For more than 100 years, diamond mining has been Namibia?s most important mining sector. Today, it provides the highest foreign currency income for the country?s development. Since the late 1970s, offshore mining of diamonds has gained more importance and now more than 60 percent of Namibia?s generally high-quality stones come from those offshore deposits, with a steady increase expected for the coming years. Diamonds in Namibia The mining industry is one of the three pillars of the Namibian economic development, along with tourism and fishing. Diamond mining is one of the two main mining activities in Namibia and diamond mining operations are rapidly moving from onshore to offshore deposits. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the current and future situation of the Namibian mining industry, with a special focus on the tasks and new technical developments for the successful excavation of beach and marine diamond deposits. The different deposits and the adequate applied mining technologies and methods are shown in examples.

A coal's size distribution, clay content and moisture content can affect its handling behavior, but the combined effects of these properties and the effects of other properties are not known. Research underway at CQ Inc.' s (formerly EPRI' S) Coal Quality Development Center (CQOC) and at Iowa State University (ISU) will answer these questions as part of a four-year project to develop a coal handleability index for utilities to use when specifying coals. This paper will present preliminary data from the first year of the project, which focused on obtaining data on the chemical and physical properties of various coals and their measured handling properties. Additionally, size, ash and moisture analyses and shear test data for several coals used at one power plant will be presented along with correlations between these physical and chemical properties and the measured handling properties. These data lead to the conclusion that, while moisture content-is the most important variable, the amount of -325M (-0.044 mm) coal fines is a significant factor in determining coal handling behavior.

Sharp in ?Geologic Map of the Silver Cliff and Rosita Volcanic Centers, Custer County, Colorado?, (U. S. G. S. Map I- 1081). The discussion will relate only to the southern half of the Silver Cliff volcanic center and differences in geologic interpretation, which are largely structural, will be pointed out as they arise. Only the manganese/silver zone of the Kate Area will be discussed in detail.

"Liebherr, as most anyone involved with the global mining industry knows, is one of the world’s largest makers of mining and construction heavy equipment. The familyowned company has been around since the 1940s and, according to Stefan Heissler, by the end of next year, will employ about 44,500 people worldwide. Heissler is a member of the board of directors of Liebherr International AG.It all started for the Switzerland-based company when Hans Liebherr first recognized a need for heavy equipment in the construction industry, Heissler said. His first product, introduced in 1949, was the TK10, a mobile crane that, at the time, was a groundbreaking innovation to the heavy construction industry. From there, the company began its growth into a world-leading heavy equipment manufacturer that always relied on innovation.In October, Liebherr gathered a group of mining and construction magazine editors in Leoben, Austria to take a look at the company’s latest addition to the global mining and construction markets. On the mining side, Liebherr provided a demonstration of its T-236 100-t (110-st) haul truck and the PR- 766 50-st (55-st) crawler tractor. The one-day demonstration took place at the Erzberg iron mine near Leoben, where both machines are being proven.The Erzberg Mine, operated by VA Ersberg, has been in operation for about 1,300 years and is said to be Europe’s largest surface mine. It employs about 230 people and mines about 12 Mt/a (13,200 million stpy) of ore, producing about 3 Mt/a (3.3 million stpy) of fine-grained iron ore.T-236 rigid-frame truckThe new T-236 rigid-frame dump truck, with a diesel electric drive system, is Liebherr’s entry into the 100-t (110-st) class and is the first in this class with a four-corner, oilimmersed braking system. The haul truck was first introduced during the 2016 MinExpo in Las Vegas, NV. The unit has since successfully completed its testing phase and is currently in its first field operation trials at the Erzberg iron mine in Austria."

The value of exported nonenergy minerals from the less-developed countries has increased substantially between 1970 and 1985, but their market share relative to world exports has remained stagnant. Of the top twenty minerals exporters, only four are developing countries. Production capacity in the developing countries is shown to be less sensitive to demand downturns than capacity in the developed countries. Two approaches to the management of cyclical minerals demand are given using examples from India and Papua New Guinea. The authors conclude that pro¬tective policies implemented by developing nations have, barring a few exceptions, relatively little impact on the chronic nonfuel minerals oversupply problem.

