For several years this Institute has recorded in its Transactions the various discoveries of potash‡ in America, and the successive stages in the development of an independent domestic potash industry. This paper is intended primarily to continue the record through the year 1935. In retrospect it is not inappropriate to note that public interest aroused in 1910 resulted in the production of some 1090 tons of pure potash in 1915, as a small beginning in the domestic inorganic potash industry, and that the infant industry thus begun reaches its majority this year, following a record production in 1935 of about 600,000 tons of potash salts and exports to no less than 22 foreign countries, including six countries in Europe. This production, with an estimated 200,000 tons of pure potash, may be compared with a production in 1934 of 430,157 tons of salts with an equivalent of 144,342 tons of pure potash. Mine and Plant Improvement During 1935, the American Potash & Chemical Co., at Searles Lake, Calif., began to reap the benefits of its previously enlarged plant facilities, which increased its productive capacity to 180,000 tons of muriate annually. The United States Potash Co., at Carlsbad, N. Mex., improved its operations by installing trolley locomotives and other haulage facilities and is maintaining its development headings two years in advance of operations, with projected plans for orderly mining for years to come. The hoisting shaft at its mine is now equipped to hoist at the rate of 1,000,000 tons annually, and the refinery to produce 150,000 tons of muriate containing less than one per cent of impurities. The Potash Co. of America, at Carlsbad, N. Mex., completed the conversion of its plant from a prospecting to an operating basis late in 1935. The coarse-crushing plant, with a capacity of 150 tons an hour, formerly on the surface, was installed underground, with ore pockets

IN Bessemer-steel practice, air is blow, through a bath of iron, or projected strongly upon its surface to burn out silicon, manganese, and carbon. Toward the end of the blow, when the iron is not protected. from oxidation by these elements and the excess of air becomes great, there is oxidation of the iron. In open-hearth practice, the same difficulty is experienced with dissolved gas and oxides in the product, though not to as great or severe a degree as in the Bessemer process because the oxidizing conditions grow less severe as the end of the heat is approached, and if the bath is allowed to boil for a time it undoubtedly frees itself from a large part of the gas and oxides which have been absorbed in the earlier part of the process. Basic open-hearth steel is usually assumed to contain a larger proportion of oxides than acid open-hearth steel, but it may be said that all steel, Bessemer and open-hearth, contains more or less oxide of iron dissolved in the fluid metal at the end of the "blow" or "heat." That certain metals are solvents for their respective oxides has been shown, in the case of copper, by Heyn, and, in the case of iron, by Law. It is indicated that the solubility of iron oxide in iron increases with the purity and temperature of the metal. This confirms what is observed and known by operating men, and these observations may be summarized as follows: 1. Cast irons is rarely subject to oxidation, as is logical from its composition. 2. Normal steel, unless deoxidizers are added, contains blow holes. 3. Steel known to be oxidized is full of blow holes. 4. The addition of deoxidizers prevents, to a greater or less degree, the formation of blow holes in normal steel. With these observations in mind, it is logical to deduce that the cause of blowholes lies in part in the presence of dissolved oxide of. iron in the

The year 1928 has been marked by scattered but considerable wildcat drilling considering the overproduction prevalent in the oil industry. This wildcatting has resulted in the discovery of oil in one interior salt dome, several small fields producing from serpentine, Taylor marl, and Austin chalk, and two new fields producing from the Edwards limestone, one of which in the Bruner or Salt Flat area of Caldwell County promises to be of major importance if not quite as large as the Luling field. Fig. 1 shows production by fields for 1928, compared in the case of the older fields, with that for 1927. New Production From Salt Domes Boggy Creek Dome This salt dome was discovered in 1927 by core drilling and deep tests recommended on the evidence of surface geology. A large block of acreage controlled by the Humble Oil & Refining Co. covers the dome. Since the discovery of the deep-lying salt plug and oil on the flank of this dome in 1927, development has proceeded slowly. Since most of the acreage is controlled in a large block by one company there has been no intensive competitive drilling. Approximately 8 producers and 16 dry holes have been drilled. Production is from the eastern equivalent of the Woodbine and Eagleford horizons of the Mexia district, and has been found extending in a northeast-southnlest direction across the River Neches on the southeast flank of the dome. One of the best wells, the T. H. Jones No. 2, had an initial production of 90 bbl. per hr., and others have made from 100 bbl. per day to 50 bbl. per hr., but production of the better wells has either been shut in or choked down to less than 2000 bbl. per day. At the end of the year the daily average, production was about 2500 bbl. from 8 wells. Considerable gas pressure is present and one well, the Elliot Clark No. 2, drilled in 1927, was shut in with an estimated wet gas production of over 5,000,000 cubic feet.

