The mineral exploration and extraction industries have gained major cost and efficiency benefits from the use of computers. However these industries are now at a cross-roads with two seemingly disparate developments - that of an increasing number of complex geoscience databases and, at the same time, the merging of all known data for the particular regions at minimal cost. These two developments can be managed by the development and of an industry accepted geoscience data model and dictionary. This will provide a common basis of understanding for geoscience data through a common language and a common structure for geoscience information. Integration of specialist systems and databases can then proceed efficiently. The development of a data model is going ahead with consensus from the mining industry. This is a joint government and industry funded project and managed through the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association, AMIRA. AMIRA is a well known research broker to the Australian mining industry obtaining sponsorship for projects both from private and government groups. The AMIRA project, P431, called the Geoscience Data Model, is to be the Australian standard data model for geoscience disciplines. The requirement for a standard geoscience data model has been recognised in Australia for some time. In October 1991, the Australian Government Geoscience Database Policy Advisory Committee (GGDPAC) established a Geoscience Data Standards Working Group which drafted a comprehensive list of data categories of the geoscience area. An AMIRA project called AMDEX was established to develop a transfer standard for the mining industry data at about the same time as this committee was in operation. The first AMDEX sponsors meeting was held in May 1991. It was proposed to use the US Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS) as the basis to transfer mining data in AMDEX. A limited data model of mining data to be transferred was developed for the AMDEX standard under SDTS. The Australian Geological Survey Organisation (AGSO) saw the need to extend this and develop a complete data model for the geosciences and proposed this as a new project to AMIRA. This was strongly supported by GGDPAC which lead to sponsorship of the project from most state geological surveys. The Geoscience Data Model can be broken down into separate data models for a number of geoscience themes and sponsorship obtained so far will enable models to be developed for a comprehensive set of themes selected by the project sponsors. Further sponsorship is required to enable a more complete coverage of the geoscience area to be developed. Sponsorship for the Geoscience Data Model has been strong from the geological surveys and there was some effort by GGDPAC to promote the project in these organisations. An Australian geoscience data model is of immediate use to the geological surveys in assisting the standardising of huge quantities of geoscience data held by government agencies and it is preferable that this be an Australia-wide standard.

The Mons Cupri Cu-Pb-Zn deposit is situated within a complex Archaean volcanic sequence dominated by rhyolitic fragmental rocks. This sequence is underlain by a 150 m group of rhyolitic ash flow tuffs with minor conglomerate and sandstone, and is overlain by approximately 180 m of dacite and andesite flows. The Mons Cupri sequence itself consists of several elongate or circular rhyolite domes, flanked by rhyolitic fragmental rocks ranging up to 400 m in thickness away from the domes. The lithology of clasts (typically 1 cm to 1.5 m in size) provides strong evidence that the flanking fragmental unit was derived by explosive eruptions associated with the rhyolite domes. An approximately 15 m thick shale horizon, bleached and silicified at its base, overlies both the rhyolite domes and the frag- mental unit. A south-dipping chloritic pipe-like body, with near-surface dimensions of 1,000 by 250 m and narrowing at depth to produce a cone-shaped cross section, lies within the rhyolitic frag- mental rocks about 250 m north of the largest rhyolite'dome in the Mons Cupri vicinity. Its east west elongation parallels that of the rhyolite dome. Ghost fragments indicate that the material in this fissure is a severely chloritized derivative of the rhyolitic frag- mental unit. An automated method, which is believed to be the fastest in the world and which can be used by mineralogically-untrained technical assistants, has been developed for the rapid location of native gold particles and other gold minerals down to 1 pm in size in ores, concentrates, and tailings using a scanning electron microscope. Searching of a 25 mm diameter polished block in 1 pm steps usually requires 3-4 h. Examples of the location of native gold and gold tellurides in drill core sections, in crushed ore samples and gravity and flotation concentrates, and in various metallurgical test products are given. The results have application in ore exploration, in guiding metallurgical test programmes, and in assessing metallurgical per- formance in testwork and in operating plants.

The applicability of four empirical strength criteria for rock masses, namely, Hoek and Brown, Bieniawski - Yudhbir et al., Ramamurthy - Arora and Johnston - Sheorey et al. has been tested against the triaxial test data for jointed plaster of Paris of Arora. The following modified Bieniawski criterion shows best agreement with the triaxial test data for jointed plaster of Paris: 611=1+B(63)O.825 acm 6cm where a1= axial compressive stress at failure, MPa; a3 = confining pressure, MPa; acm = uniaxial compressive strength of jointed plaster of Paris, MPa; and B = - 3.988 + 9.674 (aim ) -0.185 The modified Bieniawski strength criterion can be used to estimate the strength of a coal pillar, based on a knowledge of stress distribution in it.

