Froth flotation is the most widely-used method of separating fine coal, especially coal with coking properties. However, froth flotation is not efficient for treating ultrafine coal and coarse coal particles. Our previous fundamental test results demonstrated that cavitation-generated nanobubbles can significantly improve coal and phosphate flotation performance over a wide particle size range. In this study, the effect of nanobubble on the flotation performances of different particle size fractions of coal was investigated using a bank of 10-liter flotation cells, a specially designed 50 mm inside diameter column and a 152 mm inside diameter column. It was found that nanobubbles that were either directly formed on or subsequently attached to the surface of coal particles during coal froth flotation process improved flotation efficiency. The use of nanobubble in a bank of mechanical cells flotation and column flotation significantly increased the flotation recovery at a given product grade. Nanobubbles increased the flotation rate constants of different coal particle sizes. The presence of nanobubbles in flotation slurry could extend the lower and the upper particle size limits for effective coal flotation.

Variations in delay timing can have a marked influence on blasting effectiveness and, hence, on total production costs. In single-row bench blasts, delay firing is invariably more effective than simultaneous initiation. In single-row delayed blasts, there is an optimum inter-hole delay above and below which inferior blasting results are obtained. This optimum delay is equal to the time required for each charge to just effectively detach its quota of the burden. The inter-hole delay should seldom be less than 4 ms.m-l of burden.In multi-row blasts in which holes in a given effective row are fired on the same delay, the entire burden on any effective row should be detached from the rock mass just before charges in the next effeotive row detonate. Delays shorter than this give inferior blasting results and an increased likelihood of environmental and slope stability problems. If the inter-row delay is too long, cut-offs can occur, especially where the delay unit is located outside the blasthole. For a surface delay system, the optimum inter-row delay usually varies between 4 ms.m-l and 8 ms.m-l of effective burden. The number of rows that can be fired effectively with surface delay systems (in a single blast) is limited by the threat of cut-offs. Greater interrow delays and a larger number of rows per blast can be fired to advantage with down-the-hole delay systems.There are practical limits to the timing accuracy of all available delay systems. The existence of delay time variability should be recognized and duly considered in the design of blasts.The relationship between delay timing and blasting vibrations is not discussed.

Anglo American Platinum has adopted a strategy of best practice principles (BPP) for sampling, mass measurement, analysis, and metal accounting for more than a decade now. When new plants are designed, the most suitable sampling equipment and sampling protocols are implemented and material flows and plant layouts are designed around sampling strategies. A few years ago, a crushing plant for a high-grade matte stream was commissioned. The design called for the high-grade material to be crushed to 95% passing 2 mm, and the design allowed for a single-cutter primary Vezin sampler taking increments from a gravity flowing stream at regular intervals while filling a tanker for pneumatic offload at the base metal refinery. This was a single point of sampling and analysis that would measure the wanted output from the smelting complex and the input to the refineries. In addition, the design incorporated the functionality to collect increments in an ?interleaved? fashion from the Vezin sampler for internal precision checks. The metal accounting strategy for Anglo Platinum involves the ongoing measurement of all inputs, outputs, and stock levels for all operations for platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal (BM) content. Included are yearly stocktakes, usually done on 1 February, across the smelters and refineries (at least the base metal refinery). In the accounting period immediately following the introduction of the new crushing and sampling facility, a trend was developing whereby the absolute difference between the physical stock and theoretical stock (PGMs predominantly) increased for the two respective sites on an ongoing basis. The smelter showed an increase in physical stock compared to the theoretical stock (sender) and the base metal refinery showed an increase in theoretical stock against physical stock. Because of this anomaly, an additional stocktake was held in September for the period in question, and it was confirmed through the physical stock measurement results that the PGM accounting problem was indeed pointing towards the evaluation of the high-grade matte stream. This paper showcases parts of the process that took place to explain the poor accountabilities for the two sites. Previous results from the sampler ratification process (of the interleaved sampling design) were reanalysed, a physical inspection was carried out on the sampling system again, and the sampler performance was monitored (quality control parameters) for the period. From these investigations, it was found that airflows inside the Vezin introduced the sampling bias. A change in sampling protocol was introduced, as well as certain physical changes to the sampling equipment, to eliminate the airflow and thus the bias conditions significantly. The accounting period that followed the phased upgrading process showed that the accounting between the smelter and base metal refinery had been restored to within statistical limits (difference between physical and theoretical stock below 5% relative to theoretical stock). Flat jack stress determinations in selected colliery roadways have revealed a range of measured stress from 330 lb/sq. in. tension to 3,750 lb/sq. in. compression. Photoelastic examination of loaded plastic and actual rock model mine openings has shown that the primary horizontal stress required to attain these measured stresses would be from one to three times the superincumbent vertical load.Examination of roof movement with a borehole extensometer and a series of anchors at various horizons to 30 feet in a vertical roof borehole showed that when a standing face was advanced the roof movement was practically confined to the lower two feet. The majority of this movement occurred during the 36 hours after mining at this face commenced.The use of a radioactive isotope and a scintillation counter in a pair of parallel boreholes is a sensitive and accurate method of roof bedding plane crack detection.INTRODUCTIONA knowledge of strata stresses is required to understand the deformation of an underground opening and, in particular, the roof behaviour. It is the aim of investigations currently being conducted by Australian Coal Association (Research) Ltd. to determine the stress existing around mine openings and the location and magnitude of roof movement.STRATA PRESSURE MEASUREMENTMost measurements of strata stress are performed at the surface of underground openings and the majority measure the change of strain resulting from stress relief. The accuracy of the measured value of stress depends upon knowledge of the rock modulus of elasticity. The flat jack method has the advantage that strain relief is restored by a measured stress applied directly by the jack. The rock modulus of elasticity can also be determined.

