The Teziutlan copper-zinc deposit is supposed to be of late Cambrian or early Paleozoic age. The country rocks are a series of schists or phyllites, flat lying and in the form of a plunging anticline. The ore deposit occupies a single horizon in the schist for a known horizontal extent of 1200 meters. Along its strike occur four large lenses or ore bodies. These ore bodies occupy positions along the flank and extend to the crest of the anticline. The primary mineralization is in the form of quartz, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and galena, with a few scattered silver anti-monides. Quartz and pyrite form the mineralization between the ore lenses. Ill the ore lenses the sulphides appear as a massive, very fine-grained intergrowth of minerals. The intergrowth suggests a contemporaneous deposition of the heavy sulphides. The grain size, usually under 0.09 mm., makes the separation difficult and fine grinding important. The ore bodies were formed at great depth by solutions probably originating in the same basic magma that gave rise to the dolerite sills that are so common in their vicinity. Introduction The Teziutlan copper-zinc deposit is distinctly different from other ore deposits of Mexico in age and type. Previously stated to be pre-Cambrian in age, it is now quite generally supposed to belong to the late Cambrian or to the early Paleozoic period. Also, in contrast to the usual shallow-vein zone type of mineralization in Mexico, there is here exemplified an intermediate vein zone deposit of copper and zinc. So far as is known, the Tezintlan vein is unique in the history of Mexican geology and in a class by itself, its closest counterpart probably being the copper veins of the pre-Cambrian of Canada. The Teziutlan district is in the extreme northwestern corner of the State of Puebla, Mexico. Teziutlan, the terminus of a branch line of the National Railways from Mexico City, is connected to the mine at Aire Libre by a 17-km. narrow-gauge railroad owned and operated by the Teziutlan Copper Co. Owing to excessive grades on this short linc, Shay-geared locomotives arc used for the transportation of concentrates and supplies.

One mine is near the mill, but most of the mill feed is hauled in by truck from a number of small mines. The same sulphides are found in all the ores, in general, but the amounts vary considerably. All ores contain silver, copper, lead and zinc minerals but one mine ships ore high in silver and lead and low in copper and zinc; while another mine ships ore high in copper and zinc, and low in silver and lead. The common sulphides are galena, carrying most of the silver; chalcopyrite; sphalerite, carrying iron in solid solution; and pyrite, in a gangue consisting of limestone, quartz and garnet. Mineralization is fairly coarse. At the present grind of about 66 per cent minus 200 mesh most of the sulphides are liberated A small amount of chalcopyrite is locked up with the sphalerite and cannot be liberated at an economic grind, and the copper carried into the zinc concentrate with the sphalerite accounts for the comparatively poor recovery of copper in the copper-lead concentrate. Production oF Two Concentrates The milling problem, which was complicated by the extreme variation in the grade of the feed, was first attacked with the idea of producing a silver-copper-lead con- centrate and a zinc concentrate, both with satisfactory grades and recoveries. By February 1941, it was felt that these objectives had been attained, when the grades of the various products and the recoveries were as shown in Table I. A rough outline of the flowsheet and reagents used is as follows: Minus ¾-in. feed to a 7-ft. by 36-in. Hardinge ball mill working in closed circuit with a 36-in. Wemco classifier. The classifier overflow passes to the second cell of an 8-cell bank of No. 18 Special Denver Sub-A flotation machines (volume, 22.5 cu. ft. per cell). A rougher concentrate is removed from the second to the fifth cells inclusive, and returned to the first cell, which is the cleaner. THE oil-producing territory of Peru is confined to the province of Tumbes and the department of Piura, located in the extreme northern end of the republic and adjacent to the southern border of Equador. The first real production came from Zorritos field, located on the shore line and in the province of Tumbes. The production of this territory was soon exceeded by that of the Negritos field, also located along the shore line and in the northwest corner of the department of Piura. Talara, lying a short distance north of the original or early producing area was made the shipping port. This field was developed by the London Pacific Petroleum Co.; it is now-operated by the International Petroleum Ltd. (Toronto, Canada). A little later, the Lobitos field came into prominence; it was first exploited by the Lobitos Oil Co. At present, it is operated by the British Oilfields Ltd. This field is located between Talara, on the south, and Zorritos, on the north. It is now the second largest producing area in the country, the Negritos being by far the largest both in area and production. In other parts of Peru, there have been periods of desultory prospecting, particularly in the department of Puno. This work was carried on in the surrounding region of what,is locally known as the "Pirin" field, developed by the Brown Brothers. It lies between Juliaca, a railway junction point and Lake Titicaca. No favorable results from the latest prospecting have been reported. During the past few months, an opinion has been expressed in various journals that it is doubtful if commercial production will be found in the high plains of the Lake Titicaca region. It is, however, due to the Peruvian oil industry to remember that the Pirin field, although covering but a small area, was a fair producer even under adverse circumstances. If the author's interpretation of the geology of the Titicaca section is correct, certain sections of the high plains will be found to be commercially productive, not-withstanding the unfortunate geographical position from the standpoint of transportation; or its elevation.