Each year more than 400 coal miners are injured (fatal and non-fatal) by rock falling from between or around roof supports. Many of these injuries could be prevented by the installation of roof screen (wire mesh). However, many coal mines may be reluctant to use roof screen because of the added cost. The goal of this study was to determine the potential saving in workers? compensation (WC) premiums that could be achieved due to a reduction in rock fall injuries after roof screening. The WC rate-setting methods utilized by IL and KY were investigated in this study. Using actual data obtained from MSHA, national and state WC bodies and individual insurance companies (e.g. average cost per injury, loss cost rate, number of injuries per year, number of injuries preventable each year with roof screening), hypothetical mines (representing two mine sizes: 67 and 150 employees) were constructed with realistic ranges for estimates of injuries and WC premium costs. Using each state?s actual WC rate-setting formulas, total savings in WC costs after a three-year period were determined. Across both states, savings in WC premiums ranged from 1.8% to 14.6% when injuries were reduced by 10% to 20%. Additionally, an economic analysis was performed for an existing mine consisting of 67 employees. For this mine, the annual cost of a roof screening program was estimated at $240,000. If the screening prevented 13 ?struck by? WC claims over a 3-year period at this mine, the reduction in WC premiums alone could pay for the entire screening program.

This paper first discusses the physicochemical cleaning methods used to process fines followed by an analysis of the subprocesses of froth flotation and the adverse effects of slimes and particle oxidation. These subprocesses include the phenomena of interception, contact, adhesion and levitation. Preventive and corrective measures to combat the generation of fines and their effects are suggested. Preventive measures include controlled grinding, limited liberation, flotation at coarser sizes. Means of preventing oxidation and/or removing oxidation products are a1 so discussed. Corrective measure to increase recovery include intensive aeration, aggregation of particles, intensive mixing, increased retention time, and reduction of detachment. Measures leading to improves selectivity involve means to reduce slime coating, achieve selective mineralization of bubbles and minimize entrapment.

With the increasing need to mine lower grade ores, high energy-related costs in comminution are of major concern. Very fine grinding is needed to liberate the very fine mineral particles in these ores. Not only is this expensive but it leads to greater losses in 'slimes'. In the early 1970's, 50% of the tin mined in Bolivia, 30% of the phosphate mined in Florida and 20% of the world's tungsten were lost in this way (Somasundaran, 1979). Gravity concentration techniques become unacceptably inefficient for particle treatment below 25-50µm, and even flotation fails in the ultra-fine range. Two approaches can be adopted to try to overcome this problem. The first involves increasing the efficiency of existing equipment or developing new slimes treatment processes. Gravity devices such as the Bartles-Mozley concentrator have been developed for this purpose and good recovery has been reported from 100µm down to 5µm. Such machines, however, have relatively low throughputs, so that large areas of plant space are generally required. Flotation is rapidly growing in importance for the treatment of ultra-fine minerals traditionally treated by gravity concentration.

As a result of feasibility studies made in 1975 a 3-0 seismic reflection survey was shot over part of the Veendam salt pillow during 1978-1979. The Zechstein salt pillow, located in the northeast of the Netherlands near the town of veendam, occurs at a depth of 1400 m and contains three carnallite rich horizons over an interval of 300 m below top salt. MgCl2 brines are produced from these layers as feedstock for a magnesia plant, which starts up in 1981. Prior to the acquisition of the seismic data four wells had been drilled. The thickness of the carnallitite layers encountered in these wells varied between 50 and 125 meters. In view of these variations it was necessary to obtain a reliable isopach of the different layers. The 3-0 seismic survey covered an area of ± 4x4 km with a sampling interval of 20 m in all directions. The data was recorded it an area array using a 120 channel instrument. Final presentation of the data was in the form of 3-0 migrated acoustic impedance cross sections. The quality and resolution of the seismic data allowed reliable structural and isopach mans to be made. It was shown that the carnallitite layers are continuous over the area surveyed, whilst local thickening is "fault" related. Having this information brine production locations could be choosen in the thicker parts, allowing maximisation of production potential whilst avoiding faults and fulfilling mining regulations. A subsequent benefit of this approach is the possibility of using the seismic data to predict ore grade. Using the available wells as calibration points the acoustic impedance response of the seismic at the well was matched to the ore grade found. From these points a synthetic section was made with varying ore grades. Pre¬liminary results are encouraging and the liability of this predictive tool will be evaluated in the light of future drilling.

The effective employment of a pretensioned bolt within support structures requires an appropriate installation tension as a result of sufficient bolt head/nut preload. In this paper, a load indicator washer (LIW) able to withstand an assigned static loading as well as provide an appropriate pretension is presented. The different LIW breadths are numerically analyzed with ABAQUS finite-element code to estimate deformation when a designated 60 kN preload is applied. The numerical simulation employs the bilinear isotropic hardening constitutive law governed by the von Mises yield criterion. The simulation also considers the nominal temperature of the nut-LIW-rock bolt connection. Therefore, long-term relaxation effect on bolt pretension as a result of stress relaxation is neglected. The compressive force required to achieve the LIW predetermined deformation is the bolt pretension. It is drawn from the simulation results that LIWs with thicknesses of 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 mm are completely flattened when subjected to 28, 42.5, 65, 76 and 88 kN preloads, respectively.

