An equation is derived describing fragment size for single fracture of brittle solids. It contains the equations of earlier workers as special or approximate cases and, in addition, is capable of describing coarse distributions in which a few large particles are produced on fracture. The equation can be fitted well to single fracture experiments where over-breakage is avoided. In 1956 Broadbent and callcottl described a method of analyzing the unit operation of grinding, applicable to homogeneous breakage of brittle materials. In essence, the grinding process was split into two parts: 1) the fractional amount of a given size which is selected for grinding per unit time, 2) the size-weight distribution of the fragments produced by breakage of this certain size (primary breakage distribution function). The theory was formulated using matrix algebra. They attempted an experimental verification of the theory using an assumed primary breakage distribution but the results were not very satisfactory. Austin and Gardner2 showed that this assumed distribution was widely different from experimental values and that it led to the poor agreement of predicted size-weight distributions with experiment found by Broadbent and Callcott. In addition, Austin and Gardner2,3,4 reformulated the original approach in terms of differential equations of grinding and demonstrated that the approach led to a very satisfactory description of the grinding process, providing that the descriptive parameters were measured experimentally. THE members of the society are doubtless aware that the production of American Bessemer steel works is constantly increasing ; that the same converters and machinery are doing more work every year. This enlarged output is due to various causes, chiefly the following: 1st. Better organization-better knowledge on the part of both managers and men, of the plant and the process ; of the way to economize the more exhausting labor, and of the arrangement of the details of labor and operations so that they shall not conflict; also, more pluck-a greater willingness to take risks, or, more properly, such an intimate knowledge of the nature and capacities of the refractory tory linings in various stages of disrepair, and the probable be- . havior of the fluid metal at various stages of its treatment, that the precise nature of the risk may be better known, so that the works may be crowded to their full capacity. In the early practice, after getting four or five consecutive heats in a day, the men preferred to "let well enough alone," and to devote the remaining time to preparation for another turn. Now, thirty, and sometimes forty heats are regularly made during the twenty-four hours, day after day, without the frequent occurrence and without the fear of breakdowns or "messes," as the spilling of steel charges was graphically named in Sheffield. 2d. The wildcatting in northern and northwestern Missouri, which started in 1939, was continued in 1940. Two new gas fields were found and one discovered in 1939 was further extended. The total number of completions was 94, of which 5 were oil wells with about 48 bbl. initial production, 30 were gas wells with an initial open-flow capacity of 37,655,000 cu. ft., and 59 were dry holes. The outstanding discovery was the Polo gas field, T. 55 N., R. 28 and 29 W., in Caldwell County. A sand now believed to be a lens in the Bandera shale at a depth of 400 ft. yielded flows of more than 12,000,-000 cu. ft. In all, I0 wells with 31,490,000 cu. ft. of gas, were drilled. The rock pres-sure is 80 lb. At present no arrangements for an outlet have been made. In Platte County, the Prairie Point gas pool in sec. 7, T. 51 N., R. 33 W., and sec. 12, T. 51 N., R. 34 W., and the Lake-side pool in sees. 5 and 6, T. 50 N., R. 33 W., were further developed, and in the latter both oil and gas have been found, but data are not available for publication at this time. Drilling for gas continued in proven areas in Clay County, and for both oil and gas in proven areas in Jackson and Cass Counties. Table 1 summarizes the results of drilling in Missouri in 1940.

On Jan. 1, the office of the. National Service Committee was established at 502 McLachlen Building, Washington, D. C. The first work was to review current legislative information; which is being continued and good results are accomplished. Whenever matters of importance appear in the Congressional Record, notice thereof with such documents as are germane are forwarded to the members of the committee for their information and advice. The first formal report of the chairman was on the so-called Smith-Howard bill to secure Federal endowment for the establishment of engineering research. The chairman of the Committee, at the request of the Executive Committee of the Engineering Council, appeared before the Senate Committee on Education and Labor for the purpose of opposing those features of the so-called Kenyon bill which would create a practically permanent commission dominated by the Engineering Corps of the Army over all Federal engineering projects as well as state and municipal projects receiving Federal aid. The greater part of the time has been expended in correspondence and consultation on the matter of the establishment of a Department of Public Works. The results of this work lead to the belief that there is much promise of the establishing of such a department by the 66th Congress Hall members of engineering societies, as well as the societies themselves, will unanimously agree on and support a measure, and in order to secure such unanimous support, it will be advisable to call a conference of engineering societies. .

