The experiments described in this publication were inspired by the Bell System's large interest in lead-alloy sheathed cables and by the wide range of fatigue and corroding conditions to which they are sometimes subjected in service. The first experiments consisted of operating specimens of lead + I per cent antimony telephone cable sheath alloy in a fatigue test while they were immersed in water taken from a manhole. Because of many published reports concerning corrosion-fatigue phenomena of various metals and alloys, a reduction in fatigue life was expected(1)2 Instead, however, the fatigue test ran on for many times the normal number of cycles an4 was finally stopped without failure. Because of this, the experiments were broadened to include the effect of many media on the fatigue properties of four lead alloys over a wide range of testing speeds and strains. D. C. Ralston (U. S. Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C.)—Flake mica can be beneficiated by a wider variety of methods than almost any known mineral. However, most of these methods are not recorded. It is therefore a pleasure to find a written record of another application of a new method of beneficiation. The fact that the Humphries spiral gives a concentrate containing the mica flake mixed with the slime and small grit has forced a further separation by screening, in which the finest of the flake will pass through. Fine flake has its uses and if mixed with slimes or clay is recoverable reliably only by flotation. This loss must be charged against the spiral. On the other hand, the new muscovite mica paper recently brought out by General Electric Co., can be made only with grit free flake larger than 50 mesh. It is of interest to learn from the authors whether the washing of the flake on a 50 mesh screen can take the grit content below 1 pct, to meet this new demand. Must another degritting process be used on the flake, like electrostatic treatment of the dried material? H. D. Snedden (The Humphreys Investment Co., Denver)—When recovering mica in the spiral, gangue particles coarser than 16 mesh can be rejected more readily when operating at a high pulp density (35 pct solids) or a low volume rate (—15 gpm). A launder screen as used by Lehigh Coal Co. has proved very satisfactory to partially dewater the mica concentrate and to reject any gangue slimes it may contain. Under certain conditions mica cleaning in the spiral can be improved by reagentizing the spiral feed, the object being to insure wetting of the gangue minerals and to agglomerate or prevent wetting of the mica particles. R. B. Adair (authors' reply)—The grit content of the mica recovered on Humphreys Spirals varies with the fineness of the launder screen used to clean the mica product. Normal practice has been the use of 80 mesh screen, which will produce a mica product of acceptable grit content for most purposes. By using a 50 mesh screen, and increasing the screen area per ton of feed, it is felt by the authors that a mica of 99 pct plus purity could be obtained. This statement would hold only in the case of mica feed which was well de-laminated, and free from "clay balls," (semikaclinized feldspar), which tends to follow the mica through the process.

D. Turnbull—In the opinion of the writer the most interesting result described in this paper is that the distribution of tin with respect to solidification temperature has several fairly well-defined maxima. It appears that each peak may be associated with a catalytic impurity of some rather specific composition. Recently we have obtained some additional evidence in favor of this viewpoint in experiments on the supercooling of lead droplets coated with different surface films. The distribution of lead droplets, ostensibly coated with lead sulphate, with respect to solidification temperature exhibited two distinct and reproducible maxima, one at 20" supercooling and the other at 47". On the other hand, when the droplets were ostensibly coated with halide films, no solidification was perceptible until the aggregate was supercooled more than 55". Upon further cooling a single well-defined peak centering at 60" supercooling was observed. Since the particle size distribution was the same in these two sets of experiments it appears that the most reasonable interpretation of the results is that the sulphate surface film or its reaction products with lead are much more effective in catalyzing the nucleation of lead crystals than are lead halide films. C. S. Smith (authors' reply)—Dr. Turnbull's experiments with lead drops coated with various surface films are most interesting. However, before drawing conclusions from the cooling curves described in the paper as to the existence of a few nucleus types effective at a few different temperatures, one must consider the state of subdivision of the liquid metal. In the A1-Sn alloy used, the tin was not in uniform droplets but tended to collect in three distinct shapes—in long interconnecting prisms along grain edges, in somewhat elongated interdendritic branching pools. and in isolated droplets. A single nucleus will solidify only the metal in contact with it, and the heat evolved will be proportional to the connected volume. A uniform distribution of nuclei of random effectiveness in such an alloy will cause peaks on the specific heat curve on cooling, which correspond to the volume distribution of tin and tell nothing about the nucleus type. In any real alloy both effects will be combined, and it seems impossible at present to distinguish between them. M. B. Bever—The thesis of this interesting paper is supported by a combination of positive and negative evidence. It is now