This report on research and experimentation by the Federal Bureau of Mines on technologic and scientific problems of the petroleum and natural gas industries presents a resume of work from July 1, 1953, to June 30, 1956. The preceding report, for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1953,3/ indicated continuation of the Bureau's program of petroleum and natural gas research of world-wide significance, which began in 1910. The petroleum and natural gas research of the Bureau of Mines is divided into five main categories: (1) Production of petroleum and natural gas, (2) transportation and storage, (3) petroleum chemistry and refining, (4) thermodynamics, and (5) economics.

One of the most notable achievements of the iron and steel industry in the United States in this century has been the general increase in productivity of individual blast furnaces and the reduction in coke rate. Most of the improvement in furnace operations has occurred within the past decade. During this time the output of the average furnace increased about one-third, while fuel rates decreased from 15 to 20 percent. For example, in 1949, the iron and steel industry produced 811.2 short tons of pig iron per blast-furnace day with a coke rate of 1,870.4 pounds per ton of pig iron, By 1960, the average production of pig iron per blast-furnace day had risen to 1,182.4 tons, while the coke rate had decreased to 1,497 pounds per ton of pig iron. These figures are averages for the entire industry; many furnaces produced over 2,000 tons per day and one furnace, operating on pellets, reached 2,700 tons of pig iron per day, Coke rates of individual furnaces varied, but some furnaces operated on less than 1,200 pounds per ton of pig iron. The significance of this decrease in coke rate is shown clearly when data on pig-iron production and coke consumption in 1959 are compared with 1948. In 1948, 57.3 million short tons of coke was charged into blast furnaces to produce 60.1 million tons of pig iron; in 1959 only 47.6 million tons of coke was needed to produce 60.2 million tons of pig iron. Thus, in 1959, nearly 10 million tons less coke was required to produce about the same amount of pig iron as was produced in 1948.

MINExpo INTERNATIONL 2000 was a good place for companies to introduce new products, technologies and services to the mining industry. Caterpillar took that a step further. The company hosted a one-day preview of its mining products at its Tinaja Hills Training and Demonstration Center near Tucson, AZ. About 30 members of the trade press spent the day at Tinaja Hills before heading on to Las Vegas for MINExpo INTERNATIONAL 2000. Dozens of Caterpillar professionals provided the editors with a first-hand look at Caterpillar’s mining trucks, loaders, excavators, road graders, water trucks and engines. In addition, these Cat experts explained the intricacies of each piece of equipment, the latest technology that led their improvement and their value to the company’s mining customers.

Roof failures in underground coal mines are related to the lithology and geologic structure of the roof. There are two distinct suites of roof rock above the Herrin (No. 6) Coal in Illinois, and each has distinctive patterns of structure and roof failure. In black shale-limestone roof areas, roof instability is correlated with thinning of limestone beds and presence of faults and clay dikes. In gray shale roof regions, the prime roof hazards are posed by rolls, shear bodies, and presence of coal or carbonaceous partings in the roof. Most structural features examined are believed to have formed during early stages of sediment diagenesis and compaction. Structural trends and lithologic patterns are strongly interdependent for this reason. In many cases geologic patterns are so complex and locally variable that prediction of roof stability far in advance of mining is difficult. The need for greater flexibility in roof control planning is apparent.

Geotechnical instrumentation has been implemented as a key step for monitoring and optimising an engineered mine design for managing seismicity at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine. Measurements of displacement, stress change, ground control element load and seismic response of the rock mass allow for back analysis and calibration of critical parameters for feedback into the engineering design loop. Instrument clusters are installed in strategic locations prior to the commencement of stoping in order to determine the nature of the response of the rock mass to stoping. A selection of instruments including instrumented cable bolts and rod extensometers, resistance wire extensometers, hollow inclusion stress cells, vibrating wire stress meters and resistance wire extensometers are used to gather data through a data logging system. The rate at which data is recorded is adjusted to provide more information during periods of anticipated rapid change such as around stope firings or during periods of high seismic activity, and less information during periods of anticipated quiescence. The twofold purpose of the instrumentation is to calibrate the numerical modelling output which forms the basis of the engineered mine design, and to provide an alert mechanism where the behaviour of the rock mass is not what was anticipated, or where the impact of that behaviour may compromise the integrity of the engineered ground control system. The paper describes the location of instrument clusters with respect to stoping, the type of instruments employed and the method of data acquisition. It provides examples of results obtained and illustrates the way in which that information is used to optimise the mine design and manage seismicity.

