A characteristic feature of the macrokinetics of the interaction process is the presence of two specifically defined areas of oxidation which had a linear time dependence. The effect of variables, such as residual sulphur content of the melt, temperature and the oxidation potential of the gas phase, on the macrokinetics of oxidation are investigated. Phase composition and structure of products of solidification of partially oxidised melts and thermodynamic properties pentaining to Cu-S-O melts are used to analyze the macrokinetic behaviour and mechanisms of the interaction. The process of interaction of sulfide copper melts with oxygen may be considered as a disproportional absorption process and its mechanism is based on localized interaction on the surface and inside the melt volume. Superficial processes include also the process of primary chemisorption of oxygen by melts at place of metal-metal donor bonds proceeding with formation of oxysulfide liquid solutions and volumetric decomposition of the latter accompanied by evolution of sulfur dioxide and metallization of sulfide melts. It is the degree of dynamic balance of such interaction processes that determines specific individual features of the macro-kinetics and mechanism of oxidation of sulfide copper solutions with oxygen in the gas phase.

Porous silicon carbide (SiC) has been the top selection for diesel particular filters (DPFs) since 2000 because of its high thermal diffusivity and strong body, which help it to survive in the harsh environment of a diesel exhaust system. However, the process to produce SiC DPFs is a costly one. The work presented herein describes more cost effective composite materials for this application, namely Si-SiC and Si₃N₄-SiC. Both composites have shown excellent filtration efficiency, low back pressure and outstanding survivability of regeneration at high soot loadings. Since the composites are batched from silicon metal, they can be prepared by a low temperature process that is impossible in the production of pure SiC PDFs. In fact, fabrication of SiC composites simply involves reactions between nitrogen gas and silicon metal, or silicon metal bonded with SiC, and as such uses a much less costly process when compared to the one employed to make SiC. In addition, the pore structure of the composites can easily be tuned by selecting raw materials and changing the ratio of two components. A typical pore structure consists of well connected pores with a median pore size of 5-20 µm and a porosity of 40-55%. This talk will describe the exothermic behavior as well as the mechanical and thermal properties of SiC composites in comparison to those of SiC filters. It will also show the superior thermal shock resistance of Si₃N₄ bonded SiC which is due to the unique combination of these phases that lowers the thermal expansion and elastic modulus relative to pure SiC.

The need for a better understanding of the heap biooxidation pretreatment of pyritic refractory gold ores has prompted us to develop a rigorous mathematical model of the process. The hydrological structure of the model takes the form of lateral stagnant pores in contact with a uniformly distributed gas stream and connected to vertical plug flow channels, as suggested by the results of an independent study of column hydrology. A model of pyrite oxidation kinetics was derived based on electrochemical leaching theory and the results of potentiostatic stirred tank and column tests. The growth rates of attached and planktonic iron- and sulfur-oxidizing cells are modeled with separate Monod expressions over three separate temperature ranges corresponding to mesophiles, moderate thermophiles, and extreme thermophiles. Isothermal column tests validate the model simulations. Excellent fits of several leaching indicators (potential, extent of sulfide oxidation, iron concentration, cell numbers) reveal the rate-limiting step to shift from particle kinetics to oxygen gas/liquid mass transfer with increasing temperatures and pyrite head grades. Competition for oxygen between sulfur- and iron-oxidizing microorganisms lowers potentials and slows down pyrite oxidation. This modeling tool may assist engineers in the design and operation of heaps to give more complete gold liberation in a shorter time.