If it is proved to be the proper thing, the system will be introduced into other mines. We have to combat the opposition to the use of the "rustling card. It is nothing more nor less than asking the nationality, where the plan formerly worked, and whether he is married or single. ROBERT RHEA GOODRICH, Anaconda, Mont. (written discussion?).¬Since the efficiency of the different phases of personnel work employed by industrial concerns, which are bringing about greater efficiency and lessening the labor turnover, the latter being intimately connected with "contentment of mind," depends on the individual workman, it is highly desirable, as far as industry is concerned, to keep the workman's mind and body in trim in order to lessen accidents and produce a higher grade of work. Prevention being better than cure, health supervision of the workmen during employment should be maintained by the employers in order that mental alertness and physical well-being may be obtained. I have long believed, from observation in many plants, that when any problem is dependent on the individual workman, what he believes and what he does is vitally dependent on his health. I will follow with much interest what is to be clone in the future in relation to the subject of health supervision during employment (as well as medical examinations at the time of employment), and I hope this idea will be generally instituted in personnel work. A workman with good health and a contented mind should be an ideal component of a progressive industrial concern. The contentment of the workman is fostered by a number of admirable phases of welfare work which are being still further developed. The mental and physical well-being of labor should be the issue in Labor vs. Capital in the new period of the industrial promotion of the United States into which we are now entering.

D. R. MITCHELL*—The Chairman mentioned that we have had many papers on cleaning of fine coal and treatment of wash water solids. There are, of course, two reasons for that. One is that we have legislation, particularly in the east. that is making us go into these things whether we want to or not. It just so happens at the present time that I have four plants that are going up under my general direction, three new and one rehabilitation job, and in all of them, we have these problems. Therefore, I was very happy to be able to listen to these papers, because some of the things that are in them are going to help me solve some of the problems that I am facing. Of course, the second reason why we are concerned about fine coal recovery is the fact that coal has become a luxury item in a good many places, particularly in the anthracite region, so that we cannot afford to have it go to waste like we did in former years. There is a third minor reason, and that is that we are finding how to handle and use the extremely fine sizes that we did not know how to use in former years. Now, I have a couple of questions that I would like to ask. First, what are the maximum solids that you could have in a pulp going to one of these launder screens? I realize that it would be for anthracite. Second, of course the life of these screen surfaces is not very long— with brass or bronze, I believe it is a week, and with stainless steel, a month. Would it be possible to use screen surfaces like the Bixby-Zimmer round rod for the small sizes and possibly increase the life? Have you experimented with that? Another point that I would like to bring out, both in Mr. Parton's paper and in some of the others, in studying cyclones and any settling apparatus where we use orifices, the life of the orifices is very short, and that is a problem that still has to be solved. Safety First is a popular motto—most mining companies have adopted it. It is probable, however, that in the majority of cases it is only a motto and gets no further than the office stationery or the bulletin board at the mine's entrance. In but few industries is there employed a greater diversity of machinery and mechanical devices than in coal mining. The list ranges all the tray from mechanical stokers to wood-working machinery and undercutters. Many of these devices, particularly those employed in wood working, are extremely dangerous. In 1913,23 per cent. of all fatalities occurring in coal mining in the U. S. were caused by machinery of some sort or other. Although the forms of accidents occurring with mining machinery are legion, they generally arise from one or more of five causes: (a) Falls from ladders, platforms, etc.; (b) coming in contact with moving machines or parts thereof; (c) electric shocks; (d) failure of some machine part; (e) mismanipulation of valves, levers, switches or other hand-operated controlling devices. The steps which may be taken to prevent accidents from the above causes are almost as numerous as the accidents themselves. There is, and can be, no panacea for all mishaps, nor for any one class of accidents. There is no mathematical or other formula that will bring immunity under any set of conditions. Common