When Mr. Bailey asked us to present a paper describing our new BOF shop, he requested that we avoid a presentation heavily laden with detail and statistics. Not only have we attempted to do this, but also we have prepared a number of colour slides which, hopefully, will provide you with a graphic conception of the facility. The installation of the BOF facility at the Steel Co. of Canada's Hilton Works was delayed many years because of the remarkable production growth of the oxygen open hearth furnaces in No. 3 shop. However, in mid-1960 it became strongly evident that not only would increased ingot capacity be required, but also that N0.2 shop - with vintage non-oxygen open hearth furnaces - would have to clean its stacks in the near future, or be closed down. A decision to embark on the BOF facility was made in 1967 after an extended period of in-depth planning and assessment of industry trends.

This report describes the performance of 17 selected water-injection projects producing from Pennsylvanian-and Permian-age reservoirs. Illustrations depict reservoir structure and thickness, and production and injection history. A selected bibliography of publications pertaining to area oil recovery and geology is included. Tabulations of field and reservoir data reveal marked differences in the projects. Increased oil recovery resulted from injecting water in most cases; however, seven projects recovered less oil than the operators anticipated. Oil recovery by water injection ranged from 0.2 to 262 bbl per acre ft, or 0.1 to 22.5 pct of the initial stock-tank oil in place. Major reasons suggested for poor performance include: (1) Adverse directional horizontal permeability, (2) channeling of injected water through fractures or zones of high permeability, and (3) lack of containment of injected water. One 330-foot-deep project is among the first successful shallow water-floods in north Texas. Another project is the first successful Canyon sand-stone waterflood reported in the area. Previous gas injection in two Cisco sandstone projects did not prevent the reservoirs from responding favorably to waterflooding.

This paper deals with the construction of the Effluent Outfall Diffusers which form part of the outfall for the Deer Island sewage project. The work was executed 15 km out to sea in Massachusetts Bay and required the drilling, installation, grouting and accurate determination of the actual position of 55 riser shafts in 33.5 m deep water. Although not strictly a "foundation", the contractor's approach to the installation of the diffusers was a logical development from many marine foundation projects executed by the Contracting companies over the last decades. The only previous application of this design of outfall had been in Australia where offshore oil drilling techniques had been adapted for use in riser installation.

One of the major activities of the Bureau of Mines is the promotion of safety in mining and other industries, In this connection, the Bureau determines the explosion hazards' of combustible gases, vapors, and solids and investigates means of controlling and preventing explosions. Many dangers are likely to confront men who must enter a building immediately after it has been damaged. Rescue workers must watch constantly for common gases and vapors that may be present in dangerous concentrations in and about demolished, buildings. Fuel gas is the most common source of danger, although refrigerants, gases from furnaces, flues, fires, sewers, and industrial processes, and gas from bomb, explosions in confined places also constitute definite hazards. To rescuers and trapped casualties, these gases offer the hazards of (1) explosion, (2) toxic effects, including asphyxiation and death, and (3) displacement of air so that the oxygen content of the atmosphere is reduced to or below the danger level.

A series of four coal combustion experiments (I)' was conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory in the Safety Research Coal Mine to evaluate the response of optical and ionization smoke and CO sensors to a small 0.61 m square smoldering coal fire which transitions to flaming combustion in the presence of diesel emissions. With the increased utilization of diesel engines in underground coal mines, it is important to be able to discriminate fire products-of-combustion (POC) from diesel emissions. One proposed method to accomplish this is the deployment and interpretation of multiple sensors.

"Abstract The Deep Mixing Methods (DMM), in their current forms, have been employed in the United States since 1986, although an earlier version had seen service from 1954. The earlier developments were strongly influenced by practices in the Nordic countries and Japan, while by the late 1980’s several DMM systems had been developed in the U.S. itself. Since then, DMM has continued its evolution, principally via the challenges of a series of large, landmark projects, but also via distinct, significant technological advances. This paper highlights the key points in the history of DMM in the U.S., and provides an overview of the different methods currently in use.In the BeginningIt is a common misconception that the history of applications of the Deep Mixing Methods (DMM) in the United States dates from 1986 when SMW Seiko Inc. — a subsidiary of Japan’s Seiko Kogyo Company — was established in the Bay Area. However, the author believes that Intrusion Prepakt Co.’s patented MIP (Mixed in Place) system had been used, albeit sporadically (about 30 projects are recorded), since 1954 (FHWA 2000, 2001). Ironically, by 1961 this single auger method had been extensively used under license in Japan for excavation support and groundwater control — by the Seiko Kogyo Company. By 1972, the original MIP technique had been succeeded by more advanced Japanese methods, involving multiple augers. Intrusion Prepakt have long since become defunct.The first systematic studies of contemporary Deep Mixing Methods in Japan began in 1967 when the Port and Harbor Research Institute of the Ministry of Transportation began laboratory testing using granular and powdered lime for treating soft marine soils. Fundamental studies continued through the early 1970’s, by which time the development of industrial scale equipment was well advanced, having its first application on a marine trial near Haneda Airport. Coincidentally, laboratory and field research also began in 1967 in Sweden (“Swedish Lime Column Method”) for treating soft clays using unslaked lime. Reportedly the progenitor was a Norwegian, Kjeld Paus, who had made observations on fluid lime columns in the U.S. It would seem that developments in Japan and the Nordic countries proceeded independently until 1975 when the technology leaders from each group (Broms and Boman; and Okumura and Terashi, respectively) presented their — very similar — findings at a conference in Bangalore, India. Limited technical exchanges ensued thereafter.Whereas the Nordic developments continued to focus on the use of dry reagents (cement and lime) and relatively light equipment compatible with operating on and in very soft clays and organics, the Japanese progressed into the use of fluid reagents (cement-based grouts) and heavier equipment for both marine and land-based projects. Thus, by 1986, there were a large number of proprietary (wet and dry) DMM systems in Japan, and a rapidly growing market already by then accounting for over 12,000,000 m3 of ground treatment."

