Creating technology, securing patent rights, and managing a patent portfolio are time-sensitive and dynamic activities. Agreements should be in place with technology partners (employees, contractors, joint venture partners), prior to embarking on research and development projects, so as to mitigate future disputes over patent rights. Technology partners should be educated on patent law basics so as to be mindful of patent bar triggering events. Accurate records must be maintained to capture information relevant for preparation and filing of patent application, including subject matter, names of inventors, and invention date. Developed inventions should be evaluated for whether to file for patent protection, delay patenting until technology is further developed, maintain trade secrecy, or effect deliberate public disclosure. Once decision is made to file for patent protection, time is of the essence, and application for patent protection should be filed as soon as possible, as many countries award patents on a "first-to file" basis. Decisions on where to file are made having regard to potential competitive advantages versus cost considerations, and can be delayed by taking advantage of priority rights recognized in patent legislation of most countries. Once patents are granted, competitors must be policed for potential patent infringement, and legal action may be necessary to prevent patent infringement.

The great potential of Brazil for the agricultural production makes our country a generator of agro industrial residues. In this context, the solid-state fermentation appears as a technology that shows alternative ways for those residues, adding values to these raw materials, through the production of substances of industrial interest, besides reducing the possible environmental problems. The main objective of this study was to apply the bovine fat residue associated to the garden grass for the fungal lipase production. Initially, 75 microbial cultures were isolated from garden grass samples after incubation of the mixture with bovine fat. From these cultures were selected the filamentous fungi, whose lipase production abilities were evaluated. The isolation and the selection were accomplished by using a differential culture medium containing Tween 80 as inducer substrate of lipase production. The colonies with lipolytic potential were detected by the presence of white precipitation haloes on the agar. With agro industrial residues the best lipase producer fungus was identified as Penicillium sp in 6 days of solid state fermentation. The crude enzyme obtained was tested in transesterification process for the biodiesel production.

What might an ideal leach-to-cathode/product system look like in the next century? The paper looks at the synergies of the 60's and 70's that led to the highly effective copper leach SX-EW system of the 90's. Standing in the year 2020 focuses on what breakthrough technologies might make possible a next generation leach/extraction/metal recovery system. Many of the pieces of such a technology have been developed, even piloted: in situ leaching, enhanced bioleaching, heap leaching of fine particles, resin in pulp, ion exchange, alternate anode reaction electrowinning, novel anode coatings. With nearly non-existent research on the part of individual large companies, the greatest challenge may not be inventing the technologies but rather inventing an industry "will to create."

The effects of alkali metal ions Li+, Na+, K+and transition metal ions Cr3+ and Mo6+ on the cathodic current efficiency, deposit quality, crystallographic orientations, deposit morphology and polarisation behaviour of the cathode during nickel electrocrystallisation on stainless steel substrate from aqueous sulphate solutions containing boric acid were investigated. The alkali metal ions had virtually no effect on the cathodic current efficiency, deposit quality, crystallographic orientations, deposit morphology and cathodic polarisation. On the other hand, there were significant variations in the current efficiency and deposit characteristics when Cr3+or Mo6+ were present in the electrolyte. Current efficiency decreased by more than 10% even at lower concentrations (> 100 mg/L). Similarly purity of the deposits was affected by the presence of either of the metal ions. In the presence of Cr3+, there was progressive shifting of the nucleation potential of nickel towards more negative values, whereas, in the case of Mo6+the nucleation potential shifted initially towards positive values in the concentration range 2-40 mg/L, but then towards negative values when its concentration exceeded 40 mg/L.

Falconbridge Limited operates a smelter in Sudbury, consisting of fluid bed roasters, acid plant, electric furnaces and Peirce-Smith converters, to treat local concentrate and other custom materials. The products are a low iron, nickel- copper-cobalt matte and sulphuric acid. This paper describes the operation and highlights some of the recent efforts to improve human resource effectiveness, to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions and ground level concentration excursions, to develop and expand the custom feed business, to improve productivity and performance in safety and hygiene, and to improve furnace integrity and process control.

