As part of its goal to minimize the requirements for critical and strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research to foster the use of domestically abundant materials such as molybdenum. This report describes the development of an investment shell molding technique that can be used to make castings of molybdenum and its alloys. The mold material is cubic Zr02 with a monoclinic Zr02 binder. The shell, formed by standard investment molding techniques described in the text, is prepared for molybdenum casting by firing for 6 hours at 1,550° C (2,822° F) or for 4 hours at 1,650° C (3,002° F). The resulting castings have predictable and reproducible dimensions with good detail. As-cast strength is poorer than the strength of wrought materials below 1,600° F. At and above this temperature, tensile strengths of cast and wrought materials are nearly equal. Aqueous corrosion of the castings in most media is insignificant.

Mining did not contribute significantly to the economy of Benin, a small country on the coast of West Africa, during 1978-79. During these years, Benin continued to be rated by the United Nations as one of the 25 least developed countries in the world; its gross domestic product was under $200 3 per person per year. Salt from seawater, sand and gravel, bricks, and imported clinker for cement were the only minerals which contributed to the economy. Minerals were not expected to play an important role in the commercial sector of Benin's economy during the next decade. Joint projects included infrastructure development to create a coordinated road and rail system between Niger and Benin that was begun in 1960 as ?Operation Hirondelle." In 1976, an agreement for the construction of a rail link from Niamey, Niger, to Parakou was signed. At Parakou, the rail line would join the existing line to the port at Cotonou. Construction of the rail line was expected to take 6 years, and the cost was estimated at $287 million in 1979. During late 1979, the Federal Republic of Germany granted Benin a loan of $12 million for reconstruction of the port at Porto Novo. Benin and Nigeria were discussing a joint adventure in crude salt exploitation.

Prompted by forecasts of a sulfur oversupply, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is conducting research on potentially large-scale uses of this commodity to extend or replace such construction materials as asphalt, cement, and mineral aggregates. Through these efforts, paving materials have been developed in which sulfur replaces up to 50 pct of the asphalt normally present and which can be prepared and placed with existing mixing and paving equipment. Laboratory properties and design methods for this direct mixing process are described along with properties obtained on small-and large-scale field demonstration projects. These properties are compared with those obtained from control materials prepared without sulfur additions. Monitoring for toxic gases during laboratory and commercial mixing and paving operations is discussed also.

THE BITUMINOUS coal and lignite industry increased substantially in 1962, compared with the 1961 figures. The major items of production, consumption, exports, and productivity increased. However, certain key items declined. The steady upward trend in mechanization failed to materialize for the third year; the percentage of total tonnage mechanically loaded remained the same as in the 2 previous years; and the tonnage mechanically cleaned was smaller than in the previous year. The percentage of total production mined by stripping and by augers increased slightly. Most significant was the continued decline in average value and employment. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States in 1962-422 million tons-was 5 percent greater than the 403 million tons produced in 1961. Production was greater in 1962, owing largely to expanded consumption by the electric utilities and to more exports.

The petroleum sector continued to dominate Ecuador's economic activity in 1978, accounting for nearly 10% of the gross domestic product (GDP) and 42% of total export earnings. In 1978, a more flexible petroleum export price was adopted which permitted an expansion of foreign market opportunities. During 1979, Ecuador took advantage of disruptions in the world petroleum supply and renegotiated existing export contracts to accomodate the rapidly escalating world market price. Petroleum sales on the spot market were maximized, and prices reached unprecedented levels. By taking royalty payments in-kind, Ecuador increased its volume of petroleum available for term and spot sales. Although the volume remained about the same as in 1978, the total value of 1979 petroleum exports increased to about $920 million, reflecting a 76% increase over the $523 million received for 1978 crude oil exports. Concerned about its steadily decreasing petroleum reserves (recently estimated at about 1.1 billion barrels), rapidly increasing and heavily subsidized domestic consumption, and the prospect of having to import substantial amounts of petroleum by 1983, Ecuador announced plane which it anticipates will double reserves within the next 5 years. The Government plans to spend $1 billion over the 5-year period. Plans include drilling 325 exploration and development wells and establishment of a secondary recovery program for the Sachs and shushufindi fields. Some exploration wells are expected to reach a depth of 17,000 feet. It is thought that substantial reserves exist in the southeast Amazon region. Late in 1979, it was announced that some 10 million hectares will be available for exploration tenders-probably in blocks of about 200,000 hectares each-in the Amazon jungle of the Orients and in the coastal and offshore regions. The Government planned to commission a private, independent analysis of Ecuador's petroleum reserves that would also include recommendations on efficient production levels.

