2.3-1. Introduction. The subject-"Preliminary Evaluation of Coal, Metallic and Industrial Mineral Deposits for Surface Mining'-seems at first glance to be definitive and not likely to be misinterpreted. Nevertheless, there are widely divergent opinions as to what is meant by "preliminary" and even as to what is meant by "evaluation." Some definition and qualification is necessary in order to provide a readily recognized basis for discussion. Evaluation evokes the idea of organizing extant data and judging its significance especially in the economic sense. It also may evoke the concept of the physical processes of acquiring the data that will characterize the deposit such as the geologic mapping, drilling, etc. Castle (5) considers that evaluation may embrace psychological aspects wherein human traits as, for example, over optimism might cause the evaluator to overlook obvious project weaknesses. In this chapter, evaluation is discussed primarily from the viewpoint of economically appraising a project from data available at a given point in time. The qualifying adjective "preliminary" is not easily defineable. In fact, some kind of evaluation proceeds, if not continuously, intermittently over the full span of exploration and early stages of development of a deposit. Bailly (1) comments: "Sometimes, before starting exploration in new areas or countries for a given commodity, we establish models to define what minimum combinations of re- coverable grade and tonnage are needed to give the minimum acceptable rate of return established by corporate policy. Then, before starting physical exploration in any target area we try and guesstimate optimistically what best 'geometry-grade-tonnage' can be expected. If these are acceptable in light of above minimum combinations, exploration is started as soon as funds are appropriated for the target area.''

Dispersion-strengthened aluminum products consist of an aluminum matrix containing finely distributed ceramic or intermetallic particles. Examples of the two types of product are SAP, in which the dispersed phase is aluminum oxide, and materials made from atomized aluminum alloy powder, in which the dispersed phase can be FeA1, particles.' A fundamental difference between the two types of product is that the elongation of aluminum/aluminum oxide products decreases with increasing temperature, whereas the elongation of aluminum- FeA13 products, like that of aluminum alloys, increases with increasing temperature. As regards the structural stability, aluminum/aluminum oxide products are stable to temperatures above 600° C as aluminum oxide does not react with aluminum, whereas prolonged heating at above 400°C of aluminum-FeA1, products leads to coarsening of the intermetallic phase and loss of strength.' On the basis of these results it is supposed that a dispersion-strengthened product combining strength, ductility, and stability at elevated temperatures may be obtained if the dispersed phase reacts with the matrix in such a way that the reaction does not proceed at any significant rate at the application temperature. Different ceramic or intermetallic compounds may be selected as the dispersed phase, and, as alloying of the matrix phase may also influence the reaction, many possibilities exist for each metal. In the present study, aluminum products containing different oxides have been examined. For a reaction to take place between the dispersed oxide and the aluminum the free energy of formation of the oxide (MeO) must be greater than that of aluminum oxide; the difference should, however, not be too great in order to limit the reaction rate. OIL-WELL depletion curves, to be of value, should show when a well or lease may no longer be operated at a profit. The difference, at any time, between the total expenditures and the total income of a lease or well may be called the lease status. Plotting this lease status against time will give a curve subject to more accurate and different interpretations than the barrels-time curves. According to the hypothetical barrels-time curves shown in Fig. 1, well A, at the end of 16 mo., is producing twice as much oil as well B and will continue to produce for another year whereas well B will cease producing in about 6 months. Ewers (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research organization, Melbourne, Australia)— Any attempt to elucidate further the meaning of the contact angle, particularly if it deals with the magnitudes of those mysterious quantities rsa and YRL, is certain to receive attention from those interested in the fundamentals of flotation. It is imperative, therefore, that attention should be drawn to a serious defect in the treatment by de Bruyn, Overbeek, and Schuhmann. Their Eq. 5 dy = — ld/u — Th2odiH2n states correctly the relationship between the change in surface free energy dy, the surface excesses Tx and Th2o of the components x and H2O and the changes du, and dph2o in the chemical potentials of these components. This equation applies for constant pressure and con- stant temperature and for the interface of the solid in contact with the solution of X. The relation remains