The support of stopes and tunnels in South African gold mines subject to rockburst damage requires special attention. The interaction of a seismic wave with either a stope or a tunnel is subject to a number of variables, namely the distance from the source of the event, the ground velocity, the orientation of the excavation with respect to the direction of the seismic wave, and the geology and fracturing around the excavation. This paper discusses these factors in relation to the support requirements in stopes and tunnels. The need for the integration of hydraulic props with stope support and the use of yielding anchors for tunnel support are emphasized.

In the first section, a brief background to the practical and theoretical aspects of bacterial leaching is presented. Descriptions are given of present and potential methods for exploiting bacterial leaching in metal-winning. In the second section, the results of recent research are presented. The aim of this work was to obtain a greater understanding of the mechanism of bacterial leaching of sulphide minerals. Bacteria were observed to catalyse leaching reactions by oxidising ferrous ions to ferric ions, by removing protective films at the mineral surface and by depolarising cathodic areas.

This paper reviews the current mining taxes in South Africa, discussing the recommendations of the Mantis Technical Committee, the measures already implemented, and the future outlook. It is concluded that the tax burden imposed on individuals and on the corporate sector should be reduced, and that the taxation of al economic sectors should be neutral. The reforms implemented in 1989 and 1990 are expected to continue, and it is thought that, if the State commits itself to tax neutrality and reduces the ordinary rate of company tax to 40 per cent, the rate of mining taxes will also be lower. Ring-fencing is expected to be reduced further and the rules for capital safe-havens to be refined.

The application of excess shear stress as an aid to the design of mine layout is reviewed, and the critical parameters required to describe slip on a plane of weakness are noted. A design procedure that is required to model the cyclic build-up of excess shear stress is described. A number of simple examples of mine layouts on two reef planes intersecting a fault plane are then considered to illustrate the application of the design concept and to highlight some of the pitfals that may be encountered

The role of large, ultra-high-powered arc furnaces in a fully integrated steelworks for the production of flat products is outlined, and an account is given of the technological improvements that have been implemented over the past few years to enable the arc furnace to remain competitive against the conventional route using blast furnaces and top-blown-oxygen steelmaking (LD). Modern secondary refining facilities have been installed, enabling the arc furnace to operate at high production rates in the manufacture of high-quality flat products.

The prereduction and smelting characteristics of UG-2 ore were studied and compared with those of Winterveld chromite ore. The UG-2 ore proved more reducible, and substantial prereduction (over 70 per cent reduction after 30 minutes at 1250oC) was obtained. No difficulty was experienced in the production oh high-carbon ferrochromium alloy containing 48 to 50 per cent chromium. Calculations of the energy balance show that UG-2 chromite has lower total energy requirements (both on the basis of unit of ferrochromium produced and of total chromium content). More than 50 per cent of the energy required for reduction can be supplied outside the smelting furnace.

The Third International Conference on Coal Research was held in Sydney, Australia, in October 1976. The papers and proceedings of the Conference will be published in Australia on behalf of the International Committee for Coal Research in April 1977. The papers deal with the economics and practicability of coal conversion, coal winning, resources assessment, safety and dust, and coal and power generation, together with an appreciation of coal potential by the deputy chairman of the U.K. National Coal Board. I am deeply honoured by your invitation to address your great Institute on this centenary occasion. Mining is a cyclic industry that continuously faces enormous challenges as it wrests the treasures of the earth from an often reluctant mother nature. Throughout the ages, those challenges have demanded great skill from mining men and women, who are required to blend a mixture of robust determination with art and science. Pioneer Miners and Scientists It is not surprising therefore that the first blush of euphoria surrounding the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand quickly gave way to consternation about the need to increase the metallurgical recovery of gold from the then readily identifiable conglomerate. The rugged pioneer miners had to turn to scientists for their salvation.

The status of the South African research and development programme on continuous ion exchange, which was aimed at the technical and economic assessment of that process for the recovery of uranium, is reviewed. The first phase of this programme, which has now been completed, involved development investigations on various pilot plants and culminated in the successful operation of a large-scale demonstration plant and the incorporation of the system in a number of new South African uranium plants. This account highlights the engineering aspects and the design fo the system, its adaptation to process flowsheets, and plans for future development.

The pattern of mining-induced fractures ahead of stope faces in deep-level gold mines, as revealed by petroscopic observations, is described. It is shown that there are zones of fractured and unfractured rock ahead of the face, which are about I m wide and continue as discrete entities for at least 12 m parallel to the face and at least 5 m vertically. These zones do not form continuously as mining progresses, but develop from time to time, leaving a solid zone between the fractured zones. The maximum depth of fracturing ahead of the face depends on the rate of energy release.

