Canada's newest low-grade porphyry copper mine, Gibralter Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.), has reached production. The subsidiary of Placer Development Ltd., located at Williams Lake in the Caraboo District of central British Columbia, began open pit mining in mid-June on reserves estimated at 358 million tons assaying 0.373r: Cu and 0.016C; MoS,. Each of four separate zones will be mined in a predetermined sequence, in one or more stages, and with a throughput of more than 36,000 tpd. The sequence and stages of mining the zones have been determined by computer calculation and economic analysis and are designed to maximize recovery and minimize cost. At the very least, the mine is off to a promising start. Development costs leveled off at $67 million. 9'; below the anticipated budget.

RECENT experiments in reflected sunlight photography in mine shaft's' and. slopes in the McAlester, Oklahoma, coal-mining district have been so satisfactory as to indicate that such a method has definite scientific value. The entrances to abandoned deep shafts and slopes on Choctaw and Chickasaw Indian coal lands in Oklahoma are being filled or bulk-headed by the U. S. Geological Survey under Public Works Project F. P. 63-C&C. Inasmuch as these mines may be reopened at some future time when there is a demand for coal, H. I. Smith, Chief of the Mining Division, suggested that photographs of deep shafts would be of value. Such photographs would show timber details and the general condition of the walls. Photographic records of the exact status of shafts when filled will facilitate operations in reopening.

Normal dodecyl mercaptan was evaluated as a collector for flotation of sulfide minerals and precious metals. The reagent is from the class of normal mercaptoalkanes (n-alkyl thiols), and is commercially available in the form of a mixture of n-dodecyl mercaptan, the primary constituent, and a water-soluble dispersant, under the trade name Pennfloat™ 3. * Reported are results of bench-scale flotation experiments on many commercially treated base metal and precious metal sulfide ores. Dosages, points of addition, and flotation pH were among the variables studied. Most notable results were increased copper, molybdenum, and precious metals recoveries. Dosages of dodecyl mercaptan on some ores were considerably lower than required for conventional collectors. The reagent was shown to be a highly effective and versatile collector on virtually all of the more than 30 sulfide ore types examined.

IN the flotation of iron ores laurylamine derivatives have been used for considerable time.12 To effect satisfactory separation of the gangue, predominantly silica, from the iron oxide minerals, the addition of specific depressants for the iron oxides has been found necessary. Starches and starch products have been used for this purpose. 3 There is, however, very little published information on the effects of these materials and other variables on this process. In some cases it has been found that prior acid scrubbing and desliming are essential, 4 and depending upon the efficiency of the subsequent washing step, there will be accompanying changes in pH. It was the object of this investigation to test and observe the effects of the above factor as well as to examine and compare the action of various starches and starch products.

The effect of poisoning on the behavior of platinum electrodes in redox potential measurements in metallurgical systems was studied in the presence of such inorganic surfactants as cyanide and sulfide and such organic surfactants as dodecylammonium acetate, trimethyldodecylammonium chloride, potassium ethyl xanthate, and potassium diethyl dithiophosphate (Aerofloat®). These chemical species represent, more or less, typical constituents encountered in leaching, flotation, and sewage treatment systems. Triangular wave voltammetry was used as the experimental technique to study the nature of poisoned surfaces. Among the species studied hydrogen sulfide and dodecylamine were found to form a resistant surface film affecting charge transfer. Platinum electrodes appeared to have a weaker tendency to adsorb sulfide species in alkaline pH ranges, while cyanide, xanthate, and dithiophosphate affected the normal electrode behavior differently. Possible methods of reactivation of a poisoned electrode by mechanical cleaning are suggested.

Arsenical gold ores occur in many parts of the world, including numerous mines in Canada and the western United States. Free gold is often finely disseminated in the grains of sulfide minerals, arsenopyrite, pyrite, orpiment and realgar. Generally a sulfide concentrate is produced by flotation. Arsenical ores or concentrates are not amenable to direct cyanidation and therefore are considered refractory. A wide variety of roasting equipment and conditions have been used by the mills to remove arsenic and sulfur from these concentrates. The resulting calcine is easy to cyanide and gold is recovered from the cyanide solution by zinc dust cementation. Room-temperature potential-pH diagrams and high-temperature phasestability diagrams are presented to discuss the chemistry of the gold cyanidation, cementation, and roasting steps in the presence of arsenic. The environmental aspects of arsenic discharge are also included.

