Most of the gold reef mined today in South Africa is approximately 1 m in width with slopes about 30 m long. To prevent production interruptions it is essential that the stopes should not be blasted in sections. The shortage of experienced labour and arduous working conditions at the face dictate the need for simple blasting techniques.Hence, a pyrotechnic blasting system of sequential firing is in use at present, although research work to improve this technique is in progress.

The Hermit Islands are situated at 145¦ E 1 30'S in the Bismarck Sea approximately 200km WNW of Manus Island. They are dominated by basalt flows, one of which yielded a K/Ar isotopic date of 3.4 + 0.05Ma. All basalts examined were olivine-bearing, but one sample also contained hornblende. Although many outcrops were weathered, no evidence of pervasive hydrothermal alteration was observed on any islands and non-weathered rocks are petrographically fresh and many retain glass.

Pasminco has tested a Valmet ES1 ceramic disc vacuum filter at its Broken Hill concentrators. On lead and, particularly, zinc concentrates at the ZC Mine the filter performed well but on North Mine lead concentrate problems were experienced with deposition on the disc, which resisted both ultrasonic and acid cleaning. A preliminary financial analysis showed that the application of the filter at the ZC concentrator was worth pursuing. Accordingly an ES30 machine has been hired for plant evaluation.

Through partnering with mining customers, DYNO has been able to develop some specific technologies that benefit blasting operations particularly in underground mining. Some of these areas are: 1. Cost allocation and product tracking systems; 2. Borehole video surveys of breakthrough blastholes; 3. Borehole video photography for logging VRM blastholes; 4. Toe-load uphole loading for sublevel cave mining operations; 5. 3D blast modelling for underground ring blasting. This paper outlines these developments in the context of a Canadian underground metalliferous mine.

The West Fork project is located in Reynolds County, Missouri, in the mineralized zone referred to as the Viburnum Trend. The West Fork orebody has a calculated ore re- serve of 13 600 000 tonne (15 000 000 st) con- taining 5.5 per cent lead, 1.2 per cent zinc, and recoverable values of copper and silver. A total of 64 600 tonne (71 200 st) of lead concentrate and 11 300 tonne (12 500 st) of zinc concentrate will be produced annually. The mill was designed to operate at an average capacity of 3450 tonne/day (3800 st/day), based on a 95 per cent availability factor. The mill will operate 24 hours a day, 5 days a week, with maintenance performed, as needed, on weekends. The mine will operate on an identical schedule; but the underground, pri- mary crushing will operate on a six hour/shift, three shift/day schedule. The 1.07m x 1.22m (42in x 48in) jaw crusher will produce a minus 20cm (8 in) material at an average rate of 191 tonne/h (211 st/h). The jaw crusher has almost twice the throughput capacity required, but the decision to install that size of crusher was based on the need to handle over sized rock in the ore.The coarse crushed ore will discharge into a 180 tonne (200 st) skip pocket, which will allow up to a one hour surge capacity prior to hoisting. Hoisted ore will discharge into a 900 tonne (1000 st) storage bin located adjacent to the headframe. The skip pocket and coarse ore silo comprise the total ore storage capacity. The concept of having no intermediate fine ore storage between the secondary crushing and grinding sections was borrowed from the Brushy Creek Mill of St. Joe Minerals, which operates adjacent to the West Fork property. Integration of the secondary crushing and grinding circuits has worked ' successfully for years at the Brushy Creek Mill. The most obvious advantage to eliminating the intermediate fine ore storage is'capital expen- diture savings. The capital expenditure savings include the cost of silos, feeders, and the cost of additional conveyor length and eleva- tion. Savings in operating costs will also be gained, particularly in reduced maintenance costs. Other factors which influenced the decision to eliminate fine ore storage were the simplicity of the secondary crushing sec- tion and the limited area available for con struction of the facility

Operation of a pilot heavy medium separation plant allows flexibility of operation not normally possible in an operating plant. Much useful data can be obtained, although some limitations apply. Projects carried out at AMDEL have included HMC separations at 1.5 to 3.6 specific gravity, comparative operation of HMC and DWP separators and the use of fine feed and product screens. Investigations of this type have provided a considerable amount of information on HMS plant performance and characteristics under a wide range of operating conditions.

