A unique concept for a self-cleaning filter system has been designed and constructed which utilizes acoustic energy, coupled hydraulically with a subject liquid media, and a fine mesh screen to perform the following: 1. separation of solid suspended particles from a host liquid through the breakdown of surface tension; 2. enhanced filtration of liquid fraction from the solids fraction to specified limits, retaining a specified size range of solids, and; 3. continuous cleaning of screen, preventing screen blinding and promoting a continuous filtration process. The concept is the product of a cooperative program between the Marine Minerals Technology Center, Continental Shelf Division, and the Moscow State Mining University. The physical principals involved in the separation, filtration, and screen cleaning processes primarily relate to the characteristics and properties of the applied acoustic energy and the influence of this energy on the solids/liquid mixture. The acoustic energy introduced to, and acting on and throughout, the whole volume of the solids/liquid mixture, within the vessel body at any given time induces hydraulic pressure waves, which may be further described in simplest form as positive and negative semiperiods (which may or may not be equal in amplitude or period) of the basic wave forms. The processes involved may be considered in two phases. The first phase relates to the process of separation in which the acoustically induced force of acceleration manifests as vibro-agitation (thresh- old of cavitation) and possibly cavitation is the primary factor in the breakdown of surface tension between the solid particles and suspending liquid; i.e. water. In the case of compressible organic solids, the separation of liquid by squeezing may also be a factor.

Data and information for this study were collected in June-July 2009 onboard the RV Yuzhmorgeologiya in the area covers about 7000 km2 in the eastern part of the CCFZ between 10º05? - 10º55?N and 119º25? ? 121º08?W. In accordance with the IOM research program the cruise was intend to acquire both geological and environmental data and information necessary for delineation of nodule deposits and also data for identification of the baseline of benthic ecosystem. Having implementation of its 15-year plan of work for exploration under the contract with ISA, current activities of IOM were focused on nodule fields within prime areas that could be mined in the future. Bottom photographs obtained by towed deep-sea vehicle NEPTUN along 6 profiles with common length about 300 km (Fig. 1). In total, about 11,500 digital photographs (what cover approximately 40,000 m2 of the ocean floor) were analyzed for assessment of nodule coverage and investigation of megafauna (animals, visible in photographs, the dimension more than 2 cm). The giant single-cell organisms Xenophyophorida were the most multiple animals in seabed photographs. Their number on the site area averaged 1187 ind/ha. However, the vertical camera position does not allow counting all xenophyophorids, therefore their valid number is represented 10 times more. According to all available information these protozoans play the relevant role in assemblage of deep-water environment, giving for other animal groups an [ ] additional source of nutrition and a substratum for settlement and attachment. The ophiuroids are found in assemblage with xenophyophorids in many cases, standing on a sediment at their base.

Both ferromanganese crusts and nodules present potential processors with enormous volumes of tailings of dubious environmental character: most processing scenarios fail to utilize the uneconomic manganese itself, leaving a total waste volume on the order of 96% of the incoming ore. Each current disposal proposal seems flawed: (1) backhauling to the initial mine site is costly and might run afoul of EPA or UN marine dumping*regulations, (2) subsea disposal near a coastal processing site means almost inevitable community opposition, (3) agricultural soil amendment for improving barren lava or coral rubble appears to require prohibitive amounts of supplementary phosphate, and (4) the slag resulting from an energy intensive pyrometallurgical processing may have potential as road ballast, but few processors will opt for smelting in all but those locales where energy is very cheap. This unfortunately rules out a smelting operation in almost any Pacific Island environment. We envision at least one other scenario which could result in both the removal of tailings from a processing plant and an increase in the supply of useful building materials at little or no cost to either the processing or construction industries--transforming a tenacious waste into a novel resource. Ongoing experiments have demonstrated considerable potential for turning acid leach tailings into dark composite facing stone, fancy black tile, novelty ceramics or concrete aggregate. The tailings are commonly very fine grained and may also serve as an additive in drilling mud. Applications as an additive to asphalt also need to be explored. The metal scavenging nature of ferromanganese minerals should be considered as a radioactive waste disposal matrix. There is no doubt that the greatest challenge will be