five years since I called the attention of the Institute to the industrial importance of the coal and the iron ores of the Hocking Valley in Southeastern Ohio, and in a pamphlet on the region published soon after, in 1874, endeavored to resume the principal facts then known respecting it, including the observations of the geological survey of Ohio, made and published up to the time by Professors Andrews and Wormley, together with an estimate of the probable future of the region, and its relations to the coal and iron markets of the country. Since that time the labors of the Geological Survey have included a further study of the coal by Prof. Edward Orton, the results of which will be awaited with much interest. I may say from my knowledge of them, that while confirming the general conclusions of his predecessors, he has been enabled to add much to our knowledge as regards the correlation of the various members in different parts of the coal-field; and to show more clearly the positions and the importance of the ore-beds in the Hocking Valley region. The only ore mined in that vicinity previous to 1874, was below what is called the Great Vein or No. VI coal, and to the west of what is known as the Hocking Valley coal-field, and although experiments in a few furnaces in the State had shown that this coal could be used with advantage in iron-smelting there was not a single blast furnace within the field. My observations at that time, however, impressed me with the abundance of iron ore, not only below but above this important coal seam, and I then ventured to express the opinion that this region, from its cheap and easily mined smelting-coal, its native ores and limestones, and its geographical position and relations to the great markets of the West, and to the supply of rich iron-ores from Lake Superior, was destined at no distant time to become a great metallurgical centre, where iron could be made more cheaply than at any other equally accessible point in the country. The object of the present communication is to report progress, and to state how far my observations made in the region 1st month have justified the predictions of 1874. The five years which have elapsed have been, as all know, most unfavorable to the iron trade, and especially to new enterprises in untried regions, yet they have not passed without important industrial developments in the Hocking Valley, where not less than thirteen blast furnaces have been erected

A method for the interpretation of temperature curves recorded in gas producing wells is described. One essen-tial feature of the method is a simple graphical construction which conveniently reflects the amount of gas flowing from a given producing formation. This method, applied in conjunction with the Induction Log and radioactivity logs, is valuable to determine the points of entry of gas and to estimate the over-all thickness of the producing zones and their respective contributions to the total production. The method in particular is helpful in evaluating the effect of fracturing operations. An outstanding result of the application of the method is to bring to the light the relative importance of sand-shale interfaces in the production of gas. The paper is illustrated with field examp1es. INTRODUCTION The electrical logging tools involving conventional systems are not applied in wells which do not contain water base mud (empty holes, or wells filled with oil base mud), because of the absence of electrical connection between the electrodes and the surrounding formations. It is, therefore, common practice in this case to use other methods which do not require the presence of a conductive fluid in the borehole: resistivity log with scratcher electrodes, Induction Log, radioactivity logs, temperature log. . . . Such conditions are encountered in some regions, as the San Juan Basin, N. Mex., where a technique of drilling gas wells, using gas as a drilling fluid, has been introduced in the last two years. By the middle of 1953, an appropriate method for the logging of these wells was devised on the basis of field tests and of theoretical studies. It is the purpose of the present paper to give a description of this method. In these wells the logging operations are performed during the process of gas production, so that the temperatures in the boreholes are strongly affected by the cooling due to the expansion of the gas. On the other hand, a special thermometer, with a high sensivity and a short time constant, has been recently made available, which has enabled much more detailed and accurate recordings of the borehole temperatures than with the conventional instruments. As a result of these two circumstances, the temperature log constitutes the essential element of the method, in making possible the detection of the gas producing zones, the definition of their boundaries, and the estimation of the respective contributions of each separate zone to the total production. The method also involves the radioactivity and Induction Logs, as auxiliary documents. These logs in the present instance are helpful in the determination of the reservoirs. However, the information they give in this respect is limited. This comes from the fact that, due to the absence of the MicroLog and/or MicroLaterolog and of the SP log, the estimation of formation factors and connate water salinities is somewhat conjectural. Furthermore, little help is obtained from the Neutron log for the evaluation of porosity and of formation factor because the variations of gas saturation affect the Neutron log in a way similar to the variations of porosity. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of variables in equipment and procedure on tube test results. This information was then to be used to formulate specifications, preferably within the practical ranges of existing machines, for test procedures capable of yielding precise and meaningful data concerning the magnetic separation of any magnetite ore, regardless of its origin. A survey of current practice was conducted among laboratories using the Davis tube test. Many tube tests were performed to experimentally evaluate the variables most likely to affect test results. A simple method was then sought for adequately interpreting tube test results. The Davis magnetic tube concentrator is a laboratory machine designed to separate a small sample of pulverized magnetic iron ore into magnetic and non-magnetic fractions. It was developed in 1921 by mechanization of a test previously performed manually No significant changes have been made in the design of the apparatus since that time. The Davis magnetic tube test continues to serve as a practical basis for judging the amenability of an ore to magnetic separation and for controlling magnetic separation plant operations. The apparatus consists of an inclined cylindrical glass tube supported adjacent to closely spaced pointed poles of a powerful C-magnet. (Fig. 1). To conduct a tube test, a sample of suitably prepared ore is poured into the water-filled tube. With wash water flowing through, the tube is oscillated to gradually reject the non-magnetic and weakly magnetic ore particles until the desired degree of separation is attained. Both the magnetic concentrate and the tailings may be recovered for examination. MAGNETIC SEPARATION BY THE DAVIS TUBE Mechanical separation of a specified mineral component from an ore usually requires comminution to fine sizes for sufficient liberation. Some distinguish- ing property of the mineral is then exploited to sort the desired mineral particles from the gangue particles. The magnetic separation of iron ores is based on the fact that magnetite, Fe3O4, is strongly attracted by a magnetic field while the gangue minerals are not. Maghemite, ?-Fe2O3, which may occur in certain chemically processed ores, responds similarly to magnetite. The magnetic process is practical only when the loss of iron in the form of relatively nonmagnetic hematite, Fe2O3, goethite, Fe2O3.nH2O, or other iron mineral can be tolerated. In the Davis magnetic tube concentrator, magnetic attraction holds magnetically susceptible particles in a magnetic field. Forces due to gravity, inertia, and fluid-solid friction tend to remove the less susceptible particles from the field. The probability that a given middling particle will be rejected from the tube in a given period of time is an inverse function of its magnetite content, with some modification due to particle size and mineral specific gravities. The net result is that ore particles tend to be rejected in their order of increasing magnetite content, while the retained portion or magnetic concentrate increases in grade continuously during the process. Measurement of radioactivity of rocks and ores has developed into a complete method of geophysical exploration. The problem falls into three natural categories: (1) surface radiation measurement in the field and underground; (2) radioactivity logging of drillholes; and (3) laboratory analysis of samples. Portable counters are used in the field for tracing radioactive formations and for quanti tative estimates of radioactive content of surface rock. Wartime advances in battery design make it possible to construct small precision counters that can be carried easily. Even the smallest conventional diamond drillholes can be logged, and actual content of the radioactive element can be measured. The exact grade of very thin active layers or veins can be estimated only approximately. Samples may be analyzed for their alpha, beta or gamma activity, and beta assaying is the best suited to rapid routine operation. Simple calibration with standard samples is sufficient for rough work, but a density correction is necessary when greater precision is required. Samples with high emanating power should be fixed and stored for three weeks to reestablish the radium-radon equilibrium prior to precision assaying. Carno-tite can be fixed by sintering or molding with plastics. Among the important new developments, a low-voltage Geiger tube has been 'designed recently, and crystal scintillation counters hold great promise for high-efficiency gamma-ray measurement. Introduction During the last few years we have witnessed an unprecedented rise in the demand for radioactive minerals, coming as a direct consequence of the discovery of nuclear fission and subsequent developments, the full impact of which is by no means in sight even now. It remains certain, however, that radioactive minerals, and especially those which can be used as ores of uranium and thorium, will continue to be of great interest not only to the prospector and mine operator but also to the various inspection parties envisioned by most of the schemes advanced for the control of nuclear energy on a world-wide basis. It is clear, therefore, that the measurement of radioactivity in rocks in the field as well as in samples in the laboratory has become a method of geophysical exploration of some importance. If we consider the recent technological advances in the general fields of nuclear physics and electronics it seems proper to review the present status of the methods and procedures of radiological exploration. General Considerations Equilibrium If we take a fixed amount of uranium that has just been purified, some of it will immediately start decaying into its first daughter element which in turn decays into its own daughter and so on down the line until the last daughter is reached—a stable isotope of lead. The rate at which a radioactive element decays is frequently expressed as the half-life, which is the length of time required for the decay of half the atoms in a given amount. The half-life is inversely proportional to the decay constanl X which is defined as the number of atoms which decay in one unit of time divided by

