THE bessemer process is nearly one hundred years old. William Kelly, the American inventor, was able to demonstrate that he had accomplished the pneumatic purification of molten pig iron as early as 1847; Henry Bessemer's English patent was granted in 1855. The application of this steelmaking process since then and the present position of bessemer steel are concisely discussed on pages 355 and 356 of the fifth. edition of "The . Making, Shaping and Treating of Steel." The great expansion of the automotive, machine-tool, chemical and oil industries after 1910 opened up a large market for special steels, whereas the output of steel before that time was mainly for structural purposes. The need for building more blast-furnace capacity complementary to bessemer operations, combined with the availability of the necessary amounts of steel scrap, both contributed to the extension of open-hearth plants at the expense of bessemer capacity. The ability of the open-hearth furnaces to consume virtually all types of raw materials as far as phosphorus content is concerned, and the need for selecting low-phosphorus ores of rapidly decreasing sources for the bessemer, also played a part in the reduction of bessemer steelmaking operations and the increase in basic open-hearth plants. As a consequence, the proportion of bessemer steel made in this country decreased from 65.7 per cent of the total in 1900 to 37.1 per cent in 1910, and only 6.8 per cent of the total in 1937. The metallurgical concepts existent between 1910 and 1920 caused the writing of many specifications of very low phosphorus and sulphur content, which definitely barred bessemer steel from many commodities. Now sulphur is being added to many open-hearth and bessemer steels in amounts far exceeding the maximum sulphur content of good bessemer steel. Rephosphorizing is also widely practiced for several specific applications. Even today, the chemical-analysis limits of many important steel specifications have an arbitrary and archaic tinge. The old standard "0.30 .to 0.60 per cent manganese" might be mentioned in this connection as similar to the rigid requirements for maximum sulphur and phosphorus that were established at least 25 years ago. The literature is full of vague and complex discussions of the effects of nitrogen and oxygen where these elements existed in steel in amounts less than 0.02 per cent. Many failures have been attributed to these elements without reasonable proof on which to base the conclusion. Methods of determining oxygen in steel require such complicated equipment that only a few research laboratories have the required apparatus. Even so, the accuracy of oxygen determinations in steel has been only recently reproducible. Because it is the basis of the economically important operation of hardening steel by quenching, the A3 transformation in iron has been the subject of numerous investigations. Although the contributions to this subject are interesting, no general review will be given here. Readers who care to follow the matter further are referred to the comprehensive summary by Cleaves and Thompson,l which covers the literature to about 1935. Their references to 53 papers on the subject suggest that further investigation is hardly justifiable. However, considerable interest has devel oped recently concerning the reversibility of the transformation. From thermo-dynamic considerations, the transition ought to occur at the same point on heating or cooling, if the change of temperature is sufficiently slow. Yet all of the earlier investigators found a difference of several degrees. Burgess and Crowe,2 who used thermal methods, obtained average temperatures of 912" for Ac3 and 900°C. for Ar3 on electrolytic iron. Their data indicate a considerable range of temperature over which the change occurs, both on heating and on cooling. Terry3 measured the susceptibility in the critical range and estimated from the steepest parts of his curves that Ac3 came at 9I8° and Ar3 at 903°C. Ishiwara4 was one of the first investigators to report a shorter interval between the temperature of the change in the two directions. He measured the change of susceptibility of kaolin-coated samples of steel, in a hydrogen atmosphere, at rater of heating and cooling so low that about 3 or 4 hr. were required for the transformation to complete itself. His results show some variability between samples, but indicate that the difference between Ac3 and Ar3 is in the vicinity of 6°C. Roberts and Davey5 measured the space lattice in pure iron in the vicinity of 900°C. and concluded that a change occurs reversibly between 907' 3" and 910" 3°C., probably between 907" and 910°C. Wells, Ackley, and Meh16 made dilatometric determinations of the Ac3 and Ar3 points in samples of hydrogen-treated carbonyl iron maintained under a vacuum. They used three rates of heating and cooling: 2°, ½°, and .?°C. per min. and found the spread between the two points decreased with low rates. At the slowest rate, the Ac3 transition occurred at 909° to 909. 