The research work objective is to study a new ladle shroud internal design to reduce the slag emulsification in the tundish during ladle transient periods. A 3D mathematical model of the tundish was created to solve the fundamental equations, a turbulence model, and a multiphase model. The results show that using a conventional ladle shroud, the fluid is delivered with an excessive amount of kinetic energy being dissipated inside the tundish bath, generating strong mixing flow patterns and entrapping a massive amount of slag. In the other hand, the proposed ladle shroud dissipates the kinetic energy before the fluid enters the tundish promoting less intense mixing patterns; thus, the amount of slag emulsification is reduced significantly. Consequently, if the internal design of the ladle shroud is able to dissipate the kinetic energy before the fluid enters the tundish, it shall be possible to reduce considerable the slag emulsification and the slag opening area.

Através de ensaios eletroquímicos vamos estudar o comportamento do aço Super Duplex UNS S32750 em diferentes meios corrosivos, com o intuito de avaliar se o nível de corrosão do material é adequado para as condições severas de operação impostas a um permutador de calor.

Didímio metálico foi obtido no Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas do Estado de São Paulo, a partir do óxido de didímio, o qual foi produzido pela extração por solventes de óxidos de terras raras do concentrado obtido na mina de nióbio da Companhia Brasileira de Metalurgia e Mineração - CBMM. Foram investigadas duas rotas tecnológicas, metalotérmica e redução eletroquímica, ambas ocorrendo em sais fundidos. Foi possível produzir didímio com um mínimo de 99 % de pureza por ambas as rotas, mas a rota metalotérmica demanda uma etapa de processamento adicional para remover impurezas e agentes redutores.

O lixo orgânico doméstico gera um problema de eliminação crescente, exigindo sistemas de processamento dispendiosos. É necessário encontrar novas aplicações para estes resíduos; uma poderia ser como matéria prima metalúrgica. Neste trabalho é estudado o desenvolvimento de pelotas auto-redutoras usando a pirólise de resíduos orgânicos, onde é gerado carbono e voláteis condensáveis e não condensáveis. O alcatrão resultante foi misturado com minério de ferro, pó de carvão e fluxante (CaO), para produzir as pelotas. O carvão fluidizado cria uma forte aderência dos elementos, mostrando uma boa viabilidade do presente processo.

O presente estudo tem como objetivo demonstrar a cinética de recristalização e o amolecimento da liga C272000 processada na laminação a frio com uma deformação de 75%. Para determinar o modelo cinético Johnson, Mehl e Kolmogorov (JMAK) foi adotado a temperatura de 450° entre 5min. a 50min. Restaurando totalmente a microestrutura deformada plasticamente sendo progressiva a elevação do tempo e da temperatura. A caracterização microestrutural das amostras foi utilizado microscopia óptica e metalografia. Conclui-se que o modelo JMAK satisfaz a forma de nucleação da recristalização da liga C272000.

The EMSpec sensor employs the principle of measuring the complex impedance of the target steel over a range of frequencies these impedance values in turn varies with transformation fraction of the steel. A full scale implementation of the Real Time Transformation Monitoring has been installed at a quality large European steel producer to show the benefits of such a system. A total of three EMSpec sensor heads have been installed between the exit Finishing Mill and the Down Coiler on a HSM. For the successful production of Dual Phase, TRIP and TWIP steels increased control of the cooling regime is demanded; the use of surface temperature measurements alone cannot guarantee to achieve the desired mechanical properties. The EMSpec sensor, which is engineered to withstand this harsh environment, in real time directly measures the percentage transformation of the steel in the cooling area, typically in the accelerated water cooling zone. Using the information from the sensors integrated into the mill model enhances the models ability to predict the transformation profile.

As inclusões de sulfeto de ferro são indesejáveis no aço, pois são responsáveis por causar o fenômeno de fragilização a quente. A relação entre manganês e enxofre se torna de plena importância para o entendimento desse fenômeno. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo indicar a relação entre Manganês (Mn) e Enxofre(S) mais adequada para a não ocorrência deste fenômeno, e explicar a influência dessa relação nas propriedades dos aços C-Mn. Estudou-se um aço C-Mn com a relação Mn/S 50% menor do que a relação visada na Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional(CSN).

Os procedimentos são voltados principalmente a melhor manutenção das galerias de escoamento de água, melhorias no sistema de drenagem dos pátios, redução de altura das pilhas de matérias-primas, melhorias nos procedimentos de recuperação das matérias-primas dos pátios.

