Sixteen steels containing different combinations of chromium and molybdenum, in amounts up to 5 per cent of each element, were examined for microstructure and hardness after air cooling and after furnace cooling from suitable austenitizing temper- atures. Diagrams summarizing the structnres and hadness resulting from these two cooling rates are presented (Figs. 3, 4, 7).t Data were also obtained on the influence of these two elements, individually and in combination, on the depth of decarburiza-tion observed after furnace cooling (Fig. 8). Composition of Material The chemical composition of the steels investigated is given in Table I. The plain carbon steel was made in a 2 5-ton Heroult electric-are furnace, while the alloy steels were made in a 4.5-ton Ajax-Northrup elec- tric induction furnace. The cast ingots were hot-rolled to 1.75-in. bars. Air-cooled Series The I.75-in. bars were forged to flat plates, 0.25 in. thick, from which specimens 0.5 in. wide by 2 in. long were cut. The specimens were pretreated to improve their homogeneity by heating to 1830°F. (I000°C.) for 20 min. and oil-quenching. They were then reheated to 1740°F. The temperatures of solid-liquid interfaces have been measured during the growth of Sn-Pb alloy crystals which exhibited a cellulur substructure. A simple descriptive theory was used in combination with this data and the other measurable growth variables to predict some features of the solute segregation such as the intercell excess concentration and the depth of cell grooves during freezing. The effective distribution coefficient at the tip of a cell, a, was predicted and experimentally found to vary in the range, 1 >a > k0. At the lower limit, the severe segregation that must arise between dendritic cells was substantiated by various observations such as the existence of a second Phase even for alloys of only 0.2 wt pct Pb. ThE cellular morphology of a solid-liquid interface is known to coincide with the formation of a zone of constitutional supercooling ahead of the interface during growth.' The occurrence of various cell structures, (two-dimensional cells, regular cells, dendritic cells), has been quantitatively investigated,'2,4 but the segregation of solute which arises as a consequence of this mode of growth has only been examined qualitatively. THE application of other than mechanical methods to the study of the mechanical-physical properties of metals has become in the last few years a topic of investigation of ever-increasing interest, both from the theoretical standpoint and from that of the engineer and constructor. Besides the investigations which have been made of 'the magnetic properties of ferromagnetic metals, in their relation to the mechanical properties of these metals, which will be discussed more in detail below, there have been made studies of other phenomena in the same relation, and methods for the mechanical testing of metals have even been suggested, for example, the microscopic method of Tammann,1 and the thereto-electric, method of Turner2 for determining elastic limits. The application of all such methods, which are based upon the dependence of some physical, crystallographic, or possibly chemical property, upon the mechanical state of the metal, must be preceded by close and careful correlation of these various "test" properties with the known mechanical state of the different metals or materials. It is with this view that the present work, as well as that of many previous investigators of, what .may be termed in the interests of brevity, the mechanical-magnetic properties of ferromagnetic materials of construction, has been done.

AT the symposium on gases in metals held at the Annual Meeting of the Institute in New York in February, 1933, a suggestion was made1 that the term "gases in metals" as now employed is unsuitable as descriptive of the substances usually involved in that term. The Executive Committee of the Iron and Steel Division thereupon appointed a subcommittee, composed of the authors of this paper, to study the "nomenclature involved in the general subject of gases in metals, including the name itself" and to report its findings to the Executive Committee. The subcommittee decided at once to discuss the subject with an "Advisory Council" composed of representative metallurgists, metallographers and analytical and physical chemists in the Pittsburgh district.2 As a result of conferences held by the subcommittee and with the Council, a report with recommendations was submitted to the Executive Committee at an open meeting on Oct. 5, 1933, during the National Metals Congress in Detroit. The report and recommendations were accepted, and the subcommittee was instructed to proceed with the dissemination of the report for the purpose of having its recommendation generally adopted either as it was or in a modified form as a result of further discussion.

DURING a session on coal and coke at the February, 1926, meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, the writer called attention to the important work on the X-ray analysis of coal1,2 being carried on in England by C. Norman Kemp and his associates. This aroused so much interest that a paper on the subject was requested for the October meeting. It has seemed advisable to make this paper a preliminary survey of the present status in the application of X-ray methods to coal problems and to follow it from time to time with further articles as the art develops. A survey of this sort naturally divides itself into two parts, radioscopic analysis of the distribution of constituents through the body of the coal, and diffraction analysis of the state of association of the elementary components. In this article the subject matter concerning radioscopic analysis has been drawn almost entirely from the writings of Kemp and his associates and the illustrations have been specially furnished by him. It is a pleasure to record here a great indebtedness for this courtesy and cooperation. The subject matter and illustrations concerning diffraction analysis are taken from the author's unpublished researches.