Mineral processing plants typically procure a range of industrial services from contractors. Their satisfaction and value received is directly affected by how the services are procured, rationalized and delivered. Conventional purchasing strategies often focus on price rather than on optimizing the service relationship between supplier and customer. The nature of this relationship may have the greatest potential to reduce costs and enhance production. It has been documented that a service involves simultaneous production and consumption. A high degree of customer involvement is often necessary for a successful outcome and the expectations and attitudes of the customer can positively or negatively affect delivery of the service. This indicates that the customer can enhance or diminish their own satisfaction and value received and the supplier cannot act alone for best results. The Optimax? Program for industrial services is a service delivery framework whereby a customer and supplier work together to raise the efficiency of the service exchange. The Optimax? Program is intended to help the customer optimize costs and maximize production by connecting the customer and supplier through shared information and objectives. This paper will review the basic nature of services, provide a couple of examples of conventional procurement strategies for services and outline the features of the Optimax? Program. A Case Study showing recent results from implementing the Optimax? Program will be included.

PT. Smelting Co. was established in February, 1996 to construct and operate the Gresik Smelter and Refinery. The construction work of first Copper Smelter and Refinery in Indonesia was completed in the end of August, 1998 and it was put into the integrated test operation in December, 1998. Gresik Smelter and Refinery is designed to produce 200,000 tpy of copper cathode from copper concentrate supplied from Grasberg Mine of PT. Freeport Indonesia Company in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. As by product 592,000 tpy of sulfuric acid, 382,000 tpy of slag, 31,000 tpy of gypsum and 480 tpy of slime will be produced in the full operation. The insufficient scientific and technical level of a number of operations in the nonferrous metals industry encourages development of new processes and equipment, including smelting in liquid bath, flame-type sparged smelting unit for combined processes, electrothermal process with the use of alternating current (PDF furnace), electrothermal processing of complex raw materials and intermediate products at nonferrous metallurgical plants, etc. One of the most important aspects for development of new processes and equipment in the Gintsvetmet Institute is their environmental safety. Special attention is paid to environmental protection measures, which is also of important economic and social significance. This refers also to a complete extent to processing of reserves of man-made raw materials and wastes available at the existing operations with the use of innovative techniques ensuring not only resource conservation and environmental protection, but also abatement of negative impact on the nature due to accumulated industrial and domestic waste, reclamation of the land used for waste disposal and recycling of nonferrous metals. Technologies and equipment developed in the Gintsvetmet Institute and based on electrothermal processes determine the prospects for ensuring more integrated usage of ores and man-made raw materials.

"The harsh environment of the Carbothermic Aluminum process makes necessary numerical modeling as a means of process visualization and understanding. A brief survey of the various numerical models, with emphasis on CFD, applied in the development of the process is presented.IntroductionThe environment of the Alcoa Carbothermic reactor is necessarily a harsh one, with temperatures approaching 2100 °C and plenty of reactive dust and vapors. As such, it is difficult to directly observe what is actually taking place. Thermocouples can last for a few minutes but are eventually destroyed. The openings to optical pyrometers become occluded with dust and condensation. Graphite sheathing embrittles, reacts away or becomes clogged with condensate. Dip-samples on steel rods are routinely taken, but their interpretation is often unclear.Those measurements that can be reliably taken are invaluable, but often do not provide a complete picture. Therefore from the very inception of the project both physical and computer based models have played an important role. Modeling provides an intuitive understanding of the processes that might be taking place and in very many cases approach quantitative prediction. I will briefly touch upon computer-based modeling performed at Alcoa over 12 years of the Carbothermic project, with special emphasis on CFD. The explanation of physical models is perhaps best left for those with the greatest familiarity with them"

"PET bottles are separated and subsequently crushed into flakes. Except for PET, these flakes contain PE, PVC, paper, adhesives, beverages remainders and mineral impurities. PET itself usually is a glycol and terephthalic and isophthalic acid polymer.The suggested method consists in PET flakes crystallization at 255°C. In the meantime, volatile substances evaporate and PVC disintegrates. Formed crystalline PET is crushed into small particles and then is subject to the basic hydrolysis at an atmospheric pressure. In addition to lye solution, glycol is added in the hydrolysis. Water is eliminated by boiling, which gives rise to suspension of sodium salt of terephthalic acid and glycol. The suspension is skimmed and the filtered glycol is vacuum distilled. Pure glycol is then the distillation product.Crystals are dissolved in water and the solution is filtered, which eliminates PE and impurities. Electrodialysis removes pure terephthalic acid salt from the solution. Glycol solution is returned to the hydrolysis. Terephthalic acid is precipitated by a mineral acid. Subsequently, it is washed and dried. The filtrate is separated through electrodialysis to lye and acid. The lye gets back to the hydrolysis and the acid is used for precipitation. Terephthalic acid and glycol are products in a “polymer grade” quality. The waste is a part of washing waters, distillation residues after glycol regeneration and a filter cake after the terephthalate solution filtration."