5°C. and the Ar3 change at 907°C. in three of the samples believed to contain the lowest percentages of alien elements. They concluded that if the rate of temperature change and the content of alien eiements were low enough, the A3 transformation would be completely reversible at 909.50 + 1°C. The question of reversibility is an interesting one and when some iron with especially small percentages of alien elements became available the opportunity to conduct an investigation was welcomed. It is with some trepidation that I approach my subject, for I know that I shall at once incur the suspicion of the mechanical engineer, with his concern for boiler tests and efficiencies; of the mining engineer, with his mechanization problems; and of the chemical engineer with his unit processes. Nevertheless, it must be recognized that the technology of fuels, the systematic body of knowledge relating to the production, processing and utilization of mineral fuels, has grown to such proportions and involves so many widely diverse applications of fundamental science and engineering that it behooves us to stop and consider just what its status is in relation to other technologies, as well as in relation to the present and future needs of the social order. The time has come when technologists, applied scientists and engineers must consider the possible effects that their achievements may have on Society. The development of a machine to - -replace -several hundred men is a fine achievement when considered solely from the point of view of creative endeavor. But what of the men who are displaced by the machine! Does not the responsibility for the development of this machine embrace as well the consequences of obsolescence and technological unemployment resulting from such development? I believe that it does and that we must recognize this fact in our practice of engineering and tech- nology as well as in the training of future engineers and technologists. Magnitude of the Fuels Industry Fuel technology is the body of knowledge that relates to the mineral fuels. The fuels industry is by far the most important of all Our mineral industries. The chart in Fig. I, reprinted from U. S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular No. 6643, indicates the compartive values of metals, fuels and other nonmetallic minerals for the year 1929. Of the grand total of 13¼ billions of dollars in value of minerals at the mines, the mineral fuels contributed 48 per cent. Coal, with 34.4 Per cent, exceeded the value of any other single mineral. In fact, the value of the production of the Pennsylvania anthracite mines alone anand exceeds the value of the gold production of the entire world. Petroleum and natural gas in 1929 contributed 14.3 per cent and 3.3 per cent, respectively, of the total value of world mineral production. So much for the world picture; let us now look at the situation in the United States. Over the 60-year period 1880 to '939, $46,409,727,000 of metal1ic products, $80,788,852,000 of fuels (coal, petroleum, natural gas, natural gasoline) and $27,871,-ooo,ooo of nonmetallic minerals other than fuels were produced. Lithium minerals occur predominantly in pegmatites which contain mineral assemblages derived from the crystallization of postmagmatic fluids or from the metasomatic action by residual pegmatitic fluids. They have been the traditional sources of raw materials for ceramic and chemical industries. However, with the discovery of Searles Lake, brines became new sources of lithium. Indeed, the 1960s may well be referred to as the "brine decade" because several brine bodies of significant economic importance were discovered. In the United States, the brines of Clayton Valley, Nevada, presently exploited by Foote Mineral Co., and the Great Salt Lake of Utah, to be exploited by the Great Salt Lake Chemicals Corp., have been defined as major sources of lithium. Also a lithium-bearing brine has been discovered in Chile. Following the termination of the AEC purchase program in 1959, several companies such as Maywood Chemical Co., American Lithium Chemicals, and Quebec Lithium Corp. were forced to close down their operations. Nevertheless, with the development of new applications in glass ceramics, air conditioning systems, synthetic rubber, and metallurgy (aluminum potlines), the lithium industry grew steadily, and with the potential application of lithium metal in batteries and nuclear reactors, a healthy growth can be foreseen. New products and new applications are likely to stimulate exploration for expanded reserves as well as the search for new sources from which lithium could be extracted economically. Geochemistry of Lithium Lithium is the third element in the periodic table. It is the lightest of all the metals, having an atomic weight of 6.938. Its ionic radius is 0.60A and its charge is + 1. The geochemistry of lithium has been extensively studied and has been summarized by Rankama and Sahama (1950), Goldschmidt (1937), and Hortsman (1957). The distribution of lithium in igneous rocks is controlled by its size and its charge, and by the (MgO+FeO)/Li2O ratio. In the early stages of crystallization of a magma, that ratio is very large. Consequently, both magnesium and iron are removed by ferromagnesian minerals in preference to lithium which is then concentrated in the residual magma. This results in an enrichment of lithium in silicic rocks and pegmatites (Strock, 1936). Pegmatites are coarse-grained igneous rocks formed by the crystallization of postmagmatic fluids. Minerals within pegmatites may also form by metasomatism (Jahns. 