by their overdogmatic picture of geology and their resulting drastic oversimplification and idealization of geologic features. I am in hearty disagreement with the recommendation that geophysics should be done by cooperative work between a geologist and a geophysi-cist. That arrangement would be comparable to doing petrography by having a physicist at the microscope and a geologist sitting by his side. The interpretation of the geological significance of geophysical data can be done efficiently only by a physicist who has become also a good geologist or by a geologist who is also a good geophysicist. Less Well-trained Men The rank and file, composing perhaps two-thirds of the personnel of exploratory geophysics, is not, and should not be, composed of highly trained men. The routine, stereotyped character of the work and the impossibility of promotion of more than a few from these lower ranks even under the best circumstances justify companies in filling the bulk of these rank and file positions with men having only a bachelor's degree at the most. There can be a wide range of training for such positions, although certain lines of study are preferred for certain kinds of work, and different employers have different preferences. For work in gravitational and magnetic prospecting, first preference will be for men having geological training and second for men with civil engineering training. In seismic work, men with geological training are preferred by some employers for computers; physicists, electrical engineers and all whose technical education has covered radio circuits are preferred for the other technical positions. Collegiate training in geophysical prospecting brings no preference and by many employers is given a slightly inferior rating. One large company seldom hires men who have just graduated with a major in geophysical prospecting. This prejudice is based on the reasoning that much of what is learned in college is obsolete or obsolescent, that most of the techniques learned in college will have to be unlearned, because different from those used by the employing company, and that in the long run additional courses in basic physics, mathematics and geology are of more value to a man than the courses on geophysical prospecting. INTRODUCTION THE reaction of carbon in solid solution in a metal with the surface oxide film on many metals may be inferred from thermodynamic calculations for high vacua and high temperature conditions. Holm1 has recently shown that oxide films may be removed from ferrous materials by heating in a vacuum at high temperatures and that carbon is the essential element in the reaction. Considerable work has been described in the literature on the decarburization reaction. Several general references may be noted.2,3,4 However, the nature of the mechanism involved in the decarburization is not well understood. Our interest in this reaction resulted from many attempts to degas and to reduce by pure and dry hydrogen the surface oxides 0n strips of various types of chrome-nickel alloys. Some of the early experiments on the behavior of 13 pct chrome-iron in vacua of the order of 5 X 106 mm and at a temperature of 600°C have been reported.5 These experiments showed a slow reaction with the residual oxygen or water vapor in the system and no reaction with hydrogen. This is in accord with thermodynamic data which would lead to the prediction that it is extremely difficult to maintain a hydrogen atmosphere at 600°C pure enough to reduce Cr203 formed on the surface. The crystal structure of the superficial oxide film formed on 13 pct chrome iron and Nichrome V has been investigated in the thin film range by Gulbransen, Phelps and Hickman,6 and shown to be Cr203. It was surprising to us to note that when a specimen of Nichrome V containing approximately 80 pct nickel and 20 pct chromium was heated to 850°C in a high vacuum, the specimen' lost weight. The rate of weight loss was very temperature sensitive. A study of this reaction in vacua and in a hydrogen atmosphere is the subject of this communication. TYPE REACTIONS Let us consider the various reactions which may occur when a metal is heated in vacua, in a hydrogen atmosphere, or in an oxygen atmosphere. The number and kind of reactions will depend upon the chemical nature, of the metal, its alloying constituents and the location of the alloying constituents. The metals used in this study are chrome-nickel alloys of the heater type. They consist essentially of chromium, nickel and iron, small amounts of carbon, silicon and manganese and traces of zirconium, calcium, aluminum and magnesium. The trace elements are added to improve the lifetime and other characteristics of the alloy when used as a heater. Seven of the more important reactions with which we are going to be concerned here are as follows: [I. SOME days ago a visiting member from Pittsburgh who is an ardent supporter of the Institute remarked: "There are a lot of men who would be members of the Institute if it weren't so expensive. It is not so much the $15 dues as the $20 initiation fee. This