IN smelting copper, lead, and silver ores, it is scarcely possible in every case to make analyses of the various parcels of ore, with the view of combining these and the fluxes so accurately as to yield, in the furnace, slags of exactly the most favorable composition. This is even more difficult with ores which require previous calcination, or with mattes which have been roasted in heaps. Even in cases where the greatest pains have been taken and the most elaborate calculations made beforehand, it frequently happens that variations in the working of the furnace interfere with the result so much desired. Generally, the practical metallurgist must be content with ascertaining the average composition of his ores and fluxes, making a calculation once for all as to the most advantageous mixture, and leaving slight changes in its composition to be taken care of as it is passing through the furnace. The various products then afford him the best material whereon to base his judgment as to the manner in which his smelting mixture is working. Of course the character of the slag is one of his chief guides, but it is not always possible from its outward characters alone to form a correct judgment as to its composition. Neither would it be possible or practicable to apply chemical analysis for this purpose, as it would be impossible to wait for its results while working a furnace. In tunneling or mining where hydraulic shields, moles, or rock boring equipment is used lasers such as those shown guide the production machine by providing a continuous and visible line and grade reference. In this application the laser may be mounted in the heading, preferably somewhere above spring line. If we view the circular heading as a compass in the vertical plane with 0º referencing at the crown of the heading and 180º on the invert, then it might be said that the laser may be mounted anywhere from 270º through 0º to 90º. The laser is generally mounted 2 to 3 ft off the wall or the crown of the heading by means of a bracket that may be attached directly to the liner plate. In cases where no liner plate is used, then brackets may be bolted directly into the ribs, or grouted directly into the rock. Once the laser is in position the beam is projected to the face. Two points must be surveyed upstream between the laser and the face which define line and grade. Targets may be suspended beneath each of these points approximately 2 to 3 ft. These targets may be circular or rectangular with a surface area which approximates 16 sq in. Each of these two targets should have a ½ to ¾ in. hole drilled directly in their center. When the laser is adjusted so that the beam passes through the holes in each of the two targets, the laser beam itself will parallel the center line of the tunnel and become a visible line and grade reference over the total beam projection.

ALL the ores of any kind whatsoever, even though they be semiminerals and may be perfect in their qualities, have to be recognized by experienced and good sorters. These men must have a detailed as well as a general experience of the metals so that in this first preparation, which is most important, they may know how to distinguish the good from the bad, and to know what is rock and what is ore. They must use patience in this, breaking and cutting and king the ore from the earth. They must separate the good ore from the bad, avoiding as far as possible every occasion for poisoning it by traces of other ores, evil stones, or other things inimical to its nature. Finally, with the judgment of the eye and with tools, and, in the end, by roasting it with fire and then quenching it with water, or by washing and re-washing it, the ore must be made as pure as possible in order to join it better with the companions that seem to be the most beneficial for its needs. Ores would be useless stones without smelting. Therefore, when it is certain that such ores are of divers elemental mixtures, aid must be given to each one according to the evil ingredients [47v] that harm it. But because such evil qualities are things that are often not apparent to the eye, such as too great a burning, or too much earthiness so that when they are alone the fire burns these ores before it melts them, it is necessary to temper them with other materials. In the exploration of a copper deposit by drilling, obvious advantages are to be gained from a distinction between primary and secondary ore.' Perhaps the chief of these is the aid which such a distinction renders in determining where a given hole should stop. The copper assay, often a sufficient guide, cannot always be exclusively relied upon. Primary ores may extend downward indefinitely and may fluctuate in value independently of depth: if primary ores are consistently lean for a considerable vertical distance, there is little reason to expect that, still deeper, they will increase to the commercial grade; on the other hand, rich primary ores may persist uninterruptedly downward or may come in again below a lean interval. Secondary ores, however, have a comparatively limited vertical extent; in a large way enrichment decreases with depth and finally gives out. It follows then, that when a hole descends from profitable ore into ore of less than the commercial minimum, the practical significance of the situation depends upon whether this decrease results from a decrease in secondary enrichment or is a variation in primary content: if the copper of the ore passed through has been chiefly secondary, little is gained in the average case by extending the hole much below the point at which the commercial limit is reached; but, when copper is chiefly primary, due