Spinel ferrites, like NiFe2-2x Znx Ti4 O4 Fe CO1.5 Ge0.5 Tix O4, Ga1-x Fex Ni CO O4, Nil-x Fex Mn2 O4 have been prepared using the respective metal oxides in Stoichiometric quantities, by the ceramic method. The oxides were homogenized in acetone medium, pelletifed by using poly vinyl acetate as the binder. They were fired at 1000°C for 100 hours for compound formation. Chalcogenide spinels such as Zn1-x Cux Cr2 Se4 where 0=x=l and Cu1-x Fex Cr2 Se4 where 0=x=0.3 have been prepared by using 99.99% pure elements and then fired at 1000°C in quartz ampoules under vacuum conditions. X-ray diffraction studies of these compounds indicated a single cubic spinel phase. DC resistivity studies of the compounds were taken between 300-700K using LCR bridge by two probe technique. Thermo-electric power measurements were taken between 300-500K for all the compounds. Initial susceptibility studies have been carried out using a low field (0.506) and from which the nature of magnetic dimains and Curie temperatures were determined. Magnetic hysteresis measurements were carried out at 300K and at 80K, using alternating current hysteresis loop tracer, at 2K02 field. Mossbauer spectral measurements were carried out using Co57 source embedded in a copper matrix and an absorber containing 0.3 mg/cm2 of the sample. The spectra has been fitted by Mossfit Program. The catalytic effect of the spinel ferrites NiFe2-2x Znx Tix O4 where 0=x=1 has been studied by using the model reaction of decomposition of H2O2 at temperatures from 40°C to 70°C. It was found that the spinel oxides were found to possess poor catalytic activity.