sense is the only guide. The remedy for the first-named class of accidents is simple and generally effective—namely, make the staging, ladder, platform, or other support, abundantly strong to carry any possible weight that it may be called upon to bear; provide ample railings on platforms or runways, and non-slipping feet on movable ladders. Coming in contact with moving machine parts is one of the greatest dangers met with in the operation and maintenance of mining machinery. Unfortunately, machine manufacturers have not as a class adopted the idea of thoroughly protecting and incasing the dangerous parts of their product. No one has, or should have, a better or more thorough knowledge of what the dangerous parts or elements of a machine may be than its builder. The future of the Witwatersrand depends upon the possibility of mining and milling profitably the large tonnage of relatively low-grade gold ores known to exist in that area. The problem must be solved if the existence of the gold-mining industry in South Africa is to be saved and continue. To show that this disaster may be avoided, or at least postponed for another decade or longer, the following official statement is of interest: "There is a fairly large area of possible orebody on the East Rand of whose value and depth from the surface we have some though not very accurate knowledge. There is a far larger area south of the Central Rand which probably carries much payable ore, but at depths that at present appear too great to mine. Finally, there is a narrow strip of country over 100 miles in length stretching south from the Rand to Klerksdorp and beyond, which may contain large ore-bodies. The Witwatersrand rocks outcrop over portions of this ground and in places conglomerates occur in it that carry small bodies of payable ore. There is reason to believe that conglomerates of the Witwatersrand system exist over all this strip, though they are for the most part covered by later sediments. It seems probable also that there are large blocks of payable reef in this belt, at any rate in the area that lies close to the present western limit of the developed mines. The structure in this neighborhood is however very complicated and to prove the orebodies will be both difficult and costly." Ores in the Witwatersrand It should be explained in this connection that the conglomerates mentioned here were originally old gravel beds now consolidated into bedded sedimentary rocks, very hard because strongly cemented with secondary silica. The gold exists in this cement and is rarely found in the pebbles composing the rock or bed called locally reef. It is important to realize that these gold deposits are beds; not veins as generally understood by mining engineers and geologists. THE name "tripoli" is used to designate a number of more or less similar types of silica of sedimentary origin. Usually they are spoken of as "soft" silicas, and are light, very fine grained, porous, and friable. Structure is microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline. The deposits are the residual product of weathering and occur in massive form, either blocky or in friable masses. Tripoli is the end product of the weathering of siliceous Limestones, cherty limestones, or cherts. Weathering removes the calcium carbon- ate, leaving a finely divided siliceous residue to which the name "tripoli" has been applied. Authorities differ as to whether the chert accumulates first and is converted into tripoli or the tripoli is derived by direct decay from various forms of silica during initial weathering of the Limestone. It has also been asserted that tripolis were formed in situ in essentially their present condition as a flocculent, colloidal silica, but it is now believed by most geologists that varying degrees of pressure, combined with one or more methods of origin, have influenced the characteristics of the deposits. Considerable confusion has existed as to what constitutes tripoli. Owing to the similarity of names, tripolite, a type of diatomaceous earth found originally in Tripoli in northern Africa, has been erroneously called tripoli. Tripoli, however, contains no diatoms, the distinguishing characteristic of diatomaceous earth. The material mined in the Missouri-Oklahoma area has been considered by the trade to be the type material, and many feel that the term "tripoli" should more properly be restricted to the product of this region. Although also designated as soft silica, it would be less misleading, perhaps, if the siliceous material mined in southern Illinois were called amorphous silica. Both the Missouri-Oklahoma and Illinois materials are very high in silica. Different in composition, as it is very much lower in silica content than tripoli or amorphous silica, yet included under the classification of tripoli in Bureau of Mines statistical data, is the small but important output of rottenstone in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. The principal justification for grouping these three types of silica is similarity of use.