1. Healthy and active Local Section organizations are vital factors in promoting the vigor and growth of the Institute. 2. Activity on the part of Local Sections should be recognized and stimulated by appropriation of funds from the Institute's treasury; and these appropriations should be as large as is consistent with the relative needs for other activities. 3. As between different Sections, the amount of such appropriations should be based primarily on the extent of activities as reflected in the number and character of meetings held and " the attendance of the members at such meetings. 4. In making a request for funds for any year, the officers of a Local Section should submit a report on the printed form approved by the Directors at their meeting on November 19, 1937. 5. A standing Committee on Local Section Appropriations, consisting of one past chairman of a Local Section, one member of the Institute's Executive Committee, and one member of the Finance Committee, shall be appointed by the President and shall pass upon requests for appropriations and authorize payments within bounds of the budget. The committee will be guided by the principles herein outlined, always having in mind the vital importance of healthy, active Sections to the welfare of the Institute as a whole. 6. According to Article XI, Section 2 of the Bylaws, requests for appropriations shall be signed by the Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer of the Section. 7. Requests for appropriations must be in the hands of the Secretary of the Institute by February 15 of the year for which they are desired.

THE various phases of the Mexican oil industry have received so much publicity that there is little to add to the discussion of present and future production, extent and importance of prospective fields, and status of petroleum legislation, to mention but a few of the angles of the Mexican oil problem. However, out of this wealth of information, which is generally of contradictory nature, the average petroleum man is at a loss to know something definite regarding the various questions involved so, keeping the foregoing in mind, it has been the writer's aim to record in a concise form the most reliable and up-to-date information regarding the salient features of the Mexican oil situation. PRESENT STATUS OF MEXICAN OIL INDUSTRY Production During 1921 The Mexican oil fields, during 1921, produced in round numbers 203,000,000 bbl. of which 176,000,000 bbl., or 86 per cent., were exported, the bulk of -these exports, or about 73.3 per cent., going to the United States. The Mexican exports were divided by grades as follows: Light crude, 47.0 per cent.; heavy crude, 22.0 per cent.; tops, 3.5 per cent.; fuel oil from light crude, 24.0 per cent. The balance, or 3 1/2 per cent., includes the bunker fuel shipments and the coastwise trade in Mexico, which is not classified as to grades. The figures show that, in importance, the light-oil fields from about 755 per cent. of the Mexican petroleum industry.

IN 1910 the author was engaged in a qualitative study of the radio-activity of several chemical substances and a few minerals. In the course of the work he studied the mineral allanite (obtained from granite ledges at Topsham, Maine), and found it to be appreciably radio-active. Recently the fact was brought to his attention that the radio-activity of allanite is not well known, although Hon. R. J. Strutt in 1905 published a list of radio-active minerals with their analyses, including allanite from Amherst County, Virginia. In the work done, a standard ,type of electroscope was used, and the readings were made with a telescope, fitted with a scale, by means of which the rate of discharge could be readily determined. The natural "leak" of the instrument was carefully determined, and all results corrected accordingly. The method of study was as follows: The material to be tested was finely powdered, and spread over the bottom of a small, inactive pan. The electroscope was then charged, and the pan placed in position. The door of the instrument was closed, and the rate. of discharge carefully determined. All results were reduced to common form to permit of comparison. It is to be noted that the materials tested were not used in strictly comparable quantities, such as if 1 g. of. each had been used, but about the same quantity of powder was used (in the cases of the solid substances), so that the results are qualitatively accurate.

L. S. BUSCH—We have had presented two methods of measuring these variations in powder compacts. E. OROWAN—Tn connection with the rolling mill research work carried out at. the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, with the help of the British Iron and Steel Research Association. Dr. E. A. W. Hoff, Mr. J. Los, and myself, have determined coefficients of friction at ex- treme pressures for a number of liquid and solid lubricants, both by direct measurement, and by calculation from measured values of the roll force. The most efficient lubricants at these high pressures (for the small amounts of sliding that, occur in rolling) were camphor and. in particular, borneol (Borneo-camphor). Perhaps such lubricants could be used with advantage in the kind of work described by Dr. Wulff. L. S. BUSCH—1 think Dr. Wulff has in the past mentioned experiments which have been performed in the extrusion and rolling of metals and which led to conclusions which can be applied to the compacting of metal powder. A. SQUIRE*—There have been some recent developments in the field of high pressure lubricants which indicate that boron nitride might be a very desirable material to employ as a die lubricant. At the present time its cost is prohibitive, but as the need arises for the material it will undoubtedly come down in price. The present price is $200. a pound. A micropyrometer known as the De Graaf apparatus has several advantages over the gas-furnace method for determining ash fusibility. When the De Graaf apparatus is operated by a modified method of procedure, the results closely check those of the gas-furnace method. This is indicated by tests on 27 samples of coal ash, with an extreme variation in fusibility values of 654" F. However, most of the ashes fused at temperatures between 2300º and 2500º. This, presumably, is the temperature interval within which the micropyrometer gives the best results. Additional comparisons are desirable. DISCUSSION (Thomas G. Fear presiding) A. C. (written discussion‡).-—The Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines has made two investigations1 of the micropyrometer for determining the fusibility of coal ash. These studies were undertaken with a view to adopting the micropyrometer method us a substitute or alternate to the present standard gas-furnace method, in view of the obvious advantages of greater speed, smaller ash sample, smaller laboratory space requirements, less equipment and greater comfort to the operator. However, the investigation showed that the micropyrometer type of furnace as then operated in five laboratories having this equipment could not be accepted as an alternate to the standard gas furnace, which is capable of close duplication in different laboratories, as shown in a recent colmparison between the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines and the Fuel Research Station of Great Britain.2 The algebraic meau