In 1947, coal production in Western Canada was 10 Mt (11 million st) which predominantly came from 120 underground mines. By 1968 production was down to 1 Mt (1.1 million st). Production in 1981 was back up to 29 Mt (32 million st), but only 1.5 Mt (1.7 million st) of the total was from underground mines. In fact, because of competition from open-pit mines, only two underground mines were operating in 1981-the McIntyre and B.C. Coal mines. While several other underground mines are being planned, this article will deal with only the two in production. Geology The geology in Western Canada is frequently complicated; hence only more regular deposits are mined. Coal is generally thick, often steeply pitched and usually soft or well cleated. The 5000-km (3,100-mile) coal belt that runs from the Yukon to Mexico is well developed in Western Canada. It is divided into two distinct regions-the Rocky Mountain Lower Cretaceous coals and the mostly uniform level Upper Cretaceous coals of the plains area to the east. Isolated pockets of coal occur at Vancouver Island and Hat Creek. Hat Creek's massive 300-m (984-ft) thick geologically recent lignite deposit is 250 km (155 miles) inland. Geography The infrastructure of Western Canada is shown in Fig. 1 along with the locations of the two mines. Both rely on exports of premium low volatile metallurgical coal mostly to the Pacific Rim. The rail distance from both mines to port is 1100 km (684 miles)-accounting for a significant portion of the sales cost of the coal. Mining Methods Two main mining methods are used-room and pillar and hydraulic. Longwall has been attempted and is being considered again. In the past, a simple hand method used gravity to help mine most of the coal on steep pitches. Levels were driven in the seam, rising slightly to assist in draining. On the advance, mining would start at the upper level, usually from adits driven in the side of the mountain. Rooms or angles were driven up 100 m (328 ft) at a suitable angle for the coal to flow down. On retreating out of the level, the pillars would be taken, starting from the highest point, using batteries to stop coal or rock flushing down the room. Batteries consisted of three to six stout wooden posts set at an angle to resist material flow. Coal loading was directly from chutes at the bottom of raises into 1- to 2-t mine cars hauled by diesel or battery locomotives. Often output was restricted by the supply of empty cars. Mechanization began in the 1960s but was difficult in these conditions. Mines such as Canmore and Coleman continued operation into the 1970s but closed because steep seams, high methane emissions, and faulting made mining difficult. Introduction Pebble mill grinding can be defined as wet or dry grinding in a tumbling mill with pebbles used as grinding media instead of metal balls. To clarify the terminology, which may differ in the various mineral industries, it is essential to point out the differences between grinding with partially sized and carefully sized grinding media. When grinding with partially sized media (limited top size only), sizing is usually the setting of the primary crusher and there is no bottom sizing-all fines, chips, sand, and small sizes are included. This is often called run-of-mine or primary autogenous grinding. In this case the entire crusher discharge is fed into the mill and part of it becomes "charge" and the rest is "sand feed." When grinding with carefully sized media (i.e., media that is sized both at the top and bottom of the size range), no fines or chips should be present in the charge to the mill. This is pebble milling and the grinding media consists of ore, rock, Danish pebbles, gravel pebbles, or ceramic pebbles-media that is appreciably lighter than steel balls. The grind¬ing charge is fed to the mill to maintain a load and it does the grinding usually on a classified sand product of suitable size. If the grinding media is the same as the raw material being ground, this type of grinding is also called secondary autogenous grinding. Pebble milling was in common use in the gold mines of South Africa in the early 1900s. It is by far the oldest form of autogenous grinding. It may be used to grind crushed ores from a maximum size of about -% in. to all -10 µm. Pebble milling differs from "run of mine" grinding in many ways, but two big differences are: I) The ore itself is crushed to approximately t/4 in., or it may be further reduced to 8 or 10 mesh in a rod mill or fine crusher. 2) Then carefully screened ore of the correct size is placed in one or more stages of pebble mills to grind the ore to its desired final size. The media size is carefully selected to be the most efficient for the particular size reduction required in each stage. This is a precise practice, and pebble mills can be designed as easily and accu¬rately as can rod mills or ball mills by those skilled in the art. A pebble mill is a rotating cylinder in which the grinding media has been carefully sized for the job in hand. If the mill is doing coarse grinding, the media will be correspondingly large and the mill might be called a primary (or intermediate) pebble mill or a lump mill. If it is to do fine grinding, the media selected is proportionately smaller and the mill would be called a secondary or tertiary pebble mill. The media itself is normally rounded pebbles made from screened ore from the primary-crusher discharge. The charge could be rounded pebbles of the correct size removed from a primary autogenous mill, or the pebbles could be carefully sized gravel, sized beach pebbles, or sized flint pebbles. Usually the specific gravity of a pebble is from 35 to 55% of that of steel balls. It commonly varies from 2.66 to 4.2, depending on the specific gravity of the ore. Primary pebble mills, or lump mills, would be charged with pieces of rock up to 10 in. maximum and 5 in. minimum and would grind crusher discharge with a maximum size of 1/4 in. on hard ores and 3/8 in. on softer ores. Secondary pebble mills could be charged with pieces of rock screened on 4 x 4-in. square mesh and retained on 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 in. These mills would grind material with a top size of 8 to 10 mesh. Tertiary pebble mills could be charged with screened rock that would pass 3 x 3 in. and be retained on 1 x 1 in. and grind 35 to 48 mesh sands. Principles of Operation Media Size To operate a pebble mill efficiently it is imperative that great care be taken in screening the rock feed that is fed into the mill to round up into a range of pebble sizes that are suitable for grinding of the sands that are also being fed into the mill, having regard to the top size and the average size of such sands. Since most mill operators know from experience the correct size of steel balls to be used in a mill to handle different sizes of sand feed, it is convenient to relate the pebble size to a ball size. If the correct ball size is not known, it is relatively simple to conduct batch laboratory tests in 12- to 18-in. laboratory mills to determine the optimum size of steel ball. Also, Bond and others have published formulas for calculating the optimum ball size. When the correct size of the individual steel ball is known, then a pebble of the same weight will perform the same grinding if used in the proper size of mill and under the proper conditions, which will be defined later. This media size, as defined by the average weight of the individual pieces, is most important. The following tests will serve to clarify this point. Laboratory Tests Using Steel Balls or Pebbles. Several labora¬tory grinds were made to compare a given size and weight of steel ball with a pebble of the same weight but larger size, and of the same size but lighter weight. The following loads were used in the 12-in. laboratory mill: All 1 1/4-in. steel balls weighing 122 ± 10 g. All 1 3/4-in. pebbles weighing 123 ± 5 g. All 1 1/4-in. pebbles weighing 45 ± 3 g. To equalize capacity, the test with the steel balls was run only 34% as long as the tests with pebbles. In each case, 2,500 g of primary sands were ground at the optimum gravity for the media being tested at a speed 78 1/2 % of critical speed, and for 170, 340, and 680 revolu¬tions for the steel balls, and 500, 1,000, and 2,000 revolutions for the pebbles. The first test is summarized in Table 74 by showing the 80% passing size in microns for the feed and for each of the grinds. Two other tests are summarized in Table 75 showing the screen analyses

