This paper describes an important function of mining in Southeast Missouri. The practice is a necessary procedure to prevent disintegration of the pillars. Although the technique is peculiar to this district, it might have application in other mines using room and pillar method. CONSIDERING the subject alone, this paper would cover only a mechanical treatise of pillar roping. Because the St. Joseph Lead Co. originated the practice, it is proper to give a short introduction to the company. It is also proper to describe pillars and discuss their purpose to justify expending large sums of money to preserve them after the surrounding area has been thoroughly mined. Because the St. Joseph Lead Co. originated the practice of back pinning with wedge bolts, patch plates and channel irons, and the pouring of substitute pillars of concrete, these too, are mentioned. The Southeast Missouri Division of the St. Joseph Lead Co. is the largest lead producer in the United States. About 95 pct of the present producing mines are in St. Francois County, which begins 60 miles south of St. Louis. The entire lead ore production of this county, at the present time, is mined and milled by this company, treatment plant capacity being about 22,000 tons per day. This area is also the oldest, lead having been mined at Mine La Motte, in Madison County, in 1723. Estimated production of all the various companies that have mined here is about 7,000,000 short tons of pig lead. Method of Mining The lead occurs in the ore as galena. Galena is found either in the form of disseminated or solid streaks, of varying thickness. Ore stratum is the Bonne Terre dolomite, which is about 350 ft thick, but almost all the ore is in the lower 100 ft. Ore is mined by room and pillar method in open stopes. These stopes vary in height from 7 ft to 200 ft, depending on the thickness of the pay ore in that spot. Back, or roof, is supported entirely by pillars. In a majority of stopes, after the loose scales are mined down, the back has remained solid for many years (fig. 1). Under ideal conditions pillars are spaced to form an equilateral triangle and are as small and as far apart as the height of the stope and the character of the back will permit. They vary in diameter from 10 ft to 50 ft and are from 18 ft to 50 ft apart, measured from the outer edges. In general, the pillars are approximately 12 ft in diameter, and 25 ft apart. The spacing is very uncertain because of the vagaries of the ore trend, the desire to better support breaks in the back, and the attempt to spot out the thinner ore by not placing one in the core of the ore body. The occurrence and the temperature dependence of the athermal martensitic transformation in bcc Cu-Zn ß-phase alloys have been studied by cold-state microscopy, differential thermal analysis, and electrical -resistivity measurements. CinenzatograpJzic studies have shown that in the majority of alloys the transformation occurs in two stages. A thermoelastic phase, having a 'needlelike" uppearance, forms initially at the MS temperature and grows relatively slowly, chiefly in the edge (lengthwise) direction. With further cooling, an additional martensitic phase forms in rapid bursts at a lower temperature, MB, Both martensitic phases appear to have the same cry stallographic habit hut their modes of formation and growth are different. For the composition range studied, between 38.55 and 41.49 wt pct Zn, the habit planes determined are close to the (2.17 ,12) plane of the matrix, in general agreement with the prediction of the phenomenological theory of martensite formation. Thermal cycling through the MB temperature produces permanent plastic deformation in the 0 matrix and gradutally eliminates the typical burst phenomena. Thermal cycling only through the MS temperature produces no noticeable deformation effects. THE bcc Cu-Zn ß-phase alloys tend to become unstable at low temperatures and undergo a martensitic transformation,'-3 but the details of the transformation have not been completely determined. Following earlier metal log raphic and X-ray work1 Tichener and ever' determined by means of electrical-resistivity measurements the temperature range of the martensite transformation during continuous cooling. The transformation temperature was found to decrease with increasing zinc content, becoming about -130°C for an alloy containing 40.04 wt pct Zn. Hull and Garwood3 made a metallo-graphic study of Cu-Zn 0 brasses at temperatures down to -160°C, and determined the habit plane of the transformation product for an alloy containing 38.88 wt pct Zn. No metallographic studies below liquid-nitrogen temperatures have been reported. The martensitic transformation in ß-brass alloys can also be induced by deformation.1,4 The MD temperature corresponding to the appearance of the strain-induced martensite is some 300°C higher than that observed without strain, and hence the transformation can be strain-induced in alloys containing a higher percentage of zinc. Massalski and Barrett4 found that alloys containing as much as 51.89 wt pct Zn could be transformed into a faulted hcp structure by cold working at liquid-helium temperature. Because the details of the MS temperature and morphology reported in the literature are somewhat incomplete, a further study has been made of some of the above features. A design of a cryogenic stage for optical metallography5 has permitted the examination of specimens at temperatures down to 4.2oK, and the use of a cinecamera has permitted a study of the morphology on cooling and heating. The particular aim of the present work was to examine the transformation temperatures, the habit planes, and the growth morphology over a wide composition range in the ß-phase field. The effect of thermal cycling upon the subsequent transformation was also examined.