valid when 1.1 is defined so that TH2O becomes zero and the equation becomes dr = — r:dur [17] From this equation de Bruyn et al. correctly concluded that increased adsorption of the collector at the liquid solid interface would reduce the interfacial energy ysl. The object of this graphic method is to estimate the weight of the casting, which is to be made from a given pattern, when the cross-section is not a uniform geometrical figure. Such an estimate is a very important guide to the foundryman, who would otherwise guess at the probable weight of a casting of new design, and, in trying to be on the safe side, would probably melt an unnecessary amount of iron. It is also an aid to the designer of a new car-wheel pattern, who must otherwise estimate from general experience the probable weight, have test-wheels made, and correct the pattern afterwards, so as to obtain the weight prescribed. For the method here described, an accurate drawing of the pattern is employed. This gives a closer result than a drawing of the wheel itself, for the following reasons: 1. Calculations based upon the actual dimensions of the wheel involve the erroneous assumption that the specific gravity of the casting is uniform throughout; and upon that basis the calculated weight would be wrong, because the amount of metal poured has shrunk in the mould, acquiring the highest density in the outside chilled portion, and growing less dense through the mottled to the gray portions. 2. Calculations based upon the dimensions of the pattern or " chiller " assume that the cooled metal will not have shrunk, but will have the volume of the pattern and a uniform density. These assumptions, though erroneous, counterbalance each other. For instance, the patterns and the chiller which give a wheel 33 in. in diameter when cold, are respectively 33.5 in. in diameter. This shows a shrinkage for wheel-iron of about & in. (ordinary gray pig is commonly assumed to shrink about 1/8 in.) per foot. Wheels cast in 33.5-in. chillers do not always have the

Edgar Hall, Silverspur, Queensland, Australia (communication to the Secretary*):—Dr. Douglas has written on this subject before, and his influence has had a powerful effect on the eide of freedom among the' younger generation of engineers. Moreover, it is not the first time that he has attributed the decline of the copper-smelting industry in Swansea to the secrecy maintained by the firms there engaged in smelting-operations. In this latter statement I think his conclusions are open to criticism. Whether the firms mentioned have suffered by their secrecy is their own business—I hold no brief for them ; but that the decline of the copper-industry at Swansea was inevitable seems to me to he proved conclusively by Dr. Douglas's own writings. In his paper on The Copper Situation,' Dr. Douglas says : "In comparing iron and copper mining,...it must be remembered that 2 tons of average iron ore from the most prolific source now available ... will make 1 ton of metal; whereas from 33 to 75 tons (say an average of 50 tons) of copper ore must be mined to produce 1 ton of copper." And further: "Last year's production of iron was made from approximately 50,000,000 tons of ore. Our copper mines, to yield a production of 900,000,000 pounds, must have handled approximately 22,000,000 tons of ore, or nearly half the quantity raised from our iron mines." Is not this the key to the whole situation ? In transporting the 50,000,000 tons of iron-ore, 25,000,000 tons of the metal iron were carried so much nearer to the market, but the transportation of 22,000,000 tons of copper-orc would have carried only 450,000 tons of the metal copper nearer to its ultimate destination. The transformation which steel undergoes in slow cooling, from the condition of austenite whelk above the transformation rage into that of pearlite plus either ferrite or cementite below that range, is subject to great lag. This transformation is essentially the pearlitizing of the austenite. Indeed the hardenillg of steel is due to this lag, which is made so great by extremely rapid cooling that a very large part of the transformation itself is restrained, so that the rapid cooling catches the metal in an only partly transformed state, that of martensite, and under favorable contditions even in an almost wholly untransformed state, as in the cases of Maurer's austenitic manganese steel. Hadfield's austemtic. manganese steel, 25 per cent. nickel steel, and other anstenitic alloy steels, arc austenitic even after slow cooling. It has long been known that this lag increases (1) with the rapidity of cooling, (2) with the presence of certain retarding elements, notably manganese and nickel, and (3) with the temperature from which cooling starts. The present inquiry touches the last of these influences, but incidentally it throws light on the first also. This influence of higher heating ill increasing lag manifests itself in different ways which, though they may at first seem unrelated, are in fact hut different aspects of one and the same thing. 