makes quite a hurdle, especially for the younger fellows." A little further conversation developed the fact that the member had never learned of the changes in the By-laws regarding initiation fees and dues made by unanimous vote of the Board of Directors last November. As a great many others doubtless are unaware of these changes, the substance of two of the amendments is here repeated. They provide: (1) That the initiation fee for Junior Members (heretofore ten dollars) he abolished. (2) That the age limit for entrance as a Junior Member be increased from 27 years to 33; provided further, that the period during which the dues of a Junior Member are ten dollars shall be a maximum of six years but in no event shall extend beyond his thirty-third birthday. The Junior Member gets the identical privileges enjoyed by his seniors and he likewise assumes the same obligations with the sole exception of the financial payments. This one exception is justified by the fact that the engineers of more mature years, who are established in the profession, - are able and willing to assume a slightly greater financial burden. In effect, it is a small subsidy for the younger men; but these in turn will later enter the group of those that give instead of receive assistance. The practical result is that an engineer under 27 can obtain every privilege and benefit of membership for six years on the payment of only $10 per year without any initiation fee. A man of thirty can do the same for a period of three years. Incidentally, a candidate applying for membership (either as senior or junior) in the next few months need pay dues for the second half of 1935 only. A Junior Member -can be enrolled with an immediate outlay of only $5. The Institute does not seek-members indiscriminately merely to swell the number. These facts are not presented as a "bargain" offer in any sense. The standards for admission are high and are watched zealously. But it frankly-wants to give qualified men who can benefit from membership every encouragement to apply. Naturally, the Institute does not want lack of accurate information regarding initiation fees and -dues to be a stumbling block to any that are eligible and desirous of enrolling. Members are urged to take it upon themselves to clear up misapprehensions on this point, particularly among younger engineers.-Editorial reprinted from MINING AND METALLURGY, May, 1935.

PROBLEMS in expressing, interpreting, and using size-distribution data recur in many phases of mineral dressing; therefore it is desirable that size analyses be expressed in such a form, either numerically or graphically, that comparisons can be made readily. The size distribution of comminuted material is a result of a specific physical operation on the material and therefore should be governed by some definite physical principle, or cause-effect relation. Although this principle has not been discovered, it has been found that the size distribution of comminuted, homogeneous solids may be expressed by relatively simple mathematical equations. Two equations in particular, proposed by Gaudin1 and by Rosin and Rammler,2 respectively, have stood out, both having wide demonstrated ranges of application. The form and the method of application of the two appear almost irreconcilably different on the surface, but, as will be shown, they are asymptotic in the fine sizes when expressed in the same units. This paper gives the results of a further study of the Gaudin and Rosin-Rammler relations, made with the object of developing a form of size-distribution equation that will be more usable and more significant-particularly in comminution studies, both for interpreting the nature of size distribution and for evaluating surface. The work is summarized in the following: I. An equation relating cumulative per cent finer to particle size in the fine sizes is derived from Gaudin's original equation. That equation relates weight per cent retained on one size and through the next larger size in a geometric series of sizes to size (of the retaining screen, for example). 2. Comparisons with Gaudin's equation and with the Rosin-Rammler equation show that the cumulative equation applies to the fine sizes of all size distributions that fit either of these earlier relations, and, furthermore, has some advantages over each. 3. A simple graphical method of surface calculation based on the cumulative-equation plot is evolved and illustrated. 4. Additional confirmation of the cumulative equation was obtained in the more severe test of sizing down to the limit of a sedimentation balance a sample of jaw-crushed quartz. The equation was closely followed over a 20o-fold range in size, from approximately 0.4 mm. (35 mesh) down to 0.0023 mm. (2.3 microns), the lower limit of the size analysis made. There is no indication that the equation will not hold further to well below 2.3 microns. 