The variation of austenitic grain size with temperature for the steels XKSlSO and XK9261 was determined using the vacuum ctching technique.It is shown that the effect of temperature on the mean grain intercept is relatively small, up to approximately 950°C. Above this temperature the rate of increase of grain size rises sharply.Within the limits of the 1-4 hr vacuum etching times used the effect of time at temperature is relatively small on the ASTM grain size of the steels.

The Osborne copper-gold deposit was discovered in North-West Queensland in 1989. Underground production activities commenced at Osborne deposit in April 1996. This paper will examine technical and operational aspects of the underground mine during its development to a 1.2 Mtpa operation . Technical aspects discussed include geology, mine design and mining methods, equipment fleet selection and capital infrastructure. Operational aspects discussed include the evolution and performance of the integrated work teams that are utilised at Osborne to perform all mining and maintenance activities.

The Middleback Ranges are a series of parallel northsouth ridges on the eastern side of the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, about 20 miles inland from the Spencer Gulf, as shown in Fig. 1. They extend for some 20 miles across the centre of the County of York. North of them, on the same line of strike, in, the County of Manchester, is a disconnected series of lesser which ends in the Iron Monarch-Iron Knob ridge, the principal iron ore locality. These ridges are referred to in the following pages as an integral part of the Middleback Ranges.The deposits of hematite which outcrop in these ranges (Fig. 1) form the most important group of iron ore bodies in Australia, and are exploited by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company. The largest of them is the Iron Monarch (Fig. 6) .H: The next largest are the Iron Duke, the Iron Prince and Iron Baron. The Iron Knob, Iron Duchess, the North and South Iron Knights, Iron Queen, and the small body south of it, the Kimba Lease, and the deposits in the Cook's and Ash Leases, are all smaller.Numerous small lens-like bodies of hematite occur throughout the ridges, but are not of sufficient size to be of commercial use. At present only the Iron Monarch and the Iron Prince bodies are being worked. Chromite ores have a long history of low pricing and for AustraliaÆs only chromite mine this has been a particularly tough challenge, especially as the mine is located nearly 400 km from the nearest port at Port Hedland. A stockpile of chromite fines (-16 mm) has been built up since 2003. The opportunity to develop a facility to treat this material to produce a chip (-16 + 1 mm) product and a sands (-1 mm + 45 micron) product was taken when the price increased to above US$140/t. A simple add-on plant containing a heavy media cyclone circuit for the chips and a spiral circuit for the sands was designed and developed. During construction of the fines plant the price of chromite reached a level where the payback for the entire project was less than eight weeks. Soon afterwards the price and the demand for chromite plummeted and the site was put on care and maintenance, except for the commissioning of the fines plant. This put considerable pressure on whether to continue to operate the plant or to place it in care and maintenance. Times of boom and bust provide management with almost totally opposite views. By not taking a conservative view on prices and costs, the effect of extremely low prices and minimal demand can be devastating to a good project. Designing and building plants with conservative costings in boom times gives a greater chance of keeping projects alive during the bust periods that tend to follow.

This article presents an overview of the experimental phase equilibria studies of S-containing systems (Ni-Sn-S, Cu-Sb-S, and Cu-Sn-S) and As-containing systems (Fe-Sb-As and Fe-Sn-As). These systems improve the prediction capabilities of FactSage in a 20-component ‘Cu2O’-PbO-ZnOFeO- Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2-S-(Al2O3-MgO-CrO-Cr2O3-Na2O)-(As, Sn, Sb, Bi, Ag, Au, Ni, Co) system for complex pyrometallurgical operations during both refining and recycling. Experiments involved equilibration at predetermined temperatures (300–1200°C) with or without preheating, followed by rapid quenching in a brine. Quenched samples were then directly measured using an electron probe microanalyser. For the Ni-Sn-S system, liquid phases (NiS- and SnS-rich mattes and liquid metal) and solid phases (Ni1+xSn, SnS, Ni3Sn, FCC-Ni, Ni1-xS, NiS2, Ni3Sn4, SnS2, Sn2S3 and β-Ni3S2) were observed. A new Ni3Sn2S2 phase was found to melt incongruently. For the Cu-Sb-S system, liquid metal, matte, FCC-Cu, digenite, Sb, CuSbS2, Cu3SbS3 and Cu3SbS4 phases were observed. For the Cu-Sn-S system, liquid metal, matte, digenite, SnS and Cu3Sn phases were found at liquidus.

