A review of published literature on the biosorption of metals using nonliving biomass is presented. Factors such as pH, temperature, initial metal concentration, biomass loading, the presence of co-ions and the pretreatment of biomass influence the metal uptake by biomass. Although few generalizations are possible, unified theories regarding the mechanism of uptake are not available. Therefore, the above aspects of metal biosorption have to be defined individually for each biomass and metal-ion pair.

The Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 (NWPA) assigns the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) the responsibi1it.y of locating, constructing. operating, closing and decommissioning a nuclear waste repository. Prior to submittal of a licensee application to the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the DOE is required by 10 CFR part 60 to conduct a program of site characterization for the site to be described in such application. Site characterization includes an exploration and research program in the field and laboratory to determine the geologic conditions and ranges of those parameters which are necessary for determining the suitabi1it.y of the site as a geologic repository. The information thus collected should be able to establish with reasonable assurance that the public and environment will be adequately protected from the hazards associated with a repository at the site. This paper demonstrates by example a geostatistical approach which, on the basis of the existing limited data base, can be used to evaluate (1) whether existing information on a certain parameter is adequate to be considered representative. (2) if additional information is required, where should the additional sampling or testing be performed, and (3) whether the new1.y acquired data along with the existing information constitute representative data.

Golder Moffitt and Associates (GMA)", were commissioned to reassess a large metallic low grade orebody. One of the aims of the study was to estimate recoverable reserves. Recoverable reserves are here defined as ore reserves for a specific mining block size. The mining block is that block on which the decision that the material is ore or waste is made. Recoverable reserves take into consideration mining methods. New methods for solving this type of problem were recently developed in Geostatistics and so for this reason GMA called for the technical assistance of the Centre de Geostatistique (C.G). The complete estimation was done using the geostatistical techniques and programs of the C.G together with some of the programs of GMA. As the mine was in production at the time the study commenced it was-possible to make frequent checks on the estimated values using blast-hole data. The ore reserves were also estimated using the more conventional interpolation method of inverse square of distance weighting.

Some attempts were made to recover and remove heavy metal elements, such as uranium, copper and chromium, from aqueous systems by using several phosphate compounds. The phosphorylated derivatives of polysaccharides, chitin phosphate, chitosan phosphate and cellulose phosphate, have high abilities to accumulate heavy metals, such as uranium, copper, manganese, cobalt, cadmium, zinc, nickel and chromium, compared with non-phosphorylated polysaccharides. In order to obtain basic information on the recovery and removal of uranium that may be present in industrial effluents, mine waste water and seawater, the adsorption of uranium by chitin phosphate and chitosan phosphate was investigated in details. The adsorption of uranium by chitin phosphate and chitosan phosphate was much greater than copper, cadmium, manganese, zinc, cobalt, nickel, magnesium and calcium. The adsorption of uranium was very rapid and was affected by pH of the solution, temperature. granule radius and co-existence of carbonate ion. The amounts of uranium adsorbed on the adsorbents increased linearly as the external uranium concentration increased. Uranium adsorbed on chitin phosphate easily desorbed with diluted sodium carbonate solution. On the other hand, uranyl and cobalt ions were separated from each other by using chitin phosphate. Along with these fundamental research, some attempts were made to recover uranium from seawater.

At Lupin mine gold is spatially and genetically linked to zones of hydrothermal alteration in iron-formation which are symmetrically developed adjacent to late Archean quartz veins. Immediately adjacent to the veins, coarse grained, typically gold- and sulfide-poor, calc-silicate rocks are often present. These rocks comprise hedenbergite + quartz ± grossular garnet ± epidote ± scheelite ± calcite. Sulfides (pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite and loellingite) and gold are concentrated in the next zone and occur with hornblende-rich rocks comprised of hornblende, quartz, hedenbergite and grunerite. Furthest from the veins are gold- and sulfide-poor, grunerite-rich iron formation comprising grunerite, quartz, hornblende and sometimes magnetite. Although the alteration assemblages have similarities with skarns, they develop in iron formation, and are at best indirectly related to intrusive igneous rocks. Geological and geochemical data clearly indicate the calc-silicate rocks are metasomatic in origin.