5. Calculations of the surface produced in the jaw-crushing test mentioned above showed that at least 8o per cent of the total new surface was on particles finer than 35 mesh (about ½ 5 of the crusher setting). The Western World's gold reserves now exceed 23,000 mt (750 million oz), 65% of which exist in South Africa. Although several major mines are reducing production or closing because of depletion of reserves, new mines or expansions of existing mines are coming on-stream which will maintain an annual production of 684 mt (22 million oz) of gold well into the 1990s. These new operations by the South African mining industry represent the largest expansion since the opening of the Witwatersrand gold fields in 1886. Included in three new mines being opened is that of Anglo American Corporation's Elandsrand plant, their fir& new gold venture in South Africa in seventeen years. Current average grade of South African mines is 8.2 g Au per mt (0.24 oz per st); and while the cost of the Elandsrand 135,000 mt (149,000 st) operation, including mine development, was about $314 million, it is estimated that the cost of a comparable operation started today and completed in the mid-1980s would be of the order of $480 million. New mines to exploit low-grade ore bodies are, therefore, likely to be few in number, and further expansion will undoubtedly be in the form of extensions to existkg operations where cash flow can be used to finance development. The authors' first monograph, "Gold and Silver Cyanidation Plant Practice," devoted a section to South African cyanide plant operation; and it is believed that this new volume would not be complete without a description of Elandsrand, South Africa's newest gold plant. The Elandsrand mine is adjacent to Anglo American's Western Deep Levels on the Far West Rand. The decision to go ahead with the development was taken in mid-1974 from the results of exploration drilling carried out over a period of .lo years. Results of 17 bore holes and 68 intersections of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef had indicated a gold-.bearing reef less than one meter thick at a depth of 1,800 to 3,000 meters (5,900 to 9,840 ft). Preliminary studies indicated a mine of 900 km (560 miles) of underground workings would yield 725,000 kg (23. 3 million oz) of gold from 60 million mt (66 million st) of ore to be milled over a period of 34 years. Eventually, when the mine is in full production, the total hoisting capacity will be 300,000 mt per month (331,000 st) for a milling capacity of 225,000 mt per month (248,000 st). The Elandsrand surface facilities have been built on a low range of 0 hills to take maximum advantage of the 10 slope in transporting ore

Discussion of the paper of LAWRENCE ADDICKS, presented at the Salt Lake meet-ing, August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 91, July, 1914, pp. 1671 to 1674. JAMES H. PAYNE, Baltimore, Md. (communication to the Secretary*). -Mr. Addicks's account of the behavior of the nodulizer at Chrome on blast-furnace flue dust leads me to outline what has been done so far upon the application .of the same apparatus to fine sulphide concentrates. As Mr. Addicks states in his paper, the conditions prevailing in the test kiln at Yorktown in the demonstration I made for him upon Chrome material were strongly oxidizing; so much so that the sulphur was roasted down to less than 1 per cent. It is therefore to be expected that the first test made upon sulphide ore a short time after this, in which Ducktown green ore fines were used, did not show very promising results. Although the Ducktown ore contained only 13.52 per cent. of sulphur its gangue was quite fusible, and the intense heat generated by the oxidation of. the extremely fine sulphide particles slagged the mass, bringing about a condition approximating that of a Brückner roaster in distress. During the spring and summer of 1912, the writer kept working upon different schemes to cut clown this slagging. Two successful methods were finally worked 'out embodying opposite principles, one promoting oxidation of the finer particles and the other retarding. their oxidation. In the early part of the present year the writer succeeded in interesting the Braden Copper Co. in nodulizing, with the result that an extensive series of tests were made at Yorktown upon oil-floated concentrates covering quite a wide range in analysis. These tests led to trials in the Chrome rotary on the part of the U. S. Metals Refining Co. of Minerals Separation concentrates which they had in stock, and later to test runs to check up the Yorktown runs on Braden concentrates. The large-scale tests checked up with the Yorktown tests in every way (except fuel consumption, which was, however, correctly predicted), and led to the Braden company's decision to adopt the process at Braden. The fuel consumption upon oil-floated concentrates is not over 6 gal. per ton and in many cases is less. The action in the furnace is independent of the sulphur content, and there is actually less tendency to form nose rings in the Chrome rotary than upon flue dust. It is believed that the improvements entering into the design of the Braden kilns will cut down the nose-ring trouble to where it will no longer be a drawback to the process.