weight must be given to the possibility that, still deeper, the ore may again improve. Henry Marion Howe, in whose memory we are gathered together, was one of the great thinkers who develop from time to time to whom is given the rare gift of synthesis. Analysis is given to few, but synthesis, the ability to show the relation of all parts to each other and thus to give a clear picture of the whole, is reserved for the very few. Analysis can be achieved by honesty, intelligence, and industry, but synthesis is only given to genius. Professor Howe's crowning achievement is the picture of the whole iron-carbon series shown in Fig. I, which places steel, malleable, gray iron, mottled and chilled irons in their proper relation to each other and shows the essential unity of the series. Perhaps his best statement of the case is found on page go of the Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron in these words: " Each member of the gray cast-iron series consists of the metallic matrix approximately equivalent to that member of the steel-white-cast-iron series to which it corresponds in percentage of combined carbon with its continuity broken up—by masses of graphite ..." Apparently he had taken considerable interest in this idea around the turn of the century, for he refers to a discussion at the Franklin Institute in I900 in which he said: "Though many others had probably conceived this relation between the steels and cast irons, it was here enunciated for the first time, so far as I know. It was received with great incredulity." The concept was explained in some detail in a paper on "The Constitution of Cast Iron" presented before the A.S.T.M. in 1902 when Professor Howe was retiring president of that young society. In the discussion Dr. Sauveur stated that he was "very well acquainted with Professor Howe's theory of the constitution of cast iron," and went on to say that while he "shared it to the fullest extent, some foundrymen . . . claim cast iron is a metal entirely different from steel . . . that steel and cast iron have very little in common, and that therefore the knowledge gained in the study of steel is of little or no value in the study of cast iron." Dr. Moldenke, in discussing the same paper, said he had been working on the same theory for 12 years but he laid no claim to publication. Discussing the difference in the micro-structure of the metallic matrix, Professor Howe pointed out that "such minor structural differences are indeed to be expected, because of the difference in the conditions under which these constituents are generated. "One difference in these conditions is that the steel of most micrographs has been either forged or at least treated thermally in such a way as to give a new structure radically different from that which formed during the initial solidification, whereas the cast irons have not. WASTE of coal, or perhaps more properly the percentage of its recovery in mining, has keenly interested me during an experience of over a half century in coal mining. In the early part of that time and until a few years after World War I the use of better mining plans and supervision resulted in an increased recovery. Since then, and particularly since controlled prices have been effective and mechanized mining has been extensively practiced, the tendency has all been toward lesser recovery in mining. The purpose of this paper is not to criticize the methods being used, which after all are the result of economic forces, nor to point to any particular mining method or to any locality where the best recovery is obtained, but to call attention to the tremendous waste of our national coal resources that is constantly continuing. A possible method of reducing this loss will be suggested, but without any illusions that it will be followed or that such attention will be paid to it. AVERAGE RECOVERY The actual average percentage of recovery of coal in the ground is not known. Many papers giving figures of recovery have been published but no definite base of measurement has been agreed upon by those presenting the data. As an example, the Pittsburgh bed can be considered-it has produced a greater output than any other and has been sold or leased at higher prices in place than any other coal bed. Over a large part of its area where high prices have prevailed it has been customary for many years to draw pillars. In these mines it has been usually assumed that the average recovery was higher than in other beds and percentages of recovery of 85 to 95 per cent are usually said to be realized. In all of these mines, however, it has been customary to leave from 4 to 8 in. in the bottom, and 10 to 16 in. in the roof; thus from 14 to 24 in. of coal has been left in the mines out of a total seam thickness of about 96 in., or 15 to 25 per cent of the total coal. No attempt is made to mine this coal for metallurgical purposes, owing to its impurities, although this unmined coal is of excellent quality and better than much of the coal used for steam purposes. If we add to this discard the coal usually lost in mining and those parts of the bed that must be left because of bad seam conditions, barrier pillars, reservations for buildings, gas and oil wells, one can easily see that the actual recovery from this bed cannot be more than 65 to 75 per cent. In addition, the rooster or rider or wild coal over the mining bed often 3 to 4 ft. of coal, high in ash and sulphur but still good steam coal-is hardly ever mined, nor is any attempt made to mine it. It is safe to say that from a broad economic viewpoint not more than 50 to 60 per cent of the fuel value of this great seam is actually being recovered.