RISKGATE, an Australian Coal Association Research Program-funded (ACARP) initiative, has been designed to assist the Australian coal mining industry in improving minimum standards for safety performance, efficiency, operating practice and training. The online system is innovative in that it is built upon a foundation of industry expert knowledge gathered through action research workshops, which is further supported by a broad array of industry, academic and technical resources. In operation, RISKGATE offers a continuum for knowledge transfer and communication of current practice in risk identification, assessment and management in the coal mining industry. The primary mission of RISKGATE is to focus industry attention on prioritising control management as a way to achieve acceptable risk.A Coal Mine Tailings Dam Module has recently been added to the RISKGATE suite. The key risk, or initiating event, associated with coalmine tailings dams is catastrophic failure of the dam, leading to the release of tailings and water. This can occur due to geotechnical instability of the dam itself or of its foundation, overtopping and erosion of the dam, and piping failure of the dam itself or of its foundation. Coalmine tailings dams are also prone to seepage into the foundation and through the dam, particularly during operation when large volumes of water are discharged with the tailings. The most significant risk associated with seepage is the release of potentially contaminated water to the environment. Contamination can take the form of elevated salinity, acidity and dissolved metals. Run-off from coalmine tailings can cause erosion and can also potentially contain contaminants. Desiccation of the tailings surface can result in dust generation and dispersion.The paper presents the background and context of the RISKGATE project, the need for the addition of the RISKGATE Coal Mine Tailings Dam Module, and a description of the developed module, including the five initiating events considered, their causes and associated preventive controls, and their consequences and associated mitigating controls. Canadian steel foundry practice has made marked progress during the past decade. Equipment suppliers, development engineers, and foundry personnel have focussed their attention on every phase of the foundry operation, with a resulting lower demand on manpower and materials. Also, more rigid specification requirements as to dimensional tolerances and quality have necessitated improvement and increased control at every stage from the pattern shop to the cleaning room. The growing trend toward mechanization is clearly evident. Equipment such as sand mixers, sand reclamation systems, material handling devices, moulding machines, core blowers, etc., is being increasingly employed by the steel foundryman. This equipment not only increases production but also tends to lessen the human variable so prevalent and disconcerting in the early days of steel founding. The result has been an improved and more reliable steel casting, which is gradually obtaining wider acceptance by design engineers. The purpose of this paper is to discuss briefly some of the practices being used, and also the direction of development that is being pursued by Canadian steel foundrymen.

"A 28-year study of cross folds leads to the conclusion that the northwest-southeast folds recognized in many areas of North America are part of a regional pattern. Detailed examination of over 650 geological maps and reports of Ontario indicates that this folding can be traced across the province. Evidence is presented that this fold pattern played an important part in determining the pattern and scale of intrusion, that its recognition in the field can aid in defining stratigraphy, folding and faulting, and that it may have played an important role in channeling hydrothermal or magmatic mineralization. IntroductionThe concept of regional cross folding in Ontario is not new. W.H. Gross (1955) discussed regional cross folds in the Archean of Northwestern Ontario, and A.M. Goodwin (1961) referred to regional cross folds in the Archean of Ontario and Quebec. However, the interpretation in this paper is new.The writer saw a cross fold for the first time, underground, at Little Long Lac Gold Mines in Geraldton, Ontario, in 1951. This recalled the ""transverse folds"" on E.R. Faribault's classical maps of Nova Scotia, published by the Geological Survey around the turn of the century; M.E. Hurst's cross fold(s) at Timmins, Ontario (Figure I); and the cross folds mapped by A.W. Jolliffe in the Yellowknife area of the Northwest Territories. All these mapped cross folds had one thing in common with the fold at Little Long Lac: A northwest-southeast axial trend. Were such cross folds of purely local extent, or might they be indicative of a widespread regional fold pattern? If so, has such folding any significance for mineral exploration or potential?By 1959, based on a study of about 1000 Canadian geological maps and reports, including 291 in Ontario, the writer reached the conclusion that cross folding trending northwest-southeast is so widespread as to constitute a pattern of folding, and that such cross folding should produce changes in plunge along pre-existing greenstone fold belts."

