ONE of the important problems in the design of structures and machine parts subjected to rapidly applied loads is the determination of the strength and ductility of the material itself under such conditions. Realizing the need for such information, many investigations have been carried out in the past. Most of these experiments have been made using notched bars in bending either with the Charpy or Izod impact machine. While yielding valuable data on the effect of notches in the energy absorption of the material and on the condition of heat-treatment, this form of test does not lend itself readily to a determination of fundamental stress-strain relations. For this and other reasons, more attention has been paid recently to the tension impact test. An extensive literature already exists on the subject and only those investigations somewhat closely related to the present paper will be mentioned. For a more comprehensive list, the reader is referred to the Symposium on Impact Testing of the A.S.T.M., 1938. The work of Mann,1 Clark and Dätwyler,2 Nádai and Manjoine,3 Winlock and Leiter,4 Deutler,5 and Brinkmann,6 however, deserve especial mention. In most of the previous investigations on the subject, when stress-strain relations were obtained under high rates of loading, it was the common procedure to determine stresses based on the original area and strains based on the original length. Stress-strain curves were then constructed by [P OL, plotting So = Ao as a function of eo = Lo] where A o and Lo refer to the original area and gauge length, respectively. At present there exists a paucity of true stress-strain data in the impact problem. The advantages of constructing so-called true stress-strain curves in order to reveal the fundamental physical properties of the material for the tension test were discussed recently by one of the authors' It was shown that the true physical behavior of the material in the tension test could best be represented [by plotting the average true stress, S = P as a function of e = q' = log o = log Log] where P, A, L, S, e, and q' refer to the load, the cross-sectioned area while the load P is applied, the actual gauge length, the average true stress, the true strain and true reduction in area, respectively. Besides giving a better physical representation, the method has certain additional advantages in that the stress-strain curve so plotted becomes a straight line from the maximum load point to fracture. The construction of such- curves, however, while comparatively simple for the slow rates of loading customarily used in the tension test, presents certain difficulties for tensile impact in that both loads and diameters are required throughout the test. THE use of ball, rod and tube mills for grinding ore, cement and other materials has grown so rapidly during the past forty years that the world's annual consumption of ferrous grinding media for these mills is now estimated to be between one half million and one million tons per year. Ferrous grinding balls constitute the major portion of this tonnage. Obviously they represent sufficient value to justify thorough studies' of the factor sgoverning their performance. The selection of grinding balls is governed principally by: I. Quality (wear resistance, impact resistance, soundness, and the like). 2. Sources of supply and delivered cost. 3. Grinding characteristics or efficiency in the ball mill. This paper deals principally with the quality of ferrous grinding balls. In the study of these factors certain data relative to the fundamental nature of ball wear in ball mills have been obtained. These data are also presented and discussed briefly. THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SUITABLE WEAR TEST A study of the fundamental factors governing the quality of grinding balls has been hampered seriously by the fact that a competent test has, in the past, involved the purchase of several hundred tons of balls of a specific type which were then run in one or more ball mills for a period ranging from several months to several years' duration. Often, during the period of test, it became necessary to change operating conditions or the character of the ore fed, to the test mill with the result that the rate of ball consumption changed and the test figures became of little value. Under such circumstances, progress in the development of better grinding balls, has been necessarily slow. Economic factors and variations in the quality of balls produced by different sources of supply generally make it necessary for each mill operator to determine for himself the most suitable type of balls for his mills. In our own ball mill grinding operations at Climax, Colo., we were faced with this problem. After we had run a few large scale wear tests at considerable expense we decided to investigate the possibilities of a small scale wear test which would be capable of testing numerous types of balls within a relatively short time. The most important requirement of any test is, of course, that it give results which can be used to predict accurately the wear in full scale operations. It was known that Ellis and his associates1,2 had developed a method of testing grinding balls by small scale tests run at the Ontario Research Foundation. Ellis' method of testing was used as a starting point in our