As far as known to the writer, no discovery has heretofore been made in the United States of deposits of beauxite, or the hydrated oxide of alumina. The deposit which forms the subject of this note was discovered in Floyd County, Georgia. Numerous "float" specimens, covering an area of about half an acre, indicate the location of the main deposit, which has thus far been opened to an inconsiderable extent only. The excavations show the beauxite to exist apparently as large masses in clay. The formation is Lower Silurian, as determined by the Geological Survey of Georgia. The surface in the immediate vicinity is covered with numerous angular fragments of chert, which is a characteristic rock throughout this formation in Georgia. An examination of the mineral shows it to have the oolitic structure common to several beauxites. It. varies in color from a light salmon to dark red, depending upon its contents of iron oxide. THE productive area of asphalt-bearing sandstone in Missouri is near the Missouri-Kansas state line near Nevada, the county seat of Vernon County about 100 miles south of Kansas City. While produc-tion thus far has been confined to Vernon and Barton counties, there are known deposits in adjacent counties. The area is served by four rail-roads: the Missouri Pacific, the Kansas City Southern, the Missouri-Kansas & Texas, and the St. Louis & San Francisco. The plant of the Reliance Rock Asphalt Corporation is in Vernon County, about 5 miles west of Nevada, at Ellis, a flag station on the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railroad. A siding has been built to the plant so that the finished product can be loaded directly into railroad cars. The property consists of a lease of 240 acres in one block. All portions of the property not required for quarrying or processing the asphalt-bearing sandstone are used for farming by the fee owner. The entire tract is very flat so that there are no transportation difficulties from quarry to plant.

JAMES P.. MUNROE.-The present situation is vastly different from the situation at the, time the paper was written. We now know pretty well what our problem with the disabled soldier is: 50,000 disabled men have come back and the Surgeon General tells us that probably 35,000 more are coming over in the months of March and April. So the total number of disabled men will be 85,000, which of course includes a great number of slightly disabled. If we followed the proportion that obtains in other countries, we would have about 10 per cent. of those people to be retrained under the Vocational Law. As a matter of fact, the general intelligence of our men is so much higher and the provision the government has made for the training off these disabled men is so much more liberal than with the other governments that we feel very certain indeed that instead of having 8500, men to be retrained there will probably be twelve and possibly fifteen thousand.

We are advised by Carrington Phelps, Secretary of the professional Classes War Relief of America, having offices at 33 West 42d Street, New York, that this organization is now prepared for active relief of professional men who have enlisted in military service or are assisting the Government in the civil service or in civil life, at the sacrifice of their usual sources of income. The organization has found that the main obstacle to such relief is the hesitancy of this class of persons to make known their needs. Relief cases have to be sought out; the organization has already found some but has asked the cooperation of the Institute to assist in finding as many more as may exist. It is suggested that the Institute can render useful service in this connection, first, by informing our members of this feature of war relief, by being on the alert to report those needing relief, and to make all possible inquiry after such cases. It is further desired that information as to all such cases be forwarded immediately upon their discovery.

At the close of the current academic year, there will be eight vacancies to be filled in research graduate assistantships which are maintained by the Engineering Experiment Station of the University of Illinois. In addition to these assistantships, there are available two research graduate assistantships in gas engineering, which are supported by the Illinois Gas Association. These assistantships, for each, of which there is an annual stipend of $500 and freedom from all fees except the matriculation and diploma fees, are open to graduates of approved American and foreign universities and technical schools who are prepared to undertake graduate study in engineering, physics, or applied chemistry. An appointment to the position of Research Graduate Assistant is made and must be accepted for two consecutive collegiate years, at the expiration of which period, if all requirements have been met, the degree of Master of Science will be conferred. Not more than. half of the time of a Research Graduate Assistant is required in connection with the work of the department to which he is assigned, the remainder being available for graduate study.

Crushed limestone is now being "de-dusted" at the Warner Co. plant in Bellefonte, Pa., by a new high-efficiency classifier utilizing aerodynamic principles not previously employed in classifiers. Crushed limestone for certain glass industry requirements must not have more than 10 pct fines in the overall aggregate, and it is the function of the new-type classifier to separate these fines from the coarse material. During the development of this classifier by the Buell Engineering Co. of New York, it was found to have possible applications for separating pulverized coal, sintered metals, ores, mineral flours, and fillers, among other items. Limestone from Warner's deep mine is initially crushed and particles larger than 3/8-in. mesh are burned in kilns to provide calcium oxide for the chemical industry. The 3/8-in. screenings are dried and crushed to -16 mesh for use by the glass industry. For those applications requiring a minimum of fines, no more than 10 pct -100 mesh material is allowable in the end product. Hence the need for high-efficiency separation.