The Beruang Copper-Gold Deposit is located very near the centre of Kalimantan in Indonesia. It is a dacitic tuff hosted deposit currently being explored by Kalimantan Gold Inc of Canada. Exploration activity to date at Beruang has been focused on the Main Zone, which is defined by a north-south elongate, 1 + 1.5 km zone of anomalous copper and gold, and intense phyllic alteration. The disseminated sulfides responsible for the anomalous copper values produce a moderate to high chargeability signature. Phyllic alteration is overlain at high levels, and on the western edge of the Main Zone, by advanced argillic alteration. The dacite tuffs hosting the mineralisation are cut by post-mineralisation dacite dykes that are delineated by ground magnetics and geological mapping. Base metals, principally zinc and lead, form broad halos around the Main Zone. These metals are incorporated in massive NE-trending, polymetallic mineralisation that outcrops to the north and south of the Main Zone. IP survey results highlight the highly pyritic NNE-trending shear zone, which hosts most of the copper mineralisation in the Main Zone. A high chargeability anomaly at depth in the central-east part of the Main Zone is interpreted to be the source for mineralising hydrothermal fluids. This is suggested by zonations in alteration and mineralisation. A deep chargeability anomaly can be correlated with the downward plunge of a pyritic breccia, encountered at shallow levels in drillholes, and is a potential breccia pipe target. Compilation and inversion modelling of the IP results has yielded some interesting drill targets.

A new rapid spectroscopic core and chip logging and imaging system developed by CSIRO was evaluated by PIRSA and GA on a wide variety of mineralised properties in South Australia, including the Emmie Bluff, iron oxide copper-gold-style prospect on the Stuart Shelf. During a three-month campaign in South Australia in 2003 the system logged over 50 000 metres of core from the State Core Library, company prospects and mines. The new system uses automated core tray handling, continuous visible and infrared spectroscopy, and digital imaging, to characterise and identify dominant mineral species on core, chips and pulps, at spatial resolutions of ~1 cm (spectral data) and ~0.1 mm (image data). The system can log up to 1000 m of core per day and several thousand metres of drill chips. Mineralogy is pre-interpreted using specialised identification software trained on a selected suite of minerals showing characteristic absorption features within the measured spectral range. On core from the Emmie Bluff iron oxide copper-gold prospect, 470 km NW of Adelaide and 80 km SSE of the Olympic Dam Cu-U-Au deposit, the spectral mapping system was able to characterise a number of alteration zones enveloping the sub-economic Cu-Au mineralisation. These consist of distal white mica phases showing decreasing Al content towards mineralisation, a zone of increased iron oxide content in the hangingwall to mineralisation, and a zone proximal and coincident to Cu-Au mineralisation that is enriched in chlorite with variable Mg/Fe chemistry. Additionally the results show background spectral characteristics that mimic the magnetite distribution.

A short overview of the research program of SveBeFo, Swedish Rock Engineering Research, which was founded in 1993 is first given. Then four recent and ongoing projects in rock blasting and explosives engineering are presented in greater detail: 1. Burn Equations for Commercial Explosives. 2. Blast Damage in Contour Blasting. 3. The Role of Gas Pressure in Pit Wall Damage. 4. Fragmentation of Aggregate Rock. The goal of the bum equation project is to be able to control the energy release from explosive charges to the desired part of the expansion curve of the reaction products under various rock conditions. SveBeFo's work has reached the stage where a burn equation for a lab emulsion has been established which can model the influence of charge diameter on the VOD and detonation front curvature in a cylindrical charge quite well. This work now continues with other emulsion recipes. In the blast damage project the goal is to develop techniques and recommendations on how to minimise the blast damage in construction blasting. The project has gained extensive practical knowledge from the blasting of more than 200 holes in a granite quarry under controlled conditions. The cracks in the rock surrounding the contour holes have been cut open and measured. The influence of factors like charge concentration, decoupling ratio, hole and charge size, VOD and time delay in initiation have been investigated. A simultaneous initiation of a group of contour holes with EDD detonators is quite superior to single hole blasts, even when they are timed as closely as 1 ms.

