Professor R.P. King holds a Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering, which he obtained at the University of Manchester in 1963. After that he lectured in the Departments of Chemical Engineering at the Universities of the Witwatersrand and Natal. From 1968 to 1973, he was Leader of the Chemical Engineering Research Group of the National Institute for Metallurgy at the latter University. Mr C.E. Fivaz, Pr. Eng., is Chief Consulting Metallurgist of Rand Mines (Mining & Services) Limited, and is responsible for the metallurgical activities of the Gold and Uranium Division and the Coal and Base Minerals Division of the Group.

CONTRIBUTION BYH. WAGNER AND T.T. OZAN The paper by Dr J.N. van der Merwe makes an important contribution to the design of bord-and-pillar workings in the Vaal basin. It has been recognised for some time that the strength of coal seams in the Vaal basin is markedly lower than that of coal seams in other coal-mining districts in South Africa. However, there was insufficient data to quantify how much weaker the extensively jointed coal the Vaal basin is. A number of recent pillar collapses that occurred at Sigma colliery, the only remaining underground colliery in the Vaal basin, provided Dr Van der Merwe with an opportunity to make this assessment.

Abstract: Triaxial tests were conducted on the schist specimens with various anisotropic angles under confining pressures of 0, 7 and 15 MPa, and axial stress-axial strains, were measured and plotted for various conditions. The results obtained reveal the effects of schistose on the strength and deformability of the rock very clearly. Peak strength of the specimens for 00 and 900 schistose orientations are nearly the same. Modulus of elasticity of this rock varies with anisotropic angle. For 0 orientation modulus of elasticity increases to a maximum. Confining pressure increases the peak strength and improves the rock deformability. However, this effect is not the same for various orientations, and there are no similar trends for each anisotropy direction. Analysis of the results shows that consideration of a linear failure criterion such as Mohr-Coulomb is appropriate for the prediction of rock behaviour up to 10 MPa, rather than a non-linear one. The analysis also reveals that the friction angle and cohesion are affected by the anisotropy orientation, and this effect is more important for the cohesion than the friction angles. Le resistance final sur les echantilions pour les angles o degre et 90 degree est equivalent. Le modoule d elasticite de ce roch sera difere par a port de l angle de stratification. Mais cette effet bn est pas unigue pour les different stratification, et pour les diferents directions no– isotrop it n y a pas le meme solution. L analyse des resulitats montre que le criterre de ruin comme mohr–colomb est moderate pour le pousse lateral jusq av lo mega pascal , et ce n est pas neccesaire d utiliser de criterre no–linear . Cette analyse aussi montre que l angle de frottement et cohsion est en relation de la direction no–isotrop, et cette effet est olus important pour le cohsion par a port de l angle de frottement . Aber ist diese Wirkung nicht das gleiche für verschiedene Orientierungen, und es gibt keine ähnlichen Tendenzen für jede anisotropic Richtung. Analyse der Ergebnisse zeigt jener Überlegung Kriterium eines linearen Ausfalls wie zum Beispiel Mohr Coulomb passend für die Voraussage von Felsen Verhalten bis zu 10 MPa, anstatt eines nicht linear ist. Die Analyse offenbart auch, daß der Reibung Winkel und Bindekraft werden beeinflußt von der anisotropic Orientierung, und diese Wirkung wichtiger für die Bindekraft ist, als der Reibung Winkel

