INTRODUCTION If a uranium mill worker is involved in an accident, analysis of excreta for uranium content and[in vivo] counting methods are used to estimate the extent of the possible exposure and to predict the pattern of uranium distribution among tissues (Spitz, [et al]., 1980). Interpretations of urinary excretion data are based on studies of human exposures to single uranium compounds including U02, U308, U03, UF4, U02F2 and UF6 (Alexander, 1974). Refined uranium ore (yellowcake) is a variable mixture of U03-NH3-H20 adducts (ammonium diuranate, ADU) and their thermal conversion product, U308. The variability in composition of yellowcake (Kalkwarf, 1979; Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980; Dennis, Blauer and Kent, 1981) complicates the interpretation of bioassay data from individuals that might have inhaled any single yellowcake material. A test system would be useful to estimate the dissolution behavior of a particular yellowcake aerosol inhaled by a worker and aid in the interpretation of bioassay data collected before and after an accident. A series of experiments was conducted for this purpose. The objectives of these studies were to: 1) develop specific criteria for comparing [in vitro] dissolution systems and 2) use the criteria to evaluate solvents, methods and experimental temperature and pH conditions used in previous studies. Dissolution experiments were conducted using different combinations of solvents, conditions and methods with a common yellowcake sample. Because little information is available from human yellowcake inhalation exposures to evaluate the [in vitro] results, criteria for evaluation of different tests were derived from a model of yellowcake dissolution in lung constructed from a number of cases in which humans were exposed to single uranium compounds known to be in yellowcake (Mercer, 1975). MATERIALS AND METHODS Materials The powder used in the tests was taken from one lot of yellowcake obtained from a commercial uranium mill. The same powder was previously designated as Mill D in Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980 and Mill 2 in Kalkwarf, 1979. The ammonium diuranate content was measured by infrared absorption to be 25% ± 1% (Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980). Solvents The compositions of the two biological fluid simulants used are compared in Table 1. Simulated lung fluid (SLF) (Kalkwarf, 1979; Dennis, Blauer and Kent, 1981) was chosen to simulate the composition [ ] of lung fluid as closely as practical (Moss, 1979). Simulated blood serum ultrafiltrate (SUF) (Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980) was chosen because of previous successful efforts to model human urinary excretion of inhaled plutonium aerosols (Kanapilly Raabe and Boyd, 1974) and the dissolution rate of 241Am02 in Beagle dogs (Mewhinney and Griffith, 1981). Major differences are that simulated lung fluid contains Mg2+ and a higher Ca2+ concentration than SUF and that SUF contains ammonium ion. Both solvents include protein substitutes; acetate is used in SLF, while amino acids are used in SUF. Both solvents include phosphate but the chelating agent diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) is included in SUF to prevent possible formation of insoluble uranyl phosphate precipitates that would result in an underestimation of solubility. In addition to the above solvents, modified solvent compositions were prepared to investigate the role of specific salts in yellowcake dissolution studies. Solutions of SUF (Table 1) were prepared without DTPA (SUF-DTPA) and without amino acids (SUF-amino acids). No solution excluded both DTPA and amino acids. Discussion by G. Le Bel The paper proposes three methods to determine optimum lifetime of a mining project 1. The conclusion is that the three methods arrive at the same optimum production rate (by coincidence). It is also stated that: "The stochastic and option pricing models, in addition to providing a more realistic optimum mine life than the traditional NPV (net present value) calculation, showed that the example project has the potential for substantially higher return. By explicitly considering a project's potential risks, the stochastic or option pricing techniques can more accurately describe its probable investment performance." This discussion is intended to demonstrate that: •It is no coincidence that the three methods arrive at the same optimum production rate. • The stochastic and option pricing models do not provide a more realistic optimum mine life than the traditional NPV calculation. •The potential for a substantially higher return is misrepresented. First, a review of investment decision theory in mining is needed. Net present value is the preferred performance measure because of the flexibility offered when comparing various alternatives. However, it presents the following disadvantages: • The discount rate selection is not straightforward. • The NPV obtained represents a deterministic characterization of the variables included in the cash flow calculations, i.e. a single-point estimate. Discount rate selection The opportunity cost of capital represents the rate of return that would be obtained if the capital was instead invested in other opportunities considered to exist. Such opportunities must be bypassed if the available capital is invested in the project studied 2. If these other opportunities carry risk similar to the project under analysis (for example, if they are other mining projects), there is no need to add incremental [ ] risk factors. On the other hand, if these opportunities are represented by the acquisition of government bonds yielding 7%, a risk premium factor must be included. The types of risks associated with a mining venture are shown in Table 1. Together they represent the "business risk" of being a mining company. The individual project risk is important to investors if it differs substantially from the business risk of the company and that of the other investments in mining ventures that we must pass up to invest in this particular project. A risk premium or discount would then be required. This can be illustrated by the following example. Consider that a company has two investment alternatives: one is the Cavender hypothetical project located in Nevada, and the other is the same project located in a civil war zone of central Europe. The second project requires a risk premium factor on the discount rate. Conversely, a project showing highly uncertain returns that are negatively correlated with the returns of the firm's other assets may decrease the company's corporate risk. Deterministic character of NPV calculation The cash flows used in NPV calculations are obtained from a set of variables. These variables are estimated using one parameter obtained from the engineering studies. Each parameter is thus a single value that is often termed a "realistic" or "best estimate" as opposed to "optimistic" or "pessimistic." The fact that the Society of Mining Engineers has determined that two of the five environmental topics reviewed at the 1989 Annual Meeting relate to reclamation bonding indicates to me that those who are involved in the coal industry, no matter what capacity, remain very cognizant of the reclamation bonding dilemma.

INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY This short paper deals with the history of the Nickel Plate Mine from 1898 to 1987, with the major focus on the time period 1984 to 1987. Operations from 1898 to 1955 are reviewed in a cursory manner with the emphasis on some interesting points in the early 20th century. A review of the major exploration work carried out in 1984 to 1987 is presented and the process of moving the project through feasibility, government permitting and construction is described. The Hedley gold camp is situated approximately 40 kilometres east-southeast of Princeton, in southern British Columbia. The area has had a long history of gold mining and between 1902 and 1955 approximately 1.5 million ounces of gold were won from several mineralized skarn orebodies. Most production came from the Nickel Plate and Hedley Mascot mines. AN EARLY TO MID 20TH CENTURY SUMMARY The Nickel Plate is one of the oldest mines in the province. The mine had operated from 1904 to 1930 and, after a period of shutdown, from 1934 to 1955. The mine was revived in 1967 for exploration and. will resume production during the first half of 1987. In the first period the Yale Mining Company and Daly Reduction Company operated for six years and Hedley Gold Mining Company for twenty-one. In the second period the mine was operated by the Kelowna Exploration Company Limited and Kelowna Mines Hedley Limited for twenty-one years. In the present period the mine has been revived by Mascot Gold Mines Limited.

Albite (NaA1Si308) is one of the important raw materials for the rapidly developing Turkish ceramic and glass industry. Prior to 1980, development of the ceramic industry in terms of raw material was dependent upon small-scale mining operations; in the last decade, these efforts have increased substantially. The aim of this study is to investigate the geochemical properties and distribution of albite occurrences in the Kocayayla district, which is about 12 km northeast of the town of Milas, about 50 km west of the city of Mugla in southwestern Anatolia. Kocayayla is also well known for its famous ancient city, Labranda. The field area is located in the Menderes Massif, which was formed by major tectonic events during the Late Proterozoic and subsequent periods. The target area was studied to prepare a detailed geological map (scale, 1:10,000), and to determine the formation of albite-mica-schist-quartzite borders in the host rock gneiss. To do this, systematic sampling of albite was done in the two main areas, the Sarikaya and Yumruta? regions. In the study area, albite zones are scattered within an area of about 20 km2, and they extend in a northeast-southwest direction; mica-schists and quartzite veins accompany these units. Mineralogical observations show that quartz is the main mineral associated with albite. In the ceramic industry, the albite + quartz assemblage is well known and is classified as "standard" or "super type," depending upon the content of TiO2 and Fe203. In this study, the Sarikaya albites (profile I) exhibit remarkably lower TiO2 (0.15% on the average) values contrasted to that of Yumruta? (profile 11; 0.24% on the average), whereas Fe203 values vary slightly from 0.076% to 0.085% in both regions.

