"Triton Mining Corporation acquired the rights to Mina El Limon in Nicaragua in 1993 by international bid. The bid included the gold operations at Limon and an exploration concession of approximately 4000 km2. Triton assumed control of operations and exploration in May 1994.The Limon mine is located in west-central Nicaragua, approximately 100 kilometers northwest of Managua. The climate is tropical, characterized by a wet season from May through October, and a dry season November through April. Gold at Limon is associated with both banded quartz and silicified breccia veins in Tertiary volcanic rocks, belonging to the lower Coyol Group. Mining is from two open pits and one mechanized underground operation. A second underground mine is currently under development for production during 1997.This paper describes the expansion of the milling facility at El Limon from a nominal capacity of 400 tonnes/day, producing approximately 20,000 ounces of gold annually, to the existing 900 tonne per day mill operation. Engineering of the new mill facility was initiated in September 1994 and construction was completed a year later."

The number of railroad coal cars (open top hoppers), dominated rail car orders and deliveries in 1975 according to announcements made February 11, by the Association of American Railroads and the American Railway Car Institute. Acting to keep ahead of increased coal production, the railroads installed 21,748 new coal cars in 1975, the most since 1957. The 1975 installation resulted in a net increase of 6,560 coal cars and an overall gain of 4.5 percent in the total capacity of the hopper car fleet. With most of the new coal cars going into unit train service --where car utilization is greatest --the railroads actual coal-carrying capacity was increased far more than 4.5 percent. The AAR estimated that unit train operations now move 50 percent of all rail-hauled coal compared to only 42 percent 2 years ago. COBALT - The Societe Miniere de Tenke Fungurume (SMTF) copper-cobalt project in Zaire reportedly was suspended in January for an indefenite length of time. According to officials, the deferment resulted from a number of adverse factors, one of which was exceptional increases in capital costs. The project was scheduled for completion in early 1978, with an eventual production of 14.3 million pounds of cobalt per year. Reserves of cobalt were reported to be 505 million pounds. SMTF is a consortium and includes American, British, French, Japanese, and Zairian interests.

Geotechnical Baseline Reports often estimate the number of cobbles that will be encountered in terms of volume or weight. These estimates are practically impossible to verify in the field. ClaroVia Holdings in conjunction with Frontier Kemper Constructors Inc. developed Digital Geologist 2.0 to classify and count cobbles discharged from an EPB TBM at the RSC7 project in Burbank, CA. The system worked by using two stereoscopic laser sensors with a global shutter to scan and count cobbles at 12 frames per second. Results of the effort are revealed along with lessons learned and paths for improvement.

Over 500 industrial, academic, and government representatives from Europe, Canada, and the United States attended the first large symposium ever held in this country on fly ash utilization and technology, March 14-16, 1967, at Pittsburgh, Pa. Sponsored by the Edison Electric Institute, the National Coal Association, and the Bureau of Mines, the symposium featured 27 formal presentations by leading reports from the United States and Europe on all major phases of fly ash production, utilization, and research. Representing the three sponsoring organizations were Edison Electric Institute, James D. William- son, The Dayton Power and Light Co.; National Coal Association, James R. Garvey, Bituminous Coal Research, Inc; and Bureau of Mines, Harry Perry. Symposium chairman was John H. Faber of the Bureau of Mines. Gerard C. Gambs, Consolidation Coal Co., addressed the opening session. Moderated by Mr. Garvey, President and Director of Research of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., the opening session was devoted to a discussion of the nature of the fly ash problem, including availability, specifications, and limitations on its use. Subsequent sessions covered Fly ash marketing, fly ash utilization in concrete and masonry products, specialized uses, and recent developments in basic fly ash research. Others serving as session chairmen were Oscar E. Manz, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, University of North Dakota; Mrs. Katharine Mather, Chief, Petrography and X-ray Section, Concrete Division, U.S. Army Engineers Waterways Experiment Station; Mr. Williamson, and Mr. Perry.