PROPERTY of Malartic Gold Fields Ltd. is situa-ated in the great clay belt in the northern part of the Province of Quebec. This belt represents the floor of the glacial lake Barlow-Ojibway. The clay blanket has a gently rolling, almost flat surface, with here and there projecting knobs and ridges that outline the large irregularities of the surface on which the clay was deposited. At irregular intervals glacial eskers dominate the landscape. The ore-bearing country rock is covered by strata of clay, sand, and silt to a depth varying to 40 ft. There are serious structural problems when it is necessary to place loads of unequal intensities on this surface to support buildings and machinery for a modern mining plant. Earlier mining companies and their engineers paid little attention to the science of soil mechanics, partly because they believed it unnecessary and partly because they knew little of the subject. The results are evident in some of the tottering structures in older camps. Careful analysis of soil problems is well worth-while, since cost of foundations may vary from 20 to 50 pct of the final cost of a structure. Low operating and maintenance costs can be achieved only in this way. If it is definitely established that a plant will be in operation for only a few months, this limited time factor will probably influence the design of the foundation, and rightly so. If sensitive and complickted equipment is to be mounted on these foundations and the plant is to operate for several years, there should be a thorough study of foundations and a very careful design. A familiar problem is presented by the difficulty of operating a permanent plant originally designed for a few months' work. The engineer must beware of these hazards and disassociate himself from them if he cannot prevail on the promoter to spend the proper amount for a thorough foundation study. Laws of certain provinces and states hold the engineer equally responsible with the contractor for any 'damage that may be caused to building through inadequate study-ignordnce of the facts is no excuse in the eyes of the law. Types of Soil: The engineer should be familiar with such terms as silt, clay, peat, and varved clay, as well as perpafrost, especially if he is to work in the far northern reaches of the country. He should also be familiar with soil attributes such as porosity, texture, consistency, permeability, compressibility, consolidation, and shearing resistance. The design of any foundation requires an accurate knowledge of the physical properties and location of the soils involved. Older textbooks on the subject outline various empirical methods to determine the carrying power of soil. Tables are given in reference books. The modern ehgineer should be wary of these modes of thinking. He should analyze his problem carefully, calculate to what depth of soil the loads may be transmitted, and then check the bearing value of all soils to that or greater depths. Magnesium, the eighth most abundant element in the earth's crust, is found widely distributed in a variety of minerals. Among the more commercially important ones are magnesite (MgCO,), brucite (Mg[OH],) , dolomite (CaMg[CO,],), and the salts magnesium sulfate and chloride often found in natural brines. Among other commercially important magnesium-containing minerals are olivine ([MgFe],- SiO,) , talc (H,Mg,[SiO,],) , and serpentine (H,Mg,Si,O,) . These are valuable because of desirable characteristics given them by the magnesium content and its placement in the particular crystal structure. These minerals are the raw materials for a host of products including magnesium metal and several grades of magnesia or magnesia- containing materials for refractories, fluxes, fillers, insulation, cements, decolorants, fertilizers, and chemicals. Considering only those minerals valued for their magnesia or magnesium content, over 85% of the material tonnages are processed to be used as refractories. Dolomite, which is used in enormous tonnages for its physical properties in construction, has an important use as a refractory raw material in its own right and, after calcination, as a precipitant for magnesium hydroxide, which is an intermediate for the production of magnesia or magnesium metal. Magnesia from the reaction of calcined dolomite (or limestone) with sea-water or magnesium-containing brines has supplanted much of the production of magnesia from mined magnesite, particularly in the United States. The best known of the minerals directly and widely exploited for magnesia content is magnesite, one of the calcite group of rhombo- hedral carbonates which includes calcite (Ca- CO,) , siderite (FeCO,) , and rhodocrosite (MnCO,) among others. The members of this group enter into a wide range of substitutional solid solutions when the positive ions have similar radii. The radii of magnesium and iron ions are within 6% of each other; hence, magnesite and siderite form a complete series of which breunnerite (ferroan magnesite) is a well-known end member. However, the radius of calcium ion is 36% larger than that of magnesium ion, and only limited substitution exists at each end of the MgC0,-Cam, series. Dolomite is not a member of the calcite group, but results when calcium and magnesium ions alternate in equal