The predominant tonnage use of titanium is as a white pigment, in the form of rutile or anatase, which are allotropic modifications of titanium dioxide. Because of its whiteness, high refractive index and resulting light scattering ability, titanium dioxide is unequaled as a white pigment for paints, paper, rubber, and a wide variety of other materials. Consumption of titanium dioxide pigments for these uses has been rising steadily for many years, United States consumption in 1956 amounting to about 486,000 tons, worth $250,000,000. Production was off a little in 1957 and 1958. An outstanding development in the titanium field in recent years is the expansion of titanium metal production. Virtually nonexistent before 1948, United States production of pure titanium metal sponge reached a high in 1957 of about 17,200 tons, worth about $77,000,000. United States titanium sponge metal production in 1958 was cut back to about 4,600 tons because of reductions in military requirements. Another major use of titanium, in the form of the mineral, rutile, is for welding rod coatings. United States consumption of rutile for this purpose in 1958 amounted to about 11,000 tons, worth $1,100,000. Titanium-Bearing Minerals Although several minerals contain titanium as a major constituent, only a few of these occur in sufficient quantities and concentrations to be of commercial importance. These are ilmenite (FeTiO3), rutile (TiO2), and alteration products of ilmenite which have been referred to as weathered ilmenite, leucoxene, or arizonite. The other polymorphs of titanium dioxide, brookite and anatase, occur in a few deposits, of which only one has been of even minor importance. Considerable concentrations of titanite or sphene (CaTiSiO5) and perovskite (CaTiO3) are known, but do not compete with ilmenite and rutile deposits in grade or size. Rutile is very widely distributed as an accessory mineral in most rocks, but large deposits of commercial importance are rare. A few rock deposits have been worked for rutile but only one, in Virginia, is in operation (1959). Development of one in Mexico was discontinued recently. At present, the main sources of rutile are the beach and dune sands of Australia and Florida. A major use of rutile is for the manufacture of titanium tetrachloride, which is the intermediate compound universally used in titanium metal manufacture. Another main use of rutile is for welding rod coatings. Although the whiteness and brightness of titanium dioxide pigment is due to the high refractive index of rutile or anatase, natural rutile is too impure to be used directly as a white pigment, is too expensive to use for manufacturing pure oxide pigment, and is too scarce to provide the required tonnages. Instead, the cheaper, more abundant, mixed oxide of iron and titanium, ilmenite, which is readily decomposed by sulfuric acid, is used for manufacture of rutile and anatase pigments. Ilmenite is mined from both rock and sand deposits. Rock deposits contain ilmenite in massive or heavily disseminated form along with magnetite or hematite and are almost invariably associated with anorthositic and gabbroic rocks. Feldspars, the most abundant minerals of the igneous rocks, occur in numerous forms and mixtures. The feldspars of commercial significance are found in widely distributed pegmatites as large crystals usually free of iron-bearing impurities and thus suitable for hand-cobbing, and also in larger bodies where the ore contains various types of feldspar intermingled with quartz and relatively free of iron-bearing impurities, or at least readily unlocked from impurities present at relatively coarse mesh. The latter type of ore includes some pegmatites, and the "alaskite" bodies so common in the Spruce Pine district of North Carolina. On the west coast of the US and in Oklahoma there is-or has been-commercial recovery of natural feldspathic sand as a source of alumina in glass and ceramics. "Aplite" in commercial terminology is a light-colored igneous rock with a granitic composition and a fine sugary texture, often banded with readily removable iron impurities. Only one area in Virginia produces aplite for the glass industry; it is located near Montpelier in Hanover County. According to Deer et al. (1966) the word feldspar derives from the Swedish feldt or jolt (field) and "spath:" chunks of rock appearing in tilled ground overlying granite. Castle and Gillson (1960) indicate a Germanic origin, citing "spat," which is said to refer to any transparent or translucent material which is readily cleavable. The term "spar" has in the past been applied to minerals other than feldspar, such as barite, calcite, and fluorite. It is correct to call the latter "fluorspar." There is a true barium feldspar, but it is rare and of no present economic importance. What is recognized as feldspar or "spar" by present producers and consumers consists of three silicate minerals which, if pure, would have the formulas KA1Si3O8 (microcline or orthoclase), NaAlSi3O8 (albite), and CaAl2Si2O8 (anorthite). These are almost never found in pure form in nature, but occur together in great abundance in a three-component system. A considerable number of different combined ratios of