The substantial expansion of previously discovered gas pools was the principal feature of petroleum activity in West Virginia during 1940. At least one new gas pool was discovered and various other successful wildcat completions may prove to be gas-pool openers. Some slight extensions of oil pools were also made. The new productive territory, principally gas, added by these extensions was approximately 33,800 acres. ' In general, oil activity was slight because of unfavorable crude prices. Gas activity, on the contrary, increased considerably, although the price of gas did not materially change. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 709 new wells were drilled, resulting in 102 new oil wells with I055 bbl. of daily new produc-tion; 468 new gas wells with 633>g47,000 cu. it. of daily open flow; and 139 dry holes. Also, 91 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 143 bbl. and 44,833,000 cu. ft. of added production. On the new wells the oil average was 10.34 bbl, per well per day; and the gas average was 1,354,000 cu. ft. per well per day. On new wells the ratio of dry holes to completions was 19.61 per cent. On deeper drilling to other sands the ratio of failures was 12.I per cent. From an exploratory standpoint, one strictly new gas pool (Lorentz) was opened in Upshur County. Little forecast of its extent or reserve can now be made. The new extensions of various other previously discovered pools, however, give assurance of a new gas reserve that will equal approximately a year of gas demand. In addition to these definite supplies two widely separated Oriskany sand (L. Dev.) wildcats in Jackson County, one of which was completed late in 1940 and the other early in 194.1, may indicate two separate pools or may greatly extend known pools. In south-ern Kanawha County, also, an old Oris-kany-sand well deepened to the White Clinton sand (Sil.) showed a volume of 733,000 cu. ft. and rock pressure of 1800 Ib., giving rather clear assurance that this deep sand, in which only slight quantities of gas had previously been found, should eventually supply much new gas. On the other hand, various deep tests to the Oriskany sand in Harrison, Putnam, Randolph and Wood Counties were totally dry or gave only small volumes of gas, The principal oil wells completed, by counties, were: Calhoun, 15; Clay, Ir; Pleasants, 14; Ritchie, 15; and Roane, 7. Production for the year was estimated by the U. S. Bureau of Mines as 3,444,000 bbl., as compared to 3,684,000 bbl. in 1939. The leading counties in gas-well completions were: Boone, 36; Braxton, 17; Cabell, 25; Calhoun, 16; Clay, 22; Gilm.er, 47; Jackson, 38; Kanatvha, 77; Lincoln, 18; Putnam, 32; IGtchie, 40; and Wayne, 31, Production for the year is estimated by me as I70,000,000,000 cu. ft. as compared to I59,226,000,000 cu. ft.* in 1939. A pressure-sintering method was used to produce binder-free and very dense TiC specimens. Some physical properties of these TIC bodies were determined and found to compare favorably with those of certain cemented Tic grades. It was also observed that the hot transverse rupture strength of TiC bodies remained substantially the same regardless of the amount or type of binder material used. STUDIES of the structure and physical properties of refractory materials have been intensified recently because of the urgent need for nonstrategic materials that retain their strength at high temperatures. Research aimed at determining and improving the physical properties of cemented carbides and borides has been accelerated with a view toward possible use of such materials in connection with turbine blades, rocket nozzles, and other high temperature applications. On the hypothesis that the strength requirements in connection with some of the above applications could be met only by proper choice of cementing agents for such refractory materials, the literature describing the physical properties of borides or carbides was reviewed. However, with a few exceptions,'-" references were found only to compositions containing at least one or more auxiliary binder metals. Cobalt and nickel are among the most frequently employed cementing agents. The melting point of Tic (approximately 3250°C) and therefore the sintering temperature, at which notable densification of a cold pressed Tic powder compact could be expected in the absence of a liquid binder phase, is relatively high. The present study makes use of a high temperature, pressure-sintering procedure, recently described by one of the authors in connection with the sintering of binder-free ZrB,," to produce dense bodies of sintered Tic—free of any cementing agent. During the course of this sintering study, some physical properties of dense Tic bodies produced by this method will be discussed. Materials, Preparation of Samples, Testing Methods The procedure for the forming of Tic powder consisted of mixing graphite and TiH, powders in stoi-chiometric proportions, and heating this mixture in a H, atmosphere and carbon crucible by high frequency, to temperatures ranging between 1900° and 2100°C (3452" and 3812°F). The powdered carbide was then comminuted and screened to the desired particle size. Table I shows the chemical analysis of the two grades that were employed for the production of samples during this work. Bodies of Tic, approximately 2.5xlx0.5 cm were produced in graphite molds that were heated by direct conduction. Sintering was carried out at temperatures for time intervals ranging from approximately 0 to 30 sec under a constant pressure of about 1.3 tons per sq in. An alternate method for the production of samples consisted in cold pressing the individual Tic grades at pressures ranging from 4 to 10 tons per sq in. and sintering in a hydrogen atmosphere in graphite crucibles heated by high frequency induction. Sintering temperatures ranged from 2600° to 2900°C (4715° to 5255°F). Electrical testing was done by measuring potentiometrically the voltage drop over a length of 1.5 cm for a current of 10 amp at room temperature. Cross-sectional areas as well as densi-