investigations. The ores treated at the concentrating plant of the Mahoning Mining Co. at Rosiclare, Ill., come largely from the blanket replacement deposits of the northeastern part of Hardin County, Illinois, and consist of complex mixtures of galena, sphalerite and fluorspar in a gangue of quartz, limestone and sandstone. The several minerals are so intimately inter-grown that they are not liberated at the sizes usually treated by gravity concentration in the usual fluorspar plant. For this reason, an all-flotation method of concentration was developed in cooperation with the station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Mo.1 This flotation separation made possible the commercial production of four coyentrates: (I) lead, (2) zinc, (3) acid-grade fluorspar and (4) metallurgical-grade Auorspar.2-3 Although fluorspar had been floated in Canada in 19214 and a plant at Rosiclare had been floating fluorspar since March 1929, fluorspar flotation was given considerable impetus by the Mahoning developments, since some features of the separation were quickly adopted by other fluorspar companies. The Bureau of Alines5 reports that in the 10 years preceding 1938 only 50,552 tons of fluorspar flotation concentrates were produced in the United States. The rise from this almost nominal figure to 153,750 tons (largely acid grade) in one year (1944)6 is indicative of the activity in fluorspar flotation occasioned by the war. The industry thus proved to be in a position to expand and keep up reasonably well with the requirements imposed upon it by such developments as occurred in high octane aviation gasoline alkylation, in the use of Freon as a refrigerant and as carrier in the Aerosol "bug bomb," and in the atomic bomb project as well as in the expansion of other activities requiring hydrofluoric acid; for example, the aluminum industry. Despite the fact that the greater portion of acid-grade fluorspar produced in the last few years went directly into war uses, the future of the acid-grade field still appears bright. As a result of the activity in fluorine chemistry during the war, it seems likely that in the relatively near future almost every phase of human endeavor will find some fluorine compound involved. The other three concentrates produced deserve some attention in these introductory remarks. The lead concentrates first produced contained both zinc and fluorspar but these did not interfere with their marketing. As will be pointed out later, the quality has steadily improved until today it is a relatively high-grade product. Although some zinc smelters accept concentrates containing limited quantities of fluorspar, it is a very objectionable impurity. THERE has been little investigation of the gold-germanium binary alloys. Haughton1 does not mention any work on the system. In a review article commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of germanium, E. Einecke2 mentioned a gold germanium eutectic at 24 atomic per cent Ge (10.4 weight per cent) melting at 359°C., but did not give the source of his information. From measurements of electrical conductivity, J. 0. Linde3 estimated that at least o.6 weight per cent germanium is soluble in gold. The recent availability of germanium in this country in commercial quantities has led to interest in its properties and its alloys. This study is part of a program of investigation on germanium alloys; work on ternary alloys involving germanium and gold will be reported later. In this investigation, the composition and melting point of the Au-Ge eutectic reported by Einecke has been found to be substantially correct. Eutectic composition has been placed at 12,0 per cent germanium, however. An alloy of 10.4 per cent Ge, Einecke's value, was found to have a few gold dendrites in it. The eutectic temperature has been determined as 356.0 ± 0.5°C., slightly less than the temperature of 359°C reported by Einecke. The liquidus curves and the solid solubility of germanium in gold have been determined, and are shown in Fig. I. MATERIALS AND ALLOYING The germanium used in this investigation was prepared by the Eagle-Picher Lead Co. from pure germanium oxide, by reduction in clay crucibles with sodium cyanide. The regulus is quite pure, assaying over 99.9 per cent Ge. High-purity gold obtained from Handy and Harmon was used. Alloying was carried out in graphite crucibles in an atmosphere of purified hydrogen. The temperature was brought up to 1050° to 1100°C., and the metal was allowed to freeze in the crucible. Prepared in this way, the gold dendrites in hypoeutectic alloys were somewhat segregated at the bottom and sides of the ingot, and on the hypereutectic side the lighter primary germanium tended to gather at the top. Most of the alloys were made from virgin metal. Low-germanium heats were made by alloying pure gold with the eutectic. Melting losses were consistently a few milligrams or less, and the composition could safely be taken from the intended analysis. The 30 per cent and 50 per cent germanium heats for thermal analysis were made in part from remelted higher germanium heats, and they may be off composition as much as one per cent. Because of the high cost of materials, the weight of heats for thermal analysis were 15 to 20 grams and heats for metallographic, X-ray, and hardness specimens were 2 to 4 grams.