The papers and discussion appearing in this volume were presented at a symposium jointly sponsored by the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and held at Philadelphia, Pa., November 29, 30, and December 1, 1944. Late in January, 1944, Lieut. Col. C. H. Greenall, Officer-in-Charge of the Laboratory Division, Frankford Arsenal, Ordnance Department, U.S.A., suggested to the American Society for Testing Materials that it might be a propitious time to arrange for a symposium on stress-corrosion cracking at the Annual Meeting of the Society in June, and agreed to make available a number of papers relating to work being carried out at that Arsenal. The Society's Committee B-5 on Copper and Copper Alloys, Cast and Wrought expressed keen interest in the symposium, and other Society committees were contacted and agreed to cooperate. Since the subject is one of primary interest also to the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, it was arranged that the two organizations would jointly sponsor the symposium. A Symposium Committee was formed under the joint leadership, for A.S.T.M., of Carter S. Cole, then Chief of the Metals Branch, Conservation Division, War Production Board and now Engineer on the Headquarters Staff of the Society; and, for A.I.M.E., of E. A. IN an article published in the Iron. Trade Review 1 I gave a convenient arrangement for the installation of wet and dry bulb thermometers for use in making moisture determinations in the air being blown into a blast furnace, and also gave a chart for use in obtaining moisture values from the thermometer readings. The data from which this chart was prepared were obtained from the tables in use by the U. S. Weather Bureau.2 The work of Carrier 3 has shown that these tables are somewhat in error. He has recalculated the values for moisture as referred to, wet and dry bulb thermometer readings, and he has prepared a psychrometric chart from the values thus obtained. This work has priced the subject of psychrometry upon a correct scientific basis. I think it is proper that we should recognize the importance of his work and give him credit for one of the most interesting and valuable researches that have been published in recent years. Blast-furnace men are not ready to use, as he suggests 4 a value expressed in grains of water accompanying a pound of dry air. However convenient this may be for heating and ventilating work and other engineering problems, there are several reasons for preferring the use of a value expressed in grains of water in a. cubic foot of mixed air and water vapor, in connection with combustion phenomena and the effects of moisture on blast-furnace operation. Mr. Raden has described the practical problems associated with fines in phosphate rock beneficiation. In this discussion, a colloid chemical viewpoint is given to the problem of separating phosphate values from phosphatic clay slurries. The phosphatic clays are predominantly colloids of a complex mixture of many minerals (1). The constituents are typically 25% apatite, 40-50% clays, and various amounts of wavellite, quartz, dolomite, fluorite, and other minerals. The clays are montmorillonite, attapulgite, and illite, with some kaolinite. The various mineral colloids in the slurry are heterogeneously coagulated in the as-produced state. Dispersion of the coagulated state is evident from the fact that dispersing agents (certain polyelectrolytes) cause a large reduction in the viscosity of the slurry (2). The as-produced slurry settles from 4 to 8% solids within a week, but thereafter settles much more slowly in the form of a sediment of flocs. The supernatant liquid is often clear because of the cooperative action of the mutual interaction of particles during settling. Mineral segregation during settling has not been observed for the same reason. The initial slow settling rates indicate that the coagulated assemblies are very small. Efforts to separate apatite from the other minerals would be complicated by the heterogeneous coagulation state. Somehow the apatite must be "liberated" from its association with the other minerals before it can be physically separated. One approach for liberating apatite is to disperse the entire suspension. Four vertical boreholes in the vicinity of an electrical heater simulating a canister of nuclear waste in a granitic rock mass have been logged with an acoustic borehole sonde before and after thirteen months' heating. Excellent control of the structural geology and fractures present in the rock mass was provided by the considerable amount of oriented core recovered from the four boreholes used for acoustic logging and the large number of others used for a variety of rock mechanics instrumentation. Compressional and shear-wave velocities were measured as a function of stress on some twenty core samples, water-saturated and dry, which were recovered from the four acoustic logging boreholes. Further control was provided by a cross- hole acoustic monitoring program conducted before, during and after heating between the same four boreholes, and by measurements of acoustic velocities in an isolated block of granite in the same heater drift, which was subjected to an increase in temperature and to changes in uniaxial stress. It is concluded from the acoustic logging tests, taken in conjunction with the acoustic cross-hole and heated block experiments, that acoustic techniques: 1. Provide a means for locating and delineating systems of weakly- bonded or open fractures within the rock mass; 2. Provide a sensitive means for monitoring a rock mass for changes in moisture content or structural damage to the rock fabric induced by thermal or mechanical loading; 3. Together with the rock bulk density yield the elastic constants of the rock mass.