1955). Genetically, the pegmatites are associated kith neigh- boring intrusives. Mineralogically, granitic pegmatites contain feldspar, quartz, and mica as the main constituents and a variety of exotic elements such as lithium, beryllium, tantalum, tin, and cesium, which may or may not occur in economically significant concentrations. Detailed studies by numerous investigators (Cameron et al., 1949, 1954; Hanley et al., 1950; Jahns, 1953, 1955; Page et al., 1953) indicate that pegmatites often exhibit an internal zonal arrangement, with each zone containing a specific suite of minerals. The lithium minerals are usually found in the intermediate zones, and although as many as 13 zones have been recognized by Cameron, a complete zonal arrangement is rarely found. Zoning of pegmatite bodies has also been observed on a regional basis. The regionally zoned pegmatite sequences exhibit mineral assemblages and complexity according to their respective distance from the granitic bodies to which they are genetically related (Mulligan, 1965). The present case history deals with the examination of an almost forgotten nickel prospect, near Winesap, Chelan County, Washington. Although the final results yielded no ore body of commercial importance, the integration of surface and underground exploration, geophysical survey and diamond drilling endow the story with interest. The program is significant because it is illustrative of how the most disappointing expenditures in mining exploration, the "not-finding" costs, could have been reduced had geophysical methods been applied at an appropriate stage in the prospecting work. The Chelan nickel deposit was discovered about 1900, on a sage-brush-covered hillside with a southerly slope, adjacent to Winesap Canyon; the paved highway now extending from Wenatchee northward, up the Columbia River and into Okanogan Valley, is only a mile away. After the deposit was found, three short prospect tunnels were driven into it, and the prospect then remained dormant for 40 years. No. x tunnel was 80 ft. long, running north into the hillside. For the first 35 ft. this adit exposed a typical, iron-stained gossan with streaks and stains of malachite, and small seams of water-soluble nickel sulphate. Beyond this, it encountered a relatively fresh peridotite, well mineralized with blebs of pentlandite. Systematic sampling yielded an average assay of 1.5 per cent nickel and 0.3 per cent copper. Down the hillside to the south and 35 ft. lower in elevation, No. 2 tunnel was driven under No. I and in the same direction, traversing 50 ft. of gneiss before it reached the peridotite. At this point the latter formation showed only scattered blebs of sulphides, not of commercial grade. To the west, on the same contour line as No. I tunnel, and 800 ft. around the hillside from it, No. 3 tunnel was driven 50 ft. into the hill to explore a strong gossan outcrop that assayed 0.5 per cent nickel (Fig. I). From the geological exposures on the hillside and in the tunnels, it appears that the main mass of the hill is formed of an ancient and altered gneiss complex. Into this, a sill-like injection of amphibolite (altered peridotite) was intruded, which, at least in some places, contains commercial quantities of nickel sulphide. Its structure is obscure, but it appears to dip into the hill at an angle of about 15°. In the vicinity of No. 3 tunnel a large dike of quartz diorite cuts the peridotite or amphibolite; about 140 ft. north of the portal of the tunnel, a dike of andesite 00 ft. wide cuts boldly up the hillside to break the continuity of the peridotite in that direction. The geological evidence available was not adequate to decide whether the peridotite forms a continuous sill, or occurs as isolated bodies in the gneiss. Not all of this peridotite carries commercial amounts of pentlandite, but if the mineral-

