INTRODUCTION This chapter summarizes porphyry copper deposits within the State of Alaska. Prospecting for porphyry copper-type deposits in Alaska germinated during the 1940's, grew slowly during the '50's, boomed during the '60's, and matured in the '70's. Although large expenditures have been made in the search for porphyry-type deposits, most accrued data lies dormant in company files. However, an adequate base exists in the literature for a general synthesis of areas that contain porphyry prospects. To simplify the summary, porphyry molybdenum deposits as defined by Clark (1972) are omitted. Description of deposits in their geologic setting permits some correlations between deposit characteristics and crustal environment. These correlations allow speculation about the genesis of the deposits. The summary also attempts to group deposits on the basis of general mineralogic characteristics because diorite model deposits are separated from quartz phenocryst-bearing hosts. Data presented in this chapter summarize observations by the author, published descriptions of specific areas and deposits as noted in the bibliography, and comments by various government geologists. E. M. MacKevett, Jr., D. H. Richter, and H. C. Berg of the US Geological Survey have been particularly helpful. Because few comprehensive descriptions of individual porphyry copper deposits exist for this area, much of the data presented is new to the literature. Details of structure, isotopic geochemistry, and petro- genesis for individual deposits are largely lacking and even the general geology of some belts is not well understood. Details on petrography of Alaskan porphyry copper occurrences are inadequate for construction of ternary diagrams (e.g., Figs. 36a, b, pp. 103, 104, for the northern Cordilleran orogen). Petrographic descriptions summarized in the text are largely from published descriptions whose sources are cited. Porphyry copper-type deposits in Alaska include deposits with pervasive pyrite that contain disseminated copper (but not necessarily coproduct molybdenum). Available data preclude differentiating the deposits by size. No Alaskan porphyry copper deposit is now in production but this is believed to be, in part, a function of economics. In some cases available geologic information is in- adequate for classifying deposits. Some de- posits included with porphyry copper may, with further exploration, be demonstrated to be some other genetic type. Alaska has three distinct porphyry copper provinces: the Hogatza plutonic belt, the Continental Margin belt, and the Interior belt. THE problem of segregation and cavities in steel ingots is a subject which has given and is still giving metallurgists, en¬gineers, and operators matter for serious consideration.. This question has come more into prominence lately in the United States, clue largely to the desire of railroad engineers to secure a better rail than they have obtained in the past, as the service they demand is increasing in severity; and no doubt manufacturers will be able to meet what is required of them. The rails here are as good as those made in other countries, but the conditions of service and the extremes of climate are more severe and consequently more breakages occur. Various reasons have been advanced to explain why rails may not be as good in quality to-clay as in the past. Some engineers consider that modern methods of manufacturing, designed chiefly to obtain large output, tend to reduce the standard of excellence of more deliberate methods. Others think that 4-ton ingots are worse than those of 2 tons. Again, it is .stated that the 100-ton heat in one ladle is too large, and is a :step in the wrong direction in casting. My experience upon the question of the size of the ingot is that in rolling rails of from 85-to 100-lb. sections, the range of ingot is only practically such that the difference in the size does not help in the question of segregation, cavities, or blow-holes.

THE meaning of temperature control can be extended to cover not only the control of temperatures' but also the control of processes through a knowledge of the temperatures involved. In this sense it has a very wide interest. A list of the industries in which temperature control is used in one way or another would cover nearly the entire industrial field. This discussion will be confined to the field of high temperatures. In practically all industries involving operations at high temperatures, pyrometers are used or men are paid for their ability either to estimate temperatures or gage an operation by some physical or chemical change or condition dependent on temperatures. As progress is made in the development of instruments and of methods for measuring temperature, some of these highly skilled artisans are learning the use of a new tool. Many processes have been, in recent years, improved by means of exact measurement thus substituted for estimation, but in a great many industries the pyrometer has had practically no opportunity to demonstrate its usefulness. The perfecting of instruments must be accompanied with a dissemination of the knowledge that new instruments are available and can be economically used. The demand at present, however, is ahead of the supply, and many industries are handicapped by the want of pyrometers. One of the highest paid skilled tradesmen of the present time is the man in the steel rolling mill who knows when proper working temperatures are attained. The metallurgist in his development of steels is continually demanding closer adherence to given temperature ranges in the processes, and the pyrometer is rapidly becoming indispensable. Properties of the finished products are being correlated with working temperatures and so closely that in some cases even the pyrometer is taxed to give the required accuracy. The greatest progress has been made in those industries in which the lower temperatures are used, particularly below 500° C. In this lower range automatic control has been highly developed.