There is no question as to the importance of the part played by the retort in modern zinc smelting. A satisfactory retort should have properties that will result in resistance to slagging action and fire cracks, and have no tendency, or at least only a small tendency, to soften and bend under furnace heat. The life and cost of a retort also are extremely important factors. The trend in zinc smelting during the past few years has been toward longer retorts and .higher charge density. This is caused by the fact that the diameter is limited to 9 or 10 in. because of heat penetration difficulties in larger sizes. Consequently, increasing the length of the retort and density of charge offers the only practical means of increasing the amount of zinc produced per retort. The stiff-ness of a retort perhaps is the most important factor, as slag accumulates in the bottom of a retort which has sagged and very quickly cuts through, often ruining the retorts below. The development of the high-silica retort is a result of the demands made by the trend toward heavy charges. Materials Used for High-silica Retorts The materials used in the manufacture of high-silica retorts at East St. Louis are fireclay, grog and silica flour. Analyses are given in Table 1. The fireclay comes from the St. Louis district. The grog consists of clean firebrick culls, and the silica flour, a very high-grade material, is purchased in the form of a flour that has been ground through 140 mesh.

INTRODUCTION Creep of rock in situ, like most rock mass behavior, will be largely governed by the behavior of the natural discontinuities -- bedding planes, faults, and joints, in particular, Several past studies have investigated various aspects of the time-dependent deformation of rock discontinuities; examples include Amadei and Curran (1980), Engelder and Scholz (1976), Johnson (1975), Kaiser and Morgenstern (1979), Solberg et al. (1978), and Wawersik (1974). These studies have provided much insight into the general phenomenon, but they have also produced some inconsistent conclusions and left many unanswered questions. This paper will attempt to shed some light on one of these questions: What is the influence of stress level on the creep of unfilled rock joints? The discussion will follow a two-part approach to the problem: (1) laboratory creep experiments on small scale jointed specimens, (2) a simple theoretical mechanism to explain, at least in qualitative terms, some of the results from the experimental program. EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM Uniaxial creep tests were conducted on intact and jointed samples of a specially formulated gypsum plaster "synthetic rock." Synthetic rock materials have several advantages over natural rock for long-term creep testing: (a) higher creep rates, (b) lower strength and therefore lower loading requirements, (c) simpler specimen preparation, and (d) more controlled and consistent properties. Gypsum based plasters have been used previously in studies of short-term strength and deformability of jointed samples (Patton, 1966; Einstein and Hirschfeld, 1973). Furthermore, Williams and Elizzi (1977) demonstrated that natural gypsum, at least, creeps in a manner similar to that of most other creep-susceptible natural rocks.

IT is generally recognized that the .addition of limited small amounts of various lead salts may aid the extracting power of the mill cyanide solution in the dissolution of silver from ores and in some cases may aid in the treatment of gold ores. Excess soluble lead compounds retard the dissolution of precious metals by the usual mill cyanide solution. Another phase of cyanidation is the use of the zinc-lead couple as an aid to better precipitation of gold and silver from solution containing a low percentage of cyanide. The chemistry of the use of lead salts in cyanidation has been dis-cussed by Clennell;1 the addition of lead salts in various cyanide mills is recorded by von Bernewitz;2 and the reasons for the use of lead salts in cyanidation have been explained by Clevenger.3 This paper deals with the adaptation of cyanidation to a different condition, in which the presence of lead minerals in a gold ore that is refractory to direct cyanidation complicates the treatment. If free gold is roasted in the presence of sulfur and lead salts, or if pyritic gold ores containing even a small percentage of lead minerals are roasted to free the gold from the pyrite, lead compounds coat the gold particles enough to make them almost insoluble in the usual mill cyanide solution contain-ing lime for protective alkalinity. Also, the lead compounds remaining in the calcine are slightly soluble in the mill solutions and such dissolved lead may retard the dissolution of the gold by the removal of oxygen or