An unusual combination of ten new, deep (-100 m) coreholes and an extensive high-resolution seismic reflection network enables us to produce a detailed study of the phosphorite resources in the Tertiary strata of the Georgia continental shelf. These strata are mixtures of a terrigenous facies, notably quartz and clay along with minor amounts of other aluminosilicate minerals, and of a marine facies, notably phosphorite and carbonate. Phosphatic sediments occur throughout the cores, however the richest phosphorite beds are in the middle Miocene (Serravallian) sediment, where they constitute up to 70 percent of the sediment mass. Major zones of phosphate enrichment occur chiefly at major unconformity boundaries (tops of Oligocene, lower and middle Miocene, upper Miocene, and lower and upper Pliocene) and at prominent intrastratal reflectors representing minor unconformities within units. Phosphorite co-occurs with the clay minerals, especially palygorskite, but correlates inversely with carbonate and detrital quartz, indicating a low-energy depositional environment. The clay minerals present in these strata, which have an environmental consequence on recovery of the phosphorite, are varying concentrations of smectite, kaolinite, mica, palygorskite, and sepiolite. Phosphatic resources have been determined within only the Miocene strata. Sediment volume for this unit to the 100 m isobath on the continental shelf has been established using the high-resolution seismic reflection network that has been calibrated using the deep coreholes. Phosphorite grains larger than 0.1 mm average about 40% of the sediment. In turn, most of the remainder of the sediment in this size range is quartz, which is separable from phosphate grains using conventional flotation techniques. Our estimate is that 300 Gt of phosphorite lie within the Miocene strata of the Georgia continental shelf.

The marine diamond industry off south-western Africa is maturing rapidly. Some of the larger explorers have reached an advanced stage in their resource development and new mining operations have been started in the last year. Most of the major exploration, mining and marine engineering companies have offices in Cape Town. As a result of the increased activity and experiences to date, new approaches to marine diamond exploration and mining are now evolving. Primary factors contributing the new approaches are namely 1) the concentration of expertise in a localised area 2) the significant increase in the base of available exploration and production results and 3) parallel advances in the marine engineering design and geophysical survey equipment. The sea floor geology and setting of the marine diamond exploration areas is now better understood. Consequently the strategy for exploration and the selection of appropriate survey equipment is improved. Due to new equipment developments, different exploration alternatives now exist, depending on the programme objectives. Significant advances have also been made in the data processing and modelling undertaken to assist in the identification and targeting of potentially diamondiferous prospecting features. Similarly, the design of appropriate prospecting tools and programmes has also been improved. Following exposure to the requirements of the marine diamond industry, the design engineering and operating companies have responded with innovative designs for new prospecting tools. In recent years the availability of relevant information on marine diamond prospecting and production has increased. As a result, there is now sufficient basis for the construction of meaningful financial valuation models that can be effectively used to control and guide the exploration projects, to the benefit of both the explorer and the investor.

"Ferromanganese nodules are again of interest because of their high concentrations of Ni, Co, Cu as well as REE. With regards to an operational underwater mining industry, one of the main questions and important requests is to finding a method that can predict the abundance of nodules with high accuracy within reasonable time spans, without many requirements for ground truth data; and all these on an operational scale and ideally automated. In this regard, we present results of a study based on the combination of highresolution multibeam and optical data acquired by an AUV using specific machine learning techniques to reveal a detailed distribution of the Mn-nodules in correlation to the seafloor terrain. The accuracy of the method employed and results gained were validated and approved through comprehensive statistical analysis and by comparison to box-core data.Study AreaOur study area (AUV survey block G77) is located in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) (Eastern Central Pacific Ocean), an area that has been receiving international research and industrial attention for many years already (e.g. McKelvey et al., 1979; Bernhard and Blissenbach, 1988, von Stackelberg and Beiersdorf, 1991, Jeong et al. 1996). Block G77 covers an area of 9.5km2 in a depth between -4478m and -4536m. The area is characterised by gentle slopes 0-5° (0-3° in most of the area and only in the outer parts of the Block slopes can exceed 5°). The seafloor is characterised by moderate to low rugosity, the only exception being a small area in the eastern part, where sub-recent smallscale volcanic activity created 15 cone-shaped morphological features of up to 55m height and 150m width that are clustered in an area of 700 x 380m (Figure 1)."