After graduating with a B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Bristol, he joined the National Coal Board's management training programme. Mr B. Moore was born in Coventry, England. He matriculated at Bablake School and then atended Birmingham University, obtaining a B.Sc. Mining Engineering degree in 1953. Professor J .S.J. (J annie) van Deventer matriculated at Swelendam High School. He studied chemical engineering at the University of Stelenbosch, and obtained the degrees of Hons. B. Ing. in 1978 and Ph.D. (Ing.) in 1985. Professor M.D. Brayshaw received most of his education in England but obtained his Ph.D. (Eng.) at the University of Natal. Researchers at Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) CANMET Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories (CANMET-MMSL) and Mining Technologies International (MTI) have designed and built a hybrid diesel-electric mining loader that is the first of its kind to be developed for underground mines. Diesel equipment is popular because of its mobility and most mining operations are reluctant to replace it with tethered electrical equipment despite the obvious elimination of diesel contaminants and significantly lower heat generation (? 35% of an equivalent diesel). However, a diesel-electric vehicle, being currently evaluated by CANMET-MMSL, could be beneficial. In this unit, a constant load diesel generator feeds batteries which, in turn, powers electrical motors that drive the equipment. In a hybrid diesel-electric unit, the constant load diesel generator can be optimized for minimal emissions and hence lower dilution air requirements. This paper will present the project status and the anticipated benefits for mining operations through the application of this technology.

The stability of rock slopes is significantly influenced by their curvature in plan view. The importance of this in open pit mining is indicated by the fact that, in a deep pit, steepening of the slopes by 1° may save as much as $100 million. It is considered that there are two significant factors that play a part in the influence of plan curvature. These two factors are the effect of stress, and the effect of geological structure. The scant literature that pertains to this aspect of rock slope design was reviewed. The geometrical influence of the plan curvature was then investigated. It was seen that it has a parabolic effect on the maximum possible wedge that can fail into a circular pit, where the tighter the concave curvature the smaller the wedge. The plan curvature also affects the volume of a particular wedge, where concave slopes result in an exponential decrease in the volumes and convex slopes have exponentially increased wedge volumes. A change in the strike of the wedge did not affect the curvature’s influence on the volume, but the volumes of shallower dipping wedges were affected more by the influence of the plan curvature. La stabilité des talus des roches est très influence par la courbure de celles ci dans la vue en plan.Son importance de l peut arriver à sauver même $100 millions. Il est considère qu il y a deux facteurs importants qui jouent une influence sur cette courbure. Il s’agit de l’effet des contraintes et l’effet de la structure géologique. La brève littérature qui se réfère à cet aspect du conception sur le talus des roches a été revue. L’influence géométrique de la courbure des plans a été investiguée. Il a été vu que cela un effet parabolique sur la bosse ou le su relèvement maximum possible qui peut faillir dans un puits circulaire, ou le plus resserre est la courbure concave, le plus petit est su relèvement (bosse). La courbure plane aussi affecte le volume d’un particulier su relèvement ou les talus concaves résultent dans une décroissance exponentielle en volume alors que les talus convexes accroissent la volume de ces su relèvements (bosse). Le changement de l’orientation de la bosse (su relèvement) perpendiculairement ou obliquement n’ a par affecte l’influence de al courbure sur le volume mais les volumes des bosse (su relèvement) peu profonds étaient affectes par la courbure des plans. Die Stabilität der Felsensteigungen wird erheblich durch ihre Biegung im Plan beeinflußt. Der Wert von diesem in der Tagebaugrube wird durch die diese Tatsache, in einer tiefen Grube, steepening der Steigungen durch 1° angezeigt; kann soviel wie $100 Million speichern. Es wird betrachtet, daß es zwei bedeutende Faktoren gibt, die eine Rolle im Einfluß der Planbiegung spielen. Diese zwei Faktoren sind der Effekt des Druckes und der Effekt der geologischen Struktur. Die dürftige Literatur, die diesen Aspekt des Felsensteigungdesigns betrifft, wurde wiederholt. Der geometrische Einfluß der Planbiegung wurde dann nachgeforscht. Es wurde gesehen, daß es einen Parabolischen Effekt auf dem maximalen möglichen Keil hat, der in eine kreisförmige Grube ausfallen kann, wo, das fester die konkave Biegung, das kleiner der Keil. Die Planbiegung beeinflußt auch das Volumen eines bestimmten Keils, in dem konkave Steigungen eine exponentiale Abnahme an den Volumen ergeben und konvexe Steigungen exponential Keilvolumen erhöht haben. Project evaluations of mineral deposits are necessary for mineral rights, owners and investors alike. A feasibility study provides a definitive technical, environmental and commercial base and is the key element leading to a decision to invest or not to invest. For example, the study may be used to justify further exploration and development expenditure or to provide a basis for a major underwriting to raise the required capital. There are three distinct phases in the development of a project and the type of study will differ depending on the quality of information available or the level of decision to be made. This paper looks at these three phases in the development of a mineral project and the type of study required; namely, a scoping study, prefeasibility, and a full feasibility study. This paper focuses on the application of ion exchange technology for the recovery of copper from a leach solution originating from a heap bioleach in which base metals are leached from a low-grade ore that bears platinum group metals. Screening tests indicated that Dow XUS43605 has high selectivity for copper over the other metals in the solution, namely nickel, iron, cobalt, zinc, manganese, and aluminium. Batch adsorption kinetic experiments showed that copper adsorption equilibrium is attained at a fast rate. The kinetics of adsorption increased as the temperature was increased from 25°C to 60°C due to the decrease in solution viscosity and the subsequent improved intra-particle mass diffusion. Single-component Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were fitted to the batch copper adsorption equilibrium data, and a maximum copper capacity of 26 g/l was observed for Dow XUS43605. The effects of flow rate, temperature, pH, and initial metal concentration on the dynamic recovery of copper were investigated in fixed-bed columns, and it was determined that temperature and flow rate had the most significant impacts on the loading of copper on the resin at copper breakthrough. A 36% increase in copper loading at breakthrough was observed when the temperature was increased from 25°C to 60°C. Finally, it was determined that a split elution is possible by using different concentrations of H2S04 to first elute co-loaded nickel from the resin, followed by the elution of copper.