number in an ordered structure among carbonate ions. The result of these relationships is that calcite and dolomite, often found intermixed with magnesite, occur commonly as identifiable crystal entities which can often be separated to a varying degree from the magnesite by various beneficiation techniques. Magnesite, when pure, contains 47.8% MgO and 52.2% CO,. The pure mineral is sometimes, but rarely, found as transparent crystals resembling calcite, but, preponderantly, magnesite contains variable amounts of the carbonates, oxides, and silicates of iron, calcium, manganese, and aluminum. Magnesite may be either crystalline or "amorphous" (cryptocrystalline). The crystalline form has a hardness of 3.5 to 4.0. The color may range from white to black with shades of yellqw, blue, red, or gray. The color is not a fundamentally significant indicator of purity, but in a given deposit, an experienced person can often roughly grade magnesite by assessing color and crystallinity. The kyanite minerals, including kyanite, silimanite, and andalusite, are anhydrous aluminum silicates with the formula Al2O3SiO2. lumortierite and topaz are also included in this group because they are closely allied in composition and thermal behavior. However, leither are mined commercially today. They ire typical metamorphic minerals which are found in metamorphic rocks on every continent. Kyanite minerals are prized chiefly for their refractoriness and are important components in a broad range of acid refractory products, especially in mortars and castables. World production of kyanite minerals is currently about 250,000 tpy and has been increasing at the rate of 3 to 8% a year for many {ears (Anon, 1972). While kyanite minerals lave widespread occurrence, the consumption of kyanite minerals is concentrated in the relatively few highly industrialized areas where refractories are manufactured, and which in turn are typically close to the major iron and steel producing regions of the world. Thus northern Europe, England, the United States, and Japan are the principal consumers of refractories and kyanite minerals. Of these countries only the U.S. is a significant producer. The largest use for domestic kyanite, both raw and calcined, is in the manufacture of refractory mortars, cements, castables, and plastic ramming mixes. In these applications kyanite constitutes from 10 to 40% of the mixture, the balance being refractory clays and coarser grog materials. A certain proportion of raw kyanite is used to offset the shrinking of the clay binder, whereas the calcined kyanite is used in the coarser sizes for body. Certain high grade refractory shapes and kiln furniture are composed chiefly of graded sizes of calcined kyanite bonded with a little ball clay. In most applications, however, kyanite is used only to fortify the mix or as a minor ingredient. Some manufacturers of mullite brick use domestic calcined kyanite for the fine-grained portion of the brick, but seldom in quantities exceeding 10% by weight. Kyanite is used by ceramic manufacturers of wall tile and sanitary ware to offset shrinkage and cracking after firing. Indian kyanite has traditionally been used to make the coarse grog sizes needed for the manufacture of mullite brick, and for the grog portions of mortar, cement, and castable mixes. It has been largely replaced, however, by synthetic mullite, high fired flint, and diaspore clay or calcined bauxite for other applications. Indian kyanite is available in lump as well as in granules and concentrates, as are sillimanite materials from India and South Africa. Andalusite is available as 8 mesh granules and as fines with chemical analyses not unlike those of domestic kyanites. From time to time and from place to place minor amounts of other aluminum silicate minerals such as dumortier- ite, topaz, and pyrophyllite have been made available at various prices and specifications, but have not been significant factors in the refractory industry. IT is well known that the excellent mica from Brazil played a most vital role in World War II. Increased production from Brazil was necessary and with the assent of the Brazilian Government engineers from the United States went down to study the problem. One of the means advocated by a former Chief of Metals and Minerals Branch of the Board of Economic Warfare, Mr. Carl Schwegler, was the use of stripping machinery. On a pegmatite dike favorable for stripping, a small number of miners could produce as much mica per day as an underground mine employing many times the same number of men. TYPE OF DEPOSIT FAVORABLE The most favorable type of pegmatite for stripping is that which lies more or less parallel to the surface of the slope of a hill. Pegmatite dikes that cut directly into a hill are not suitable for stripping except where a long outcrop extends along the slope. Then just the outcrop could be stripped to some advantage. The ratio at no time should be greater than I:3; i.e., I cu. m. of pegmatite to 3 cu. m. of waste, unless the pegmatite was extremely rich throughout the dike. THE ECONOMICS OF STRIPPING When a mineral is badly needed to win a war, not too much heed can be paid to costs. The object is to produce rapidly and in quantity. Again, a deposit containing a superior grade of mica may be worked