Up to now, much data on marine minerals, as well as on marine geochemistry, have been accumulated. Modem computer databases provide optimum flexibility and power for manipulating these data. The best worldwide marine mineral database is currently the Marine Minerals Bibliography and Geochemical Data Base created by Carla Moore et al. at the National Geophysical Data Center in the United States. In fact, in the course of studying marine minerals and geochemistry we may collect not only digital-character type data but also graph and image (black-white, grey and color image) data types. For instance, correlation diagram between chemical compositions of minerals, spectroscopic graphs, (e.g. infrared spectra, Mossbauer spectra, etc.), grey or color images from both optical and electron micro- scopes (scanning or transmission electron microscopes) as well as seabed photographs. Charles L. Morgan et al. (1993) reported that 10,000 photographs and some video images of the seabed in the Clarion-Clipperton region of the northeastern tropical Pacific have been collected by the Ocean Minerals Company. If both graphic and analytical information were stored in a database, it would be very useful and convenient to marine geologists. This system would not only be able to search for all the data based on one parameter, but also for both size and composition distributions. If possible, geostatistical methods could be combined with fractal dimensional methods. Of course, this would require enormous efforts. Before multimedia technology emerged, it was very difficult to create image databases. The emergence of large-capacity compact discs, high-speed central processing units, and high-speed digital signal processing techniques makes it possible to establish multimedia database management systems (DBMS), image-text DBMS, that involves graphs, text, images, and sound. In order to store image fields in a DBMS, we have to take into account two problems: (1) image access format and (2) image compression code standard.

Ancient volcanogenic Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag-Au massive sulfide ores commonly have associated with them along strike and in the immediate hanging wall a distinctive sediment that is thin, usually cherty and metal enriched, and generally referred to as an "exhalite horizon" or "tuffaceous exhalite". Typical examplks include the 13 Ma tetsusekiei of the Kuroko deposits of Japan (Kalogeropoulos and Scott, 1983, Econ. Geol.) and the 2700 Ma contact tuffs of Noranda, Canada (Kalogeropoulos and Scott, 1989, Can. J. Earth Sci.) and Key Tuffite of Mattagami, Canada (Liaghat and McLean, 1992, Explor. Min. Geol.). Attempts to use trace element distributions as lithogeochemical guides to ore have been largely unsuccessful. Exhalites have been considered to be the products of seafloor hydrothermal activity that is peripheral to the main ore-producing vents. However, large actively-forming polyrnetallic sulfide deposits at the Explorer mid-ocean basalt spreading ridge (1 850 m depth) in the NE Pacific and the eastern Manus back-arc dacitic spreading center (1650 m depth) in the western Pacific have demonstrated that the exhalite horizons are more likely produced by fallout of particulates from the main hydrothermal plume. In a typical hydrothermal plume, grains of >27 µm represent up to 97% of the mass (although only 2% of the population) of the particulates and are calculated by Stokes equations to fall from the plume to the seafloor within a few krn of their source. The particles are primarily composed of anhydrite, barite, amorphous silica, iron oxyhydroxides and metal sulfides and oxides. Plumes are subject to bottom currents which push them in preferred directions, just like smoke plumes in the atmosphere are subject to the vagaries of wind direction. INTRODUCTION Germany has a long history in marine research in the Indian Ocean. The first German scientific cruise started in 1964, followed by a series of state-sponsored research cruises between 1983 and 1995 leading to the first finding of polymetallic sulfides in the Indian Ocean. The research included regional bathymetric, geological, structural, volcanological, petrological and hydrothermal investigations along the Carlsberg Ridge and the Central Indian Ridge (CIR). Early environmental base line studies covered oceanographic and sedimentology aspects. In 2010, BGR took the initiative for the preparation of a license application for the exploration of polymetallic sulfides with the International Seabed Authority (ISA), and prospecting started in 2011 along the southern Central (CIR) and the northern Southeast Indian Ridge (SEIR) in the southwestern Indian Ocean (cruises INDEX 2011 on board R/V Sonne), INDEX 2012 (R/V Fugro Gauss), INDEX 2013/1-2 (R/V Sonne) and INDEX 2014 (R/V Pelagia). After three years of resource-oriented and environmental base line studies, BGR, in order for the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), applied for an exploration license which was approved by and subsequently signed with the ISA in 2015. The license gave permission to start a detailed exclusive resource-oriented exploration program in the license area. The program includes the outline of potential ore deposits and a resource assessment but also extensive and detailed base line studies for the sustainable protection of the marine environment in the license area. The license contract has a fifteen years lifetime and may allow the application for a subsequent mining license. The exploration aims at the identification of inactive polymetallic sulfide deposits, formed below former discharge zones of hot hydrothermal fluids on the ocean floor (“black smoker” systems), by advanced and modern exploration techniques.