circumstances, would prefer the steel with which they are now familiar, to a specimen that Mr. Sandberg has described as having broken into seventeen pieces under the wheels. After blowing such low manganese steel, it may be coaxed into a rail, but it is a wonder that it holds together so long as it does, with so great a nornber of minute flaws. I would not in any way depreciate chemistry, but I think it should be kept in its proper sphere. Let the chemist look after the quality of pig metal, and apply common sense in the avoiding of extremes, then the most fastidious railroad cannot find fault with the result. PROFESSOR EGLESTON, New YORK City : It is not my place as an engineer to apologize for the chemists, but as no one seems disposed to do so, and as they have had more than their share of criticism, 1 am glad to say that I believe there are chemists in this Institute whose work and word are just as reliable, arid perhaps even more so, than that of the average engineer. But we ought to make a distinction; there are chemists and chemists. With the ordinary commercial chemist, who looks upon the science as so much merohandise, I have not a particle of sympathy; but with the chemist who looks upon his profession as engineers do upon theirs, I have every sympathy. When matiufactorers and engineers go to a chemist and ask him to make an investigation, and scretv him dowu to the lowest point, turning the equivalent of his brains into cents and mills, they ustially get an exact equivalent in poor work for miserable pay, and no one has or should have any sympathy with them, and the under these conditions has no right to ask for any, and no reason to criticise any work that he may get under such circumstances. But I am disposed to think that the chemists who have been replwented and discussed at this meeting do their work conscientiously, and that it is as reliable as that of almost any profession. I believe, however, that this problem of steel rails is being investigated in a wrong direction. I said so at the Pittsburgh meeting, and I think the discussion of this meeting will prove it to all those who have heard it. I think the chemigt is incapable of solving this problem unlees he goes very far into the domain of physical chemistry, so far that it becomes physics and not chemistry; and that the physicist will be the one on whom we must rely in the future for the elucidation of the subject. The chemist may aid the physicist, but it is my decided opinion that we are looking in the wrong place to get the explanation of the phenomena.

[ ] DISCUSSION J. L, SNOEK*-Stress-induced preferential diffusion in cubic body centered metals in the annealed state provides us with a powerful tool for determining the mobility of interstitially solved atoms as well as their location in the lattice and the exact nature of the distortion brought about in the lattice by their presence. Calculations given by D. Polder31 show that the distortion of the lattice, besides being proportional to the applied stress P, is also proportional to [VC, RT + xVCo] where T, V and Co are the temperature, molar volume of the solvent and molar concentration of the solute respectively and x is a constant describing the mutual interaction energy of the dissolved particles. This calculation obviously is no longer valid if x is negative and the abso¬lute value of xVCo surpasses that of RT. The lattice may then be expected to become tetragonal spontaneously. Such a spontaneous tetragonality seems to have been observed by W. Klemm and L, Grimm for the case of oxygen solved in vanadium.32 Measurements of the internal friction in cold worked iron containing carbon or nitrogen should provide us with information on the mobility as well as the preferential location of these particles in the iron lattice in the cold worked state. The work by T'ing-Sui Kê is a valuable contribution to this problem, The data obtained by T'ing Sui Kê and myself on cold worked samples of iron seem to indicate that carbon and nitrogen in these samples are found either in the normal (1/2 , 0, 0) interstices or in a new preferential position created by the cold working. The latter positions in my opinion can hardly by anything else but the edges of the dislocations. The observed larger distances of diffusion might be explained by assuming that the carbon atoms when freed from a certain dislocation by thermal agitation must diffuse over several atom distances before being caught in another dislocation. The theory however needs working out and no doubt will be much more complicated than the one valid for the annealed state. T'ING-SUI KÊ (author's reply)-It is highly encouraging to read the written discussion given by Dr, Snoek who initiated the theory of stress-induced preferential diffusion in cubic body centered metals in the annealed state, Since the presentation of this paper, the author has done more experimental work on this subject which seems to be able to settle several of the points raised by Dr. Snoek. It has been found that such stress-induced preferential diffusion occurs also in the solid solutions of carbon,33 oxygen,34 and nitrogen35 in tantalum which has a body centered cubic structure. A correlation of the bubble point pressure for black oil systems is developed using the standard physical-chemical equations of soiutions. The correlation is based on 158 experimentally measured bubble point pressures of 137 independent systems and is expressed in terins of the usually measured field pnrameters— flash separation gm-oil ratio, rank oil gravity, total gas gravity, and reservoir temperature. The data were obtained on systems produced in Canada, Western and Mid-Continent01 United States, and South America. The average error (algebraic) in the representation is 3.8 per cent, and the maximum error encountered is 14.7 per cent. INTRODUCTION In the absence of experimentally measured properties of reservoir fluids, it is often necessary for the field engineer to make estimates regarding the fluid properties based on the usually measured producing parameters. To aid in these estimations, various correlations