In a series of papers, the authors and their associates have shown that the technical cohesion limit is affected by the same four factors that affect the flow stress, namely, the stress system, plastic deformation, temperature, and the strain rate.16-28 Moreover, each of these factors affects the technical cohesion limit in the same way that it affects the flow stress,t The influence of any one of these factors may be represented by a curve of cohesion limits, although only one point on the curve may represent actual fracture. As the term ilfracture stress' has come into use with the same significance as 'ctechnical cohesion limit," the authors are here using the shorter term with the understanding that it does not always refer to actual fracture. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the flow of notched and unnotched specimens betqrcen yield and fracture, A study has thus been made of the flow and fracture of metals as affected by the stress system, and of the ductility of metals as affected by the stress system throughout plastic deformation. Since two of the principal stresses were equal (S2 = S3), the stress systems can be represented in terms of the radial stress ratio, the ratio of the transverse radial stress s3 to the longitudinal stress S1.* The results of the experiments are represented by a series of their flow-stress curves for each Of the metals investigated, and these diagrams have been used for the development Of Other diagrams Of various types. Ludwik was the first to suggest that fracture occurs when the flow stress becomes equal to a technical cohesion limit. Although Ludwik was incorrect in his view that the technical cohesion limit depends only on the amount of plastic deformation and not On the stress system, he was 'Orrect in his view that the flow-stress curve for any stress system terminates at a point representing a technical cohesion limit. The authors have seen some recent references to assertions by other investigators that a point representing the fracture stress need not be on the flow-stress curve. The Ludwik principle, however, "auld Seem to be axiomatic, provided that the flow Stress and fracture stress are properly defined and that the fracture stress is properly determined. Disregard Of this principle has led to some untenable theories Of criteria for fracture. When a metal is very ductile, the conventional method of determining the ductility and fracture stress by dividing the breaking load by the sectional area after fracture, generally gives values that are much too high. Preferred orientations in unalloyed zirconium were determined by the Geiger-counter spectrometer X-ray diffraction technique. With increasing P-annealing temperature the following textures were obtained: l—a retained a-annealing texture, 2—additional orientations predictable from the a-p (Burgers) relationship, and 3—a texture derived from a cube texture in the p phase. Earlier work on cold-worked and a-annealed zirconium was reappraised to show a quantitative dependence of rotations on temperature and to identify spurious areas of some of the pole figures. IN a previous paper,' the preferred orientations of high purity zirconium sheet were described for cold-rolled and annealed samples. Annealing temperatures up to 900°C, which is slightly above the allotropic transformation temperature, were explored. Of interest was the observation that the orientation of the hexagonal-close-packed material after annealing in the temperature range of the stable body-centered-cubic phase was similar to that of the material which had been annealed in the a temperature region, although a change in texture would be expected because of the many new orientations based on an orientation relationship between the two forms of zirconium. The reversion to an original orientation after an allotropic transformation cycle is not unusual. It has been found for titanium,"* for thallium," and for cobaltB among the hexagonal metals. Burgers found in his original work7 that, when zirconium was cooled through the allotropic