MEASUREMENTS of resistivity by methods involving the use of two current electrodes and two potential electrodes in general collinear with the current electrodes have been made extensively in geophysical investigations. In the method developed by Wenner and made use of by Gish and Rooney, and later in a modified form by Lee, the distance between the current electrodes is divided into three equal parts by the potential electrodes. In one of the methods developed by Schlumberger prospecting methods and by Koenigsberger, one current electrode is placed at considerable distance from the other and potential measurements are made in the immediate neighborhood of one of the current electrodes. The method is described as the single current electrode method, and the effect of the distant current electrode is considered negligible or a correction is made for the effect in the calculation of the resistivity. Usually the correction that is introduced is based on the calculated effect for measurements made in a homogeneous conducting material. The useful application of these methods in prospecting for minerals, of course, is in regions where nonhomogeneous conditions exist. In many of these conditions it is very doubtful whether the effect of the distant current electrode may be neglected, except for measurements in the immediate neighborhood of the "single" current electrode, and corrections based on homogeneity of the medium will necessarily be inadequate. In order to obtain a degree of symmetry that would preclude the necessity for corrections for the distant electrode and that would simplify interpretation, it appeared desirable to use a central current electrode and a set of distant end current electrodes symmetrically placed about the central electrode as shown in Fig. 1 and to provide by means of auxiliary resistances that the currents passing into the earth at the distant end electrodes should be equal. (San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THE history of the several petroleum deposits of Texas and Mexico, or of the sediments in which they now occur, if the deposits are not indigenous to such sediments, is known in a general way only, but it nevertheless casts strong light on the conditions surrounding them and is of great importance in the search for and exploitation of then. The petroleum deposits of Texas are separable into two main divisions: 1. The deposits of northwestern Texas, which are directly connected with the Oklahoma fields to the north, and have no representatives at all in the Mexican area. 2. The deposits of the coastal area, which extend into Louisiana on the east and connect with those of the Mexican coast to the south. Early in the Pennsylvanian period a series of bituminous shales and limestones were laid crown over a broad area in Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. These are known as the Bend series in Texas, the Caney shales in Oklahoma, and the Fayetteville beds in Arkansas. Following their deposition an uplift occurred, forming the Lampasas geanticlinal, which runs northeastward from the old Paleozoic land area of the Llano region toward Red River. The Bend series is petroliferous in places and has furnished a few producing wells on each side of the Lampasas uplift. This uplift forms the barrier and. dividing line between the two divisions of the Texas petroleum deposits. To the west of it, in waters which were the southern extension of the interior continental seas, in connection with the sediments and coal beds of the Pennsylvanian and Permian, great quantities of petroleum were deposited either as oil or as "potential petroleum." These sediments have been subject to very slight disturbance, and only very gentle folds. are found, with no signs of volcanic action in any part of the area. The conditions, therefore, indicate that the greater part, if not all, of the oil in this area is indigenous to the beds in which it is found.

UNDER the caption "fault," geologists intend to include all mass movements of solid rocks over adjacent rock masses. When these are studied long after their origin, however, circumstances make it possible to recognize as "fault" only formations showing clear evidence of actual movement of one side with respect to the other. Necessarily the chief evidence consists of the offset of a vein, bed, or other key structure. Planes of movement parallel to the bedding, or nearly so, are recognized with difficulty or are overlooked and hence many important faults are wholly unrecorded. Indeed, among standard American references on structural geology, one alone emphasizes the importance of bedding-plane movements and that one only briefly1. For some time the writer, cognizant of this difficulty, has paid special attention to such movements, both as observed in the field and as recorded in the literature. It is believed that enough data are now at hand to justify a short discussion. Its purposes are fivefold. It is desired first to briefly classify and describe at least the more common kinds of bedding-plane faults, and second, to examine the causes and manner of their formation, at least in instances where the subject has not yet been well covered by other investigators. Third, certain by-products of bedding- lane movements are of such conspicuous importance to the economic geologist and mining engineer as to merit mention. Fourth, concrete illustrations should be placed before the reader in order to lend reality and to furnish a basis of comparison with his experience; such illustrations will necessarily be scattered through the text of this paper. They are only in part from the writer's own field observations. The fifth and prime objective of this paper is to direct attention to the great importance of movements on the bedding planes, in the hope that the recognition of such movements and their significance may simplify mining problems.