Introduction It is believed that the present paper will be of some interest, not because of any outstanding features of Renabie milling practice but because Renabie is the first gold mining property in a newly explored area - in Leeson and Rennie townships, Sudbury district, Ontario - to reach the production stage. The Renabie mill was originally designed by the General Engineering Company (Canada), Limited, as a 300-ton plant and went into operation in June, 1947, treating an average of only 128 tons a day for the balance of that year. Toward the end of 1948 the capacity of the plant was expanded to 450 tons a day, and the tonnage treated was gradually increased from the 1947 figure to the point where 420 tons a day was averaged for the first nine months of 1949. Description of Ore In general, the outstanding gangue component of Renabie ore is white quartz, which comprises at least 80 per cent of its total bulk and in some sections considerably more. Virtually all the gold occurs in very finely divided state; only very rarely has free gold coarser than 325 mesh been observed. The ore has a very low sulphide content, ranging from about 0.50 to 1.00 per cent by weight. The gold occurs both free in the gangue and ? locked in sulphides, the proportion of one to the other varying considerably from one orebody to the other. Pyrite is by far the most abundant sulphide, followed by galena, which, however, appears to be entirely absent in some of the orebodies. Minor amounts of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, and sphalerite have been noted. The ore appears to be entirely free, or almost so, of minerals containing arsenic, antimony, or molybdenum, and in general it could be described as free milling. The various hindrances to extraction of the gold which have been met with are believed to be due largely to the very finely divided state of the metal and to its intimate association with the sulphides and gangue. The ore contains silver, with the gold-silver ratio about 3:1.

(Canal Zone Meeting , October , 1910.) INTRODUCTION. IT is a curious fact that while in our Transactions there are papers dealing with mining-districts in all parts of the world, in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia, there is not one which describes the mining possibilities of Nicaragua; our near neighbor. To be most interested in distant objects, like the moon, .and to neglect what lies at our feet, appears to be a trait of human nature. The neglect of Nicaragua is not confined to the American Institute of Mining Engineers. In no other transactions am I :able to find papers dealing with mining in Nicaragua, some parts of which are as much in need of discovery and research as the North Pole.. I hope this paper will be the precursor of many others to be printed in our Transactions, dealing not only with the mining possibilities of Nicaragua, but with the whole of Central America, where there are vast areas awaiting skill and capital for their development. Much of this capital and skill should come from the United States in the future, although it is probable that European capitalists, when they appreciate fully the possibilities, will investigate more and more the mining-resources of Nicaragua and other Central American republics. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of Nicaragua showing the principal mining-districts. II. HISTORY. Mining in Nicaragua did not begin yesterday. It was commenced by civilized man when the Spanish conquerors penetrated into the interior and forced the natives to procure the precious metal for them. It is strange that the Spaniards did not find more gold, and work on a scale as extensive as in Colombia and other parts of South America. When the word "gas"' is mentioned in connection with mining almost invariably it is inferred that the explosive gas, methane, is in mind and that the reference is to coal mining. Although methane is likely to occur in any coal mine the metal mines of the world contain by far a greater variety of gases than do the coal mines. Often the gases in metal mines are as dangerous as the gases likely to be found in coal mines, and sometimes are even more deadly. A coal mine is more likely to contain methane than a metal mine. In rare instances it may contain high percentages of nitrogen or carbon dioxide or it may be deficient in oxygen where the air is confined in a blind end or in a sealed region. Much more rarely relatively small percentages of ethane or other hydrocarbons with an odor of ether, gasoline, or kerosene, or minute percentages of hydrogen sulphide are found in a coal mine. During a coal-mine fire or explosion carbon monoxide content is likely to be high (4 per cent or more), and if the coal contains much sulphur the high fumes may contain some sulphur dioxide.

Underground mining is a dynamic art and science with a diverse set of design, production, and economic criteria that must be considered before selecting an optimal method to extract the ore. While all methods can be technically classified as either self-supported, supported, or caving, the multitude of subsystems and existing variations bear witness to the fact that each orebody is unique and, as such, justifies an individual approach to optimize mineral extraction. In this sense, underground mining is an art. The ability to evaluate the unique characteristics of each ore body and utilize sound engineering principles to design the optimal system constitutes effective method selection. The task by no means ends at this juncture, however. Subsequent implementation requires an ability for modification. Very rarely are all the facts available to make a concrete decision prior to development of the resource. As a result, the risk of a wrong decision can never be eliminated. This requires a significant degree of flexibility with each method. Each unit of exploration, development, or exploitation work contributed to a deposit enhances knowledge of the ore body. The best mining methods are those that correctly account for the known parameters but provide an allowance for change at minimal cost and adapt to unanticipated conditions.