"Inco Metals Ltd. (Manitoba Division) operates a mining, milling, smelting and refining complex, 500 miles north of Winnipeg in central Manitoba. The Thompson Mill is presently operating at 12,000 S.T.P.D. on ore from both underground and open pit mines. The ore is treated in two separate milling and flotation circuits utilizing a common crushing system which is located inside the main mill building. The milling facility employs approximately 43 operating employees, 30 maintenance employees and 20 staff in supervisory or process development roles.In recent years an increasing awareness of the potential hazards of contaminants in the work place has made it mandatory that all employers maintain careful and accurate records of the work environment to which each employee has been exposed during his working career.The importance of this record keeping and general observation of the work place cannot be over emphasized. Proper monitoring of the work place provides an accurate and complete record of the contaminants and physical agents to which an employee is exposed during his work career. This can aid in studies which might be conducted in the future and can also be used as a basis for instituting improvements to the workplace."

Bench-scale flotation tests were conducted on two western tactite ores to study the recovery of tungsten and zinc minerals. The investigation, which is part of the Bureau of Mines ongoing program to develop methods for beneficiating minerals and metals from domestic low-grade ores, demonstrated the feasibility of producing scheelite, sphalerite, and their bulk concentrates. Sphalerite concentrates containing 51 to 53 pet Zn and less than 0.11 pct W03 were selectively recovered prior to scheelite flotation. Zinc recovery ranged from 85 to 91 pct. Scheelite concentrates containing 17 to 25 pct W03 were then recovered from the ore; tungsten recoveries ranged from 88 to 94 pct. Bulk flotation concentrates containing 84 to 91 pct of the W03 and 87 to 95 pct of the zinc also were prepared. More than 98 pct of the W03 in a bulk concentrate containing 9 pct W03 was extracted by autoclave leaching with a soda solution. The zinc remained in the leached residue.

Five full-scale pile load tests were performed on pairs of PZ-22 sheet piles installed with a vibratory pile driving hammer. The sheet piling was installed in several locations in soil generally consisting of miscellaneous granular fills overlying soft organic silts, inorganic silt interbedded with sands and gravels, very dense glacial till and shale bedrock. The test program also included the use of tip tell tales to determine what capacity could be attributed to tip resistance and skin friction. During the design phase of the project, it was assumed that the capacity of the sheet piles driven with the vibratory hammer could be correlated with the rate of penetration. The correlation between vertical capacity and rate of penetration would be used as a basis for determination of a driving criteria from driving the production sheet piling. The sheet piling load tests demonstrated that it was not possible to correlate the capacity of sheet piling driven with a vibratory hammer and the rate of penetration. It was also demonstrated that the capacity of the sheet piles was directly related to the density of the soil at or just below the tip. The results also tend to agree with empirical equations provided by Meyerhof (1976).

"A dynamic computer model has been developed to simulate the operation of ore crushing plants. The model was created in a general form to allow imitation of a wide variety of secondary crushing circuits with only minor program modifications. The system can be run on either a microcomputer or a large time-sharing main frame computer as required.The size reduction and separation characteristics of crushers and screens are based on standard manufacturers' design and performance data. These calculations are isolated within various subroutines to facilitate tailoring of the model to emulate any particular plant of interest. Input and output data are presented in a variety of formats. Crusher, screen and conveyor amperages and surge bin levels can be presented in a tabular form along with appropriate alarms arising from improper circuit operation or process interruptions. Graphical representation of the circuit together with strip chart data output are features of the system when operated in a microcomputer environment.The program is currently being used at Queen's University as a teaching aid to demonstrate plant operating characteristics, control strategies and design concepts. The acceptance of, and reaction to the program at this level indicates a good potential for it to provide a valuable tool for operator training."

An evaluation of a nuisance-emissions-discriminating smart mine fire sensor system was made in an operating coal mine. These field evaluations were conducted to determine the sensor system?s ability to discern nuisance emissions, such as diesel exhaust, emissions from flame cutting and welding operations or hydrogen gas from a charging station, from real fires and to compare the number of falsely reported fire alarms generated between the sensor system and a standard carbon monoxide (CO) monitor. The sensor system?s ability to operate successfully in the working environment of an operating coal mine was also evaluated. The smart mine fire sensor system consisted of four sensors whose data outputs were fused with the use of a neural-network-type computer program. Long-term trials were conducted in a haulage way, a belt entry, and a track entry. The system functioned successfully in the belt entry, in accordance with its developmental goals, where the sensor system even discriminated events not anticipated during development. It was not totally effective in the haulage way and track entry, though, due to a combination of significant diurnal air temperature variations, dust, and mechanically induced vibrations. Also, deteriorating rib conditions contributed to operational problems in the haulage way evaluation. In general, the smart mine fire sensor provided nuisance emissions discrimination and was shown to be a viable new approach for mine atmospheric monitoring, enhancing miner safety. This paper describes the in-mine evaluation of the smart mine fire sensor system and discusses recommendations for improving the system. In this paper is presented a review of the changes that have taken place in certain Canadian non-metallic mineral industries since 1909. The fifteen-year period 1909 to 1923, inclusive, has been selected for two reasons. In the first place, statistical treatment of the subject under review has been nearly uniform throughout the period. In the second place, this decade and a half is itself further subdivisible into three well marked quinquennial periods, the middle one covering the period of the great war when industrial conditions were greatly disturbed. It then becomes possible to institute certain comparisons between equal periods before and after the war disturbances. The items selected for inclusion in this review are certain of the more important members of that class of minerals usually grouped together under the heading of non-metallics. They are all minerals of which Canada is known to possess important resources, and which are indispensable to many of our greatest manufacturing industries.

