It has been demonstrated for two totally different silver bearing and cyanide refactory concentrates that the formation of silver jarosite can be prevented through the addition of iodide to the autoclave feed. A molar ratio of r/ Ag+ of no more than 1 was sufficient to raise silver extractions in a subsequent cyanide leach from 4% after autoclaving without iodide addition to 98% for the sulpho-salt concentrate and from 15% to 97% for the pyritic acanthite concentrate. Flowsheet proposals will be discussed to prevent loss of the iodide additive. The use of chloride instead of iodide will also be reviewed.

Refractory, sulfidic gold ore from the Metates deposit in Mexico was tested to determine if it could be heap biooxidized to improve gold extraction. Small column tests were conducted in a manner consistent with anticipated process conditions: increased tempera­ture due to oxidation of the high sulfide content ofMetates ore and full recycle application of leach solutions containing high concen­trations of dissolved solids. Biooxidation by thermophilic (heat­loving) microorganisms was tested to determine: 1. the extent of sulfide oxidation and bottle roll precious metal recovery, 2. reagent consumption, and 3. potential solution flow problems due to mineral precipitation.

This paper describes drill and blast excavation and groundwater control measures at the Lake Mead Intake No. 2 project. The construction includes a deep access shaft, intake shaft, surge chamber, forebay chamber, intake tunnel, 22 well shafts and East Tunnel. Grouting ahead of the excavation face was used extensively during shaft and tunnel construction. Lake Mead Intake No. 1 was constructed in the early 1970’s under less severe groundwater conditions and this work was delayed by ground conditions and water control problems. Excavations for Lake Mead Intake No. 2 must be completed in 23 months to meet SNWA’s water delivery schedule.

The breakage parameters of phosphate ore were determined by batch first-order grinding studies in a laboratory ball mill according to the procedures described in the text by Austin, Klimpel and Luckie, using a slurry density of 70 weight percent. The results were scaled to five larger mills of 0.56 m diameter by 0.91 m length (2 ft. by 3 ft.), 0.82 m by 1.52 m (3 ft. by 5 ft.), 3.36 m by 7.90 m (11.5 ft. by 25 ft.), 4.41 m by 9.10 m (14.5 ft. by 30 ft.), and 5 m by 11.1 m (17 ft. by 36 ft.), assuming equilibrium ball charges for the full-scale mills. The results were used to predict product size distribustions and capacities for batch grinding in the 0.56 m and 0.82 m diameter mills and open circuit grinding in the 0.82 m diameter and larger mills using a one-large/two-small reactors in series model fitted to the residence time distribution measured in the 4.41 m diameter mill. The simulated results were compared to plant data for ranges of mill capacities. It was found that the simulated product size distributions were in good agreement with the experimental values below the 70% passing sizes, but did not agree so well in the top sizes. The predicted capacities were in approximate agreement with experimental values for the pilot-scale mills, were about 7 percent too high for the 3.36 m and 4.41 m diameter mills and about 25 percent high for the 5 m diameter mill. Use of the Bond method with the measured Work Index of the phosphate ore gave capacity predictions that were 45 to 150 percent too high.

The Howe Coal Company located in Leflore County, Oklahoma is mining the Oklahoma Lower Hartshorne Coal bed which ranges in thickness from 38" to 42" and dips approximately 7 degrees to the Northeast. The Lower Hartshorne bed lies within the Hartshorne sandstone in Oklahoma but is as much as 60 feet above this sandstone formation in Arkansas. This coal bed extends throughout the Arkansas Oklahoma coal basin, which is about 50 miles wide and 180 miles long and progresses from a semi anthracite in Arkansas to a low-volatile coal in the eastern part of the Oklahoma to a high-volatile coal in the western area. The Howe Mine #1 in the eastern area is mining a low-volatile bituminous coal which has been used as metallurgical coal since the early 1900's as evidence of Bee-hive coke ovens still remain near the town Howe, a few miles northwest of the mine site. The Howe Mine is the first mine in the area to use modern mining equipment, however, numerous punch mines have been worked along the outcrop south of the mine site dating from 1900 with the last closing in 1965. The coal characteristics of the Lower Hartshorne rival the Pocahontas seam in chemistry and coking qualities. This paper will be concerned with the preparation of the coal for the Japanese steel market. The three man crew necessary to operate the plant are the operator, the helper, and the equipment operator needed to feed the raw coal hopper. An additional equipment operator is available on the day shift for coal loading and moving the clean coal to the storage pile as the area under the clean coal belt is only large enough for 1 shifts production. We are at present running the plant on a 2 shift per day basis.