The Monument Valley and White Canyon districts are in northeastern Arizona and southeastern Utah. Exploration and mining for uranium has been conducted in these districts since the late 1940's. In July 1965, ore reserves plus ore production at 174 properties were approximately 3.3 million tons of ore containing about 19 million pounds U3O8, of which about 10 per cent remained in reserves. The two largest mines, Monument No. 2 and Happy Jack, together account for about 45 per cent of the sum of production and reserves. Approximately half the deposits in these districts contain less than 1000 tons of ore. Nearly 5000 feet of Permian, Triassic, and Jurassic sedimentary rocks, mainly continental in origin, are exposed in these districts. All the important uranium deposits are in the Shinarump, the basal member of the Chinle Formation of Triassic age. The Shinarump lies on a widespread unconformity. It is composed of fluvial sediments, generally less than 100 feet thick, that were deposited by streams flowing from a source to the south. Most of the deposits are in an arcuate belt, convex to the west. This belt, 3 to 12 miles wide, extends from Monument Valley northward nearly 130 miles. It is along the western flank of the ancient Monument Valley-Monticello upland, an area that was slightly uplifted at the beginning and again at the end of deposition of the Shinarump. Erosion and subsequent reworking of the Shinarump sediments in the vicinity of this upland are postulated to have made possible the transportation, in solution, of the uranium contained in these sediments. The soluble uranium probably was carried by migrating ground water into sites favorable for precipitation in Shinarump beds bordering the upland. Thus, the original very small amounts of dispersed uranium in the early Shinarump sediments were accreted in the favorable belt where the accumulations of carbonaceous plant remains and their decay products provided a persistent reducing environment.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducts research at the Galena Mine, Wallace, ID, with the aim of mitigating the effects of rock bursting. Destress blasting is commonly used as a stress control technique at the mine. A digital seismic array and an array of borehole pressure cells (BPC's) had been installed near the site of a stope undergoing mining and periodic de stressing. The instrumentation was being monitored at the time of a destress blast of the 46-99 stope. No significant seismic events occurred coincident with the destress. However, the destress was followed by a 2 ½ -week period of increased seismic activity, including two damaging events on February 7, 1990, at 034500 (hour, minute, and second) and 122020 Pacific standard time. BPC measurements indicated coseismic ground pressure changes on the order of 200 to 300 kPa associated with the damaging events. Fault plane solutions and dislocation models established that stress changes induced by the event at 034500 may have been significant in promoting the occurrence of the event at 122020. Theoretical investigations suggest that applying knowledge of the existing stress field, an understanding of rock burst mechanics, and fracture mechanics principles can improve destress effectiveness.

I. INTRODUCTION. DURING the last twenty years or so the chemical investigation of rocks has made great advances, and it is now generally recognized that a knowledge of the chemical composition is as essential as that of the texture or mineral composition-if not more so-for the proper classification of rocks and study of their origin and relationships. Rock-analyses have vastly increased in numbers and, what is of greater importance, in quality. New and improved methods permit of greater accuracy than was possible in the early days, and the list of chemical constituents frequently determined has risen from the seven or eight of the greater part of the nineteenth century to twenty or more. Indeed, rock-analyses with determinations of so many constituents are now commonly made by the chemists of the United States and Australia, while in Germany, Great Britain, France, and Italy the rarer constituents are determined more frequently than formerly. As a consequence of this modern, accurate work, it has been discovered that some elements which were formerly supposed to be rare are of wide-spread occurrence and are often present in considerable amount. The fact is further being developed that the elements tend to show certain relations of occurrence or abundance in connection with each other. This is a fact which is applicable to the rarer elements, and which also finds a broad geological and petrological expression in the recognition of petrographic provinces. We are beginning to obtain some definite, though as yet rudimentary, knowledge of the distribution of the elements among igneous rocks. This report presents the results of an investigation conducted by the Bureau of Mines for the purpose of assisting in the establishment of a satisfactory standard method for the analytical distillation of petroleum, a problem of great importance to the petroleum industry. Experiments were performed for the purpose of studying the charac- teristics of methods typical of those in use; comparative studies were made of the efficiencies of the principal types of fractionation ap- paratus available to the petroleum chemist; and the characteristics of a type of apparatus that the results of the experiments seemed to indicate was best adapted to the purpose were investigated in detail. Also, some experiments were made to determine the effect of cracking as a factor in the analytical distillation of petroleum in still heads.

It is the purpose of this paper to examine a number of the recent developments in powder metallurgy, being most concerned with those which are yet to prove themselves rather than those which have achieved commercial maturity. Such developments include the production of very much coarser and very much finer powders, down to the near-micron size range. Also considered are activated sintering, direct powder rolling and extrusion (both hot and cold), brazing and welding, hydrides of reactive metals, oxide dispersion strengthened alloys and theoretical evaluations. Introduction T HERE surely can't be very much argument with the fact that powder metallurgy has made large advances on many fronts during the past ten or more years (1). These advances have taken place in raw materials, in processing, in product development and in a better understanding of many of the phenomena which occur in the various steps involved in powder metallurgy. A number of problems that developed in processing the halloysitic clays of eastern Washington and northern Idaho were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. The deflocculating effect of tetra sodium pyrophosphate is compared with several other compounds, and on the basis of current theory, the advantage of sodium pyrophosphate as a deflocculating agent is explained. The adsorption of the sodium ion by clay in a clay"-water system was established by a radioactive tracer technique, and the deflocculating action of sodium pyro- phosphate was postulated. The effective dispersion of the halloysitic clays was limited by the occurrence of tightly bound aggregates of small, individual crystals. Disaggregation of the agglomerates was investigated by liquid extrusion and ball milling of dilute slurries and by extrusion of the clay in a plastic state. The greatest increase in the production of small particles was by high? pressure liquid extrusion.