Last year's review was characterized as a year of politics and began an era of legislation. The 1972 review can be similarly characterized, with even more rigid health and safety regulations and environmental legislation. The mining industry should be aware of what's happening in the nuclear power and other fields as a result of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969, where the environmental impact of most major construction activities are already under close scrutiny. Section 102 of NEPA requires that all federal agencies include a detailed statement on specified environmental conditions as part of every report on proposed actions significantly affecting the quality of the human environment. All such environmental reports must consider the same general conditions: • The environmental impact of the proposed action. • Any adverse environmental effects which cannot be avoided should the proposal be implemented. • Alternatives to the proposed action. • The relationship between local short-term uses of man's environment and the maintenance and enhancement of long-term productivity. • Any irreversible and irretrievable commitments of resources which would be involved in the proposed action should it be implemented.

IF the tonnage of merchantable iron ore remaining in the Lake Superior district is divided by the average of the annual shipments for the past 20 years, it will be found that this ore supply will be exhausted in approximately 35 years. This computed exhaustion period would be an indication of the future activities of the iron-mining industry if it were not for the fact that merchantable ore is being manufactured from low-grade ore, of which there is an almost inexhaustible supply in the Lake Superior district. It is true that at present only the simplest of these low-grade ores are being concentrated to any considerable extent, but progress is being made with the treatment of the more complex ores, and now, in addition to 20 washing plants on the Mesabi Range, three plants are equipped with jigs for the treatment of ore that cannot be concentrated simply by washing. The latest addition to the ore-treating plants of the Mesabi Range is a magnetic roasting and concentration plant at Cooley, Minn., in which ore that cannot be concentrated either by washing or by jigging is roasted to the magnetic state and concentrated on magnetic separators. This plant is beginning its third season of operation, and while it is too soon to make definite predictions, there are strong indica-tions that this new process may make commercially possible the manu-facture of high-grade, merchantable iron ore from large quantities of low-grade ore now considered worthless. After the iron oxide contained in an ore has been converted to mag-netite, almost any desired grade of concentrate can be produced, using magnetic-concentration equipment of the types now in general use for the concentration of the natural magnetites of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The conversion of hematite (Fe203) to magnetite (Fe304) is easily accomplished by heating the ore to a dull red tempera-ture in a reducing atmosphere. The reaction is slightly endothermic, and while it requires 200 B.t.u. to heat to 900° F. one pound of hematite ore containing 45 per cent Fe, it requires only 100 B.t.u. to convert the oxide into magnetite. The art of ore dressing is as old as civilization itself. Jason's search for the golden fleece was perhaps only the use of sheepskins for catching gold from gold-bearing sands washed over them. From Hoover's translation of Agricola we gather that in the middle ages ore dressing had advanced through the stage of hand sorting to water concentration by jigging. German methods and apparatus continued in the lead until the closing years of the past century; indeed, it is little more than a generation ago that many ore-dressing plants in this country were designed and operated by German-trained ore-dressing specialists. Meanwhile the development of the ore deposits in this country during the nineteenth century brought forth new inventions and methods. Blake's invention of the rock breaker in 1858 and the coming of the Wilfley table about 1896 are random examples of the improvements caused by our expanding needs. Yet ore dressing remained an art developed and practiced more or less by cut and try methods. The publication of the volumes on Ore Dressing by Dr. Robert H. Richards in 1903 marks the beginning of American ore-dressing practice as a science. Previously we had as guides only a few incomplete books based on foreign practice, or scattered references and articles in our own Transactions. Dr. Richards set down all the developments that had gone before, and outlined the ways for a scientific approach to the subject. He gave us a starting point. Since then ore-dressing practice and technique in this country have set the pace for the world. Coal preparation has been called "ore dressing upside down,'' because in ore dressing we generally save a small percentage of the heavy valuable mineral and discard the lighter gangue, whereas in coal preparation we save the larger quantity of light mineral and discard the smaller percentage of heavy waste. By comparison with ore dressing the history of coal preparation is brief, extending backwards hardly 100 years, for although coal had been dug and used locally for centuries it became an important article of commerce only with the coming of the industrial revolution 150 years ago. In new mines it was to he expected that the thickest and purest seams should be worked first. So long as these lasted there was little thought of coal preparation other than hand picking of the larger impurities and simple sizing to supply the real or fancied need