Though sedimentary rocks comprise only about five percent of the volume of the continental crust, they cover about 80% of its surface, serve as important reservoirs for fluids, contain reserves of non-metallic minerals, and have in general been extensively drilled. However, most drilling has been shallow in comparison to the thickness of the crust and such deep drilling as has taken place is very strongly localized in sedimentary basins. This may be seen by reference to Figures 1 and 2 which show the location of wells that drilled deeper than 15,000' [=] 4.6 km. (Figure 1) and those that drilled below 20,000' [=] 6.15 km. (Figure 2). It is apparent that, even in regions of sedimentary cover, direct exploration below six kilometers has been very restricted. In the case of the metamorphic and igneous rocks which make up 95% of the volume of the crust, direct exploration has been much less extensive in terms of both area and depth. The present state of our knowledge of the crust below a' thin surface layer stands in marked contrast to our growing present need for raw materials and the needs of future generations. It also stands in contrast to our need for enhanced, scientific knowledge of the deeper crust, its configuration, its present state, its hydrothermal systems,-its evolution, and its materials. Lessons learned in exploring the third dimension of the sea floor, the vigorous prosecution of seismic profiling, the development of testable models for hydrothermal systems and mineral deposits, the need for better understanding of heat flow, state of stress, earthquake mechanisms, and a host of other phenomena all suggest that it is time to launch a national program for scientific exploration of the crust which uses drilling to test important hypotheses developed on the basis of indirect evidence.

Sulphur deposits occur within the upper Salado and Rustler gypsum beds. The formation of a sulphur ore deposit requires large quantities of oil and /or gas, which must find a permeable pathway into the gypsum beds. The Permian beds weathered for 90 million years in an arid environment prior to the advent of a more humid climate at the beginning of the Cretaceous Period. The first Cretaceous rivers enlarged the sinkholes and caverns of the Karstified Permian terrain and deposited coarse conglomerates and sands into the subsurface gypsum beds. The resulting network of caverns and sinkholes, filled with permeable sediments, permitted the free flow of hydrocarbons through gypsum. All sinkholes and caverns infilled with Cretaceous sediments that have penetrated beds of gypsum are associated with sulphur deposits. The Castile gypsum lies directly upon the oil bearing Bell Canyon formation. Sinkholes and caverns filled with Cretaceous sediments occur in the lower Castile. Biogenic calcite and sulphur are adjacent to these sediments. However, faults assume the major role in generating the initial permeability, allowing hydrocarbons to penetrate the lower Castile gypsum. The largest faults are associated with biogenic calcite and sulphur for a distance of 250 meters up from the bottom of the Castile gypsum. It is apparent that two dynamic geological processes are generating permeability within the gypsum beds: (1) the Cretaceous sands decending with difficulty into gypsum and (2) the faults creating permeability in the lower Castile but losing energy through soft bed deformation in the overlying gypsum. Both of these sulphur ore controls are mappable, but another large sulphur deposit of the magnitude of the Culberson Sulphur Mine has yet to be discovered. The consumption of industrial minerals, like most other commodities produced from the earth, depends on the demand for the goods and services that use these materials. Minerals are not generally used directly by final consumers (table salt is a notable exception) but instead are used to either make products that are then purchased by customers, or the minerals are used to make industrial products that eventually contribute towards producing other goods and services. Therefore the demand for industrial minerals in most uses is derived from the ultimate demand for goods and services by consumers. The problem for producers of industrial minerals is that the demand for their mineral product fluctuates greatly in response to the changes in the production of goods and services over the course of the business cycle. In this respect, the producers of industrial mineral are innocent victims, subject to market fluctuations outside of their control. Because the demand for most minerals depends on the demand for the product and because minerals typically make up a minor portion of the costs of producing the product, changes in the price of the mineral often do not influence demand for it to a significant degree in the short run. This is described as a very low price elasticity of demand, as shown by the steep slope of the hypothetical demand curve in Figure 1. This demand curve shows that changing the price of the mineral does not alter the quantity demanded very much, but shifts in the demand curve will be the important determinant of the quantity of the mine.ra1 that is sold. The shifts are caused by the changing demand for the products using the mineral over the course of the business cycle.