"Numerical simulation on the fluid flow in a Flow-Control Mold (FC-Mold) were performed. The motion of inclusions were calculated. With FC-Mold, the flow pattern and surface velocity become more symmetrical, and at higher casting speed the velocity of liquid steel in the top region of the mold was largely reduced with the highest velocity of the meniscus reducing from 0.65 mis to 0.4 mis, and the meniscus shape became flatter. With FC-Mold, more inclusions approached to the surface of the slab and the amount of inclusion in the center of mold became fewer. Larger inclusions were easier to remove, however, the EM filed of the FC-Mold could hardly improve the removal of inclusions from the molten steel.IntroductionElectromagnetic brake technology is an effective method to control the flow pattern within continuous casting mold, together with other casting parameters, nozzle design and mold geometry [1-5]. Due to the interaction between the applied magnetic flux and the conductive molten steel inside the mold cavity, a force is generated in the direction opposite to the jet flow, which can decelerate the high speed steel jet from the SEN ports. The potential benefits include fewer surface and internal defects, fewer inclusion especially at higher casting speed. However if used imperfectly, electromagnetic forces can have opposite effect [6]. Numerical models are the best tool to optimize electromagnetic flow control. In the current study, numerical simulation was performed to investigate the flow field in a continuous casting FC-Mold, and the effect of different operation parameters on the flow, surface level and velocity in FC-Mold were discussed."

"Electrochemical techniques are a valuable means of analyzing the passivation of commercial copper anodes. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) provides information concerning transport and reaction phenomena occurring at an electrode surface. Commercial. copper anodes of varying compositions have been examined using EIS. Experiments were conducted in a flat cell with an electrolyte of 40 gil Cu2 + and 160 gil H2S04 maintained at 65 DC. Impedance spectra were obtained at the potentials characteristic of the open circuit voltage and passive region for each anode. The spectra of the passivating films exhibited a flattened resistive/capacitive loop at middle to high frequencies and an inductive loop at low frequencies. An equivalent· circuit utilizing an inductor-resistor series in parallel with the double layer capacitance and charge transfer resistance was adequate in modeling the impedance data. The influence of anodes impurities on the components of the equivalent circuit is discussed and correlated with a hi-layer passivation model.IntroductionPassivation of copper anodes during industrial electrorefining has received considerable attention in the past few decades. Great strides have been made in understanding the roles of anode impurities [1-25], electrolysis parameters [20,26], and electrolyte chemistries [20,26]. Even so, passivation still occurs even in the most modem of refineries. The exact cause of passivation is not fully understood. It is known that the anode surface becomes covered by a passivating film. This film has been proposed to be CuS04'&5H20, Cu20, or mixed oxides. The localized concentrations of Ft, Cu+, and Cu2+ ions determines which phase is more favorable. The presence of these ions is controlled by the reaction kinetics and diffusion of species through the slimes layer.Reaction kinetics between Cu, Cu +, and Cu2+ are based on the dissolution mechanism of copper. There exists four different models to describe the dissolution of pure copper. The classical model of Mattsson and Bockris [27] involves two single electron transfers with the cuprous-cupric reaction being the rate detennining step. More recently, Wong, Collier, and MacFarlane [28] used ac impedance to elucidate a more complex mechanism involving the affect of pH and anions. Their findings indicate that the formation of cuprous ions in solution, Cu(I)so~ is favored over Cu(1I) ions adsorbed to the electrode surface in the presence of sulfate and as pH increases from pH 1 to pH 5."

