FOUR factors that largely determine the end product obtained when cement and water are mixed are the chemical composi-tion of the cement, the fineness to which the cement is ground, the amount of mixing water used, and the procedure used in mixing the slurry. In order to study the effect of two of these factors, the other two, the chemical composition and method of mixing, are kept constant, leaving as variables fineness and water-cement ratio. Through years of experimentation and usage it has been well established that the reduction of cement clinker to a very fine state by grinding improves its cementing value, principally because the reaction between cement and water takes place only at the surface of the cement particle, further action being hindered by the accumulation of reaction products that tend to coat the unreacted material. Minor industrial minerals included in this chapter are: the alum minerals, bromine, calcium chloride, epsomite and other natural magnesium salts, iodine, meerschaum, quartz, industrial crystals other than quartz, and nonfuel gases (air, helium, carbon dioxide). Alum Minerals The natural alums comprise a group of hydrated double sulfates, the most important of which are potash alum, KAI(S04)2.12H20, the "alum" of popular usage; ammonium alum, (NH4)AI(SO4)2, known mineralogically as tschermigite; and soda alum, NaAI(SO4)2.12H20. Kalinite, KAI(SO4)2.11H20, and mendozite, NaAl(SO4)2, 11H20, are fibrous monoclinic alums, distinct from the isometric species potash alum and soda alum.4 Alunite, KAI3(S04)2(OH)6, also known as alumstone or alum rock, has been used as a raw material in the manufacture of alum since early times. All the natural alums are highly soluble and occur as surface evaporation products in arid regions or in sheltered places. Potash alum, together with the other natural alums, commonly occurs as an efflorescence or crevice filling in argillaceous rocks and brown coals that contain disseminated pyrite or marcasite. The mineral is derived by the action of sulfuric acid, formed during the weathering of the sulfide, upon alkali-rich aluminum silicates. Ammonia alum is found chiefly in lignite or broad-coal beds and bituminous shales. Alunite is most commonly associated with acid volcanic rocks, where the rock has been largely altered and alunite formed owing to the presence of sulfuric acid solutions or vapors. Aluminum sulfate, which for most uses is the essential ingredient of alum, may be found in saline residues resulting from the evaporation of natural water and may be formed by the action of acid waters upon aluminous rocks. A deposit of natural potash alum occurs in an irregular network of veins associated with sulfur in rhyolite in Esmeralda County, Nevada, about 35 miles west of Tonopah and 10 miles north of Silver Peak. Alum was recovered at a plant operated on the property between 1920 and 1923 by crushing the ore to ¾ in., grinding to minus 80-mesh, and counter-current leaching; the resulting alum solution was then filtered and crystallized. Alunite was of much interest during World War I as a source of potash and during World War II as a source of alumina. The wellknown deposits at Tolfa, Italy, are veins in trachyte and have been the basis of alum manufacture there since the middle of the fifteenth century. Pure alunite is insoluble in water and in common acids, but if it is heated to 500°C it loses its water of hydration, and the residue consists largely of anhydrous potash alum, part of which is readily soluble in water or acids. If the heat is increased beyond 500°C, most of the sulfur combined with the alumina is released as oxides and the residue consists of potassium sulfate and alumina. Thus, either potash alum (and aluminum sulfate) or potassium sulfate and alumina may be made. In the

INTRODUCTION IN the last few years, much study has been devoted to increasing stoping efficiency. The reasons for this are shortage of manpower, shorter working hours, operating regulations, and shortages of essential materials. More efficiency in mining methods is needed to offset these adverse factors. In the past, attention has been centered upon haulage, hoisting equipment, mill flowsheets, etc., but recently the spotlight has been focused on the cost of stoping and the cost of handling materials. Scrapers and scraper hoists have thus assumed greater importance. In order to make it possible for certain ore bodies to be mined at a profit, it has been necessary to apply assembly-line practices to the streamlining of mining methods. All cycles of the mining operation must balance, and the sooner broken ore is removed from the working face, the sooner another round can be started. Since the introduction of scraper hoists in metal