The Janet Annenberg Hooker Hall of Geology, Gems and Minerals, located in the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, in Washington DC, opened in September, nine years after initial fundraising efforts were begun. The 1,858-m2 (20,000-sq ft), $16-million hall was mostly funded by private groups and individuals, including $1.7 million from 43 National Mining Associa¬tion (NMA) member companies. Companies that contributed more than $100,000 included Cyprus Amax, Phelps Dodge, Asarco, Homestake Mining, BHP, Caterpillar, Cleveland Cliffs, Exxon Coal and Minerals, Freeport-McMoRan, Newmont Mining and Peabody Holdings. The mining industry's contributions funded a walk-through Mine Gallery. It. features diora¬mas of four mines, as well as numerous specimens associated with the mines. The Mine Gal¬lery demonstrates to the public the importance of mining. The hall was named in honor of Hooker. She contributed $5 million in cash plus the Hooker Yellow Starburst Diamonds to the project. The hall is touted by the Smithsonian as the "most comprehensive earth science complex of its kind." It consists of seven galleries, each devoted to different aspects of gems, minerals and rocks. In addition to the Mine Gal¬lery, the hall contains a collection of gemstones and jewelry pieces, an extensive collection of minerals, a gallery devoted to plate tectonics and a gallery devoted to the moon, meteorites and the solar system. The new hall is a complete makeover of the old and outdated Geology Hall. It was built in the 1960s and finally closed to the public in 1995.

Quebrada Blanca (QB) is a copper project located in the semi-arid Andean highlands of northern Chile. The operation is situated 170 km ( 105 miles) southeast of the port of Iquique and 30 km (18 miles) west of the border with Bolivia, at an altitude of about 4300 m (14,000 ft) (Fig. 1). The QB ore body is a secondarily enriched porphyry copper deposit containing reserves of 85 Mt (93 million st) grading 1.3% copper. Underlying the enriched zone is a significant primary ore zone containing several hundred million tons grading about 0.5% copper. In the late 1970s and early 1980s Falconbridge and its affiliates spent $20- $30 million exploring the deposit and conducting feasibility studies. Falconbridge, however, decided not to develop the property. It was returned to its owners, Empresa National de Mineria (ENAMI), a Chilean state mining corporation. In 1988, ENAMI announced its intention to privatize the property through public bidding. Cominco Resources, then 61% owned by Cominco Ltd., examined the property and the extensive data base developed by Falconbridge. In conjunction with its parent company, Cominco Resources submitted a proposal to ENAMI to construct an open- pit mine, with heap leaching and solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX-EW) processing facilities. The plan would use patented heap leaching technology developed by Sociedad MineraPudahuel (SMP), a privately owned Chilean mining company. At that time, a $150-million project that would produce about 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) of cathode copper was envisaged.