OF the various methods of sampling gas-condensate wells, a method that secures a continuous representative sample of the well stream is desirable. Such a method, consisting of a sampling tube introduced into the well tubing, has proved satisfactory. The method is sufficiently accurate for operating and engineering problems. A portable testing apparatus can be used with the sampling tube to obtain data useful in studying the economic and technical aspects of the development and operation of gas-condensate properties. INTRODUCTION The recent discovery and development of gas reserves that contain hydrocarbons that condense with reduction of temperature or pressure, or both, to form a product known as condensate, has brought many new problems to the oil and gas industries. With further discovery of deep, high-pressure fields it is presumable that many more gas fields of this type will be added to the steadily increasing number. Such gas reserves are found either associated with oil as a gas cap or in separate formations. There seems to be no positive correlation between the physical or geological nature of the reservoir, and the chemical composition or phase characteristics of its contents. Knowledge of the chemical make-up and phase behavior of gas-condensate reserves are needed to cope with many problems. A knowledge of the chemical composition and phase characteristics of the reservoir material is necessary to properly design a gasoline or recycling plant, to estimate natural gas and condensate reserves, to enable the operator to study the economic and technical aspects of various methods of operation and development, and to carry out the plan of operating subsurface and surface lease equipment. This information is often useful in questions of mineral ownership, proration, legal position, and taxation. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss methods used by the writers to determine the chemical composition and phase characteristics of the fluids produced from a condensate well. The scope of the paper includes a discussion and description of the method of sampling, the results of tests on the accuracy of the sampling method, a description of a portable testing apparatus used to examine the phase characteristics, typical results of tests on wells from several condensate fields, and some of the applications of these data to production problems. References to previous work on this subject are cited at the end of the paper. THE PROBLEM At reservoir conditions of temperature and pressure, the fluids produced from a condensate well exist in a homogeneous vaporous condition. The consequent reduction of temperature and pressure that occurs as this gas enters and flows up the well tube results in condensation of some of the hydrocarbon material to form a liquid. A two-phase distributed-parameter model of the flotation process has been extended to allow consideration of the important process parameter, concentrate grade. A simple expression is presented for the grade of concentrate in terms of the zeroth and first moments of the concentrate distribution. An example is given for a binary ore containing two pure minerals each having nondistributed rate constants. For extend-ing the model to the distributed rate constant case, a cubic polynomial zoas utilized to simulate the feed distribution. One particular example is considered and grade-recovery curves are generated to show the dependence of such curves on the initial feed distribution. Operating flotation plant engineers have traditionally evaluated plant performance in terms of the recovery of valuable mineral and the grade of the concentrate. In both operation and research, grade-recovery relationships have been used as a guide for selecting flotation conditions. Weissl illustrated the use of grade-recovery curves in plant operation and considered the grade-recovery relationship to be a metallurgical one. The extensive experimental work of Chi" using standard batch flotation tests on iron ores shows that, even with extensive statistical correlation of data, little insight can be gained into the basic fundamentals of these relations. Such relations must depend on the kinetic behavior of the various mineral species in the flotation circuit. In his flotation text book, Gaudin3 considered the relationship of recovery and of product grade to flotation kinetic indices, but he did not extend his calculations to yield grade-recovery relations. Although Gaudin used a simplistic model for his analysis, he did recognize that variations in flotation rates must result from variations in locking, surface heterogeneity, particle size and shape, among other things. In a recent paper,' we presented a model of the flotation process that could be readily analyzed with an analog computer. This model combines the concept of a distributed set of rate constants"" with that of the two-phase flotation model,8" resulting in a model more powerful and flexible than previous ones. The purpose of the present paper is to show how this model can be used to generate grade-recovery curves and to determine the dependence of such curves on the various kinetic parameters. In this paper, the model will be limited to the semi-batch case, but extension to the continuous case is a straightforward step.