11.3-1. Basic Principles. Communications systems available for application to surface mining operations can be divided into basic categories. These are: 1. Wired systems requiring some type of metallic conductor 2. Nonwired systems, or those commonly referred to as space-radio systems. Under the heading of wired systems, telephones of the ringer type utilizing magnetos were used in the early pit operations. These are still being used in underground mining operations where calling is accomplished by ringing a code made up of short and long rings. While the standard Bell Telephone Systems have not been applied extensively in underground mining, they have been used in open pit operations but have the disadvantage of using multiple pair cables which must be installed and maintained as the mining operations proceed. They have the advantage however, that when a Bell System is installed in a surface mining operation, communication is available not only within the operation but to any point in the world through the facilities of the world-wide Bell Systems. A second type of communication available is the audio system or public address system requiring the use of a special audio cable made up of shielded pairs for the loudspeaker and microphone circuits. Audio systems have one outstanding advantage over most telephone systems in that, with a high-powered amplifier, a paging call can be heard over and above the high ambient noise conditions usually found at a surface mining operation. However, they have the disadvantage of requiring special cable which must be installed and maintained. Another type of wired communication system available for surface mining is that of carrier frequency equipment similar to that used in underground mining operations. In this system, transmission is accomplished by means of a frequency modulated carrier that travels over the underground trolley wire, the rail on which locomotives travel, and adjacent telephone wires.

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the effect of feed size on the integral rate at which feed material is dry ground in a laboratory rod mill. The data are interpreted in terms of the Gaudin-Meloy distribution equation. The equation, Mo — Mt/t = Aoxo r-1, is found to hold for feed sizes smaller than some critical size or for grinding times larger than some critical time. It is shown that a feed grindability is related to this critical size, which appears to be the transition between predominately impact and predominately attrition grinding. Detailed research on feed size effects in comminution has been rather limited. Gaudin1 ground single-sieve fractions of quartz for extended time periods (four hours) in a laboratory ball mill. His work, which was designed to study the nature of size distributions, showed that there is a critical feed size above which comminution occurs primarily by attrition. For his system, the critical size was about 2-mm when using 22-mm balls. In a more recent investigation2 single-sieve fractions of quartz were ground in a laboratory rod mill for constant time periods (15 min) to determine how feed size affects the grindability of the material. This work showed that grindability is essentially independent of feed size in the rod mill after this moderately long grinding period. To further clarify this observation, a study in which feed size and grinding times are varied over a fairly wide range, and particularly, a study of the dependence of the integral rate of grinding on feed size during the initial stages of rod milling is necessary. In June, 1911, the writer spent a few days in studying the economic geology of the vicinity of Park City. During this rather hurried visit a number of specimens of ore were collected, which have since been examind. The results of these investigations show that bournonite (PbCu-SbSa) is present in the ores in greater or less quantity. This fact has never before been reported, as far as can be learned. The failure to recognize this mineral is due to its similarity to tetrahedrite, with which it has probably been confused during a long period of years. Jamesonite (Pb2sb2s6) has been reported from the region in a rather doubtful manner, but the writer has seen it in notable amounts from several mines, and can offer the first analysis of this mineral from the district. Calamine (HzZn2SiO5) was found at one mine and has never been ecognized and reported from the district. Geogbaphy and Geology Park City, Utah, is located at an elevation of about 7,000 ft. above sea level on the eastern slope of the Wasatch mountains. It is situated approximately 25 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. ' The geology and ore deposits have been described in detail by Bout well and Woolsey.' The mines visited are situated south-southeast from the town. The Silver King Coalition mine is located in Woodside gulch about 1 mile southeast of Park City, at an altitude of about 8,100 ft. The other mines visited were the Daly West and Quincy, which are in Empire canyon about 2 miles sontheast of the town, at elevations of 8,300 to 8,500 ft. respectively. The Daly Judge tunnel goes into the mountain from Empire canyon about 1 mile south of the city, at an altitude of 7,700ft.