BALL wear in wet grinding mills has been the subject of considerable discussion in the last few years. Its importance to millmen is obvious in view of the fact that ball wear may cost from 2 to 4¢ per ton of ore for the more fortunate operators and many times this cost when a refractory ore must be reduced to a fine state of comminution. Consequently, any factual information that may be obtained on the nature of ball wear may be applied to introduce changes leading to lower ball consumption and therefore also to lower costs. In 1940, while employed with the Britannia Mining and Smelting Co., Britannia Beach, B.C., I had occasion to investigate factors that might affect ball consumption. We performed a number of tests, which will be briefly described. These tests originated as a result of changing from a 3 1/2-in. ball to a 2-in. ball of different type of manufacture and were motivated by the desire to obtain the best possible type of 2-in. ball. Our testing was helped by the fact that the company operated a one-ton electric furnace, so that it was quite easy to make steel changes. It should be emphasized at the beginning that these tests produced results that in their general application to milling should be interpreted qualitatively rather than quantitatively. As will be evident in the description of the method used in testing, the balls were subjected to an intermittent batch grinding treatment, which may have produced results in rate of steel wear that may not have an accurate correlation with steel consumption in full-scale mill operation. However, with this fixed and rather arbitrary method of testing, results were obtained that may be of some interest and may stimulate further work on this subject. Unfortunately, owing to pressure of war work, our tests, which we had intended to repeat on a continuous grinding operation, had to be discontinued. METHOD OF TESTING Tests were made in a small cylindrical mill, rotating at 72 r.p.m. Internal dimensions of the mill were 10 1/2-in. dia. by 9 in. The cylindrical inner surface was lined with rubber and the two ends were formed by steel plates. A charge of 2000 grams dry feed and 2000 c.c. of water was added every 2 hr., the mill being drained of pulp before the addition of each charge, by tilting and sluicing with water. The mill was run on afternoon and night shift for daily periods of about 15 hr. total grinding time, and each test lasted from 60 to 150 hr. This batch method of testing involved a higher average pulp temperature in the mill, which undoubtedly affected comparative results in some of the tests. HARDNESS OF BALL VS. WEAR In these tests, special "eutectoid" steel balls were used, some of which were chill-cast and quenched, some sand-cast and quenched, and some sand-cast and annealed to a dead soft condition. THIS is a preliminary report on a detailed metal- lographic investigation of the bainite reaction in a plain carbon hypoeutectoid steel. In view of the current interest in the bainite reaction and of the controversies which still exist about even the basic phenomenology of this mode of transformation, it was considered desirable to present a summary of the more important results obtained to date prior to the completion of this investigation. The steel used contained 0.29 pct C, 0.76 pct Mn, 0.25 pct Si, 0.005 pct P, and 0.007 pct S. The alloy was homogenized for 48 hr at 1250°C. Individual specimens were then austenitized for 30 min at 1300°C and isothermally transformed for various times at temperatures above and within the bainite region, ranging from 775" through 500°C at intervals of 25°C. These specimens were carefully examined on a research metallograph; a few specimens of especial interest were also studied electron microscopically.' Bainite may be defined as the aggregate structure resulting from the precipitation of carbides from supersaturated ferrite which formed by nucleation and diffusion-limited growth. Two groups of experimental observations made during the present study provide support for this mechanism of the bainite reaction: 1—at 625°C, partial conversion of pro-eutectoid ferrite to bainite began after more than 99 pct of the austenite had decomposed and 2—the precipitation of bainitic carbides occurred only within the ferrite phase. The proeutectoid ferrite and the bainite reactions in the steel studied were found to be morphologically continuous. Following the classification scheme of Mehl and Dube,2 three principal morphologies of proeutectoid ferrite were identified in the temperature region (625" to 550°C) in which the two reactions blend—grain boundary allotriomorphs," * Grain boundary allotriomorphs are crystals which nucleate at and grow preferentially along matrix grain boundaries. Widmanstaetten side plates, and intragranular plates. Carbide precipitation converted these morphologies into their bainitic equivalents with increasing isothermal reaction time. Conversion took place more rapidly as the reaction temperature was reduced. The replacement of supersaturated ferrite by bainite, however, did not occur uniformly even within individual austenite grains and was noticeably incomplete at higher transformation temperatures, e.g., 625° to 575°C. The ferritic and bainitic forms of a given morphology thus were frequently found to coexist, often inextricably intermixed, in a given specimen. At 625" and 600°C, the conversion of ferrite to bainite was clearly seen to have occurred entirely by the nucleation of carbides at ferrite/ferrite boundaries, as shown in Fig. 1. The nature of the loci at which carbides formed at lower temperatures was often difficult to ascertain with a light microscope, although the alignment in rows of many of the carbides, illustrated in Fig. 2, suggested that nucleation had again occurred at grain boundaries or subboundaries within the ferrite. Application of the electron microscope confirmed this deduction for bainitic structures formed at these temperatures, as shown in Fig. 3. The dense black appearance of bainite formed at very low reaction temperatures in higher carbon steels3 indicates, however, that isolated lattice defects within ferrite crystals prob-

DEFORMATION of cold-rolled fcc metals and alloys produces one or the other of two types of rolling textures, usually referred to as the copper type or the brass type. The pure fcc metals, with the exception of silver, develop the copper-type texture when rolled at room temperature. Silver, brass, and many other alloys develop the brass-type texture. Transition from one texture type to another can also occur. Solute additions to pure copper cause a transition from the copper-type to the brass-type texture.' Varying the deformation temperature also produces texture transitions. Copper rolled at -196°C developed the brass-type texture2 and silver rolled at elevated temperatures, 200°C, developed the copper-type texture.374 The work of Haessner,' Smallman and Green,6 and Hu and coworkers3'4 seems to have established an apparent correlation between the type of rolling texture (and the texture transition) and the stacking-fault probability. Thus materials with low stacking-fault energies are thought to develop the brass-type texture while high stacking-fault energy materials develop the copper-type texture. Mikkola and cohen7 measured by X-ray diffraction techniques the stacking-fault probability, a, in the ordered and disordered fcc alloy