The No. 4 I.S.F. Smelter Complex at the Avonmouth Works of Imperial Smelting Corporation (N.S.C.) Limited commenced operation at the beginning of 1968. The furnace rating is 120,000 tons zinc and 40,000 tons lead per annum. Zinc and lead concentrates are unloaded onto a 1,000 tons per hour capacity conveyor belt and automatically weighed and sampled before receipt into a 48,000 ton capacity raw material store. Distribution is by a reversible boom stacker into 16 x 3,000 ton bays and recovery is by a front end loader. Materials are fed to 16 proportioning bins for feeding via continuous weigh feeders to a 132 square metre effective updraught area sinter machine with a material flow rate of 240 tons per hour over the machine. The required quantity of output lump sinter at up to 800ºC is fed to 2 x 600 ton storage bins on the I.S.F. plant. By-product SO2 rich gas is fed to a conventional wet gas single stream acid plant rated at 600 tons per day utilizing a dry N.T.P. gas volume of 100,000 cubic metres per hour. The hot sinter and preheated coke (800ºC) are automatically neighed and charged to a 27.3m2 shaft area I.S.F. fitted with 2 x 5.5 m. wide lead splash condensers. Grade 4 zinc is tapped and transferred to the zinc refinery. Conventional type lead bullion and slag are tapped from the bottom of the furnace through a separation forehearth. The refinery consists of 6 lead and 3 cadmium columns to produce some 52,000 tons per annum of S.H.G. metal. S.H.G. metal and Grade 4 metal is cast into various shapes as required.

IT is a distinct privilege to participate in this meeting convened to honor the memory of Henry Marion Howe, a distinguished scientist and metallurgist. Many have added to our rapidly growing fund of metallurgical knowledge but few have made the unique contribution of formulating basic concepts essential to an over-all comprehensive view of the subject of metallography. Of those previously selected to deliver this lecture, several have added a personal touch to their discourse because they were able to refer to their associations with Dr. Howe. It was not my good fortune to know him or to enjoy his inspiring influence. Like most of you, my contact has been with his published works, which are outstanding in that they provide lucid, detailed expositions of the nature and behavior of metals and alloys. His deep understanding and clarity of expression have greatly accelerated our progress in metallography and in the use of metals. The degree to which a man's thinking, experimentation and writing contribute toward an understanding of basic laws and phenomena determines whether his life's work is of transitory or permanent value. This occasion appropriately recognizes the fundamental importance of Dr. Howe's pioneer work in the field of metallurgy. On two former occasions, gray iron was selected as a subject for discussion. The fact that the production of pig iron has not been discussed before does not reflect any lack of interest on the part of Dr. Howe or former lecturers in the process that under- lies the production of steel. Although Dr. Howe's work in his later years centered around metallography, his earlier publications show a considerable interest in the production of iron and steel. He recognized that in the ascending spiral of metallurgical advancement we are not winding a single thread but are weaving a complex fabric. Specific evidence of his interest in the production of pig iron may be found in his book1 on The Metallography of Cast Iron and Steel. In explaining why blast furnaces have been in constant use for about 600 years, he says: "The process is economical because it utilizes with extraordinary completeness the calorific power of the coke due to the thorough transfer of heat from the gaseous products of combustion to the charge." This emphasis on heat transfer, overlooked in many more extended and more recent discussions of the blast-furnace process, illustrates Professor Howe's ability to see the essentials. Other distinct advantages of the blast furnace, such as the removal of much of the sulphur and practically all of the oxygen, were mentioned. It was also stated that although the blast- furnace process is complex in nature, its outward form is comparatively simple, thus permitting large-scale production at small labor costs. The engineering and metallurgical assessment of the McLaughlin Project ore body concluded that an open-pit mine and cyanide leach mill process would be feasible, producing both waste rock and residual mill tailings. As a part of the planning and permitting process, site selection studies were conducted for the tailings and waste rock disposal. The site selection process began with a regional identification of potential disposal sites and proceeded through 1) regional screening, 2) elimination of sites with obvious fatal flaws, 3) qualitative ranking of site evaluation criteria, 4) quantitative ranking of sites, 5) field investigation, 6) evaluations of field data, and 7) selection of preferred sites. Based on this approach of site rankings and field evaluations, tailings and waste rock disposal sites were selected and recommended for the preliminary design phase of the permitting and project development process. The site selection study provided the documentation necessary to justify the use of these sites for waste disposal and enabled Homestake Mining Co. to anticipate and integrate environmental concerns with agency requirements into the planning process.