these three exists, with the exception that isomorphism between potassium spar and calcium spar is very limited. User specifications for feldspar products are largely built around the prevalent naturally occurring ratios. Passages following will refer to "K-spar," "Naspar," or "Ca-spar." Nomenclature and Descriptive Terms Relating to both the mineralogy and the economics of feldspar are certain terms whose coverage it is useful to specify. Commercially, aplite is a feldspathic rock mined and beneficiated in one location in Virginia, in which both titanium and feldspar minerals are present-the latter now being the major, if not the only, economic product. Technically, the term aplite when applied to this rock is of questionable accuracy. But, in light of accepted commercial usage, the term will be here used to designate it. Regarding the Virginia rock, Ross (1941) is cited. Alaskite is another term requiring understanding if not precise use. A distinctive rock type customarily called by this name is found near Spruce Pine, Mitchell County, North Carolina. An important major feldspar source, it contains somewhat higher levels of plagioclase feldspar and quartz than alaskite as defined in the Glossary of Geology and Related Sciences, which states that `orthoclase, microcline, and subordinate quartz are the principal

Essentially all of the barite produced in Georgia has come from the Carters-ville district in the northwest part of the state. The earliest recorded shipment of ore, 60 tons, was made in 1894.' With the exception of the four-year period 1931 to 1934, the separate yearly output has been recorded and published since 1915, whereas the total yearly output of the United States has been published since 1880. The separately recorded production of Georgia (Cartersville) through 1947 is 2,232,544 short tons valued at $14,900,746,2 but unpublished data on the period 1931 to 1934, plus the estimated unrecorded output prior to 1915, make the actual total about 2,400,000 short tons. This is about 21 pct of the total production of the United States, which, through 1947, is 11,328,440 short tons valued at $71,683,386.2 The barite-producing part of the Cartersville district is relatively small, having from north to south a length of 4.5 miles, and a width of 2 miles. This small area, containing 35 barite mines, is the source of practically all of the barite produced in the state. The area is hilly, and has a total relief of 500 ft. The west-flowing Etowah River crosses the middle of the area, and is an unfailing source of water for operations on properties near its course. Opencut mining is carried on during the entire year, but is hampered by rain in the winter and early spring. Three railroads, two U.S. highways, and a network of graded roads provide access to and within the district, as well as excellent shipping facilities for ore and supplies. In addition to the barite, the district contains deposits of manganese, brown iron, ocher, umber, and specular hematite. Geologic Setting The area containing the barite deposits is underlain by Lower Cambrian rocks and their weathered residua. These rocks are grouped in three formations; in ascending order, these are the Weisner, the Shady, and the Rome. The Weisner formation consists mainly of finely micaceous metashale containing many random beds of quartzite, a few beds of conglomerate and metasiltstone, and beds of crystalline limestone that is apparently scarce. The formation is more than 1000 ft thick, and the base is not exposed. On account of their resistance to weathering, the rocks of the Weisner formation have sustained the higher elevations and therefore crop out on the ridges that characterize the area. Nearly all of these ridges are underlain by asymmetric anticlinal folds, and conversely the intervening valleys are underlain by synclinal folds. A diagrammatic section, showing typical mode of exposure of the Weisner rocks and their relation to overlying formations, in the limb of a fold, is shown in Fig 1. The Shady formation here consists of a lithologically distinctive series of variably siliceous specular hematite beds and thin beds of dolomite, which in places contain abundant fossils. In the zone of weathering, the dolomite has been leached and most of the hematite hydrated to ocherous and umber-ous clays, hut bedding planes in these weathered materials are commonly well preserved with or without distortion effected by slumping. Introduction The success of preventive methods for the mitigation of coal mine drainage formation will require a marriage of the minimization of initial coal mine drainage formation, the minimization of toxic fluid formation after toxic material disposal, the minimization of the mobilization and transpor¬tation of formed toxic fluids, and the maximization of the rate of diultion and attenuation of the formed toxic fluids. This paper contributes to the understanding of factors af¬fecting mobilization and dilution and attenuation of formed toxic fluids. When water containing a salt content different from in situ pore water in the soil is passed through a body of soil, the concentration of salts in the outflow will gradually change composition in a manner that depends on the kinds of hydraulic processes that occur in the soil. These processes are molecular diffusion, lateral dispersion, longitudinal dispersion, chemical reactions or exchange, physical adsorp¬tion, and biological retardation. This note considers only the first three processes. These three microscopic processes can be analyzed statistically on a probability basis. Such results, confirmed experimentally, indicate that a tracer introduced instantaneously as a