The rare earth elements (REE1s; atomic number 57 -71) exhibit a coherent chemistry, are widespread in nature, and tend to occur in characteristic concentrations in different geochemical phases. Because of their predictable chemistry, the REE's-are highly useful as indicators or tracers of geochemical processes, and are often used as such in investigations of the genesis of terrestrial ore deposits. However, analogous applications of the REE's to the study of marine mineral deposits have been constrained by our limited understanding of the marine geochemical cycle of these elements. For example, a continuing area of uncertainty in this regard involves the so-called "REE Mass Balance Problem." This problem refers to the fact that detailed geochemical mass balance calculations typically predict a significant imbalance for the REE's; i.e., the calculations predict that REE removal rates from seawater are 11-18 times greater than their input rates. Yet all other chemical considerations indicate that the REE budget should be roughly in balance. Recent studies at The University of Michigan suggest the solution to this problem lies in understanding the the role of seafloor hydrothermal activity in the marine budget of the REE's. Geochemical analyses of hydrothermal sediments from two Pacific sites (East pacific Rise at 19°s and the Southern Juan de Fuca Ridge at 45°N) clearly show that the REE component of hydrothermal sediments is primarily acquired via scavenging from seawater. Iron oxyhydroxides, which form as precipitates when hydrothermal solutions are debouched onto the seafloor, are the active scavenging agent. Although the REE content of hydrothermal sediments generally increases with increasing distance from the rise crest, this increase is especially pronounced for sediments deposited below the lysocline,

INTRODUCTION The UN-General Assembly adopted an Agreement on 28 July 1994 entitled ‘Agreement relating to the implementation of Part XI of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea ((UNCLOS) of 10 December 1982’. The Agreement came into force on 16 November 1994, and consequently, the inauguration of the International Seabed Authority (ISA, or the Authority), located in Kingston, Jamaica. The Authority is the organization through which States Parties to the Convention (168, as of 25 July 2017) shall, in accordance with the regime for the seabed and ocean floor and subsoil thereof beyond the limits of national jurisdiction (the Area) established in Part XI and the Agreement, organize and control activities in the Area, particularly with a view to administering the mineral resources of the Area. The legal regime for the administration and development of the mineral resources of the Area as it now exists are available in Part XI of the Convention1 which contains the legal framework governing “activities in the Area” and in Annex III to the Convention which contains the “Basic Conditions of Prospecting, Exploration and Exploitation” with respect to the resources of the Area2. The 1994 Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the UNCLOS is the so- called ‘parallel system’; as elaborated in article 153 of the Convention. The essential elements of the ‘parallel system’ include assured access for States parties and their nationals to seabed mineral resources along with a system of site-banking, whereby ‘reserved areas’ are set aside for the conduct of activities by the Authority through the ‘Enterprise’ itself or in association with developing States or in joint venture with the contractor who provided the particular reserved site2.

Platinum is one of the most rare elements in the earth?s crust, but it is significantly enriched in some hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts in the ocean. The element is essential to the electric industry and is believed to be of importance as a raw material a future fuel-cell industry. The earlier reliable chemical analysis of platinum-group elements (PGE) of ferromanganese crusts have indicated a variety of concentrations of Pt in the range of 100 ppb to a maximum of about 1 ppm, but little is known about the elemental abundance in ferromanganese crusts on fine-scale, or the geochemical behavior and form of the element. The chemical and mineralogical forms of platinum and its group are important in planning the methods of mineral exploration and extraction of the elements from of ferromanganese crusts. We attempted to characterize the distribution pattern within a cobalt-rich crust on the fine to microscopic scales by using reflecting microscope, scanning electron microscope/energy-dispersive spectroscopy, electron microprobe X-ray analysis (EPMA), ICP-mass spectroscopy, X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), small-focus XRF, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). These data indicated a wide range of Pt concentration from 150 to 700 ppb within a crust, though we found no distinct inter-element correlation or mineralogical control. Under the reflecting and electron microscope, no distinct Pt-bearing minerals or particles were identified. Small-focus XRF indicated no uneven distribution in any particulate matter, but all areas are less in abundance than the detection limit of about 10 ppm. Our tentative conclusion is that zero valence Pt0 (as suggested by XANES) is dispersed in the form of submicroscopic material most probably within ferromanganese minerals, and therefore, Pt-rich mineral particles may not be a major carrying phase.

