Construction of the $200 million Riverchase Galleria Mall in Hoover, Alabama was started in early 1984. The construction area consists of about 70 acres. The extensive building complex requires heavy concrete foundations which have to be poured during the early stages of construction and on a nearly daily situation so that contractual agreements can be met on a timely basis.

The safety record for explosives in U. S. mining is excellent considering that over 4 billion pounds of explosives are now being used each year. However, blasting accidents remain one of the most serious concerns based on the number of injuries, the injury severity rate and the disaster potential. The Bureau of Mines has been analyzing blasting accident data obtained from the Mine Health and Safety Administration (MSHA) to determine the most frequent causes of mine blasting accidents and to examine trends in blasting accidents. This accident analysis is an update of two previous blasting accident studies conducted by the Bureau and published in 1983 and 1987.

This paper describes the procedure for analysis of toxic fumes from the detonation of high explosives using the Large Chamber at the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC). This test is specified in 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 15.20 (g) as a requirement for the Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA) approval of an explosive as permissible for use in underground coal mines. The Large Chamber replaced the Bichel gauge and CrawshawJones (C-J) apparatus in the 1989 revision of these regulations. To determine the safety of an explosive in terms of toxic gas production, the Large Chamber Test attempts to simulate mine conditions and miners' exposure to toxic gases from explosives.

Blast casting or trajectory blasting, as it is sometimes called, is an innovative mining technique that has been receiving increasing acceptance among operations of surface coal mines and quarries as a means of offsetting the rising cost of mechanical excavation of overburden with a high overburden-to-ore ratio. Many similarities exist between geological characteristics of overburden formations of phosphate beds and the formations that conceal coal seams. Both are sedimentary origin and are removed for mining in an identical manner (i.e. use of a dragline or shovel to strip or cast the overburden aside).

Fragmentation size assessment faces difficult problems, traditionally involving tedious and time consuming procedures. Early work had been directed towards developing empirical methods of predicting rather than measuring fragmentation. More recent development of computer-based image processing techniques which derive size distributions by analysis of photographic or video images are reviewed. These are now being adapted by various workers to fragmentation analysis in mines. Results are presented from experimental work aimed to establish the accuracy and precision of photographic techniques for muckpile assessment. Reference is made to McGill fragmentation studies at surface and underground mines in Canada, relating to experience gained in photographic and image processing techniques. The various factors that affect such techniques as well as their limitations and strengths are discussed.

This contribution of the concept of mass blasting both closing and production allows breaking paradigms, to limit the number of tons to thunder. The areas of geotechnical different mining large mining companies worldwide and especially from the National Copper Corporation (CODELCO, Chile) has been declining volumes closing blasting and production, with the misconception to protect the end walls of the pit, before any geotechnical risks caused by various types of faults; especially the circular faults. A blasting of small tonnage can do more damage to a wall when it is not properly sequenced, leading to the coupling of the wave train and therefore the exponential damage in/s (peak particle velocity, PPV) on the wall of the Tagus. Blasting closing mass production and contribute technically and operationally in the dynamics of the following operations: loading, hauling, crushing, processing and preparation of the final product; eliminating delays to return to thunder small volumes where one must stop all mine equipment, incurring high costs and especially losing valuable time in the continuity of the following unit activities.

This study examines the effects of small scale airblast experiments on cohesive soils and the resulting ground vibrations and crater geometries. Relationships for ground vibration attenuation with soil depth and distance from the blast source were developed. The study is part of a broader research topic of understanding the vulnerability of earthen embankment dams to blast loading. Many earthen embankment dams in the United States were constructed more than fifty years ago and were not designed to withstand high-stress loading such as blast loading. These structures may be susceptible to failure and it is important to describe the response of the earthen dam during a blast event.

Railroad and blast induced vibrations were measured in the vicinity of the proposed Big Bend Cutoff. Peak horizontal and vertical particle velocity relations were developed using least squares regression analysis. The dominant frequencies of these data are in the range of 30 to 50 hz. Therefore, allowable charge weight per 30 msec delay curves were generated for buildings (2 in./sec) and unlined tunnels (8 in./sec). A blasting contour map is presented for this site.

The City of Fort Myers needed to replace a 40-year old 42-inch storm sewer line in downtown Fort Myers with a new 54-inch line to accommodate population growth. The old line had to be kept operational while a new line was installed. The contractor spent two months using a drop ball, a hoe ram, and large rippers trying to break the three to four feet of rock that needed to be removed to accmmodate the new pipe. Mechanical trenching was considered but was proven to be overly expensive. On very short notice, Ireco of Florida was asked to design and execute a blasting procedure that would allow this project to proceed. Nearby buildings were over 80 years old, three of them containing antique shops specializing in glass antiquities with attorney offices above them. High water table compounded problem with a 20-year old steel water main and clay drainage pipe 15 feet frcan the new sewer line. Holes had to be drilled within six inches of the edge of the existing pipe to four feet below the pipe on either side of the pipe and blasted. No interruption in the sewer line flow was to be tolerated.

Blast fragmentation is one of the main parameters for optimizing mineral processing, but reliable data is difficult to acquire, resulting in unpredictable performance and efficiency. Crusher and grinder circuits are designed to process specific rock size ranges. Oversized rocks require extra energy to reduce before feeding into the process, and undersized rocks indicate that the process is not used to its full extent. Blast design is the key to controlling the blast fragmentation, so the ability to accurately monitor the particle sizes is imperative.

Public perception is a significant challenge facing the explosives industry. The public often perceives that its needs and interests are in direct competition with those of blasting companies’, leading to conflict between corporations and the community. This misunderstanding lends to unnecessary political and regulatory hardship, and ultimately, social discontent. Although individual corporations implement strategies to address conflict, many of these techniques are insufficient. Consequently, stakeholders resort to expensive litigation. If blasting companies could reduce or eliminate the volume of judicial disputes, valuable resources could be re-directed to more productive activities.

Aside from the mechanical properties and process of actual rock breakage, rotary drill bit performance is affected by several “post breakage” items: cuttings size, flushing air pressure, flushing air volume, cuttings load, drill hole geometry, etc. We all recognize that more efficient drilling creates bigger cuttings, more air pressure cleans the hole bottom better, more air clears the cuttings from the hole, and a better hole geometry allows cuttings to escape with a minimum of “regrind”.

The camps, which include substantial industry participation, have been an outstanding success with both the students and their parents. In many areas of the eastern United States, especially in the Midwest, past mining activities have left large and extensive underground openings. Now, renewed mining is occurring in such areas in surface pits. Also, construction blasting often occurs in rock over such old openings. Within the last fifteen years, some attention has been given to the interaction between surface blasting and underground cavities; concern has been expressed about the possible changes in vibrations transmitted through areas underlain by old mine workings (Siskind, Stachura and Nutting 1987). Previous studies also had indicated that underground openings could influence transmission of surface mine blast vibrations (see, for example, Woodward-Clyde Consultants 1977). The principal concern is that underground openings under surface blasting may intensify low-frequency vibrations. If such intensification occurs, use of available equations to predict peak particle velocities and to design blasting patterns and select blasting parameters could lead to possibly damaging ground shaking.