In 1981, K. E. Drexler proposed using massively parallel nanomechanical systems to manufacture large atomically exact structures. As in macroscopic mechanical systems, they would contain components that serve traditional functions such as trusses for support, gears to transmit power, bearings for low-friction support of rotating surfaces, motors to supply torque, pipes and conveyor belts for material transport, and channels for coolant. Many of these components would only contain a few thousand atoms. Specific designs for these devices became available in the early 1990s, and a few working devices appeared in laboratories by the early 2000s. As advances continue, a thorough understanding of the operative transport phenomena will guide the intelligent design and construction of nanomechanical structures, devices, and systems. The familiar equations of continuum mechanics are generally inadequate to describe the flow of heat and mass in the proposed nanosystems. Boundary conditions often need to be described in terms of potential surfaces. Surfaces are not geometrically smooth, but periodic according to the locations of atomic nuclei. Friction occurs not due to the plastic deformation of asperities on mating surfaces, but to phenomena such as thermoelastic damping and phonon viscosity when atoms slide past each other. Electrostatic forces dominate over gravitational forces by orders of magnitude; there is no role here for natural convection. Structural components, no matter how stiff and strong, are in constant motion due to the thermal noise in the system. The fluids are described in terms of individual molecules in constant motion.

There are different reasons for purging a metal bath. The operations are varied, for example the purging gas can be used as a reactive gas being part of the metallurgical process or as an inert gas using the rising gas bubbles for agitation only. The different purposes for agitation, chemical and thermal homogenization or a preferential movement of the slag to the slag skimming door have to be considered. It depends on the furnace type and its dimensions as well as the process characteristics what the focus is on. For an optimized arrangement of numbers and position of all single plugs in the furnace, mathematical modeling - the CFD Computational Fluid Dynamics method - is used. This paper shows how the operation of purging plugs can influence the metallurgical process of an anode furnace by the example of Jinchuan Copper in China. The potentials for savings in energy consumption as well as in time for oxidation and reduction are presented.

The process for desulfurizing coke oven gas in a regenerative system ?scrubber-stripper?, with sour gas being fed to Sulfur Recovery Unit (SRU) and tail gas being recycled to raw coke gas scrubber, has been developed. A key problem of this process is the presence of elemental sulfur in the SRU off-gas, which may deposit on gas-blowing equipment, thus disrupting its operation. A new treatment technology for SRU off-gas that has been worked out for a Claus unit operated by «Russian Metallurgical Company» (RMC) in Magnitogorsk (Russia) is presented. It incorporates a catalytic hydrolysis/hydrogenation stage, where all sulfur-bearing species such as sulfur dioxide, carbonyl sulfide and elemental sulfur are converted to hydrogen sulfide. The SRU in Magnitogorsk comprises three main units: gas re-heater; catalytic hydrolysis reactor and waste gas cooler. Re-heater is required to increase temperature of the process gas up to a level of catalytic conversion (beyond 330-3500C). Oxygen utilized as an oxidizing agent reduces the volume of waste gas to a minimal possible value. The operational data garnered since 16.07.2004 clearly shows that the new technology allows high-level purification of Claus tail gas from elemental sulfur. Unlike SCOT ? process, this technology does not require separate stages for H2S removal and enrichment that tangibly simplifies its implementation at lower capital and operation expenditures.

Over the past three years the Horne Smelter has successfully introduced concentrate smelting by injection in Peirce-Smith converters, allowing definitive closure of its last operating reverberatory furnace, while commissioning a large acid plant treating off gases from its Noranda reactor. Future strategies include a major revision to present converter practices to permit further significant reductions in sulphur and dust emissions. This paper gives an overview of the status of these and other technical and operating developments which will further contribute to ensuring the Horne's position as an efficient custom smelter of primary and secondary feeds.

