The greatly extended use of the underground trolley-locomotive system for hauling coal without doubt was one of the most important factors in the rapid progress of coal mining and the increased production of coal in American coal mines during the period 1910-20. Much of the superior efficiency of production of our underground coal and metal lines should also be credited to the trolley locomotive system. The trend to mechanization of mines during the past 15 years, mere particularly the past 5 years, with higher production per man employed and greatly accelerated advancement of working places, has required increased use of trolley locomotives, necessitating larger equipment, higher speeds, and more 'frequent turn over of pit cars. This is re¬flected in increased size of locomotives and the use of larger mine ears (some with a capacity up to or over 10 tons); moreover, heavier rails and larger-size trolley wires have boon or ought to have boon installed. Trolley-locomotive haulage has proved to be rapid; economical, efficient, and productive; nevertheless; in spite of these advantages, so-many hazardous features and, unsafe conditions are involved and the price paid in life and property is so high as to justify the statement that the system should be scrapped if it cannot be operated under reasonably safe conditions. Since bare trolloy wires were introduced into underground mines, they have boon responsible for the death of hundreds of diners, property damage totaling millions of dollars, an indeterminate loss of tonnage through the abandonment of mines or parts of mines, and loss of time after disasters caused by fires or explosions originated by the trolley haulage system.

Safety remains a critical priority for the Australian mineral resource industry and will receive increased focus in the future. This is particularly evident in underground coal mines where reserves are becoming deeper and more hazardous to extract. The CSIRO, through its Exploration and Mining Division, have recently delivered on two projects aimed at providing step-change capabilities in real-time risk management and hazard control. This paper describes the key outcomes of these projects.

This Bureau of Mines report reviews the development of the world potash industry. The trends leading to the present market situation of oversupply arid low prices, which threaten; the domestic potash industry, are presented and analyzed. Because the major threat to the domestic industry comes from Canadian imports, the report focuses on the comparative economics of United States and Canadian production. The study resulted in these major conclusions: 1. Balance of world supply and demand is foreseeable in 1975, but it could be delayed by planned expansion. 2. Balance of U.S. supply and demand could occur as early as 1974-75 or as late as 1981. 3. Nearly all U. S. production capacity vis-a-vis Canadian competition is now uneconomic. Prices cover out-of -pocket costs for only 30 percent of U.S. production. 4. U.S. producers will be undersold by Canadians in 60 to 90 percent of the U.S. market. Canadians also will have the edge over United States and European producers in export markets. 5. U.S. firms have invested in 60 percent of the planned 1971 Canadian production, and they have large holdings in Saskatchewan. 6. The decline in the U.S. potash industry probably reduced personal income in Carlsbad, Eddy County, N. Mex, the chief potash-producing area in the United States, about $21.5 million between 1966 and 1969.

COMPRESSED air has been and is still very extensively used in connection with mining-operations, but its application in the past has been almost entirely confined to supplying power to underground machinery. Its introduction was due to the difficulty of taking care of the steam which is exhausted underground, rather than to any advantage in efficiency to be gained by its use. The ease with which electric power may be carried to the remotest parts of the mine and the high efficiency of the electric motor have long been appreciated by mine-operators, and electric power is now extensively used underground in the more recent developments, while many of the compressed-air engines in the older workings are being rapidly replaced by electric motors. Recently, however, it has been suggested to use compressed air for driving the large shaft-hoists, the air for the engines being supplied by electrically-driven compressors, and an installation of this character is being erected at Butte; Mont. It is the object of this paper to compare the compressed-air system of hoisting with the various electrical systems, from the stand-points of first-cost and cost of operation. However, before entering into a discussion of the various systems, it will be well to consider briefly the conditions affecting the choice of a system of hoisting in which electricity is the ultimate source of power. The power required by a mine-hoist is extremely intermittent and fluctuates between very wide limits, the all-day average consumption of power not exceeding from 5 to 15 per cent. of the maximum demand during hoisting. "The theoretical melting energy requirement for a typical hypoeutectic aluminum-silicon alloy is approximately 520 BTU/lb. It has been demonstrated, however, that even a state of the art secondary processing-automated lost foam casting operation can exceed this value by at least an order of magnitude when the actual thermal energy input from melting to solidification is monitored. Metal transfer and holding operations constitutes over 65% of this expenditure. The authors present relative benchmark energy expenditure information by unit operation for an offsite melting/lost foam casting line with a daily throughput in excess of 100,000 lbs. Efficiency improvements through optimization of the current process, and anticipated energy values at the culmination of a U.S. Department of Energy sponsored project to develop, integrate and demonstrate an advanced melting, transportation, and dispensation system will be cited.IntroductionThe size of the U.S. aluminum remelt pool was approximated to be 14.21 billion kg (31.27 billion pounds) by a recent study?, with the engineered castings (foundry) sector accounting for 3.25 billion kg (7.16 billion pounds) or 23% of that total. This study considered overall process yield and all major contributors to scrap. The values cited, therefore, are more meaningful than simply tabulating annual pounds shipped by sector.The foundry sector consists of Sand Castings, PM Castings and Die Castings categories appearing in Figure 1. All other categories comprise the wrought alloy sector. Wrought alloy production enjoys an energetic benefit from both scale and a relatively continuous operation. Many foundry operations, however, operate in batch mode at less than design metal throughput with characteristically longer melt holding periods. Since any detention of molten metal beyond melting represents an overhead use of energy, melt holding (secondary) energy expenditures can appreciably inflate melting energy requirements in the foundry."