However, tonnage per man per day increased from 12.83 tons in 1960 to 13.87 tons in 1961, owing partly to the increased tonnage produced by continuous mining machines. Also, the percentage of total production mined by stripping and by augers increased slightly. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States in 1961-403 million tons-was 3 percent less than the 416 million tons produced in 1960. Production was retarded in 1961, owing largely to the business recession and reduced exports.

The Bureau of Mines performed a pilot study examining the effects of posture on back strength and Maximum Acceptable Weight of Lift (MAWL) on six healthy male subjects (M = 32 years + 4 SD). Six hack strength measurements (3 static and 3 dynamic) were made while the subjects were kneeling and standing. In addition, these subjects (who were unaccustomed to lifting in these postures) volunteered to participate in a study of psychophysically determined NAWL in both postures. Results of the back strength tests showed a significantly lower peak torque per body weight output in kneeling versus standing hack strength measurements for five out of six test comparisons (p < .05). Subjective estimates of lifting capacity in the kneeling posture were significantly lower than those for the stooped posture (p < .05). The results of tests of hack strength and lifting capacity in these two postures provide useful information to consider in determining the physiological and psychophysical stresses imposed by these

Some of the geochemical relationships that exist between subsurface fluids and the associated geologic strata in petroleum producing areas of Louisiana have been determined. Samples of petroleum-associated water were obtained from 126 wells in Louisiana that produced from sediments of three geologic ages: Tertiary, Cretaceous, and Jurassic. The samples were trans-ported to a central laboratory for analysis of chemical composition, using standard methods, to determine if the compositions varied with the geologic strata of their source and, if so, why. The dissolved constituents were com-pared with those of a brine that was concentrated by evaporation. The concentrations of bromide, calcium, and strontium were useful in distinguishing the brines produced from sediments of a late age from those of an earlier age. The concentration ratios of Mg&apos; (total equivalent magnesium) and bromide indicated that dolomitization probably had occurred and altered the composition of the brines. A principal-components analysis of the data indicated an inverse relationship between depth and concentrations of bromide, strontium, calcium, and lithium.

As part of its investigation of methods of increasing the efficiency of fuel resources, the Bureau of Mines is continuing the study of the general problems involved in the economic use of fuels in gas pro- ducers that were carried on by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey. In the course of this study many inci- dental problems of prime importance have demanded consideration. Among them is the determination, under practically constant con- ditions, of the duration of gas-producer tests necessary to reduce the possible error to a minimum. A discussion of this proper length of test period forms the first part of this bulletin. An attempt to dispel some of the uncertainties that arise in an investigation or to account for some of the minor phenomena often necessitates a systematic and careful study of certain chemical, ther- modynamic, or physical laws, or a combination of these, which in turn may result in information or conclusions of great value. Fur- thermore, seemingly unimportant observations often prove to bear directly upon the design, construction, or manipulation of the machine under test. In attempts to improve the gas producer considerable attention has been given by manufacturers to such questions as fixing or isolating the combustible components of the tar, utilizing the waste heat of the producer for the generation of the steam required by the plant, apply- ing the suction principle to bituminous coal and other tarry fuels, and many allied subjects. Little study, apparently, has been given to the physical-chemical conditions most suitable to the formation of hydro- gen and of carbon monoxide, with a view to regulating the percentages of these gases in generators using fuels other than anthracite coal or charcoal. An attempt was made to introduce such investigations when the operations of the government coal-testing plant began at the Louisi- ana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis in 1904, but owing to adverse conditions these problems were abandoned until the plant was trans- ferred to Norfolk in 1907. The delay in beginning this line of inves- tigations, together with the short testing season at Norfolk, limit the second part of this report to preliminary physical-chemical studies, which, however, were sufficiently significant to warrant careful ex- amination pending more complete researches, which are being carried on at the station located in Pittsburg.

Data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) indicate that a total of 241,502 employees worked in surface mining locations in 2003, corresponding to 212,113 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers. • Surface employees accounted for 84.6% of all mining employees. • The majority of surface employees (73.7%; n = 177,927) were mine operator employees as opposed to contractor employees. • Stone operator employees comprised the greatest percentage (27.2%; n = 65,743) of surface employees.

In 2004, 14,478 mining operations reported employment statistics to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Almost half (48.9%) were sand and gravel mines, followed by stone mines (30.4%), coal mines (13.9%), nonmetal mines (5.1%), and metal mines (1.7%).