As this paper is written, the only method for the commercial production of lithium metal is by the fusion electrolysis of LiCl-KCl mixtures, as first proposed by Guntz.2 The details of the industrial process have not been made public but Osborg8 stated that an efficiency of more than go pct is obtained with a lithium metal recovery above 95 pct and that the metal is 99.5 pct pure. Pletenev9 gave a power consumption of 66 kw-hr per kilogram of lithium metal produced with a salt consumption of 9 kg of LiCl and 0.4 kg of KCI. Pletenev's figures indicate a somewhat lower recovery than that given by Osborg. In a recent report on German lithium plants, Motock7 gives figures that are also less favorable than those reported by Osborg. At the German plants the lithium recovery in electrolysis was only 83.4 pct, with a power consumption of too kw-hr per kilogram of lithium. The metal averaged only 97 pct pure, with sodium and potassium as the chief impurities. The presence of SO2, SO3, Si02, Ba, Ca, and appreciable amounts of Na and Fe2O3 were especially disturbing in the electrolysis, and it was necessary to run the cell for some time to eliminate most of these impurities and condition the bath. It may be noted here that most of these impurities do not interfere with a thermal reduction process. These facts show that the present method of producing lithium is fairly efficient and would suggest that other methods could not compete. However, fusion electrolysis has certain drawbacks, such as the necessity of supplying costly, low-voltage direct current and of collecting and processing the anodic chlorine if it is not to be wasted. An even greater disadvantage is that lithium chloride must be used for an electrolyte. It is one of the most expensive salts of lithium, since it cannot be produced in anhydrous form by precipitation from aqueous solution, as is done with LiF or Li2CO3. The reduction of lithium by a vacuum process similar to the ferrosilicon method for the production of magnesium would have certain advantages. Small units, such as Pidgeon retorts, would give flexibility of production to meet demand, and a small plant would require moderate capital outlay. There is a possibility of using idle Government-owned magnesium plants for such purposes. The raw materials needed for vacuum thermal reduction would not have to be extremely pure, especially with respect to the iron and calcium content. Tars paper reviews the industrial trends and changes in educational concepts that have led to the development of the modern petroleum engineering curriculum. A trend toward emphasis on engineering fundamentals is noted. While most universities are committed to the traditional four-year engineering program, it is agreed that more than four years is necessary for academic preparation of the petroleum engineer in all phases of his profession. The author proposes a coordinated program of undergraduate and graduate training that will permit of adherence to the general pattern of the present four-year engineering course, with provision for extension of the program into specialized graduate courses of professional character. In the latter, emphasis may vary with the interests and objectives of the individual student. A specific undergraduate curriculum is proposed in which upward of 80 per cent of the available time is devoted to engineering fundamentals. A broad survey of the professional field is afforded in courses grouped in the third and fourth undergraduate years, but detailed treatment of the professional aspects of petroleum engineering is reserved for the graduate program. INTRODUCTION Of necessity, engineering curricula must ever be changing to reflect the new techniques, the changing concepts that are presented as the engineering industries develop and unfold. Particularly is this true of the younger engineering curricula representing comparatively new and rapidly changing industries such as the petroleum industry. Institutions that planned their petroleum engineering curricula a decade or two ago now find that the petroleum industry has become vastly more technical in its requirements. En¬tirely new methods and techniques have come into vogue and must be given place in the curriculum, and some of these are of a character that demands changing emphasis in the fundamental preparatory subjects. College and university faculties cannot complacently assume that curricula in this field that were considered appropriate 10 or 20 years ago still reflect the needs of the industry that they are designed to serve. If they do, their graduates will be poorly equipped to meet the requirements imposed upon them by a rapidly changing industry. Perhaps it is not too much to expect academic authorities to anticipate the trends of industry and equip their graduates with what they will need to attain leadership 10 or 20 years after graduation. Whether or not this desirable objective is possible, there is no excuse for