Two major Kuroko-type deposits and minor sulfide deposits have been found in the middle Izu-Ogasawara (Bonin) Arc, Japan (Fig. 1). The Hakurei deposit, one of the major Kuroko-type deposits, was recently found in Bayonnaise knoll caldera in the nascent rift zone, which lies 20 km westward of the Sunrise deposit in Myojin knoll caldera on the Izu-Ogasawara volcanic front. The Hakurei deposit is a huge hydrothermal field measuring 500 m by 700 m in plan view. The Bayonnaise knoll caldera is mainly composed of dacite lavas and fragmental material on the caldera wall and rim, and its floor contains sediment composed of pumice, volcanic fragments, and hydrothermal clay. It is associated with a post-caldera dome and has a slightly ellipsoidal caldera rim that measures 3 km by 2.5 km, with about 200 m relief. The water depths of the caldera floor range from about 840 m to 920 m. The Kuroko-type deposit in the Bayonnaise knoll caldera occurs on the southeastern caldera floor where the caldera boundary faults intersect with a N-S-trending normal fault of the rift zone. In the deposit, many sulfide chimneys are generally less than 10 m high, and sulfide mounds are distributed around the caldera floor and on the sloping talus at the foot of the caldera wall. The deposit is buried in part by talus composed of pumice and volcanic fragments. Sulfide chimneys are still active, and inactive ones and their fragments are partly oxidized to reddish material. Chimney sulfides are mainly composed of sphalerite associated with chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, and barite, and chemically enriched in Au up to 14 ppm and Ag up to 1400 ppm with major Zn, moderate Ba, and minor Pb, Hg, Cu, and Fe.

Ferromanganese (FeMn) crusts form by precipitation of iron and manganese oxides from seawater onto a rock substrate and are therefore considered hydrogenetic in origin. Diagenesis does occur however, through the process of phosphatization. During phosphatization, abundant dissolved phosphate in seawater replaces carbonate in the detrital fraction as well as directly precipitates within the FeMn matrix as carbonate fluorapatite (CFA). This process is likely accompanied by the partial dissolution or replacement of the oxide phases [1]. As a result of these diagenetic processes, trace elements adsorbed on the oxides are released and can either be depleted or enriched in the phosphatized FeMn crust layers. Pb, for example, has been shown in sequential leaching experiments to associate with the iron oxyhydroxide (FeOOH) phase in purely hydrogenetic layers, while >95% of Pb in phosphatized crust layers is found in the CFA fraction [2, 3]. However, previous sequential leaching studies analyzed bulk layers of phosphatized crusts and only a few crusts, from the Pacific Ocean. Here we present concentration data for Pb and other trace elements in the CFA fraction leached from thin stratigraphic intervals of the phosphatized portion of FeMn crusts from the Pacific and Atlantic oceans to confirm consistency of trace metal association with CFA both throughout the phosphatized section and in two ocean basins. The Pb and trace element concentration data from this study will also be compared with data from non-phosphatized crusts from the global ocean. We can then determine the effect of phosphatization on the concentration of Pb and other elements of greater economic interest in FeMn crusts, specifically whether there is overall enrichment, depletion, or possibly even phase transfer of each metal in the phosphatized layers.

Occurrence of hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts has been well documented over inactive seamounts in the central and southern Pacific Ocean. It has been thus believed that the hydrogenetic crusts develop preferentially at water depths between about 800 to 2500 meters. In fact, according to the Manganese Crust Database (F. Manheim, 1988), only two occurrences are known at water depths below 5000 m out of 819 occurrences cited in the database. Unexpectedly, we found typical hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts from deep-sea floors; 1) outcropping old volcanic basement over the Philippine Sea Plate (abandoned spreading centers and subducting old oceanic crusts) and 2) one from the slope of an abyssal hill in the Central Pacific Basin (Cretaceous deep-sea basin) at water depths ranging between 5200 to 6100 meters. We report their occurrences with submersible observations from Shinkai 6K, physical parameters (such as thickness of crusts about 2-4 cm in maximum), chemical composition, petrology of substrate, and results of Be-10 dating for some samples in comparison with typical Co-rich manganese crusts from the Central Pacific seamounts. The preliminary chemical and mineralogical analyses reveal that they are of typical hydrogenetic origin, and typical of iron-manganese oxide mineral, vernadite, slow and probably continuous growth, and lower content of Co than the Central Pacific seamount crusts. The occurrences and nature of the crusts indicate that deep-sea floors are also optimal for the growth of hydrogenetic crust even at 5000 m water depth or deeper, only if oxygenated deep waters are supplied and the sea-floor morphology keeps stable enough for significant geological time period. Additional details of chemical analyses will be prepared by November and to be shown in the conference.