[Full-scale laboratory experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of ventilation and water spray pressure on the potential dust capture efficiency of a ventilation system comprised of blowing ventilation and an underboon scrubber. The tests were performed for a 1.52-m (5-ft) roof height and 2.36 m-3/s (5000 cfm) blowing ventilation volume, and a 2.44-m (8-ft) roof height and 4.72 m3/s (10.000 cfm) blowing ventilation volume at three face positions of the miner. The scrubber suction rate was varied for the tests to study the effect of scrubber flow rate on capture efficiency. The airflow patterns and scrubber efficiency were determined by performing tracer gas tests. Tracer gas was released through a manifold placed in front of the rotating miner drum. The gas was sampled in a grid fashion using a real-time multi-point gas sampling system. The capture efficiency of the scrubber was evaluated based an the peak gas concentration of the gas laden air drawn through the scrubber and the amount of gas passing, through the scrubber as a fraction of the gas released at the face. The data were analyzed to yield scrubber peak concentrations, potential exposures at various operator locations and the gas removal percentage (GRP). The underboom scrubber appears to work best in the end sump position, relative to the start sump and start slab positions. The capture efficiency scrubber was higher for 2.44-m (8-ft) roof heights compared to 1.52-m (5-ft) roof heights. The data also showed that the scrubber air discharged behind the mining machine may be drawn into the face area by the action of the blowing ventilation system, resulting in recirculation.]

The topic of this paper is to demonstrate the development of mobile crushing installations from throughput capacities of 200 tons per hour, to mobile and semi-mobile large- scale crushing installations with throughput capacities of 3,500 up to 10,000 tons per hour. Basis are approximately 140 mobile and semi-mobile crushing installations which have been built since 1956 or were on order in 1987. [FIGURE 1. Total Number of Mobile or Semi-mobile Crushing Plants] Sixteen of these approximate 140 mobile and semi-mobile crushing installations have a throughput higher than 3,500 metric tons per hour. Mobile crushers were developed more than 25 years ago in Europe for the quarry industry, which had special requirements - fairly low capacity, mostly softer and less abrasive material (limestone) and full mobility. So the majority of the units up to about 1980 were fully mobile, having a fairly small capacity and utilizing mainly hammermills, double roll and impact crushers. It was only when the mining industry and large quarries picked up the concept in the early 1980's that a drastic increase in capacity took place. Even though the first mobile crusher in a true mining application went into service in 1971, it took another 10 years before it proceeded in a larger scale. This trend was obviously supported by the drastic fuel price and energy cost increase in the mid 70's. Since the cost of conveying material is substantially cheaper than trucking it, the increase in energy cost, combined with increasing haulage distances provided a strong incentive. Figure 1 shows clearly the throughput distribution of all crushing installations and it also shows the sharp increase in the throughput capacities within the last few years.

The mining value chain plays an important role in our societal development. Even in a circular economy, mining and raw materials are in great demand, and so are skilled engineers. In Germany, many students decide to pursue STEM studies in the tertiary degree. Nevertheless, the OECD reports low completion rates in obtaining the degree of studies [1]. Generally, the dropout rates in STEM education are high [2]. Many students have difficulties with basic subjects such as science and mathematics, in which they lack knowledge they should have acquired in school [2]. With the German STE(A)M project PepperMINT (https://peppermint.thga.de/), the Technische Hochschule Georg Agricola (THGA) offers a digital and open educational platform, as a dynamic, massive open, online course (MOOC) for students and prospective engineers. The project is funded by the RAG-Stiftung (RAG-Foundation; No. 20-0004). Using adaptable MOOC classes and applied examples from the wide-ranging cycle of mining activities, we motivate students to engage in STEM studies. Our adaptive and application-oriented content demonstrates the diversity of jobs and career paths in the mining industry. The integrations of applied examples and research activities of the Technische Hochschule Georg Agricola can increase the curiosity and motivation of learners. In mathematics, mine-surveiying technologies and geomonitoring methods (see figure 1) can be used to teach trigonometry. Additionally the concept of the free open online classes enables students in high school to get insights into the field of engineering before they decide the subject of their studies. For freshmen who already decided to pursue a STEM degree, the PepperMINT courses can help to identify and close knowledge gaps and to align different levels of knowledge within a heterogeneous student body. Empowering students in STEM education and integrating examples from mining research can help us train the mining engineers of the future.