The Eagle mine is situated in the Kerber Creek mining district, Bonanza, Saguache County, Colo. The climate and topography of this district arc similar to those of mining camps of the Rocky Mountain region that lie 9000 to 12,000 ft. above sea level. The district is at the northeasterly edge of the San Juan volcanic region, in which successive Tertiary lavas have built up a high plateau resting upon earlier sedimentary formations, or the underlying pre-Cambrian complex. The latter was exposed in places by erosion previous to the eruptions. In the Bonanza district, proper, only volcanic formations, andesites and latites, are found. Dr. H. B. Patton,1 in his survey of the district, discriminates between several varieties of lavas and maps these as distinct flows. They are local variations within the same lava and it is impossible to determine any distinct line of demarkation between them. Structurally they are members of the same flow. There are three general types of vein occurrences: 1. Lead-zinc-copper-silver-gold veins in well-defined fissures with a quartz gangue; ill these, the various sulfides show a zonal arrangement. 2. Massive gray copper ores high in silver, in irregular fractures in the form of small lenses and pockets, in which little or no quartz is found. 3. Manganiferous quartz veins very low in silver and gold at the surface which, with depth, become important silver veins containing subordinate amounts of gold. These veins have a quartz gangue with an abundance of Phodochrosite. The silver is associated with small amounts of sphalerite, galena, and pyrite; fluorite also is present. The Eagle is the only mine that has been developed in the manganiferous quartz type of vein. It was discovered ill the fall of 1582, but little more than assessment work was done on the property for a number of

The effect of small additions of silver on the actiziity of zinc in dilute solution with molten bismuth has been determined ill the range 450° to 650°C. Experimental measurements were made in a multi-electrode galvanic cell. All zinc activities showed large positive deviations from Raoult's Law. The results are expressed in terms of the interaction parameter EJ, as defined by Wagner. In the binary Zn-Bi system, Henry's Law was followed at zinc concentrations below 5 mol pct, thus indicating that the binary or self-interaction parameter of zinc in bismuth is essentially zero. The Henry's Law con- THE determination of thermodynamic interaction parameters requires accurate knowledge of solute activities in the dilute-solution region. Dealy and Pehlke1 have summarized the basis for interaction relations, discussed some theoretical implications, and presented a compilation of interaction parameters calculated for molten nonferrous alloys from stant ranged from 2.43 at 650°C to 3.96 at 450°C. The binary zinc activities were consistent with published data for higher zinc concentrations . The ternary interaction parameter ranged from -1.90 at 650°C to -3.30 at 450° C, varying linearly with the reciprocal of the absolute temperature. The negative value for the parameter reflects the fact that addition of silver decreases the activity of zinc in solution with bismuth. data available in the literature. Most of the data were for two-component systems from which only the self-interactions, Ei, could be calculated. Concentration ranges were often such that a considerable extrapolation was required for calculations at lnfinite dilution. The data for ternary systems were quite limited and often unavailable in suitable systematic fashion—thus few values of the parameter e| could be obtained. ACTIVE drilling operations for oil were carried on during the summer of 1923 in various parts of, western Canada, particularly in Alberta. During the early part of the summer, interest centered in southern Alberta, in the Coutts area, just north of the producing Kevin-Sunburst field of Montana; but on Nov. 14 a strike of oil by British Petroleums Ltd. at its well near Wainwright, 120 mi. east of Edmonton, diverted public attention to a new field. According to present estimates, this well has a possible production of from 60 to 100 bbl. a day; the oil is 15° Be. with an asphaltic base and is obtained from a sand at the depth of 2019-2036 ft. The oil stands at 1700 ft. in the casing and there is sufficient gas pressure to cause it to flow when the well is opened. The oil horizon is in a sandstone in rocks of Colorado age. It is known that there is a terrace structure of which the western edge extends in a northwesterly direction from the vicinity of Hardisty to Viking, where it probably swings more to the north. At Viking a small dome-like structure on this terrace gives rise to an important gas field. Wainwright lies directly northeast of Hardisty. The exact structure in the Wainwright field is unknown. At Fabyan, 6 mi. northwest of Wainwright, the Imperial Oil Co.1 last year brought 1n a large gas well estimated at 14,000,000 cu. ft.; the escaping gas sprayed a small amount of heavy black oil over the derrick. The gas was obtained at a depth of 2727 ft., deeper drilling encountering a water sand. The results of drilling in the Wainwright field are encouraging for future development.