For small particles of niekel flotation eoncentrate (av. size 50 pm) the predominant heat transfer mechanism under suspension smelting conditions, prior to ignition, is conduction from the gas and not radiation from nearby hot bodies. Results of laboratory tests using gas temperatures 380-700°C and furnace wall temperatures 380-1100°C were in accord with heat transfer theory. In practieal flash smelters earlier ignition, and hence better utilization of the space in the shaft, would result from introduetion at the top of the shaft of gases hotter than the ignition temperature of 500-600°C.

The illustrated device uses the principle that the lamp can burn with a smaller inlet passage if the air is rich in O2 and that the size of the inlet can be made a measure of O2 percentage. The appliance consists of an adjustable cut-off applied to the inlet of a safety lamp of the improved Gray pattern. Precision is assessed from tables of calibration tests in air contaminated with blackdamp of CO2:N2 composiiton 1:5.67 at temperatures of 40-70 degrees F. Results are presented of tests at St. Germain's colliery, of tests in air contaminated with pure CO2 and of air contaminated with both blackdamp and inflammable gas; published ranges in mine-air blackdamp compositions are tabulated as ranging from 90.06% N2 to 43.90% CO2. When firedamp is present at 1.25-2.5%, its content must first be estimated by means of the cap and a fifth of its value then deducted from the lamp reading for O2

"INTRODUCTION Cobalt is an essential metal in the normal industrial ac¬tivity of the United States. Being an important constituent of high-speed steels and other cutting-tool materials, it becomes of critically essential importance during periods of national emergency. 3/ The Presidential order of December 20, 1940, included cobalt among other essential commodities that could be exported only under license. The Executive order 4/ listed cobalt metal, cobalt oxide, and alloys containing more than 5 per¬cent cobalt as being within the licensing requirements.There was no domestic marketed production of, cobalt products from 1931 until 1940 when the Pyrites Co. 5/ produced some cobalt oxide. The major portion of the domestic cobalt requirements has been obtained from Northern Rhodesia, the Belgian Congo, and French Morocco. 6/ The uncertainty of sea transportation from those sources of supply demanded that steps be taken to obtain from domestic raw materials an adequate supply of cobalt for use in the materials required for production of indispensable machined war metal products. In connection with the national policy for attaining self-sufficiency of strategic and critical materials, the Bureau of Mines, Boulder City, Nev., Experiment Station initiated studies to recover cobalt from the low-grade oxidized cobalt deposits in the Goodsprings district, Nevada. Hewett 7/ reported occurrence of cobalt specifically in the Blue Jay, Columbia, Copper Chief, and Highline mines and generally over a widespread area in the district."

"The Highland Uranium Project (HUP) is located approximately sixty miles northeast of Casper, Wyoming and is owned and operated by Power Resources, Inc. (PRI). With an annual production of680 tonnes (1.5 million lbs) U308, HUP is one of the largest uranium producers by in-situ leach (ISL) in the western world. Uranium is currently produced from four wellfields with a total flow rate of approximately 1,135 m3/hr (5,000 gpm). The carbonate leach solutions are processed by anion ion exchange at two satellite facilities located in close proximity to the wellfields. The loaded resin is transported by truck to a central processing facility for elution of the uranium. Uranium in the pregnant eluant is precipitated and washed prior to calcining.Wastewater from the satellite facilities is treated and used for irrigation at a Land Application Facility. The wastewater generated at the central processing facility is injected into a 2,750 m (9,000 ft) deep waste disposal well.When economical mining of the orebodies is complete, restoration of the groundwater is initiated. There are currently two wellfields at HUP undergoing ground water restoration. Phase I restoration consists of removal of the carbonate leach solution from the ore body. Phase II includes treating the withdrawn fluid with reverse osmosis and reinjection of the permeate into perimeter wells.Future plans include construction of additional satellite facilities at the Gas Hills Project and other economical deposits located within 240 km (150 mi) of HUP. The capacity of the central processing facility will be increased to 1,815 tonnes (4 million lbs) U308 per year by late 1999."

