimate recovery, is a function of grinding and collector dosage, but within a realistic variable range, is not a function of pH or temperature. However, variations in grinding, collector dosage, pH and temperature, all exert noticeable effects on flotation kinetics. Frothers generally have a minor affect on the asymptote, but have a major affect on flotation kinetics. The asymptote from batch flotation is found to be identical to that of a continuous flotation. In hydrometallurgical Leaching, the asymptote of metal recovery for a given leaching system is a function of such variables as temperature, particle size, and acid concentration.

When Eugene Bailey asked me to contribute to this session on "Canadian exploration - 1976", it took a little coaxing before he got me to agree. My immediate reaction was, what could i say about Canadian exploration that already had not been said a hundred times in the past few years; secondly, why include a banking person in such a discussion? Everyone knows banks only come into the picture after the discovery has been made and feasibility well established and validated. Rather than wrestle with these misgivings, I decided to take the easy way out and go on blind faith in Eugene - that is, he asked me so he must think that I could come up with some useful thoughts and at least touch upon some of the pros and cons of exploration in Canada. The object of the whole exploration exercise is to Find economic deposits, once they are found, one cannot really move them elsewhere to mine them. It follows, therefore, that we should really be speaking about the pros and cons of mining In Canada and my treatise will eventually lean in this direction. In any event and before getting down to the pros and cons, let us take a quick look at the history of mineral resource development in our country since the end of world war II. At that time, we were producing well under one billion dollars worth of mineral products including hydrocarbons.