Does not the responsibility for the development of this machine embrace as well the consequences of obsolescence and technological unemployment resulting from such development? I believe that it does and that we must recognize this fact in our practice of engineering and technology as well as in the training of future engineers and technologists. MAGNITUDE OF THE FUELS INDUSTRY Fuel technology is the body of knowledge that relates to the mineral fuels. The fuels industry is by far the most important of all our mineral industries. The chart in Fig. I, reprinted from U. S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular No. 6643, indicates the comparative values of metals, fuels and other nonmetallic minerals for the year 1929. Of the grand total of 13 1/4 billions of dollars in value of minerals at the mines, the mineral fuels contributed 48 per cent. Coal, with 34.4 per cent, exceeded the value of any other single mineral. In fact, the value of the production of the Pennsylvania anthracite mines alone annually exceeds the value of the gold production of the entire world. Petroleum and natural gas in 1020 contributed 14.3 per cent and 3.3 per cent, respectively, of the total value of world mineral production. So much for the world picture; let us now look at the situation in the United States. Over the 60-year period 1880 to 1939, $46,409,727,000 of metallic products, S80,788,852,000 of fuels (coal, petroleum, natural gas, natural gasoline) and $27,871,000,000 of nonmetallic minerals other than fuels were produced. The mineral fuels have contributed 52.7 per cent of the entire mineral wealth produced over this period that has seen such tremendous industrial development in our country. INTRODUCTION DURING the years 1942-1944, about 125 New England deposits were mined for sheet and punch mica, and many others were briefly prospected. During this period the Geological Survey, United States Department of the Interior, carried on detailed studies of the deposits and the pegmatite bodies that contain them. The primary purpose of the studies was to provide geological information that would contribute toward efficient mine development and operation. The studies were aimed directly at practical production problems. Detailed maps showing the structure of the deposits were prepared, and geological findings were closely correlated with data on specific yields and costs of mining and processing. The result is information that permits a reasonably accurate appraisal of the mica deposits of New England and the mining industry that they support. At a time when the future of the industry is in doubt, it seems desirable to submit this appraisal for consideration. Domestic mica deposits supply only a small fraction of the country's needs in normal times, for only the richest domestic deposits can compete with the low-cost mines of India and Brazil. However, the possibility that this country may be cut off from its supplies in time of war gives domestic deposits an importance much greater than their peacetime production would imply. New England supplied about 22 per cent of domestic output in 1943 and 1944, the peak years of wartime production. Its actual contribution to the war effort was greater, for the proportion of sheet mica of high quality in the New England product is higher than the average for domestic mica. The data analyzed below were collected for the Geological Survey by D. M. Larrabee, A. H. McNair, J. J. Page, V. E. Shainin, G. W. Stewart, and the co-authors of this paper. ANALYSIS OF WARTIME OPERATIONS In considering the data presented in this report, it must be remembered that the scale of mica operations is very small compared with that of many other mining industries. The typical New England mica mine of 1943 and 1944 was worked by a crew of five or six men. Equipment was varied but on the whole extremely simple. The first stage of operation at a deposit was normally opencut mining. Drilling was done mostly with jackhammers powered by portable compressors driven by gasoline engines. Muck was shoveled by hand into buckets with a capacity of 1/3 to 2/3 ton and commonly hoisted by derrick to a dump adjacent to the cut. As operations were carried to greater depth, and the transition to underground mining was made, these methods were modified to a degree depending largely on the attitude of the deposit mined. THOUGH air jets occupy only a minor role in the ventilation of mines and other enclosures, their importance in this respect is greater than is commonly recognized and may be considerably increased as our conception of their modes of operation becomes clearer. The object of this paper is to discuss some of the ways in which air jets are involved in mine ventilation and some possible applications to the ventilation of mines and other enclosed spaces. The mention of air jets ordinarily suggests the use of some form of an air injector, such as the Venturi blower occasionally used for auxiliary ventilation in mines, or the Saccardo (injector) system used to a limited extent for ventilating railroad tunnels. Actually, the term covers such common phenomena as the discharge of air from fan pipes and coal-mine line brattices, and even from smoke stacks and fans. A knowledge of the general mode of air entrainment by jets also helps to explain certain phenomena-some mine-gas explosions, for instance-that otherwise would remain obscure. Jet action has been involved in three recent series of Bureau of Mines experiments in which the author has participated: experiments on fan-pipe discharge, on the dilution of gases discharged from a stack and on the ventilation of a ship's hold. Available data on the discharge of jets into large openings and on the design and performance of air injectors have been analyzed in