AT the New York meeting of the Institute, February, 1914, Professor Hopkinson and Sir Robert Hadfield presented an important paper entitled Research with Regard to the Non-Magnetic and Magnetic Conditions of Manganese Steel.1 Any contribution on manganese steel by its discoverer necessarily carries with it much weight and is entitled to serious and close consideration. The momentous discovery of that alloy by Sir Robert Hadfield some 30 years ago was the signal for great activity in the field of alloy steels; and the remarkable results obtained in the last two decades probably constitute the most important modern advance in the metallurgy of steel. The authors of the paper referred to above are unable to reconcile with the allotropic theory the interesting results obtained by them in heat treating manganese steel. When they speak of the allotropic theory, however, I understand that they have more especially in mind the existence of beta iron. It is not my understanding that they question the occurrence of iron in the two allotropic varieties known as gamma and alpha. If I am wrong, I trust they will correct me. A careful consideration of the experimental results reported and discussed by the authors leads me to believe that on the contrary they can be very satisfactorily explained in terms of allotropy and that, in the light of our present knowledge, they cannot be accounted for in any other way. The physical properties of non-magnetic manganese steel described by the authors are those pertaining to iron-carbon alloys in which iron is present in the gamma condition, or, in other words, to austenite. The metal is then characterized by great tenacity and ductility and low elastic limit, while its hardness, mineralogically speaking, is not excessive, but of a special kind termed "tough hardness" by the authors. Prof. G. W. MAYNARD, New York City (communication to the Secretary): Prof. Christy, in his admirable paper on "The Growth of American Mining Schools," has overlooked the work done by the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in its department of mining and metallurgy. This oversight is naturally due to the fact that the department was, for lack of money, discontinued in 1871. It was organized by the writer in 1867, starting with ten students, who had already completed the first two years of the civil engineering course in the Institute. The course covered two years, specifically devoted to mining, metallurgy and assaying, which, in connection with the two years' drill in the civil engineering department made a four years' course. During the four years of the existence of the department, thirty-five students took the course, of whom twentyfive graduated; and of this number eight have been members of the Institute of Mining Engineers, and the majority of them have occupied high positions in the profession. The equipment of the department was, at that time, second only to that of the Columbia School of Mines. As Prof. Christy has cited other institutions which are not distinctively mining schools, but in which the ruining course was subordinate to other courses, it seems to me that the work in this line carried out by the oldest engineering school in the country may very properly be referred to. In addition to the regular mining course, a special course in assaying was given; and many young men were here prepared for positions in the mines and metallurgical works of the west. PROF. George F. Swain, Boston, Mass.: I have listened with great interest to Prof. Christy's valuable paper, but there is one conclusion at which he arrives that appears to me entirely unjustifiable, and to which I desire to take exception. Prof. Christy finds that of the total wage-earners in the United States in 1880,10.41 per cent. were employed in " trade and transport;" 20.24 per cent. in " manufactures and mechanics," and 1.83

The dry cleaning of coal is a relatively new art and, as might have been expected, a number of unforeseen problems have been brought to light in the few years that dry methods of treatment have been in commercial use. The pneumatic concentrators that were first adapted to the cleaning of coal had already been developed to a fair degree of efficiency, although at low ratings, in the field of ore dressing. The concentrating machines, therefore, were in a relatively more perfected state than the general technology of dry cleaning and, for this reason, the major difficulties encountered in the early plants were in the accessory operations involved in the servicing of the cleaners rather than in the functioning of the cleaners themselves. The crudities of a new technology were further aggravated, in some cases, by meagerness of appropriations which precluded even the provision of adequate storage bins and such other facilities as had been long recognized as indispensable to the proper functioning of older types of cleaning plants. The practice of dry cleaning is now sufficiently established so that we may examine critically auxiliary equipment and operations. The cleaning processes have been so simplified, with respect to presizing of the raw coal required and the quantity of air circulated, that stinting of expenditures for auxiliary equipment is not necessary to keep the per ton cost of installation in line with complete and well designed plants of other types. Furthermore, sufficient operating experience has been accumulated to ascertain the conditions most conducive to effective operation of dry-cleaning machines; at least the essentials of a definite technology of dry cleaning has been established. Early Operating Problems The problems that have occupied the builders and operators of dry-cleaning plants from the beginning have been relatively few, but difficult of solution. The principal difficulties have been: 1. The proper sizing of the raw coal to suit the cleaning process. 2. The handling of raw coal when it is delivered wet from the mine. 3. Dust collecting. 4. The maintenance of uniformity in cleaning performance.