point source will tend to form a Gaussian normal distribution as it moves downstream (Todd, 1964). Dilution During Flow The closed-form soltuion for pulse or instantaneous injec¬tion of a tracer during confined flow in a homogeneous porous medium shows that the maximum tracer concen¬tration at a point in space, x, after the time interval, t*, is given by [ ] where Aa is the effective flow cross-sectional area; A is the column cross-sectional area; a is soil porosity; M is mass of the injected tracer; C is concentration of the tracer in the permeating fluid and is a function of x and t*; D is the longitudinal dispersion coefficient; and va is the interstitial fluid velocity (Klotz and Moser, 1974). Therefore, the following conclusion can be made: • For a medium with a constant longitudinal dispersion coefficient, D, a constant soil porosity, a, a constant cross¬sectional area, A, and a fixed mass of injected tracer, M, Cmax will decrease as the time of peak outflow concen¬tration t* increases. • For a medium with a constant longitudinal dispersion coefficient, D, a constant soil porosity, a, a constant cross¬sectional area, A, a fixed mass of injected tracer, M, and a constant interstitial fluid velocity, va Cmax will decrease as the distance of travel, x, increases. • For a medium of constant cross sectional area, A, con¬stant soil porosity, a, a constant mass of injected tracer, M, and a fixed distance of travel, x, Cmax will decrease as D/va increases. Klotz and Moser (1974) concluded that D is about proportional to no.3 where r) is the kinematic viscosity; D is about proportional to a-3 where a is soil porosity; D in¬creases with increasing grain size; D increases as grains become less spherical; D increases with greater grain rough¬ness and angularity; D increases with increasing uniformity coefficient; and D is significantly affected by grain size and uniformity coefficient. The remaining parameters are not significant. Numerical Simulation Studies Numerical simulation studies were used to investigate the nature of flow and the optimum length of a toxic package within a saturated porous medium of fixed dimensions and configuration (Fig. 1). The width and position of the package was maintained constant (Phelps et al., 1981). Results indicate that if the package extends throughout the length of the model, the flow is vertically downward and

Johnson, Jr., The innovation of a special meeting under the auspices of the Iron and Steel Committee was well justified, if we accept as a criterion the number of papers presented at the meeting held on Oct. 16 and 17 in New York and the attendance at that meeting. Twenty-four papers were read, and most of these were widely discussed orally, while doubtless the written discussions will be even larger in extent. Discussions will be received up to Dec. 1, 1913. The attendance at the meeting of 106 members and 75 guests is an evidence of the wide anti growing interest in the Institute of men interested chiefly in iron and steel. It is especially interesting to note this large attendance at a meeting where very little of a social nature was introduced into the program. An informal dinner for the men at the Engineers' Club closed the meeting. At this dinner were present about 70 members and guests. One of the Vice-Chairmen and the Secretary of the new Committee on Petroleum and Gas told of the important plans in prospect of that Committee. Brief impromptu speeches by a considerable number of the members and guests were enjoyed. Professor Marburg reiterated his previous assertion that he believed that the Institute and the American Society for Testing Materials, as well as some of the other technical societies, were all fighting for one good cause; that there was room in the field for all of these societies with their various points of view; and that they should march shoulder to shoulder. The success of this dinner was due largely to the efforts of Mr. Johnson who had the affair in charge.

ASHBEL WELCH, LAMBERTVILLE, N. J.: Dr. Dudley has given the wear of steel rails under four different conditions. He arrives at the conclusion that the softer rails, or those that from their composition ought to be softer, wear better than the harder. But there is another condition which has an important bearing on the subject, and, should not be overlooked,-the weight on a wheel. With the lighter weights of the past, the softer rails may have worn best; with the heavier weights of the future, the harder may wear best. Weights will probably be increased up to the capacity of steel to bear; then doubtless the harder steel will wear best. A leaden rail with ten pounds on a wheel might carry millions of tons, but with one hundred pounds on a wheel, it would be destroyed by a few thousand tons. So in the days of iron rails, my experience was that the softer rails under light machinery stood better than some of the harder; but under heavy machinery the softer were much the most rapidly destroyed. His doubtless the same with steel. The varying physical character and large extent of the Broken Hill lode necesarily involve the employment of a variety of underground methods. The lode had its origin in an extensive fault plane traversing metamorphosed schists conformably, as a rule, with their beds of stratification. The underground waters carrying minerals in solution deposited their contents in the original cavities formed by the faulting action, and in the enlargements of these cavities due to dynamic forces brought to bear on the rocks, more especially on the hanging-wall side of the fault. This deposition was supplemented by metasomatic replacement of a portion of the original rock contents