Cu3Au. Unexpectedly, ordered specimens showed about twice the stacking-fault probability as the disordered ones. Marcinkowski and Zwe118 also found stacking faults in ordered Cu,Au, but not in the disordered CusAu. More recently, Camanzi and coworkers9 have shown that the intrinsic stacking-fault energy of Cu3Au undergoes a considerable decrease (approximately 100 ergs per sq cm) when passing from the disordered to the ordered phase. In general, deformation reduces order'' but some of our measurements showed that some long-range order still remains in Cu3Au after cold reduction by rolling 80 pct. From the above considerations Cu3Au offers the possibility of studying the texture transition in fcc alloys without varying either the temperature or the composition. If the stacking-fault energy correlation is correct, an initially ordered alloy should develop the brass-type texture during rolling while a disordered alloy should develop the copper-type texture. The present communication describes some initial results of experiments designed to investigate this possibility. The rolling textures of ordered and disordered Cu3Au samples were determined after various amounts of deformation. The ordered sample had an initial long-range-order parameter of S = 1, determined from X-ray diffraction. The grain size of both the ordered and disordered samples was the same, and the initial textures of both were also identical and approximately random. No obvious differences in the deformation textures of the ordered and disordered materials were detected up to 35 pct reduction and the (111) pole figures of Fig. 1 resemble that of pure copper. However, with reduction larger than 35 pct and less than 50 pct, a marked deviation from the copper texture was noted in the ordered material. Studies of the collection of alkali and ammonium halides utilizing vacuum flotation techniques and contact angle measurements show that ionic size controls the flotation of techniquesthese halides with amine salts measurementsas collector. Contact angles of air bubbles on sylvite in saturated brines were withaminemeasured salts asascollector.a function of such variables as collector addition, length of collector chain, and pH of the brine. No contact occurs between halite and an air bubble in brines containing dodecylammonium acetate as collector. LONG-CHAINED aliphatic amine salts have been used for the separation of sylvite (KCl) from halite (NaCl) by flotation.1,2 It is puzzling how these two minerals, which are so similar chemically and crystallographically, can be separated by this method. Gaudin" has postulated that the difference in floatability of halite and sylvite with salts of primary amines depends on ionic size: In the case of amine flotation, the cation would attach itself to the chloride. I have a speculation there, which I cannot prove, that the ammonium group, that is the —NH3 group in the amine, floats potassium chloride because the dimensions of this grour, as it has been measured in other compounds is almost identically the dimensions of the potassium ion, quite different from the sodium ion, and so it fits where potassium had been, in place of it and not attached to it. Apparently, because an aminium ion (RNH3+) is much larger than a sodium ion, it cannot fit into the lattice of halite. Taggart also has speculated that ionic size may control the floatability of sylvite.4 The object of this experimental investigation has been to test this hypothesis and to study what controls the adsorption of cationic collectors at the surface of sylvite. Since collection is to be approached from the viewpoint of ionic size, the ionic radii that are of interest in this work are presented in Table I. The values of the ionic radii of the ions listed in Table I, except NH4+, are those given by Pauling." Several different values for the radius of the ammonium ion have been given, but that of Goldschmidt6 seems to be preferred. The radius of the charged head of a dodecylammonium ion is assumed to be the same as that for the ammonium ion. Little experimental work has been reported in the technical literature concerning the separation of sylvite from halite by flotation. Guyer and Perren studied the separation by flotation of 50 pct binary mixtures of NaCl, KC1, NH,Cl, NaNO3, KNO3, K2SO4, and Na,SO, using either oleic acid or a sodium sul-fonate as collector.' It is possible to measure floatability under actual flotation conditions where all three phases, air- water-mineral, are present by vacuum flotation tests and contact angle measurements.9 Both of these techniques were used in the experimental approach in this paper. Experimental Method and Materials The vacuum flotation tests were run with glass-stoppered pyrex graduated cylinders. Twenty-five ml graduates were used to test the floatability of all salts studied except rubidium and cesium salts. For each test distilled water containing the desired collector concentration was saturated with the salt to be floated. Sufficient salt (—48 mesh) was added to leave about 2 ml of solids in the bottom of the graduate. After the graduate had been agitated several minutes to saturate the solution with air, a vacuum was applied. If the salt were floatable in the collector solution, the gas bubbles attached themselves to the particles, and the particles floated to the surface. In determining the floatability of the expensive Rb and Cs halides, the experiments were run in 10 ml graduates with about 11/2 ml of collector solution initially. Contact angles were measured in the usual manner except that the solutions had to be previously saturated with the mineral to avoid dissolution of the crystal. Solutions for studying contact angles were made by adding the desired amount of collector to a saturated brine, giving the collector concentration in molarity. The mixture was agitated until dissolution of the collector was complete, with the exception of those concentrations greater than about millimolar. At these high concentrations complete dissolution of the collector was impossible. The face of the mineral to be tested was a freshly cleaved crystal of halite or sylvite. The mineral was placed in the brine and conditioned with collector for at least 15 min, which was found to be long enough to obtain a maximum value for the contact angle. The temperature remained constant during each experiment. The experiments were run at 24°C ±2°C. For contact angle measurements, a crystal of halite from Carlsbad, N. M., was used. Several samples of sylvite were used in this work: a crystal of sylvite from Stassfurt, Germany; a crystal from Carlsbad, N. M.; and a crystal of chemically pure potassium chloride. Saturated brines were made from reagent grade chemicals and distilled water.