The definition and shortcomings of traditional cutoff grades are discussed. The concept of optimum cutoff grade policy which maximizes the Net Present Value (NPV) of annual cash flows coming from a mining project is introduced within the basic framework outlined by K. F. Lane. Several examples are used to demonstrate the shortfalls of cutoff grade policies obtained by various heuristic optimization techniques. An algorithm to obtain an optimum cutoff grade policy which maximizes the NPV of a project is given and described in detail.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is an occupational health hazard in underground mines. It generally occurs in the submicron range, and is often present in the mine atmosphere with significant concentrations of dust particles that tend to occur in the supramicron range. Since dust can interfere with analytical methods to measure DPM, it is often removed from a sample stream using impactor-type size selector (diesel particulate matter impactor, DPMI). Because the DPMI physically removes oversized particles from the stream, its performance may be gradually reduced with aging. Sharp-cut cyclones (SCCs) represent an alternative size selector for DPM sampling applications, with a major advantage being that, by design, they should not be susceptible to rapid aging. This paper presents results of a field study designed to compare the performance of aged versus new/clean DPMIs and SCCs in an underground mine. DPMI aging resulted in clogging of the device, and eventually a reduction of its effective particle cut size – though, when sample flow rate was maintained, DPM sample mass collection was not affected until significant aging had occurred. Under the conditions present for this study, effects of SCC aging were observed to be minimal by the end of the study period. INTRODUCTION Submicron particles are increasingly recognized as significant respiratory health hazards (Cantrell and Watts, 1997; Kenny, et al., 2000; Ristovski, et al., 2012). Diesel particulate matter (DPM) represents a major source of submicron particles in both public and occupational environments (Kittleson, 1998; Abdul-Khalek et al., 1998). Due to their work around large equipment in confined spaces, underground miners have some of the highest exposures to DPM (EPA, 2002; Grau et al., 2004). DPM largely consists of solid elemental carbon (EC), commonly known as “soot”, and organic carbon (OC) that may be sorbed to EC particles (Kittleson, 1998; Abdul-Khalek et al., 1998). EC and OC can be measured by thermal-optical methods such as the NIOSH 5040 Standard Method (Birch, 2016), and their sum is referred to as total carbon (TC). While the complex nature of DPM does not allow for its direct measurement, both TC and EC have been accepted as suitable surrogates for monitoring occupational exposures to DPM (Noll et al., 2007 and Birch, 2016)."

Uranium is a very mobile element geochemically and is widely dispersed in the lithosphere and hydrosphere. Under oxidizing conditions, it is particularly widespread and appears in all parts of the surface hydrologic system. As a result, this system is a leading candidate in uranium-resource assessments as a new base from which total resources might be estimated. No other sampling system provides the large volume geochemical capture as the continental hydrosphere and is as pervasive and non-selective regardless of rock type. However, the water system as a uranium metal sampler is not without drawbacks as the development of a National sampling program based on it has shown, In spring 1973, the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) was announced by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). The program was conceived to provide an evaluation of the domestic uranium resources and to identify areas favorable for uranium exploration. The specific NURE objectives are as follows (Bowyer, 1974): 1. To provide a preliminary evaluation of domestic resources and favorable exploration areas by early 1976, based on existing data. 2. To conduct a comprehensive evaluation of domestic resources and favorable areas by 1980, based on advanced state-of-the-art information. 3. To conduct an R&D program into new and improved procedures, equipment, and technology for uranium exploration and assessment. 4. To disseminate information on new exploration concepts and technology.

The study aimed to evaluate the separation performance of a full-scale continuous centrifugal concentrator in the reconcentration of fine hematite from high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) concentrate in a tailings recovery plant, and to investigate the usefulness of the technology in industrial applications. The effect of changing the operating variables on concentrate grade and recovery was studied. The results indicate that among the variables considered in the study (water spray pressure, centrifugal acceleration, feed volume flow rate, feed percent solids and the reciprocation and spacing of water sprays), the change in centrifugal acceleration affects the recovery the most and continuous concentration can be achieved only when the water spray has a sufficient pressure. In addition, the reciprocation and spacing of the water sprays have a significant influence on the concentrate grade. Although performance of the full-scale concentrator is slightly inferior to pilot-scale trials, due to limitations in the scale-up design and the fluctuations of feed material characteristics, this concentrator provides a potential way to achieve continuous concentration and obtain a high-grade concentrate from tailings.

The dissolution behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions at 75°C has been investigated. The variables investigated include concentration of lixiviants, pH of the solution and various oxidants. The anodic dissolution of gold was studied in the absence of oxidants using the potentiodynamic polarization technique. The cathodic reaction of oxidants was studied on a platinum electrode. Tafel polarization tests were also performed to determine the dissolution rate. The overall dissolution of gold in ammoniacal solutions was examined using a mixed potential theory. A comparative study on the role of cupric am mine, oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite as oxidants for the dissolution of gold in ammoniacal solutions has been carried out.