The ?Kolwezi Zinc Plant?, in French ?Usines à Zinc de Kolwezi? (UZK), has produced about 910 000 dry metric tons of residues during the hydrometallurgical treatment of calcines from sulphide zinc concentrates. The zinc hydro plant residues contain on average 19.47% Zn, 2.7% Cu, 2.1% Pb, 26.6% Fe, 0.12% Cd, 0.39% As, 157ppm Ag, 447.8 ppm Ga, 475.4 ppm Ge, etc. This material was dumped in five ponds in the vicinity of the plant. The high Fe content in the ore concentrates induced important conversion of some of zinc and copper into ferrites during the roasting process. Those ferrites are very stable compounds, which are difficult to leach with dilute sulphuric acid solution. Therefore, they mainly report to the leaching residues. Hot leaching has been successfully applied to the treatment of zinc hydro plant residues. The method, however, presents the disadvantage of simultaneously dissolving iron(Fe). It is then necessary to remove an important iron quantity from solution prior to zinc and other metals recovery.

The susceptibility of a low-alloy steel that has been hardened and tempered-826 M40 (EN26)-to embrittlement by strain aging during service was simulated by artificial aging of specimens at 100°C. It was found that the brittle transition temperature of both monotonic and cyclically strained material was increased by only about 25°C as a result of strain aging. It is concluded that the susceptibility of low-alloy steels in the hardened, tempered condition is less than that of low-carbon steel, and that such steels qualify for exemption of the periodic 'annealing' required by the Mines and Works Act.