Some of the basic problems in understanding elec-tromigration in metals are discussed, along with the attempts that are being made to handle them. One such problem is the effect of the electrostatic forces. It is now acknowledged that the momentum exchange with charge carriers plays generally a dominant role in the driving force but the question remains to what extent the electrostatic force may still be effective. The electromigration of interstitial impurities is also an area which presents some intriguing questions. For the substitutional impurity, moving by the vacancy mechanism under the influence of an electric field, the correlation considerations are somewhat more complex than have been previously recognized. Another problem of basic importance in the calculution from first principles is the strength of the "electron friction" force, say for a simple one-band metal. A related problem growing out of the preceding is the prediction of the direction of the "electron wind" force for metals with band structure involving both holes and electrons. THE term electromigration has come to be used to describe the flow of matter in condensed phases carrying high electronic currents such as metals and alloys, whereas one usually reserves the term electrolysis for situations where the current is largely ionic, particularly in the liquid state such as molten salts. It follows that the mass transport number in electromigration is always very small, of the order of 10-7. Studies of electromigration date back some 30 years but the modern period would appear to date from the work of Seith and Wever1 who in the mid 1950's first incorporated markers to display mass motion relative to the lattice and first suggested that the direction of the mass flow was primarily determined by the sign of the charge carriers. Since that time interest in the field has grown steadily and more rapidly recently as certain technological applications became apparent. Chief of these is certainly the deleterious effects that electromigration can cause, even at relatively low temperature, to current-carrying elements in integrated circuitry.2 These phenomena have been the subject of intense study and considerable ingenuity. On the constructive side electromigration has proved a useful tool in the purification of certain metals.3 The interest of this paper is, however, centered more on the basic aspects of the subject than on its technological applications. That high electric currents should give rise to mass flow in metals and that the driving force should be more directly associated with momentum exchange with the charge carriers than with the electrostatic field are ideas that no longer cause surprise or particular interest. The field has matured to the point where the general concepts are widely accepted and continued progress in basic understanding rests on more detailed and quantitative exploration. It is the purpose of this paper to point out what are some of the current problems. As a result, we expect to raise more questions than we answer. The first of these will be the role of electrostatic forces, if any, in electromigration. A second section will deal with the electromigration of interstitials. A third and final section treats with electromigration of substitutional impurities or of the matrix atoms themselves. ELECTROSTATIC DRIVING FORCE In the conceptual treatments of electromigration it has been customary to write the driving force in terms of an effective charge number Z* and to divide it into two terms F = e£Z* = e£[Zel- z(pd/Nd)(N/p)(m*\m*\)] [1] The first of these represents the electrostatic force under immediate consideration in this section and the second and usually dominating term for metals arises from momentum exchange with charge carriers, commonly called the "electron drag" term. As can be seen it is set proportional to the electrons per atom, z, and the ratio of the specific resistivity of the moving entity to the corresponding resistivity per matrix atom. The (m*/Im*I) factor takes into account the fact that the sign of the charge carrier determines the sign of the driving force. The specific resistivity of the moving entity is averaged over its path. In the case of motion of the matrix atoms by vacancies this gives rise to approximately one-half the resistivity at the saddle point since the scattering power of the atom at its equilibrium position bordering the vacancy differs only slightly from that of a normal matrix atom. Although the formulation of the "electron drag" term in Eq. [I] is based on a highly simplified model for electron defect scattering, the essential features implicit in the expression are common to all the theoretical approaches that have so far appeared in the literature.4-6 As for Zel, most treatments of electromigration have included the quantity as the parameter which measures