The creep and creep-fracture behavior of a Ni-200-2Th0, alloy has been studied over the temperature range 816° to 1038°C and stress range 4000 to 19,000 psi Specimens having their axes either parallel or transverse to the final sheet-rolling direction were tested in air, and the apparent activation energy for creep was found to be 92 kcal per mole, regardless of specinien orientation. The stress dependence 01- the steady-state creep rate, was satisfied by where n depended on orientation; n = 9.7 for rrzaterial transverse to the rolling direction and n = 24.3 for material parallel to the rolling direction. In the latter case, the relation was also valid. The rupture strength of material parallel to the rolling direction was -1.5 times gveater than the transverse rupture strength. Several tests in vacuum revealed that here the creep rate was higher and rupture life lower than for comparable tests in air. THERE is an increased interest today in producing improved dispersion-hardened alloys for high-temperature structural applications. This had led various materials designers to modify existing alloys, such as thoriated nickel. One system that has received considerable attention is based on chromium additions to Ni-ThO2, with the obvious motive of improving the oxidation resistance. Another effect of chromium is that of lowering the stacking-fault energy, y, of nickel. For example, the addition of 30 wt pct Cr decreases y from -225 erg per sq cm for pure nickel1 to -70 erg per sq cm.' This decrease in y could have several effects on the deformation behavior. There is some evidence that cross slip of dislocations around Tho2 particles is a mechanism of tensile3 and creep4 deformation in TD Nickel (Ni + 2 vol pct ThO2) at temperatures below 0.5 the absolute melting point of nickel, T,. A decrease in ? by chromium additions should increase the difficulty of cross slip. Also it has been suggested that the high-temperature (T > 0.5Tm) rate-controlling creep process in "recrystallized" Ni-Tho2 alloys is the climb of edge dislocations over Tho2 particles.5 According to weertman6 a decrease in the stacking-fault energy should decrease the dislocation climb velocity resulting in a decreased steady-state creep rate. Thus, chromium additions to recrystallized Ni-Tho2 alloys would be expected to decrease the creep rate, all other conditions being constant. However, a difficulty arises when the stacking-fault concept is applied to high-temperature creep of dispersion-strengthened metals which are produced on a commercial or semicommercial scale. This occurs because the materials are processed so that they have a high-stored energy of cold work, and the other substructural effects could obscure any influence of stacking-fault energy per se. An example of an alloy with a high stored energy of cold work is TD Nickel bar. This material has a fibrous grain structure (1 I diam by 10 to 15 p long), and the structure is stabilized by the ThO2 particles. Annealing at high temperatures, e.g., 3 hr at 1300°C, causes no recrystallization or grain growth.4 Previous work by the authors4 showed that the high -temperature creep behavior of TD Nickel could not be related to any simple dislocation theory of creep, and this probably was associated with the complex initial structure of the material.

The creep behavior of an aluminum -aluminum oxide alloy, A T 400, fabricated by compacting an atomized aluminum powder, extruding the compact, cold working, and recrystallizing the extrusion, was investigated. This alloy has a dispersion spacing of 1 . Previously Ansell and Weertman determined the steady-state creep rate of a recrystallized aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP-type alloy, MD 2100, with a 0.48-p dispersion. This alloy was found to have a steady-state creep rate of less than 10-6 min-1, too small to be measured accurately. By employing a more sensitive method of measuring creep rate, it was possible to determine the steady-state creep rate of AT 400 alloy, which is somewhat faster than that of MD 2100, at a series of temperature and applied stresses. Above a stress of Burger's vector, A = dispersion spacing, u = is a shear modulus) the rate follms an equation of the type: Steady-state creep rate K = A exp. where A is a constant, Q is the activation energy for sey-diffusion, and is the applied stress. At stresses lower than the steady-state creep rate drops off sharply and is no longer in agreement with this equation. This behavior is in good agreement with that predicted by the model for dispersion strengthened alloys in the stress and temperature range investigated. The absolute value of the creep rate is, however, four orders of magnitude lower than that predicted if the normal number of active dislocation sources are assumed to be present. It is concluded that in this SAP-type alloy the usual three-dimensional dislocation network is not present. Instead, short dislocation segments extending from one dispersed particle and terminating at a neighboring particle may act as dislocation sources. With this provision the creep model proposed by Ansell and Weertman reasonably accounts for the creep behavior which was observed. RECENTLY, Ansell and Weertman1 proposed a dislocation model from which they derived creep equations to describe the steady-state creep behavior of dispersion - strengthened alloys. Following Schoeck,2 they assumed that the rate controlling process for steady-state creep is the climb of dislocations over the dispersed particles. In order to verify their creep model, Ansell and Weertman determined the steady-state creep behavior of an aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP-type alloy, MD-2100, in both the fine-grained as-extruded, and coarse-grained recrystallized conditions. Since the grain size was the order of the dispersion-spacing, their model was not applicable for the as-ex- truded alloy. It should, however, be applicable to the coarse-grained recrystallized alloy. The results they obtained were rather unexpected. No meas-ureable steady-state creep was observed for the recrystallized MD-2100 alloy. If their model is correct, and if the second-phase particles act solely to hinder dislocation motion, then some measureable steady-state creep would have been expected. On this basis, they postulated that, in this SAP-type alloy, the main effect of the fine dispersion was to inactivate dislocation sources rather than to hinder the movement of dislocations. In order to understand more fully this unusual creep behavior, and to determine the validity of the model proposed,' the steady-state creep behavior of an aluminum-aluminum oxide recrystallized SAP-type alloy, with a somewhat coarser dispersion spacing, was investigated. The results of this study are presented in this paper.