"Excessive wear rates on railway wheels can result in rolling-stock derailments. If wear is detected early the possible derailments can be prevented by prematurely replacing wheelsets, although the inventory cost and maintenance downtime remain a challenge. In the current study, wheels were introduced and monitored in-service for two years to investigate the cause of excessive wear rates. The wear rates and stresses were calculated for the wheels suitable for a maximum load of 26 t per axle. Microstructural and mechanical properties were analysed. As expected, the general microstructure of all the wheels tested was pearlitic. Although all the wheels complied with the tensile strength requirements, stress calculations confirmed material distortion on excessively worn wheels whereas trial wheels revealed yield strength exceeding the yield criterion. High wear rates observed on the wheels were a result of low yield strength relative to the load per axle. The typical wear mechanism found was due to a combination of rolling contact fatigue and abrasive brake wear. Despite compliance of the wheels with existing requirements regarding material and mechanical properties (hardness, ultimate tensile strength), it is recommended that the yield strength must also be taken into consideration as a critical parameter.IntroductionRailway wheels are used to support the wagon mass and guide the wagon along the tracks (Park, 1974). The wheels and rails must be able to tolerate the applied tangential forces in order to effect wagon dynamic performance and reduce material deformation (Ghidini et al., 1994; RSE_TE_SPC_0045, 2011; AAR M107/M 208 Specification, 2011. Over the past ten years, the South African coal wagon maintenance depot has experienced excessive hollow wheel wear rates on the heavy haul line wheels. The maximum load of Jumbo wagons on the coal line is 104 t, or 26 t per axle. Although the maintenance intervention cycle for wheelsets was two years, between February 2011 and August 2012 some wheels experienced excessive hollow wear. Hollow wear is regarded as wear exceeding 2 mm on the central portion of the wheel tread (RSE_TE_SPC_0045, 2011). This happened despite the fact that these wheels were manufactured and certified according to the requirements of AAR M107/208 standard for carbon steel wheels (AAR M107/M 208 Specification,. 2011) and the local wheel RS/ME/SP 021 standard specification (RS / ME / SP / 021 REV 5 (2013). The AAR standard only specifies a minimum hardness as a required mechanical property and the local standard specifies hardness and minimum tensile strength only. In general, an increase in hardness will improve the rolling/sliding wear resistance of steel. This relationship of hardness and wear resistance was found to be true only in a situation where solid and similar alloys are in contact (Singh, Khatirkar and Sapate, 2015). The sliding wear resistance of a material is usually estimated using Archard’s equation (Liu and Li, 2001)."

IF you have ever travelled in the valley lying between the Selkirks and the Rockies in the East Koorenay district, you will have noted that the former mountains are rounded and massive, while the serrated peaks of the latter, fingering into the sky, bring an entirely different. picture. These two mountain ranges, with the comparatively level valley between, serve splendidly to introduce the subject for discussion. It is rather strange that, despite the fact that wear is undoubredly the greatest force with which human ingenuity bas to contend, it has come in for very little study from the stand point of pure science. Empiricism has been the sole ally in the fight for improvement! That we may have a clear understanding as to what we mean by wear, I would include in the term the breaking dawn of ail solid matter, from the natural wearing dawn of the mountains previously mentioned, to the hale in the mill pipe-line, which forces one to shut-down-usually at some un-earthly hour-to carry out a repair. It seems a far cry from mountains to mill launders or pipe-lines, but, magnified sufficiently, most of the materials with which we have to deal would show surfaces not unlike those we see around us. The progressive steps of wear, or ?erosion' as our geological friends would prefer to term it, are exemplified in the two ranges of mountains and the valley between. True, the wearing dawn by natural forces is a slow process. The aeons which have passed since first these mountains were formed seem endless. The natural forces pitted against them seem puny in the light of the interminable rime that has been needed to effect the changes. But here, as in the case of the materials with which we are dealing day by day, the combination of many forces ultimately brings about that condition which we describe as 'worn out'. In the case of the mountains, it is when they are finally levelled into plains, and in the case of equipment which we use, it is when that equipment will no longer serve its purpose.