Mine waste and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, the government and the general public. This publication and its companion volume are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, April 19-21, 1988. There were nine sessions (50 papers) that dealt with the geochemistry, hydrology and problems of mine waste and mine water, especially acid mine drainage. These comprise Volume 1. The nine sessions (43 papers) that dealt with reclamation and restoration of disturbed lands, as well as related policy issues, are included in volume 2. Volume 2 also contains the ten papers that pertained to control of subsidence and mine fires at abandoned mines. Poster session presentations are, in general, represented by abstracts; these have been placed in the back of both volumes.

"Background The preponderance of Canada's coal resources is located in areas remote from high demand domestic users and at some significant distances from deepsea ports. This places great demands on the transportation system and has forced the coal and the transportation industries to adopt highly efficient methods of handling the product and hauling it to market position. Most of the coal not consumed in minemouth thermal power stations is carried by rail over lines operated by the two transcontinental railway systems, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific. These rail networks are extensive and have the advantage (as compared to most other North American railways) of being able to handle coal movements from origin through to destination without interchange to other rail carriers. Coal SourcesWith exception of the coal produced in Cape Breton, Nova iScotia, all the significant shipping volumes in Canada emanate ifrom mines located in the three most westerly provinces. Figure I ishows the geographic distribution of the major mining operaitions shipping coal to domestic and export markets. The prinicipal routes and the tonnages carried (1980 calendar year) are ialso indicated. iThe 1980 shipping data are summarized in Table I. Saskatchewan lignite began moving from Bienfait to Thunder Bay by CP Rail unit trains in mid-1981 at the rate of one million tonnes per year. The product is handled through Thunder Bay Terminals and delivered directly to a nearby Ontario Hydro electrical generating station."

Foreign mining publications describing successful hydraulic mining installations, and successful domestic hydraulic mining in a gilsonite bed, have prompted the Federal Bureau of Mines to conduct a literature survey of foreign publications to determine if the hydraulic mining method can be applied to domestic coal mining. Most foreign publications do not give detailed data about the water pressures, water capacities, and production and manpower requirements for successful hydraulic mining, However, they do provide enough general data on mining conditions, manpower, and equipment used to show that conditions in many bituminous coal deposits in the United States may be favorable for economical coal extraction, using high-pressure water jets. Therefore, the Bureau proposes to conduct a field investigation to determine the most appropriate natural conditions, water pressures, and equipment for successful hydraulic mining of coal beds in the United States with variable dip, thickness, and hardness. In the past, technical personnel reviewing foreign mining reports assumed that a steeply pitching coal bed was necessary for successful hydraulic mining. Although the structure of the coal bed may be a factor in gaining assistance from overburden pressures or help in an integrated hydraulic mining and transportation system, the coal is broken mainly by the action of high-pressure, water-penetrating cracks, fissures, or cleats; therefore, the slope of the coal bed is not necessarily a determining factor in hydraulic mining.