Radiometric surveys of the beach and nearshore zone of the Dutch Frisian Islands have identified sands enriched in heavy minerals. The areas of heavy mineral concentration have been mapped in detail using a state of the art towed gamma-ray detector, which gives improved sensitivity through the use of new detector materials and improved data processing techniques. The detector provides continuous measurement of sea floor radioactivity (and of a number of other parameters) and can be used simultaneously with other survey techniques, such as echo sounding, sidescan sonar and shallow seismic profiling. It enables a rapid, and cost effective, assessment of the surface distribution of heavy minerals to be made. The heavy mineral suite includes magnetite, ilmenite, garnet, rutile and zircon. These minerals contain 1-3 orders of magnitude more U and Th, in terms of their activity concentrations, than the accompanying light minerals (mainly quartz). Since the heavy mineral composition of the sands appears to be relatively constant along the Dutch Frisian Island chain, the U and Th concentrations can be used to provide a quick estimate of the heavy mineral content. The sea floor radiometric measurements allow sediment sampling for more detailed analysis to be highly targetted. The zones of heavy mineral enrichment are generally sub-parallel to the coast and are usually confined to water depths of 5-10 m. There is a close correlation with sand bars on the shoreface, the highest radioactivity typically occurring just seaward of the crest of these features. As well as being used for heavy mineral exploration, similar radiometric methods can be applied to mineral processing. Gamma-ray detection systems can be used to provide rapid analysis in the process stream enabling on-line grade control and optimisation of processing, from excavation of mineral sands to the final products.

On the western continental shelf of southern Africa diamonds derived from onshore sources are concentrated in gravels within drowned terrestrial and marine geomorphological features. First discovered offshore in the late 1950's, they are known to exist for about 1400 km along the Namibian and South African coast in water depths of up to 200 m. Shallow water operations yielded 1.5 Mct during the decade ending 1970 when De Beers acquired a majority of the offshore leases and commenced a 15 year exploration program. Deeper water and the prevailing sea conditions required the development of new, unique, marine mining equipment. The first large scale mining production of 22 kct was achieved by De Beers in 1989 with an output of 22 kct. Annual marine output from all sources now exceeds 0.6 Mct worth some US.$ 170 M, and rising to 0.7-0.8 Mct for 1998. Exploration has also been taking place in the waters of West Africa, Australia, and Indonesia. Exploration is by means of high resolution geophysics followed by sampling using a variety of drills, airlifts and seabed-mounted machines which imitate the eventual mining process. Surveying is now probing depths of 500 m. Smaller scale mining by several junior companies has traditionally involved diving and airlift systems. Increasingly, however, they are adopting different and improved techniques which to date have been employed only by De Beers Marine as contractor to Namdeb. Marine exploration and unit mining costs are high compared to those applicable to alluvial deposits onshore. By 1996 the total development costs incurred by De Beers alone reportedly had exceeded US.$ 500 M. However, the financial rewards are commen-surate because of the higher recovered grades. The operations are not without risk for the total of nearly 10 large and medium scale production vessels deployed by various organisations. The greatest shortfalls are experienced in the estimated throughput, not the grade.