The term metamorphism as commonly used means any change in a rock in either form or composition, from whatever cause. By metasomatism, according to Lindgren, is meant a metamorphism that involves a change in the chemical composition of a rock by the addition or subtraction of substance. Certain types of metamorphism are due to the action of mineralizing solutions, and are closely connected with ore deposition; they form, therefore, valuable guides in the exploration for ore-deposits. Other types of metamorphism are due to regional processes, and are not connected with ore deposition. By dynamo-regional metamorphism is meant a primary alteration of rocks over large areas under conditions of pressure, flow- age, and heat. This process produces schists and gneisses from either sediments or igneous rocks. It is thought that there is little migration of minerals or of elements in dynamo-regional metamorphism, and that the changes are due chiefly to recrysallization and rearrangement of original minerals in bands with their major axes oriented normal to the direction of greatest pressure. Under these conditions limestones are commonly altered to marble, and sandstones to quartzite, basic igneous rocks to greenstone or serpentine, while rocks of normal or acid com- position commonly yield the usual types of schist or gneiss. Dynamo-regional metamorphism, extending over large areas, has no connection with mineralizing processes, and is, therefore, no guide to ore deposits; while this process has certain features, such as characteristic mineral associations, in common with contact metamorphism, the results of the two processes may usually be distinguished without difficulty.

Laboratory tests conducted by the author. together with actual field experience in Canada. have indicated the magnitudc of some of the factors affecting ability of drilling mud to clean the hole. A correlation was observed between funnel viscosity and particle slip velocity. A relationship was also observed between the Bingham yield value of the mud and the particle .slip velocity. Laburatury tests indicated little change in slip velocity with funnel viscosities up to ahout 80 sec/qt or to yield values of aboul 15 lb/100 .sq ft. The lip velocity of the partic1e.s. studied vuried from 160 ft/min with water to neerly zero for high mud viscositie. lncreasing the mud density, creating laminar annular mud flow or rotating the drill pipe Mlay also improve the carrying capacity of mud. Field tests indicated that during fast upper-hole drilling, the rate of cutting removal must he sufficien to maintain the concentration of cuttings in the annulus at less than 5 percent by volume to prevernt balled-up drill collars and .stuck drill pipe. INTRODUCTION In the Mid-Continent area, hole cleaning during rotary drilling normally involves the use of low-density drilling muds with funnel viscosities varying from 26 to 80 sec/qt. However, frequently it is necessary to raise the mud viscosity in excess of 200 sec/qt to clean the hole. In addition, field experience has indicated that during very fast upper-hole drilling, annular mud velocities considerably in excess of the maximum slip velocity of the cuttings (normally considered to be 120 to 150 ft/min) are necessary to prevent balling the bit and drill collars. In view of these variations in mud properties and circulation rates necessary to clean the wellbore, a study of factors affecting hole cleaning and the relative magnitude of each was undertaken. The study was also prompted by the knowledge that a drilling mud with properties close to those of water would drill at rates several times that of a viscous mud. The carrying capacity of these near-water muds was not clearly understood, however, and many drillers were reluctant to use them. DISCUSSION EFFECT OF MUD PROPERTIES ON DRILLING RATE The effect of mud properties on drilling rate has been studied by a number of investigators. 1t is clear from their work that mud properties close to those of water will significantly improve drilling rate and bit life. If the water-type mud will also effectively clean the hole and cause no logging or formation impairment problems, the choice of an appropriate drilling fluid is clear—use water. Often, however, a water-type drilling fluid is not capable of effectively cleaning the hole. THEORY OF PARTICLE SETTLING The forces acting on a particle that is allowed to settle through a fluid quickly reach equilibrium, and the particle settles at some constant velocity referred to as the slip velocity. The slip velocity of any particle depends upon a number of factors such as density and viscosity of the fluid, the volume, specific gravity, shape and roughness of the particle, and upon the shape and area of the projected face of the particle at right angles to the direction of relative fluid solid movement. Brown' expressed this relationship for spheres in Newtonian fluids in the following equation. where v, = slip velocity D, — diameter of sphere p, = density of spheye p, = density of liquid /a = friction factor g = constant. The friction factor f, varies as the size, shape, surface roughness and slip velocity of the body, and as the density and viscosity of the fluid varies. WaddelV ound experimentally that where dynamic similarity exists. f, was a function of the particle Reynolds number (NRe) of the sphere (Fig. 1). Fig. 1 shows that f, for spheres varies from over 10 for low NKe numbers to 0.44 for N,,. over 600.