THIS investigation was carried on by means of models and the applica-tion of the principles of similitude to determine the effects of props, props and cribs and sand filling in longwall mining. The geologic structure and rate of face retreat were kept constant and the only change introduced was in the method of support. It is not felt necessary to repeat a description of apparatus, or to explain the fact that a scalar model made in all parts of the same material as the prototype will behave similarly to the prototype when rotated at speeds such that the centrifugal force is as many times the gravitational force as the prototype dimension is a similar linear model dimensions. The reader is referred to earlier papers1,2 for further information regarding these statements. All models were made of sandstone and were as in Fig. 6. They are composed of a 3/16-in. ore body bed A, overlain by a 3/16-in- bed B, a 3/8-in, bed C and two 1/8 -in. beds D and E. The model was rotated at ±2350 r.p.m. equivalent to a model ratio of 1268. It was worked back 1/4 in. at a time before being replaced in the centrifuge and again rotated. Table 1 gives model and prototype dimensions occurring in this discussion, the prototype dimensions being 1268 times the model dimensions. Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 were taken while the model was rotating at 2350 r.p.m. One was taken for each face retreat of 26.4 ft., but for obvious ,reasons all are not presented. Fig. 1 (A-E) shows the behavior of this type of structure with face retreats of 26.4 ft, and no artificial support. Fig. 2(A-E) shows the behavior of this type of structure where breaker and face props were used. This paper suggests an alternative design approach for an innovative shovel dipper, for use in ground conditions where cutting of virgin ground rather than scooping of blasted material is required. Not only does the new design have an optimized dimension ratio (width:height:depth) and attachment arrangement (angle, position), but also a non-linear pro¯le in 2D and 3D. The approach is based on the simulation of a shovel's duty cycle to verify a pilot dipper model. In order to achieve a realistic simulation that could be used to evaluate a dipper design, the model is e®ectively a descriptor of actual shovel activity under soft ground conditions. The shovel geometry, motion and operation, with an emphasis on digging and dumping kinematics and dynamics are the principal elements of the simulation. The simulation considers a fresh face location, repeating tucking, digging and dumping swing motions within the geometric range of the machine, ending when no more face material remaining within reach without re- positioning. The simulation yields digging force, friction force, trajectory, ¯ll time, ¯ll factor, etc, which may be integrated into two basic considerations: power draw (output) and volume delivered (production), as indicators of dipper performance. The simulation has been used as a tool to modify an existing dipper design, prior to looping further simulation cycles. Ultimately, an optimized or totally-new-concept shape is realized. A prototype dipper as a fractional scale model will be built to verity the performance under actual mining conditions.