Planning the use of South Africa's energy resources, especially coal, is of the utmost importance. The State and the mining industry require reliable official estimates of the economically mineable coal reserves for planning purposes. An overview of al the previous reserve estimates is given, with specific attention to the two most recent estimates-those of Petrick and De Jager. The differences between these two estimates are highlighted. The following important aspects are discussed: . the need to update the information regarding South Africa's mineable coal reserves, . the necessity of understanding and agreement between the coal-mining industry and the State department responsible for updating the coal-reserve data, and . the importance of the specific assumptions used in the updating of the data. A downward adjustment of mineable reserve figures is proposed, and the factors that influence the meaningful exploitation of the coal reserves are discussed. A recommendation is made as to how the Waterberg coal reserve should be exploited, and it is concluded that the Soutpansberg Coalfield cannot be exploited economically in the foreseeable future. An evaluation of the status of the coal-export trade is made and compared with the assumptions and targets set at the start of the coal-exportation scheme. The comparison shows the extent to which the exploitation of the coal reserves is being negatively influenced by the current market situation. Recommendations are made regarding planning for the coal-export market, and the aspects that have to be taken into account to keep South Africa in the export market are identified. Reference is made to the fact that the present unrestrained wage and salary adjustments, which show a total disregard of South Africa's poor productivity record, require serious thought and speedy rectification if the country is to survive in the export market. A salary and wage strategy must be developed to suit the specific needs of the Republic of South Africa.

Balkema Publishers, Rotterdam, Netherlands. This paper is a study of the ventilation, cooling and refrigeration system design of the Mindola copper mine in Zambia. The challenges that were addressed varied from the restrictions imposed by an ageing infrastructure to the requirement for increasing the annual production rate, coupled to the introduction of a higher level of mechanization while maintaining acceptable conditions and limiting total ownership costs. A description of how the ventilation, refrigeration and cooling systems were modelled in order to obtain the projected heat loads associated with two different mining methods over the life of the project. The methodology included a number of iterations to optimise the design and include aspects such as the expected inrush of hot fissure water, the operation of diesel machinery at depths in excess of 1500m below surface, developing a cost-efficient cooling strategy and selection of the refrigeration machinery to meet the requirements imposed by the cooling strategy. This paper demonstrates the successful implementation of an integrated design approach.

Mr Janisch' s comment' in the August issue on Dick Stacey's remarks about safety factors indeed requires wider debate. The example he quoted to illustrate the successful application of the safety factor concept in coal mining, namely the Salamon formula, is to my knowledge the only recognized application of that concept. Not only that, but that particular formula should be used only for what it was intended, namely to prevent major disasters. It was never intended to indicate long-term pillar stability, and it should not be used for that.

INFACON 7, the seventh International Ferro Alloys Congress, took place in Trondheim, Norway, in June 1995. The main aim of the Congress, which was held under the auspices of Euroalliages and the Norwegian Ferroalloy Research Organization, was to present the challenges facing the ferro-alloys industry on the road to the 21st century. Halyard Tveit, Chairman of the Technical Committee, summarized these as: ? the transition to a single global market economy ? new demands with regards to quality arising from customer needs, and ? increased awareness of the global environment. In the Plenary Sessions Kouichi Nakamura (Nippon Steel) outlined, from the steel industry's point of view, the relationship between technical advances in the products and more demanding ferro-alloy specifications. Advances in steel manufacturing technology and higher product quality have been supported in the past by raising the quality standards of ferro-alloys. Future requirements are bound to bring about more severe standards, and these need to be established by common agreement between both industries.

Our mineral heritage - PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS given by P. W. J. van Rensburg, Pr. Eng.. B.Sc. (Eng.)(Rand) INTRODUCTION Stone Age people were living in various parts of South Africa as recent,ly as a thousand years ago, when they were displaced by Iron Age people with a culture developed in the far north. These invaders brought farming, building, and the earliest mining developments to the Transvaal, thus ushering in the beginning of our great mineral heritage. It is of particular interest to record that, up to comparatively recent times, some of these people were excavating iron-bearing shale rocks for their smelting furnaces on the Melville Koppies in J ohannesburg. Although the most recent the iron-smelting furnaces discovered on these koppies is estimated to be some five-hundred years old, it believed that these Iron Age people were driven out, and their settlements destroyed, by Zulu impis only one-hundred-and-fifty years ago.