Considering the really short time that has elapsed since hydro-metallurgical processes of extracting copper from ores have been extensively developed, and the large scale on which this method is practised at Ajo, the successful operation of the plant must excite the admiration of every visitor. The application of the mechanical unloader to the purpose for which it is employed at Ajo is but an extension of the use for which it was originally designed, some 20 years ago, for unloading iron-ore vessels at the lower lake ports. At a time when the maximum output of a single machine, with men shoveling the ore into buckets, did not exceed 40 tons per hour, G. H. Hulett invented and constructed a mechanical unloader with a bucket of 10-ton capacity. This machine was of the steam hydrauIic type, and it is still in operation after nearly 20 years of service. Several more machines of the same type were built, but the difficulties of power transmission, and the rapid development of electrical machinery, soon led to the adoption of electrically operated machines, and practically all of the later installations have been thus equipped. This electrically operated unloader has proved so well fitted for the work that the design of the lake boats has been practically revolutionized, with special view to the ease and rapidity of unloading. It is now possible to unload a 12,000-ton vessel with four machines in a little over 2 hr. This has necessitated an increase in the capacity of the machine, and the largest yet built handles an average load of 17 tons, with a possible maximum of 20 to 21 tons. The Ajo excavator is somewhat simpler in design than the iron-ore unloader, in that it is not provided with a larry. In the unloader, the iron ore, picked up by the bucket, is delivered to a larry or transfer car which runs in the lower chord of the bridge; the larry then delivers the ore either into railroad cars, standing on several parallel tracks, or into the stock pile, thereby saving the time that would be required for the bucket to make the trip. Solution by electric analogy of performance problems of reservoirs containing oil and gas has heretofore depended upon a process of successive approximations based on material-balance calculations, because of variation in fluid compressibility. By the addition or subtraction of electric condenser capacity, the analogy network can be adjusted automatically for changing compressibility due to evolution of gas in the reservoir. The addition of a condenser is accomplished by an electronic circuit, which is described; subtracting a condenser is done by merely opening the electrical circuit by means of a relay. Introduction V. Paschkis and H. D. Baker1 first developed in this country a method of applying the analogy of flow of electric current in noninductive circuits to solution of heat-flow problems and suggested its application for certain other problems, such as flow of fluids or mass transfer and chemical diffusion. Necessary details for applying the analogy to flow of fluids in porous media were developed by IV. A. Bruce;= he classified3 the types of analysis and predictions that can be made by the analogy in class I, when the reservoir contains oil but no gas for the period under consideration; in Class 2, when both oil and gas exist in the free state in the reservoir sometime during the period under consideration. Duplication of bottom-hole pressure history and predictions for class I reservoirs can be obtained directly by electric analogy. Until now, the solution of problems pertaining to reservoirs in class 2 was obtained by successive approximations along with material-balance calculations. The object of this paper is to present a method for simplifying the application of electric analogy to class 2 reservoirs, resulting in a solution of these problems as direct as is possible for class I reservoirs. This is accomplished by an electronic control circuit, which adjusts the analogy network for changing compressibilities of fluids contained in the reservoirs. Analogy Network In electrical phenomena the analogy to two-dimensional fluid flow in a porous media is that of current flow through an ideal conducting sheet. This sheet, perfectly insulated on both sides, has resistance and capacitance uniformly distributed throughout its area but is of negligible inductance. The need for having the surface boundaries perfectly insulated is that good correspondence may be had with a permeable fluid-conducting stratum bounded above and below by impermeable media. 111 actual application the ideal conducting sheet, which has distributed parameters, is replaced by a network having lumped values of resistance and capacitance—the resistances are series elements and the capacitances are shunt elements. Single crystals of Pbl-xSnXTe have been grown from The melt under liquid B2O3 using the Czochralski technique. The PbTe-SnTe crystals were grown from near-stoichiometric melts and from melts with slight deviations from sloichiometry. Crystal growth rates ranging from 1 mm per hr to 1 cm per hr were employed, the latter being generally used. Several investigations were performed to characterize the single crystals grown In this study. The phase diagram of the PbTe-SnTe system was examined. X-ray analyses verified the single-crystal character of the crystals, and powder pattern lattice parameter determinations showed that Vegard's law was followed within the limits of the experimental error. The as-grown crystals were p-type with apparent carrier concentrations of -8 x 1018 to -8 x 1020 carriers per cu cm. Hall coefficients, resistivities, and carrier mobilities were determined as a function of composition. Dislocations were revealed by an electrolytic etch, and the crystals were found typically to contain 2 to 4 x 105 dislocations per sq cm. Microhardness measurements were performed; no maximum in the Vickers hardness us composition curve was seen. Mass spectrometry was used for impurity analyses, and the crystals were found to contain 1 to 2 x 1017 total p-type impurities per cubic centimeter. Distribution coefficients were calculated for the major impurities which were Na, Mg, Al, Si, Cl, and Zn. RECENTLY interest has been stimulated in the preparation and characterization of many alloys of the binary compound semiconductors. This interest is due primarily to the almost