considerable detail and supplementary experiments are planned for after the war. The results of the fan-pipe experiments have been combined with the analyses of data on jet discharge into large spaces, and have been published.1 The results of the stack-gas dilution tests, which refer to a jet discharged into a crosswind, have also been published2 and a paper on the design and performance of injectors has been prepared for publication.3 These technical experiments and analyses form the background and the documented evidence for the following nontechnical discussion of the use of air jets in mine ventilation. JET CHARACTERISTICS The jets commonly encountered are those in which the air is in turbulent-as opposed to laminar, or streamline-motion. The characteristics under discussion apply only to such turbulent jets and have their basis in theories of the mixing of turbulent air currents. Such jets have basic characteristics that are present, though variable in form, regardless of whether the jet expands freely in space, whether the expansion is limited by adjacent walls, or whether the jet propels air through a flow circuit. They expand at definite angles and entrain the surrounding air, even though the entrained air must be obtained by recirculation of their own air streams. Within the Northern Pennine Orefield, England, intersections of fluorite veins are generally richest in ore, and their recognition enables investigation of the ore potential of the intersecting bodies. A method, based on routine analysis of fluorite for yttrium, has been used with success in mines of the district to predict the location of intersections in partially developed fluorite-bearing ore bodies. This short note is intended as a brief introduction; the details of United Kingdom applications are to be published at a later date. Geology The Northern Pennine Orefield is the second largest fluorspar-producing region in Britain. The associated minerals galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, barite, and witherite have all been extensively worked in the past but, with the exception of a single barytes mine, all of these operations are now abandoned. Galena alone is recovered as a byproduct of fluorspar beneficiation. At the present time two companies are producing about 38,000 tpy of fluorspar from high grade vein ore bodies, and a number of concerns are actively prospecting in old lead workings. The mineralization is localized in veins and replacement flats within favorable lithologies in an alternating limestone, sandstone, shale sequence. Since the thickness of individual beds is not great (generally less than 20 m), vein bodies tend to be ribbon-shaped, with length greatly exceeding width and height (Dunham). They thus present difficult exploration targets for conventional diamond drilling techniques. Ore grade varies greatly along the veins, which can change rapidly in character from mineral stained fault gouge to massive mineral bodies up to 10 m in width. It has been known for a very long time that the richer ore bodies tend to be associated with vein intersections in favorable beds. It is assumed that vein fissure intersections provided vertical channelways through which hot ore-bearing brines were able to ascend from deeper cavities in the sequence. Thus investigation of intersections at other horizons generally yields further ore bodies. Technique The relative concentration of yttrium in fluorite is a good indicator, in the North Pennines, of the direction of flow of mineralizing fluids. In all of the ore bodies so far studied in detail in this region, the concentration of yttrium increases markedly in the direction of vein intersections that are believed to have acted as feeder zones to the remainder of the bodies. The reason for this relationship is probably connected with the degradation of soluble rare earths-fluoride complexes by the changes in various physicochemical parameters of the hydrothermal fluids as they entered the ore body cavities from the feeder zones. The simultaneous release of free fluoride ions also contributed to the increased ore values in these intersection zones. Yttrium values in fluorite taken from a longitudinal traverse of the western ore body, Redburn mine, Rookhope, are plotted in [Fig. 1.] The position of a major vein branch and three cross veins are clearly indicated by yttrium maxima. The cross veins themselves contain up to 2.5 m of low grade fluorspar ore. The exact positions of B and C were unknown previous to the geochemical survey. Similar results have been obtained for several other veins and ore bodies in the area. Clean fluorspar was collected as bulk samples from within 300 mm of the vein wall and, since the vein infilling is simple, with mineral growth from the walls inward, analyses of the samples are considered comparable along the length of the ore body. A method is given for checking pore volume reserve estimates and transient water inflzix factors utilizing early well performance. Principal applications are based on the observation that there is a convenient