have appeared in the literature in recent years. Among the pertinent properties of interest is the bubble point pressure. A correlation for this parameter has been reported by Standing'. However, this correlation was based essentially on California produced crudes and this limitation was pointed out with its presentation. The correlation presented in this paper utilized data on crude oil systems from Canada, Wes- tern and Mid-Continental United States, and South America. CORRELATION DEVELOPMENT The basic assumption used in this development is the same as employed by Standing', There is a wide variety of ways to combine these parameters; however, in this instance the combination was made on the basis of Henry's law2. Accordingly, the relationship proposed is Although Eq. 2 defines an individual system, it is of limited value since H' is a function of gas-phase composition and the system temperature. It was observed that for the systems where the bubble point was measured at several temperatures that the ratio of the bubble point pressures and the ratio of the corresponding absolute temperatures (R) were practically identical. Thus, for correlation purposes the bubble point pressure may be taken as a direct function of the absolute temperature. This relation is valid only for those systems that are not near the critical point. Accordingly, this correlation will be inadequate for systems in the region of the critical point. The solubility of the various hydrocarbons found in the gas phase increases with the molecular weight. Thus, the saturation pressure should be inversely related to the gas gravity. Applying these principles to Eq. 2 and rearranging terms gives: The variables 02 the left side of Eq. 3 were designated as the "hubble point pressure factor". The number of mols of tank oil per barrel is a function of the "mclecular weight" of the tank oil. Although the tank oil is a complex mixture, it was assumed for the purposes of this correlation that a unique molecular weight could be assigned to a given oil. This was designated as the "effective molecular weight", and was related to the oil gravity, This empirical relationship was developed simultaneously with the correlation by assuming values of M,. and working to obtain a smooth curve for both the correlation and the effective molecular weight. The relationship between the oil gravity and the effective molecular weight used in this correlation is shown in Fig. 1. The effective molecular weight is somewhat higher than the molecular weight of the C fraction. The difference between these values is largest for the low-gravity systems. MACHINERY used for size reduction of materials may be divided into three classes-depending upon the manner in which the crushing force is applied. In the first class could be listed the primary crushing units, such as the jaw crusher and gyratory crusher-which crush to coarse sizes by applying pressure intermittently between converging surfaces. In the second class may be listed crushing units, such as the hammer mill, roller mill, and ball mill, which crush principally by grinding or attrition. In the third class is the impact mill which, as the name infers, crushes by impact. The second and third classes generally include machinery used as secondary units for intermediate or fine crushing and grinding. Theory of Crushing by Impact Throw a stone into the air and give it a severe blow while it is momentarily suspended, and it shatters into several pieces. The impact crusher uses this "batting" principle, but carries it one step further. As the material to be reduced enters the crushing chamber, it receives a severe free-air impact blow by hard-hitting beaters suspended from rotor discs. The shattered particles formed are then driven at high velocity against impact blocks, where a further reduction in particle size takes place. The rebounding particles from the impact blocks are again caught by the beaters, and the process repeated until the material is swept out of the open bottom of the crusher. Impact Crushing Versus Attrition Crushing Fig. 1 shows a Hammermill type of attrition crusher. This particular mill has central feed and is reversible. Because of the central feed, an impact section can be designed into it at the feed entrance for preliminary crushing, followed by the cage bar attrition area for final sizing. The material is caught and held in a crushing chamber enclosed by grate bars or perforated plate. It remains in this chamber until it is reduced to particle size small enough to pass through the openings between the bars or in the plate. In this manner the top particle size discharged from the mill is closely controlled. As the swinging hammers pass through the bed of material, the material is broken down by a scrubbing action between hammers and material, material and grate bars, and material against material. This attrition produces a rounded particle shape, accompanied by slivers and a comparatively high percentage of fines. The crusher is especially useful in industries where the material treated is not too abrasive, such as limestone, cement or coal plants. It can be readily understood that from the maintenance standpoint, it is not suitable for hard abrasive materials such as refractories and aluminum oxides. One common type of impactor is shown in Fig. 2. The bottom of this type crusher is entirely open and the passage of the material through the crushing chamber is almost instantaneous. Liberal clearances are maintained between the impact hammers and the anvil type breaker blocks. This eliminates practically all attrition. It is the elimination of attrition that makes the impactor particularly adaptable for reducing hard, abrasive materials. The impactor is also well suited for the reduction of wet or frozen materials, which clog an ordinary Hammermill. Particles broken by impact, when examined under the microscope, show a distinct tendency toward rough, cubical shape, with a minimum of fines. Another important factor in impact crushing is that crushing is accomplished along natural cleavage lines, thus freeing foreign ores or materials.