by the argentiferous sulphides of lead and zinc which form the staple products of the district. Although the orebody is practically continuous throughout the mines, its width varies greatly, ranging from a few feet to about 350 ft. The widest portions occur in conjunction with huge folds in the inclosing country rock, almost exclusively on the hanging-wall side. The ore in these folds pitches to the south in the southern half of the field, and to the north in the northern half; there are, however, undulations in these ore channels evidently due to compression of the rocks in the direction of the channels. In the earlier days, before the orebodies had been opened up, vertical cross-sections across these bulges in the hanging wall gave the lode the appearance of the "saddle formation," so well exemplified at Bendigo in Victoria; but subsequent development of the ore channels has long since proved that the formations in the two districts are entirely different. The depth reached by the zone of complete oxidation of the sulphides varies from about 259 to 550 ft, from the original outcrop, while partial oxidation extends in places below the 1,000-ft. level. The result of oxidizing influences has been the production of ore of every grade of cohesive-ness, from that of dry sand to that of hard compact rock. The methods of mining followed in this field, and even in individual mines, are varied in accordance with the character of the ore. REINARTZ, Middletown, Ohio.-Mr. Carl Peirce has presented a valuable paper on a subject that has been very widely discussed in recent years, especially since the demand for high finish, deep drawing and other grades of sheet steel in the lower carbon ranges has become an important factor in the steel business. Steel of this analysis has been produced for many years, but the product for which it was made did not require the extra care in the steel plant that it does today. It must now be worked down into thin sheets for special purposes and undergo many severe finishing processes both in the steel mill and in the fabricating plants. Mr. Peirce's paper has outlined in a concise and logical manner the steps which must be taken in manufacturing such steels. The secret of successs is attention to details of well known steel practices. I agree with him that quality steels of this class cannot normally be made out of inferior raw materials. Scrap should be clean and if possible not too variable in analysis. Galvanized scrap or babbit are particularly objectionable. Scrap should be in such physical condition that undue delays are not encountered in charging the furnace. Limestone should preferably contain over 95 per cent. available calcium carbonate, and be free from clay or other foreign substances. Almost universal practice shows that 10 per cent. limestone is required for proper slag volumes to protect the metal from over oxidation. The use of 8 per cent. limestone makes the operation less fool-proof.

DURING July 1941, a study was initiated at the Boulder City Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines on proposed methods for the production of magnesium metal. The major emphasis was placed upon development of a process that required minimum reliance upon the sale or utilization of by-products to meet economic competition from processes already in operation. It was felt that only through the development of such a process could the nation's vast resources of dolomite and low-grade magnesite that are contiguous to large blocks of firm power be properly utilized. During the course of exploratory tests on electrolytic and electrothermic processes, it was noted that fused magnesium chloride would dissolve appreciable quantities of magnesium oxide in the presence of small amounts of boric oxide. The use of such a solution in an electrolytic cell employing a graphite anode and a steel cathode caused the deposition of magnesium at the cathode and the evolution of carbon oxides at the anode with minimal amounts of chlorine The original results were sufficiently encouraging to justify further investigation on an enlarged scale, since the process seemed to present advantages over other proposed processes 1.2 for the direct use of magnesium oxide in a fused chloride electrolyte. When work on a larger scale was initiated it was found that the addition of boric oxide to the electrolyte resulted in dispersion of metal and constantly decreasing current efficiency. However, by this time solubility studies had shown that magnesium oxide was sufficiently soluble in magnesium chloride melts containing no boric oxide to effect the same anode reactions, and development work was continued. Over two years of development work have been carried out, and considerable work remains to be done. It is desired to emphasize the fact that many of the difficulties met require a long period of continuous operation before they become serious enough to affect operation of the cell. SILICON-iron .under certain conditions of processing and annealing will form a cube texture. The occurrence of this texture in thin tapes of silicon iron was first reported by Assmus, Detert, and Ibe.' They concluded that the cube texture in their material formed by a secondary re crystallization process. In the course of present investigations on the development of the cube texture and the mechanisms involved in its formation by secondary re-crystallization it was found that under certain conditions the cube texture was replaced by a cube-on-edge or (110) [001] texture. We call this phenomenon tertiary re crystallization since it follows secondary recrystallization. The secondary recrystallization occurs after primary recrystallization