although the pegmatite is more costly to work than another deposit containing a considerably greater amount of poor-grade mica. For example: one deposit may have a little mica that will run II per cent good stain and better when trimmed and contain 2 kg. of crude mica per cubic meter of pegmatite, while another may run 0.2 per cent of good stain and better, and have a mica content of 10 kg. per cubic meter. A number of stripping projects were found in the vicinity of Raul Soares, Minas Gerais. These were sampled in the various old workings by cutting out a cubic meter of pegmatite and saving the usable mica. Because of the proximity to the surface of most stripping projects, about 34 per cent only of the mica is good for trimming. The other 66 per cent is too badly weathered to be of use. In Table I are given data collected on five properties near Raul Soares. In Table I, "value per cubic meter of pegmatite" means the value of the qualified mica obtainable. This does not include the half trimmed and splittings. By "value per cubic meter of matter" is meant the value of the qualified mica per cubic meter of material excavated; i.e. both waste and pegmatite. This is the figure that should he used to determine whether the operation will be profitable or not, as the cost of stripping is about $0.I4 per cubic meter. Transient pressure behavior of wells intersected by a single vertical fracture has been examined by means of a heat pow analogy. Results are correlated in terms of dimensionless pressure change and dimensionless transient time. The resulting curves are found to lie between the dimensionless curves for a cylindrical well and a line source when effective well radius is expressed as one-fourth of the total fracture length. Results are also shown for various degrees of afterflow. Use of the curves provides a means of determining reservoir permeability, wellbore radius, and thereby fracture length, even when the final slope of the transient curve is not obtained. Superposition of curves may be used to confirm existence of vertical fractures in the reservoir adjacent to the well or to indicate a damaged zone on the fracture face. INTRODUCTION Hydraulic fracturing has become a standard well completion practice for the purpose of increasing flow. Results are normally gauged in terms of some sort of "stabilized" flow rate established before and after the treatment. This procedure may be misleading because pressures in or around the well do not become "stabilized" during the test period. Transient pressure tests on fractured wells can overcome the objections to stabilized flow tests by indicating when a stable pressure gradient is reached. In addition, the transient pressure tests can be used to determine formation flow capacity and effective wellbore radius. The effective wellbore radius may be used as a measure of the success of the fracturing operation. The slope and position of the transient pressure-log time curve may be used to determine the flow capacity and wellbore size after sufficient lapse of time so that the pressure gradient in the vicinity of the fractures becomes constant. However, in tight reservoirs or in short tests this condition may not be reached. Presence of the fractures in tight reservoirs may cause a constantly increasing slope to the transient pressure curve. If this slope is picked too soon, formation flow capacity will appear high and the fracture size will appear too small. This paper is intended to clarify the early transient behavior of vertically fractured wells. It shows how formation flow capacity and wellbore size can be determined even though the maximum slope of the transient pressure curve is not obtained during the test. Development of the techniques of transient pressure analysis for wells has been summarized by Perrine.' He reviews the various definitions of wellbore effects such as skin effect, productivity ratio, damage factor and condition ratio. In the present paper, use of these terms is avoided by defining an effective wellbore size. For the fractured well this effective wellbore size is larger than the actual wellbore. Assumptions made are constant flow rate at the well, constant fluid compressibility, constant fluid mobility and uniform porosity and formation thickness. From the basic differential equations of flow, two different solutions may be obtained. The first, the line source solution, is commonly used in transient pressure analysis.' It expresses the change in pressure at any radius due to withdrawal or injection of fluid at the line source from an infinite reservoir at uniform initial pressure. FLOW and fracture are admittedly complicated phenomena of which we are yet only partially masters. There is not even universal agreement as to the details of the language best adapted merely to describe the phenomena, to say nothing of any theory. Certain points of view, however, are widely held, and there are certain general expectations as to what sort of procedures will prove permissible. A complete description of any situation involving fracture would demand a complete history of all the variables in the control of the experimenter. The experimenter endeavors so to choose his independent variables that they are adequate to determine completely the situation in the sense that