THE first plans were made in 1930 for the mining by open-pit methods of the low-grade disseminated ore body now known as the Morenci open pit. It was not until 1937, however, that final plans were completed and the decision reached to go ahead with the actual development. Many advances were made in open-pit mining equipment during that period of seven years, therefore the ways and means of attack actually used were very different from those originally contemplated. Diesel-operated bulldozers, big trucks, full-revolving electric shovels and electric churn drills constitute the major equipment finally purchased for this modern stripping operation. Neither the bulldozers nor the big trucks were considered in the early operating plans, for at that time bulldozers had not been used in mining operations and the trucks as yet were undesigned. The full-revolving shovel and the churn drills were not new developments in open-pit equipment, but both had undergone remarkable manufacturing transition, emerging far more efficient and far more dependable than their predecessors. Even the ordinary drilling steel had been fundamentally changed. It was now threaded so that the dulled cutting bits could be detached and replaced, thus eliminating the costly transportation of long bars to the drill shop for resharpening. The decision to use trucks in the preliminary stripping operations was based on the desirability of this type of transportation to economically prepare the pit for rail haulage, coupled with the success that the contractors had had with them on other big excavation jobs. There are at present no plans for the use of trucks beyond the preliminary work, inasmuch as rail haulage will give lower costs after roadbeds and benches are once established. For many years to come, both ore and waste haulage will be over favorable grades. The average length of ore haul between the pit and an assembly yard will be about two miles. From there the crushers will be 1 1/3 miles with a connecting track grade of 0.4 per cent. The upper ore benches of the pit will be reached from the yard by a series of four switchbacks over a ruling grade of 4.0 per cent compensated for curvature. Tracks to the dumps will be on 0.2 per cent grades.

Six intermediate phases occur in the Nb-Zn sysThese phases form by peritectic reactions at 1120°, spectively. The Nb Zn 15 phase appears as the minor phase in the eutectic structure, and the terminal phases remain nearly pure niobium and zinc even at high temperature. Vapor -pressure measurements on the four high-temperature phases (Nb Zn to Nb Zn 3) permitted estimates of the composition limits of these phases and the calculation of approximate values of AFO, AH°, and AS°. 1 HE present study of the constitution of the binary Nb-Zn system was a part of an analysis of the mechanism by which coatings of the Nb-Zn intermediate phases protect niobium against oxidation at high temperature.' Since the primary interest in these phases was in coating service, attention in this study was given principally to the four phases stable at high temperature with only cursory attention to the two low-temperature phases. The solubility studies of niobium in zinc by Martin, Knighton, and Feder2 and the reports from the present study of the Nb-Zn coating represent the only published data pertaining to this system. Previously Hodge, Evans, and Hoskins, in an experimental survey, had noted that niobium was not resistant to attack by molten zinc, but no further observations were reported. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES a) General. The nature of the binary Nb-Zn system precluded the use of more conventional methods of determining the phase equilibria such as thermal analyses of a series of cast alloys. An extrapolation of the liquidus data of Martin, Knighton, and Feder2 to higher temperatures suggested that the solubility of niobium in zinc would remain low in the entire temperature range of interest. The preliminary results of the present studies showed that all of the high-temperature intermediate phases form by peritectic reactions. Thus the sluggish nature of this type of reaction and the steepness of the liquidus indicated that thermal analyses would not yield reliable data. The peritectic reactions, of course, precluded the direct formation of samples of the individual phases from the melt. b) Materials. The niobium and zinc used in the present studies were of high purity. The niobium, in the form of 0.1-in.-diameter rods, contained 30 ppm 0, 30 ppm N, and 15 ppm C. A volunteer class of thirteen students was formed, and the first summer school was held at Drifton, in July and August of that year (1877). The following extract, from an editorial notice in the iden of the organization of the school and the work required of the stiudens. "The students, on reporting to Professor Munroe, were divided into sqoade of two or three men each, and on Monday, July 2d, were aesigned to the qre of skilled miners, selected for the purpose by the mine boss, for instruction in gangway work. THE production and use of copper in the world, like that of other metals, has been of slow growth. In 1880, production in the United States, was only about 60,000,000 lb. and the world's production 325,000,000 lb. Up to 1913 there was a gradual and regular increase in production; in 1912 the