transient time-range in terms of well spacing in which observed pressure drop will give a good indication of fluid-in-place. Primary quantity determined is a porosity-feet value applicable in the vicinity of an observation well. Checks on porosity or net pay thickness and permeability values also are obtained. These are particularly valuable in improving quality of interpretive factors entering into pore-volume reserve determinations for larger fields. In smaller fields, direct determination of total field reserves and approximate location of boundaries may be made in some cases. Well interference and production data plus a build-up curve on the observation well are needed. The build-up curve may be taken at any time. Field applications are given. The method can be applied with the completion of the second well on a new discovery or to older reservoirs by major changes in withdrawal rates from a local area. Appropriate test length permits results to be obtained with equal accuracy on widely spaced wells. Criteria for optimizing test conditions are given. Provision is made for various boundary and well effects including incomplete observation well build-up. INTRODUCTION Due to low quality data, initial pore volume reserve and water influx estimates may often vary by a factor of two or more from results obtained at a later date. Unfortunately, by conventional methods, more reliable answers from performance usually are not available until after most significant economic decisions have been made. Furthermore, in older reservoirs, uncertainties may still exist as to original oil-in-place, recovery factors and residual oil saturations due to incomplete or inaccurate performance data. This paper outlines situations and appropriate arrangements of basic transient theory whereby well interference data can be utilized to improve the quality of estimates under certain conditions. In addition to production data on offset producers, key information required is a measured pressure drop at an observation well, corrected for any incomplete build-up due to previous production, plus a formation capacity value derived from a conventional pressure build-up plot on the observation well. The method, as outlined, is strictly applicable only to a horizontal single-layered system of uniform rock characteristics containing a homogeneous fluid of low and constant compressibility. However, under the set of test conditions devised, requirements can usually be relaxed so that it should be applicable to most low permeability gas, water and undersaturated oil reservoirs. This is an area where more reliable information is certainly needed. BASIC CONSIDERATIONS A, B, C and F as subscripts or in the text refer to producing Well A, observation Well B, a more remote producing Well C and field boundary F. Combinations such as AB refer to distances and dimensionless times in terms of distances between these points, while single letters refer to distances and dimensionless times in terms of the well-bore or field radius. Equations covering definitions of quantities and complex situations are given in the Appendix. Key equations in practical units are given in Table 2. IN recent years the use of high sulphur fuels and charges in steelmaking has necessitated rapid methods of slag control in order to insure the production of high quality steel. Several systems of control have been discussed in the literature, and of these the method described by Philbrook, Jolly, and Henry' has received the most attention recently. In their process the hydrogen ion concentration of an aqueous slag suspension is determined under controlled, but arbitrary conditions. The basicity of the slag may then be derived from a previously established pH-V ratio curve. Thus, by measuring the pH, some indication of the V ratio is gained, from which significant properties of the slag may be deduced. Philbrook et al. made no claims as to the theoretical justification of their treatment, but simply offered it as a rapid means of slag control. Encouraging results caused others to study the method and publish their findings.2-5 Although there was fair agreement on the efficacy of the method, no common parameter was evolved against which pH readings could be plotted. The results of the various determinations were related to such V ratios as CaO/SiO2 and CaO/ SiO2 + P2O5 by some,'-3 while others" plotted against "excess lime." Rivet,' however, found a simple proportionality between the hydrogen ion concentration and the sulphur content of the molten steel beneath the slag. Since slag control in North American practice is largely directed toward the efficient removal of sulphur from steel, Rivet's approach to the problem had the advantage of connecting directly a property of the slag with the impurity being removed. In view of the diversity of parameters used it seemed probable that some fundamental point was being overlooked in seeking a relationship. Examination of the literature revealed that much emphasis had been laid on experimental detail but scant attention paid to the