ONLY two of the Institute's 26 Local Sections were unrepresented at the delegates' three sessions, held on Monday morning and afternoon and Thursday afternoon of the annual meeting. The Philadelphia and Wyoming Sections alone sent no delegates. In all, seven hours were spent most profitably in reviewing the work done by the Institute at headquarters and in the field, comparing ideas and practices in varied activities, and in establishing personal contacts. Cordiality and the co¬operative spirit marked the meeting and apparently no one had any serious grievances to air. Four motions were introduced and unanimously passed. The first, which was introduced by B. L. Sackett, was a recommendation by the delegates that a national committee be appointed to cooperate with Local Sections in the matter of student activities, to promote Institute welfare. It was agreed that this recommendation be made simultaneously to the Board of Directors and to the Mineral Industry Education Division. A subsequent resolution by A. M. Smith was passed asking that a part of the duties of this committee be to secure the opinions of Local Sections as to the most desirable methods of interesting students in the preparation of technical papers, by giving prizes or otherwise, and to report their findings at the Section Delegates' meeting next year.

In the 1980s and?90s the gold mining industry in South Africa came under pressure from the continued poor dollar gold price and escalating Rand based costs, furthermore the external impacts on the industry were changing. Thus, the Chamber of Mines (COM) shifted its focus away from many historical areas of support towards the new industry challenges in safety and health, labour markets, environmental responsibility, mineral rights legislation and social responsibility. During 1997 the lack of funds and the changes facing the tertiary institutions were often subjects of discussion at the various sub-committee meetings. The Metallurgical Sub-committee of the Chamber Education Fund or the Sub-committee of Consulting Metallurgists as it was known identified the need for the funding structure to change with the times. Up to this time the Chamber of Mines operated an Education Fund that supported mining industry academic departments at various South African tertiary institutions; these funds were derived exclusively from the country?s gold and coal mines the basis of Chamber membership. Funds of less than R5 million per annum were available for distribution by the three disciplinary sub-committees of mining, metallurgy and geology.

Coal is increasingly viewed as one of the major fuel resources of this country for the remainder of this century. The need to extract a greater percentage of the coal in a given seam, together with advantages of improved safety, indicates that longwall mining will become more widely used within this time frame. A novel method of mining coal on a longwall face, utilizing high pressure water jets, is herein described. The mining machine proposed will exploit the stress conditions which exist on a longwall panel in order to achieve the required productivity while at the same time reducing respirable dust and methane ignition hazards. The water jets will excavate only the boundary of the extracted seam section, and thus the energy requirement of the machine will be minimized. The action of the machine is similar to that of an existing coal plow, except in that the wedge teeth of the plow are replaced by oscillating high pressure water jets. The machine can, therefore, cut to the depth and at the speed of existing shearer units at equivalent power levels. The removal of impact stresses from the machine will reduce downtime required for maintenance and replacement of picks and lower the load on the haulage motor of the system. The ability of the machine to increase the depth of cut without an increase in horsepower will further improve productivity when transportation systems to remove the greater production are in operation.