Back in 1994, Claude Bazin presented a novel method for linking size data from milling models to the feed input of flotation models. It was achieved with the simple addition of a metal/mineral distribution—size distribution relationship. This allows grade and recovery predictions from a varying mine plan via product size distribution predictions. This paper presents a case study where this elegant method has been used to build a very powerful forecaster at a process plant, built from historic operating data. The methodology has been used by this operation to forecast production on a quarterly, annual, and life-of-mine basis since the late 1990s. It has been upgraded several times to incorporate new drivers as the complexity of feedstocks has increased over the years.

During the past 20 years, methods of multivariate statistical analysis have been developed on mainframe computers for the integration of geological, geophysical, geochemical and LANDSAT data in mineral resource appraisal. At present, it is becoming increasingly feasible to perform mathematical image analysis of digitized patterns on microcomputers. This has led us to develop a new method of statistical pattern integration for mineral exploration. In this paper, the new method is used to outline, by means of posterior probabilities, exploration targets within small areas of which the prior probabilities for occurrence of new mineral deposits had been estimated by multivariate analysis.

The leaching characteristics of non-homogeneous ores have traditionally been difficult to assess in laboratory tests. A result of the large sample size necessary to ensure representativity, this difficulty is most acute for ores containing nuggets or other irregular occurrences of precious minerals. Consequently, small-scale leaching tests are often regarded as indicative rather than conclusive. The predictive nature of leaching tests can be improved by applying the experimental design concepts of blocking and randomization. In the case of column leaching, experimental 'blocks" are constructed with the same number of columns as there are separate test conditions. These blocks are treated identically throughout the test, with differences between columns within each block being the variables of interest. To maximize the uniformity of the blocks, randomization procedures are employed in the preparation of the sample and conduct of the test. The initial ore sample is screened and individual column charges composited from randomly selected increments from each size fraction. The leaching order, daily solution analyses, and processing of leach residues are similarly randomized. The observed differences in leaching performance between the columns in each block are compared to determine the over-all outcome of the test. A statistical analysis using t distributions gives a quantitative measure of the reproducibility of the outcome.

The consumption rate of Estonian oil shale increases due to the growing rate of exported oil-shale oil. Estonian oil shale active resources in working mines are predicted until the year of 2025 when the consumption rate stays at the level of 12 tons per year. If the consumption rate stays at that level, new mines should be opened after 20 years, if the rate increases new mines should be opened even earlier. The predicted active resources in Estonian oil shale deposits are calculated for 60 years, based on the parameters of the power station technicoeconomics. As a result, there is a need to open new mines. One of the potential areas for surface mine is the Tammiku-Kose prospect area (Rheinbaun Engineering, 1996).

Karst hosted lignite deposits are characterized by variable thickness of lignite that was deposited in depressions in the karst topography and by the variable extent and shape of the lignite pods. Since the lignite to be mined will feed a mine mouth generating plant, an extremely important criteria in the mine plan is to assure continuous feed to the plant. The variability in both the extent of the pods and the thickness of the lignite within the pods must be taken into account in any mine design in order to quantify the risk that an area being developed will have enough lignite to feed the plant for the specified period. Indicator kriging was used to create a model of lignite thickness of the deposit. Pod boundaries were determined from the indicator kriging model by two methods. First, contour maps showing the probability that the lignite is above a minimum mining thickness were prepared. Using these maps the mine planning engineer can determine either conservative or optimistic boundaries. The second method recognized that the most costly error that can be made in the mine plan is to run out of lignite. Thus, a loss function was determined from the costs of overestimation and underestimation. Using this function, the probability that minimizes the risks of overestimation versus underestimation was calculated.