the direct interaction of the electrostatic field with the ion and equated it to the nominal valence of the latter. However, there has been considerable discussion whether this interaction may not be 0 in many cases.6 If the moving ion is always enveloped by the same distribution of shielding charge, then clearly its motion will not involve any work done by the electric field and one can expect there will be no electrostatic force exerted on such a neutral composite. From this point of view the shielding charge around the ion would be said to be complete and hence the entity within the Debye shielding sphere would be unaffected by the electrostatic field per se. There is, however, the prospect that, as the moving ion progresses, new charge comes in to participate in the shielding action

Members of the Institute have already received a special pamphlet descriptive of the United Engineering Society building, and wilt doubtless be interested in the progress that has been made up to date-February 24th-in erecting this home for the engineering profession. The old buildings on lots Nos. 25 to 33 W. 39th St., New York, were,' removed many months ago, but final contracts for the new, building were not let until the summer of 1905. The size of the building is 115 ft. on 39th Street, and 88 ft. in, depth; the height from, the sidewalk to the top of the parapet is 220 feet. The cubic contents of the building from the. bottom of the basement floor, to the top of the roof, including the pent houses, is 2,290,000 cubic feet. The number of light's, in the building will be between 4,000 and 4,500. The air supply for Auditorium and Lecture. Halls will amount to nearly 10.0,000 cu. ft, per minute, and the exhaust. to 90,000 cu. ft. per minute. In excavating for cellar and foundations, the average depth where good rock was. found was 37 ft.-it varied, however,: from 27 to 65 ft., due to an old water-course having run through the center of the lot; this condition, and the presence of soft rock, which rapidly disintegrated when exposed to air and water, made the foundation-work very difficult. As two of the column-footings of the building have to sustain a weight of 3,000,000 11) each, the most substantial foundations are necessary; 13,000 cu. yd. of earth were excavated for the foundation and basement; and 1,600 cu. yd. of concrete were necessary, to build up the footings. In the completed building there will be about 3,500,000 bricks. Owing to the number of auditoriums, and their location, and the placing of the library on the top floor; where allowance will have to be made for the enormous weight of 300,000 books, the structural steel work has been unusually complicated in this building. For some time the writers have been compiling and analyzing statistics of consumption and production of petroleum, its products and related fuels, in order to arrive at a fairly accurate picture of the world-wide situation of the petroleum industry. In production, crude oil, natural gasoline, benzol and alcohol blended with motor fuel have been considered. In consumption not only refined products, but crude consumed as fuel, refinery losses, ships' bunkers and blended fuels have been taken into account to obtain a true balance between supply and demand. Statistics from practically every country and territory have been studied, and where actual figures were not available the estimates have been based on all the data available. The figures in Table 1 indicate that during the last five years the world's production has exceeded demand every year and that the aggregate difference is some 207,150,000 bbl. The supply in the United States exceeded consumption by 111,401,000 bbl. over the same five-year period and in 1931 and 1932 the demand exceeded supply, while outside the United States the excess of output over demand was 95,749,000 bbl. Table 2 combines the excess production in the United States with its favorable balance of exports over imports, showing that the United States has reduced its storage over the five years by about 136,-595,000 bbl., while in Table 3 it is shown that, including its excess of imports from the United States, the rest of the world has added 343,-745,000 bbl. to storage during the period in question, the greatest accumulation coming in 1934. Table 4 shows the world's consumption classified by countries according to the principal products. These tables also indicate that at the end of 1934 the statistical position of the petroleum industry outside the United States was decidedly unstable, a situation that probably will become more acute as a result of the added Iraq production; and that the present favorable statistical position of the industry in the United States, which is partly due to the excess of exports over imports, may be to some extent jeopardized by the unstable situation in the foreign market.