Introduction As with many gravity concentration processes, pneumatic concen¬tration traces its origin in antiquity. The use of winnowing to separate chaff from grain has long been known, and such procedures were undoubtedly practiced in ancient civilizations for the concentration of ores and the separation of slag from metal whenever specific gravity, size, and shape differences were favorable. Taggart142 has reported on the use of dry rockers and dry panning techniques for use with gold ores in arid regions such as Western Australia. The present day air table was developed in the last century for this purpose. Devices and Processes Classification. All classifiers make a separation on the basis of size, shape, and specific gravity. In addition to specific gravity and size, particle shape factor is often particularly important to pneumatic processes, and advantage is taken of the fact that both flat and fibrous particles settle at velocities substantially lower than that of their equiv¬alent spheres. Another factor of importance in this process is the bulk density of the material since substances such as exfoliated ver¬miculite or partially opened fibrils of asbestos have bulk densities significantly lower than those of the pure in situ mineral. Winnowing takes advantage of all of these physical factors to affect a separation starting with a closely sized feed, and vermiculite has been separated from rock by this process.142 When air classifiers are used to size minerals, the separation will often not be perfect because heavy particles will respond similarly to somewhat coarser light particles while flat, elongated, and low bulk density particles will act as would particles finer than the cut size. An example of a classification process that also results in concentration is the zig-zag classifier"' used to separate paper from glass, metal bottles, and cans during the recycle of municipal solid waste. Application of this process to minerals showing the proper specific gravity, size, and shape differ¬ences is obvious. An important device of this type is an air-aspirated screen used to remove asbestos from its associated rock during the dry processing of that mineral.144 The raw ore is crushed and screened and the asbes¬tos removed by aspiration from the surface of the screen by virtue of its shape and low bulk density. Hindered Settling. Based on the discussion in the section on "Hindered Settling Concentration and Jigging," the use of air devices could be anticipated in desert areas or where moisture may be deleteri¬ous to the product to be separated. Such processes have three major defects: (1) dust may be difficult to contain, (2) fines are difficult to process, and (3) the process is inherently less efficient than are wet processes as may be seen from Eqs. 3 and 4 in the section on "Hindered Settling Concentration and Jigging p. 4-47." Taggart142 has reported on the use of both dry panning and a dry rocker for gold separation in and regions. The dry panning makes use of winnowing, defection on the basis of specific gravity and shape during fall, and hindered settling. Prescreened placer material is poured from one pan to another as air blows across the falling stream. The process is repeated many times with hand picking to produce a rough concentrate. Magnetic minerals are then removed, and the residue, one grain deep in the pan, is air blown. In dry rocking the gravel is sized on a steeply inclined screen with the undersize fed to a riffle box with a porous bottom which is blown from underneath."' This device was the forerunner of the present-day air table. Air Tables and Jigs.145. 146 At least nine types of these devices have been developed, all but two of them for coal. While the devices used for coal may be characterized as pneumatic jigs, pneumatic tables, and pneumatic landers,145 only pneumatic jigs survive today. The same is true for ores.'" In these devices presized particles are fed to the separator which consists of an inclined vibrating conveyor with a porous surface through which air is carefully introduced to form a fluid bed. The lighter particles are lifted by the air out of uphill conveyance and float downhill, while the heavier particles in contact with the surface are conveyed uphill by the vibrator. Typically both transverse and longitudinal slopes are used. A plan view of a Triple S air table and the type of separation made is shown in Fig. 44.147 Because of its external appearance, the device has been called an air table, although it functions essentially as a jig. However, some of the asymetrical acceleration conveying function of a standard shak¬ing table is also performed by the eccentric vibrator incorporated into this device. Low pressure air is admitted below the vibrating table surface consisting of cloth (e.g., canvas), porous plastic, woven wire, or punched metal supported on a wire mesh or grid. As with a shaking table, the device produces a concentrate, middlings, and tailings. The middlings are recycled or are subsequently treated on another concentrating device. As with many wet separations, presizing by screening is necessary. The oft-repeated admonition of Professor Richards, "Separation without classification is damnation," is cer¬tainly true here. In this way a small heavy particle which might weigh the same as a large light particle and thus report to the same place on the air table has already been removed in the sizing step. Air tables are almost universally encased with a canopy to remove dust by aspiration. Some concentration may also be achieved in this step when favorable specific gravity, size, and shape differences are present. Applications Ore Separations. Air tables were originally developed for ore separations, and they find application in and regions or where water is deleterious or inconvenient to use or remove (e.g., small tonnage materials already dried). They have been used for asbestos, bauxite, calcite, cassiterite, columbite-tentalite, diatomaceous earth, fluorite, gilsonite, graphite, kyanite, manganese minerals, mica, managite, perlite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, vermiculite, and uraninite ores. More recently, air tables have found favor in separating a wide variety of secondary materials such as abrasive grains, bone char, catalysts, fiberglass, scrap glass, scrap wire from its insulation, prills from slag, dross and coke from metal or from each other, metal from crushed crucibles, lead from plastic in old batteries, and cubic particles from flat ones. The devices also finds considerable application in the preparation of food¬stuffs. 