The little stamp-mill in the mining laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the work done by it have been well described by Prof. R. H. Richards and E. E. Bugbee in a paper read at the Albany meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, February, 1903.' As run for student class-work the mill contains a feeder, stamps, plate, and vanner. Results in the past indicate that the work of these machines is just as efficient as that of a regular mill handling the same class of ore. It has been the custom to obtain ore principally from Nova Scotia, mainly because it is the nearest source of supply, and also because there is a considerable saving in freight-cost as compared with other districts. The gold in Nova Scotia ores is notoriously coarse, and for this reason it is almost impossible to obtain satisfactory results by sampling and fire-assay, unless an extremely large lot of ore is crushed and all of the contained gold pellets are saved. A very interesting and most extraordinary example of this fact has been presented by a recent run in the Technology stamp-mill. Since the capacity of the mill is about 60 kg. per hr., and since in about 5-hr. run the students in any one section have an opportunity to make the necessary study of machines, it usually happens that several runs are made from one lot of ore. When the shipment is received it is first dried and weighed, put through the Blake breaker, set at 1 or 1.5 in., and the crushed product is piled in a cone on the sampling-floor. It is known qualitatively that the recrystallization behavior of platinum is dependent upon the amount and particularly the nature of impurities present, the amount of prior cold-work and the annealing time and temperature, but published data are limited. A study of the effects of cold-work and annealing temperature on the hardness of a sample of very pure platinum was undertaken to supply part of this information. Conclusions 1. The platinum used in the experiments had a probable platinum content of 99.99+ per cent, and had the following mechanical properties in the completely softened condition: Vickers hardness number, 39.4; ultimate tensile strength, 19,340 lb. per sq. in.; proportioilal limit, very low; elongation, 37.5 per cent in 2 inclles. 2. The effect of cold-rolling on the hardness is shown in Fig. 1. The hardness increases rapidly up to 10 to 15 per cent reduction and more slowly up to about 75 per cent reduction, beyond which it increases more rapidly. 3. The recrystallization temperatures for a 15-min. anneal, after cold-rolling 19, 39.5, 50.8, 66, 80.5 and 89.5 per cent reduction in thickness, are approximately 765°, 700°, 635°, 600°, 545' and 425°C., respectively. 4. The recrystallized grain size of this platinum is a function of the percentage of cold reduction, being larger the lower the percentage of cold-work. 5. Little or 110 grain grourtll resulted from subjecting recrystallized samples to higher temperatures or annealing for longer times. Prior Work As already mentioned, data on the recrystallization of platinum are scarce. Results of preliminary research on the use of small diameter water jets at high pressure for cutting rocks has demonstrated the possibility of effective cutting of anthracite. Detailed research has, therefore, been conducted at the Skotchinsky Institute of Mining to study the dynamics and structure of the small water jets and the mechanism by which they cut coal. One of the objects of this research was to obtain data for the design of a machine for cutting rock, based on the same principles as that for cutting coal. The productivity of water jet mining machines depends on the hydro- dynamic parameters of the jet. Therefore, the research on small diameter water jets was directed, initially to a study of the nature of the variation of these parameters, and to obtain a profile of dynamic pressure distribution over the section of the jet. As has been confirmed previously, the required jet pressure (to cut coal) lies in the range of 100 to 500 atmospheres. These pressures were utilized for the research. The diameter of the nozzle was changed as ~follows; 0.97; 1.24; 1.5; 2.17; 2.87; and 3.57 mm. Graphs showing dynamic pressures for each nozzle diameter and varied axial dynamic pressure were obtained over distances ranging from 2 to 70 cm from the nozzle. One of the most important hydrodynamic parameters of a jet, closely related to the dynamics of jet disturbance in air, is the magnitude of the axial dynhmic pressure. A study of the variation in this pressure with increasing distance from the nozzle led to the separation of the jet into three specific parts, which differ from each other not only in the nature of the change in dynamic pressure, but also in structural properties.

