Introduction The principal thrust of the US Department of Energy (DOE) coal preparation R&D program is to develop technology to reduce ash and sulfur content of US coals to levels where the resultant product can be formulated into a high quality solid or slurry fuel that could replace oil or natural gas in both new and retrofit applications. Detailed analysis is given of the influence of water on the strength of limestone. The mechanism involved in strength reduction is described. Such analysis is of importance in geological, civil, constructional, mining, and metallurgical engineering and is closely associated with the rock mechanics involved in these areas. Mine dumping, slope stability, excavations, sedimentation, etc., are very much affected by the presence of water. Tensile stresses, which have an important role in the development and propagation of fissures, are produced by water in cracks. The development of fissures can be responsible over a long period of time for an ultimate, catastrophic failure.

The symposium on production for the year 1943 contains few papers on the foreign situation. It has always been the policy of officers in charge of the symposium to refrain from publishing information that might possibly injure national or private interests. At the close of the war we hope again to publish full and accurate records of production abroad. A noteworthy feature of the reports on Texas this year is the map on page 469, which shows the districts covered by the statistics. Excerpts from Circular to Authors In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the following excerpts from the Circular to Authors. The field is the unit in this tabulation. In cases of fields extending across State boundaries, such as Rodessa, it is suggested that each State author treat the section of the field in his State as a unit, and by a footnote indicate that the field extends into an adjacent State. Each place in the table may represent one of three possibilities; either the proper entry is determinable and can be supplied by the author, or an approximate figure can be supplied which is the author's best guess and should be entered followed by an x, or it does not apply to the particular field and the space is left blank. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determina-tion. In such cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. The entry of a zero is a positive declaration, and it is an important declaration where it is in order. It is thought that the nearest whole numbers are suficiently accurate for our purposes except as to percentage of sulphur in oil. If an author desires to report any other figures to tenths, he may do so. The quantity of gas produced should include, where possible, gas sold or otherwise marketed, and gas blown into the air, burned as flares or otherwise wasted. Segregation of these figures would be interesting if the authors can make such segregation. In any event, the figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir. Under the columns on ''Depth," the average depth to the top of the productive zones and to the bottom of the productive wells, when subtracted, should give the approximate thickness of the productive zone. For fields where this is not true because of unusually high dip or for some other reasons, it is suggested that the authors indicate in their text the approximate average thickness of the productive zone. The net thickness of the producing formation should be the thickness of the producing zone, less the estimated amount to cover the portions of the zone that do not yield oil, such as dense shales, etc. It is recognized that for some fields the authors can only make rough guesses; in such cases, they should enter their best estimate followed by an x. Average production per acre-foot need not be reported as it can be calculated by those interested from the figures given. In classifying wells as to producing methods, enter all wells that are not "flowing" in the column headed "Artificial Lift." If possible, add footnotes to indicate whether the lift is "pumping," "gas lift" or "air lift."