The paper describes the use of portable aerosol monitors in determining real-time concentrations of diesel soot and respirable total dust in dieselized mines. The field studies were conducted in a simulated diesel environment in the laboratory where no other type of dust was present, and in four underground mines with multi-diesel machine operations. Two packages for the real-time monitoring of diesel soot were prepared which included two types of aerosol monitors: a Miniram, model PDM-3, and a Sibata, model PDS-1. These monitors utilize the principle of light-scattering to measure the airborne mass concentration in the environment. The monitoring device results were compared against the Time-Weighted-Average (TWA) values produced by the gravimetric filter sampling method, permitting calibration factors to be determined for each field test. Both instrument packages provided comparable results. The instrument calibration factors varied for different tests, which may be due to different material composition, particle size distribution, density and shape of the aerosols. This approach for real-time determination of diesel soot is found to be simple, inexpensive and easy to use. More field tests for diesel soot determination and further research on size distribution of particulates in dieselized mines are required.

Evidence has accumulated indicating that cultural change toward safer workplace behaviors is beginning to occur systematically in the coal industry. Through a range of programmatic mining company successes, enforcement and litigative actions, economic responses to competition and integrated efforts by federal and state agencies, a broader participation of safety and training professionals is being achieved to address prioritized workplace problems at mines. Small steps in workplace-related improvements have been realized already, but the trends in industry safety statistics, coupled with focused programmatic initiatives, indicate that more definitive and systematic steps are occurring to improve safe behavior in the workplace routinely.

Carlin-type. disseminated, sediment-hosted gold deposits can be better described as hydrocarbon-associated gold deposits. A new genetic model for these deposits involves the intrusion of one or more small bodies of magma into a shallow hydrocarbon reservoir or ma of hydrocarbonenriched rocks, imposing a convecting geothermal system on the local groundwater. Pyrite, commonly associated with the organic material, provides a substrate for deposition of gold and other trace elements in an environment rich in dissolved sulfide. Both diagenetic and hydrothermal pyrite may act as gold depositional sites. Thermal cracking of hydrocarbons, catalyzed by illite, subsequently generates an oxidizing environment by depleting hydrogen. As oxidation increases, arsenic sulfide minerals and barite m stabiied at first. Increasing hydrogen depletion converts sulfide to sulfate, generating acid oxidizing conditions which: alter pyrite to hematite; continue the deposition of sulfates; and ultimately develop late stage acid-sulfate assemblages containing minerals such as kaolinite. alunite. and jarosite. Gold released from the oxidizing pyrite is redeposited as free gold, and pehaps remobilized.

Imaging is a fundamental requirement when characterizing minerals, ores and related products. Images are used for presentation, texture analysis, characterization, image analysis, identification, etc. The image mode that is utilized is dependent on the application, mineral properties and available instruments. Different instruments produce images that display different features. In order of increasing complexity they are: hand specimens, a non-polarizing microscope, polarizing optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), low vacuum SEM, microprobe, secondary ion mass spectrometer, staining, cathodoluminescence, tomography and others. Image analysis uses images produced with either an optical microscope or a SEM, but the SEM images are superior in this application. The copper segregation process is designed to concentrate oxidized copper ores or mixed sulfide-oxide copper ores which are refractory to normal and cheaper mineral dressing or leaching processes. Such ores contain copper silicates or highly disseminated copper minerals in a gangue not entirely free from limestone or dolomite. Concentra¬tion by flotation is, under these circumstances, not possible and the acid-consuming constituents do not permit acid leaching. A high temperature treatment at 700-800°C, in the presence of a small amount of sodium chloride and of finely divided carbon, concentrates the copper into easily floated metal by a kind of reducing chloridizing roast. The sulfides, if present, are either oxidized in the heating stage and react like oxides or float with the metallic copper in the flotation step. The ores which have the aforementioned characteristics and which are high grade enough to pay for the treatment are scarce, so that the process has only a limited application. Theory of Copper Segregation Sodium chloride, reacting with water vapor and the acid gangue constituents, produces hydrogen chloride which reacts with the copper minerals. The resource classification methodologies have always been a topic of research and debate. There are both traditional and Geostatistical methods used in practice. Because of the uniqueness of each ore deposit, it seems almost impossible to have a single industry-accepted norm for resource classification. Therefore, some practitioners have adapted the methodologies to suit the deposits they are working on, but many simply use the methods they are comfortable with. Another reason for the existence of varying classification methodologies is the lack of an easy and established way to measure the confidence in the estimates. Therefore, their classification becomes a subject of debate. In this paper, a new approach is offered to classify the resources using a "Resource Classification Index." The approach using this index takes into account the local variation, the spatial data configuration around the block being estimated, as well as the traditional distance measures. A case study for a gold deposit is presented to demonstrate how this new index can be used to classify the resources. The results from this approach are compared to those from two popular classification methodologies.