fundamental aspects of the hydrolysis of the aqueous slag suspension. Consequently the present investigation was undertaken with the object of rectifying this deficiency and deriving, if possible, a parameter of general application. Petrographic studies on several matured Canadian open-hearth steel slags have shown that their major constituents are dicalcium and tricalcium silicates set in a complex matrix of iron oxides and ferrites. These phases are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Free lime is frequently encountered in slags, but is not an equilibrium phase since on continued heating it dissolves forming silicates or ferrites. Thus, it appeared that a study of the hydrolysis of the major phases in steel slags would be profitable. The experimental technique used in the present work was a modification of that described by the other workers.'- Electrical conductivity measurements were also made on the suspensions, since Smith et al." had claimed advantages for this method in their paper on slag control. Thomas W. Mitcham (Strategic Minerals, Inc., Grand Junction, Colo.)—The authors have presented a significant contribution to the field of mining geology. The article is graphic, remarkably concise, and crisply original. The presentation is made on only three pages with two maps, but their Silver Bell story is entirely adequate in background, development, and conclusion. Most of their colleagues would agree that this paper reflects the high quality of the work which these unusually capable men have done in the Silver Bell area over the past few years. The Silver Bell area is one of complex tectonic structure, and time and spatial relationships are by no means apparent. Actually, most of the observations and interpretations in this paper are new to published geologic literature on the Silver Bell area. I am in agreement with these interpretations with two possible exceptions, which are discussed below. One might well define the three roughly parallel west-northwest faults, shown on the insert of Fig. 2, as the major structural elements of the area. North to south, I propose that these be named the Ragged Mountain fault, the Silver Bell fault zone, and the Waterman thrust, after the mountain ranges which are the results of these major structures. While I would agree with the authors that the northern two of these major structures are high-angle faults of the Laramide revolution, my impression is that the southern structure is a low-angle thrust of approximately Miocene age. In support of this opinion, I submit the following observations: 1) irregularity of the fault in strike; 2) scarcity of Laramide intrusives and alteration of sediments along the fault; 3) present high re- lief of the Waterman Range which indicates youth or certainly rejuvenation; and 4) existence of a series of parallel structures farther to the south which results in an outcrop pattern suggesting imbricate thrusting. The authors have stated that Laramide igneous activity began with the intrusion of alaskite. Some dacite flows appear to be conformable with Cretaceous beds, and thus my impression was that alaskite followed the intrusion and extrusion of dacite. I would be interested to learn of evidence in support of the reverse relationship suggested by the authors. Kenyon Richard and J. H. Courtright (authors' reply)—The authors appreciate Mr. Mitcham's attention to this paper. The names he proposed for the major faults seem appropriate. His suggestion that the Waterman fault is a thrust may be correct because he did more work in that particular area than the authors. However, it is believed that no direct evidence of a low-angle thrust relationship has been recognized, and the authors consider that indirect evidence favors a high-angle fault interpretation. The pre-dacite flow age of the alaskite is definitely established, the authors believe, by the fact that the flows rest on an erosion surface which was carved in the dacite porphyry, an intrusive clearly younger than the alaskite, as evidenced by inclusions of alaskite occurring in dacite porphyry. No direct evidence of Cretaceous sediment-flow rock relationships was found at Silver Bell, but in the nearby Tucson mountains dacite agglomerates, megascopically similar to those at Silver Bell, overlie a basal conglomerate which in turn rests on the truncated edges of steep-dipping Cretaceous arkosic beds.