The widely accepted kinetic model for the gaseous reduction of hematite is critically examined. The formation of the wustite layer during internal reduction cannot be explained in terms of solid-state diffusion. Present evidence indicates the existence of a micropore system in the wustite adjacent to the magnetite with the gas/solid type of reaction occurring not only at the iron/wustite interface but also at the wustite/magnetite interface. During the partial reduction of dense hematite pellets, in a controlled atmosphere, porous magnetite and wustite are formed as products. The mean pore size, as measured by mercury injection, increases with time at constant temperature and with temperature increase over the range 6500C to 950°C. The sizes of the pores indicate that Knudsen diffusion is the principal gaseous transport mechanism across thick layers of magnetite or wustite.The kinetics of the gaseous reduction to iron are consistent with a mixed control mechanism involving the interaction of gaseous diffusion effects with a first order reversible chemical reaction at the iron/wustite interface. Because of the larger pore sizes in the iron layers, ordinary molecular gaseous diffusion must be the principal transport mechanism. The usual experimental methods used for establishing the validity of chemical rate ~ontrol are incapable of differentiating between the mixed control- mechanism and exclusive chemical control.Some implications of mixed control kinetics are developed, including a predicted independence of rate on reducing gas pressure at higher pressures.INTRODUCTIONAn extensive literature review of the reduction of iron oxides has been compiled recently by Themelis and Gauvin (1962). From the large number of papers published and the widely divergent opinions of workers in this field, it appears that a simple unified quantitative analysis of reduction kinetics is not possible. The 1,380 m (4,200 ft) long New Crystal Springs Bypass (Polhemus)Tunnel (NCSBT) will replace the existing Crystal Springs Bypass Pipeline. This tunnel project is part of the SFPUC’s $4.3 billion capital improvement program to repair and seismically upgrade their aging pipelines, tunnels, reservoirs and dams that provide drinking water to more than 2.4 million customers in the San Francisco Bay Area. This paper describes the development of the tunnel alignment and design, and the complex ground conditions of the Franciscan Mélange. Of particular interest is the challenge of tunneling with a possible downhill grade of 3%, a rigorous environmental process and incorporating the lessons learned from 1960s construction of the adjoining Crystal Springs Bypass Tunnel.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Kulumadau deposit represents an intermediate-sulfidation epithermal gold deposit (3.8 Mt at 2.3 g/t, Ag:Au = 1). Mineralisation is primarily confined to hydrothermal breccias within pre-existing fault zones, where it is disseminated throughout a hydrothermal matrix comprising chlorite-quartz-adularia-illite-I/S clays-calcite-pyrite. The host sequence represents numerous mid-Miocene pyroclastic flow eruptions within a tectonically active emergent shallow marine to subaerial depositional setting. Subsequent growth faulting was responsible for debris avalanches, which were subsequently cut by reverse faults. Faults were exploited by hydrothermal fluids, with the heightened porosity at the juncture between faults and debris material facilitating boiling of the ore constituents. Fluid inclusion studies suggest that fluid mixing between meteoric fluids and magmatic fluids, accompanied by boiling, were the primary mechanisms for gold deposition. "INTRODUCTION Extraction of alumina from various materials, such as low-grade bauxite and clay, by means of a lime-soda sinter has been the subject of a number ofinvestigations (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 16, 17). 5/ in recent years, Although many of the details of these investigations are lacking, it is believed that there is one difficultly that frequently develops under certain conditions, namely, that of thickening or gelation of the slurry formed during extraction of the sinter. If gelation occurs even to a slight extent* Serious mechanical difficulties result, very low liquor recoveries are obtained, and the extraction step becomes virlually inoperable. Under 'favorable conditions, a solid gel is formed which can only be removed from the equipment with great difficulty. At the Eastern Experiment. Station of the Bureau of Mines in College Park, Md., a study of lime-soda processes was begun in November 1941. This work has included studies on low-grade bauxites, kaolin clay, and nodular diasporic clay. Gelation was most serous with kaolin clay and least with diasporic clay. As a part of the Bureau's investigation, a study was made of the effect of the pertinent variables on gelation. The results permit the selection of various sets of conditions at which gelation will not occur. These data are essential to the final selection of optimum conditions for the over-all process."

A unique, regional grid of deep (12 - 14 second record length), seismic reflection and refraction data has been recorded by the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) across the offshore Gippsland Basin and parts of the adjacent Bass Basin, in southeastern Australia. These data have been combined with onshore mapping to produce a new model for the development of the Gippsland and adjacent Bass Strait basins. Overall, the Gippsland Basin contains up to 12 - 14 km of sediment in an ESE-trending depocentre bounded on its north and northwestern margins by a detachment ramp, and on its southern side by a relatively linear, listric fault system. The basin, together with the adjacent Bass and Otway Basins, appears to have formed as part of a linked, largely- strike-slip to 'transtensional' system, which started to extend through Bass Strait, probably during the latest Jurassic. Each of the basins developed by movement on a common detachment or detachment complex, which produced headwall extension at their western ends, in the areas now occupied by the Strzelecki Ranges, Otway Ranges - Torquay Sub-basin, and Robe Trough. Adjustments and reactivation from the mid Cretaceous of several postulated microplates in the region, largely in response to Tasman Basin rifting, gave rise to the wrench-related and compressional structures which form the major petroleum targets in the Gippsland Basin. However, the same process formed largely extensional stuctures in the Bass Basin. Our interpretation of the tectonic history of the Gippsland Basin leads us to the conclusion that there may have been several phases of petroleum generation and migration, and that potential petroleum traps appear to exist in the deeper section, in structures sometimes not reflected at the top or near-top Latrobe Group levels.