INTRODUCTION The National Park Service is entering the seventh year of monitoring caves for the presence of radon and radon daughter products. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the radiation monitoring program at Mammoth Cave National Park, and to present some of the results of this program. Mammoth Cave National Park completed five years of collecting data on May 1, 1981: although Mammoth Cave encompasses approximately 361 km of underground passageways, this paper will concentrate on only a 2.2 km section of the cave known as the Historic Tour. Included in this paper is a discussion of the methods the Nations Park Service uses to protect employees from exposure to alpha radiation. MONITORING METHODS The National Park Service monitors cave atmospheres utilizing the procedures provided by the Mine Safety and Health Administration in their Radiation Monitoring Training Manual (Anon., 1976). This procedure is described as the Kusnetz Method (Kusnetz, 1956) of radon daughter monitoring. Due to the length of the tours at Mammoth Cave, it has been determined to be the most practical procedure. The Historic Tour is a 2.2 km (1.4 mile) loop through passageways ranging in size from 18 m high by 12 m wide, to 0.9 m high by 0.6 m wide. Seven five minute walking samples were taken for this cave tour by drawing at least 10 1 of air through a 25 mm fiberglass filter utilizing a Monitaire Sampler Pump. The radon daughter concentration levels were determined using an alpha scintillation counter to measure the alpha activity on the filter paper. The Monitaire Sampler Pump was calibrated each day prior to monitoring the cave tour and the scintillation counter was calibrated by procedures described by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (Beckman, 1975) at six month intervals. Guidelines established by the National Park Service and approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration require weekly sampling when the average working level exceeds 0.30 (NPS-14, 1980). A working level is an atmospheric concentration of radon (Rn-222) daughters which will deliver 1.3 x 10 5 MeV of alpha energy per liter of air in decaying through Ra C' (Po-214). The Historic Tour has continually exceeded the 0.30 working level average and has been monitored weekly. Generally, only radon daughter working level data has been collected on the Historic Tour due to limited personnel. However, other special measurements of the uncombined fractions of radon daughters with wire screens, tsivoglou method for radon daughter sampling (Thomas modification, 1970), and thoron daughter monitoring. These special measurements have not been routine due to time limitations involved in radon daughter sampling of other occupied portions of the cave. SUMMARY OF DATA The Historic Tour has been the most consistantly monitored tour since elevated levels of alpha radiation were found to exist at Mammoth. Cave. It is also the only natural entrance to the main sections of the cave and provided an opportunity to study man made actions upon the natural entrance. For these reasons the Historic Tour was isolated for study. Beginning October 10, 1977, and ending November 20, 1977, a pilot project was undertaken involving the Historic Tour and the practice of covering the natural entrance to this tour with sheet metal in the winter months. The purpose was to study radiation levels on the Historice Tour while the covers were on and off the natural entrance. In this pilot project, comparisons were made with incast air with covers on and off the entrance, and outcast air with covers on and off the entrance. TABLE 1 Incast air Mean W.L. Decreased 5% Covers off. . . . 1.40 W.L. when covers on The natural entrance was artificially covered in the winter months (Yarborough, 1978) to protect the visitor from the extremely cold incast air, in the first four years of monitoring. The data in Table 1, illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, shows that this action increased the radon daughter working levels on the Historic Tour by 54% when the covers were on the entrance and the airflow was incast. While the air flow was outcast at the natural entrance, it made little difference as to whether the entrance was closed or open. Some interesting findings were observed when