unlimited possibilities of adjusting the semiconducting characteristics of these materials by varying the alloy compositions. One alloy system which has been receiving extensive investigation is the PbTe-SnTe system, since these alloys show promise of being useful as emitters and detectors of electromagnetic radiation in the spectral range of 8 to 14 µ. This paper reports on the growth of PbTe-SnTe single crystals by the Czochralski technique and investigations of the general properties of these crystals. The phase diagram of the PbTe-SnTe system was investigated so that specific alloy compositions could be attained. I) CRYSTAL GROWTH The PbTe-SnTe single crystals were pulled from the melt using the Czochralski technique. Generally, the crystals were grown from near-stoichiometric melts, although special growth runs were made from both lead-rich and tellurium-rich melts. Growth of single crystals from up to 5 pct lead-rich melts presented no problems; however, melts with tellurium in excess of -1 pct caused volatilization problems which generally made crystal growth impossible. All melts were prepared from high-purity materials as follows: 1) lead— 6 N— Cominco (Cominco Products, Inc., Spokane, Wash.); 2) tin—5N—Cominco; and 3) tellurium— 5N+— American Smelting & Refining Co., Plainfield, N.J. No further purification of materials was undertaken in this study. The elements were reacted at -1000°C in a vacuum-sealed silica tube for a few hours, a gentle rocking action being used to ensure thorough reaction. The cast ingots were then transferred to a silica crucible for crystal growth. A schematic diagram of the growth apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The Vycor tube is sealed at both ends by O-ring flanges so that a vacuum or a positive pressure may be maintained in the growth chamber. A method is presented by which homogeneous, isotropic, and reproducible aggregates of particles such as glass beads, sand, ground glass, etc., may be prepared simply and quickly by using a "particle distributor". Several applications of the packing method to the construction of model reservoirs are described. The flow characteristics of these packings me given. Some factors which limit the usefulness of unconsolidated packs for simulating reservoir rock are overcome through artificial cementation of the aggregates. INTRODUCTION Many laboratory studies of porous media are based on experiments using test packs of sand, glass beads and other granular materials. More confidence can be had in the results of such studies if the test packs are known to have uniform properties throughout, to be mechanically stable and to be accurately reproducible. This paper presents a method by which such packs of a variety of shapes and sizes may be constructed using a particle distributor. Some factors which limit the usefulness of unconsolidated packs as a means for simulating reservoir rock are described. A method of overcoming these limitations, which involves artificial cementation of the packs, is presented. DEVELOPMENT Particles packed by the tamping or vibrating techniques are usually either non-uniform or mechanically unstable. An invention by Currie and Gregoryl overcomes these difficulties to some extent. The invention is based on the use of a stream of falling particles impinging on and passing through a distributor matrix of several layers of closely spaced spheres. The particles are well dispersed by numerous collisions with the spheres. They become homogeneously distributed at some distance below the distributor matrix and at that position are collected in the sample container. This apparatus, however, was found to be ineffective when small particles were used since small particles accumulate on the top surfaces of the spheres. An improved distributor matrix was made, first in the form of a stack of five sieves, and then in the more adaptable form of spaced layers of wire screen. Fig. 1 shows a longitudinal view through a five-layered distributor of eight-mesh wire screen. This device gives excellent results.* Fine particles pass through the distributor with very little hold up. The fine structure of the wire matrix with its many deflecting surfaces ensures good particle distribution. There are no dead areas immediately below the screen as were sometimes observed to occur below a matrix of spheres. Using such a device, 20-30 mesh sands were packed to a porosity of 32.1 per cent at rates varying from 0.17 to 6 lb/rnin. The lowest porosity achieved by tamping small increments of similar sands into a container was 33 per cent. Motion pictures at 3,000 frarnes/sec of the surface of a growing pack of 2-3/4 mm glass beads have helped to show the mechanism by which packs of low porosity are obtained. The beads, although packed at the rate of 5 lb/min, were observed to hit the pack surface singly, for the most part, and at well spaced points of impact. The surface-diffusion coefficients of Ni63 diffusing on low-index planes of nickel single crystals have been measured over the temperature range from 400° to 1000°C using a precision autoradio-gvaphic technique. The activation energy for sur -face diffusion appears to he the same on the {111}, {110), and (100) planes and amounts to -0.60 ev. This is in good agreement with the value (-0.62 ev) reported for (111) planes obtained by mass-transport techniques. In an earlier paper, the authors have reported self surface-diffusion coefficients on silver.' In that work, a deviation of the diffusion coefficients from linearity in the Arrhenius plot was observed at high temperatures. This effect was attributed to a loss of tracer atoms into the bulk by volume diffusion. The purpose of the present work was to extend the technique developed to the nickel surface-diffusion system up to the point where volume diffusion would come into play. The nickel system especially lends itself to this technique due to the high efficiency of the isotope in darkening the film and the large absorption of the weak radiation (0.063 mev /3- particle of the trapped tracer atoms. The diffusion coefficients and ictivation energy for different orientations on nickel can also be compared with a report published by Blakely and Mykura 2 where a mass-transfer technique was used. This paper reports the self surface diffusion of nickel on the low-index planes over a wide temperature range using a precision autoradiographic technique. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experiment is similar to that described in the earlier publication consisting of a radioactive needle as a source resting on a flat, smooth, chemically polished surface annealed in a dynamic dry-hydrogen atmosphere. The needle is held snugly on the surface by a holder fabricated from commercially pure nickel. The point source is made by grinding down a small-diameter nickel rod until a tip of approximately 0.1 mm radius is formed. It is then etched and the needle tip plated with the radioactive isotope Ni63. Nickel single crystals were used whose main impurities were spectrographically determined as Co 0.05, Fe 0.007, C 0.005, and S 0.003 pct. The surfaces, oriented to within 1/2 deg of the low-index planes, were carefully mechanically polished and etched in a 50-30-10-10 hot solution of acetic, nitric, sulfuric, and phosphoric acids giving a smooth polished surface. The crystals were then washed in distilled water and alcohol. Annealing temperatures ranged from 400° to 1000°C with a furnace arrangement in which the crystals could be brought up to temperature in times short compared to diffusing times. The temperature was maintained constant to ±10°C. In the temperature range investigated, the ratio of the surface-diffusion coefficient to the volume-diffusion coefficient (Ds/Du) was 105 or more and the mean bulk-penetration values, calculated from literature values of volume-diffusion coefficients,3 were on the order of 10-5 cm. After the diffusion anneal, the sintered needle is removed, and both the radius of the needle point and spot left on the crystal face are measured. The crystal is then placed on photographic film. Diffusion profiles are obtained by scanning the film with a recording microdensitometer which has a slit width of 10µ. DISCUSSION AND RESULTS The experimental conditions are such that the source strength and needle radius are essentially constant and the time is adjusted such that the mean bulk penetration is small. IN the latter part of the year 1943, it was decided to experiment with diamond-drill blast holes in the Old Bed magnetite mine at the Mineville mines of the Republic Steel Corporation, in sections of the ore body where vertical dimensions were large and where development for sublevel bench stopes had already been done. Other possibilities of application for this drilling method were in the reclamation of old floors and pillars in the pitching folds of the Lower Old Bed ore body and in the reclamation of large vertical pillars in the " 21 " Bonanza-Joker ore body. The cross sections and views of the two ore bodies will show the conditions to which the diamond-drill method has been applied. The Lower Old Bed magnetite ore body is lenticular and dips approximately 30° toward the southwest and strikes generally southeast and northwest. An intensely folded structure, which pitches generally on an axis approximately at right angles to the strike, is continuous from the uppermost old workings down to the present bottom of the mine, and probably continues with depth. On successively lower levels this folded structure becomes greater in vertical dimensions and the two folds are closer together in a horizontal dimension. As shown in Fig. 1, this folded structure gives to parts of the ore body considerable vertical dimensions, which provide areas that were developed for sublevel bench stoping above a slushing drift, as shown in Fig. 2. It was in one of these previously developed sublevel bench stopes, No. 26 on the 1185-ft. level, that the diamond-drill blast-hole method was applied for mining the upper sublevel. The lower sublevel was underhand-bench-drilled to the finger raises of the scram drift below. The roof of this stoping area began to break and spall on the lower sublevel, causing the roof to become inclined. Along the hanging wall of the stope this reached an elevation about half way between the two sublevels. A smooth schistose seam in the hanging wall causes the ore to break away freely. Therefore, if bench mining had been carried on in the upper sublevel, a dangerous condition of poorly supported benches would have resulted. When the drillers were slashing across the sublevel to footwall and hanging wall to make a bench, spalling roof of the opening below would probably have carried away part of the bench, and would have left a dangerous place in which to continue underhand benching. A 6 by 8-ft. raise had been driven between the lower stope and the upper sublevel about 200 ft. from a manway. It was decided to use this raise for a starting cut and to arrange holes as shown in Fig. 3, so that a slot would be opened across the ore body between the footwall and hanging wall. This slot would then be used for the purpose of breaking into the ore; by blasting vertical rings of holes drilled at right angles to the axis of the pitching folds as nearly as possible. Eluropium -activated yttrium vanadate, excited by short- and long-wavelength ultraviolet radiations, shows enzission lines near 6100A, the principal ones correspondirzg to transitions of EU+3 ions from 5Do to the F2 energy level. The ~neclmlallistns of absorption and etnissiorz of this phosphor have been empirically studied. The absorption is caused by two separate processes in the matrix. The phosphor YVO4:Eu and tlie matrix YVO, haue essentially the same resectance spectra in the region 2500 to 4000if. There are two broat ah~o?~ption bands: natnely, around 2600 and 3600A regions. Whet? compared with the reflectance spectra of the constituent oxides, namely, Y2O3, V205, Eu2 03, the absorption bands of the tnatvix and the phosphor in the short- and long-wavelength ultraviolet regions can be interpreted as due to charge-transfer processes involving i) Y-O and ii) 17-0, respecti~~ely. The excitation spectrum' of the phosphor has two broad bands with peaks at about 2600 and 3600A regions. U can be postulated that enevgy absorbed under short- crud long-wavelength ultraziolet excitatzon, respectzcely, by Y-0 and V-O parts of the niatrix is transferred by radcatio~zless process to EU+3 ions. Thzs postulate can empirically be proved on the basis of the spectra of the systems (YVO4,-YPO4,):Eu. PO? ~ons do not have' any appreciable absorption in the short or long uv regions. When P0't3 ions are substitlited for v0i3 ions in YVO,:Eu phosphors, the absorption and excitation in the lo~zg uv region are gradually reduced. Ailoreover, the £«+3 emission under 3650A excitation is decreased zuitlz increase in PO^ content, lt~lzereas the emission under 253711 excitation remains esserztially constant with as IILUCIL as 60 mole pct of YPO, in YVO,:En. EUROPIUM-activated yttrium vanadate (YV04:Eu) is a well-known phosptor.'