when an experiment is repeated on the same initial material and with the independent variables running through the same sequence, all the other measurable properties of the system will also run through the same course. It is, I think, the universal conviction that when we are dealing with phenomena of flow and fracture, the most important of the necessary variables are the external forces acting on the various parts of the body; when the force history repeats, with certain obvious restrictions such as that temperature must be constant and non- mechanical forces, such as magnetic field, must be small enough to be ineffective, then the history of all measurable properties will repeat; in particular the alteration of geometrical shape due to flow will run through the same course, and when fracture comes, the character of the fracture will be reproduced. Complete mastery of merely the descriptive aspects of flow and fracture would demand the ability to predict the entire course of flow and complete characterization of the final fracture for every possible combination of forces, varying in time in all possible ways, when applied to bodies of all possible shapes. This full situation is obviously of prohibitive complexity. The first stage in reduction to manage- able simplicity is to resolve the total situation into the sum of contributions made by small elements. Our thesis is that if each of the elements is adequately characterized, the behavior of the whole system is fixed. The element is usually taken of a simple geometrical shape, suggested by the mathematics best adapted to the particular situation. The forces acting across the faces of the elements are ultimately determined by the forces acting across the free faces of the whole system. The detailed process of finding the precise forces on the faces of all the elements in terms of the external forces involves the use of a special mathematical invention, the stress, a constructional quantity consisting of six components. The stress at any point in the body is determined by both the external force system and by the physical properties of the body at all points; quite different stresses prevail at the interior of bodies of the same shape under the same external forces in the elastic and plastic ranges. THE melting department is the heart of the foundry. From it clean metal flows to the molding floor, in the right quantity, at the right time and at a sufficiently low cost-or, if not, the foundry fails to thrive. Since it is our purpose here to discuss present-day melting practice in the foundry, it may be well at the start to emphasize the wide differences in foundries and the conditions under which they must operate in order to reach the goal stated in the first paragraph. In every foundry, large or small, jobbing or captive, the same factors must be dealt with but they are of varying consequence and must be dealt with in varying ways in different foundries. Particularly in the nonferrous industry, there is so wide a variation in the composition of alloys used and in the character of castings made that no one type of furnace, nor any one method of operation, can be expected to produce the best results at all times. The present discussion will not attempt to include all nonferrous metals. It is intended to cover only the copper-base alloys in which copper is the dominant element, most of which are commonly known as brass or bronze. The discussion is further limited to the melting of these copper-base alloys for use in sand-casting foundries. Die-casting plants, the brass-rolling mills and certain other metal industries have melting problems peculiar to those industries, which will not be considered here. The following considerations are elemental in all foundries and are listed in what is believed to be the relative order of their present-day importance: I. The melting department must meet the foundry's requirement for dean, fluid metal, of specified composition and purity, at a temperature suitable for the work the foundry has in hand. This is the prime consideration in any foundry, at any time, anywhere. 2. Working conditions surrounding the melting furnaces and attending their use must be good. 3. The cost of molten metal at the mold must be as low as possible. 4. The operating characteristics of the furnaces must be sufficiently flexible, to meet normal variations in foundry requirements. 5. The operation and maintenance of the melting equipment must not require more skill and experience than is available in the particular foundry in question. METAL QUALITY It is not a function of the melting furnace to refine or improve the quality of the metal but simply to melt it without impairing its quality. Good practice requires, therefore, that care must be taken to supply the melting department with metal of inherently good quality, assured by specification or otherwise, having all the properties necessary to produce the castings desired. An alloy contains a number of primary elements, which must be present in definite proportions if the castings made from it are to have the desired properties. If the castings are made to a customer's specification, this will state the range within which these principal elements (for example, copper, tin, lead and zinc) are permitted to vary.