transformation and then reheated, the body-centered-cubic phase reverted to the original orientation. Additional experimental work has been carried out to further explore the textures of zirconium after annealing in the temperature range above the allotropic transformation. In addition, a reappraisal was made of the earlier results for zirconium' in light of recent work on titanium4 which has shown that the texture type depends quantitatively on the temperature of annealing and that spurious areas may be encountered in the pole figures of hexagonal metals determined by the X-ray spectrogoniometer technique of analysis. Experimental Procedure Crystal-bar zirconium prepared by the iodide process was the material used in this investigation. The major impurity was hafnium which was less than 0.3 pct. The composition obtained by spectro-graphic analysis is given in Table I. Cold-rolled specimens were prepared from crystal bar by a series of reductions of approximately 0.010 in. until the sheet reached a thickness of 0.010 in., after which it was cold rolled to 0.001 in. thickness between sheets of alloy steel. The total cold reduction amounted to about 99.8 pct. Specimens were annealed for % hr at 1000" to 1100" to 1200°C or 1 hr at 1400°C in an evacuated Vycor or quartz tube. Since the introduction of the relative permeability concept in the middle thirties1,2 various investigators have shown3,10,11,12,15 how the basic equations for the flow of oil and gas through porous media can he utilized to compute the recovery from depletion type or solution gas drive type reservoirs under certain conditions, when the necessary physical data pertaining to the reservoir rock and its reservoir fluids are known. In the study by Muskat and Taylor" in 1945, the effects of viscosity, gas solubility, shrinkage, and the permeability-saturation characteristics of the producing formation on the production histories and the recovery of gas drive reservoirs were analyzed. Each parameter was varied a limited number of times, while keeping the others constant. The work was not carried to the point where the data could be used directly to estimate the primary recovery in those cases where certain rock and fluid characteristics were known or could be assumed. Since the publication of this classic study, the work by Beal in 194616 and Standing in 1952'" has established general correlations of oil viscosity and shrinkage with gas solubility and oil gravity. In addition. a considerable number of relative permeability relationships for different types of reservoir rocks has been published2,5,13,17,19,20. Also, the burden of the numerical work required in the solutions of the differential equation has. during the last few years, been greatly reduced with the availability of modern electronic computing facilities. The purpose of this paper is therefore to present the results of a large number of such recovery computations covering the normal range of variation of the main parameters such as the type of rock, the API gravity of the oil, and the amount of gas in solution. As is to be expected, the ultimate recovery is found to increase with the oil gravity. except for the higher solution gas-oil ratios. Within the normal range of solubilities, the ultimate recovery generally appears to decrease with the amount of gas in solution for the higher oil gravities, and to show a slight increase for the lower oil gravities. Intermediate oil gravities seem to fall between the two trends. The type of reservoir rock, as identified by its relative permeability relationship, appears to have a very pronounced effect on the ultimate recovery. In general, sands and sandstones show higher recoveries than limestones and dolomites, although certain intergranular limestones seem to show a higher theoretical recovery than unconsolidated sand. The recovery from sands and sandstones generally decreases with increasing cementation and consolidation, while the recoveries from limestones and dolomites are highest for the intergranular type and lowest for the fracture type porosity.