Gravity-fed water systems in mines by A. WHILLlER, Pr. Eng., Se. D. (M.I.T.) (Fellow) and J. VAN DER WALT, Pr. Eng., B.A. Hons. (Bus. Admin.), Ph.D. (Eng.) (Visitor) South African mines often experience significant losses in production because of recurring shortages of water at work places as the result of underground dams running dry. Similar shortages have occurred during fire-fighting operations, and now, with the use of cold service water to aid in the cooling of mines, it is even more necessary that such shortages should be prevented. This paper draws attention to the primary cause of such water shortages, and an outline is given of some of the fundamental hydraulic principles that must be followed in the design of gravity-fed water-supply systems on mines.

Column flotation has been developed over the past ten years as an alternative to conventional flotation. It has been used mainly in the cleaning applications of sulphide flotation, where its ability to wash the froth of entrained gangue and produce a higher-grade product has given it a distinct advantage over other technology. The benefits of column flotation can be summarized as follows: Improved concentrate gradeby 2 to 5 per cent . Significantly lower operating costs . Savings in capital investment . Superior control. Since the initial development of the equipment, a number of design improvements have been developed that now form the basis of the Cominco column-cell design. The purpose of this article is to discuss some of those design innovations, and present some typical industrial results.

The realization of an Integrated Technical Resource Asset Management System (ITRAMS) has so far evaded all software developers in the mining industry. The major factors that have prevented the development of such a system are limitations on software, hardware and network systems. Several factors have come together at Venetia Mine, which has made the undertaking of such a project both possible and desirable. This has led to the formation of a strategic partnership between Venetia Mine and Gemcom Software International Inc. This partnership is dedicated to develop and provide an Integrated Technical Resource Asset Management System based on Microsoft Back Office architecture, Gemcom for Windows™ and the MinRas system. This paper will elaborate on the phased approach of the integration of systems into the core repository, mechanisms of integration, the functionality of the system, final results, techno-economic benefits and general project management issues.

The transportation of men, material and rock in mechanization programmes is often neglected, or at least plays only a secondary function, as the primary focus is on proving the technology. This is despite recognition of the fact that mechanization is essential if gold mines are to remain competitive. However, the use of totally mechanized systems will require further research in the short to medium term before they become generally available. Thus, there is a real need to improve mechanized men, material and rock transportation systems as they are currently used. This applies to both reef horizons as well as to horizontal transport systems. In situ measurements and numerical modeling based on elastic theory showed that backfill stresses are considerably higher than originally thought. This has led to a change in understanding of rockmass behaviour. After describing previous work on the behaviour of the rockmass, this paper discusses possible reasons for the high stresses measured in backfil, and identifies the rockmass mechanisms possibly generating these stresses. It is concluded that the joints and the geological stratigraphy can lead to increased elastic convergence, and that the inelastic behaviour of the rockmass is also partly responsible for the increased closure measured in backfill. The use of an in situ modulus is suggested as an interim solution until a new computer model that allows for joints, different layers, and inelastic closures becomes available.

Results from a study undertaken at a Transvaal colliery on the feasibility of undermining an urban development by conventional bord-and-pillar mining operations in the No. 4 Seam of the Highveld Coalfield are discussed. Surface ground vibrations above production sections were measured, analysed, and then compared with well-accepted guidelines so that the expected effects of vibration on inhabitants and surface structures could be determined. The measurement and scaling of ground vibration from blasting are outlined, and the effects on humans and structures are discussed. It is concluded that residential areas can be safely undermined by conventional drilling and blasting techniques provided certain simple guidelines are followed.

A relatively simple rate equation for the kinetics of the absorption of gold from cyanide solutions onto activated carbon was lI5ed as the basis in the development of a model for multistage carbon-in-pulp and carbon-in-Ieach absorption circuits. The model was used in the prediction of both the steady-state and the transient behaviour of the absorption process, and the results were found to be in reasonable agreement with those observed in an extended pilot-plant campaign. A number of practical implications of the model are discussed, and an assessment is made of the economic consequences of the various process options available for the design of a carbon-in-pulp plant.

This paper sketches an expert system for use underground in pinpointing problem areas in the operation of machines. The system is typically a software 'shell' designed to accommodate a series of 'if-then' rules that are intertinked to systematically search for the cause of the problem. During the search, the system asks a series of questions that have to be answered by the operator and then, when necessary, by an artisan. The rules of the system are generated by a knowledge engineer whose function it is to gather the necessary diagnostic information and prepare it in the required format for the expert system. Much still requires to be done in the development of such systems and in the testing of hardware to withstand the mining environment.