"Tunnel professionals should inform project stakeholders on the reality that tunnel projects are not 100 percent devoid of the need for excavations or public inconveniences during both design and construction phases. Competing stakeholder objectives to limit these disruptions must be weighed against the need to mitigate risks and to produce a constructible, operable and maintainable end product. Perhaps the approach we should take with stakeholders, also known as Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), is sharing memorable case studies that bring to life the potential risks so often buried within lengthy risk registers. This paper provides a sobering case study describing what can occur if the presence and/or location of utilities and other obstructions are not fully understood due to restrictions placed on exploration or mining operations. In this instance, the Microtunnel Tunnel Boring Machine (MTBM) encountered a buried concrete structure, followed by rows of abandoned wood piles, before finally colliding with an active high-pressure gas main under a bustling coastal highway. Multiple stakeholders imposed tight logistical and other work restrictions, compounding the difficulties experienced during the drive. However, the difficulties were effectively managed through the project team’s proactive collaboration and communication with everyone involved. INTRODUCTION Some of the most important decisions that influence the ultimate success or failure of a project may not be made by design engineers. Instead, these decisions are often made by project stakeholders and third-party agencies. Tasked with protecting the best interests of their users, these agencies are cautious of potential impacts associated with project construction and subsequent use. Unfortunately, actions required (or restricted) by stakeholders often result in unwanted ripple effects that negatively affect the very users they are trying to protect. For example, a mandate limiting a shaft site to an unreasonable size may be intended to reduce local business impacts, but may actually increase impacts as more supply and truck hauling is required."

In underground mining operations, ventilation and water sprays are the common methods of controlling dust. In recent years, there has been a proliferation of technical literature dealing with water sprays for dust control. However, guidelines for the design of an effective water spray system have not been presented to the mining industry. This paper recommends guidelines for water spray systems to control dust in underground mining operations. These guidelines suggest type, number, location, and orientation of nozzles; desirable operating water pressure; and associated filtration system.

A significant portion of each mine is ventilated with the help of auxiliary fans delivering fresh air to the faces of its developing headings via flexible or rigid ducts. Quality and volumes of air delivered to the blind working faces are essential for creation of safe and acceptable conditions for employed crews. Well designed and properly maintained delivery systems are necessary in each mine. The Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory, part of the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology located in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada, developed a tracer gas based technique which provides fast and accurate evaluation of any auxiliary ventilation system performance. In addition, important information about the system's behaviour is gathered which can be used for designing a similar system in comparable conditions.

A probability-based analysis method in conjunction with the finite element structure modeling technique to evaluate an entry system stability is developed. Variability of the rock properties and loading surrounding the entry system is taken into consideration to predict a roof stability by using the probability of failure instead of the common safety factor concept. A dynamic programming is applied to establish a recurrence relationship between the degree of potential roof fall and accumulated roof fall index in an area of interested. A probable distribution of roof fall is assessed by using a developed computer program, RFSTAB. The assessment of the roof falling boundary in the longwall entry system is used as the example to illustrate the procedure and effectiveness of this analysis method

The prime criteria in the design of underground openings with complicated geological structures is ground control. Stability of underground openings for deep mines is critical because incorrect orientation or geometry of shaft, stope, and accessways often results in the failure of openings due to high stress conditions. Current design procedures for complicated orientation and geometry of mines are rapidly becoming inadequate as mines are being developed. In this study, finite element method has been used with optimization criteria to design more stable and safe underground openings.