allowing curricula to fall behind the current needs of industry. DURATION OF CURRICULUM The majority of our engineering schools and colleges still adhere to the four-year curricula and there appears to be a definite sentiment among many engineers engaged in industry that work should be so planned that the engineering student may secure the essential academic preparation for his profession in a terminal four-year program. An experiment is described in which the growth of interparticle necks in an array of loose spherical silver powder at temperatures near 300°C was determined by measuring changes in the electrical resistance of the array. The activation energy for neck growth of contacts was derived by abruptly changing temperature and noting the change in the rate of neck growth. Since the experiments were run under an external load, the changes in activation energy with stress could he determined. The activation energy was found to decrease rapidly with increasing stress. It is concluded that the material transport in the experiments is one of plastic flow by dislocation motion. The variation of activation energy with stress is typical for cross slip of dislocations, an important material transport mechanism in the temperature range investigated. THE process in which powder compacts or aggregates of loose powder are held at an elevated temperature under an external load is called hot pressing or sintering under pressure by powder metallurgists. In this investigation the early stages of this process as applied to loose spherical silver- powder aggregates were studied. The powder particles were approximately 100µ in diameter and the temperature was near 300°C, i.e., below one half of the melting point of silver in degrees Kelvin, where volume diffusion is not expected to contribute to sintering. In the process, the contact or neck areas between powder particles grow. Since this involves plastic deformation of the particles under a constant external load (even though not under constant stress) it would be termed creep by mechanical metallurgists. On the other hand, the growth in neck area observed in compacts or loose-powder aggregates held at elevated temperature without the application of an external load is termed sintering by powder metallurgists. During sintering the major driving force is the stress due to surface tension. However, even when no load is placed on the compact or powder aggregate, an external stress, i.e., gravity, plays an important role in sintering in addition to those stresses arising from surface tension, as was shown in two previous investigations.'" It is therefore postulated that no sharp dividing line can be drawn between the phenomena of "creep" and "sintering". Different material transport mechanisms may be involved in either of these phenomena, but they will depend upon the temperature and the level of stress, but not necessarily upon the nature of the driving force: surface tension or external load. At the low temperatures of this investigation, an external stress much higher than the stress due to surface tension is necessary to obtain measurable rates of neck growth. IT IS not necessary to travel hundreds of miles from New York City to see examples of modern mining methods applied in tunnel work. In the various subway jobs, for instance, underground work is done on so large a scale as to justify the oft-quoted remark that here is the world's greatest mining camp. In such cases, however, the size of the excavation makes wholly disproportionate comparison with the haulage drift or adit level of the West. But in West Orange, N. J., Antonio -DiMarco is driving a tunnel from two headings on opposite sides of First Mountain, under contract with the town of West Orange, which is similar in nearly every respect to the type of work that must be done at the mines, and merits description as an example of fast and economical tunnel driving under conditions commonly met with by the mining engineer in more inaccessible parts.

The largest area of high-grade cannel coals known in America is doubtless found in eastern Kentucky. Notwithstanding the popular belief to the contrary, there is no reason to doubt that these eastern Kentucky cannel-fields, following the general rule, will be uncertain and treacherous. But, taken in the aggregate, their extent is very great. The principal service to which cannel coal can be put is enriching illuminating-gas. The electric light has, to a certain extent, created a demand for better gas, and has increased the market for gas-enrichers. Before the discovery of rock-oil, coal-oil was distilled from cannel coal and cannel shale. This business was getting fairly started when the cheaper rock-oil, or petroleum, overcame it, and the great distilleries went into disuse and ruin. Now, again, the chief competitor with cannel coal is oil, namely, the cheap oil of Lima, Ohio. Under proper treatment the vile odor of this oil can be removed.