mines more than thirty years ago, much progress has been made in their design and application. Alert operators are now constantly watching for methods in which to apply scrapers. The saving of manpower in development work and the changing of mining methods that once employed manual handling of materials are increasing vital wartime tonnages. Essential ores from newly discovered ore bodies are moving rapidly from stopes to reduction plants-because it is now possible to develop an ore body and place it in production with a minimum of manpower and development work. Today, speed is one of the prime essentials of mining. Everywhere, there is a concentrated effort to use experienced miners in breaking rock, in timbering, and in carrying out the various phases of mining that require many months of training. Much effort is being made to mechanize the working places because experienced men naturally prefer to work where the majority of materials are handled mechanically. In line with this policy, many new men are being taught the details of scraper work, because even green men can quickly become acquainted with scrapers and thereby release older heads to perform the more skilled phases of mining. In some places it has been found economical to change from one system of stoping to another that more readily allows the application of mechanical muck-handling equipment. Where blocks are worked faster, the cost of materials, time, and labor is cut drastically. This favorable situation allows more manpower to remain on straight breaking and timbering-or straight production mining. More-over, when blocks are mined faster, more floors can often be mined vertically before the mucking or wheel floor is moved. This results in several direct savings. There are cases where it has been proved that by working a given block faster more area, longitudinally or vertically, could be mined at one time, thus permitting the reduction of development cost. AN observation that is finding fresh confirmation in the leadership of the Allied Nations is "When the need arises, a man will rise to fill it." Much the same can be said of industrial advances in the current emergency. Events and circumstances have created needs for new materials and stimulated the inventive genius of man to fill them. The timely development of fibrous-glass manufacture, in relation to present war needs, is a case in point. HISTORICAL SUMMARY It is probable that the first glass fibers produced by the hand of man were made about 4000 years ago. Successful production of glass fibers for manifold industrial and military uses, on any scale that could begin to meet present needs, has a history spanning a scant four years. The American processes that brought this young industry into being were developed between the years 1931 and 1937; research and manufacturing efforts were consolidated to create a commercially satisfactory operation as late as November 1939. In the 40 months that have elapsed since then, the industry has achieved commercial importance, supplied immense quantities of materials for pre-war industrial expansion to meet "defense" and Lend-Lease needs, and now has reached such importance that it has come largely under the control of the War Production Board for equitable distribution of its major products among 13 claimant agencies. It is worthy of note, however, that the Bureau of Ships, Navy Department, began exploratory use of fibrous-glass products in 1932, within one year after the date of the first experimental trials of the new process. This early recognition of the military importance of fibrous glass gave impetus to further research work. The foregoing rapid scanning of historical development must be filled in, lest the impression be created that glass fibers were suddenly created out of thin air, with no antecedent trials, failures, and partial successes. The actual history of glassmaking is lost in antiquity. Probably some nomadic tribesman found molten glass beneath the bed of a hot campfire built upon sand of the proper composition. If his curiosity led him to poke the glowing, viscous pool with a green-wood stick or some handy weapon, it is probable that he drew a glass fiber on the end of his implement. Molten glass has much the same consistency as honey or molasses; it strings out tenuously. Thus, it is quite possible that the first form of glass shaped by man's action was a glass fiber. Artisans in glass, throughout the long history of glassmaking as an art, drew fibers from fine rods for many decorative applications, including "spun glass" decoration in beautiful stemware and the charming millefiori (glass flowers encased in solid glass), and even to create the blood vessels in glass eyes to match a bleary mate.