Theories are proposed to explain consistently a class of phenomena and are established with experiences, hypotheses, and laws. Not all concepts need to be presented in a mathematical format. A comminution theory must incorporate fracture physics, particle breakage, stressing events in crushers and mills, material transport, comminution kinetics and models, etc. In this paper the state of knowledge of some of these aspects is discussed. An attempt has been made to show the benefit of theory in comminution practice.

Liberation of valuable minerals from a gangue matrix during size reduction of multiphase mineral particles is an important objective in mineral separation processes. A methodology for the prediction of volumetric grade distribution from one dimensional, linear intercept image analysis is being developed using a transformation function to describe the relations hi p between the linear and volumetric grade distributions. As part of this research effort it has been found that a transformation function, derived from Monte Carlo simulations of irregularly shaped particles, mainly depends on the volumetric grade and the dispersion density, i.e., the number of nuclei (or grains) per particle. A possible mathematical form for the transformation function is described in detail.

The cobalt plant was successfully commissioned in mid-1983. It is located within the company's nickel - copper re finery situated in Springs, South Africa. Plant design, which began in 1981, made provision for the corrosive process environment, stringent environmental standards, and the latest noise abatement requirements. In addition, the process flowsheet for the primary recovery of the cobalt byproduct and the purging of six impurity metals (nickel, iron, copper, manganese, lead, and arsenic) was designed with simplicity as a primary objective. High purity cobalt powder has been produced since commissioning.

The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) implemented the Fe2+/ Fe3+-SO2 anode reaction in a Cu-electrowinning cell with full-size electrodes. Electrowinning was conducted using industrial electrolyte at 258 A/ m2 (24 A/ft2) and 40°C. Manifold injection of electrolyte provided circulation between the electrodes. Five-day operation using an optimized manifold gave an average cell voltage of 0.94 V at 89% current efficiency, which amounted to an energy savings of 2.82 MJ/kg (0.355 kW-hr/lb), compared to conventional electrowinning. Acid milling 5was completely eliminated, and the SO2 concentration 23 cm (9 in.) above the cell averaged 0.06 ppm.

This study summarizes the ventilation requirements for a highly mechanized P.T.Freeport Indonesia's underground mine operation in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) is a copper-gold deposit being developed underneath the current Intermediate Ore Zone (IOZ) mine. One of company's current plans is to prepare this mine for a steady oreflow of 25,000 tpd by year 2003. This study includes the estimation of airflow requirements for various mining activities, the design of major intakes and returns, the determination of airway resistances and specifications of fan duties. It also includes the results of air pressure/quantity measurements in existing airways and the standards stated by the current Indonesian mining law.

A new process for the recovery of pure (>99.95%) palladium and platinum is described. The process, which has been tested at the pilot scale, comprises (i) the simultaneous solvent extraction of palladium and platinum by a new Schering Berlin reagent, TN 1911, (ii) washing of the loaded extractant to remove co- extracted impurities, and (iii) differential stripping of first platinum at pH 3, and secondly palladium with strong hydrochloric acid, and (iv) precipitation of palladium and platinum salts, followed by reduction to metal. The process is, unusually, a non-ammonia one requiring only small amounts of ammonia at the end where final purification may be necessary for particularly complex feed solutions.

The pressure filtration behaviors of dispersed and flocculated alumnae slurries at high percent solids were investigated with the objective of determining the effect of surfactant type and concentration on slurry properties. A high-purity alumina powder was used as a model solid. Dispersion of the alumina was controlled by pH and by surfactants that are known to act as electric and steric stabilizers. The effects of both ionic and nonionic sutfactants were investigated. Surface charge measurements of the slurries were carried out by an electrokinetic sonic amplitude (ESA) method to better understand the mechanisms. The effect of surfactant type and concentration on the kinetics of pressure filtration and cake properties are discussed.