Three rock fracture parameters define three points along empirical cumulative size (of rock fragments) distribution curves at Inspiration copper mine. These parameters are: rock quality designation (RQD), longest piece of intact rock and % of +1 inch. The RQD and the longest piece are actually measured on drill hole cores whereas % of +1 inch is visually estimated on the same cores. These size distribution curves are then utilized in a variety of engineering applications such as; slope instability analysis, blast design, copper recovery prediction from heap leaching, etc. The three rock fracture parameters for two dominant rock types (porphyry and schist) in the pit had to be estimated separately due to different rock fracture characteristics.' Both ordinary kriging (OK) with measured hard data only and soft kriging (SFTK) with hard and soft data were used to estimate each parameter. The cross validation of 100 measured sample values served as the-basis for evaluating the potential benefits of SFTK over OK. Use of subjective information during SFTK required obtaining (prior) probability distributions for all three rock fracture parameters. These distributions were obtained from the typical rock fracture parameters observed in drill hole cores falling inside the geologically interpreted structural domains with varying degrees. of fracture intensity and also through direct mapping along the exposed bench faces. Two different types of soft information were developed for this study; namely, Type "A" and Type "K". The former is based on sample distribution of fracture parameters whereas the latter is based on two step estimation designed to narrow the range of variation observed in data Type "A". The results of the cross validation were analyzed using a linear regression of actual values versus estimated values. The results confirm an improvement on the estimates made by SFTK with hard and. both types of soft data over those produced by OK with hard data only.

Ventilation and refrigeration strategies for the 3000/3500 orebodies, Mount Isa Mines, Australia were reviewed. The orebodies lie between 1,200 and 1,800 m below surface and are characterised by steep geothermal gradients, intensively mechanised stoping methods and high ambient air temperatures in summer. Providing acceptable working conditions under these situations is difficult and costly. The ventilation air quantity required in the 3000/3500 orebodies exceeds 550 m3/s when the production rate is greater than 2.5 million tonnes per year. The maximum quantity that can be supplied and exhausted using the existing intake and return ventilation system is estimated at about 630 m3/s. For production rates greater than 3 million tonnes per year, either new intake and return airways will need to be developed or innovative approaches such as controlled partial recirculation used. A description is given of technical and economic investigations conducted at Mount Isa into controlled partial recirculation. During these investigations, a major field trial of a controlled partial recirculation system was undertaken with results indicating that an acceptable working environment can be achieved practically and economically utilising this approach. The cost involved in controlled partial recirculation for supplying the required ventilation quantity when the production of 3000/3500 orebodies exceeds 3 million tonnes per year is examined. A cost comparison between recirculation and other conventional alternatives such as new surface shaft or underground booster fans is included. The results indicate that the option of a new surface shaft will incur a high initial capital cost and moderate annual operating costs. The alternative of underground booster fans will necessitate a moderate capital cost and very high operating costs. Controlled partial recirculation, in this case, offers both the lowest capital and operating costs of the three options evaluated.