Introduction A comprehensive project has been completed at the University of British Columbia that focused on the development of a commercially competitive composite cable bolt. Laboratory evaluation consisted of pull tests, preliminary shear tests, grout column testing and scanning electron microscope evaluation of the composite cable bolt. Field implementation at five underground mines throughout Canada were completed for technical and overall performance evaluation of the new product. The project began in 1989 under the sponsorship of HDRK Ltd., a consortium of mining companies including Inco, Noranda and Falconbridge Ltd. The objective was to develop a cuttable cable bolt that would serve as support for a continuous miner within a hardrock environment (Mah, 1994). The bolt was required to be cuttable by a continuous roadheader without adverse effects to equipment, personnel and the milling process. From the beginning, the focus was to employ existing cable bolt installation technology (Goris et al., 1994) whereby the cable bolts are grouted within a 4.8-cm-diam (1.08-in.diam) or larger employing a portland cement grout having a water: cement ratio between 0.35:1 to 0.4:1. The prototype, developed from Phase I, was technically comparable to that of conventional steel cable bolts. However, high cost and limited accessibility hindered its commercial acceptance. The second phase of the project was sponsored by the British Columbia Science Council and Pacific Pultrusions Ltd. of British Columbia to locally develop a glass fiber cable bolt. This phase of the project has resulted in the DAPPAM cable bolt (Pakalnis et al., 1994). DAPPAM Cable bolts are the second most used support method in Canadian underground mines after mechanical rock bolts. It is projected that 870,000 m (2.9 million ft) of cable bolts are installed annually in Canada (Poulin et al, 1994). The objective of the research program was to develop a glass fiber cable bolt with similar pullout strengths to the conventional steel cable bolts (267 kN - 60,000 lbf). More than 200 laboratory pull tests were conducted employing standard cable bolt test procedures, as outlined by the US Bureau of Mines (Goris, 1994), to assess optimum rod and surface composition, geometry, number required, pullout and shear characteristics, among others. This resulted in the DAPPAM cable bolt (Fig. 1). It consists of 10 individual 0.6cm-diam (0.25-in.-diam) rods enveloping a 2.2-cm (0.8-in.) outside diameter, high-density polyvinyl grout tube. The composite used in the construction of the rods is comprised of about 65% glass fiber within a 35% polyester resin matrix (by volume). Through pultrusion (a continuous fabrication technique), the fibers and resin are combined into a composite material. The strength of the overall composite is largely governed by the material properties, the alignment [ ] of the fibers relative to the applied load and the density and interaction of the overall components within the composite. A further modification to the composite was the addition of a sand grit to the surface of the individual rod. This increased the overall bond strength between the rod and the cement-based grout, used to solidify the cable bolt to the rock mass. The grout tube has an inside diameter of 1.9 cm (0.75 in.) and is rated at a pressure of 1.72 MPa (250 psi). During installation, the grout is pumped through the annulus of the grout tube thereby filling the hole from toe to collar. Laboratory and field trials concluded that a minimum drill hole diameter of 4.8 cm (1.08 in.) be used to ensure optimum grout coverage. Table 1 compares the design strengths (as tested) for DAPPAM vs. the ultimate strengths for a conventional 1.6cm (0.6-in.) steel cable bolt. The characteristics for the steel cable have been derived directly or indirectly by Goris et al. (1994). A design tensile strength of 289 kN (65,000 lbf) was proposed for the composite developed. However, recent tests have indicated maximum breaking strengths of more than 400 kN (90,000 lbf) (Fig. 2). Figure 2 shows the load vs. displacement pull out curves for steel and DAPPAM cable bolts. The methods of testing were standardized so as to be able to compare the results directly. The shear strength of the fiberglass cable is largely a function of the surface area sheared. Shear strengths of 89 kN (20,045 lbf) were obtained for the configuration shown in Fig. 1 when sheared normal to the axis of the cable. The testing procedure was similar to the shear tests performed on steel by Goris (1993). It is important to reinforce the implication that critical bond strength has on the success of an overall support system.

"This paper presents an overview and performance evaluation for a reconditioned decades aged open type hard rock TBM utilized for the twin running tunnel excavations of the Second Avenue Subway Project in Manhattan, New York. The TBM tunnel lengths are approximately 2,370 m (7,800 ft, east TBM Tunnel) and 2,190 m (7,200 ft, west TBM Tunnel) with a 6.7 m (22 ft) bored diameter. This “senior” TBM mined through metamorphic rocks consisting of schist, granofels, and pegmatite, and encountered various adverse geological structures, including some relatively heavy groundwater inflows. The ground support was generally pattern friction rock bolts, and steel sets were used in poor ground. This paper presents TBM characteristics and the subsequent performance, such as machine utilization, downtime, cutter consumption rate, net penetration rate, and daily advance rate. Machine operating parameters including thrust, torque, gripping force, and cutterhead RPM, are compared with various accompanying ground conditions. The performance changes between the adjacent tunnel sections are also presented. INTRODUCTION Project Overview The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction (MTACC)’s Second Avenue Subway (SAS) Program consists of four (4) phases from 125th Street to Manhattan Battery Park along the 2nd Avenue (see Figure 1) in Manhattan New York. As a part of Phase 1, Contract 1 was awarded to S3 JV (Skanska/Schiavone/Shea) to build a TBM launch box and subsequent twin TBM tunnels from 92nd Street to 63rd Street under 2nd Avenue. Contract 1 was one of the key contracts in Phase 1 to pre-excavate through the footprint of the follow-on underground stations (72nd St. Station, 86th St. Station, and 96th St. Station) by hard rock TBM excavation. The project team included Client MTACC, S3 Tunnel Constructors, Designer, Aecom-Arup JV, and Consultant Construction Manager, Parsons Brinckerhoff. The major elements of Contract 1 included construction of TBM Launch Box supported by secant pile and slurry walls and mining of twin TBM tunnels with a combined tunnel length of approximately 4,560 m (15,000 ft). The dimension of the TBM launch box was approximately 247 m (810 ft) long from 92nd Street to 95th Street, 21 m (70 ft) to 24 m (80ft) wide along the 2nd Avenue, and 18 m (60 ft) to 21 m (70 ft) deep from the ground surface. The launch box was later used for the follow-on 96th Street Station."