WEIGEL 20] Introduction-Grouting in Mines By definition the word "grout" means a thin mortar, or a kind of plaster or cement, and "grouting" means to fill up or finish with grout. The words "cement," "plaster" and "mortar" mean a substance that is used in a soft state which subsequently hardens. Thus, grouting is the filling of void space with a substance that hardens. Construction cements are the most common substances used, either by themselves or in mixtures, but the term grouting is applied quite correctly when other substances such as plastics and certain chemicals are used. Also, the use of the term grouting to cover the filling of voids with materials that do not actually become hard, such as the flotation tailings used in grouting in the southeast Missouri lead district, should be considered correct, as some stiffening does take place and, anyway, it is a better descriptive term than any substitute. Engineers are interested in grouting because some of the materials with which they must work contain voids, and certain conditions can be improved if these voids can be filled with something solid and permanent. Grouting is done to accomplish several purposes: I. To stop the passage of fluids and gases, 2. To cement materials together to make them stronger, and 3. To prevent consolidation of materials by filling void space with something solid as a replacement for the air and water that could be forced out under load. The construction industry uses grouting extensively for all three purposes. Grouting is used to stop water percolation under and around dams. It is used to control water flow in tunnel driving and in shaft sinking. It is used to improve foundation conditions under civil engineering structures by permanently filling void space and thereby reducing settlement, or by cementing broken rock together and increasing its supporting strength. The oil and gas industry does a lot of grouting, primarily to stop the passage of gases and fluids. The search for oil at increasingly greater depths has meant greater investment per well, and the oil industry has spent large sums on development of improved drilling methods. This

RECENTLY one of the Welsh coal companies, which has an excellent plant of up-to-date ma-chinery both on the surface and underground, operated under modern methods, sent one of its engi-neers to the United States to study actual operations in the mines. He visited several of the most important and best conducted collieries, went back, and reported that the greatest difference between operations in England and in the United States was. the closer con-tact between management and workmen. By manage-ment he meant management all the way through; close cooperation between office management, superintend-ents, foremen, shift-bosses, etc., and the workmen. A visit to some of the coal mines in that country by the writer made this fact rather impressive. The feel-ing on this side of the water that the methods in use in the coal mines in England are not up-to-date was found in many cases to be quite erroneous. Many mines, particularly those with very thin beds, in which profitable operations are doubtful under the best con-ditions, have necessarily had to adhere to old methods instead of making mechanical improvements. The Powell-Duffryn mines, in the center of the South Wales district, are certainly operating successfully, and have planned their business excellently. Sufficient areas of contiguous land have been leased for extended opera-tions. Mine plants are laid out in the valley, for work-ings on both sides, on a reasonable tonnage of 1500 to 3000 tons to each operation. The beds are from 30 to 48 in. thickness, and a 3-ft. seam is considered an ex-cellent thickness of coal; in fact, the miners prefer to work on the thinner beds rather than the thick ones, where they consider it more difficult to control the backs. This company is making use of its fine coal for produc-ing electric power, which is distributed to its own operations, and for use in the communities adjoining. For this purpose methods of cleaning the fine coal are being put into use. Compressed air is generated at the central power plant and is transmitted over long dis-tances to various mines in each valley. A byproduct coke plant uses more of the fine coal and gives further returns from non-commercial coal. The long-wall system applied in sections of limited size is popular in working the small seams, and me-chanical cutting is used, also handling either by shaking chutes or belt conveyors, or a combination of both. In some mines mechanical cutting is not necessary. The backs are so handled that in the softer or somewhat crushed seams hand cutting can be carried on effec-tively.

COPPER In terms of mining activity, copper is the leading nonferrous metal. It is true that in recent years the volume of aluminum consumption in the non-Communist world has exceeded the volume of copper consumption, but virtually the entire primary aluminum supply is derived from bauxite. On the average, only four tons of bauxite need be mined to produce a ton of aluminum. By contrast, the highest-grade, large-scale copper mines now in operation (those in the Congo) must mine at least 20 tons of ore to produce a ton of copper. In the United States an average of 150 tons of ore must be mined to produce a ton of copper. This does not take into account the huge amounts of waste overburden that must be stripped from the open-pit mines to account for their steadily rising share of the world's copper output. Copper epitomizes the economic problems of the mining industry in many ways. Its price is highly volatile, considering its great economic importance. It has been a tool of mankind longer than any other of the base metals-the dawn of history has been classified as "The Bronze Age." World Copper Production Although copper is mined in many countries, in recent years 70% of the non-Communist world production has come from six countries. Two of these are industrialized countries and are large consumers-United States and Canada. The other four are developing countries with very small domestic requirements-Chile, Zambia, Zaire, and Peru. Heavily dependent on copper exports to sustain their domestic economies, these countries find themselves oscillating between prosperity and depression with the changing levels of copper prices. In an effort to control their own destiny, in 1968 they formed an organization of copper exporting countries (CIPEC) which was designed to study copper markets and possibly to intervene actively in these markets. (When this chapter was being prepared, no actual steps along such lines had been taken.) Many of the leading industrialized nations are wholly dependent on imports for their primary copper supplies. These include West Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and many others. Japan, now the non-Communist world's second largest copper consumer, produces only 10 to 15% of its requirements from domestic mines. Although the bulk of the copper output is smelted in the country where it is mined, there is a limited international trade in copper concentrates. Canada, the Philippines, Australia, and Papua-New Guinea are significant exporters of copper concentrates; Japan, Germany, the United States, and Sweden are importers. However, this trade accounted for only about 10% of the non-Communist world production of copper during the decade of the 1960s.