Mo-33Re) - 2100, ySS (Mo, Mo-33Re) - 800, rr (defornzation twins in MO-33Re at 1200"C) - 800. ysV (Cr. Cr-35Re) - 2400. YSS (CY, Cr-35Re) - 1000. Probably Ylv- YSV- 2500 for tungsten and W-25Re, giving yss (It&apos;, W-25Re) - 900. The interface energies of solid and liqid ch?&apos;omiu?.z, nolybdenu?rr, and tungsten are not geatly aff&apos;ected by rhenium and therefore are not a ttlajor factor in the ductili zing rhenium effect in Croup VI-A metals. THE interface energies of the refractory Group VI-A metals, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten, are not well-established. The objective of this investigation was to study the liquid surface tension, solid surface energy, and grain-boundary energy of these metals and compare them to those found for the bcc solid-solution alloys, Cr-35e,&apos; 0-33e,&apos; and -25e. Five techniques were used to measure interface energies in high-purity polycrystal rod, wire, and sheet at 0.6 to 1.0 of the absolute liquidus temperature. The alloys were chosen to see if there was any connection between interface-energy behavior and the ductilizing rhenium effecL4j5 EXPERIMENTAL WORK Materials. A description of the materials used is presented in Table I. Chromium rod was prepared by arc melting iodide process crystals supplied by Chromallo Cor., hot extruding, and warm swaging to 0.63-cm-diam rod.6 The sheet was prepared by rolling as-extruded rod to 95 pct reduction in area from a hydrogen furnace at 800" to 900°C and surface grinding off 0.02 cm from each face. Cr-35Re rod was prepared by arc melting sintered rhenium powder and iodide chromium crystals, warm rod rolling to 50 pct reduction in area in cans, and swaging to 60 pct reduction in area at 1100" to 1200°C. Some of the rod was warm-rolled to sheet and then surface-ground. Portions of swaged chromium and Cr-35Re were further reduced by swaging and drawing to 0.013-cm-diam wire by the General Electric Co. Mo-33Re and W-25Re rod, sheet, and wire were provided by Chase Brass and Copper Co. The molybdenum sheet consisted of two lots, both essentially the same except for the carbon content. Liquid Surface Tension. The liquid surface tension of Cr-35Re, Mo-33Re, and W-25Re was measured by a combination of pendant-drop and drop-weight methods using techniques already decribed." Following out-gassing, molten drops were formed on the ends of centerless-ground Mo-33Re and W-25Re rods by electron bombardment at 5 x 106 mm. Similar drops were formed on outgassed Cr-35Re rods by induction heating under 1 atm of 99.995 pct Ar. Solid Surface Energy. Solid surface energy was measured by conducting microcreep experiments on molybdenum, Mo-33Re, chromium, and Cr-35Re wires at 2350°, 2306, 1550°, and 180O°C, respectively. In preparation, gage marks -2.5 cm apart and -0.001 cm deep were circumferentially scribed on the wire with a razor blade. Weights of the wire material were then attached. Five to seven reasonably straight wires were hung in a container made out of the wire material. The free end was placed through a small hole in the removable top and secured by bending a small portion 90 deg. The containers not only tended to provide vapor-solid equilibrium for the wires but also protected them from gaseous impurities. They were nominally 2.5 cm in diam by 5 cm high and were made from extruded chromium rod, Cr-35Re arc casting, molybdenum bar stock, or welded Mo-33Re sheet. After deg re as ing, the assembly was outgassed at a relatively low temperature to 2 x 10"5 mm and then recrystallized 2 to 8 hr at the creep temperature in a rhenium-element resistance furnace. The static argon atmosphere was gettered by tantalum radiation shielding. Specimen temperature was measured optically to 25"C using calibration with known melting points and blackbody conditions. The wires generally developed a stable bamboo-type structure according to Fig, l(b), (c), and (d) and retained their gage marks [upper portion of Fig. l(d)]. One or two of the weights were clipped off to provide a low load for the creep anneal. To minimize the possibility of bending or breakage, the wires remained attached to the top of the annealing container which was held to keep the wires vertical. The distance between gage marks was