Kidston Gold Mines Limited (70 per cent Placer Pacific and 30 per cent Public Shareholders) has been mining the Wises Hill Pit since late-1984. The Wises Hill Deposit is a large low grade gold deposit and as such is highly sensitive to economic parameters. The uniformity of the orebody has allowed a bulk mining method to be used, with minimal dilution. Total reserves defined to-date are 64 160 OOOT at a grade of 1.60 g/t gold. Mineable reserves remaining as of January 1992 are 36 357 OOOT at a grade of 1.28 g/t gold.Mining investigations to reduce the impact of lower gold prices, the effect of decreasing headgrade and increasing mining costs have focused on wall steepening.

Ok Tedi Mine is a high production open pit porphyry copper mine located high in the Star mountains of Papua New Guinea. The mine produces an average of 160 000 tonnes of ore and waste daily at a 1:1 strip ratio. Full scale drilling and blasting began in 1988, prior to which time all material was ripped and dozed.Drilling and blasting procedures at Ok Tedi underwent a major review commencing mid-1989. As a result of a mutual commitment by management at Ok Tedi and the mines explosives supplier ICI, significant reductions in overall blasting costs have been realised. These cost savings are primarily the result of the introduction of air bags, expanded patterns and better field execution.

Despite extensive oil exploration in"Western Australia over the past 12 years no commercial oil fields have yet been found. A total ' of 66 test wells have been drilled throughout the State but only Rough Range No.s.. 1 and 1A have produced oil in significant quantities. Active oil exploration is now in progress in the" Canning, Carnarvon, Perth, Bonaparte Gulf and Officer Basins. Test wells have been drilled' in ,all of these except the Officer Basin, where the subsurface stratigraphy is still unknown. Large .areas of the other four have hot yet been drilled. It, is- probable that. commercial oil deposits will eventually be found' in these basins as they contain thick marine sequences, and have structures 'suitable for.,the. entrapment of oil. .

The extension of theoretical and laboratory studies of the roasting of tantalite and cassiterite concentrates from Greenbushes Tin Limited to pilot and semi- commercial plant developments is detailed. A rotary pilot furnace was used to prove the feasibility of the process and a semi- commercial plant was constructed at Greenbushes to produce large quantities of roasted calcine. The additions and conditions of the laboratory study were employed to achieve marketable grades of calcine from the two materials. As well as producing calcines with less than 0.1% Sb, most of the tin in tantalite was recoverable to a separate fume product. Tin fumed during cassiterite roasting on a semi-commerical scale amounted to less than 1% of the tin in feed.

BHP Steel International's Newcastle blast. furnaces have operated since their caimissioning on cake based on local low rank coals. In the early 1960's Newcastle coke was believed to be the weakest in the world. Newcastle coke now supports a blast furnace operation with a productivity of 2.1 t/d.rn IV, a fuel rate of 490 kg/t and a coke rate of 415 kg/t. This coke is nuudv from blonds of lcxni and southern Sydney basin coals with blend Ro nex in the range 0.94 - 1.01. Blast furnace performance in periods of differing coal blends is conjured. South Bulli is the oldest and largest underground coal mine in Australia. Two longwall units are in operation and current production is 2.5 to 3 million tonnes of run of mine product per year with a workforce of 600. Prior to 1984 a workforce of around 1,200 produced 1.5 million tonnes. Advances in technology can. of course, account for some of this gain, but the changes made in the human resources area are also seen as playing a major role in South Bulli emerging as a reasonably stable operation.The human resources strategy adopted recognises the value of the workforce and is aimed at not only fostering cooperation as all levels, but also making employees aware of the direct contribution they can make to the success of the enterprise.

Coal has been mined in New South Wales for nearly 200 years and prior to 1970 the vast majority of this coal was mined from underground mines using bord and pillar or similar systems.Since 1970 there have been two notable changes in coal production trends in New South Wales as can be seen from Figure 1.1. The steady growth in coal mined by open cut methods. Open cut output grew from about seven per cent of the State's output in 1970/71 to 43 per cent in 1990/91.2. The steady growth in coal mined by the longwall method. longwall output grew from negligible amounts in 1970/71 to 48 per cent of underground production in 1990/91. mines operating longwall units produced 61 per cent of underground production in 1990/91.

Warrego copper ore characteristically contains 0.05-0.2% bismuth, which on upgrading produces a concentrate of approximately 1.3% bismuth. Early smelting of this concentrate (1973) was accomplished in a flash furnace (eliminating 92% of the bismuth in the con- centrate) and Top Blown Rotary Convertors (eliminating 85% of the bismuth in the matte). However 1.3% bismuth was considered the max- imLun bismuth level that could be treated. Geological evidence indicated that the bismuth level in~the copper ore would increase and that the bismuth level in the Warrego ore would be 0.3-0.7% bismuth. Treating these ores would produce a copper concentrate with bismuth levels far in excess of those accept- able to the smelter and still produce low bismuth content blister (limit 0.03% bismuth).