The recovery of uranium from acid leach slurries by continuous ion exchange, or solvent extraction using sieve-plate pulse columns, is compared. Differences in processing costs are of prime concern and can be related to differences in the unit operations of the two methods, as well as the chemical and physical properties of the slurry. Parameters are defined for the operation of the solvent-in-pulp process and the design of the continuous ion exchange column. Pilot plant operating experience with both recovery systems is described, and an overall assessment of the relative costs is presented.

A theory is presented for calculating the performance history of complete water-drive systems producing from idealized stratified formations. The general equations are applied to systems where the permeability stratification is either of the exponential or linear type. Calculations were carried through for different degrees of permeability stratification, but with special emphasis on the effect of the mobility ratio between the produced oil and the invading water on the resultant performance. These results are also expressed graphically as curves for the initial water breakthrough recovery, for the different degrees of stratification, as a function of the mobility ratio, and of the composition of the produced fluid stream as a function of the cumulative oil recovery. For several typical cases the latter has also been plotted as a function of the cumulative oil and water throughflow. The general result is that when the mobility of the oil is lower than that of the invading water the channelling tendency resulting from the permeability stratification becomes aggravated as the higher permeability zones become flooded out. Situations of this type would obtain when producing low gravity or highly viscous oils. Conversely, if the mobility of the oil is high compared to that of the invading water, the flooding of the high permeability zones will lead to a retarding and choking effect, and the gross bypassing phenomena will be partially suppressed. These conditions would correspond to those of flooding high gravity or low viscosity oils. A discussion is given of the various basic assumptions made in the analysis, including that of ignoring the stripping phase of the production history as implied by relative permeability concepts. INTRODUCTION The physical ultimate recoveries from oil reservoirs are basically determined and limited by the physical oil displacement processes associated with the reservoir producing mechanism. In practice, however, the economic ultimate recoveries are further limited by the mobility of the reservoir fluids and the uniformity and continuity of the producing formation. In fact, it is the differential depletion between the component parts of the composite reservoir which ultimately determines the total recovery at the time of field abandonment. While this observation applies to both the solution gas drive and gravity drainage mechanisms, in which use is made only of the energy contained within the original oil-bearing reservoir, it is of even more paramount importance under operations wherein the energy associated with extraneous fluids provides the ultimate oil expulsion mechanism. Whether the invading fluid is the water from an edgewater drive, water injected for pressure maintenance, gas injected for pressure maintenance, or gas returned to the formation in a cycling program, it is often the continuity and uniformity of the producing section which will control the economic efficiency of the operations. The importance of the problem of reservoir non-uniformity does not, of course, lessen its complexity or the difficulties of its solution. In fact, these are inherently such that the concept of a "general" solution is virtually meaningless. About all that can be reasonably hoped for is the analysis of specific and well-defined types of non-uniformity which may give some degree of approximation to actual reservoir conditions. Since variations in the nature of the reservoir which depend only on the position along the streamlines will not lead directly to major differential depletion development within the reservoir, the types of non-uniformity considered thus far have involved stratification assumptions. That is, the producing section has been replaced by a multi-layer "sandwich," each uniform areally, and differing from the others only in its basic physical constants as to thickness, porosity and permeability. The fluid motion in the composite system is thus approximated by a parallel superposition of the independent fluid movements in the individual strata. For the specific application to cycling operations the theory of the effect of permeability stratification has been developed for both discontinuous' and continuous types of permeability stratification. Among the latter, treatments have been given of systems in which permeability distributions are governed by exponential, linear' or probability3 functions. In all these studies complete dynamical equivalence was assumed between the injected dry gas and the displaced wet gas. The overall effective permeability of each stratum was therefore considered as constant and independent of the degree of invasion of the injected fluid. In the case of the displacement of oil by water, the assumption of dynamical equivalence between the water and oil will be strictly valid only by accident. Even if the oil viscosity should be the same as that of the water, the effective permeability to the oil in the presence of the connate water will in general be quite different from that of the water behind the water-oil interface flowing past the trapped residual oil. As a result the effective permeability for the stratum as a whole and rate of water invasion will change with time as the intrusion continues. The differential fluid motion in the individual strata will thus also vary with time. Qualitatively, it is easy to predict the resultant effects.