This volume summarizes characteristics and the geological setting of porphyry copper deposits of the Western Hemisphere. Grouped by characteristics, porphyry copper deposits are described in six regions: Andean orogen, Appalachian orogen, Alaska, northern Cordilleran orogen, southern Cordilleran orogen, and the Caribbean. Each region has its own peculiarities of geologic setting, and those deposit characteristics that may be projected from one chapter to another will be used in reaching the conclusions from which to draw genetic models for porphyry copper deposits. The term porphyry in this volume denotes a type of ore deposit, rather than a rock classification. The classification of intrusive igneous rocks used in this volume is shown in Figs. 36a and 42 (pp. 103, 130). Some modern classifications suggest mineral-ratio definitions other than those used in this volume; however, most literature references cited are based on the classification shown in Figs. 36a and 42. The reader should be aware, therefore, that quartz monzonite in this volume contains from 35% to 65% potassuim feldspar and at least 10% quartz. A term used in this volume is defined where introduced within the context of a specific chapter. Distensional tectonic conditions are used in the sense of Cady (1972) in the Appalachian orogen, for example. Porphyry copper deposits are defined as large bodies of mineralized rock, usually including a porphyritic intrusive phase, that have copper sulfide minerals disseminated through them. The definition has no commercial connotation and is used strictly in a noneconomic sense to encompass the spectrum of copper mineralization associated with these deposits. Terms commonly accepted in the literature are not defined. Porphyry molybdenum and porphyry copper deposits commonly are distinguished by most economic geologists. The basis for the separation is summarized in one chapter of this volume. To permit the reader to more easily peruse the bibliography for any particular region, references will be found at the end of each chapter. The bibliography is not intended to be complete, but is designed to provide adequate minimum coverage for descriptions of deposits in the chapter concerned. Each entry is properly referenced in the text of that chapter to facilitate the reader's research into any particular topic. This volume is written from the point of view of the exploration geologist whose task it is to evaluate the structural, petrographic, mineralogic, and metallogenic characteristics of a porphyry copper deposit. The goal of the evaluation is to determine if, and where, concentrations of metals may exist in an igneous- hydrothermal system that includes the most complex set of geologic factors found in any of the many types of ore deposits. The successful porphyry copper geologist is simultaneously a petrographer, geochemist, structural geologist, and mineralogist. Some porphyry copper deposits have developed in volcanic arcs underlain by a Benioff seismic zone with a trench paralleling the arc. The most convincing example of a deposit known to have developed in an environment where subduction is an active process is the 3.3 m.y. (million years) old Dry Creek occurrence in the Aleutian arc (this volume). On the other hand, the younger deposits in the Cascades appear to have formed in a volcanic arc lacking both the Benioff zone and the offshore trench. Subduction is not widely accepted as an active mechanism for the period when the younger Cascade deposits formed. Subduction has also been questioned for deposits formed at a great distance from a plate boundary (e.g., Bingham). ONE per cent. of ash in a ton of coal has been so little considered that in many circles it has been positively ignored. Even P. T. Barnum had never heard of it, or he would have had one on exhibition alongside the Cardiff Giant and the White Elephant. One per cent. of ash is closely related by both those freaks of Barnum in that it is "stone" and, in its aggregate, it is the greatest "White Elephant" that the American public now supports. Some of you may have paid Mr. Barnum for a look at the "petrified man" (named the Cardiff Giant by the gullible wise men of the early seventies); but it is certain that everyone of you is now paying for the support of the great White Elephant that is being constantly carried by our railroads all over the country-at the public's expense. " One per cent. of ash in a ton of coal" requires 120,000 open-top railroad cars each year to transport this use- less stone giant from its native bed in the coal seams of the bituminous regions to the coal bins of the consuming public.

AT the U. S. Gypsum Co. mine in Oakfield, N. Y., a flat-lying vein of rock gypsum is mined by the room and pillar method. Averaging only 4 ft thick, this vein is 1200 to 6000 ft in mineable width and many miles in length. Overlying the vein throughout the mine is a 2-ft thickness of distintegrated gypseous shale and fractured limestone which parts easily, falling with little or no warning. This shale, known as ash, varies in thickness from less than an inch to more than a foot. Small veinlets of selenite cut this shaley material, which breaks around timber props. The 18-in. limestone over-lying the ash is fractured vertically into blocks of varying size and will fail if any but the shortest unsupported spans are permitted. Above these two members is a thick layer of competent limestone.

C. W. WASHBURNE; New York; N. Y. (communication to the Secretary *).-It has long been known that sulphur and oxygen react upon crude oils, removing hydrogen and thereby creating unsaturated hydrocarbons which unite with each other, producing heavier forms. Dr. Rogers now finds that the percentage of sulphur in the oils of several fields in California is roughly proportional to the specific gravity of the oil. This additional proof is most welcome. It is rather surprising, , in that the impression had prevailed that practically all the reacting sulphur escaped from the oil as hydrogen sulphide, and did not remain in combination with the oil. It would be interesting to know what part of the sulphur-plotted by Dr. Rogers is in solution as free sulphur and hydrogen sulphide, and what part is, in more complex compounds, such as thiophanes, etc.

The propagation of pressurized fractures across a frictional interface is discussed, with emphasis on the case where an offset, or step, in the crack is produced. Theoretically, the steps can occur at regions of reduced shear strength along the interface. As a fracture is propagated toward a weak zone, extensional strain is concentrated at the edges of the zone where higher shear stresses can be sustained. Thus, when the fracture intersects the weak zone, it can be reinitiated at some small distance away on the opposite wall of the interface. The phenomenon has been studied through numerical modeling and laboratory experiments of the hydraulic fracturing process. Field observation of natural step cracks indicates that the mechanism is applicable to the genesis of jointing patterns in rock. Such features should not be confused, therefore, with steps caused by shear displacement of an interface.