RED LAKE has suffered from its over-zealous friends, who had something to gain by their zealousness and were, for the time being, friends indeed. Now, what was once hailed as a new El Dorado is anathema to many. Neither extreme view was justi-fied, and in time a new gold district may be expected to develop slowly, but surely. The marvel is that little streaks of valuable metal are ever uncovered by the few men who roam that tre-mendous, almost unexplored area that is the "North Country." The area to be explored is so immense, and the men who can do it so few, that once they leave the "steel," take their canoes and packs, and disappear into the bush, they may travel the innumerable watercourses that are the highways of the wilderness for days or weeks, and never see one of their own kind. Transportation is one of several important increments in the total market cost of most commodities. On a national average it has been reported that transportation accounts for about 25% of the total cost of a product at the market place. And industrial minerals are no exception. In fact, the proportionate cost frequently exceeds the 25% average. Further, it may actually determine the economic value of a deposit. Transportation possibly may be thought of as a specialized subject, of concern only to a traffic manager and of only nominal interest to the mining engineer, the geologist or other technically oriented member of a mineral producers' staff. However, in the industrial minerals field, interest is not commonly confined to exploration, development, production or marketing, but is in contrast an overlapping one. In a very real sense this broad area of interest in the total economics of the business is the specialty of the industrial minerals man. And transportation is a vital part of the total picture.

These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing. committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization and at a minimum of expense. (written discussion*).There is one feature of the fire-refining of electrolytic copper which I believe should be mentioned when the relation of oxygen content to the "pitch" or "set" of refined copper is under discussion; that is, the segregation of impurities. Variation of "pitch" or "set" is frequently noted in castings of different shapes, cast at the same time from the same furnace, though the oxygen content remains identical. For instance, it is possible to cast two wire-bars in the same shaped molds from the same ladleful of copper, the one 2 in. thick showing a good level set, the other, 4 in. thick, being overpoled. Also, when two bars are cast of the same weight and at the same time from the same furnace, one bar in a copper mold at the proper temperature, the other in a mold that has been allowed to get overheated, the bar in the hot mold will show

The adaptation of aluminum to the construction of portable instruments of precision, where lightness is important, is well illustrated by the double reflecting and repeating circle, the invention of Captain Charles Hervey Tomnshend, of New Haven. One of these instruments, now exhibited to the members, has just been completed by Stackpole & Bro., of New York, and is made of aluminum, with the exception of a few minor pieces and a portion of the handle. This instrument is intended for use in a boat, and to be held in one hand like a sextant; and as it is a complete circle, lightness of the material becomes more important. The whole instrument, as shown, exclusive of the eye-pieces and the handle, weighs only one pound, or about one-third of the weight of a sextant of the usual construction. The circle, about nine inches in diameter, was cast in one piece from metal furnished by the Pittsburgh Company.

Molybdenum presents a series of baffling geo- chemical puzzles. It can exist in six different valence states, possessing three different coordination numbers. As a result, it combines with other elements to form a wide variety of negatively and positively charged ions and complexes whose exact chemical nature are relatively unknown. Its rather complex chemistry might be described as "ambidextrous, bi-sexual and polygamous". It is little wonder then that the geochemistry of molybdenum is relatively unknown, and compared to most common metals its geochemical behavior is somewhat unique. The behavior of a particular element or metal, such as molybdenum, in a given dispersion media is largely controlled by the stability relations among its various oxidation products. Recognition of these products and an understanding of their stability relations is therefore a prerequisite to a proper understanding of its observed behavior. Because most secondary dispersion media represent aqueous chemical systems, stability relations are best expressed as functions of Eh and pH.