production was 1,250,000,000 lb. for the United States and 2,200,-000,000 lb. for the world. At the outbreak of the war there was a slight falling off, both in the United States and elsewhere, but when it was realized that the war was not to be a short one and that copper was one of the most important things for carrying it on, there was a tremendous increase in production every-where. Roughly speaking, the average production for the years 1916, 1917 and 1918 was very close to two billion pounds in the United States and three billion pounds in the world. WAR DEMANDS STIMULATED PRODUCTION Not only did the production of copper in the United States increase, but the same may be said of .all the base metals, particularly of zinc. Much of the zinc used by the Allies came from Australia, but had been smelted in Belgium and Germany, now closed to them. We were called upon to make good this lost supply and in feverish haste built new zinc smelteries and opened new mines. The armistice found the United States with a large surplus of copper on hand, variously estimated at from 800,000,000 to 1,000,000,000 lb. In addition to this surplus in the United States, there were considerable stocks in the hands of the Allies and also immense quantities of unused brass. To. complicate the situa-tion still further, the reclamation of old brass shell cases and other used material was instituted, still further curtailing the demand for new material. This situation was- not appreciated at the time and it was assumed, that the Central Powers would immediately come into the market ? replenish their exhausted stock of copper. During the war Germany had torn down copper trolley wires and roofs, and melted up bronze bells, doors, statues and other copper-bearing material to reclaim this metal for military purposes. But Germany-was unable or at least unwilling immediately to replace her copper substitutes.

A FEW years ago somebody connected with one of those self-constituted bodies of unofficial character, like a Chamber of Commerce, Board of Trade, or State Development Board, started a catch-phrase referring to California as " The Land of Sunshine, Fruit, and Flowers," and the railroad magazines and folders keep it steadily in use, working day and night. Yet it altogether ignores the substance which brought the State into the Union, which peopled it, and which made it famous through-out the world. You ladies and gentlemen who have come from what we here call "the East," have in your own States, no matter which one, sunshine, fruit, and flowers. But your Eastern States, having these things as we do, have not the gold that we do. Therefore, the old designation of "The Golden State," applied to California, should be revived, as being the most distinctive term. It is worthy of remembrance, too, that during the dark days of the civil war this State handed over $172,000,000 in yellow gold, and saved the credit of the nation. Gold-mining has been carried on in California since " The days of old, The days of gold, The days of 49," and it still continues. Since that historic year, and up to the end of 1910, the State has produced, in gold alone, $1,530,214,468. Since 1792 the entire United States production of gold has been $8,261,573,500, so that the single State of California has, in that period, produced within $201,144,564 of one-half of all the gold from Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and the Southern and scattering States. The material described below was made at Furnace No. 2, Longdale, Va., Oct. 28, 1907, during a sudden derangement of working, in the course of which the furnace became entirely bridged over and for some time no solid material whatever descended into the hearth. This caused the hearth to become so completely emptied that, at the tuyere-level, a pricker put in at one tuyere could be seen by looking in at the opposite one. The tap-hole was opened and the iron got out with some difficulty. It ran sluggishly, throwing many sparks, but was not too thick to run into the chill-molds. Naturally, the product was assumed to be white iron, which is almost always produced under similar circumstances; but on removal front the molds it proved to be very strong and tough, although full of blow-holes. Most of these blow-holes bad bright, unoxidized walls. The iron could be drilled by using a "special steel" drill, the drillings curling up similarly to those of steel. An analysis by P. W. Shimer of this unusual product gave: Si, 0.019; P, 0.228; S, 0,39; Mn, 0.042; C, 2.366; and graphite, 0:000 per cent. A cast of iron made just before the disturbance contained P, 0.98, and Mn, 1 per cent. The peculiar product seems to have been decarburized in the hearth and, at the same time, to have lost much phosphorus and manganese, either by the action of the blast in the empty hearth, or, more probably, by. contact with the cinder rich in iron which was formed at the time. Unfortunately, no specimen of the cinder was preserved, so its composition cannot be given. It seems very remarkable that, with the furnace in bad condition, the temperature should be high enough to keep such