All mining and milling enterprises must be based on adequate ore reserves. Reserves must be established by physical exploration, and the orebody should be of sufficient size and grade to insure recovery of capital invested in mine purchase, development, and mill construction and to provide a reasonable profit. Determination of these economic factors is so complicated, and present costs of mine development and construction so great, that analysis can be made only by competent persons qualified by experience in this field. What rate for maximum efficiency? Unfortunately, even today mills are built before deposits have been adequately outlined, and there are rusting monuments to such folly in nearly every mining region. Also there is a tendency to be guided by the philosophy that "if a little is good, a lot is better," which leads to the conclusion that mining at a given rate and making so much per ton will yield a profit of so many dollars per day. Consequently, why not build a mill to treat twice as much per day and make twice as much money?

RICHARDS, South Bethlehem, Pa.-I think my affections are still rather with the radiation pyrometer than the optical pyrometer, for practical use, and I wish that Prof. Burgess would use the two together, under the same conditions, using the optical as his standard, if he prefers. Then, assuming the optical emissivity which he feels is correct for the optical pyrometer, he could calculate the thermal emissivity for use with .the radiation pyrometer. If we could thus get reliable values for the thermal emissivity, we could then use the radiation pyrometer, and would avoid the use of the standard lamp, which has to be frequently calibrated for use in the optical pyrometer. It is very advisable to distinguish carefully between the terms optical emissivity and thermal emissivity. There -is considerable confusion caused by the bare statement that molten iron has an emissivity of so much, meaning by that its optical emissivity, for a light wave of a certain length; whereas what we want in the radiation pyrometer is its total ther-

W. H. BLAUVELT (author's reply to discussion *).-The prevention of smoke from byproduct-oven plants is not as simple as would appear from Mr. Moss's statement. All well designed byproduct-oven plants are equipped with ample exhauster capacity, and the suction on the ovens is controlled by highly sensitive pressure governors that control the pressure within a fraction of a millimeter. Of course, this apparatus can get out of order, causing the batteries to smoke, but this does not often happen. As stated by Mr. Thompson, the smoke produced is made almost entirely during the time of charging the ovens, when they are cut off from the hydraulic main. The amount of smoke that escapes at this time is extremely small, compared with -the amount produced by a beehive-oven plant, but the mechanical difficulties in preventing any escape of smoke at charging time are considerable. The probability distribution of fracture data from a rock mechanics test contains information about the effectiveness of the testing procedure and/or about the nature of the operating failure mechanism. The tensile strength of Lac du Bonnet granite forms a bimodal probability distribution when determined through line loading as in the Brazilian test. The same data obtained from three point bends tests are unimodal. The bimodality can in part be removed by distributing the line load over a finite area. Moisture has the anticipated effect in lowering both the average compressive and the average tensile strength of Lac du Bonnet granite. The reduction in strength however is not uniform within the probability distribution; the change is the largest at low and the smallest at high strength. Conversely, long-term loading is more damaging to the high strength members of the distribution. The large scatter of failure times in static fatigue experiments can in part be removed or even utilized when the probability distribution of instantaneous strength is taken into account.