THE purpose of this paper is to present data that have been obtained during the past two years concerning the effects of prior cold-work and temperature and time of anneal upon the recrystallization and grain growth of 70-30 cartridge brass. It was desirable to study certain of these phases so that an accurate picture of the principles of the subject could be shown. The work is not intended to provide explicit annealing data, but to provide material examples that may help to clarify analogous problems concerning this alloy. Specifications often set limitations upon the grain size of annealed materials because of the importance of grain size upon subsequent manufacturing operations. It was, therefore, worth while to study the variables that affect the recrystallized grain size of this material. C. H. Mathewson and A. Phillips,1 W. R. Webster,2 and others have presented annealing characteristic curves of this alloy. A recent typical curve presented by R. S. Pratt3 is shown in Fig. I. The tensile properties and grain sizes are shown as functions of the annealing temperature. Such curves serve as a useful guide in determining the physical properties of annealed material, but as they are made generally under carefully controlled laboratory conditions they do not indicate the performance of metal annealed in a mill muffle, where conditions are different and the amounts of metal require necessarily longer heating times and temperatures. Study of the effect of time and temperature upon grain growth and subsequent recrystallization was made with a coil of metal having the following analysis: 70.04 per cent copper; 0.007 lead; 0.007 iron; 0.00 tin; 0.00 silicon; 0.001 nickel; 0.000 phosphorus; balance zinc. The sample coil was obtained from metal that had been rerolled from hot-rolled mill stock, and was received at 0.228-in. gauge, soft, with a grain size of 0.125 mm. This material was then rolled 43.5 per cent to 0.125-in. gauge and annealed to a 0.053-mm. grain size. In this condition, samples were cut and used in all of the experimental work reported in this paper. TIME The first study was of crystal growth at a constant temperature over a moderate length of time. Material was cut from the stock coil at 0.129-in. size and rolled 75 per cent hard to 0.032-in. gauge. From this piece small samples were cut ½ by 2 in., suitable for grain-size determinations. Twelve samples were placed in an electric furnace uniformly across the width, approximately an inch from the floor, A thermocouple was wired to the center sample, so that the approximate metal temperature could be followed. If some solution-quenched supersaturated aluminum solid solutions, e.g.., Al(Cu), are plastically deformed at room temperature and then aged at 200oC, the hardness may first decrease before increasing in the usual manner ' A similar transient softening is observed, even in the absence of plastic deformation, when a thin foil or small-diameter wire Al(Cu) specimen is rapidly quenched from the solution-treatment temperature and then aged.' Also, some solution-quenched and neutron-irradiated alloys undergo an initial hardness decrease during subsequent aging.3 The usual explanation of the transient softening in the above examples involves the effect of vacancies introduced by plastic deformation, rapid quenching, and neutron irradiation, respectively However, the mechanism of softening is not unequivo-cably established. In the first-noted case, Gane and parkins' observed that the softening was approximately proportional to the difference in the atomic diameters of solute and solvent, and it was argued that, if a large relative difference in atomic diameter promoted vacancy-assisted room-temperature solute diffusion to dislocations, dislocation climb occurring during subsequent aging at 200°C could cause transient softening. Some substantiation of this theory was offered by the additional observation that discontinuous yielding of solution-quenched polycrystalline Al(Cu) tensile specimens was suppressed by interrupting the test for a short aging treatment at 200°C. Of course, reversion (resolution of GPI) at 200°C would also cause softening, and Sil-cock4 expressed the opinion that the softening in the case of Al(Cu) must be partly associated with reversion. Also, Hirsch5 commented on the possibility that, if jogs cause hardening, an anneal at 200°C should straighten the jogged dislocations and result in softening. However, parkins' has re-expressed his belief that these mechanisms are not entirely consistent with the observed serrated stress-strain curves. Experimental. New data has now been obtained for Al(Cu), Al(Ge), Al(Mg), and Al(Zn) primary solid-solution alloys. These alloys were prepared from metals exceeding 99.99 pct purity, and specimens 4 by 4 in. diam were solution-treated, quenched, deformed 10 pct in compression at room temperature, and aged at 200'C in a cottonseed oil bath for various times. Generally, these operations could not be carried out in rapid succession, so the alloys were stored in a freezer between treatments to minimize aging. The variation in hardness with aging time, Figs. 1 to 4, was determined by microhardness testing with a 3.0-kg load. At least five readings were averaged to obtain each data point, and all measurements were taken about the center circumference of each cylinder (region of maximum deformation). Each specimen was used to obtain only one data point, i.e., specimens were not replaced in the aging bath after measurements were made. In