The economics of pressure tunnel design emphasize the utmost utilization of the least expensive pressure-resisting material available, namely, the rock surrounding the tunnel. A major difficulty in the design is the problem of transferring internal hydraulic pressure to the rock through a tunnel lining or membrane provided to maintain watertight conditions. The lining is necessary not only to prevent water loss, but to prevent the diffusion of water at high pressure through joints and fractures beyond the confines of the tunnel, an occurrence which could ultimately affect the stability of the rock mass through which the tunnel passes. Because of its toughness and ability to bridge localized areas of weakness, steel is used for a lining material whenever high internal pressures are involved. The steel lining is coupled to the surrounding rock mass through an annular ring of concrete backfill. It is paradoxical that the steel lining, needed primarily to assure water tightness, must of necessity be incorporated into the structure as a major pressure-resisting component, not to augment the bearing capacity of the concrete and rock, but to limit the strain for the safety and preservation of the steel lining itself. With the deformation modulus of the steel so much greater than that of the rock, the liner approaches its yield strength before the load capacity of the rock can be fully mobilized. INTRODUCTION The objective of this chapter is to inform the industry, as well as the public, of the challenges in dealing with the problems associated with the contamination of air and water from coal preparation plants. The need for an informed industry is most important. It is hoped that some contribution may be given to a more efficient and economical approach to the problems of plant waste contaminants at individual plants. The problem has many facets, and consideration to specific area should begin early before any significant problems develop at a given plant. It is then possible to have a reasoned approach before the pressures of an emergency environment force hasty and incomplete solutions. It will be necessary to anticipate these problems in the design of new preparation plants and advance consideration should be given to all the problems concerned with contaminants. The first part of the chapter will concern itself mainly with the contamination aspects of fine-coal cleaning and "black-water" disposal. Also attention will be given to the nature and formation of water from coal-mine drainage systems and the treatment of these waters for industrial use. Some attention will be devoted to the cost of installing and operating the various beneficiation systems for the removal of suspended solids. The second part of the chapter will analyze the problems of air contaminants from coal preparation plants. The nature and the effects of these contaminants and their potential for air pollution will be examined. One of the most critical is the measurement and analysis of these contaminants. As a result of identifying and determining the extent of the problem, better control can be planned. One of the most serious contaminants in air involves the element sulfur, and its elimination as a source of air pollution is one of the most challenging areas in coal preparation today. The last part of the chapter will emphasize the long-range problem of refuse disposal and control. Minimum operating and maintenance costs are functions of the proper selection and geometry of refuse disposal areas. Disposal procedures are varied but must be rigidly pursued or difficulties will result. Maintenance of refuse areas, including monitoring of burning refuse, is critical. It should be recognized that fine-solid refuse disposal systems must be carefully designed to minimize contamination. In 1960, the Kennecott Copper Corp. and the U.S. Bureau of Mines entered into a joint research program to determine the changes in stress, strain, and displacement created by changes in slope angles. The field site was the Kimbley Pit, located near Ely, Nev. The supporting laboratory investigations were made at the Bureau's Denver Mining Research Center. Following a study to determine the rock stresses in the mining district, the strike and dip of geologic defects (fractures) in the rock, and the laboratory-determined strength of the rock, a new slope angle and pit configuration was selected, and instruments were installed to measure changes in stress, strain, displacement, microseismic noise rate, and sonic velocities at several points in the west wall of the pit. Between February and November 1966, the west slope was changed from an average angle of 45' to a slope angle that started at 45° on the south wall, and gradually increased to 575' at the center of the west wall, and to 61° on the north wall. The pit was deepened from about 500 ft to about 550 ft. About 2.55 million tons of waste and ore were removed by stripping and mining. Measurements made between November 1965 and September 1967 showed that the pit