"1. INTRODUCTION Nowadays, many cities around the world have constructed metro tunnels to alleviate transportation pressure from rapid urbanization. In soft soil areas, metro tunnels are usually constructed by shield-tunneling method due to its high efficiency and little disturbance to environment. However, the tunnels may show significant post-construction settlement after several years of operation. Take Shanghai Metro line 2 for example, the maximum longitudinal settlement reached 160mm after ten years of operation, shown in Figure 1. When analyzing varying factors that contribute to the long-term settlement of tunnels, the effect of cyclic loading from train vibration is rarely taken into consideration for most researches only focus on the influence of leakage problems in the tunnel while neglecting train vibration induced leakage and resulting settlement. It’s true that metro tunnels from shield-tunneling method are prone to have leakage problems due to the special structural configuration. Furthermore, trains move hundreds of times inside the tunnel every day, which inevitably will cause accumulation and dissipation of excess pore pressure. When the excess pore pressure dissipates, tunnel settlement induced by train vibration occurs(Deng F H, 2007). Although researchers (Zheng et al., 2005; Wongsaroj et al., 2007; Mair, 2008; Shin et al., 2012; Zhang et al., 2012, 2015) conducted extensive numerical analysis on the relationship between tunnel settlement and relative permeability of tunnel to surrounding soil by treating tunnels as permeable media, their attention was only paid to the tunnel settlement from reduction of hydrostatic pressure in the ground, rather than from the dissipation of excess pore pressure generated by train vibration. Therefore, the influence of train vibration on the long-term settlements of metro tunnels is still not clear."

Major societal and industry changes over the last four decades have influenced the management of technology in the minerals industry. From the authors' experiences in both private and public sector R&D, the paper analyzes the range of strategic and structural changes and provides examples of some key technology delivery responses. For those charged with managing technology, the two key challenges facing them over the next decade are (I) moving technology development from a cost focus to a value focus (that is, from "how much long-term research can we afford?" to "identifying and capturing the value created from R&D”) and (2) the recruitment and retention of key talent. THE NEED TO ADAPT "Change is slow and gradual. It requires hard work, a bit of luck, a fair amount of self- sacrifice, and a lot of patience (Greene 1998)." Since the 1960s the world has changed and the minerals industry has had to adapt to the changing circumstances. In the '60s, minerals were there to be discovered and fortunes to be made; in Australia, the World War I1 embargo on exporting iron ore was lifted and the Western Australian iron-ore boom commenced, to be followed by the exploitation of the Darling Range bauxites; copper, lead, zinc and nickel were discovered and mines developed. The Australian dollar was worth US$1.11 whereas today it is around US$0.65. The oil crisis of 1976 sharpened focus on the sensitivity of the minerals industry on energy costs. The mechanization of the materials management function must contribute to the overall goal of optimization of profits. A computerized system contributes to the profitability of the company by saving more than it costs to operate. Design and implementation of the sys- tem must respond to the needs of users, the operating environment of the property, and must support the objectives of materials management. Three basic functions interact within the scope of materials management. They are inventory control, purchasing, and warehousing which have the following objectives: 1) Inventory control-to request materials in a timely manner and in quantities that provide the best level of support to users at the lowest cost. 2) Purchasing-to purchase requested materials and services at the required time and at the lowest cost. 3) Warehousing-to efficiently receive, store, and issue materials and to prepare accurate transaction documents for the activities. The development of the mechanized materials management system will require a plan and objective analysis by management and system users of system requirements. A typical plan would include: 1) System Design Objectives-the development of objectives that support mechanization of the materials management function. 2) System Characteristics and Concepts- the development of key system concepts and characteristics, which identify the needs of materials management. 3) System Inventory Item Classification- development and assignment of inventory category codes to inventory items. 4) System Order Decision Rules-the development of decision rules and forecasting techniques to minimize the inventory investment and to provide acceptable support levels. 5) System Report Structure-the development of a report structure to support the goals and objectives of materials management. 6) System Report Design-the development and design of reports for effective utilization of the mechanized system.