Likewise, its iconic yellow bulldozers are at mine sites the world over — the company recently announced the sale of its 40,000th large dozer. And since its acquisition of Bucyrus in 2011, Caterpillar has positioned itself to become a worldwide leader in the underground mining sector as well.But don’t think that the company is resting on its reputation. As evidence of its commitment to the global mining sector, as well as its confidence in the future of mining, Caterpillar invited mining trade press, including Mining Engineering, to its Tinaja Hills Training Center near Tucson, AZ in November to introduce the latest editions to its mining portfolio. The two-day event focused mostly on the newest electric drive haul trucks, the Cat 796 AC, which will operate in the 326-t (360-st) class, and the 798 AC in the 360 t (400 st) weight class.Caterpillar representatives also spoke about new offerings in the underground space as well as the newest version of the D11 large dozer.“It has been 10 years since we launched the F Series,” Jean Savage, Caterpillar’s vice president, surface mining and technology said. “Since then, we have been on a journey to serve our mining customers and we wanted to have trucks in every application. Today, we are launching two new trucks that will allow us to fill out our portfolio.”While Caterpillar previously offered the broadest range of off-highway haul trucks to the mining industry, it was noticeably absent from the 326-t (360- st) and 360-t (400-st) weight classes."

This report is the 20th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations; it is the second4/ to be issued on a calendar-year basis. Previous reports related largely to publications by Bureau authors during the reporting period. This one discusses the publications issued during 1955 and in addition describes briefly the work in progress during the year. Further details on the published work may be found by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes. The Bureau continues to direct its research and technologic work on coal toward safer and more efficient mining, improved preparation, and more effective utilization, with the ultimate twin goals of promoting conservation and insuring that coal will make its maximum contribution to the Nation's industrial capacity. Significant advances toward these goals were made in 1955.

Tramp (undesirable) elements introduced into iron and steel castings via purchased ferrous scrap are evaluated as to their likely degree of future threat to the quality of castings. Conclusions are based on analysis of literature and on nonmail surveys of foundries, scrap processors, trade and technical associations, and others. The existing tramp-element problem is expected to be persistent, but amenable to improved control by foundries and their suppliers. Four recommendations for action are given.

ORES PROCESS OF ORE CONCENTRATION-PATENTABILITY. The patent issued to Sulman, Pickard, and Ballot, November 6, 1905, and assigned to Minerals Separation and Minerals Separation American Syndicate, for new and useful improvements in ore concen- tration, its object being to separate metalliferous matter from gangue by means of oils and fatty acids that have a preferential affinity for such metalliferous matter, the principal feature of which is "agitat- ing the mixture to cause the oil-coated mineral to form a froth," was clearly anticipated by other patents, and each step in the process described in the Sulman, Pickard, and Ballot patent is fully described in more than one of the prior patents, with the single exception of the reduced quantity of oil used; but the discovery that the small fraction of oil is sufficient to produce flotation of the metalliferous matter can not be made by itself or in combination, the subject of a patent. Technical problems associated with the cleanup of historic mines are not new. Nor are they unique to the mining industry or the governmental agencies addressing them. Both face the same issues and challenges of defining the problems, evaluating remediation options and finding the most economic and effective solutions.

Work has been carried out under Bureau of Mines Contract HO 395132 to develop improved sensor cells for use in direct-reading detectors and diffusion exposure meters. A pumped CO sensor cell was developed which has a shorter response time, improved temperature cycle characteristics, and improved linearity and stability at high CO concentrations. Diffusion CO sensor cells have shown good response level stability and linearity up to 1000 ppm. In addition, a new sensor cell catalyst has been developed for NO2 sensor cells which has a much shorter response time and improved response stability characteristics.

The 1963 Lignite Symposium was held on the University of North Dakota campus, Grand Forks, N. Dak., April 30-May 1, 1963, under the cosponsorship of the University of North Dakota and the Bureau of Mines. This symposium, the third in a series, had as a general objective the dissemination of information concerning advances in technology and utilization of solid fuels, with emphasis on lignitic coals. Approximately 150 representatives of industry, government, and educational institutions from 21 states and 3 Canadian provinces were present at the symposium. Those attending were welcomed by Marling J. Ankeny, Director of the Bureau of Mines, representing the Bureau, and Dean T. H. Clifford, Vice President of the University, representing the University.