Inclusion deposition is still a standing problem in the continuous casting of steel since the deposition of alumina inclusions inside the SEN affects the productivity and the product quality. The present work studies the factors involved in the inclusion deposition at the nozzle and the effects of inertial, gravitational, buoyant, pressure gradient, and Saffman forces on the inclusion trajectories. The results show that the inclusions reaching the nozzle, only 30% get deposited along its walls mainly at the Upper Tundish Nozzle (UTN). This area of higher deposition is identified close to a low static pressure and a high turbulent kinetic energy dissipation zones where the effects of the gravitational and buoyant forces do not promote a significant inclusion radial movement since these are aligned with the direction of the flow stream lines. In contrast, in this zone, the Saffman force shows an important effect on the deposited inclusions, slowing down the inclusions in the vertical axis and increasing their radial movement.

Para acompañar el plan de aumento de producción de slabs de Siderar, fue necesario proyectar una nueva unidad separadora de aire para incrementar la generación de oxígeno, nitrógeno y argón. La premisa que direccionó este proyecto fue la integración y sinergia de la nueva unidad con el sistema de la Central Termoeléctrica y Altos Hornos, con el objetivo de salvar condicionamientos, obtener beneficios energéticos y aumentar la confiabilidad operativa. Como resultados de esta línea de trabajo se espera: Optimizar el aprovechamiento de gases de proceso, mejorando así el balance energético y la ecuación económica en la producción de los gases industriales; Mejorar el aspecto ambiental disminuyendo el quemado de gases en antorcha, reduciendo el consumo de combustibles fósiles y la compra de energía eléctrica; y aumentar la confiabilidad en el suministro de gases y del sistema de aire soplado a Altos Hornos.

Changes in the raw material sector in respect of decrease in quality, strictly enforced environmental laws and positive operation results of COREX® reference plants make it worth to carefully re-evaluate the COREX® technology in comparison with the traditional blast furnace technology. Integrated Plant concepts based on COREX® offer solutions for future challenges of the iron- and steelmaking industry, which include: economical hot metal production; efficient and highly economic export gas utilization (power generation, DRI production, syngas production for chemical products); lower raw material cost, higher raw material availability; environmental friendly high grade steel production. The economic evaluation of different COREX® gas based plant concepts in comparison with the traditional blast furnace route shows that the COREX® technology is highly competitive in the challenging iron and steel producing environment.

The Marangoni effect is an important phenomenon where a surface tension gradient drives liquid towards high surface tension regions. Temperature gradient, evaporation, disparity of viscosity, and surface roughness and topography are all significant factors that can affect this thermo-capillary migration. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of micro-groove patterns on the migration of paraffin oil, and obtain a well-designed texture of micro-grooves to prevent the thermo-capillary migration. Patterns of micro-grooves with differing orientations and geometric parameters were fabricated on the surface of SUS 316 stainless steel substrates. Experiments on the migration behavior with different viscosities of paraffin oils were carried out various temperature gradients. The experimental phenomena indicated that the surface with the micro-grooves perpendicular or parallel to the temperature gradient have a strong impact on the migration performance of paraffin oil. Micro-grooves perpendicular to the temperature gradient exhibited extraordinary slower migration velocity than that of the parallel one. Width and depth of micro-grooves had an obvious influence on the behavior of temperature-driven migration and detail discussions on the effects of these geometric parameters were carried out.

The present work analyzes the latest results achieved in scrap based EAFs in terms of application of chemical energy, starting from the observation that the general trend is a reduction of oxygen utilization. Consequently a review is needed about criteria for evaluation of melting process efficiency and equipment design. If from one side the maximization of productivity remains one of the major goals, from the other side some aspects of present market situation, included price of raw materials, are requiring the maximization of process yield. Based on achieved performance figures of selected plants and theoretical considerations, the effect of chemical energy input intensity is analyzed focusing on transformation cost, productivity and total energy input. The effect of present practices with lower oxygen utilization is considered also in terms of global CO2 emissions. Finally, the latest Danieli concepts and technological tools for optimization of chemical input are presented.

The most recent modernization phase of the wire rod mill at Sterling Steel involved installation of a pre-finishing mill, using a Morgan Vee Mini-Block, a new water box and shear with utility systems and automation. The new mill configuration adds more stands to the mill for better drafting and is designed to improve finished product quality by providing a more uniform entry temperature, better control of the feed section into the No-Twist® mill as well as enhanced surface quality. The new shear improves cut length accuracy as well as decreases the amount of trimming to reduce yield loss. This paper explains the changes made in the mill and the features of the new equipment and automation.