The Iron King mine is I2 miles east of Prescott Arizona, in low foothills of the Agua Fria mining district. It was operated in 1906 and 1907, using gravity methods of concentration, mostly on oxide ores. In 1923 and 1924 shipments of sulphide ores were made to the Humboldt smelter. It remained inactive and stripped unti1 1936, when it was unwatered and sampled to the 400-ft level, the bottom at that time. In 1937 the Iron King Mining Co. purchased the mine and shipped oxide ores. During 1938 a bulk flotation plant of I40 tons daily capacity was erected. The mill has been enlarged and operations have been continuous since the mill first started. In July 1942, the Shattuck Denn Mining Corporation purchased the physical assets from the Iron King Mining Co., and since that time it has operated as the Iron King Branch of the Shattuck Dcnn Mining Corporation. Economic metals recovered are gold, zinc, silver, lead, a little copper, and fluxing pyrite. The ore occurs as a series of northward-dipping shoots arranged in echelon pattern, the series extending over a length of 3500 ft. Strike lengths of shoots vary from 60 to 600 ft, and widths from 3 ft to as much as 14 ft. The ore occurs in a sheared zone in pre-Cambrian chloritic schist. This schist belt is about 6 miles wide, and the ore zone is about 4 miles from the pre-Cambrian granites to the west. No intrusive rocks have been found in the mine, nor is there evidence of any on surface that might indicate a genetic connection with the ore occurrence (Fig I). The schists strike N23°E and dip 75° to the northwest, which might indicate an overturned thrusting from the granites. In the upper levels, the echelon pattern in which the ore occurs was quite regular. no disturbance of the enclosing schist, or of any faulting that might contribute to the formation of the ore pattern was noted. There is a possibility that the ore zone may be on the axis of an isoclinal fold. Another interesting feature is the more or less typical zoning of minerals along the strike in each of the ore shoots (Fig 2). The north end of each shoot is enclosed by schist, while the south ends usually extend out at full width beyond the economic mining limits in a pyrite-quartz low-grade material. The plane of demarcation between ore and schist is very sharp, with little or no impregnation of sulphide in the schist, especially on the footwall side. The footwall schists are usually firm and strong, and vary from dioritic phases to fine-grained, lighter colored bands, almost silky in texture. The hanging wall for a width of 50 to 80 ft consists of alternating sheetings of chloritic and pyritic schists. The mine is now partly developed to the 920-ft level, with some diamond drilling from the 1150-ft station of No. 6 shaft. Economically there has been little change in nature or grade of ore from the top of the sulphides, about 200 ft below surface, to the bottom levels. THROUGH circumstances connected with the war, the senior author lost his records, therefore it has been impossible to include numerical data in this paper. The arsenical quicksilver ore investigated had been roasted, with poor metallurgical results. The vapor-tension temperature curves of mercury and arsenious trioxide are similar, and the arsenical compound hampers the coalescence of mercury drops in the condenser and is the cause of large stack losses. The ore was a gray limestone carrying small amounts of carbon and mineralized with cinnabar and two arsenic minerals, realgar (As2S2) and arsenopyrite (FeAsS). The proportion of realgar often exceeded that of cinnabar; the proportion of arsenopyrite was smaller. The grade of the ore varied between 0.8 and 4 per cent Hg. The problem was to make a high-grade mercury concentrate, as free from arsenic as possible. The water used throughout the testing was hard, having a pH of about 8. FLOTATION OF REALGAR Realgar showed a very strong tendency to float. It formed a film at the surface of the pulp and floated in abundance with only pine oil. Therefore an attempt was made to float the realgar before the cinnabar, but this was not very successful; the percentage of mercury in the realgar concentrate could never be brought below 2 or 3 per cent. Cinnabar slimed easily and floated with pine oil, so that some of it always accompanied the realgar. There was also the question of the cinnabar-arsenopyrite separation. On further investigation it was found that realgar can be floated not only with pine oil but even better with a combination of hydrocarbons and pine oil. Washing the ore with ether revealed that it contained hydrocarbons, which helped to float the realgar. In this connection it belongs to the same class as carbon, sulphur and talc. It can be floated also with a xanthate, when activated by a heavy-metal salt. The conditions favoring the two types of flotation are opposed, as activation by a copper salt facilitates xanthate flotation (in fact, is even necessary to it), whereas it hinders pine oil and petroleum flotation. One type of flotation can be termed nonpolar and the other polar, a distinction that has been stressed in a previous paper.1 DEPRESSION OF REALGAR AND FLOTATION OF CINNABAR 'Many chemicals were tested in an attempt to float the cinnabar and depress the realgar. Finally starch rendered soluble with caustic soda was tried, also several grades of commercial soluble starch, and dextrin was found to be the best and the most convenient reagent. Several of these starch preparations have a strong flocculating effect on the pulp, which is a distinct disadvantage. Dextrin, with its low flocculating power, is excellent. It is noteworthy that starch preparations are also depressants for carbon and talc, so that the fact apparently has a general