A tutorial account of the tunnel effect between metal electrodes separated by a thin insulating film is presented. Energy diagrams of metal-insulator -metal sandwiches are briefly discussed, and the isothermal and thermal J-V characteristics for symmetric and asymmetric tunnel junctions are derived from a generalized expression. Experimental data from tunnel junctions are presented, and it is shown how, correlation between theory and experiment permits a determination of some of the oxide properties. Finally, the barrier heights in AT-Al2O3-A1 junctions determined by various inr3estigators are discussed. The object of this paper is to give a tutorial account of the electric-tunnel effect between metal electrodes separated by a thin insulating film and to illustrate its utility in the study of metal-oxide interfaces. This paper will emphasize the theoretical aspects of the electric-tunnel effect: however, a brief account of the more recent experimental work will be presented. A more comprehensive experimental study of the tunnel effect will be presented in the following paper by Drs. Pollack and Morris, see p. 497. We will open with a discussion of the energy diagrams for metal-insulator-metal junctions and what we mean by the electric-tunnel effect. Following this is an account of the theoretical studies of Sommerfeld and Bethe, and Holm, and the recently reported calculations on symmetric and asymmetric junctions using the generalized formula. The theoretical presentation is concluded with calculations on the temperature dependence of the tunnel J-V characteristic. In the experimental section, it is shown how barrier heights and thicknesses are determined by comparing the experimental data with the theory. Finally, the results of various investigators on the determination of the barrier heights in Al-Al2O,-A1 systems are discussed. I) POTENTIAL BARRIERS BETWEEN CLOSELY SPACED ELECTRODES Since it is necessary to supply energy to a metal in order to observe electron emission from its surface, it is evident that the potential energy of an electron within a metal is lower than that of an electron at rest outside the metal. It follows, then, that the electron must undergo a change in potential as it crosses the metal-vacuum interface. In the Sommerfeld1 free-electron theory of metals it is assumed that the free electrons, the electrons responsible for the electrical characteristics of metals, move in a constant potential environment in the metal, and are contained within the metal by a potential barrier at the metal-vacuum interface. It will be evident that the idea of a constant potential environment is a very idealized model, since the potential energy of an electron is influenced by all of the atoms and the other electrons within the metal; however, its use is justified by the many excellent results it gives.2 Fig. l (a) is the energy diagram of the model envisaged by Sommerfeld; the metal is represented by a potential-energy well of depth V,; the vacuum level represents the energy of an electron at rest outside the metal. At 0°K the electrons, which exist in pairs in discrete energy levels, fill up the well to an energy ?, the Fermi level. The distance, Vo - ?, from the Fermi level to the vacuum level is known as the work function of the metal, and represents the minimum energy required to free electrons from the interior of the metal at 0°K.