The leaching of metal nickel in copper sulfate solutions is investigated. It is established, that irre-spective of presence or absence of chloride-ion and oxidizer (oxygen) in system process can be divided into three stages, characterizing by restoration and oxidation of metals with formation of metal copper and cuprite and differing in the speeds of sedimentation of copper and transition of nickel into solution. At the initial stage of process along with allocation of metal copper it is be-sieged cuprite, that results in excess of speed of sedimentation of copper in comparison with dis-solution of nickel. At the second stage speed of transition of nickel into solution falls practically to zero, and sedimentation of copper proceeds on reaction of interaction of metal copper with copper sulfate solutions with cuprite formation. During the final period speed of transition of nickel into solution exceeds speed of sedimentation of copper due to course of reaction of resto-ration of cuprite up to metal. Influence of an ion of chloride and oxidizer on formation of various phases is revealed. It is established, that presence of an oxidizer results in increase in a share of cuprite in a deposit. With increase of the maintenance of chloride-ion speed of metal copper allo-cation essentially grows even at presence of an oxidizer in system.

There are many experimental works on the investigation of temperature effect on the conductivity of polymers filled by carbon materials. However frequently the establishment of current nature in the polymer heterogeneous systems becomes difficult. This fact is explained by complexity of calculation of different physical or chemical phenomena passing in materials at variation of the temperature. Among these phenomena it must be noted some morphological changes in the structure of polymers. These changes reflex on the structure of conductive system of composites. So, it has been shown, that the character of temperature dependence of thermal noises level and conductivity of some polymers filled by carbon black essentially depend on some relaxation transition in the polymeric matrix. In this paper the effect of difference transitions in polymer matrix of filled by carbon black some polymers and rubbers have been investigated in a wide temperature range. The importance of such investigation is due to possibility of application of resistive temperature sensors based on conductive polymeric composites (CPC) to measuring technology. The experiments have been carried out in the cavity with regulation of temperature in the range 110-650K. The resistance of samples was measured by four electrodes method. The samples were obtained by hot pressing of dry mixture of powdered components at chosen temperatures, pressures and cooling time in the case of plastics and by peroxide vulcanization of the elastomers in the case of the rubbers. The samples were produced on the basis of the following thermoplastics: low density polyethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, polycarbonate and polydimethylmethylvinilsiloxane.

The earliest record of slag in the world was the discovery of the remains of a copper blast furnace in Southern Israel, which has been carbon dated at 3500BC, nearly 6,000 years ago. Slag in Australia is a much more recent phenonenum with the first iron blast furnace commencing operations in 1848. The early days of metal smelting in Australia were marked with many company failures due to a variety of reasons. This paper traces the progress of metal and slag production from those early days up to the present times

A thermodynamic model for predicting the distribution coefficients has been developed by taking into account the extraction mech-.ism and the chloride complexation when Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy and Ho for single component systems are extracted from acidic chloride solutions by di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid and 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester in kerosene, respectively. The model equation includes two constants, of which one corresponds to the apparent extraction equilibrium constant and the other is due to the variation of the activity coefficients of organic species. These values are determined from a few experimental data by the curve fitting method Then, the distribution coefficients under untried conditions have been predicted from only the initial data by iterative calculations. Bromley's formulation is used to estimate the activity coefficients of aqueous species and the interaction parameters for some rare earth chlorides are reported in terms of molality and molarity using data from Spedding et al. The validity of this method has been confirmed by excellent agreement between the experimental and the predicted distribution coefficients.

The MTDATA computer software package consists of a rigorous implementation of an algorithm for calculating chemical phase equilibria by the technique of Gibbs free energy minimization and a database of the thermochemical properties of common materials, such as slags, mattes, metals, gases and aqueous solutions. We have used MTDATA to contribute to our understanding of the chemical reactions occurring in several specific unit operations of the Kennecott Utah Copper Garfield Smelter. The following two examples illustrate the range of environments to which the method is applicable. Calculation of the liquidus phase relations of the FSF fayalite and FCF calcium ferrite slags helped in the early diagnosis of several operating problems. Calculation of the deportment of fluorine between the FSF offgas and the FSG scrubber liquor helped in the identification of operating conditions under which significant hydrogen fluoride concentrations could be introduced to the contact section of the acid plant. Without the painstaking assessment of solution phase properties undertaken over many years, these calculations would not be possible.