IN the search for practical geological problems amenable to solution by the potential methods, the geophysicist is led to study mathematically various theoretical cases. In these idealistic discussions, the media under consideration are generally supposed to be homogeneous and iso-tropic. The geophysicist, of course, realizes perfectly that these condi-tions do not occur in their entirety in reality. However, the assumptions made are justified, because very often they are necessary in order to render possible an exhaustive study of a given problem, which otherwise would be too complicated, and would not lend itself to a complete mathe-matical analysis. Of the above two assumptions, that concerning the homogeneity of a given geological formation is satisfactorily realized except in so far as isotropy is concerned, since this property is not often encountered in practice. As a consequence, it is very desirable for the geophysicist to have quite an extensive knowledge of the properties of anisotropic forma-tions, and of the laws that govern the propagation of electric current therein. With such principles in mind, he will be able to decide whether the conclusions arrived at in simple, isotropic conditions are still correct in more complex cases, or in what way they must be modified or adapted in order to constitute a sound basis for the interpretation of the results obtained in anisotropic media. On the other hand, the fact that in anisotropic formations themobility of the ions is greater along the strike than perpendicular thereto can be utilized for determining the direction of the dip by induc-tion measurements. We therefore propose to study in three successive chapters the following points: 1. Propagation of the electric current in anisotropic media. 2. Some consequences of the anisotropy of geological formations with reference to the surface electrical measurements, and their interpretation. 3. Determination of the direction of the dip of anisotropic formations by surface induction measurements.

The influence of temperature and composition on the viscosity of high-purity liquid metals and alloys of the Pb-Sn and Sb-Cd systems was investigated by the logarithmic-decrement method. The variation of viscosity with temperature above the liquidus followed the equation: n = AeE/RT No large increase in viscosity was found just before normal freezing of any of the metals or alloys investigated. Certain alloys, supercooled below their stable liquidus, however, did show a marked increase in viscosity. Experimental activation energies for viscosity were determined for the metals investigated. Liquid-metal density values were obtained by a modified Joeger's method. IK an investigation of the properties of molten metals, the study of viscosity as a suitable means for studying the physical nature of the metallic liquid state has been utilized. Although interest in the relationship of the liquid to the solid-metal state holds promise of broadening the knowledge of metals in general, much information that is available regarding the influence of temperature and composition on viscosity, especially near the freezing point, is still controversial. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of recent work on this subject. Although interest in factors influencing the fluid behavior of metals and alloys has arisen from theoretical as well as applied studies of liquid-metal properties, the development of a comprehensive theory of the mechanism of viscosity has been handicapped because so little is known about the liquid state. Several theories of viscosity have been proposed and among the more recent are those of Andrade,1 Bernal,2 Frenkel,3 Eyring,4 and Gutmann and Simmons.5 Athough these contributions have helped to establish a basis of approach for studying the nature of viscosity, the fundamental aspects of the variation of viscosity with alloy composition have, in general, been neglected. THE practice of introducing acid into oil wells to increase production of oil and gas has been in use since 1894, when it was first used in the Pennsylvania. oil fields30.? It is only since 1928 that it has been used to any extent in the Mid-Continent18. The process has proved successful in increasing production, at least temporarily, in depleted oil fields where the producing formation is highly calcareous and where water drive is not too pronounced. In the Zwolle field in Louisiana, where the producing horizon is a chalk, increases of 100 per cent have been recorded25. In north-central Texas, where the oil is produced from the Marble Falls limestone, equally pronounced increases have resulted3. The production also in some fields yielding oil from quartz sand cemented with calcite has been benefited. The evidence of actual increase in total recovery of oil, however, has been questioned by some engineers18. It has been pointed out that the results of the treatment of a well in a new district, where the process has never been tried out, can never be predicted with certainty, since other factors besides percentage of calcareous content: of the oil sand play a large part in determining the success of the method. Numerous articles have been published on acid treatment and on the effects of acid on limestone1-35, yet very little has been written con-cerning experimental work on the actual effect, of acid on capillary pores and larger oil-coated voids of oil sands. This is due partly to difficulties in duplicating field conditions in a laboratory and partly to the fact that the process has been carried out largely by contracting companies that have been unwilling to publish details of their results for fear of loss of business to competitors. T. M. Drown, South Bethlehem, Pa.: Mr. Thackray's paper shows in a striking way the high degree of rapidity and ac curacy