wall was stable before excavation began, that changes in the measured quantities occurred in the pit wall during the excavation, and that the wall returned to a condition of equilibrium after the mining was completed. The need for a method and the technology to pre-design a pit slope does not require elaboration. About 5 billion tons of material are excavated yearly by surface mining methods in the United States, and the economics, safety, and availability of lower grade metals, nonmetals and fuels could all be substantially improved if operators could preselect optimum slope angles. Many investigators have attempted to determine the true nature of the internal changes taking place during aging. Merica, Waltenberg and Scottlt were the first to propose a theory of age-hardening. They attributed the age-hardening of duralumin to the precipitation of minute particles of the compound CuA12. Later Zay Jeffries and R. S. Archer2 augmented the above theory by suggesting that the small CuAl2 particles acted as "keys" causing "slip interference." Many other investigators3 have devoted much time to the mechanism of age-hardening, some corroborating the "precipitation" and "slip interference" theory, others coming to different conclusions because of effects that to them seemed unexplainable by the early theories; e.g., the increase of electrical resistance upon aging, the fact that no change in lattice parameter could be detected during the early stages of aging even at elevated temperatures, and the fact that the density did not change as would be predicted. In 1932, Merica revised4 his earlier precipitation theory to take care of these presumably anomalous effects. This revised theory, the "knot" theory, assumes that substantial age-hardening occurs before actual precipitation of solute as discrete particles. The assumed mechanism is one of diffusion of solute atoms into groups forming distorted regions which act as "hard" spots and cause slip interference. These "knots" are assumed to have approximately the same lattice arrangement as the solvent. The anomalous behavior of lattice parameter, density, and electrical conductivity, require a modification of the simple precipitation-hardening theory, only if it is assumed that the precipitation of minute particles during aging has the same effects on these properties as the formation of large particles under equilibrium conditions. IN 1925 the writer undertook a detailed statistical study of all producing areas in the Joplin district as a basis for evaluating programs and measuring objectives. For this purpose, the published figures in the yearly volumes of Mineral Resources were used, supplemented for earlier years by publications of the Missouri Geological Survey and other local and less official sources. When all else failed, the available data were projected backward to hazard a reasonable guess as to the unrecorded early output of important areas. Fortunately, the proportion of such prehistory production is not a large factor in any of the totals. These results were used during the next few years to measure the relative importance of various producing areas and to predict the peak period of development of the all-important Picher field. For the purpose of this review, the charts have been completed to the end of 1950. During World War 11, the U. S. Bureau of Mines became interested in a similar study and issued comprehensive statistical tabulations of data up to 1945 ( Info. Circular 7383), which have been checked against the figures used herein. This tabulation, however, does not include all the earlier data used by the writer nor does it offer any estimates of the wholly unrecorded era in the beginnings of the earlier camps. The area covered in this study is shown in Fig. 1 on which are indicated the relative location and approximate outlines of the principal producing camps. This also shows the approximate yield to date of each major camp in terms of combined lead and zinc concentrates. The output of zinc concentrates is roughly seven times that of lead. Hence, the economy of the district has depended primarily on the price of zinc, with lead as an important byproduct. Over much of the productive period, lead concentrates averaged about twice the value of zinc concentrates per ton, and in certain mines or areas the proportion of lead to zinc was substantially above average. The Joplin district is largely flat prairie but is partly moderately dissected, partially wooded land with a relief generally less than 100 ft. The rocks are almost flat-lying, nearly parallel to the surface, and the chief ore formation is the Mississippian Boone limestone, including its cherty phases. This formation either outcrops in the producing areas or is covered by a thin veneer of Pennsylvanian shales. Virtually all the ore occurs within 400 ft of the surface, and a large part at less than 300 ft in depth. Most of the land was divided into small farms or town lots before mineral development; tracts seldom exceeded 160 acres, and