The methyl stretching vibrations for a series of normal xanthates, isoxanthates and normal amines were determined with the aid of an infrared spectro-photometer, and the results were compared with published information on the corresponding alcohols. The frequency shifts of methyl stretching vibrations may be attributed to the inductive effect of polar groups. The hydrogens in the shorter chain alkyl groups are somewhat polar and can be expected to interact with water molecules by hydrogen bonding. Contact angle, surface tension lowering, solubility, and critical micelle concentration appear to be related to the induced polarity of the alkyl groups. Traube's rule states that in homologous series of compounds solubility decreases and surface activity increases regularly with the size of the hydrocarbon group. Analyzing the work of transfer of a solute from solution to surface, Langmuir' interpreted this rule to mean that each CH2 group added to a molecule produced its effect independently of the others. It is also well known2 that the maximum equilibrium contact angle with sulfhydryl collectors is independent of the polar groups and of the sulfide minerals, and that it increases to a certain limit with the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl group. This observation is thought to demonstrate the orientation of the collector molecules at the sulfide surfaces. The dependence on the hydrocarbon chain length is usually explained as due to the screening of the force field of polar mineral surfaces.3-5 Here again, Langmuir's principle of independent surface action appears to be implied. Heteropolar compounds consist of nonpolar and polar groups, the former being the hydrocarbon group and the latter containing such electronegative atoms as O, N, S, P, or halogens. According to Palit6 the hydrogens in the alkyl groups are more electroposi- tive than in the paraffins owing to the negative inductive effect of the polar groups and a possibility that a hydrogen bond with water molecules ensues. Goto and Takenaka7 provided direct evidence of the inductive effect by measuring the shift of the C-H stretching vibrations of alcohols, acids, and alkyl bromides with an infrared spectrophotometer. Their approach appeared to be directly applicable to the studies of surface activity both at air-water and water-mineral interfaces encountered in flotation systems. The present article attempts to relate the C-H stretching vibrations of alkyl xanthates, alcohols, and amines with such flotation chemistry parameters as contact angle, surface tension lowering, solubility, and critical micelle concentration. MATERIALS AND METHODS Normal xanthates from methyl to octyl inclusive and the isopropyl, isobutyl, and isoamyl xanthates used in this investigation were prepared in the usual manner.8 Normal amine hydrochlorides with carbon chain lengths of 1, 2, 4, and 6 were from Distillation Products Industries, of 8 from Archer-Daniels-Midland Co., and of 10, 12, 14 and 16 from Armour and Co. Normal propylamines, pentylamines and heptylamines from Distillation Products Industries were used both as received and as hydrochloride formed by converting the amines according to the procedure described by Li9 Perkin-Elmer Model 521 and 621 infrared spectro-photometers were used to investigate the spectra in the frequency region of 3050 to 2800 cm-' with frequency scale expansion. The accuracy of the frequency readings was within + 1 cm-1. The KBr micropellet technique was used to prepare the xan-thate samples for measurements, and the halocarbon mull technique was used for amines and amine hydrochlorides. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 shows the CH3 asymmetric stretching vibrations as a function of the number of carbons in the alkyl group for normal xanthates, isoxanthates and amines. Silicon thin films were deposited by electron beam evaporation in an ultrahigh vacuum onto (0001) and (1102) sapphire substrates. Attempts were made to correlate the structural properties of the deposited silicon films with the following: 1) substrate orientation, 2) substrate surface condition, 3) substrate temperature, and 4) deposition rate. The substrate temperatures were varied between 500° and 1000°C and the deposition rates were varied between approximately 50 and 700A per min. The following sapphire surface treatments were investigated: 1) annealing in the ultrahigh vacuum at 1200° C; 2) heating in a hydrogen atmosphere at about 1350°C; and 3) etching with silicon by evaporating silicon onto sapphire substrates heated to 1200° or 1300°C. Twinned silicon films were occasionally formed at substrate temperatures between the 800° and 1000°C on unprocessed mechanically polished substrates; however, the reproducibility and crystallinity of these films were generally poor. Single-crystal and twinned silicon films were formed at substrate temperatures between 700° and 1000°C on substrates which were silicon-etched at 1300°C prior to deposition. Fiber texture films were formed at substrate temperatures between 500° and 700°C. The (111) lattice plane of the silicon single-crystal films was parallel to the (0001) sapphire plane and the (100) silicon plane was parallel to the (1102) sapphire plane. TECHNIQUES are well-established for growing single-crystal silicon thin films on sapphire by chemical methods.'