Federally owned mineral deposits generally fall into one of three categories: (1) minerals locatable under the General Mining Law of 1872; (2) minerals leasable under the Mineral Leasing kt of 1920; and (3) minerals salable under the Materials Act of 1947. Unlike valuable deposits of gold, silver, copper, iron, lead, etc., which may be locatable, industrial minerals are acquired through a variety of methods depending on use, composition, and date of acquisition. Table 1 may be used to establish the method of acquisition for most industrial minerals.

As a follow-up to a laboratory study, a pilot scale column for the flotation of coarse particles was designed and then tested in two different applications. In the first test, the concentration of a coarse phosphate ore (normally beneficiated by skin flotation in spirals) was carried out in a flotation plant in Florida. In the second pilot test, the column was used as a scavenger cell in the coarse flotation section of a potash beneficiation plant in Saskatchewan, Canada. Particle size of the phosphate feed was of the order of 0.6-1.0 mm and the potash feed 1-3 mm. The column was 1 feet diameter and was fed at rates between 0.5 to 1.4 tph. The effect of operating variables such as air and water flow rates, bubble size, frother concentration, residence time, sparger, etc were evaluated. The most important factors in column performance were found to be bubble size, air flow rate and the thickness of the froth bed. Best results were obtained in the absence of a froth bed, with low air flow rates and with small bubbles. The paper presents comparative performance and discusses details of the column design. Phosphate recoveries in the column were better than 90% whereas the conventional skin flotation circuit normally yields about 60% recovery for a comparable concentrate grade. Potash recovery from the tailings of the conventional flotation circuit was as high as 42% recovery. Particle size distribution of the potash concentrate was coarse enough to meet requirements for potash fertilizer.

Optimization has been defined as the procedure of locating the best of something or the best way of doing something (Mular, 1971). Several texts (Himmelblau, 1972; Ray and Szekeley, 1973; Box and Draper, 1969; and Lee, Adams, and Gaines, 1968) on the subject are available. Such techniques have been placed in two categories, namely, off-line optimization and on-line optimization. For the former, an optimization model is employed; for the latter, a black box approach is involved. The essence of an optimization problem becomes obvious, when a response surface is considered. Suppose that a response (in this case, a criterion of improvement such as profit per day; grade of concentrate per day) denoted by Y, depends only on two variables, X1 and X2, which can be manipulated and controlled. The relationship between Y, X1 and X2 may be represented graphically as shown in Fig. 1. The diagram is called a response surface and its height, Y, is determined by X1 and X2. Points associated with equal responses constitute response contours. The shape is that of a hill, and optimization is the procedure of ascending the hill to reach the top (maximum). In practice, a response surface is subject to disturbances which distort its shape and shift its location from time to time, so that the exact location of a maximum is imprecise. Generally, constraints (restrictions of some sort) on responses and manipulable variables serve to define a region of permissible operation.

INTRODUCTION Under a Federal grant by the Urban Mass Transit Administration (UMTA) (80%), and sponsored by the State of New York (200), Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority is constructing a 10.3 km (6.4 mile) light rail rapid transit system in Buffalo, New York. The $450 million project, which began construction in the Spring of 1979, is unique in rail transit alignment designs in the U.S.A. and the first predominantly underground light rail system in North America. The Buffalo project is unique in that the first phase of the expandable system follows the alignment of Main Street and is on the surface in a proposed 1.6 km (1.0 mile) pedestrian mall in the downtown business district. The alignment then progresses northward into a cut-and-cover portal and standard double-box configuration for 2.74 km (1.7 miles) at a depth of 9.1-10.7 m (30-35 ft) and subsequently drops into bedrock at depths of 18.3-27.4 m (60 to 90 ft). The 5.63 km (3.5 mile) rock tunnel section consists of two single tunnels 4.88 m (16.0 ft) nominal finished diam. and includes five stations. The rock tunnel line section was divided into a north and south contract of 2 316 m (7,600 ft) and 3 243 m (10,640 ft), respectively. Rotary Percussion drilling has shown great improvement over rotary drilling, when hard roof is encountered. In addition, Rotary Percussion drills have eliminated the need for air drills in many applications. Improved drilling rates have been achieved but roof bolting is still a bottleneck in many operations and the demand for further improvement will continue. Drilling rates beyond current performance is limited by the capabilities of existing drill steels and bits to resist increased horsepower input. The most apparent immediate solution to improved drilling is to increase the strength and rigidity of the drill steels. Drilling experience indicates that a l-1/2" diameter or 1-5/8" diameter hole can be drilled as rapidly or 'more rapidly than the standard 1-3/8" diameter hole. Greater torque and thrust capacities can be achieved through the use of larger O. D. and I. D, steels, however, this is only possible if the larger hole sizes can be made allowable. Large diameter anchorage shells can be made available at a slight extra cost.

High resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric data have been shown to optimize exploration for epithermal gold deposits in the vicinity of Charters Towers, northeastern Queensland. The radiometric data allow extrapolation of poorly outcropping geology to provide a cost-effective mapping technique, even at exploration scales (eg. 1:25,000). At a regional scale (eg. 1 : 100,000) the magnetic data reflect the regional tectonics and divide the area into domains for the application of different genetic models. For example: 1. the Ravenswood Batholith is characterized by multiple intrusions dating from Ordovician to Permian age. The polarity of the magnetic anomalies implies an age for the intrusions and indicates a deposit style for exploration. 2. extensional and wrench tectonics along the northern margin of the Drummond Basin are interpreted from the magnetic data and indicate favourable blocks for detailed exploration. Genetic exploration models may be tested in favourable environments by the recognition of geophysical signatures. These signatures reflect structural, lithological and alteration patterns arising from controls on ore deposits and can be applied at regional or detailed scales.

The incidence of heat stroke in the South African gold mining industry is today small (less than 1 in 10 6 shifts worked). Acclimatization and selection procedures have been developed and applied throughout the industry, underground working conditions have, and are being improved, and personnel are to-day made more aware of heat stress and its consequences than ever before. Although these actions have, over the years, brought about a steady reduction in the incidence of heat stroke (see Figure 1) the small incidence of heat stroke which persists indicates that heat stress is still a problem. This realization provides the stimulus for the work presented in this paper, which has as its primary objective the development of reliable heat stress limits for men working in South African gold mines. A portion of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's Red Line Extension through Somerville, Massachusetts consists of 1,553cm (5,092 LF) of hard rock tunneling 6.7m (22 ft.) diameter horeshoe, 148m (485 LF) of mixed face tunneling, 7.2m (23 ft.) diameter circular, beneath an active railroad in a heavily commercialized business district. This paper will deal with the excavation of the mixed face area without the use of a shield. It will address the special excavation and support problems encountered during tunneling operations using the floating crown bar and modified spiling methods. Topics covered will include excavation and support methods, cement grouting, compaction grouting, and instrumentation. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Davis Square to Porter Square Tunnels and Shafts Somerville/ Cambridge, Massachusetts is part of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's (MBTA) 5.1km (17,000 ft.) Red Line Extension. This extension runs from Harvard Square, Cambridge, to Alewife Brook Parkway, Cambridge through Somerville. This portion (MBTA Contract #091-106) required the excavation and concreting of 1,701m (5,580 LF) of single track twin tunnels consisting of 1,553m (5,092 LF) of conventional hard rock tunneling under 56 residential properties and 148m (485 LF) of mixed face tunneling beneath an active railroad in a heavily commercialized business district. The mined diameter of the mixed face tunnel is 7.16m (23.5 ft.) Access to the tunnel was via the Summer Street vent shaft, and the two Grove Street access shafts where all tunnel excavated materials were removed.

This Bureau of Mines report describes methane liberation trends from all U.S. coal mines liberating over 100 Mcfd (100,000 cfd) (2.8 Mm3/d). Detailed are results from the latest Bureau survey performed in 1985 and shown are mine and company name, location, coalbed and methane liberation quantity. The report shows that in 1985, there were 180 mines producing more than 100 Mcfd (2.8 Mm3/d) and the total quantity of methane liberated by these mines was 303,900 Mcfd (8,605 Mm3/d). This data is compared with previous studies performed in 1971 , 1973, 1975, and 1980. From 1971 to 1985, there was a 10% decrease in the number of mines liberating at least 100 Mcfd (2.8 Mm3/d) but there was a dramatic 34% increase of liberations from these mines. The increase seems to be caused by new mines being developed in deeper, gassier coalbeds, particularly in Alabama. Likewise, in comparing the ten highest liberating mines in 1975, 1980, and 1985, an increase in methane liberations each year was experienced. The report classifies mines by three levels of liberations: greater than 100 Mcfd but less than 500 Mcfd (2.8 to 14 Mm3/d); 500 Mcfd to 1 ,000 Mcfd (1 4 to 28 Mm3/d); and greater than 1,000 Mcfd (>28 Mm3/d). It was found that 87% of liberations were from mines producing over 1,000 Mcfd but these accounted for only 38% of all the mines in the study.