2.1 INTRODUCTION When total extraction of an opening of sufficient size is reached in a horizontal coal seam, the roof strata in the overburden deform continuously to reach a new equilibrium condition. The severity of deformation decreases upward toward the surface. As the downward saggings of the strata propagate and reach the surface, there will be a depression zone on the surface directly above, but extending beyond the edges of the underground opening. This is the surface subsidence basin or surface subsidence trough. The surface subsidence basin is circular in plan view, if the coal seam is horizontal and the mined-out opening is square in shape. But it is rectangular with rounded corners or elliptical if the coal seam is horizontal and the mined-out opening is a long- and thin rectangle or a short-rectangular, respectively (Fig. 2.1). Most underground openings (e.g., longwall panel) assume rectangular shape when total extraction has been completed. Theoretically the edges of the subsidence basin are the points of zero subsidence. But it is difficult to exactly locate the points of zero subsidence. Therefore in practice the points with vertical subsidence of 0.4 in. (10 mm) are used. The final subsidence basin is that which exists long after the mining has been completed, because its magnitude and shape are quite different from the dynamic subsidence basin formed while the face is moving. 2.2 CHARACTERISTICS AND TYPES OF DEFORMATION IN THE FINAL SUBSIDENCE BASIN For a horizontal coal seam, every point in the subsidence basin moves toward the center of the basin. Subsidence is maximum at the center of the basin. Any cross-section that passes through the point of maximum subsidence and either parallel to AB or CD line (Fig. 2.1) is a major cross-section along which principal directions of surface movements occur. However among those infinite numbers of major cross-sections, two specific ones are of special significance, not only because the magnitudes of surface movements are the largest, but also because they are the most easily identifiable directions, i.e., one that is parallel to the faceline at the center of the basin (CD in Fig. 2.1) and' the other is that perpendicular to the faceline but parallel to the diction of face advance (AB in Fig. 2.1). Nearly all the subsidence data obtained in the US have been derived from these two cross-sections, although some cross- sections parallel to CD but near the edges of the panel have also been included. In addition to moving horizontally toward the center of the basin, every point in the basin also subsides vertically. The magnitude of subsidence increases toward the center of the basin. Therefore surface subsidence is a three-dimensional problem and should be treated so in all cases. On all the major cross-sections, only principal subsidence and principal displacement occur. Since subsidence and displacement vary continuously in every major cross-section, three additional deformation components are de- rived, i.e., slope, curvature, and strain. On all other non-major cross-sections on the other hand the five components are accompanied by two additional components, i.e., twisting and shear strain. The seven components of the surface movement are defined as follows (Fig. 2.2): 1. Subsidence, S. On any cross-section, the vertical component of the surface movement vector is called surface subsidence. It generally points downward. But sometimes it points upward in areas ahead of the faceline or beyond the edges of the opening. In such cases it is a surface heave which is usually less than 6 in. 2. Displacement, U. On any cross-section, the horizontal component of the surface movement vector is called surface horizontal displacement. It generally points toward the center of the subsidence basin. But in steep terrain, it moves along the downdip direction 3. Slope, i. On any cross-section, the difference in surface subsidence between the two end points of a line section divided by the horizontal distance between the two points is called the surface slope of the section. 4. Curvature, K. On any cross-section, the difference in surface slope between two adjacent line sections divided by the average length of the two line sections is called the surface curvature of those two line sections. There are two types of curvature: con- vex or positive curvature and concave or negative curvature. 5. Horizontal strain, e. On any cross-section, the difference in horizontal displacement between any two points divided by the distance between the two points is called horizontal strain. If the distance between the two points is lengthening, it is tensile strain with positive sign. Conversely, if it is shortening, it is compressive strain with negative sign 6. Twisting, T. On the surface of the subsidence basin, the difference in slope between two parallel line sections divided by the distance between the two line sections is called twisting. 7. Shear strain, y. Shear strain is the changes in internal angles of a square on the surface of the subsidence basin or on any major cross-section. It is the summation of the differences in incremental (or decremental) lengths between the two opposite sides divided by the original distance between the two opposite sides. More precisely, the surface deformation indices (i.e., slope, strain, curvature, twisting and shear) are defined by derivatives of surface movement components. For simplicity, the x- and y-axes of the cartesian coordinate system are set to be parallel and perpendicular to the cross-section of interest, respectively. In such a coordinate system, slope and curvature along x direction are the first and the second derivatives of the vertical components (S) of surface movement with respect to x, respectively, or i, = ds/dx and kx = d2s/dx2. Horizontal strain along x direction is the first derivative of the component along x direction of the horizontal displacement,