A common international safety and health management system was developed. Analysis of selected major safety and health management systems from around the world was conducted. Functional elements of selected systems were grouped to identify common elements and key differences. Common elements were subjected to qualitative judgments of equivalency and then reconciled. With few exceptions, differing elements were revised to achieve cultural neutrality. The resulting 98 system elements were organized according to the NOSA numbering and title scheme. System summaries were produced in Spanish and English. A pre-implementation self-assessment evaluated conformance in three distinct cultures. The consensus 98 element system was internally named the BHP Copper Five Star Safety System Performance Management Guidelines. Development of a common system within an organization with international operations can enhance the ability of the staff function to share resources, programs and subsystem improvements and thereby increasingly protect workers. Common systems can increase the level of management support by demonstrating increased compatibility of the safety and health management function with traditional business objectives. Safety professionals, industrial and occupational hygienists, business managers and the safety and health of workers will benefit from further development and articulation of common systems for safety and health management.

The chemical variation of central North American lignite fly ash can be compared using the major and minor oxide analyses and the distribution pattern of the inter-grain chemistries of the individual fly ash have been used to illustrate the variations in bulk ,sample and individual grain chemistry. This information documents the chemical variability of the lignite fly ashes by geographic region. There is a direct relationship between grains rich in SiOa and AlaO, and in the NazO content of the grains in lignite derived fly ashes. There is also a direct relationship between grains rich in Ca0 and the MgO and SO, content of the grains in lignite derived fly ashes,. These variations are shown using CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 and CaO-Na2O-MgO ternary diagrams.

"In order to demonstrate how CFD can help scientists and engineers to better understand the fundamentals of engineering processes, a number of examples are shown and discussed. The paper will cover (i) special aspects of continuous casting of steel including turbulence, motion and entrapment of non-metallic inclusions, and impact of softreduction; (ii) multiple flow phenomena and multiscale aspects during casting of large ingots including flow induced columnar-toequiaxed transition and 3D formation of channel segregation; (iii) multiphase magneto hydrodynamics during electro-slag remelting; and (iv) melt flow and solidification of thin but large centrifugal castings.IntroductionSince the Bronze and the Iron Ages, material processing, and here especially metallurgy, has got a global importance for the economic well-being of the societies. It is thus understandable that metallurgy has changed from arts and crafts into an engineering specialty, where the knowledge of centuries has lead to an enormous commercial and technical efficiency. However, increasing competition and the necessitation of energy and CO2 reduced manufacturing methods requires the improvement of existing techniques and even the development of new, alternative production technologies. On the other hand, the opacity of liquid and solid materials and the involved high temperatures makes the experimental penetration of metallurgical processes and with that the attainment of detailed process knowledge quite difficult."

Characteristics of ceramic support made by spent foundry sand-loess mixtures are investigated by bulk density, porosity, durability, and compressive strength. And the basic properties of SFS and loess are estimated. The effect of drying time after cutting process, elevated temperature time, sintering temperature, and sintering time is also estimated to obtain the optimal condition in the process of manufacture ceramic supports. From the basic properties of SFS and loess, the content of SiO2 in furan sand is much higher than that in loess but the content of Al2O3and Fe2O3 in furan sand is much lower than that in loess. In order to make ceramic supports cylinder shape is the most desirable to sustain the properties of ceramic support. If annulus shape has a enough compressive strength, however, annulus shape may be decided. For the optimal condition to manufacture ceramic supports, drying time after cutting process is decided to 24 hrs and elevated temperature time is decided by 9hrs. And sintering temperature and sintering time are decided to 900 and 9hrs, respectively in order to prevent solidification of sand materials.

The shrinking core model for coarse particle leaching has been generally accepted as describing the leaching of a copper oxide or sulfide ore. However, when a mixed oxide/sulfide ore-is leached this model can not be used in its simple form because at least two and possibly three separate leaching processes are occurring simultaneously (dissolution of oxide copper minerals, secondary copper minerals and primarily copper minerals). It has been impossible to isolate their individual leaching curves from the recovery/time curve generated by the column leach test. This paper describes a tests program carried out at the Groupo Mexico, Mexicana de Cobre's La Caridad operation in which the individual recovery/time curves for the leaching of copper oxide mineral, secondary copper mineral and primary copper minerals were developed from standard column leach tests. Once the individual recovery/time curves were developed scale-up of the column leach test results to the commercial heap leaching operation is possible by using the shrinking core model.