The value of the semi-coke thus produced would doubtless go far toward solving the problem of smoke prevention, and suggests the possibility of the substitution of a smokeless fuel for anthracite and so-called smokeless coals. Whether such coke would have any value as metallurgical coke is a question which cannot be answered for lack of any experimental data in the use of such material. Of course interest is accentuated, at the present time, in the amount and character of the tars, which promise greatly to exceed in values the products obtainable from. the high-temperature process. The difficulties encountered in adapting the principles of low-temperature carbonization to industrial methods are well nigh insurmountable. It is often necessary to calculate the size of a hoisting-plant required to raise a given quantity of material, either as a preliminary to the detail design of the machinery, or to decide whether machinery on hand or offered by a manufacturer is adapted to the work to be done. The first element of the problem to be determined is the load to be raised. In a mine that is already developed, this is limited by the size of car that can be hoisted out of the mine and that will pass through the underground gangways. If these place no limits on the design, the size of the load will depend on the output desired per day, and on the number of hoists that call be made per day. The latter are fixed by the time required per hoist and the number of hours available for hoisting, after deducting from the working-day the time required for raising and lowering men, sending down supplies, and for the many small delays in handling cars. It must also be decided whether the hoisting is to be done in one shift or in all of them.

The importance of recognizing vibration problems during the plant design stage is emphasized in this paper. Often an experienced designer can recommend what type of support to use and how to tune the structure. However, obtaining sufficient information is a serious problem dealing with vibration. Vibration is a well known phenomena which, simply and generally, can be defined as a periodic motion. It is experienced in nature as caused by eerth- quake, wind, or ocean waves, and must be dealt with in the design of structure or ships. It must be realized that wherever there are moving or rotating elements, it is possible that unbalanced forces may induce vibration in the elements themselves, in adjacent parts, or in the supporting structure. Under certain circumstances, vibration will destroy machines or structures quickly and totally. The most widely known case is the total collapse of the Tacoma bridge when subjected to a wind of only 42 mph. Failures due to vibration of machines and/or their supports may occur in industrial plants where heavy equipment employed in the process must be supported and several machines are combined in close proximity. WILSON and the authors)] Ground Movement Adjacent to a Caving Block in the Climax Molybdenum Mine STEPHEN ROYCE•-It is interesting to note from B, Fig 2, how closely the subsidence limits approximate to the 60° angle of draw, which is so commonly found to rule in large scale rock subsidence. The tension cracks shown at B are commonly found in the initial stages of subsidence movement and spread like a halo about subsidence limits as movement extends. These tension cracks usually grow into escarpments later on. Apparently from the illustrations and description given, a system of vertical fractures is the predominating weakness in the wall rock at Climax, and therefore both tension cracks and escarpments are prevailingly vertical in attitude. The illustrations in Mr. Vanderwilt's article seem to conform to the general rule that yield by subsidence is heralded by tension cracks which foreshadow the appearance of the subsidence scarps which are both described in the paper and shown in Fig 2. The difference between the B side and the A side of Fig 2 is apparently caused mainly by the vertical fracturing which controls subsidence at Climax as compared to the relatively homogeneous rock formation at A upon which the original figure in Peele's Handbook was based. The draw at B is exactly 60°, while the draw at A is a little flatter. The influence of the vertical fractures explains the difference. The surprising feature is the relatively small deviation from the general 60° draw line, which is about the average of rock subsidence experience. The influence of local fracture systems, faults and bedding in controlling subsidence all the way from extremely low angles of draw to vertical is rather fully discussed in the Peele's Handbook article referred to. The more illustrations of subsidence there are published the better will be our knowledge. The general principles are pretty well established. The wide local differences reflect the effect of local conditions. This paper is a very valuable contribution to the subject, and for the benefit of the mining industry, it is to be hoped that there will be many more such clear and concise presentations. Particularly block caving is apt to be of greatly increasing importance in the future of a mining industry that must meet high labor costs. More examples of block caving from small scale to large scale operations like those at Climax will serve a vital need. JOHN W. A. J. Langhammer.—That is rather asking a question of the wrong man. However, I will reply to the question from our point of view. There is a considerable amount of iron powder available but the properties vary over a wide range. Powder metallurgy has progressed to the stage where we recognize certain requirements in powdered iron, and what may be a good powdered iron for one application will not necessarily fit the picture for the next one. Further, I believe that there is room for great improvement in the properties of powdered iron. Also, that there is only a limited quantity of powdered iron available having certain specific properties in which we are at the moment interested. F. P. Peters.—May I have a word? With all possible respect to the contributions of the Chrysler Corporation (and they have been tremendous) to the war effort, I think it is easy to get from part of Mr. Langhammer's discussion a false impression of vaster possibilities than really exist. It would be well if in addition to Mr. Langhammer some other manufacturers of machine parts' might tell us in the next few minutes some of the limitations they have found. For example, what is the maximum tensile strength that is being produced in a commercial part in production today? And what is the actual size limitation on bearings that are in operation and are standing up well? We should always bear in mind the fact—and I think Mr. Langhammer will agree with me— that quoting on a particular part does not necessarily mean placing it in production. In many cases it may be several months before the quotation is resolved and we know whether the part can be made. Let us open up this thing for a little free-for-all discussion of some of the ceilings that do exist in the design of machine parts made by powder metallurgy. The ceiling is not unlimited, and Mr. Langhsmmer will agree with that, 3 am sure. H. Hendriks.*—I do not think that there is so much limitation in the making of powder metallurgic manufactured parts as mentioned. Last year we had the problem of making dies for a special machine used in the manufacturing of slide fasteners. This part was wearing out very fast. It was very hard to make, it had to be hobbed out of a special steel and it was a difficult thing to manufacture in general. The tolerances were one half of one thousandth of one inch on all dimensions. We submitted this die to a manufacturer of powder-metal parts. He thought that it was impossible, but we were not as skeptical as he was and decided to try it anyway. The Canadian General Electric Carboloy Division, in Toronto, gave us then the design for the dies, which we made to their specifications. When the first part was delivered, we submitted it to our Inspection Department and its check showed that all the tolerances were right on the dot. They delivered I9 parts of exact specification, then they went off the beam; they could not keep to the tolerances. It took them a long time to get back again. We do not know what happened, but the main point I want to' make is that if a problem is attacked in the right may, the dies are made right and corrected as to dimensions found out by experiment, I do not think that there is so much diffculty in making powder-metal parts to close tolerances.