Underclays are associated with coals found in eastern Oklahoma. These coals are of bituminous rank and are in beds of Middle and Late Pennsylvanian age. They occur in an area of about 8,000 mi2, within the southern part of the Western Interior Coal Region. The rocks of the area consist of a thick series of sandstones, shales, underclays, coals, and limestones. There are more than 40 beds of bituminous coal in the state, but only 12 of these have been mined over large areas. The 12 are, from oldest to youngest: the lower Hartshorne, upper Hartshorne, McAlester (Stigler), upper McAlester, Cavanal, Rowe, Secor, Weir-Pittsburg, Mineral, Croweburg, Iron Post, and Dawson coals. None of the underclay associated with these coal beds is known to have been exploited commercially. Nine samples of underclay from beneath the Croweburg coal were collected over a wide area in the eastern Oklahoma coal field for evaluation. The underclays are usually shades of gray with brown or orange iron-oxide staining. Although soft and plastic in some places, they are generally hard and slickensided, and contain abundant carbonized plant fragments. Bulk chemical analyses, clay mineral identification, and ceramic tests were performed on each underclay sample. The dominant clay minerals are illite and kaolinite with some mixed-layer clays. Silica (Si02) ranges from 45.96% to 59.03% and alumina (Al2O3) varies from 14.98% to 23.60%. The U.S. Bureau of Mines Tuscaloosa Re- search Center conducted the ceramic evaluations. Samples were slow fired from 1,000°C to 1,250°C in 50°C intervals. Bulk density, color, percent linear shrinkage, and percent absorption were determined for each slow fire test. All Croweburg underclay samples are best suited for building brick.

The Galore Creek copper deposits lie in the Stikine River district of northwest British Columbia, a largely undeveloped region which possesses rugged mountain terrain with deeply incised valleys which support dense undergrowth. Timberline is normally at about 1300 m (4265 ft) and the higher levels contain glacial systems and large ice fields with peaks rising to 3500 m (I 1,483 ft). A location map of the Galore Creek area is given in Fig. 1. In the late 1920s, field parties under the direction of F.A. Kerr (1948) of the Geological Survey of Canada completed geological surveys of the district. Primary access for this work was provided by riverboats on the Stikine and Iskut Rivers. Kerr's party had to contend with extremely difficult travel conditions that required considerable backpacking, augmented by pack dogs in certain cases. Absence of ground control led Kerr to establish his own topographic maps. Among the geological data established was the recognition [ ] that small bodies of orthoclase porphyry in the district are often well mineralized with base metal sulfides. Copper mineralization in the upper Galore Creek valley, a tributary of Scud River which flows into the Stikine River some 80 km (50 miles) south of the small settlement of Telegraph Creek, was originally discovered during aerial reconnaissance by M. Morrison and W. Buckholz while prospecting for Hudson Bay Exploration and Development Co. Ltd. in 1955. Malachite- and azurite-stained out- crops in several parts of the Galore Creek watershed are clearly visible from distances of 500 m ( 1640 ft) or more. Claims were staked in 1956 and the copper showings were partly mapped, trenched, and investigated by shallow diamond drilling. Because of the remoteness of the area and higher priorities for expenditures elsewhere, no further work was undertaken and most of the claims were allowed to expire.

INTRODUCTION The term, chelate, from the Greek for 'claw,' has its origin in the pincer-like representation of more than one atom of a single ligand bonded to the same metal atom, forming a ring-like structure. Depending on how many attachments exist on the sphere of coordination around the metal ion, ligands are referred to as bidentate, tridentate, tetradentate, pentadentate and hexadentate According to Calvin and Martell (1952) and Somasundaran and Nagaraj (1984), chelating agents must contain suitable functional groups, and their location within the ligand molecule must enable ring formation that is sterically possible. Typical structures that meet these requirements have been given by Fuerstenau and Herrera-Urbina (1988) and are listed in Figure 1. As noted, the functional groups of these reagents contain electron donor atoms such as oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur. Basic groups, such as amino (-NH,), are those that contain an atom with a lone pair of electrons. Acid groups are those, such as carboxylic (-COOH) which lose a hydrogen ion and coordinate with the metal atom. Examples of each of these types chelating reagents are given in Tables 1-4. The specificity of chelating agents for various metal ions has long been known and was utilized early in the search for new flotation collectors. In 1927, Vivian used ammonium nitrosophenylhydroxylamine as a collector for cassiterite. Holman (1929) tested dimethylglyoxime as a collector for nickel oxide. He also suggested taurin as a collector for oxidized lead ores. DeWitt and von Batchelder (1939) suggested the use of oximes as flotation collectors. Gutzeit (1946) conducted an extensive investigation on the use of chelating agents as collectors and as depressants for gangue minerals.