exhibited by the chemists of our steel-works in ordinary everyday practice. That determinations made in an hour should present only slight differences in the third place of deci male is certainly matter for surprise and congratulation. This remarkable result has been due, perhaps, in part, to a remark able cause. The managers of works, ignorant of all the diffi culties of the laboratory, have demanded "the impossible " of their chemists—and the chemists have done it! Andrew A. Blair, Philadelphia, Pa.: Mr. Thackray's paper is extremely interesting, especially in its bearing on the question of a standard method for the rapid determination of phosphorus in the laboratories of steel-works. Before discussing the re sults in general, I desire to explain the results obtained by me under method A'. This is the method which I have used in the work of the sub-committee on Methods of the Interna tional Steel Standards Committee. It may be described briefly as follows: Solution in nitric acid; oxidation of carbonaceous matter by permanganate; precipitation of phosphoric acid by molybdate solution; reduction of molybdic acid in the reductor, and titra tion by permanganate. This method was used apparently by only three chemists, Dr. Dudley, Mr. Crowell, and myself. In determining phosphorus by this method, among the most essential points to be considered are the ratio of iron to molyb dic acid, or the reducing action of zinc on molybdic acid as compared to its reducing action on iron, and the ratio of molyb dic acid to phosphorus in the ammonium phospho-molybdate obtained by precipitation from the solution of the steel. In regard to the first point, the usually accepted ratio is 1 to 0.90756, or, as it is roughly stated, 0.9076, which is based on the assumed reduction of the molybdic acid to Mo12019,. This

Many able men have contributed to the subject of coal classification, and recent publications on the subject have indicated a crystallization of opinion in that connection which promises the development in the near future of a scheme of coal classification which will be of real and increasing value to coal producers and users, as well as to those interested in coal on more exclusively scientific grounds. It is obvious that such a classification must be simple; must be based upon readily ascertainable factors; and if properly developed will apply to the whole range of coals between peat and anthracite and not merely to certain types of coal. Many of the numerous schemes of classification proposed in the past have given quite satisfactory results when applied to the higher rank coals, but have broken down when applied to the younger coals of higher moisture, and, as previously pointed out by the writer,' this breakdown has been due to the practice of ruling out "moisture" as an essential component of the volatile matter reported in the customary proximate analysis of coal, whereas a review of the mode of formation and natural history of coal satisfies us that moisture is a normal and natural ingredient among its volatile constituents; and a knowledge of analytical practice shows that the "moisture" and "volatile matter" reported are both mixtures of moisture and volatile matter, rather than sharply differentiated distillation fractions. After an extended consideration of the subject the writer regards the conventional proximate analyses of coals as affording the information essential for a both practically and scientifically satisfactory c1assification—assuming that the coal samples compared have been collected and analyzed according to standard methods. Two variables are required for a workable classification, and these appear to be afforded by the calorific value and proportion of volatile constituents (including moisture) credited to the coal on an ash-free basis. Xanthates have been used as collectors of sulfide minerals in the concentration of ores by flotation for over a decade, yet much remains to be done to elucidate the underlying reasons for the remarkable effectiveness of these compounds in this connection. Briefly stated, the known facts concerning the effect of these reagents on the floatability of minerals are as follows: 1. Xanthates are without effect on silicates, silica, and generally on minerals currently regarded as "gangues." 2. Xanthates in very small amount increase enormously the floatability of sulfides of copper, lead, silver, iron and mercury. 3. If zinc sulfides are first '(activated," as by treatment with a copper salt, they are readily floated by xanthates; otherwise not. 4. Elemental copper, silver and gold have their floatabilities increased by xanthates. 5. Sulfides of elements that are not typically metallic—e.g., stibnite, realgar, molybdenit—are not made to float markedly better by treatment with xanthates. 6. Oxidized minerals of lead and copper are floated if treated with large amounts of xanthates, but not so if treated with amounts of the same order of magnitude as required for sulfide flotation. Oxidized zinc minerals are not floated unless xanthates having unusually long hydrocarbon chains (e.g., eight carbon atoms or more) are used. Iron oxides and carbonate are not floated by xanthates. From a flotation standpoint the most striking feature about xanthates is the very small amount required to accomplish startling changes in the behavior of some minerals. The amounts used in practice to effect excellent concentration are frequently of the order of 0.05 lb, of agent per ton of ore; that is, of the order of one part of agent per forty thousand parts of ore. Changes in amount of agent of the order of 0.01 lb. per ton of ore (or 0.002 lb. per ton of pulp, on a 4:l basis) have marked effects on the metallurgical results obtained. Yet these changes represent a variation of but one part per million parts of pulp.