WILLIAM GRIFFITH, Scranton, Pa.-I notice in the discussions and literature that emphasis is placed on rock dust, shale dust, and limestone dust, and I infer that these different. sorts of rock are ground up to produce this dust. -Is that right? MR. RICE.-That is correct, but we do not have to grind the limestone dust we are using in the experimental mine, as that is obtained from a quarry, and is used just as it comes; we can get it very cheaply, as it is a by-product of the quarries. MR. GRIFFITH.-Have any experiments been made with ordinary dirt out of the fields; could not that be used as ground dust? MR. RICE.-If you dry it and powder it enough so it will float in a, strong air current it might be all right for the barriers, but if it is damp there will be a tendency for it to mat together; then it would be quite useless for making a dust cloud. There might also be another disadvantage if used through the whole mine, if it had very much free silica in it, which is bad for the lungs. Limestone and selected shale dust would not affect the health of miners. MR. GRIFFITH.-In order to do very much good with any of those barriers, they ought to be rather extensively used throughout the mines, and there are few mines that have facilities for grinding up this rock into such a fine dust. If the ordinary earth from a plowed field could be used, even if it were not quite so good, it is more accessible and very much cheaper; therefore, in using it, with the universality of the supply through-out the country, it would tend to stop explosions. MR. RICE (communication to the Secretary*).-In closing, it is well to again emphasize that I do not advocate barriers being a "cure-all" for explosions. It will be generally agreed that prevention is best, not only by means of improved methods of using explosives, and ventilation to prevent accumulations of firedamp, but also by either thoroughly wetting the dust throughout the mine, or else so treating it with rock dust or other inert dust that an explosion cannot start. From my observations I believe that rock dusting. is a practicable method, and has the merit of visibility, and remaining effective for considerable periods, whereas the watering method has to be daily followed up, and if neglected for a short period the mine may become in a dangerous condition. MANY hundreds of publications have appeared during the past 78 years that treat the subject of hydrogen in iron and steel,105 but conclusions regarding the functions of hydrogen in causing some important defects in steel are still unsatisfactory to many; and other hydrogen-caused phenomena yet remain to be identified with this gas. The most widely discussed of these defects is hydrogen embrittlement, but the conception, perhaps the popular one, that embrittlement is due to hydride formation does not conform to the known facts.104 The true identity of hydrogen embrittlement seems instead to lie in a mosaic nature of metal crystals, which is a concept not yet accepted by most metallurgists. A study of hydrogen embrittlement therefore provides new viewpoints in regard to the crystalline substructure of steel. A second widely discussed hydrogen-caused defect is the "flake" or "shatter crack." Although it is generally agreed that the presence of hydrogen is a prerequisite for their appearance, it is also realized that internal stress plays a decisive part. The relationship of hydrogen to internal stress has not been explained very clearly; nor is it always clear what the relationship is between a "flake" and a "snowflake," or between a "fish eye" and a "shatter crack." More importantly, the relationships among hydrogen embrittlement, hydrogen-caused fissures such as "flakes" and the ultramicroscopic structure of steel have scarcely been recognized. The present investigation attempts to provide an explanation for the embrittlement of steel by hydrogen by showing cause for accepting the "block" concept of metal crystals, and then to show how the numerous hydrogen-caused defects are interrelated in the light of this concept. EVIDENCE OF SUBSTRUCTURE IN METAL CRYSTALS It appears that the concept of a crystal as an aggregate of smaller multi-atom units must be accepted in some form if the behavior of metals is to be understood. The abundant literature on the evidence of an ultramicroscopic "mosaic" structure in metals and other crystalline substances suggests that the physicist has provided the metallurgist with an invaluable new insight. The exact picturization that any one physicist provides may be open to question, but the fact that there is some such fundamental substructure seems undeniable. The present work makes no pretense of comprehensively treating the imperfection structure theories. Nor will conclusions be drawn here regarding the exact nature of the substructure of crystals. However, the acceptance of some imperfection theory of fundamental attributes seems so necessary to an understanding of the behavior of hydrogen in steel that the following brief