"According to characteristics of Tm, Yb and Lu enriched oxides composition and problems in its traditional extraction separation process, the computer simulation of a optimized fuzzy extraction separation process, in which three products with high purity(>99.99%) could be obtained at same time, was carried out. Distributing Curves of every element in both organic and aqueous phases were worked out. Distribution rules of rare earth elements in every stage of the optimized extraction process were studied. The computation results of economical and technical index showed the consumption of the acid and base chemical reagents in the optimized process would be saved more than 30%.IntroductionFor the solvent extraction separation process of rare earths, countercurrent extraction process was widespread in the industrial practice. Normally, rare earth ions were extracted by the saponificated extractant and transferred into the organic phase, where the acidic extractant was saponificated by the base firstly. Then, the loaded rare earth ions were stripped from the organic phase into the aqueous phase by the acid. Therefore, the acid and the base were the main consumptions in the process, and the equilibrium acid of the stripped rare earth solution was one of the main pollution resources. Meanwhile, for the heavy rare earths, such as Tm, Yb and Lu, stripping was more difficult, and the equilibrium acidity of the stripped rare earth solution was higher, so the acid consumption increased greatly."

In 1997 Chile was the world's largest copper mine producer with around 3.4 million metric tomes of copper. Conventional technology (conminution-flotation- smelting-converting-electrorefining) for copper sulfide ores was used. For copper oxidized ores hydrometallurgical processes (heap leaching-solvent extraction- electrowinning) were employed. Consequently, the most important waste effluents include flotation tailings, gaseous emissions, smelter slags, acidic and alkaline wastewater, electrolytic sludges, solid residues from leaching, etc. The introduction of stricter environmental regulations are forcing the Chilean industry to minimise the generation of waste and promote cleaner production. Gas emissions such as SO2 and arsenic from smelters and process wastewater are the major problems at this stage. The environmental impact assessment of gas emissions in all six largest smelters namely Chuquicamata, Caletones, Potrenllos, Ventanas, Paipote and Chagres led to design a "decontamination plan." The implementation of this plan resulted in (i) the installation of sulfuric acid plants for SO2 abatement and (ii) the installation of electrostatic precipitators to remove arsenic oxides condensed from cooling gases. The aim of this paper is (i) to describe the type of waste associated to the various stages of the metallurgical processes and (ii) review the main abatement technologies used in medium and large size companies.

Despite the good years that the non-ferrous business is now enjoying, one should not forget that in this business growth rates are low, fixed assets are high and prices are more cyclical than in other businesses. Increasing environmental concern puts the industry under pressure. Lead and zinc companies are now profitable and profitability in the next ten years will depend on size of units, location, and choice between new technology and upgrading current ones. Implementation of Metaleurope was a strategic move. It produced a company of sufficient size to achieve new steps in cost cutting and yet remain flexible enough to deal with rising variety of primary and secondary raw materials.

Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd. planned an expansion program for the Toyo smelter and refinery in order to increase the production capacity of electrolytic copper to 450,000 tpy in 2007. Regarding the flash smelting furnace, a drastic increase in the average concentrate smelting capacity from 2,300 tpd to 3,950 tpd was required to achieve the plan. It was necessary to examine the performance of the Sumitomo concentrate burner when the feed rate was considerably increased. The authors developed a mathematical model to describe the combustion phenomena in the Toyo flash smelting furnace. This model was developed incorporating the fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, and chemical reactions of the copper concentrate and ancillary fuel. The copper concentrate was considered to mainly comprise chalcopyrite (CuFeS2). The reaction of CuFeS2 was assumed to consist of two steps, namely, the decomposition of CuFeS2 and the oxidation of the resulting pyrrhotite (FeS) and sulfur (S). The combustion phenomena in the furnace at the increased feed rate were predicted using this model. It was found that the Sumitomo burner was capable of enhancing the smelting capacity. This is attributed to the wide dispersion of the concentrate particles caused by an increase in the particle mass and a long residence time in the reaction shaft; this is due to the low temperature of the reaction air. However nonuniformity of the reaction in the reaction shaft was enhanced with the increased feed rate. In order to improve the nonuniformity of the reaction, an increase in oil-burner oxygen and an enlargement of the diameter of the dispersing cone were useful. By combining the expertise of the Toyo smelter staff and the calculation results, the concentrate smelting capacity of the Toyo smelter has been stably increased to 3,600 tpd thus far, and further improvements of the smelting performance are still being carried out.