-3 When excited by cathode rays, 2537, or 3650A radiations, YV04:Eu emits typical narrow-band spectrum of EU'3 fluorescence in the region of 5900 to 7100A, a very strong maximum occurring at about 6190A. This emission is considered to be due to 5Do — 7F2 transition of excite: EU*3 in 4f state. Moreover, the emission under 3650A excitation increases with temperature markedly. Because of these properties, YV04:Eu phosphor finds wide application in industries, namely, in color television tube, laser, and high-pressure mercury-vapor lamps. It is the purpose of this paper 1) to present the empirical study of the mechanism of absorption and excitation of YV04:Eu phosphor by ultraviolet radiation, and 2) to offer an explanation for the process of emission. It should be mentioned that a theoretical discussion on the mechanism of absorption in terms of the crystal or ligand field theory is beyond the scope of this paper. Empirical studies presented here are based primarily on spectroscopic and crystal-chemical investigations. EXPERIMENTAL i) Preparation of Materials. The synthesis of vanadate phosphorinvolves preparation of (Yi-.tEuj^Oj, blending the mixed oxide with an oxidic compound of vanadium, such as V205 or NH4V03, and firing the mixture at about 1000°C for several hours when YVO4:Eu forms as a primary phase. (Y1-xEux)203 compositions are prepared by coprecipitation of oxalates, and igniting them at about 1000°C. The vanadium compound is added in excess of the stoichiometric proportion for fluxing purposes. The charge is cooled, ground, and the excess of vanadium is removed by a hot wash (-80°C) of alkali or ammonia. Y(VP)04:Eu samples are prepared by mixing (Yi-xEux)203 with stoichio-metric proportions of (NH4)2HP04 and the vanadium compound. The mixtures are prefired at 700" to 800°C for 1 or 2 hr, then ground and refired at 1150°C. The firings of the phosphors are done in silica crucibles, and the homogeneity of the final products checked by X-ray diffraction analysis. ii) Spectroscopic Measurements. Diffuse reflectance sqectra of the samples within the range 2500 to 7000A are obtained by using CaF2 as standard in Cary Recording Spectrophotometer, Model No. 14. The emission spectra from phosphor plaques, excited under different ultraviolet sources, are obtained by a direct-recording spectroradiometer4 adapted with a grating monochromator with nearly constant dispersion. Maximym sensitivity in the spectral region from 2500 to 7000A is obtained with a quartz-windowed, S-20 response p$otomultiplier. The total' band pass is kept about 30A. The spectra are calibrated against the light from a standard tungsten filament lamp reflected from a magnesium-oxide plaque. Brightness data given throughout this report $re measured from the height of the main peak (6190A) of the emission spectra. The excitation spectra are measured using sodium salicy-late as standard. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The diffuse reflectance spectra of both pure and activated YV04, along with their constituent components, are shown in Fig. 1. YVO4 shows two broad absorption bands, namely, around 2500 and 3600A, respectively. Since there is little difference between the reflectance spectraoof YVO4 and YVO,:Eu in the uv region (2500 to 4000A), it can be postulated that excitation of the phosphor is mainly due to absorption by the matrix, i.e., YVO4. The question, now, is whether the matrix (Yv04) is excited as a whole, or different components are responsible for the two absorption bands. The rate of dissolution of steel bars in molten pig iron has been measured experimentally in the temperature range 2300° to 2650° F. The rate of solution is shown to be a .function of bath composition, temperature, and stirring. A kinetic model based on carbon diffusion in the liquid phase has been derived to fit the experimental results. THE rate of scrap melting has long been an important variable in steelmaking operations. With the advent of the oxygen steelmaking process and the accompanying shorter heat times, the rate of scrap melting has now become one of the rate-limiting factors in steel production. As observed in commercial practice, the solution rate is influenced by the compositions of liquid and solid, the temperature, agitation, and time. However, no definitive work has been done on the Fe-C system, and there is very little information in the literature regarding the relative effects of these variables in steelmaking systems. A number of questions have been raised in regard to scrap utilization in basic oxygen steelmaking operations. Consideration has been given to the optimum size and shape of scrap, and to the use of preheated scrap as a means for decreasing the pig-iron requirement in oxygen blowing. The determination of an optimum scrap practice for a specific installation depends to a large extent upon the economics of the scrap market and also upon the behavior of scrap in the vessel. The present research was undertaken as a preliminary study in evaluating the behavior of steel in a pig-iron bath under various conditions of temperature, composition, and agitation, as might be encountered in oxygen converter operations or in any steelmaking operation where scrap behavior is an important process variable. Related studies have been carried out on non-ferrous systems. The solution rate of solid aluminum in a molten A1-Si alloy has been studied.' Furthermore, the increasing use of liquid metals has created considerable interest in studies related to dissolution of a solid in a liquid, or mass transfer taking place between a solid interface and a liquid metallic phase.2-10 In an effort to clarify the relative importance of factors influencing the dissolution of scrap in Fe-C alloys, this paper presents the results of a study of the rate of dissolution of a low-carbon steel cylinder in a molten Fe-C bath at various bath compositions, temperatures, and conditions of agitation. An attempt has been made to determine the mechanism of solution, and a model has been derived to fit the experimental results. The rate of heat transfer between the molten pig-iron bath and the solid-steel cylinder has also been studied. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A molten bath of pig iron (nominal composition 4.2 pct C, 0.5 pct Mn, 0.8 pct Si)* was held in a 200- *In view of the fact that the composition of the pig-iron bath was slowly changing with time because of steel dissolution and reaction with the surrounding atmosphere, intermittent samples of the liquid bath were taken throughout each experiment, Table 1. lb induction melting unit. The internal diameter of the furnace was 8-1/2 in. and the bath depth approximately 14 in. Cold-finished 1020 steel cylinders of 1/2-, 3/4-, 1-, 1-1/2-, and 2-in. diameters were cut into 1 -ft lengths for use as test specimens. One end of each bar was machined to fit a hand-driven, mechanical stirring device which rested on top of the furnace. This fixture permitted 7 to 8 in. of the bar to be immersed in the melt. The steel cylinders were cleaned to free the surface of grease and oxide. The rods, at ambient temperature, were immersed into the molten pig-iron bath. The melt temperatures studied in this investigation were 2300°, 2500°, and 2650°F. Different agitation conditions were achieved by operating with a) the power to the furnace, giving induction stirring; b) induction stirring plus mechanical stirring, using hand rotation with a chain and sprocket assembly at approximately 200 rpm; c) mechanical stirring alone with the power off; and d) the power off and no mechanical stirring resulting in minimum agitation, i.e., only that caused by natural convection currents in the bath. The samples were immersed in the melt for prescribed times ranging from 30 sec up to 6 min. Immersion times were measured with a stopwatch and temperature control of the melt was achieved by power adjustment following temperature measurement with an optical pyrometer. The measurements with the calibrated pyrometer were checked out to within less than 10°F with simultaneous thermocouple measurements. Following immersion, the bars were water-quenched and the diameters were measured with a micrometer at several positions on the reduced area, and by volumetric displacement. The trend initiated in January 1936, of stabilized gasoline prices, increased demand and extraordinary drilling activity, continued in California during the year 1937. Crude prices were maintained during the year at the highest level since September 1930. Wildcat activity with resultant new discoveries and development of proven acreage were greater than in any year since 1928. Many fields in California in former years have been produced at full capacity, with consequent loss of reservoir energy, but at the present time continued activity is maintained to develop adequate reserves, so that production in these fields can be taken at a rate to correspond with good operating practice. Naturally, this good operating practice will be influenced to some degree by gas outlets and, in certain instances perhaps, by oil outlets. In any event, these last two controlling features will result in favorable rather than detrimental operation. In fields producing from great depths, ultimate production will be practically limited to the flowing and compressor life of the well, since there is as yet no economical method for pumping wells below depths of approximately 7000 ft. Experience has shown, however, that such pumping difficulties will be overcome and that production secured by pumping will add some to reserves established on the flowing life of the wells. California continued to operate under voluntary curtailment, but with unlimited transfers of allowable between various fields. Even though there was at all times considerable production above the Umpire's established quota, a constantly increasing demand reduced storage during the year. This increasing demand was due mainly to the rapid rise in Pacific foreign shipments from May to September. It is questionable, however, whether this favorable condition will be maintained over a prolonged period. (See Fig. 1.) ALMOST every metallurgist who has given the Howe Memorial Lecture has had a personal contact with the distinguished gentleman to whose honor this hour is devoted. Unfortunately for me, such personal contacts were not possible. However, in the preparation of a thesis on the open-hearth process, one of my earliest tasks was to make a survey of the literature, and it was from Professor Howe's Metallurgy of Iron and Steel that I drew a number of references to previous work which formed the foundation for my reading. In his volume there is such a complete exposition of the then current thought on the subject of slags and on their role in the elimination of phosphorus from steel that I feel no hesitation in discussing in this Howe Lecture the subject of "Slag Control." In the present era of close specification, the drive for uniformity of product, and the close inspection of the product and of the cost sheet, the utmost efforts must be made to control the steelmaking variables to the best advantage of the steel producer. One of the major variables is the slag in the furnace and its effect upon the composition and quality of the metal. What advantages are to be gained from slag control? In the broad sense the advantages must be tremendous, because the very foundations of good steel melting are based on "shaping up" the slag to a point where, with proper temperature, the heat is ready for the final additions. Every melter works toward these ends through his experience with innumerable heats of steel. The elimination of undesirable constituents such as phosphorus and sulphur is entirely a matter of slag composition and physical nature, a point well known for over half a century. The role played by the slag in assisting in proper heat transfer from roof and flame to the steel has been equally well known. In more recent years there has come the problem of oxygen control in the more accurate gaug-ing of additions for making high-grade rimmed steel for the new strip mills, and in the deoxidizing additions for grain-size control and cleanli-ness of forging steels, both carbon and alloy. In this problem the oxidiz-ing characteristics of the slag are of prime importance.