THE furnace described in this paper was installed and has been used by the writer for the melting of rich gold-bearing material, and has given complete satisfaction. It may, therefore, prove of interest to other metallurgists who are faced with a similarproblem. A furnace of this type should be most suitable for the reduction of "cyanide preeipitate," "charcoal ash," "anode sludge," &c. formerly the melting was done in fire-clay crucibles, using coke or crude oil as fuel, but this method is costly, slow, and unsatisfactory. A small water-jacketed blastfurnace was also tried on this material after briquetting it, but was discarded in favour of the electric furnace. The furnace may be described as a simple form of the Heroult resistance furnace, with an adjustable upper electrode and a fixed bottom electrode. This is in accordanee with Stansfield's classification of electric furnaces. The heating is mostly due to the resistance offered the current by the molten slag. The melting chamber consists of a steel drum 14 in. in diameter and 21 in. high, and is lined with silica bricks specially made to fit the shell. The internal diameter is G in. The bricks contain 92 % silica, are made from calcined quartzite bonded with fireclay, and are similar in composition to those used for lining steel converters. They are set in a mixture of finely-ground quartzite and clay, and well dried out. The shell is bolted to a steel plate, which forms the decking of a truck running on rails, so that the furnace can be moved under ahood for carrying off the fumes. A cast-iron slag spout is bolted to the shell below the tapping hole, which is 4 in. from the bottom of the shell. This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the results of modifications in the borehole deformation gage design and subsequent changes in the overcoring techniques. Modifications in the borehole deformation gage have greatly improved the creep characteristics and enhanced the versatility of the gage. In situ field tests in competent rock near St. Cloud, Minn., provided sufficient data to compare the reliability between gages and new techniques in obtaining good engineering estimates of stresses. Near-surface horizontal stresses at the test sites are compressive and biaxial in nature.

"On the basis that 99% of the energy input into a mill is converted into heat, it is possible to estimate the amount of energy captured in the slurry, the amount that is lost to the environment as well as the possible means to reduce such losses. As a result it becomes possible to estimate the potential amount of energy that can be captured by technologies such as thermoelectric generators or even Sterling engines. Furthermore, it has been suggested that the energy recovery potential dry grinding circuit could be as high as twice that of wet grinding circuits.In this paper, the energy recovery potential of dry grinding will be explored by examining the case of the Newmont Carlin mine dry grinding circuit. The paper will open with a review of the energy recovery potential of a few wet grinding applications followed by a description of the dry grinding circuit and a definition of the control volume around that circuit. A thermodynamic model will be used to estimate the circuit discharge temperature and an estimate of any losses as well as provide an estimate of the potential impact of different means to reduce energy losses. The paper will close with a discussion of the assumptions used in model development."

Searles Lake, CA, contains the largest known domestic tungsten resource. The brines in this near-dry lake bed, located in the Mojave Desert 130 mi northeast of Los Angeles, contain an estimated 135 MMlb of tungsten. However, the low concentration of tungsten (0.080 g/L W03) in the supersaturated brine makes selective tungsten extraction very difficult. Although many brine chemicals are extracted from the lake, tungsten recovery was an elusive goal prior to Bureau of Mines development of an ion-exchange technique. This publication describes the Bureau process. The following subjects are ad-dressed: ? The Searles Lake tungsten resource. ? General problems associated with tungsten recovery. ? Bureau research objectives. ? Synthesis of ion-exchange resins. ? Development of a two-stage ion-exchange tungsten extraction and concentration procedure. ? Product recovery and purification. ? Flowsheets for recovering three products (calcium tungstate, sodium tungstate, and tungstic oxide) are presented and evaluated, as well as a summary of the research effort and potential applications.