"Gas-stirring ladle treatment of liquid metal has been pointed out for a long time as the processing stage mainly responsible for the inclusion population of specialty steels. A steel ladle is a complex three-phase reactor, where strongly dispersed inclusions are transported by the turbulent liquid metal / bubbles flow. We have coupled a population balance model with CFD in order to simulate the mechanisms of transport, aggregation, flotation and surface entrapment of inclusions. The simulation results, when applied to an industrial gas-stirring ladle operation, show the efficiency of this modelling approach and allow us to compare the respective roles of these mechanisms on the inclusion removal rate.IntroductionThe reduction of the weight of high performance materials together with the improvement of mechanical properties and the increase of the recycling of used metal are new challenges which emphasize the importance of metal cleanliness. Ladle treatment of specialty steels has long been described as the secondary metallurgical process mainly responsible for the non-metallic inclusion derived from the deoxidation process. The treatment is accomplished by blowing argon through one or more porous plugs for the purposes of desulphurization, minor composition adjustments, and inclusion removal. Gas injection is applied on routine basis to achieve both the stirring of the liquid bath (thermal and chemical homogenization) and the entrapment of the inclusions by the bubbles (flotation). Furthermore, the turbulence produced in bubble swarms enhances the probability of inclusion collisions and makes aggregation the first mechanism for particle removal. The physical processes involved in gas stirred ladles are numerous and complex owing to the three dimensional and multiphase (metal-gas and inclusions) nature of the reactor. Despite these difficulties, the population balance equations can be implemented in CFD code11'21 and combined CFD-PBM (computational fluid dynamics - population balance method) models are investigated for steel ladle processes13'41 and produce very promising results in terms of inclusion removal efficiency."

"The requirement for the reduction of sulphur dioxide emissions from copper smelters is becoming more and more important. Therefore, the most important question in smelting technology will be how to produce even, high strength SO2 gas in smelter and how to combine smelting and converting. The best sorution in certain cases is to eliminate converters totally.Outokumpu is already responding to this challenge. As a result of extensive research work, Outokumpu Oy has developed the Flash Smelting Process for direct smelting of blister copper from concentrates in one step.The newest process development is the Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting process, where solidified copper matte is converted into blister copper. The production of low volume high SO2 content gases, separation of smelting and converting operations to allow increased on-line availability, and simplified process control are the major benefits of the process which translates to reduced smelter capital and operating costs.Also, it has been studied the use of the same Outokumpu furnace for smelting and converting alternately when the production capacity is low.In this paper, the developments and improvements of the Outokumpu Process are described from the operation and investment cost standpoints"

Laterite projects are found in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. As a result severe meteorological situations accompany such projects, often in regions of high seismic activity and political uncertainty. Frequently, socio-economic development supported by political interest is a major driver for development, while environmental protection imposes numerous stresses on the project. This paper will review and examine the many social, environmental, technical and financial issues that a mining and extraction process is subject to during development. The options that must be evaluated will be discussed in the context of sustainable development. Issues of project standards and cultural impact through to long-term issues such as greenhouse gasses and climate change will be assessed in redirecting project environmental norms. Although a rationale for sustainable project can be developed many long- term uncertainties around issues remain. In secondary precious metals refining, the feed to the plant itself is a waste generated in manufacturing processes. Constant changes in manufacturing processes produce ever changing feed materials to the secondary PGM (platinum Group Metals) refineries. After extracting the precious metals, secondary wastes are generated. The discharge of effluent is dictated by both the PGM losses in wastes and the regulatory mandates. This paper will discuss some. of the conventional as well as some newer approaches to face both the challenges.

A laboratory process based on simple and environmental friendly operation, aimed at recycling of spent Li/MnO2 batteries, is described in this study. This process involves roasting Li/MnO2 batteries in a vacuum furnace at 650°C, followed by selective leaching Li2CO3 from calcined electrode material in distilled water at ambient temperature and controlled crystallization of pure Li2CO3.