GENTLEMEN Herewith are transmitted reports from the Treasurer and of the principal standing committees of the Institute. To these special reports members are referred for details as to the year's work. Despite the unfavorable business conditions obtaining throughout the year, the Institute was able to carry on its various activities without curtailment and without drawing on the surplus accumulated through previous years. In fact, small additions were made to the Life, Member¬ship and various other funds. It is highly desirable that such additions should continue to be made, especially to the Life Membership fund, for reasons reported last year. At present, money must be used from current receipts in order to enable the Institute to fulfill its obligations to those who on joining the organization commuted their dues by a single payment. In addition, with the passage of years the number increases of those who have paid dues forty years or more and who, by reason of age or dis¬ability, are unable longer to practise their profession. These men have supported the Institute through their active professional life and it would be a pity to lose them as members through resignation or for failure to keep up their dues. In accordance with the By-laws the Board has authority to advance such members, on application, to the Honor Roll of Senior Members and to relieve them from further payment of dues. It has been the policy of the Board to do this liberally, but to keep up this, as well as to meet other obligations, it is necessary for money to be provided. It has been estimated by the Treasurer that nearly $50,000 additional should be placed in the Life Membership fund as soon as possi¬ble to meet these obligations without using current income and to that end it is necessary, not only to avoid running behind currently but to earn, if possible, some surplus each year. The small amount transferred to the Life Membership fund from surplus this year was, as a matter of fact, made possible by certain members paying personally bills that were properly chargeable to the Treasury. Such generosity is common among those active in Institute work and probably no year would have closed with a surplus except for it.

DATA in this report enable comparisons to be made within the bituminous coal industry and comparison as well with copper and steel in respect to capacity and overdevelopment. The conclusions reached from the data will tend to correct numerous current misconceptions. The data have been prepared by various members of the Coal and Coke Committee of the A.I.M.E., from the most authentic sources avail¬able, and cover the period 1913-1924 wherever possible. CAPACITY AND OVERDEVELOPMENT Table 1 shows statistics for the industry, mainly from the U. S. Geological Survey sources, but partly from the U. S. Coal Commission reports. The mine capacity with equipment and labor as of given date is calculated for each state by obtaining the total man days worked as reported by the operators, and dividing this figure into the total production, getting the production per man day; this figure times the number of men employed times 308 (a theoretical full working year) equals estimated full-time capacity. Two major objections are made to this method-one that the total number of men employed is used instead of the number actually working, and the other that the number of days used only deducts Sundays and five holidays. Covering the first, the same number of men is used in estimating capacity as is used in actual production, and this condition exists at all times. Regarding the second, the opinion is general among coal men that 280 days is as great a figure as should be used, as it is practically impossible to keep any mine working full time at the same daily rate as when it is working part time. The capacity, as estimated on this basis, is much more nearly the true capacity, although even with present railroad efficiency this amount of coal could not be moved.

W. I. Garms-—The authors state that when they added 11 tons of balls to the 45 pct volume ball load, the power needle did not budge. The question arises as to whether any increase in capacity accompanied the 11-ton addition. It is hardly conceivable that all of the balls making up the l l-ton addition were sterile. However, as the work done in the ball mill is not by kilo-watthours per se or balls per se but by kilowatthour-balls, it is possible that the kilowatthourballs in the mill before the ll-ton addition had a different amperage, voltage or robustage than those in the mill after the addition and that the overall outcome was that equal work was done before and after the addition. The authors can keep the efficiency that they got with the 45 pct volume 1-in. ball charge and get additional capacity by putting more kilowatthourballs to work in the form of the addition of 11 tons of 2-in. balls to the present ball charge, and subsequent makeup additions by weight of 20 pct 2-in. balls and 80 pct 1-in. balls. J. F. Myers (authors' reply)-—Mr. Garms points his finger at the 11 tons of "sterile" balls added to the Tri-cone mill. A fact so interesting to us that we felt it should be reported. Clearly, ball slippage at the existing mill speed prevented any further transfer of power from the shell to the ball mass. We agree that the kilowatthourballs would increase, were we charging rough 2-in. balls as suggested by Mr. Garms. The assumption is, of course, that we would get a corresponding increase in work done. Our reported data (CIME meeting, Vancouver, 1946) shows a gain of work accomplished of 7.6 pct as we decreased the ball size from 2 in. to 1% in. and a further gain of work accomplished of 2.1 pct when we went from 1 % in. to 1 in. The small ball results reported by H. R. Banks at Chapman Camp are also very convincing. In the case of 2-in. balls they would take the conventional ball path and start cascading.