The number of installations of propeller mine fans completed during the years of 1936 and 1937 is evidence of the increasing popularity of the propeller fan with the American mining industry. During the period from 1931 to 1936, there were several different low-pressure, low-efficiency propeller fans available, which filled a definite need in replacing inefficient centrifugal fans operated at comparatively low pressure by means of purchased power. Since 1936, however, the trend toward the propeller fan has greatly increased, as propeller fans are now available practically without pressure limitations and capable of efficiencies high enough to warrant replacement of efficient centrifugal fans in many instances. Few manufacturers of propeller mine fans base their fan-operating characteristics upon similar test methods, primarily because of inadequate facilities for testing in the factory and the need of a test code incorporating a calibrated duct or nozzle that makes possible the testing of large propeller fans quickly, accurately and without prohibitive expense and space requirements. As a result, fan manufacturers have resorted to various methods for testing large propeller fans in the factory, and different yardsticks have produced uncomparable and often inaccurate performance data. It is the purpose of this paper to describe and discuss in detail the test procedure of the Jeffrey Manufacturing Co., which has been proved both accurate and practical. Fig. 1 shows a plan, a side elevation and two end elevations of the test duct with a propeller fan of the exhaust type in place. Testing propeller fans exhausting permits greater accuracy than testing these fans blowing, because in the former uniform flow conditions are more easily established at Pitot tube stations where fan pressure and air-volume measurements are desired. Any residual rotation remaining in the air discharged from a propeller fan blowing into a test duct must be removed before an attempt is made to obtain accurate pressure and volume readings. Although various devices for straightening the air may be placed between the blowing fan and the volume-measuring station without resulting complications, uniform flow so obtained at the pressure-measuring station necessitates corrective calculations to compensate for duct resistance

THE lower cost of producing oil from naturally flowing wells compared with pro-duction costs accruing from artificial lifting methods has stimulated much research, with the joint purpose of extending the natural flowing life of wells and of increas-ing the productivity of small wells. The laboratory investigation described herein was made to determine the effect of a slotted liner on the pressure gradient in the vicinity of the wall of a flowing well. Flow restrictions caused by the liner induce energy losses between the oil-bearing for-mation and the inside of the liner, which may be reduced by improved liner design, and thereby the flow capacity of wells may be increased. These losses have been evalu-ated for rectangular slots of different sizes, and means are suggested for reducing them. The dearth of information concerning the nature of the flow of fluids from uncon-solidated sands through small openings in the walls of pipes-as represented by the flow of oil from an oil sand into a slotted liner-is acknowledged. Although the bene-fits to be realized by operators through the use of optimum liners is just beginning to be recognized generally, Coberly1 in 1937 pointed out that the functioning of screen casing is an important factor in the pro-duction of oil. From his study on the selection of size of oil strings for wells in California, Parks2 concluded, in part, that the perforated section of the oil string de-serves continued study, especially with respect to the selection of perforations. The growing use of gravel packing result-ing from certain research findings lends even more significance to the problem of selecting optimum liners, as the application of these methods usually requires slotted liners or other kinds of perforated liners. The present study was made to obtain further information for the guidance of engineers and operators in selecting slotted liners and to develop a laboratory method that may be used in analyzing possible pressure conditions surrounding most types of perforated casings used in producing oil wells, so that the present inadequate fund of knowledge on this important subject may be expanded.

Because of the broad scope of my topic I will discuss my subject from the point of view of a present status of the metallic materials that are used in structures and will dwell primarily on those structures related to high- performance aerospace systems. Thus, I can best portray the status of these structural materials as related to existing transportation systems, delineating some of the highlights of alloy development, fabrication, and properties obtained. I shall point out what are, in my opinion, the needed solutions to pressing unsolved metallurgical problems connected with certain selected metals: aluminum alloys, beryllium, titanium, steels, superalloys, refractory metals and some metal-matrix composites. Aluminum Alloys For a number of years a series of strong aluminum alloys used for airframes has had an important bearing on the development of minimum- weight, highly efficient structures. Among these alloys are such familiar ones as 2024-T3, 2014-T6, 7075-T6, 7079-T6 and 7178-T6. A review of the development and use of strong aluminum alloys in aircraft structures indicates that before about 25 years ago there was very little application of products other than forgings in the high-strength tempers produced by precipitation heat treating to T6- or T8-type tempers. 1 As stated by Dix in 1944, "There has been a gradual evolution in engineering viewpoint regarding the mechanical characteristics which are required in a structural material suitable for aircraft. Formerly, emphasis was placed on a generous spread between yield and tensile strengths, on elongation, on impact strength and on resistance to corrosion. Aircraft structural engineers still differ widely as to the importance which they attach to these proper tie.” 2 It is fair to say that this evolution is still taking place, that the problem is much the same in 1970 as in 1944 - except that strength levels have advanced some - and the question remains as to how far we can go in that direction. In the meantime, a new group of alloys has received acceptance and widespread use. The first alloy of this group, 7075-T6, was formally introduced by Dix's 1944 paper. THE Institute of Metals Division Lecture in 1936, given by R. F. Mehl, on diffusion in solid metals1, was introduced with the statement that "the phenomena of diffusion are intimately related to many basic prob-lems of the metallic state, but in addition to this the process of diffusion is of first importance practically." In view of the scope of that lecture, it does not seem necessary to review the importance, history or present status of diffusion problems. One aspect of the subject of diffusion that has received little attention became of some immediate importance in the course of a study on segrega-tion. When a solid solution alloy freezes, the familiar mechanism of solidification requires that the first nuclei formed be low in solute con-centration, with a resultant normal segregation or coring effect during freezing. Theoretically, diffusion of solute atoms during solidification should result in a homogeneous solid solution. Actually, of course, it is impossible in most binary alloys to obtain a cooling rate that will permit diffusion to eliminate coring in the freezing dendrites. For a given alloy, the extent of diffusion attained up to the point of final solidification will determine the degree of enrichment in solute atoms of the final liquid phase. The flow of this liquid into dendritic contraction channels and the solute concentration of the liquid seem to be the determining factors as to whether the final gross segregation is normal, inverse or absent. The purpose of the present study of diffusion was to determine to some extent the separate diffusion rates of copper and magnesium into pure aluminum with a view to clarifying previous results on segregation in these alloys; i.e., the fact that under similar freezing conditions alumimum-copper alloys segregate inversely and aluminum-magnesium alloys segre-gate normally. Of concomitant interest were the questions of the homogenization times required for segregated ingots or partially melted, i.e., "burnt," structures, and the solution heat-treatment times required for cast, hardenable aluminum-copper and aluminum-magnesium alloys, for worked and annealed structures, and so forth.