INTRODUCTION The chapter discusses the procedures and operations starting with the actual training of operations personnel with respect to a grinding mill circuit and a typical check-out and start-up of a grinding circuit before turning over the operating circuit to production personnel. For the purposes of this paper, it will be assumed that the mill circuit installation is at a new location or a new operation at an existing operation. Expansion of an existing grinding facility would probably require less time-consuming and less costly procedures than those that will be outlined here. There are numerous arrangements and types of equipment that can be used for grinding circuits. For example, the grinding could be wet or dry. The grinding mill could be a rod or ball mill or some combination. The circuit could be open or closed. The closed circuit classification could be accomplished with rake classifiers, spiral classifiers, cyclones, stationary screens, or vibrating screens. To limit the discussion, the grinding circuit shown on Figure I will be discussed. The circuit includes a dry ore feed by a belt conveyor (feeder) to a wet ball mill. The ball mill discharges to a cyclone feed pump box and pump. The pump feeds a cyclone type classifier with the cyclone underflow returning to the ball mill feed and cyclone overflow being the required grinding circuit product. For the purposes of this paper, it will also be assumed that the extensive overall preparation necessary for every start-up has been accomplished. These preparations are only outlined here as they have been adequately dealt with in recent papers. (1), (2), (3) The items in these preparations would include. 1. Appointment and indoctrination of the start-up organization. 2. Integration of the start-up into the overall project schedule. 3. Development of the specific start-up schedule. 4. Budget determination and monies appropriation.

THE study of the flow of oil and gas mixtures through oil-bearing formations has received special attention from the petroleum industry within the past few years, and has resulted in a series of research projects based upon various phases of the flow of heterogeneous fluids through porous media. Obviously, the low cost of producing oil during the flowing life of a well makes it desirable to obtain production by natural flow as long as possible and to effect a maximum recovery of oil and gas by the utilization of reservoir energy through efficient methods based upon a thorough knowledge of reservoir characteristics. Despite the extensive research that has been carried out, there is little information available on the behavior of oil and gas mixtures flowing through reservoir formations. This makes it impossible to predetermine the optimum operating condi-tions for flowing wells. A differential pressure must exist in the reservoir in order to induce flow toward the well. It is a well established fact that with homogeneous fluids the relation of pressure drop to linear distance traveled is a straight-line function as long as the flow is viscous. However, in regard to gas-saturated oils, a number of investigators1,3,4 have reported that the flow characteristics are materially altered as some of the lighter hydrocarbons are liberated from the oil to form gas while the fluid passes through the reservoir. Most of the work done has been concerned primarily with steady-state flow of liquid-gas mixtures. Cloud1 has studied the effects of saturating crude petroleum oils with various gases, together with the resultant pressure gradients under steady flow conditions, noting that unsaturated oils flowed faster and yet maintained lower pressure gradients than saturated oils.
