It is a case study of huge rock-mass, loosened out from the parent rock-body, & posing a potential danger to structures down below the slope on which this rock mass was standing. Case was dealt in two phases, by tying/stitching the rock mass to the parent rockbody and breaking it using controlled blasting technique.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines investigated flyrock and burden movement from blasting at several limestone and basalt quarries in the upper midwest. Blasts have been studied at 14 different sites using high-speed cinematography. Blasting was accomplished in 75- and 150-mmdiameter holes using a variety of explosives. Films from each blast were analyzed to show burden velocities, observed flyrock distance, and direction of throw in relation to the shot layout. This technique, in some cases, allowed determining point of origin and cause of the flyrock as well as the flyrock range.

Sands Hill Coal, located in Wellston, Ohio produces coal for steam generation and crushed limestone for the aggregate market in southeastern Ohio. This paper concerns the blasting and production of the limestone which lies between the #5 and #4 coal seams. The limestone bed averages 8 to 10 feet in thickness and is overlain with 17 to 20 feet of shale from the floor of the #5 seam.

The methods used to confine the gases within a borehole can influence the amount of useful energy obtained from the explosive charge. Improper confinement not only wastes energy and raises cost but also can result in airblast, excessive ground vibration, flyrock and boulders. The type of stemming material and amount of stemming used will definitely influence the degree of confinement and the efficiency of the blast. In order to extract the maximum energy from the expanding gases, the stemming plug should never blow out and allow the gases to escape prematurely.

Several derivatives of soybean oil are currently manufactured and sold on the open market. Of these, the use of methylsoyate as a direct fuel substitute in diesel engines has been thoroughly researched and practically applied. The use of this product as a fuel gave rise to the idea of using a similar substitution in ANFO blasting agent. The first year of a three-year research program has been sponsored by the Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council. The project is funded for the purpose of opening up of new markets for Missouri soybean products.

The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company operates three open pit iron mines on the Marquette Iron Range of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Open pit iron ore mining began in the area in the 1840's. Underground mining was predominant from 1860 through 1960. Large scale low grade-open pit iron ore mining began in the early 1950's with the establishment of the Humboldt Mine, concentrator and pelletizing plant. This pit operated until 1970, when the reserves were exhausted.

Progressive cavity type pumps are widely used by commercial explosive manufacturers for pumping water gel, emulsion and emulsion / ANFO blend explosives. Tests by explosives companies and investigations into incidents have shown that this type of pump can develop dangerously high temperatures when operated deadheaded or dry. [i.e. with no flow of product through the pump.] In some tests and incidents, explosion or detonation of the explosive (or residual explosive) in the pump has resulted.

Upon being introduced to the MAGNETIC COUPLING concept,Balsinger,Inc. wanted to conduct field trials to explore the potential of Magnetic Coupling in the U.S.. Although the Magnetic Coupling Concept has been widely used, the U.S. proposed blasting criterion not previously addressed by the system. Modification to the system assembly and blasting accessories had to be made to make the system adaptable to our specific requirements. The field trials and system modifications are the basis of this paper.