Design plans and detailed cost estimates of mining and treating ore from Maggie Canyon deposit by two alternative methods which can be used in the event of a sudden need to exploit this resource are given . Lower costs are estimated for the operation employing oil - emulsion flotation . The total capital investment required for this operation is estimated at $ 11,750,000 . Assuming an 85 percent recovery in mining , 55.6 pct of the manganese in the ore reserve would report in 153,333 tons of ferromanganese containing 75 pct manganese . The production cost for the 5 - year operation would be about $ 245 per ton of ferromanganese . The total annual operating cost would be approximately $ 7.5 million , distributed , in pct , as follows : Mining 11.9 , milling 24.4 , sintering 9.9 , smelting 47.2 , hauling ore and sinter 2.8 , and general offices 3.8 . Recovery and costs are both higher for the operation employing dithionate leaching . In this operation the required investment is about $ 17,220,000 . Manganese recovery would be 67.6 pct in 186,160 tons of ferromanganese . Production cost would be about $ 284 per ton of ferromanganese . The total annual operating cost would be about $ 10,575,000 , distributed , in pct , as follows : Mining 8.4 , milling 44.4 , sintering 7.4 , smelting 34.7 , hauling ore and sinter 1.3 , and general offices 3.8 . Potential process modifications might reduce the operating cost of the first operation by as much as 7 pct and that of the second operation by as much as 9.5 pct , but exploitation of the deposit by the techniques studied is not economical today .

This report describes the development of a system which modifies an existing fly ash-foam remote mine sealing technique to make it capable of impounding water in a fire zone. The modification involves blending equal quantities of fly ash and bentonite to form the bulk of the seal, and blending a thin layer of fly ash and Huron Regulated Set Portland Cement (RSPC) as a coating. The modification replaces the pure fly ash approach, but continues to use a froth foam topping to complete the seal. The modified material system is implemented with minimal complexity by adapting a "Y" connector to the existing delivery system. Each bulk hauler (fly ash and bentonite, or RSPC) will pump into one leg of the 'Y'; and the blending will be controlled by two pinch valves. The development effort has involved an evaluation of potential material systems by using small sample, quarter scale, and full head tests. The small sample tests measured the basic properties of a large number of selected material combinations. Property measurements included capillarity, permeability, shrinkage, and shear strength. As a result of these tests, particular combinations of fly ash-bentonite and fly ash-cement were selected for scale model testing in a 1 /4 scale test facility. These tests simulated, in a scaled manner, the water rise and total head which would be experienced by a seal. The tests indicated that shrinkage in the fly ash-cement combination would always result in leakage; whereas, fly ash-bentonite mixes were impervious to water.

We are indebted to the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited for the several pictures in this issue showing the progress made in new construction at Tadanac and at Bonnington Falls, B.C. Plate No. 1 shows the down-stream side of the No. 1 hydro-electric station of the West Kootenay Power and Light Co. Limited at Bonnington Falls, on the Kootenay river, at which 17,500 k.v.a. will be developed to meet the requirements of the enlarged zinc and lead refineries at Tadanac. The generators, exciters and switch apparatus were supplied by the Canadian General Electric Company and the step-up transformers by the Canadian Westinghouse Company Limited. The plant throughout was designed, manufactured and erected by Canadians. Plate No. 2 shows the casting room of the new lead-plant and plate No. 3 the new tank-room of the electrolytic lead refinery at Tadanac. These additions will increase the capacity of the lead refinery by some 150 tons daily. The extensions also include practically doubling the zinc plant, and the gold and silver refineries. With the exception of the new stack, all designing construction and installation of the various plants is being done by the Company's own employees at Tadanac. Plate No. 4 shows the progress made in the construction of the new reinforced concrete stack at Tadanac. This stack, of 21 feet inside diameter at the top, will be brick lined and when completed will rise 400 feet above its foundations: the tallest of its kind in the world. The construction is in charge of the Rust Engineering Company of Pittsburgh, Pa. Plate No. 5 is a panorama of the Tadanac smelters and refineries. The photograph was taken from the roof of the lead smelter and gives an excellent idea of the size of the plant and its surroundings. Tadanac produces electrolytic lead, zinc and copper and fine gold and silver. During 1924 the company treated 1,333,523 tons of ore and produced: 161,400,- 769 pounds of lead; 92,197,824 pounds of zinc; l,382,750pounds of copper; 4,074,044 ounces of silver, and 26,976 ounces of gold.