Groundwater inflow and impacts have become major aspects in the permitting and operation of many gold mines. First, the hydrothermal or placer genesis of many of the orebodies being investigated or produced today almost guarantees that mines will be "wet", involving groundwater control as part of operations. Second, the style of ore deposition a1 so often involves a1teration of the host rock, resulting in relatively weak, low permeabi1ity materials that require extensive groundwater pressure control for stable mining. Third, the location of many mines in arid areas guarantees that impacts on water resources will be matters of key focus during permitting and operation. However, groundwater control and protection is a technically difficult area and often involves managerial decisions and activities that do not fit comfortably into traditional mining. In an attempt to overcome some of these difficulties, this paper provides a guide to mine managers and hydrologists as to appropriate strategies for designing, setting up, operating, and evaluating groundwater programs at gold mines that get the job done and are cost effective.

The effect of cooling rate on the flotation behaviour of copper slags of flash smelter plant in Samsun was investigated. Fresh molten slag was solidified in laboratory scale in three different ways. All the samples were characterized by chemical and mineralogical analyses. The chemical analyses showed that samples prepared from fresh slag had 0.9 to 1 % Cu with 40 % Fe and 30 to 32 % SO2. Old pit slag samples contained between 1 to 3% copper. Microphotographs showed that rapidly cooled slags showed fine size distributions, e.g. the copper grains in granulated slag had sizes in 1-2 microns. On the other hand, the size of copper grains in slowly cooled slags increased above 40 microns. Flotation tests carried out by using potassium amyl xanthate and Flotanol-C showed that slowly cooled slag reduced the copper losses in the tailing and improved the grade of concentrate. Under the light of laboratory investigation, the pit dimensions of Samsun Plant have been modified which resulted in a pronounced improvement of the grade and recovery of concentrate produced at Samsun slag flotation circuit.

INTRODUCTION The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was required, under Section 114(c) of Public Law 95-604, to provide a report to Congress identifying the location, and potential health, safety and environmental hazards of uranium mine wastes together with recommendations, if any, for a program to eliminate the hazards. The approach taken to prepare the report was to develop model active and inactive mines and locate them in a typical mining area to estimate their environmental impact. A list of uranium mines was acquired from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The inactive mines were separated from the list and sorted into surface and underground categories. A literature search was conducted to obtain and consolidate available information concerning the environmental aspects of uranium mining and shortterm field surveys and studies were conducted to augment this information base. Radioactivity emission rates were measured or estimated for each mining category and were entered into computor codes to assess population exposures and subsequent health risks. The general environmental condition of inactive uranium mines was determined by walk-through surveys in several mining areas. INACTIVE SURFACE MINES We assumed that a model inactive surface mine contains a single pit with the wastes (overburden and sub-ore) stacked into a pile adjacent to the pit area. No credit for reclamation is given to the model mine. In lieu of the availability of individual mine production statistics, the model surface mine size was established from the total ore and waste production statistics for all surface mines, divided by the number of inactive surface mines. The number of inactive mines, obtained from the DOE mine listing, are summarized by type and location (Table 1). For modeling, we assumed that there are 1,250 inactive surface mines. The total or cumulative waste and ore production for inactive surface mines from 1950 to 1978 is not fully documented. Uranium mine waste and ore production statistics, on an annual basis, were available for both surface and underground producers from 1959 to 1976 (D0159-76). In order to estimate waste accumulated prior to 1959, the waste-to-ore ratios from the 1959 to 1976 period were plotted vs. time and line-fitted by regression analysis (Figure 1). Unfortunately, the extrapolation of the line to years prior 1959 approached zero in 1954 although surface mining began in 1950. Therefore, a waste-to-ore ratio of 8:1 was used for the period of 1950 to 1959 based on ratios estimated by Clark (C174). The waste to-ore ratios for 1976 to 1978 were estimated using the line established in Figure 1. By using waste-to-ore ratios and ore production data, the cumulative waste and ore production for both surface and underground uranium mining is estimated to 1978 (Table 2). The estimated cumulative waste from uranium surface mining for 1950 to 1978 is 1.73 x 109 MT. A crude estimate of the waste accumulated at the model inactive surface mine can be made by dividing the total waste produced to 1978 by the number of inactive mines. This, however, overestimates the waste tonnage because some of the contemporary wastes are being produced by active mines, and the waste accumulated at newer mines has increased in recent years. To adjust for this overestimate, we assumed that all mines operating in 1970 will be inactive by 1978. This eight year period is approximately one-half the lifetime of a model