The Library is a cooperative activity of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. It is administered as a public reference library of engineering and the allied sciences. It contains 133,000 volumes and pamphlets, 6700 maps and receives currently most of the important periodicals in its field. In order to place the resources of the Library at the disposal of those unable to visit it in person, the Library is prepared to furnish lists of references to engineering subjects, copies or translations of articles, and similar assistance. These are exciting times for the coal mining community. Although the industry is in the middle of a healthy boom, there are strong forces tending to counteract or at least temper the rate of growth. There are many pushing and pulling factors of interest to mining people, and a few salient ones will be mentioned here. Primarily because of a tremendous demand for energy, a demand that can't be met by other fuels, the coal industry is in boomsville. Another contributing factor to this situation is the increased overseas demand for metallurgical coal. These demands are being counteracted by a lack of people, the lead-time required to develop new capacity and wildcat strikes, among other things.

Published tables of jaw crusher capacities are compiled for the most part from field performance data, interspersed with interpolations, extrapolations, various safety factors, and other modifications. Such a table attempts to balance and equalize field data from widely Werent materials, with differences of crushability, efficiency of feeding, sizing of the feed, and so on. The tests described in this paper were undertaken with the objectives of checking previously reported capacities; of studying the effects of various factors upon the capacity, including jaw plate curvature; and, if possible, of deriving a general capacity equation. Such an equation has been derived from the data obtained in these tests. It is given together with factors for its use. While more accuracy than is usually required may be obtained by careful application of the equation, it is of simple form and provides a convenient reference plane upon which the potential capacity of various crushers may be compared, and with which operating adjustments may be made on existing installations. The principal deviation in these tests from the usual approach consists of a laboratory technique which has been developed for the production of selected capacity data. Recording instruments are connected to crushers in such a manner that a continuous record is produced which discloses the inherent maximum capacity of the crusher and shows capacity decreases caused by hangups. The capacity effects of various crushing conditions are made more evident by this arrangement. The recording instruments were first applied to a standard sized 10 by 7 in. Blake-type jaw crusher in the laboratory. Suficient tests were run on this with various combinations of setting, throw, speed, feed sizing, shapes of jaw plates, and other operating features, to establish the individual effect of each on the capacity. The instruments later were applied to much larger crushers in the field, through the excellent cooperation of the managements in the Mesabi Iron Range, and data were obtained which closely corroborated the established trends. The capacity equation resulting from the test work is made up of a series of factors, each representing the contributing effects of setting, speed, width of chamber, nip angle, feed density, type of jaw plates, stroke, and the overall operating technique. Fortunately, most of these factors were revealed to be in direct proportion to the capacity for straight plate chambers. This equation is also applicable to chambers using curved plates, with slight modifications resulting from the capacity limitation of the upper portion of the crushing chamber. The equation has been derived from tests covering a very wide range of feed density and hardness. It has been found valid, providing that the feed material is either nonpacking in character, as is usual, or allowance in designing the crushing chamber shape has been made to accommodate this characteristic. Preliminary investigation has shown that the equation is also applicable to single-toggle jaw crushers. Conditions of this are that the top of the flywheel rotate towards the top of the crusher opening, and that the horizontal motion of the swing jaw relative to the stationary jaw at the discharge opening be considered as the stroke. The choice of a nonferrous metal or alloy for a given Application is frequently predicated upon a consideration of properties other than merely the capacity to withstand stress. When ability to withstand stress is the dominant engineering requisite of the material to be used, economic considerations seldom lead to the choice of nonferrous metals and alloys. In most instances where a nonferrous metal is used it is because of some special quality of either corrosion resistance, electrical properties, thermal properties, antifriction, or fabrication