Typical coastal placers leave no doubt that placer accumulation can result in significant concentration of heavy minerals in marine shallow water environment. However, the same situation is quite predictable for guyot?s slopes at stages of submarine volcano formation and later submersion of guyots to a depth of up to 3-4 km. Where these placers could be found is also clear ? in coastal facies (as typical coastal placers), and in morphological traps down guyot slopes in zones of active submarine currents. The latter could be cracks in rocks, shallow depressions, spurs, and structures, such as coral reefs, stromatholiths, and even ferromanganese crusts. The last of these have been studied carefully by the author in the Magellan Seamounts and on the Mid-Pacific Rise: tens of minerals, including mineral forms of PGE, REE, Mo, W, Te, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, &Zn were identified as a xenogenic (trash) minerals. The detailed study of polished epoxydized sections, showed that interstitial spaces of Fe-Mn botryoids are enriched in heavy minerals (predominantly titanomagnetite). Taking into account the irregular character of crust surfaces and their position in active water environment, we can definitely state that they are the ideal traps for placer minerals. Study of guyot basaltic matter showed the presence of similar REE, PGE minerals that are in the crusts, and the same (mostly) micron sizes of minerals. High content of PGE in some basaltic varieties (up to 1 ppm) suggests that this is a reasonable source of these elements in the crusts, rather than the water column (which is normally considered to be the case by most marine scientists). Predominance of Pt in hydrogenous (?) crusts is interpreted as due to the better stability of Pt mineral forms during weathering and transportation (these are isoferroplatinum, and silicides). Comparison of 143Nd/144Nd values in bulk crusts, heavy fraction of crusts, basalts, and water column supports the author?s idea, that a significant part of REE also comes from basaltic matter (in form of monazite, CeO2 etc.).

Although Mn, Fe, Cu, Ni, and Co have been the main interests since the ferromanganese nodules had been found, the other major components such as Si and Ca might be very important controlling factors in the processing due to the locally variable content. It is because of the fact that SiO2 and CaO are added to decrease the smelting temperature in the reduction-smelting method for manganese nodule processing. We have compiled the 707 chemical data for KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Survey) ferromanganese nodules, which have been acquired from 1994 to 2001 and have been also standardized from 2001 to 2003 to avoid the discrepancy between the data sets. All 707 chemical data were used for the hierarchical cluster analysis to get the elemental correlations and also classified by the morphological types. The averages from each station were classified by the facies groups (Fig. 1) and the localities. Then all data are plotted on the SiO2-CaO-MnO phase diagram at 1773°K to compare with the best compositional area in the nodule smelting. Variations and distributions of SiO2 and CaO as well as those of Mn, Fe, Cu, Ni and Co in KODOS ferromanganese nodules were also reviewed. The mineral phases assigned by the cluster analysis are CFA (Carbonate Fluorapatite), Fe-oxide, Al-silicate, and Mn-oxide. MnO contents are generally higher than SiO2 contents in most of the morphological types except for the Is- and It-type. The Dt- and Tt-type show wider range and the E-types show high anomaly in their CaO contents. The stations which belong to facies group A and B show generally higher MnO contents than SiO2 contents, however, the stations of facies group C and D show wide range in their MnO and SiO2 contents.

"This study presents the first catalogue of marine mineral deposits and energy resources along the continental margin of Spain. Aggregates, oil and gas and metalliferous mineral areas have been defined and mapped. The catalogue, implemented in a geographic information system (GIS), is conceived as a first national database within the European network, which is being built as part of the EMODnet-Geology project. It comprises 8 types of mineral and energy resources for the Spanish margins: aggregates, hydrocarbons, evaporites, placer deposits, phosphorites, polymetallic sulfides, polymetallic nodules and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (Figures 1 and 2). The catalogue stores a total of 409 marine mineral deposits and compiles information such as name, deposit type, main morphology, main minerals, setting or area extent for each mineral deposit. By number of deposits compiled, the aggregates are the most abundant (286) followed by hydrocarbons (62), cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (32), evaporites (9), placer deposits (8), phosphorites (5), polymetallic nodules (4) and polymetallic sulphide deposits (3). Considering the total extension, hydrocarbons (32,386 km2) and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (24,951 km2) represent the biggest areas.The Geological Survey of Spain (IGME) is developing a new tool in the catalogue, according the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Database parameters, for individual samples on each ferromanganese deposit. The database includes an extensive collection of records that comprise five information groups: general cruise and sample data, physical properties, mineralogy, geochemistry and acronyms used. New attributes have been incorporated, in example: geophysical, sedimentological and petrological data in the deposit area, sample weight, porosity, morphology, textural and structural features, geochemistry of major, minor and trace elements (included REEs and PGEs) and supplementary cruise and laboratory reports. This new database complements the EMODnet-Geology project minerals catalogue, offering a deeper level of information for the areas with major potential for mineral or energy resources as they are the Canary Island Seamount Province, the West Margin of Galicia and the Gulf of Cadiz."