Herbert C. Hoover, who became a member of this Institute in 1896 and who is now one of its Vice-Presidents, is the man who in 1914 extended a helping hand to Americans stranded in Europe at the outbreak of the war, and who made it possible for many such travelers to return safely to their homes. When his countrymen no longer needed his services, he turned to the Belgians, whose need of food had been presented to him. Engineers have been among his assistants from the first, and it is because we believe that members of his own profession will still be particularly interested in his work that we thus mention it in the Bulletin. A Minute adopted by the Board of Directors of the Institute, in which the Belgian Kiddies, Ltd., is recommended to the consideration of the members, immediately follows the Proceedings of the Meeting of the Board of Directors. SOMEONE has called this war a war of gadgets. Someone else says it is an engineers' war. It is a war of production, transportation; a war in the sky; a war on wheels; a civilians' war. Let us not quarrel about nomenclature. Call it what you want. If four motored bombers and thirty-ton tanks are gadgets, then it is a gadget war. Engineers, scientists, shop laborers, air-raid wardens all have their highly important jobs to do. The fact remains that this war, like all others, is a soldiers' war. The basic strategy employed today is the same strategy that Philip of Macedon used on the Plains of Thessaly twenty centuries ago. His phalanx was a striking force armed with every known weapon. It was armored with breastplate and casque. It depended for success on superior man power and mobility, upon superior weapons and supply, and upon superior discipline. It executed commands faster than its enemies; it had more catapults and spears, more men in the back areas bringing up supplies. It was a new idea. It used what today we call the scissors movement to cut up its foes. It took sharp advantage of surprise. It introduced terror as a weapon-terror inspired by a vast, moving, shouting army with banners. It laid waste the cities by fire. The Greeks had a word for it but that word wasn't "blitzkrieg."

IN order to secure cupels uniform in size, density, etc., I have arranged a machine which has proved quite satisfactory, and is so simple and inexpensive as to be within the reach of nearly everyone. It has been in operation here about four years, and with it all cupels used in the assay department of the School of Mines have been made. As shown in the accompanying figure, it consists of a common letter-press, the movable platen of which has been removed. In place of the plate, there is attached to the screw a plunger, which turns with the screw, moving up and down, and making the depression in the cupel. The ring holding the bone-ash is held in place directly underneath the plunger by a wooden guide fastened to the base of the press. There is also fastened to the top of the guide for the ring, at a distance above the base of the press equal to the height of the cupel-ring, a piece of mood about § inch thick, under which the ring will just slide into place, and through which there is cut a circular hole exactly fitting the plunger, guiding it in its downward movement always in the same vertical line; this last guide not only directs the plunger, but also prevents the lifting of the ring by the plunger, upon the raising of the latter.

The best method for the estimation of copper in ores and secondary products is that proposed by Dr. Steinbeck* for the award offered by the Mansfeld'schen Ober-Berg-und Hutten-Direction. It is based upon the decolorization of the blue ammonia solution of copper by potassic cyanide.7 It is necessary for the accurate estimation of copper in arsenides that the arsenic be separated from the copper before the ammonia solution is made. The presence of a notable amount of arsenic renders the titration by potassic cyanide inaccurate, the end reaction being obscured by the appearance of a yellowish-green tint towards the end of the titration. The change of the color of the ammonia solution from blue to the tint caused by the presence of arsenic cannot be used for an end reaction, for the intensity and quick appearance of the latter color depend upon the amount of arsenic present in the solution. In the analysis of speise, the method of separating the copper by an oxidizing and reducing treatment in the muffle, to volatilize the arsenic, gives poor results, and there may easily be some loss of the weighed sample. The separation of the precipitated sulphides of arsenic and copper by treating with sodic sulphide, gives good results, but the process is tedious. I have used the two following methods, which are simpler and more expeditious than those mentioned, with good results

I DESIRE to call the attention of the Institute to an interesting experiment, which may turn out to be an indication of a valuable improvement in the manufacture of steel. As the members are aware, the addition of ordinary spiegeleisen, in the open hearth or Bessemer converter, to a bath of decarbonized iron, has a twofold object,-the recarbonization of the bath to a desired degree, and the remedy of the red shortness otherwise found to be inevitable in the final product. This red shortness is ascribed to the presence of oxide of iron in the molten metal ; and it is supposed that the manganese of the spiegeleisen, uniting with the oxygen of such oxide, carries it into the slag. At the same time there is a small percentage of the manganese usually left in the cast steel, probably to the improvement of its quality. Whatever be the true explanation the effect of the manganese is acknowledged to be not only beneficial, but necessary. But the use of spiegeleisen containing high percentages of carbon limits the quantity that can be introduced, because the carbon must be limited if soft steel is desired. This inconvenience becomes so serious as to prevent the use of ordinary spiegeleisen in the manufacture of steel containing more than, say two-tenths per cent. of phosphorus; since the quality of the steel can be made tolerable only by reducing its contents of carbon in proportion as the