The amount of oxygen present in refined copper bears an important relation to the effects of various impurities on physical properties of copper, as well as the effects of reducing gases at higher temperatures. It seems fitting at this time, when the effects of reducing gases on copper are being discussed, to describe methods that have proved satisfactory for the determination of oxygen and sulfur, and to present some results obtained by investigation of these methods in the authors' laboratory. The procedure for the determination of sulfur is closely interrelated with that for oxygen and has, therefore, been included. It was first proposed by Hampe1 that oxides in copper could be accurately determined by the loss in weight sustained by finely divided copper when reduced at red heat in pure hydrogen, or by the weight of water produced. Hampe's method was later modified by Archbutt,2 who established the accuracy of the method and demonstrated that equally accurate results were obtained by noting the loss in weight or by weighing the water formed. The determination of oxygen by heating in carbon monoxide has been proposed by West.3 In our hands this method has given slightly lower results than obtained by heating in hydrogen. Heath4 found that the loss in weight after heating in hydrogen did not represent the true oxygen as cuprous oxide but included also gases derived by the metal from the fuel and refining in the furnace, and any trace of mechanically held moisture. He found, further, that the copper after ignition retained hydrogen equivalent to about 0.01 per cent. Heath proposed to determine the amount of occluded gases by preliminary ignition for 20 min. in pure carbon dioxide—and to correct the error caused by absorbed hydrogen by subsequent ignition and cooling in carbon dioxide, finally replacing this gas with air.

The study of copper alloys of the age-hardening type has received considerable attention, and, among the alloys which the authors have, considered, those containing small amounts of nickel and phosphorus as essential constituents seem especially interesting. Such alloys have attractively great capacity for being hardened and also have relatively high electrical and thermal conductivity in the hardened state. In addition, it has been found that the increase in hardness and strength imparted by aging can be greatly augmented by cold-working, so that excellent combinations of conductivity and strength are obtainnble. In view of the possible importance of the alloys, it was considered desirable to investigate the solubility relationships in the copper-rich portion of the copper-nickel-phosphorus system. This paper present's some of the results obtained in this investigation to date and also gives propertics of typical alloys that appear to be of commercial interest,. Review of literature Copper-nickel System,.—The binary coppcr-nickcl system has long been known to consist of a series of simple solicl solutions, copper and nickel being miscible at all tempcrat'ures and concentrations. This was establisl~cd by Guertler arid Tammannl in 1907 and confirmed by Tafel2 in 1908. Copper-phosphorus System.—The copper phosporus system has been studied by numerous investigators, so that the copper-rich portion is now definitely known. As most recently determined by Lindlief," his system has a cutectic at 8.38 per ccnt P, cuteetic temperature being 714° C. Components of the cutectic are Cu3P and alpha solid solution. Solid solubility of phosphorus in copper, according to Mertz arid Mathewson decreases from a maximum of about 1.75 per cent at 714' C. to about 0.6 per cent at 300' C.

The many complexities arising from our present oil pool proration systems emphasize the need for a suitable standard of property rights. Attempts at conservation and unitization agreements have frequently failed because of the lack of such a standard. The necessity of reducing production to consumption has caused umpires, committees, commissions and other governing bodies to allocate the production of flush fields among the respective owners. The methods of allocation vary widely and conservation of underground reserves is frequently neglected or misused. Critical economic conditions increase, rather than modify, competitive methods. In some fields we have irregular and uneconomically close well spacing. Many operators drill unreasonably large holes, take excessive sand penetrations or leave their wells untubed in order to secure higher potential open-flow tests than their offsets. All of these practices result in economic waste and frequently damage to the pool. Regardless of our agreement with the fundamental principles of proration or unitization, both are actual necessities in many of our present economic situations, and we are in urgent need of a suitable standard of rights to facilitate and simplify their operation. The problems pertinent to unit management are simple and of daily use in many partnership enterprises, but the problems of fair and proper division of production under either proration or unitization are, as yet, subject to controversy. The rights of respective owners must be ascertained and standardized before we can eliminate wasteful practices and still preserve constructive competition in our industry. Valuation of Tracts In a recent unitization conference it was found that each participant had a different basis for calculating the relative values of tracts. Some of these assumptions were as follows: 1. Unrestricted open-flow operation to abandonment. 2. Current proration system to abandonment.