THIS paper describes the application of amine flotation to a specific problem-that of increasing the grade of magnetite concentrates derived from an iron ore requiring extremely fine grinding for mineral liberation. Experiments conducted on an iron ore from Wisconsin had shown that concentrates containing 60 to 62 per cent iron and 12 to 14 per cent silica could be produced by magnetic separation. The residual silica occurred as quartz and hornblende, either entrained or locked with magnetite. Most advantageous utilization of the concentrate, however, necessitated that the silica content be reduced to about 5 per cent, equivalent to an iron content of 67.5 per cent. It had been demonstrated that tabling of the magnetic concentrate removed sufficient quartz and hornblende to yield an acceptable concentrate, but disadvantages inherent in tabling dictated that flotation be investigated as a substitute. The goals set for the flotation investigation were: (I) the production of concentrates of about 68 per cent iron content from the magnetic concentrate; (2) an iron recovery of about 85 per cent of that in the feed to flotation; and (3) minimum reagent cost. Both batch and continuous flotation tests were employed; the former, to establish the procedure and the latter to verify it. Although the data were obtained on a specific ore, and with a commercial application in view, it is believed that they have a bearing on other problems where amine flotation is being used or is anticipated. SAMPLES Two samples, designated "minus 100mesh magnetic concentrate" and "minus 150-mesh magnetic concentrate," were used for the batch experimental work. They differed only in the degree to which the crude ore was ground prior to magnetic separation. They were stored moist in steel drums in quantities sufficient for all the experimental work reported. This procedure had the advantage of allowing all tests to be made on common samples, but had the disadvantage that the individual flotation samples, because of the difference in storage time, were subject to various stages of surface alteration. Previous work had indicated that common samples were desirable for the batch studies, and it was decided that if these data appeared sufficiently promising the effect of surface alteration could be checked best by continuous tests. The size distributions and the assays of the samples are given in Table I. The minus 150-mesh magnetic concentrate, on which most of the flotation tests were made, assayed 60.9 per cent iron, 13.3 per cent silica, and 0.016 per cent phosphorus. Its development, especially during the past 50 years, has been accomplished through a rapid succession of enlargements and improvements. The remarkable growth in furnace output during this period is a tribute to the engineers and operators who have constantly endeavored to build larger and more efficient blast furnaces. The blast-furnace operators and their mechanical and electrical maintenance staffs have originated most of the furnace improvements as a result of their practical operating experience. Furnace Lines About 50 years ago furnaces consisted of hearths about 11 ft. in diameter, which merged into rather high flat boshes, with no cylindrical section between the bosh and inwall and no cylindrical section at the stock line. Since then the lines of the furnace invariably have included a cylindrical section above the bosh and a cylindrical section at the stock line. Notable increases have been made in both hearth diameters and furnace heights. During the past 10 years hearth diameters in new and replaced furnace stacks have rather consistently fallen within the range of 25 to 28 ft. while their heights have varied be- tween 100 and 106 ft. The lines of most large furnaces using Mesabi ores have followed a fairly uniform pattern (Fig. I) in which the principal dimensions for 25-ft. hearth furnaces are as follows: Hearth diameter............... 25 it. o in. However, where the immediate requirements indicate a stack or furnace of a certain productive capacity, and the future prospects indicate that more capacity can be utilized, it is well to consider building the furnace ior the ultimate capacity rather than to install a smaller hearth with provision for future enlargement. The decision to build the larger hearth and stack for the ultimate capacity probably will require no greater initial investment, since the saving in the cost of brickwork will about offset the greater cost of the hearth jacket, tuyere breast and bosh bands. In the meantime. the furnace of larger hearth dimensions, while operating below its ultimate output, will yield a better coke rate and