In 1972 a major renovation of the flotation and regrinding circuits was completed at Kennecott Copper Corporation's Chino Mines Division concentrator at Hurley, New Mexico. At that time a new lime distribution and control system was placed in operation. Lime is used to depress pyrite, and flotation at a high pH or alkalinity is required for optimum recovery of principal copper minerals, chalcopyrite and chalcocite with good rejection of the pyrite. Regrinding is also required to liberate chalcocite, much of which occurs as intimately associated chalcocite-pyrite middling grains. Accurate control of the lime addition is necessary to obtain both optimum metallurgy and minimum lime usage. At low pH levels, flotation cell control is difficult due to excess froth, but excessively high pH levels can go unnoticed because froth characteristics do not change from those experienced at the desired pH. With manual control of the lime addition, the desired pH can be exceeded for periods of up to two hours. Test Work Plant test work on a lime control system using conventional pH probes gave disappointing results with high electrode maintenance and poor control characteristics. For example, the rougher flotation cells are operated at a pH between 11.4 and 11.6 and the probes required cleaning at least once a day, and occasionally every shift. These high maintenance requirements were considered unreasonable for a plant-wide system using six or more control loops.

The Industrial Minerals Div., of the AIME meeting scheduled for Nova Scotia Sept. 8-12, 1953, promises to be one of the outstanding gatherings ever attended by the group. Complementing the educational value of technical sessions will be the superb fishing, boating, golfing, and tennis facilities. [ ] Sponsor of the meeting is the Nova Scotia Mining Society. The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and Industrial Minerals Div., AIME have been invited to participate. The land immortalized by Longfellow's poem, Evangeline, still contains much of the forest primeval-enough to make it a wonderful vacation spot for delegates and their families. Its scenic beauty is almost unmatched in the area north of the border. Quoting from the Nova Scotia tour book; "Nova Scotia, once known as Acadia, is 374 miles long, from 600 to 100 miles wide ... Excepting the Isthmus of Chignecto, 17.5 miles wide, the province is entirely surrounded by water, no portion being more than 50 miles from the sea . . . has 4625 miles of coastline, guarded by 356 lighthouses and fog alarms. The province is renowned for its picturesque coastline, its harbors dotted with islands, its deep valleys and multitude of beautiful lakes." A progress report on the plans for the meeting will be made monthly. Thus far, technical sessions will be held at Keltic Lodge, Ingonish, N. S. The lodge will also be the starting point for many of the field trips and social events which are in various stages of planning and development.

Regarding the technical paper by Thomas E. Finch and Edward L. Fidler, "Recovery of Stray (Thin) Seams in Western Coal Mining." I would like to comment on this subject. In western Canada, most strip mines encounter thin seam coal or rider seams. Although the paper addresses the problems and costs associated with the recovery of this coal, it does not take into account what the savings are. Without looking at the savings, the "Total Objective" is of course not clear. I feel that in a stripping operation the mine can spend per ton (of the thin seam) up to their dragline stripping costs per ton to recover a rider seam or thin seam. The reasoning behind this is simply that this is the price the mine will have to pay to expose an equivalent amount of coal without the recovery of these thin seams. If the mine can recover a rider seam or thin seam for less than the dragline operating costs per ton, a savings will be realized. By recovering a thin seam or rider seam, the life of an ore body is extended by that amount of coal not thrown away. In addition, the cost of land acquisition, associated permits, capital, and reclamation will be reduced as more coal is delivered for a given area. When the above points are considered, the recovery of these thin seams can be very profitable and indeed worth recovering.

ARSENIC and antimony are always grouped together by chemists, since they are both members of group V of the periodic table of elements and exhibit a general similarity in the formation of compounds. Metallurgists generally think of them as less closely related because they do not have similar uses. In metallurgical operations, especially lead and copper smelting, arsenic tends to go off as a vapor phase and collect as fume in the flues, while antimony tends to remain with the bullion. Broadly speaking, the frequency of occurrence, practical utility and the effects on associated metals of arsenic and antimony are such that the metallurgist is inclined to think of arsenic as a troublesome impurity in ores, but of antimony as a valuable constituent that is recovered either as a byproduct or through the metallurgical treatment of antimony ores. Estimating the world production of arsenic as about 40,000 tons annually, probably not more than about 200 tons yearly is produced and used in metallic form, whereas one half of the approximately 40,000 tons of antimony produced annually is metallic.