CONSTANTAN is an alloy of copper and nickel that is extensively used, under a number of trade names, as a resistance wire with a low temperature coefficient of resistance, and one of the elements of base-metal thermocouples, iron usually being the other thermoelement, although for low-temperature work copper is also used. Before the war, constantan was imported, in common with many other technical necessities. Since it required considerable time to receive the constantan after it was ordered, fairly large stocks were kept on hand; but after the beginning of the war no more was imported acid the stocks of foreign material were exhausted about the same time that the steel and munition manufacturers began to need great quantities of it for thermocouples for the heat treatment of steel. To meet this demand, the International Nickel Co. began manufacturing constantan that met all the requirements of the users of resistance wire but did not give the same electromotive force against iron as the German material and consequently could not be used with instruments calibrated for a definite e.m.f.-temperature relation. It so happened that all the constantan made had an e.m.f. lower than that necessary to meet the specifications of the Leeds & Northrup Co. for whom this investigation was carried out. If some had been higher and some lower, good wire could have been obtained by a, process of selection, but as it was no wire at all could be procured. To remedy this situation, a thorough investigation was started with the close cooperation of the International Nickel Co. and the Electrical Alloys Co. The specifications to which the constantan had to conform were that it should give an e.m.f. of 47.40 millivolts. against pure iron at 1500° F. (816° C.) with the cold-junction temperature at 0° F., or a proportional e.m.f. at temperatures near 1500° F. The method of checking a wire was as follows: It was first welded to a piece of iron wire; Armco iron was found to be satisfactory but iron with greater than 0.1 per cent. carbon would give a lower e.m.f. against the same piece of constantan than pure

The effects of deformation by wire drawing at 78OK on initially ordered and initially disordered specimens of the alloy Cu3Au were investigated. The resistivity, stored energy, drawing force, and microhardness were measured as functions of strain; microstructural changes were observed. The results are interpreted in terms of the structural imperfections and the changes in atomic configuration resulting from deformation. A few experiments on the effects of room-temperature annealing after deformation at 78°K were made; they suggest vacancy-promoted ordering in disordered alloys. IMD AN investigation of the effects of deformation at room temperature on the alloy Cu3 Au was reported in a recent paper,' which included a review of the literature on the deformation of order-disorder alloys. In general, plastic deformation of ordered alloys reduces the degree of long-range order and causes corresponding changes in their properties. Deformation of disordered alloys changes their properties in a manner characteristic of solid solution alloys; these changes can in part be attributed to the destruction of short-range order. The effects of deformation on solid solution alloys are of two kinds: 1) generation of structural imperfections, which occurs as a result of deformation in any metallic system including pure metals, and 2) changes of atomic configuration, which are characteristic of solid solutions and particularly of order -disorder systems. These two types of effect are not independent of each other and the state of a deformed solid solution alloy is determined in a complex manner by the way in which the structural imperfections cause changes in atomic configuration both during and after deformation.

The application of aviation to mining and petroleum operations, on the basis of economy and attainment, has become a demonstrated fact. According to Dominion Government rccords, 30 Canadian companies engaged in air transportation with northland mining camps, carried 13,000 tons of freight in 1935, and in 1936 carried 16,000 tons. In addition, many mining companies used planes to transport prospectors with canoes, outboard motors, gasoline drums and supplies to remote locations, and one company maintained a plane to take radium-bearing ore from its mine on Great Bear Lake nearly 1000 miles south to the railway at Waterways, Alberta. Heavy pieces of mining machinery weighing 2 tons are being carried by Ford trimotor planes over the Andes, at an altitude of not less than 15,000 feet. At Bulolo, New Guinea, 17,500 tons of disassembled gold-dredging equipment has been flown over inaccessible terrain, while supplies and building materials for a community of 1000 whites have been transported by airplane. A 31/2-ton shaft was carried on one notable trip, while at another time an automobile, 2 tons of rice and a large safe went over the mountains in one plane. Fig. 1 shows an electric generator that was carried by plane to Bulolo. Many large American oil companies operated fleets of planes during 1936, ranging from fast, luxurious air liners for executives to elaborate geological prospecting units, ambulance planes, freight carriers and pipe-line repair crews. According to the U. S. Geological Survey, commercial firms photographed 16,291 square miles during 1935, while the Government compiled from aerial photographs by the Geological Survey in the United States 85,544 square miles. It was found that information could be determined in a fraction of the time required by surface methods. However, sounding a word of caution, a Commonwealth of Australia government report on aerial survey operations had this to say: It is necessary to repeat ad nauseam that aerial photographic survey is in no sense a substitute for geological investigation, though it is a very valuable adjunct thereto, and greatly facilitates and aceeleratcs geological mapping.