averaged considerably less. Mineral rights followed the surface ownership, segregation was rare, and a system of leasing for mineral development became well established early in the region's history, many landowners deriving small to sizable fortunes from royalties. Because of the shal-lowness of the ore and other factors, prospecting and mining was cheaper than in almost any comparable mining district in the United States. This situation, coupled with the widely divided land ownership, offered a fertile field for promoters and speculators and led to the rise of many small mining concerns. Only in its later history, under stern economic compulsion, has control tended to centralize in a few companies. Under these conditions, any important new discovery or successful development had much the effect of a gold rush or an oil boom. Every property in the area was leased quickly, promptly drilled, and, if ore was found, it was soon on the market. Many companies and individuals participated, and the average producing lease-hold probably was about 40 acres in extent. Any important field thus was attacked by anywhere from 10 to 100 or more producers. Production zoomed, eventually steadied or wavered, and ultimately subsided, leaving a desolation of tailings mountains, cave-ins, empty housing, and wreckage. The object of this paper is to depict the pattern of this process, so far as metal production is concerned, and to note the way in which it reacted to economic and political pressures. Production Charts In Fig. 2 is charted the production record, in tons of lead and zinc concentrates combined, of eight of the principal camps, which together account for approximately 99 pct of the total district production, over the years from 1870 to 1950. This period covers all but the very minor beginning of mining history. Two important camps are divided by state lines; hence, it has been necessary to combine production records for the two portions, based on estimates that may be slightly in error. Certain camps are sub-dividable into important units for which separate figures are available in whole or in part and have been charted as fractions of the major unit. The corresponding price of zinc is shown above all the charts. Three camps, Aurora, Neck City, and Galena, show a remarkably symmetrical graphic pattern, which is interpreted as the norm. The curves rise steeply to a peak, level off for an irregular interval, and then drop sharply to zero on a slope corresponding roughly to that covered by the initial rise. The three portions of these charts seem appropriately characterized by the designations of youth, maturity, and decline. On the whole, with some irregularities, the production in each of the three periods seems to be almost equal. A fourth camp, Granby, fails to conform to the normal pattern. It exhibits a very long period of reasonably uniform, stabilized production corresponding to maturity, followed by a rather precipitate decline. Its youth is hidden in the era of prehistory. This habit of steady, long-continued production at an even keel is attributable to the fact that this camp, more than any other, was controlled largely by a single principal owner at any given period over most of its history and this permitted the imposition

a. Boundaries of the District.—The district here considered comprises that portion of Colorado commonly known as " the San Juan Country." In order to bring the principal geological features of this region within the scope of a map of convenient dimensions upon a suitable scale, I have found it desirable to mark off boundaries near the parallels of 37O and 38O 10', and the meridiaus of 106' 30' and 108' 30' (West Longitude from Greenwich). This area of (approximately) 9400 square miles includes all the formations which we should have to discuss if our territory were greatly enlarged, excepting such as are distinctly characteristic of adjoining areas with independent orographic genesis. By limiting this review to these confines we miss very little of the geology of the eight counties of the San Juan region, viz.: Dolores, San Miguel, Ouray, Hinsdale,

There are those in the Colstrip, Mont., area who can still remember the opening of the Rosebud mine in 1923. For 35 years it was a steady employer of 80 or 90 residents who produced coal for the railroad. In 1958, though, mining ceased as diesel locomotives supplanted steam engines. The mine was purchased in 1959 by Montana Power, the parent of Western Energy Co., and production resumed in 1968. Long Construction Co. was chosen as operator of the mine equipment. At that time, reserves appeared virtually unlimited. The thick Rosebud seam coursed through alternate sections of railroad holdings and federal land-then came the federal moratorium on coal leasing in 1971. About the time Western Energy completed the special leasing procedure to extend reserves from an existing mine, a new federal monkey wrench was thrown into the works with passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977.