1991 saw the completion of a three-year $1.1 million research and development program in mineral sands beneficiation, funded in two associated projects by the Australian mineral sands industry through AMIRA, and carried out by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre. It is believed to be the largest R&D project in mineral sands ever conducted by a university research group. It covered dry plant operation, and delivered several products to the industrial sponsors, including: ò A detailed characterisation of the radiation properties, mineralogy and size distribution of inhaleable dust arising in dry plants. ò New process models of magnetic and electrostatic separators. ò New on-line instruments for elemental assay (in association with AMDEL) and bulk conductivity measurements of dry process streams. ò Demonstration and evaluation of the Magstream magnetohydrostatic separation technology.

Construction of twin stacked railway tunnels through mixed ground conditions in the heavily populated urban environment of Hong Kong, including tunnelling in poor ground conditions, with low cover and under or adjacent to sensitive structures with minimal impact was the challenge presented by the tunnelling section of the Kowloon Southern Link project. This paper details how twin 1.1 km tunnels of 7.0 m internal diameter were driven by Mixshield tunnel boring machine (TBM) in mixed ground through one of the exclusive shopping and hotel districts in Kowloon. The paper addresses the challenges required to be considered and managed for the success of the project, including ground conditions, TBM selection, Mixshield TBM operation, settlement monitoring and control, ground- borne noise and vibration, proximity to utilities, buildings, roads and operating railways.

Amongst the Pacific Rim countries, Papua New Guinea (PNG) is the leader in new gold discoveries and developments leading to new production. PNG has shown a dramatic increase in gold production when taken from a base of about 600 000 ounces in 1984 to 1 160 000 ounces in 1986. 1987 is expected to produce about 1 500 000 ounces and new planned developments will give further large increases. PNG's leading position when compared with neighboring Pacific Rim countries is only partly due to its favorable geological setting along the "Rim of Fire" epithermal zone. More important have been well-thought-out mining development legislation and good administration as well as consistent taxation and royalty policies. A stable political environment and a track record of new mining developments over the last 15 years, both pre and post Independence in 1975, have also been important factors in encouraging the new developments. Early Portuguese explorers associated the New Guinea mainland with gold as early as 1525 but it was not un,11 1R77 that a small ill-fated gold rush gave the first recorded production at Laloki near Port Moresby. Modest but commercial discoveries were made in the outer islands and coastal mainland regions from 1888 to 1926. In 1922 William "Sharkeye" Park found gold at Edie Creek and this led to major discoveries at Wau and Bulolo which were the first large scale commercial gold Operations.

SINCE writing the above-mentioned paper, some further indicator cards have been taken from the No. 1 machine, and the writers believe that a reproduction of these cards will be interesting as illustrating the performance of the machine after fifteen month steady running, night and day, seven days per week and twenty-four hours per day, at the average speed of fifty-seven revolutions per minute (see Fig. 1, page 60). For the past twelve months no adjustment have been made in the valve setting, and the only repairs have been in connection with the springs of the poppet valves, and these but slight, the springs latterly having been removed. The cards illustrated were taken with one indicator, and, therefore, are not simultaneous, andmay show to some extent the yariations of individual strokes, and with that qualification may be taken as typical of the machine's average performance.In connection with some feed-water measurements of the winding engines a rough test was run with the two compressors, the Riedler and the Corliss, coupled to the condenser, and running at fifteen and fifty-seven revolutions per minute respectively, with the result of 15.9 pounds of steam per indicated horse power per hour. This result, though only approximate, seems to indicate that the No. 1 machine is running under the guaranteed consumption, and that it is capable of maintaining this under the severe conditions of everyday practice.

Two blasthole density logging programmes have been conducted on the Mt Whaleback iron ore mine to evaluate the use of this type of logging as an aid to blast pattern design. The first programme also involved the setting up of a Density Test facility with which to calibrate the density probe. The programmes indicated that about 22-23 blastholes can be consistently logged per day at a cost of $1.30 per metre. Even though this is only half the rate required to log the average number of blastholes drilled daily on Mt Whaleback, testwork indicated that no significant loss of accuracy results if only half the holes in a pattern are logged. The major results of the programmes were: 1. The density range for black pyritic Shale is 2.2-2,9 g/cc. 2. The density range for soft to medium hard BIF is 2.1-3.0 g/cc. 3. The density range for hard BIF is 3.0-3.6 g/cc. 4. The front row blastholes show consistently lower densities than the main body holes due to blast damage. 5. A low density zone extending to a maximum depth of 6 m occurs at the top of most blastholes and results from blast damage from the bench above. We investigated the duration of formation of the giant Ok Tedi porphyry copper-gold deposit in Papua New Guinea using zircon SHRIMP U-Pb dating. The intrusions that host the Cu-Au mineralisation have a maximum age of 1.43 ¦ 0.22 Ma. Since previously published K-Ar dates on the same intrusion constrain the last thermal event at 1.11 ¦ 0.05 Ma, we conclude that the magmatic-hydrothermal event that produced the deposit lasted ~0.45 million years (Myr). A comparison of Ok TediÆs calculated volatile fluxes with those from arc volcanoes and active mineralising hydrothermal systems suggests that the efficiency of metal deposition is a key factor in determining the duration of deposit formation.