A classification of natural objects is usually based either upon some fundamental and permanent attribute of the thing itself (as in the case of scientific classifications), or it embraces one or more generalizations convenient for use in ordinary life. Thus, it suffices for the statistician to know that so many tons of fish are annually taken by our fishermen, and that they realize so many thousands of dollars, whereas to the student of natural history the anatomy, habits, and relationships of the animals are of chief interest, as settling their respective places in the scale of animate nature. Many different classifications of coals have been attempted, as one would naturally anticipate from the immense extent of the coal trade, and the different localities whence the supply was derived. The English divisions were prevalent up to the date of the publication of the last geological survey of the State, except so far as they were modified by local designations. Indeed, Rogers' classifications made very little alteration in the English nomenclature, as may be seen by comparing the tables given below. The rapid and comparatively recent development of flotation has opened so fascinating a field for study and research that the older processes of gravity concentration no longer receive the attention they deserve. The early work of Munroel and Richards12 and the more recent contributions by Clevenger and Coe,3 Laist and Wiggin,4 Ammon,5 Bardwell,6 Crowfoot,' and Hayden8 (to mention only some which have appeared in our own Transactions) and by Schu1z,9 have furnished so much data that to offer something new seems a difficult task. It is still possible, however, to present known facts from a different point of view, and, with this in mind, the writer has undertaken to express basic principles of gravity concentration in terms of simple mathematics and mechanics; the conclusions thus reached will be found to correspond, in general, with those obtained by experimental methods. Rittinger, in his classic Aufbereitungskunde (1867)) reached analogous conclusions by way of intricate higher mathematics, for which reason his interesting investigations have remained a sealed book to most of us. The writer hopes that a more elementary treatment of the subject, based in part on Rittinger's metheds, may arouse new interest in the study of basic principles.

INTRODUCTION The Broken Hill orebody was discovered in 1883. The richness of the deposit encouraged rapid development of the field and within fifteen years ten mining companies were operating. By 1940, several companies located in the centre of the field with limited reserves, had ceased operation. These leases have been acquired by Broken Hill South Limited and North Broken Hill Limited. The four companies currently operating in the field are, in order of increasing production rate:¬- Broken Hill South Limited (BH South) North Broken Hill Limited (North BH) The Zinc Corporation, Limited (ZC) and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) The tonnages treated by each company since the present plants have been in operation are shown in Figure 1. The leases are located as shown in Figure 2, and an aerial view of Broken Hill showing the spread of the City on each side of the line of lode is shown in Figure 3. The present treatment plants date back to the early 1930's when the BH South plant was built. The North BH and ZC plants were built in 1939 and NBHC's in 1952. The three plants built before 1940 have similar crushing and grinding flowsheets. NBHC differs in that it includes rod mills with consequent differences in fine crushing equipment.

Oleic acid is the chief ingredient of fatty acids used as collectors in nonsulfide flotation. With a few notable exceptions, the various quantities of saturated and other unsaturated acids comprising the remainder are usually unspecified. There have been occasional investigations to determine the collecting ability of these other acids and their effect on collection with oleic acid, but much remains to be done in this field. Hukki and Vartiainen, on the basis of tests using palmitic, oleic, and linoleic acids and an impure linolenic acid, concluded: "The collecting power of fatty acids used in flotation increases with increasing unsaturation of the hydrocarbon chain." 1 Their work was concerned mainly with the response of ilmenite to the foregoing collectors, although tests were also made with magnetite, pyrite, hematite, and rutile. Cooke and Nummela, employing an al- most identical technical procedure to evaluate flotation of hematite, magnetite, and goethite with various fatty acids, including oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids of the highest purity obtainable, found: "The effectiveness of 18-carbon unsaturated fatty acids, as collectors for hematite, decreases with increase in the number of non-conjugated double bonds."' In the foregoing investigations, collector efficacy was measured on the basis of reagent addition in moles per liter.

The first report on the slag viscosity work of the Bureau of Mines was made by one of the authors1 in 1916. It was concerned chiefly with the method of measurement. A paper2 on this phase of the work was presented to the Institute in February, 1917, and a similar paper3 was communicated to the Faraday Society. PuRpose and Scope of the Slag Viscosity Tables Following the development of a suitable method, the next step in the investigation was the measurement of slag viscosity over a wide range of temperature and composition, and the arrangement of this experimental data in the form of tables for the use of the blast-furnace operator. It is believed that this information, if used intelligently, should help the operator to reduce losses in production caused by off-grade pig iron, to improve fuel economy, to promote operating efficiency, and to extend present-day practice to meet the increasing need of smelting lean and complex ores. In the experimental part of the work it was carly, observed that the temperature-viscosity relations of a slag were determined, for practical purposes, by the relative proportions of the three major constituents, lime (CaO), alumina (Al2O3), and silica (SiO2), provided the percentage