-* Vacuum epitaxial techniques have a number of advantages over chemical epitaxial techniques in the fabrication of thin film microcircuits.5 One of the most significant is that vacuum techniques are compatible with well-established procedures for forming vacuum-deposited thin-film resistors, capacitors, and interconnections. Salatna, Tucker, and young6 recently reported the formation of relatively poor crystalline-quality silicon films on sapphire by electron beam evaporation in a vacuum of about 7 x 10-7 Torr. The purpose of the investigation described here is to determine the relationships between the structural properties of silicon thin films deposited on sapphire substrates by electron beam evaporation in an ultra-high vacuum and the following: 1) substrate orientation; 2) substrate surface condition; 3) substrate temperature; and 4) deposition rate. The substrate temperatures were varied between 500° and 1000° C and the deposition rates were varied between approximately 50 and 700A per min. Two orientations of sapphire were used: (0001) and (1102). The thick-nesses of the films were between 8000 and 16,000A. The morphology and crystallinity of the deposited films and substrate surfaces were investigated by optical microscopy, electron microscopy, and electron diffraction. APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE A cross section of the ultrahigh-vacuum thin-film evaporator is shown in Fig. 1. The bell jar is stainless steel and copper gaskets are utilized at all seals. High vacuum is attained by a 6001iter per sec ion pump and a titanium sublimation pump. Sorption pumps are used to rough the system to a pressure of about 10 µ prior to starting the ion pump. Vacuums in the 10- 10 Torr range were attained after baking the system at about 250°C for 8 hr. Vacuums in the 10-8 to 10-9 Torr range were maintained during silicon evaporation. The silicon charges, which were cut from p-type single-crystal boules which had resistivities between 2000 and 4500 ohm-cm, were placed in the water-cooled copper crucible of a 180 deg bent-beam 5-kw electron beam evaporator. During evaporation, a molten zone was formed in the top center of the silicon charge, and the portion of the silicon charge in contact with the water-cooled crucible remained solid. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been experimenting with flotation processes to separate the spodumene-beryl ores mined at Kings Mountain, N.C. The success to date as well as the present status of the process is discussed. Further experimentation is underway and studies will be made on the milling costs involved in the flotation process. The pegmatites of the Kings Mountain-Lincoln ton, N.C., area constitute the largest known domestic reserve of beryl and spodumene. The reserve is estimated to contain 90 million tons of pegmatic material with 1,280,000 tons of recoverable Li,O(lithia) as spodurnene.' The pegmatites also contain 0.4 to 0.5 pct beryl disseminated throughout the orebodies. The pegmatites may contain a potential reserve of 240,-000 tons beryl, equivalent to approximately 34,000 tons of BeO. Different flotation methods for separating beryl from feldspar or quartz, or both, have been developed by various investigators.2-7 On the other hand, published information is limited on concentration of spodumene-beryl ores. As the response of beryl and spodumene to flotation is essentially the same, a successful separation of the two minerals depends upon use of a selective depressant or a selective collector for one of the minerals. Several years ago, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, recognizing the need for developing a large domestic supply of strategic beryl, undertook studies to develop improved methods of recovering this mineral. Because of the low beryl content of the pegmatites, economic production of the beryl entails its recovery as a byproduct of spodumene flotation. Thus, the development of procedures that would provide for maximum recoveries of the spodumene, as well as the beryl, was a primary objective of the studies. Tests were made on run-of-mine ore and spodumene flotation tailing from the Foote Mineral Co.'s spodumene concentrator at Kings Mountain (Fig. 1). Pet-rographic analyses of the ore and flotation tailing are given in Table I. Detailed analyses and examinations of the ore and tailings revealed that the beryllium was present in the form of a low-alkali beryl. The crystals were small, rarely larger than 14-mesh diam, and were clear and colorless. About 10 pct of the Li20 content of the ore was present in the mica and feldspar components of the pegmatite. In some weathered ores the associated clays also contained small amounts of lithia. This is typical of pegmatites in the Kings Mountain area. LABORATORY TESTS In the past, a vigorous chemical treatment of the spodumene surfaces with acid or caustic soda has been considered essential for satisfactory selective flotation of the spodumene from the other minerals in pegmatites. Many tests were made during this investigation to determine if chemical treatment of the spodumene could be eliminated in favor of a reagent combination that would depress the other minerals while selectively floating the spodumene. A simple reagent combination and process was developed that gave better spodumene recovery and grade of concentrate than the more elaborate acid or caustic treatment methods previously used. The finely ground ore pulps were conditioned with either an ammonium, alkali, or alkaline earth lignin sulfonate and sodium fluoride, and the spodumene was floated and cleaned using oleic acid as the collector. The spodumene tailing was deslimed, conditioned with sulfuric acid and coco amine acetate, and floated to reject mica. The mica tailing was thickened and conditioned with hydrofluoric acid, then washed to remove the acid. The washed pulp was conditioned with sodium hydroxide for pH control, and the beryl was floated and cleaned with oleic acid as the collector. Table II summarizes the results of the laboratory test work. About 77 pct of the spodumene and 75 pct of the beryl were recovered from the pegmatitic material. The spodumene concentrate assayed 6.1 pct Li20 and 0.01 pct BeO, and the beryl product assayed 3.0 pct Li20 and 1.57 pct BeO. Similar results were ob-