and a substantial amount of normal grain growth. It is the purpose of this paper to describe briefly the occurrence of tertiary recrystallization and the structure and texture prior to and after tertiary recrystallization. The primary and secondary recrystallization structures and textures are the subject of another study and will be referred to briefly in the discussion of results. Evidence will be presented for the view that the dominant driving force for tertiary recrystallization is derived from the surface free energy which depends on the crystallographic planes presented to the gas-metal interface. In the absence of boundary restraining forces (dispersed phases, thermal grooves, and so forth) a sufficiently large difference in surface free energy across a grain boundary would produce boundary migration away from the center of curvature of the boundary intersection line in the surface of the sample according to risher.2 Therefore, particular attention was paid to observation of the direction of motion of these surface boundary lines. Furthermore, measurements of the actual boundary curvatures could be used to estimate the driving force supplied by surface free energy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Samples were prepared by hot and cold-rolling vacuum-melted ingots of iron containing 3 pct Si to strips 0.012 and 0.006 in. thick. The ingots contained less than 0.005 wt pct impurities. The rolled strips were cut into samples approximately 1 in. wide by 3 in. long and were electropolished to remove surface imperfections. In 1913, the Tiro General mine, at Charcas, S.L.P., Mexico, which had been making from 125 to 150 gal. of water per min., was allowed to become flooded, after all the pumps had been removed, and in 1918 the problem of unwatering it came up for solution. There are two vertical shafts, the Tiro General, 1390 ft., and the San Fernando, 1225 ft. in depth, with five connecting levels between them. The San Fernando shaft had been partly retimbered, while the Tiro General had been newly timbered from the collar to 1090 ft. in depth. It had been possible to place guides in only one compartment of the Tiro General, from the collar to the seventh or 850-ft. level, to which it was necessary to lower the water before station pumps could be installed. Soundings indicated that compartments in the Tiro General were open to 1082 and 428 ft., and in the San Fernando shaft to 471, 488, and 586 ft. The water had risen to a point 140 ft. below the collar of the Tiro General shaft.. Pumping Equipment The steam plant at the Tiro General shaft includes one 300-hp., one 150-hp. and one 100-hp. Erie City water-tube boiler, and two 160-hp. Heine water-tube boilers. All but one of these boilers were supposed to be in good shape, but it was soon discovered that six years of idleness in a climate that is foggy for several months of the year had left them in poor condition. The compressed-air plant comprises one Nordberg cross-compound compressor with piston displacement of approximately 2500 cu. ft.of free air compressed to 96 Ib. per sq. in.; and another Nordberg cross-compound with piston displacement of 1235 cu. ft. of free air, to the same pressure. The main pump station is on the seventh level where had been installed a Prescott pot-valve plunger pump with capacity of 200 gal. per min.; also a Gould triplex plunger pump with capacity of 135 gal. per min., driven by a 6 1/2 by 10 by 12 in. steam engine. From the lower levels, the water had been raised to the seventh level by small station pumps and sinking pumps.

The total oil production from Colombia during 1939 amounted to 23,774,151 bbl., constituting a new high record. Of this amount the Tropical Oil Co. produced 22,374,151 bbl. from its De Mares concession and the Colombian Petroleum Co. produced 1,400,000 bbl. from its Barco concession beyond the eastern Andes. The Socony Vacuum Oil Co. produced a small amount of crude from its Las Monas wells north of the Sogamoso River in the Magdalena Valley for consumption on its own property, but this is not included in the figures given above. The South American Gulf Oil Co. provided the outstanding development in the country by the completion, late in the year, of its 12-in. pipe line from the Colombian Petroleum Company's Barco concession to the coast at Covenas. This was a notable accomplishment, achieved in the face of tremendous natural obstacles. With the completion of this line there are now two crude-oil outlets from the interior of Colombia to the coast, the other being the Andian National Corporation's line down the Magdalena Valley from Barranca Bermeja. The Barco property becomes the second major producing area in Colombia. The acquisition of prospectivc oil lands continued at about the same level as during the prcvious year. Most of the lands taken up or applied for had their subsurface rights vested in the National Government. Relatively little interest was taken in the leasing of privately owned lands. Tropical surrendered its Putana concession on the Sogamoso River after finding it to he nonproductive. The status of applications for National lands that had been accepbed or on which concession contracts had been awarded at the end of the year is shown in Table 3. In the Magdalena Valley wildcat drilling in the search of new fields was conducted to the east of Puerto Berrio by the Compania de Petroleo Shell de Colombia, Compania Coloinbiaila de Petroleos El Condor and by the Sociedad Nacional del Carare; further down the valley to the cast of Puerto Wilches, the Socony T'acuum was drilling two wildcats. No discoveries resulted from this exploratory work. On the Barco conces-