Over one half billion tons of coal per year is scalped, classified, deslimed, drained and rinsed, dewatered and final sized on rotary, vibrating, shaking or stationary screens. The vibrating screen is the industry work horse and performs the bulk of the screening functions in the coal preparation plant. There are two major types of brute force mechanical vibrating screens used in coal preparation plants: (1) the two-bearing one-shaft inclined screen and (2) the four-bearing two-shaft horizontal screen. Both of these types are familiar to coal producers.

The economic value of calcium carbonate when used as an extender or filler basically falls into two categories: 1. Lessening the cost of the final product to which it is added. 2. Contributing desirable physicals to the final product. In most instances, a combination of these two may be achieved. The mineral limestone which is found in abundant quantities in many areas of the world is the source of 99% (+) of the calcium carbonate used as fillers and extenders. Precipitated, or chemically formed, calcium carbonate is also available, but by comparison, in very limited quantities.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the New Mexico Bureau of Mines is conducting an assessment of mineral resources in the 36,800 km2 Mimbres Resource Area, southwestern New Mexico. Included in the assessment is a literature-based evaluation of sand and gravel that utilizes third party geologic information. The USGS has developed a method based on existing 1:500,000 scale geologic maps supplemented by remote sensing, statistical models, and point data such as test hole or pit records. The method defines the areal extent, quality, and quantity of aggregate.

The Bulagidun copper-gold system occurs in Tertiary andesitic volcanic rocks. It is located (figure 1, from Curless, 1991) ca. two days walk from the coast in an isolated area on the northerly slope of the main range of mountains, in steep terrain dissected by erosion. Detailed and district-scale exploration from 1988 to 1991 by BHP Minerals defined a small, sub-economic resource of gold and copper. One preliminary estimate of the resource in bedrock suggests 14.4 million tons at 0.68 grams / Tonne Au and 0.61% Cu, in multiple small bodies.

Two types of hydrothermal massive sulfide fields were discovered in the Mid-Atlantic ridge (MAR) in the last twenty years. The first type associates with basalts and includes the TAG, Snakepit, Broken Spur, Lucky Strike and Krasnov hydrothermal fields. The second type is related to ultramafic rocks and represented by the Logatchev, Rainbow and Ashadze hydrothermal fields. In 2007 a new, probably, the largest cluster of hydrothermal massive sulfide field on the MAR (Fig. 1), related both to basaltic and ultramafic rocks, was discovered at 13°31'N of the MAR (Beltenev et al., 2007). The Bureau conducted, through joint funding with the Colorado Mining Association, large scale oil shale rubble fire tests to investigate flotability characteristics and different methods of extinguishment. Ignition of large rubble piles was easily accomplished. Foam blankets could be used to control surface flames. The results of these large scale tests confirmed that water was effective in extinguishing deep seated oil shale fires but not particularly efficient. It took up to 1.7 times as much water to extinguish a fire as anticipated on the basis of a simple cooling model, assuming 100 pet utilization.

Neves Corvo Mine employs four mining and four backfill methods, including paste fill. The paper shows how the strength requirement for backfill in primary stopes was calculated and the relationship between laboratory strength and in situ strength requirement. The liquefaction of paste in secondary stopes is discussed with methods to determine the liquefaction potential. It was found from laboratory tests and the preliminary results of the underground trial, that the liquefaction potential of the paste is low at 2% and is high at 0.5% cement. The results to date are inconclusive regarding 1% cement.