THE necessity for slime elimination from valuable mineral and coal products has become increasingly significant within the past 5 years.1,2 Most of the mechanized mining and present beneficiation methods have resulted in larger tonnages of extreme fines, silts, and clay, commonly called slimes, processed by the preparation plant. Economics in turn have forced the plant operator constantly to lower the bottom size of effective beneficiation, necessitating an almost complete recovery of valuable solids regardless of particle size. When these important factors are considered, the need for an efficient slime removal method for fine solids becomes self-evident. Ordinarily slimes have been classified as ranging from 75 microns, or 200 mesh, down to colloidal dimensions of less than one micron. At the same time there is general agreement that the most troublesome slimes are primarily clays, silts and extreme fines, so that the actual top size may be placed at approximately 30 to 40 microns. This immediately restricts any desliming operation to classification, as screening or other methods would be both uneconomical and grossly inefficient at such dimensions. The restrictions placed on drilling by the Federal Government, which caused a severe curtailment in activity at the beginning of the year, were relaxed somewhat so as to permit the drilling of one shallow† gas well per 40 acres. New wells numbering 574† were drilled for a combined depth of nearly 1,500,000 It., and of this number 131 were dry holes with a footage of slightly over 375,000. Inside locations account for the majority of these totals and the increasing demand for natural gas would normally have increased the number considerably, but many of the independent operators chose to ask for fewer exceptions to Order M-68 of the Office of Production Management, and consequently to curtail the number of wells drilled. Initial open flow of natural gas developed from all operations§ is over 230 million cu. ft. Nearly 191 million cu. ft. of this volume resulted from the 410 new gas wells drilled to horizons above the Lower Devonian, and the footage drilled in these wells accounts for approximately 93 per cent of the total. Shallow Development Oil.—Thirty oil, wells, with a total initial production of slightly over 152 bbl. and a footage of 50.000, were drilled during the § Including deepening wells previously drilled.

HOWLAND, GEORGE P. HULST, FREDERICK 1. SNYDER. There were 32 members present at the dinner of the Chicago Section which was held at the Chicago Engineers' Club on Friday Evening, December 22. At the meeting after the dinner, the Chairman called attention to the work of Mr. Hoover in Belgium and spoke briefly of the assistance which' could be given him through the Belgian Kiddies, Ltd. Mr. Alonzo Kinyon read a paper on "Burring Powdered Coal" which so interested the members that many of them participated in the long discussion which followed. Prof. Harry B. Pulsifier then described the metallurgical plants about Chicago. He mentioned briefly the equipment and interesting features of 30 metallurgical plants of importance and stated that there were also 200 foundries in the district. He said that when number, size, quality and diversity of the plants are considered, the Chicago District is justified in calling itself the greatest metallurgical center on earth. Previous Publications THE first report on the slag viscosity work of the Bureau of Mines was made by one of the authors 1 in 1916. It was concerned chiefly with, the method of measurement. HE addition of rhenium to molybdenum is known to produce alloys with good workability.&apos; Lawley and Maddin found that the critical stress for twinning in this system was lowered by the addition of 35 pct Re, which suggests that twinning may re- place the usual slip operation as the major element of deformation. The twinning elements in bcc Mo-Re alloys have been reported as the (112) planes and the <111> directions.3 This note represents the continuation of this investigation, in which the authors found that the occurrence of twinning promotes the formation of a bcc tetragonal phase, previously identified as u by Greenfield and Beck.4 Specimens of Mo-35 pct Re alloy, prepared as described previusly, were solution annealed at 2400o, cooled to room temperature, and plastically deformed by compression to induce twinning. After subsequent aging for 8 hr at 1300°C, traces of a were observed along the grain boundaries and at the interfaces between the twins and the matrix, Fig. 1. With increased aging time the cr phase grew into larger clusters and finally occupied the entire twinned area, Fig. 2. Experiments also indicated that if twinning did not precede aging, there was no visible evidence of a in the microstructure.

CERTAIN observations from the field and laboratory suggest the need for recasting some of our ideas about gypsum as a rock-forming mineral and in relation to supplies for industrial use. Until about 25 years ago, the use of gypsum was confined almost entirely to agriculture. During the past quarter century, though, its usefulness has been greatly developed, particularly in the building trades, which now absorb most of the gypsum produced. In 1919, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, the output of crude gypsum was 2,240,163 tons, a gain of 912 per cent. in 25 years. About one-half of this production was mined in New York, Ohio, and Michigan, where the proved supplies can hardly be regarded as over-large when viewed in relation to the rapid expansion of industrial requirements. The occurrence of gypsum in the United States is treated by R. W. Stone and others.1 The deposits of Canada are described by L. H. Cole.2 Several states, including Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Michigan, and New York, have had special surveys made their of gypsum deposits, but the reports, as a rule, refer to conditions as they existed from 15 to 20 years ago.