The definite trend to stricter specifications with respect to hydraulic concrete has become increasingly manifest in the last six years or so; but it remained for the vast reclamation projects of the Bureau of Reclamation of the Department of the Interior of the last few years to focus attention on this trend, and to demonstrate how thousands of tons of concrete-making aggregates can be produced continuously and automatically with a control of fineness comparable with that obtained with small samples in well equipped private and governmental laboratories. Pioneer work in this direction was done, to be sure, by private companies, notably the Kaiser Paving Co. of San Francisco, prior to the present vast public works program. Then in 1931 came the first great aggregates-preparation plant of the Six Companies, Inc. to supply construction materials for Boulder Darn1 in Nevada, and now, in 1936, the aggregates plant of the Mason-Walsh-Atkinson-Kier Co., general contractors on the Grand Coulee darn in Washington. At Boulder dam and to an even greater degree at Grand Coulee dam, sand production is recognized as probably the most important single element affecting the physical characteristics of the concrete. For in the construction of dams accurate grading of the fine aggregate has considerable bearing on the attainment of a uniform and homogeneous concrete of a high degree of workability and placeability and, at the same time, combining high density and low cement content. Low cement content is of value not only from the standpoint of ceonomy but also because the use of an unnecessarily rich concrete causes certain undesirable characteristics to develop. This paper will relate how at Grand Coulee dam methods that are more advanced than ever before are producing four sizes of gravel and a sand having a fineness modulus of 2.5-3.0. This paper aims to present the results of an investigation concerning gravitative differentiation in lava flows, based on a quantitative microscopic and chemical study of a Triassic basalt from Nova Scotia, and confirmed by data secured from a study of certain Keweenawan ophites. At Cape d'Or, Nova Scotia, near the head of the Bay of Bundy, marine erosion has exposed a series of Triassic basalt flows in which copper has been sought for a number of years. Studies of the thickest flow of the series with regard to volumetric composition, specific gravity, and grain have been made by the junior author, and measurements by students at Tufts College, together with confirmatory observations of the same nature on this and other flows by the senior writer, and chemical analyses made by the Division of Chemistry, Mines Branch, Ottawa,' all show differentiation in lava flows comparable to that in intrusive bodies. The work was made possible by the availability of the drill-cores, the property of Tufts College, and emphasizes the desirability of the study of drill-cores from other localities. Measurements of the specific gravities of certain Keweenawan lava flows of Michigan by the senior author, from material collected in 1915, will be given as a comparison to those of the Cape d'Or flow. It has been found that the specific gravity of drill-cores, or volume per cubic foot, can be readily obtained by measuring their dimensions. This can be done to an accuracy of within 1 per cent. in pieces of core over 100 mm. in length by using a micrometer gage for the diameter, and taking the average of six measurements of the diameter; and the average of four measurements of the length made with a finely graduated ruler. The discovery of two new fields, Van, in East Texas, and Darst Creek, in the Balcones fault zone, is the outstanding development in 1929. The first six months was one of the most inactive periods in the history of East Texas. Five of the interior salt domes, which had been so eagerly sought as a result of the Humble Oil & Refining Co.'s strike on the Boggy Creek dome in 1927, were drilled with discouraging results, and the Boggy Creek field itself had fallen far short of expectations. Kelsey, a structure of considerable magnitude and extent in Upshur County, was equally disappointing; the Amerada Petroleum Corpn.'s initial test on this structure was dry. The situation improved in the latter half of the year. On Oct. 13, 1929, the Pure Oil Co. discovered the Van field. This gained for East Texas a permanent place in point of future potential production. There was a similar reaction in the Balcones fault zone. The Salt Flats (Bruner) field, the important discovery of 1928, proved its rating as a second Luling, but on account of repeated failures to extend the productive zone, wildcatting during the first half of 1929 in the Luling district was dilatory. In July, however, Darst Creek, a third fault-line field of majori mportance producing from Edwards limestone (Lower Cretaceous), was discovered. Retarded as development in this field has been by various attempts at proration, interest in the Balcones fault zone fields centered on Darst Creek as the year 1929 drew to a close. Development in East Texas Fields Discovered during 1929 Van.—The discovery well, Jarman No. 1 of the Pure Oil Co., is near the town of Van in the southeastern part of Van Zandt County, Texas. It is 55 miles northeast of the Powell field in Navarro County and 45 miles west of north from the Boggy Creek field in Cherokee and Anderson counties.