Several of the current concepts of brittle fracture involve consideration of, the existence of defects or flaws. Griffith 1 observed that the tensile strength of brittle materials was several orders of magnitude less than might be expected from the calculated strength of the molecular bonds. He was able to show that the stress concentration at the tip of an elliptical crack is sufficient to raise the local stress level many fold. He therefore proposed that real materials do contain such stress risers in the form of minute cracks and that this accounts for the rather large difference between theoretical and actual strengths of brittle materials. The degree of stress magnification depends to a great extent upon the orientation of the crack with respect to the general stress system, and to the general geometry of the crack. It is but a small step to extend the theory to include flaws and defects of other sorts which, though they may be less tractable mathematically than cracks, may still function as stress risers in a real sense in real materials. Brace 2 proposed that the application of the Griffith theory to rock material could be tested in two ways: "(a) by finding the orientation of cracks from which macroscopic fractures have developed and (b) comparing failure strengths from tests at different conditions of loading." In 1963 the author and coworkers at the Bureau of Mines, Twin Cities Mining Research Center, working on a problem involving relationships between strength, sonic velocity, and microstructure "eveloped an experimental technique to examine several somewhat similar questions; namely. does the frequency of occurrence of actual or potential stress risers dictate the relative strength of the material as proposed by Weibull;4 can actual flaws or defects in the rock structure be identified and related to strength and perhaps other properties in accordance with Griffith's theory; and is the anisotropic strength and elastic behavior of certain rocks related to the preferred orientation of these actual or potential stress risers? The experimental approach developed to answer these questions appears equally applicable to the testing of Griffith's theory as proposed by Brace. Basically the approach consists of a series of point-load tensile tests followed by petrofabric examination of thin sections prepared from the specimens in order to identify and apply a quantitative measure to microstructural defects which may have contributed to the failure process. In the point-load test, tensile stresses are induced by a compressive load applied to the center of a disc-shaped specimen by means of two opposing hemispherical indentors. Failure generally occurs as a single fracture parallel to the axis of loading and bisecting the disc. A correlation is presented for predicting the viscosities of light paraffin hydrocarbon mixtures such as natural gases for temperatures from o° to 4o0°F. and for pressures fro1 atmospheric to I0,000 lb. per sq. in. The correlation is based on the viscosity data for the methane-propane system and requires only a knowledge of the molecular weight of the naturaI gas. The viscosities of natural gases reported in the literature up to 2500 lb. were reproduced by the correlation with an average deviation of 5.8 per cent. Introduction The viscosity of a natural gas is required whenever calculations are made of the pressure drop that occurs while the gas flows through pipes or porous media. Methods of predicting the viscosities of gases at the present operating pressures are not available. This paper presents a simple method of predicting the viscosity of a natural gas in the single-phase region from its molecular weight, temperature, and pressure. Viscosity oF Methane-propane Mixtures The viscosity of methane, propane, and four of their binary mixtures, 20,40, 60, and 80 mol per cent, have been determined for pressures from 400 to 5000 lb. per sq. in. and temperatures from 77" to 437 F., with an experimental accuracy of 3.2 per cent.2 The apparatus used in the investigation was a modification of that employed in previous studiesaJ4 on the viscosity of normal paraffin hydrocarbons. It consists of a viscosimeter of the rolling-ball, inclined-tube type,5>k7 with auxiliary equipment for making up and charging binary mixtures into the viscosimeter.~ The viscosity data on the methane-propane mixtures have been plotted as a function of molecular weight with lines of constant pressure, charts of constant temperature in Figs. I to 3. These charts are extrapolated at temperatures below 77°F. and at pressures above 5000 lb. per sq. inch. Prediction OF Viscosity from Molecular Weight of a NaturaI. Gas At atmospheric pressure the viscosity of light hydrocarbon gases increased with increased temperature, contrary to the change of viscosity of liquids with temperature. Is this impact method a better index of the true resistance to grinding under actual field conditions than other methods the author has reported in the TRANSACTIONS? F. C. BOND (author's reply).-The impact crushing device was designed to measure relative resistance to crushing, or what may be called the crushability, and is not used for comparing the resistance to grinding, or grindability. The correlation between crushability and grindability of different materials is not at all close, since fractures, zones of weakness, and structural features of rock have a much greater effect upon the crushability than upon the grindability. We still depend upon our standard grindability tests for measuring resistance to grinding, and use the impact crushing tests only in relation to crusher installations. The impact crushing device has several advantages over the measurement of crushing strength in pounds per square inch as an index of crushing resistance.