The value of nonfuel mineral raw materials produced in the United States in 1978 was $20 billion. In 1979, total value increased to an estimated $24 billion, up 20% from 1978. Of the principal metallic ores produced in 1979, about half showed increased quantitative output and all showed increased value per ton compared with that of 1978. Most nonmetallic commodities showed increases in quantitative output and in average value per ton. Because of its decreasing share of the world market, the domestic mineral industry&apos;s concerns were the increasing costs of capital, labor, and energy; withdrawals of public lands from mining; and the increasing cost of environmental regulations that tended to deter or delay investment in the Nation&apos;s capacity for producing essential minerals.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report conveys the results of an economic analysis of minerals in the West Mojave Management Area (WMMA), including the Desert Tortoise Priority Habitat (DTPH), a proposed special land management area. Undiscovered mineral resources were estimated for the entire WMMA, which totals 8.7 million acres. Known mineral resources were studied for the DTPH, which is an area of 1.2 million acres contained within the WMMA. Federal lands within the WMMA are managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The WMMA includes Federal, State, and private lands in the western portion of San Bernardino County and the eastern portion of Kern County. The center of the study area is 20 miles northwest of Barstow, California (Figures 1 and 2).

"A set of fracture profile photomicrographs is presented for fractures generated under mixed mode loading of the Pittsburgh coal. The fractal dimension is used· to characterize the irregularity of these profiles and a tentative relationship is presented between the fractal dimension and the fracture toughness. Surface roughness appears to depend solely on the stress intensity and no other dependence was observed with fracture loading mode, loading rate· or specimen orientation. Observations of crack bifurcations.in fracture profiles can indicate crack growth direction whereas direct surface observations generally cannot in materials such as rock and coal.1 INTRODUCTIONThe production of fine fragments of material as a result of some loading event occurs in many industrial processes. In crushing and grinding, the efficient production of fine fragments is the desired end result; .however, in coal cutting, the production of fine fragments may lead to high levels of respirable dust in the immediate atmosphere with the danger of human lung diseases. Two of the most important sources of fragments in the 1 to 10 micron size range during a cutting process are 1) severe crushing in a zone near the loading tool and 2) subsequent shearing along major crack surfaces that form the larger fragments during material reduction. These and other sources of fine fragments generation are discussed by Roepke (1984) and Zipf and Bieniawski (1986). The physical character of the nearly created major crack surfaces is believed to have a strong influence on the amount of fine fragment generation that occurs during subsequent shearing movement. When the major large fragments initially form, they are ""locked"" in place by the irregular character of the new fracture surface. Only after some relative motion has occurred between fragments are they actually liberated, and the net result is the formation of additional fine fragments. The fine fragmentation is not necessarily limited to the shearing of high points from the macrocrack surf ace since material remaining in the wake of the crack tip is damaged to a substantial depth below the actual crack surface."

Native asphalt was produced in 1978-79 by six companies in four States. Leading States were Texas and Utah. Output in-creased 37% in 1978 to 1.7 million tons and decreased 5% in 1979 to 1.6 million tons while value increased 39% in 1978 to $19.3 million and 33% in 1979 to $25.6 million. Bituminous limestone was produced by Whites Uvalde Mines and by Uvalde Rock Asphalt Co. in Uvalde County, Tex.; by Southern Stone Co. in Colbert. Ala.; and by Barton County Rock Asphalt Co. in Barton County, Mo. The product was used mainly in street and road repair. Gilsonite was produced by American Gilsonite Co. in Uinta County, Utah, and by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. in Weber County, Utah. This material was used for purposes other than road repair.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Spokane Research Laboratory, are investigating technology and methods to monitor the blind areas around large haulage equipment used in surface mines. On average, six fatalities a year can be attributed to equipment colliding with other vehicles or pedestrian workers, or backing over the edge of a dump point. Several off-the-shelf technologies exist for monitoring areas that an equipment operator cannot see from the cab, including radar, video cameras, and radio signal detection systems. NIOSH researchers have tested many of these systems on large dump trucks both at their test facility and at surface mines. This article discusses the technologies available for this application and their effectiveness in detecting objects near an off-highway dump truck. Also, guidance is presented for mine safety personnel who are planning to evaluate collision warning systems or cameras on their haulage equipment. Available Technology Over the past few years, the number and types of systems available for monitoring the blind areas around heavy equipment have increased. Systems marketed for the automotive and recreational vehicle industries have been around for a while. Small video cameras can be found