A 70% excess of mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer, has been reported among men in northeastern Minnesota, where iron mining has been the major industry. The Minnesota Department of Health has studied iron miners who developed mesothelioma to identify possible sources of asbestos exposure. A database of all Minnesota residents diagnosed with mesothelioma between 1988 and 1996 was linked to a database of approximately 72,000 current and former Minnesota iron-mining employees to identify cases who had ever worked in the mining industry. The job histories of the cases were examined to determine if any of their jobs could have involved exposure to commercial asbestos. Seventeen individuals diagnosed with mesothelioma in Minnesota between 1988 and 1996 were found to have worked in the iron mining industry. Of the 15 for whom adequate work histories were available, 14 had identifiable sources of exposure to commercial asbestos in jobs held both inside and outside of the mining industry. The time between employment in these asbestosexposed occupations and the diagnosis of mesothelioma is consistent with the 20 or more year latency period that has been observed in other studies of this cancer. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Introduction Basis For System San Juan Coal Company (SJCC) is a subsidiary of BHP Billiton. Until recently, BHP Billiton operated three surface mines in northwestern New Mexico: Navajo, San Juan, and La Plata. The San Juan and La Plata Mines supplied the San Juan Generating Station operated by Public Service of New Mexico. Stripping ratios at those operations were increasing, and by 2000 a feasibility study was underway to develop SJCC’s vast underground reserves as a replacement. Early in the evaluation and planning phase for the San Juan Underground Mine, it was determined that the target seams (Fruitland #8 and #9) had a high propensity for spontaneous combustion. Spontaneous combustion was identified as a risk, both to personnel and equipment, and to the ability of SJCC to reliably fulfill its obligation to the power plant. In the last 20 years, several western US coal mines suffered underground spontaneous combustion events and/or mine fires. Included in this group were Colorado Westmoreland’s Orchard Valley Mine (1987), RAG’s Willow Creek Mine (1998 and 2000), Oxbow’s Sanborn Creek Mine (1999), the West Elk Mine of Arch Coal (2000), Arch’s Skyline Mine (2002), Western Fuels’ Deserado Mine (1996), and the West Ridge Mine of Andalex Resources (2003). The cause for the majority of these fires was spontaneous combustion. Fighting the fires required injection of an inert gas or foam. Nitrogen and carbon dioxide were the predominant choices of inert gas. In all cases, the gasses had to be trucked in from considerable distances. Before the inert gas could be used, injection holes had to be drilled into or near the suspected fire locations. This drilling and trucking caused costly delays in the timing of the fire fighting effort, and was not as precise as desirable. Emergency purchasing of gas and pumping services was extremely expensive, running as high as $70,000 per day at one mine. As a result of the experience of other western US coal operators, and the risk inherent with spontaneous combustion at SJCC, it was decided to pursue installation of a nitrogen delivery facility on-site at SJCC. This decision was later expanded to include a continuous supply of nitrogen.

Tungsten alloys with high-temperature strength properties, comparable to the best of alloys recently developed by others, were produced by a new process called here the oxyreaction process. The process involved additions of a powder of a reactive metal compound, ZrN, ZrW2, or HfW2, to a base metal powder, tungsten, which contained some oxygen. The powders were blended, compacted, sintered, and extruded. During sintering, diffusion and internal oxidation occurred to produce reactive-metal oxide particles and solid solutions. A dispersion of oxide particles could be precipitated by heat treating. The oxyreaction process circumvents many of the agglomerating and coarsening problems encountered in the current methods for dispersing a stable oxide in a metal. Oxyreaction strengthening results from solid-solution strengthening and from dispersion strengthening produced by the reactive metal and its oxides. At a test temperature of 1,650° C, the alloys prepared from WW, had tensile strengths up to 70,000 psi and stress-rupture lives up to 142 hr at 10,000 psi stress; the alloys prepared from ZrN powders had tensile strengths up to 80,000 psi and stress-rupture lives up to 27 hr at 10,000 psi stress. Tensile strengthening in the alloys was attributed to Zr in solid solution or to Zr-O-W structures too small to be observed in an electron microscope replica. Stress-rupture life was attributed to a dispersion of submicron Zr02 particles which precipitated and grew to 0.05-to 0.2-micron size during the test. Tensile strengthening and stress-rupture life were dependent upon both the zirconium and oxygen contents with the maximum occurring at roughly 0.9 atomic pot Zr and 0.9 atomic pot 0. Studies of the details of the oxyreaction process were made on the W-ZrW2 alloys and three general steps were determined: (1) The reaction of 0 in tungsten powder with ZrW2 to form relatively large Zr02 particles; (2) the dissolution of remaining ZrW2 into the W matrix and partial internal oxidation to form ultrafine but sparse zirconium oxide particles and possibly to establish Zr-O-W structures; (3) the development of ultrafine Zr02 particles during high-temperature aging.

In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) systems have come under growing scrutiny as a perceived mitigation to fuel and equipment price fluctuations, labour shortages and the need to move everincreasing volumes of material. Individual vendors and delivery organisations are now offering a sometimes confusing array of systems, particularly for the dig and dump side operations.One system does not suit all operations. This paper seeks to document the factors that should be considered in assessing the suitability of different IPCC systems, with a focus on dig side equipment layouts in particular. These factors include the productivity of the systems, interactions with the drill/blast and bench operation sequence, the ease of relocation, flexibility to changes in the reserve, scalability and compatibility with other elements of the system.