An investigation into the causes of variable sulphur content in blast furnace metal produced at No. 4 blast furnace at the Port Kembla works of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd. was carried out. Theprogramme included an extended and detailed experimental study of a great number of the operating variables of the furnace, on a cast-bycast or four-hourly basis, over fourteen days.Possible causes of the variation were found in irregular operation due to sinter variability, and it was also clearly shown that slag conditions were most important in controlling sulphur contents of pigiron. Some decrease in sulphur variability was achieved, arising partly from this investigation, and it is hoped to try magnesia additions to modify slag conditions for better desulphurizing.INTRODUCTIONSulphur in pig iron is a problem common to many blast furnace operators throughout the world, but the direct causes and means of overcoming them are functions of the available raw materials, and are hence more particular to each plant and its operating practice. Sulphur in hot metal influences the steel-making operations, the rolling operations and the quality of the finished steel. The main problem associated with high sulphur in steel is "hot shortness", which leads to cracking of ingots and billets in rolling, to poor surface finish and to poor welding properties in the finished steel. "The On-Stream Analyzer has proven and is still proving to be an extremely valuable tool for the control of flotation circuits. This paper examines the possibility of going further in the utilization of the provided assays using a real-time material balance program to calculate the distribution of solids within the streams of a circuit. Mass balance results can be used for process control, process analysis and detection of sensors malfunction. Examples from 3 Canadian and one American concentrators are presented to illustrate the potential of the method.IntroductionThe On-Stream Analyzer (OSA) has gained, over the last two decades, the status of key instrument for the control of flotation plants. The OSA is currently used in almost every sulphide flotation plant and its application in oxide mineral flotation plants is increasing. On-Stream Analyzers provide X-rays pulse counts that are converted into assays using multilinear regression programs. The estimated assays are passed to the flotation operators, via an operator console, or to control loops of various degrees of complexity (McKee, 1991) implemented in a Distributed Control System (DCS). Operators and/or controllers take control actions based on these assays to ensure an adequate operation of the plant. Although this application pays off very rapidly for the purchase of the OSA, one should ask: Could we get more from the OSA?Some plants reported the use of OSA measurements to process optimization (McKee, 1991). The optimization strategy is based upon economic indices calculated from metal recovery using the 2 product formulae (Wills, 1992, page 124). The 2 product formulae is however sensitive to measurement errors in the assays and can lead to considerable scatter in the calculated indices (Hodouin et al., 1993). Least squares algorithms provide an interesting alternative to filter out measurement errors (Spring, 1992). This paper presents a recursive least squares algorithm that estimates in a real time fashion the mass flow rates in a flotation plant using OSA and mass flow measurements. The algorithm is robust and its recursive structure is not demanding in terms of computation time and memory. The method was tested with data from four concentrators. Results of the material balance algorithm prove to be useful to detect sensors malfunction and may potentially be used for the control and optimization of flotation plants.The paper is divided into two sections. The first section gives a description of the proposed method. The mathematics of the method are kept to a minimum, since the detail is presented elsewhere (Bazin and Franklin, 1994). The second section shows the application of the method to different flotation plants."

"The steps from experimental curiosity through to commercial product can be slow and tortuous in spite of the quality of the technological advances offered by the new development. Data generation and interpretation need to be done in lab tests as well as full-scale evaluations and, in each, the advantages of the new reagent must be clearly identifiable and measurable.The Dow Chemical Company has patented a novel new collector for the flotation of zinc. Fl (2-hexylthioethylamine hydrochloride) has several unique structural features that suggest atypical mechanisms for zinc collection. Laboratory data have demonstrated significant flexibility with respect to grade and recovery balance at dosages lower than those typically used for xanthates.In mill trials, the same phenomanon is evident - the choice between high grade and high recovery allows one to select the desired quality of zinc concentrate. One trial in particular was run over a three month timeframe and Fl gave improvements in recovery of 2.5% and a reduction in lead levels with less than 0.5% loss in grade. The dosages of other reagents in the flotation circuit were also reduced.Data demonstrating improved recovery and grade in lab trials will be discussed. Extensive data from the mill trial will illustrate how Fl works in both rougher and cleaner circuits."

Industries in general and the mining industry in particular have become more safe than ever before. However, there is a need to increase the search for the causes of mining work-related injuries and to contribute to their reduction through job design, work procedures, and worker training. Mine accident and hazard control has to be practiced in a manner which is consistent with the overall objectives of the mine management, among which are the optimum allocation and effective utilization of the resources. The purposes of this paper are to (i) review the role risk analysis in safety management with references from mining and other industries; (ii) discuss the risk measures appropriate for injury analysis; (iii) present a set of analytical tools to injury experience data in under-ground coal mines; (i v) apply these tools on case study example; (v) discuss the results of the case study; and (vi) amplify the application limitations and the future research needs.

In the last two years the Commission for the Environment has received four Environmental Impact Reports (EIR) for Audit and has been or is involved with at least four environmental impact assessments (EIA) related to mining. The EIRs have included Weavers Coal Mine, the Monowai-Maratoto mining proposal, the Martha Hill mine and the Wainui Road Mill. The EIAs are related mainly to coal fields in the Waikato but also included a further EIA on Martha Hill.