Introduction The objective of the design and operation of a mine is to make as much money as possible within certain reasonable and responsible constraints. The imposition of constraints on the objective of maximizing profits can result in an optimum mine design. This paper deals with the maximization of profits. Optimization will be discussed in a future paper. In the mining industry, it is generally accepted that the maximum economic recovery is defined by identifying the reserves and the sequence of mining that results in maximum net present value (NPV) or discounted cash flow-rate of return (DCF-ROR), as indicated in Fig. 1 (see Lemieux, 2000). Current parametric analyses techniques, such as varying the mining costs; profit reservation; sales price or metal content, to define pit limits and mining sequence technically referred to single, double or triple parameterization, do not assure that the curve in Fig. 1 will be maximized. In defining the sequence, the first material to be mined should be the first grouping of recoverable mineral that has the highest after-tax unit value and that forms a feasible mining unit. The assumed mining of the first pit should be followed by the assumed mining of the second most profitable and practical pit or pit expansion. If this process of grouping and sequencing is followed until the profitability approaches zero, the general sequence required to extract the maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified. The curve in Fig. I is constructed by calculating the NPV for a series of sequences, each assuming operations are terminated on successively lower profit pits. If the operation ceases on a pit with too high of a profit, opportunity is lost, and the NPV is lower than the maximum. The NPV curve peaks and then starts to decline before the zero-profit pit is assumed mined. This occurs because the money invested in advanced stripping would have produced a greater return if it was invested at the dis¬count rate. The maximum economically recoverable reserve is defined by the pit limit corresponding to the maximum NPV or DCF-ROR. Pit and phase definition The real challenge of reserve definition is identifying the phasing and after-tax profit per ton, so that the curve in Fig. 1 can be plotted. The after-tax profit cannot be properly addressed until after the pits are designed, the production is scheduled and the cash flow is estimated. Throughout the years, many investigators have ad¬dressed this problem. A major thrust of the famous paper in which Lerchs and Grossman (1965) presented their algorithm was to identify a sequence that would produce a result similar to that identified in Fig. 1. Whittle's (1988) four-dimensional analysis is designed to address this issue. The author addressed this same issue in a paper presented to the 1968 Canadian Institute of Mining national convention (Lemieux, 1968). Without a relatively simple methodology to con¬struct the curve in Fig. 1, the number of iterations in a trial-and-error method becomes prohibitively burden-some. The pit designer seeks a simple pit-planning parameter that will serve as a proxy for the after-tax profit per ton used in defining the curve in Fig. 1. The designer's goal is to apply this pit-planning parameter using standard pit-wall location techniques to design a series of pits that will provide a guide to the sequencing. Common techniques used to position pit walls are strip-ratio limits, highwall incremental analysis, floating-cone methods or "maximizer" applications1. Costs, revenues, noncash charges, taxes and profits are usually structured on a unit basis for use in the pit-wall location analysis. Application of the proxy parameter using the pit-design tools should, ideally, result in the definition of pits and sequences that will maximize the curve in Fig. 1. 1 The pit-design tool frequently referred to in the literature as an "optimizer" defines a pit boundary that maximizes the value contained within based on the input parameters and the safe pit-wall angle. The optimization of the pit design involves selection of rate of production, cutoff grade, product quality and other considerations. These considerations constrain the maximization of value. Therefore, pit-design tools that maximize value should be called "maximizers."

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Lucky Friday mine is located in Mullan, Sho-¬shone County, Idaho. The mining method is horizontal slice cut-and-fill (with timbering for support or un¬timbered) using hydraulic sand. Cemented sand fill at a 1:17 ratio is used in sill pours and at a 1:7 ratio for the final 152 mm (6 in.) capping in successive stope floor pours. Annual production with 100% cut-and-fill mining is 167 829 t (185,000 st). The average depth of mining is 1296 m (4250 ft) and the average travel time to the stope is 45 min. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size The ore body is 396 to 488 m (1300 to 1600 ft) long on strike, 1421 m (4660 ft) on dip, with an average width of 2.3 m (7.5 ft). Dip varies from vertical to1.2 rad (70°) Ground Conditions, Ore Value, and Production Requirements The ore body contains quite strong argentiferous galena and quartz. The hanging wall and footwall are strongly sheared and fractured. Ore value is $211/t ($192/st).