F. AT. FARMER*, New York (written discussion?)- The paper presents many phases of the welding art concerning which there are very divergent views. In many cases, the wide differences of opinion are based on the results of mechanical tests, but an examination of the mechanical test data discloses a wide variation in character of the tests made and in the details of procedure, so that it is frequently not only difficult to analyze and check the basis of the conclusions but impossible to correlate various groups of test results. It would seem, therefore, that the technique of testing welds is one of the phases of the welding art that should be studied and standardized in order that the results of mechanical tests made by different people may be strictly comparable and have the same significance to all. The vital difference between testing a specimen of steel that includes a welded joint and testing an ordinary specimen is the non-homogeneity of the weld specimen. The weld specimen has at its center a section composed of material that usually has physical, chemical, and metallurgical characteristics distinctly different from the adjoining metal. Furthermore, the section of added metal is more or less irregular and the ratio of added metal to original metal in the section is quite variable. Consequently the details of procedure and of recording data should be more minutely prescribed than in the testing of ordinary specimens. A conspicuous example f a mechanical test that requires standardization is the cold bending test, a standard test for mild steel. With the usual method, the specimen is bent around. a pin of prescribed diameter and, as all specifications usually require bending to 180° without fracture, the manner of applying the load is immaterial because the specimen is ultimately completely wrapped around the pin. But a specimen containing a welded joint at the center will usually not withstand bending to 180° because of the much lower ductility of the deposited metal in the weld. It is therefore obvious that the farther apart the points of support are the greater will be the angle attained before cracking occurs, simply because most of the bending will take place in the original metal. It is therefore highly desirable that there be prescribed a standard test that fixes exactly the distance between the supports, the curvature of the surface of supports, and the relation between this curvature, that of the loading surface, and the thickness of the specimen.
