To an association like the one before which I read this paper, few questions can be more important and constantly recurring than the following, viz.: "What economy can be effected in the manufacture of American iron ?" And it is the one with which I purpose to deal in this paper; premising, however, that my object is merely to indicate the direction in which an answer should be sought for, rather than to give it myself. This subject may be divided into two parts; " Economy in the production of pig-iron," and " Economy in the manufacture of wrought-iron;" but it is to the former alone that I shall confine myself this evening.

To those working in the mineral industry, the flowsheet is a familiar and valuable tool, seldom used, unfortunately, to its fullest advantage. As with so many other commonplace and simple items, there is little or no attempt to expand on the forms, and types of flowsheets. A flowsheet or flow diagram may be defined as an illustration showing circulation of the ore stream in a concentrating plant. It may be further described as an explanatory graphic design or picture. A flowsheet is obtained by interpreting the metallurgists' research and ore test data, usually with some adjustments to suit the economies of the project. It brings together, in compact form, information from a number of sources.

T Tahawus, N. Y., National Lead Co. operates the MacIntyre development. Here the world's largest titanium mine produces 5200 long tons of ore per day and pours 8000 long tons of waste rock over its dumps. Concentrated ilmenite is sent by rail to National Lead Co. pigment plants, and a second product, magnetite, is sold to steel producers in raw form or is agglomerated and shipped as sinter. Several earlier attempts had been made to produce iron from the deposits, which have been known since 1826. These attempts failed, chiefly because of titanium impurity. In 1941 the present owners re-established the operation for production of war-scarce ilmenite, and the impurity became the main product.

Current scale-up procedures are discussed critically, including: constant specific energy criterion; determination of mill size and power for a given ore, throughput and mesh of grind; specification of operating speed and loading. A major dynamic and kinetic factor now recognized is that the ratio of media rotational flow to ore axial flow, and the number of mill revolutions that ore is subjected to during residence, both diminish as mill diameter increases. These factors can lead to capacity limitations when mill diameters reach a critical range, especially regarding coarse sizes. Experience at the Bougainville and Pinto Valley operations is contrasted. Corrective measures suggested are to reduce loading and increase speed towards the Davis best operating speed.

From time to time since the initial installation of an experimental flotation section in 1940, Permanente Cement Co. has made efforts to beneficiate the low-grade limestone fraction which occurs in its deposits at Permanente, Calif. The encouraging results outlined in this article are the result of Permanente's latest effort. THE PERMANENTE LIMESTONE AND THE REASON FOR ITS BENEFICIATION The Permanente deposit is a sheet of Calera limestone over 700 ft thick lying within the Franciscan sediments of the San Francisco peninsula. Limestone suitable for cement manufacture underlies, overlies, and is interbedded with low-grade limestone and chert. Andesite intrusions are found as a secondary gangue. IN times of a falling metal market the mine operator attempts to remain in competition by lowering his overall cost and raising the grade of ore he processes. But these adjustments can be made only within narrow limits imposed by inherent characteristics of the operation. Is there some additional method whereby the break-even point can be lowered? One approach, perhaps the only one, to lower a break-even point is careful cost analysis considering both fixed and variable costs in relation to mining rate. The following is an analysis of cost distribution and its significance in determining the most economic combination of the factors of ore grade and tonnage output applicable to a given mining operation.

The instantaneous shut in pressure often times is not a well defined feature of pressure-time records from in situ stress determinations by hydraulic fracturing. As the applications of in situ stress data become more sophisticated, the grea5er the need for an unambiguous method with which to identify the instantaneous shut in pressure becomes. Controlled experiments suggest that the instantaneous shut in pressure should be equated with the pressure at the inflection point of the pressure-time record following shut in. A method for determining this value is presented. Often times the minimum instantaneous shut in pressure determined after several pressurization cycles is the best estimate of the stress acting perpendicular to the fracture plane.

The well-known formulae of screening efficiency and circulating load calculations in closed crushing circuits were exploited to achieve graphical estimation of these parameters. Three basic charts were proposed and constructed. The first one is for the regular closed circuits where the new feed goes to the crusher. The second is for the reverse closed circuits in which the new feed reported to the screen is free of screen undersize particles. The third chart controls the reverse circuits when they are receiving new incoming feeds containing undersize material. Compound circuits were also reanalyzed and a concept of equivalent simple circuit was introduced to enable graphical manipulation of these complex circuits with the help of the aforementioned charts

North Carolina is the leading state in the US in lithium mineral production. Spodumene is mined in open pits and concentrated by flotation by the two companies, Lithium Corp. of America and Foote Mineral Co. North Carolina State University has a mineral research laboratoy in Asheville, N. C., with trained personnel, batch and pilot plant facilities to assist in the state's mineral development. The NCSU Minerals Research Laboratory assisted both lithium-producing companies with spodumene concentration problems and has lately worked closely with Lithium Corp. of America to develop the best flowsheet for spodumene and byproduct recovery. The concentration of North Carolina spodumene and byproducts from pegmatites is presented and illustrated with figures.

THE Southeast Missouri division of the St. Joseph Lead Co. normally hauls and hoists over 5 million tons of lead ore each year. This ore is mined in the stopes and headings of 20 mines, hauled to a main line system, see above, and transported up to 6.4 miles to ore-hoisting shafts. Average haulage distance is 2.16 miles. A few years ago a distinguished mining engineer visiting this area for the first time remarked, "You do not have a mining problem; yours is a haulage problem."