The Banda arc, a U-shaped orogenic belt which separates oceanic crust of the Banda Sea from continental crust underlying the Australian- New Guinea shelf, has been interpreted to mark the convergent boundary between the northward-moving Indian Ocean- Australian plate and the Southeast Asian plate (Hamilton, 1979; von der Borch, 1979; Bowin et al., 1980). East of the island of Sumba (Fig. 1), the oceanic crust of the Indian Ocean has been completely subducted and Australian crust is now thrust under the Banda arc. Controversy has centered over the interpretation of the Timor trough as the surface location of subduction and the significance of the Savu Sea between Timor and Flores as either a forearc basin or the continuation of the Java trench (Karig et al., 1987). Two concentric island ridges, called the inner and outer Banda arcs (Hamilton, 1979), separate Australian continental crust from the oceanic crust of the Banda Sea (von der Borch, 1979) (Fig. 1). The inner arc is a typical volcanic island arc composed of calc-alkalic volcanic rocks of Neogene age, while older (Permian and younger) complexly deformed sedimentary and metamorphic rocks make up the outer arc. Timor is the largest and most extensively studied island of the outer arc and is separated from the inner arc by the Savu Sea. The triangular-shaped Savu Sea appears to be a complex forearc basin divided by a series of buried basement ridges (Karig et al., 1987). The Bogong Hydropower Development is a 140 MW high head power project currently under construction in Northern Victoria. The project is the final link in the Kiewa hydroelectricity scheme, which was originally constructed in the 1950s. Due to its location in the Alpine National Park, the waterway for the Bogong project must be located entirely underground. A series of shafts and tunnels is being constructed to transfer the water from the headworks at McKay Creek to the new power station located on the shores of Lake Guy in Bogong village. The difference in elevation between the headworks and the power station is greater than 420 m, which poses particular issues for the design and construction of the waterway. The purpose of this paper is to describe the design and construction planning aspects of the tunnelling and shaft excavation and lining works for the waterway. The tunnelling works includes 5.7 km of hard rock tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven tunnel, 1.1 km of drill and blast tunnel and two deep shafts. The tunnels and shafts are lined with a mixture of permanent rock bolts and shotcrete, concrete lining and steel lining. The viability of the Bogong Hydropower Development relies heavily on the ability of the TBM to excavate at high speed through the East Kiewa Grandiorites. Particular attention was given during the construction planning stage to understanding the excavation characteristics of this material, and designing a suitable hard rock TBM that would be capable of meeting the program requirements of the project.

With the post-war expansion of mmmg activities on its Western group of mines, the management of Lake View and Star Limited has commenced a project for the improvement of underground ventilation.The major part of this project is to provide adequate return airways for the ventilation of the deep levels. To this end, the Ivanhoe South Extended shaft is being enlarged, and ultimately an exhaust fan with a capacity of 180,000 cu. ft. of air per minute will be installed at the shaft collar.Prior to 1932, the shaft was used exclusively for baling water from the 800 and 2,000 ft. levels. These two levels are the only ones connected to workings from the Horseshoe lease. After the installation of pumping plant at the Horseshoe Main Shaft, baling was discontinued, and the water was graVitated from dams to the pumps on the 1,000 and 2,000 ft. levels.Water makes into the shaft, through a series of fault planes, between the 600 and 1,500 ft. horizons. The total flow is 16 gal. per minute, of which approximately 7 gal. per minute graVitates to the 800 ft. level. As a big proportion of the water dropped uncontrolled through the shaft, a downcast current of air approximating 20,000 c.f.m. was induced. This air ventilated a limited area of workings in the Horseshoe lease, between the 2,000 and 2,360 ft. levels.In 1938, it was decided to reverse the direction of the airflow in the shaft. In a previous paper in these Proceedings(l) it was shown from a study of the bore'logs and analyses then available, that the brown coal seams of the Latrobe Valley areas show progressive changes in composition with increase of stratigraphic depth, equivalent to a rise in rank: These changes appear as:(i) An increase in ultimate carbon and hydrogen, calculated on a dry, ash-free basis, and(ii) An increase in calorific value, calculated on the, same basis, each of the order of 1% per 100 ft. of depth, and(iii) A decrease in moisture content of the order of 0.5% to 1.0% per 100 ft. of depth. The decrease in moisture content was found to be less regular than the other changes. In some bores the moisture content remained more or less constant throughout a single seam, or fluctuated slightly, decreasing stepwise on passage to the seam below.It was noted that individual analyses within a bore showed irregular fluctuations, tending to mask the general trend in composition change. This was particularly so for the moisture content, which had been determined for 10 ft. lengths of core, whereas the other components were determined for 50 ft. lengths of core. Averaging of the moisture contents over 50 ft. lengths reduced the masking effects of these irregularities. The suggestion was made that these irregularities arose from variations in the relative proportions of pollen, resin, wood (lignite) and woody attritus composing the core.