advantage that commends its application. The mechanical properties, as a rule, present an incidental engineering consideration entirely secondary to the special quality deciding its use. Indeed, great ingenuity has often been exhibited by engineers and metallurgists in overcoming the mechanical shortcomings of a nonferrous base material. in order to take advantage of some outstanding property. . With this thought in mind, we might better appreciate some of the problems in stress design. encountered with nonferrous metals and alloys pertinent to a symposium on their creep characteristics. Our considerations must necessarily be far from complete because of the broad range of materials in the nonferrous category for which creep properties assume a technical interest. Creep deformation of these metals can be subject for study at temperatures ranging from ambient to incandescent, depending upon which one is under consideration. Whereas the steel metallurgist thinks of creep as an essentially high-temperature engineering consideration, the same is not necessarily true in the field at hand. The diversity of the creep problems in the nonferrous field is perhaps accountable to some extent for its virginity as a symposium subject. Each research has necessarily been sponsored by some organization or group interested either in promoting the use of a certain nonferrous base or in obtaining data toward the solution of a mechanical difficulty encountered in applying a material indispensable for its special attributes. Perhaps as many techniques of creep testing have been used as there are base metals implied under "nonferrous." Some of the creep problems that have occasioned researches are associated with steam-pressure vessels such as tubes, drums, castings, and forgings of copper-base and nickel-base alloys, cable sheathings of lead and lead-base alloys, electrical transmission lines of copper and aluminum, engine parts die-cast from alloys based on zinc, aluminum, copper— soldered and brazed joints-—as well as numerous duties at extremely high temperatures met with alloys based on cobalt, nickel, tungsten, molybdenum, platinum, and other precious or semiprecious metals. Postwar technology will have the benefit of much creep research on nonferrous metals, which for reasons of security cannot be discussed on this occasion. Granules are used primarily as roofing material. From the earliest times, man has been faced with the basic problem of providing protection for himself, his family, and his property against the ravages of the weather. Basically, this problem is no different today than in the past, except that today the trend is to demand shelter which is also colorful and distinctive. There has been a gradual evolution from the thatched roof to the modem ranchstyle home. In his search for a more permanent and more attractive roof, the home owner has utilized many mineral materials. All granules, whether slate or colored granules, are referred to by the asphalt roofing industry as "Slate Granules." Early Roofing Materials The development of mineral roofing in the United States followed two trends: first, the slate industry, and second, the bituminous products. The early colonists were familiar with slab slate construction from Europe and it was natural for them to continue with this type of roofing. As early as 1780, the forerunners of the present bituminous products were finding favor. Those early products consisted of saturating burlap or similar material with crude tar or pitch. This type of roofing was soon improved by dusting a variety of materials on the surface of the roofing to prevent adhesion while in rolls. Such factors as fire resistance and protection from the actinic rays of the sun soon followed. This started the general pattern which is still followed today, that is, saturating felt materials and supplying a uniform grade of crushed mineral to the surface. In commercial and public buildings, metal roofs found early favor. The attractive green color of verdigris-coated copper became a symbol of churches and institutions of learning. Aluminum roofing has become economical for large structures and is finding limited popularity in rural areas. Tile, asbestos, and cement materials, being weather resistant, found early acclaim and are still popular. Today, by far the most widely used roofing materials in the United States are asphalt products. Two important characteristics-economy and weatherability-account for their popularity. Influence of Building Trends on Roofing The postwar building boom in 1947 had many attractive features for the American people. The ranch-style one story type of home seemed well suited for suburban developments which sprang up in such profusion. As the roof in modern home construction is one of the most conspicuous aspects of its architecture, the home owner could now express his tastes not only in paint and landscaping, but could also select an attractive and harmonious roof color. Variety of Minerals Used Many naturally occurring minerals are used today in the roofing industry.