Humate mining in New Mexico is a small industry [455 m3 (16,079 cu yd) valued at $395,894 for 1983] with three mines active in 1985. Either humate (carbonaceous claystones rich in organic matter) or weathered coal ("leonardite") high in humic acid are mined. The humic acid content needed to meet consumer specifications determines which type is mined. The humate and "leonardite" now mined in New Mexico are used primarily as soil conditioners or as drilling mud additives. The potential resource for both are very extensive within the coal-bearing formations of the San Juan Basin in northwest New Mexico.

A variety of approaches have been used in the recent literature for the estimation of pre-mining (or natural background) metal concentrations in areas affected by mining. The following is a list of some of these approaches: (1) historical and anecdotal data, (2) remote analogues (other similarly mineralized areas), (3) proximal analogues (nearby mineralized areas), (4) sediment sampling (streambeds, lakes, estuaries, floodplain deposits, and soil profiles), (5) stable isotopes (hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and carbon), (6) geochemical modeling (forward, equilibrium-based), (7) geochemical modeling (forward, kinetic- and transport-based, and inverse), (8) statistical analyses, (9) mass balance on oxygen flux, (10) mass balance with age determination of weathered material. Examples of each approach are described, and the strengths and limitations of each approach are discussed.

Since first introduced, the coal mine roof rating (CMRR) has been widely accepted as a tool for geologic characterization and mine planning. This paper discusses the application of the CMRR to another practical ground-control problem: extended cuts. Extended cuts, i.e., cuts greater than 6 m (20 ft) in length, are commonly used with remote-control continuous miners. Extended cuts can greatly increase productivity, but they have been associated with a number of fatal roof-falls. When extended cuts are attempted in weak roof material, the roof may collapse before it can be bolted Until now, it has not been possible to predict where conditions may not be suitable for extended cuts. In this study, data on the CMRR and extended-cut experience were collected at 36 mines in seven of the United States. It was found that, when the CMRR was greater than 56, deep cuts were routine in nearly every case. When the CMRR was less than 37, extended cuts were almost never taken, and, when the CMRR was between 38 and 56, extended cuts were sometimes, but not always, feasible. The data also show that extended cuts are less likely to be stable if either the entry span or the depth of cover increases.

Recently, e-commerce has moved its attention from back-office functions into manufacturing, in order to significantly reduce direct operating costs. This paper describes many of the Web-Powered Manufacturing initiatives being employed across various industries, and relates them to similar opportunities being started within the mining and mineral-processing sector. The following opportunities are enabled by Web-Powered Manufacturing: • Collaboration with outside experts to extend their pool of resources • Management of remote and distributed operations • Tie-in of small operations to a larger operation • Monitoring a position in a JV operated by a partner • Managing a plant located in someone else's facility • Having a chemical supplier manage his inventory in a customer's tanks • Having an equipment supplier remotely troubleshoot his equipment installed in a customer's site • Having an additive supplier provide remote pro-active. guidance in optimization of a customer's operation • Having software suppliers take responsibility for the results of their applications • Outsourcing software and systems support by providing remote access Details of one of these opportunities are described in this article, and the benefits captured using this approach and the technologies necessary to make them a reality are emphasized.