Economic geologists faced with the task of evaluating phosphate rock deposits find it necessary to deal with a unique and a lengthy list of geologic, chemical, and economic factors before they can determine whether the deposit does, or does not, constitute "ore". The underlying fact is that phosphate rock concentrate sells at a price per ton that is among the lowest for all mineral commodities. A recent going price for a standard grade (i.e. 72% BPL) phosphate rock concentrate F.O.B. Tampa is $6.00 per long ton. This compares with sand and gravel's price of about $5.00 and $8.00, respectively, per ton. In the case of many, if not the great majority of mineral deposits, the evaluating geologist needs to concern himself principally with the fundamental and classic considerations of tonnage and grade. Barring some very unusual metallurgical problem any geologist that finds say 50 million tons of 1% copper rock, or substantial tonnages of 0.7% U308 sandstone, pretty well knows he has an ore body! Certainly the evaluation of phosphate rock starts with tonnage and grade. Any rock with less than about 10% P205 in the ground is generally ruled out as ore, on the basis of grade alone. Since nearly all phosphate rock operations must be of the large-tonnage, low-unit-value type, the tonnage of new reserves, to be considered as "ore", ought to be in the 100-million + class. INTRODUCTION The introduction of 165-mm (61/z-in.) holes to underground mining operations has made possible the application of Canadian Industries Ltd's (CIL) vertical crater retreat (VCR) mining method, illustrated in the accompanying sketches. This unique and revolutionary new application of spherical charge technology (see the Appendix), when applied to primary stopes and pillar recovery, eliminates raise boring, slot cutting, and dilu¬tion of ore by backfill; greatly improves fragmentation; reduces labor and time requirements; eliminates uphole drilling and blasting; and minimizes or completely elimi¬nates damages by blasts to the walls and retreating backs of the stope or pillar. If vertical large diameter holes are drilled on a designed pattern from a cut over a stope or pillar to bottom in the back of the undercut, and spherical charges of explosives are placed within these holes at the calculated optimum distance from the back of the undercut and detonated, a vertical thickness of ore will be blasted downwards into the previously mined area. Repeating this loading and blasting procedure, min¬ing of the stope or pillar retreats in the form of horizontal slices in a vertical upwards direction until the top sill is blasted and the mining of a stope or pillar is completed. The VCR method is also applicable to drop raises and has the potential to replace all other raising methods under most circumstances. PILLAR RECOVERY Levack Mine Inco Metals Co., Ontario Div., provided the first opportunity for the method in pillar recovery. The Levack mine's high grade ore pillar No. 4800 on the 975-m (3200-ft) level was used for the production¬scale experiment (Figs. 1 to 3). The pillar was about 49 m (160 ft) long, 6 m (20 ft) wide, and 20 to 26 m (65 to 85 ft) high. The mined area on both sides of the pillar was backfilled with a 1:30 cement:sand mixture. The pillar was removed in two phases. In phase 1, the standard uphole method was used to blast down the 18-m (60-ft) long section of waste from the bottom of the ore into the undercut. From the pillar's top sill, 165-mm (61/a-in.) holes were drilled downward into the pillar, and by measuring the depth of the holes, the results of the uphole blast were determined and roof line 1 was established. The bottom of each hole was plugged, then filled with sand to place the center of gravity of each spherical charge (loaded from the top sill) at a predetermined optimum distance from the horizontal free surface. The charges were then detonated. After detonation, both draw drifts were full of extremely well-broken material. The depth of each hole was measured again, and the plot of these depths re¬sulted in roof line 2. The same blasting procedure was repeated and the resultant new back elevation was marked by roof line 3. The poor results of the initial uphole blast at one location (notice the peak in area 1) appeared to influ¬ence the subsequent new backs. A third blast success¬fully evened the back, and resulted in roof line 4. An unblasted slab averaging 6.3 m (20.9 ft) thick remained below the pillar's top elevation as the final sill. In all three spherical charge blasts fragmentation of the blasted material was extremely fine. The backfill was fully exposed on both sides of the now-blasted pillar. The backfill remained undamaged and the ore was not diluted by sand. The remnants of all the 165-mm (61/2 -in.) holes remained clean and undamaged, and the holes had well-defined bottoms that could be easily measured and plugged. Each blast took down a 3.9 to 4.2-m (13 to 14-ft) thick horizontal slab of ore. Productivity was three times greater than that of the previously practiced cut-and-fill method. Since this was the first such experiment, blasting the remaining 6-m (20-ft) thick final slab was the sub¬ject of some deliberation. If the described method was repeated, we could have ended up with a 1.8-m (6-ft) thick sill unsafe to work on.