The Cave-In-Rock Flourspar District is located in the northeast part of Hardin County, Illinois and is the most northeasterly occurrence of flour spar of the Illinois-Kentucky Flour spar Area. The occurrence of these deposits is confined to an area about one and one-half miles wide and five miles long parallel to the Peters Creek Fault (Fig. 1) The delineation of several features that may be described as breccia pipes has permitted the definition of the point of ascent of solutions to the host horizon and the lateral spread from these points.

The paper presents models of auxiliary ventilation systems with leaky ducts and algorithms for calculations of pressure loss, air leakage, and volume flow ratio and pressure fans. Two basic models are discussed: 1st model for a duct with leakage through the flange joints; 2nd model for a duct with an equivalent longitudinal aperture. The present analytical system has been successfully applied to developing of computer software named DAVentS. A. sample problem is used to illustrate efficiency and accuracy of DAVents software in solving most common problems in process of designing AVS.

Copper ore from the Rakha Copper Concentrator (India) was successfully floated using LIX-65 NS as the collector. The beneficial role of this reagent was clearly demonstrated in hatch-flotation tests. From a feed containing around 1% Cu, it was possible in a single-stage flotation to obtain a 23.7% Cu concentrate with a recovery of more than 90%. The plant now uses rougher, scavenger and a two-stage cleaning process. The tests demonstrated that LIX-65 NS is superior to conventional xanthate for the recovery of copper from the Rakha ore.

The major development in the evolution of the conventional subaeration flotation machine has been the steady increase in the size of the individual units. In 1950, large machines were of 1.35 m3 (48 ft3) volume capacity. In 1989 the largest volume capacity operating is 85 m3 (3,000 ft3 ) These improvements have enabled the mining industry to operate successfully in the face of declining ore grades and adverse metal prices. This paper describes the design features and performance characteristics of a number of significant flotation machine designs.

The pressure pre-oxidation of refractory gold concentrate from the Golden Mile has been investigated and the conditions of temperature, oxygen pressure and percent sulphide breakdown for maximum gold extraction optimised. Both tellurides and sulphides were oxidised under optimal conditions and deposited in the residue as oxides along with haematite. Under non- optimal conditions, a reactive basic ferric sulphate was formed instead on the unreactive haematite. Maximum gold recovery after cyanidation (tail < 1 ppm) is well in excess of that produced by the present roasting process (tail 3-4 ppm).

CLAYS CONTAIN the mineral kaolinite, a hydrated aluminum silicate. It is an important potential raw material for aluminum, especially for those countries possessing no bauxite deposits. Therefore, there is no surprise to find a large volume of research done for the recovery of aluminum from clays. Kaolinite (Al203?2 SiO2?H20) contains 39.8% A1203; 46.3 % SiO2, and 12.9 % H2O. The analysis of a good-quality dried clay of an Eastern Canadian siliceous shale is shown in Table 8-1.

Dangerously high stress areas can be controlled by proper mine planning and/or destressing. This paper reviews practical methods to detect and destress high-stress zones along coal faces. The US Bureau of Mines investigated stress-related burst problems and destressing efforts at a cooperating mine. Laboratory tests of the drilling yield method for high stress detection were conducted to determine the correlation between the volume of cuttings obtained and the magnitude of the applied stress. A three- dimemiom1 computer modeling program was used to evaluate the effectiveness of stress relief methods.

The Golden Sunlight Underground Mine located near Whitehall, Montana was portalled from the bottom of the existing Golden Sunlight Pit in July 2002. Gold was mined by sublevel stoping in the larger ore zones and longhole back stoping in the narrower ore zones. The stopes varied from 30 feet to 100 feet in width, extended up to 200 feet in height, and were completely unsupported. Underground production averaged 1,500 tons per day with a staff of35 people. The mine operated with a break-even cut-off grade of0.080 ounces per ton.
