In many of the old placer-mining districts are still to be found large tracts of gold-bearing gravel not suitable to be worked with a dredge, because the bed is too shallow or the gulch too narrow. Frequently there is not enough grade to handle the gravel successfully by ground-sluicing or a bedrock flume, or it contains too many boulders to be worked succeeefully with the ordinary hydraulic pipe or tube elevator. In southwestern Oregon, two practical placer-miners named Ruble, after working for years trying to make money out of placer-ground coutaining many large boulders, invented and patented a hydraulic elevator of an entirely new type, and one that has been found to work very successfully in flat ground and in gravel containing many large boulders. It is a very simple contrivance. A few years ago I acquired the property near Pierce City, Idaho, known as the American placer-mine. Various attempts had been made to work this ground. THE term "clay" is applied usually to certain earthy rocks whose most prominent property is that of plasticity when wet. This permits them to be molded into almost any shape, which they retain when dry. Furthermore, they harden under fire. Clays contain hydrous aluminum silicates-the clay minerals-in appreciable amounts, but aside from this a number of other mineral grains, particularly quartz, may be present. Texturally clays are fine grained, and the so-called true clay particles are usually under 2µ in diameter. In the last few years, there have been developed at the plant of the Nichols Copper Co., Laurel Hill, 'Borough of Queens, New York City, improvements in electrolytic copper refining by the series system that have materially increased the flexibility and economy of that system. The purpose of this paper is to discuss, as of interest to refiners and to those who have copper to refine, as well as to the engineering profession in general, the changes' that have taken place resulting in wider application and increased efficiency of the series system. Copper is electrolytically refined in two ways, which are spoken of as the "multiple system" and the "series system." In both systems, the electrolytic tanks are in series electrically. Production control of aluminum content of low carbon aluminum killed open hearth steels is being achieved by using an oxygen probe unit. Based on the free oxygen content of the bath after block, a preliminary chart for aluminum additions has been established. The aluminum aim is .040%. Controlled aluminum contents will result in eliminating coarse grain heats, high aluminum contents, and a reduction in aluminum costs. By reducing the frequency of high aluminum contents both cleaner and better rolling heats will be obtained. The savings in aluminum costs is an added benefit of lesser importance in comparison to the quality improvements gained by controlled aluminum contents. Although the main goal for the oxygen probe at Republic Steel has been to adapt it for production control of aluminum contents, future usage could be extensive. Immediate plans for using the probe are on degassed material, on fully blocked open hearth heats to improve manganese recoveries and ranges, and on machining grades to control oxygen content. Also by controlling the oxygen content of the steel to as close to equilibrium conditions as possible, cleaner steel will result.

STATIC soil investigations with more or less heavy loads and extensive borings do not always have efficient results; also, they are very expensive. The new geophysical method of dynamic tests described herein is simple and cheap and avoids several disadvantages of the routine investigation, thus forming a useful supplement to the older methods and even at times replacing various static tests. The fundamental principle of dynamic soil tests consists in the appli-cation of artificial vibration. The technique employed is essentially geophysical in nature and in some respects is akin to seismic studies. Artificial vibration may be excited by centrifugal forces resulting from eccentrically supported rotating masses. The reactions of soil and structures caused by these vibrations may be measured. Their dynamic constants, such as amplitudes, phase speeds, damping, reflection, and interference effects, can be investigated. This geophysical method has been used for several years with increasing success. The results of these tests, summarized at the end of the paper, indicate that this method opens a new field for the practical engineer in investigating soils (capacity and formation), foundations, dams and structures, and especially buildings that must withstand earthquakes.

Pulses from large underground explosions which traverse the rock beyond the "fracture" and "plastic" zones do not behave as a spherical elastic model. Observed attenuation is greater than that predicted by the elastic wave equation, and the pulse form changes in a different manner, i.e., it usually lengthens with the first power of the distance. To more clearly define a mathematical real earth-wave model, detailed analyses of the spherical elastic and the Voigt viscoelastic models have been made, and results compared with observed wave forms from large confined chemical and nuclear explosions. TRANSIENT SPHERICAL ELASTIC WAVES Scope of Investigation Transient elastic spherical waves were investigated in detail. However, an elastic model is not, in general, an exact representation of wave propagation in rock. An understanding of transient elastic waves is desirable for gaining insight into explosive-generated wave phenomena because it can be employed for comparison of more complex and realistic models, such as the Voigt model, or others which may simulate real earth waves. The study was concentrated primarily on the peak values of the radial wave parameters : displacement, particle velocity, acceleration, stress, and strain.

In "Sorting Before Sizing " (a paper first announced at the Pittsburgh meeting, February, 1896, but delayed in preparation and now presented at the present meeting) it is shown that if slime-tables are to do their best work on slimes below 0.5 mm. or 0.05 inch in diameter, they must be carefully sorted or classified, and fed to a series of tables suitably adjusted to the different slime-sorts. The reason is that the coarser and finer slime-sorts require respectively different adjustments of the tables. Hence, if the two are fed together upon a table which has, as nearly as may be, average adjustments, fine galena, for example, will go into the tails, or coarse quartz into the heads, or both—losses which could have been largely prevented if the slime had been carefully sorted and each sort sent to its own slime-tables. As indicated in the paper just mentioned, the present tendency in this country is generally to do away with slime-sorting or "classification," and simply to take the overflow from the hydraulic classifier and divide it among the tables by means of

INTRODUCTION The demand for aluminum metal and thus for alumina and bauxite (the primary sources), is expected to increase at an annual rate of about 6% through the year 1980. It appears that about 90% of the future aluminum metal requirements could be produced at domestic plants but the production would remain dependent on the use of imported bauxite and alumina. The U.S. dependence on foreign bauxite and alumina is of considerable economic and strategic concern because availability and prices are very sensitive to changes in the political climate in the exporting countries. Dependence of the United States on foreign sources of bauxite closely parallels its dependence on foreign sources of oil, particularly since ten countries, including most of the world's major bauxite exporting countries, recently have formed the Inter- national Bauxite Association (IBA) for the specific purpose of increasing revenue for the participating countries. Although it is clear that long-term aluminum requirements cannot be fulfilled by domestic resources of bauxite,; the U.S. has an almost unlimited supply of aluminous resources such as Kaolinite (38% Al203), Alunite (37% Al203), Dawsonite (35% A1203), and Anorthosite (29% A1203)

MINING and Metallurgy closed the year 1928 showing a small profit, the receipts, exclusive of the charge against members, dues for subscriptions, having been $43,067.81, and expenditures $40,925.58. In accord with the policy of the Board the budget is made each year with the purpose of balancing the accounts rather than the maximum of profit from the undertaking since it is the service the journal performs for members that justifies its existence. This service is being constantly increased. Within the year a number of changes have been made in the dress of the magazine, a new cover adopted, color more frequently used, and illustrations more generally employed. These changes seem to have been appreciated both by readers and advertisers. More space has been devoted to papers read before local sections and to the news of their activities. It is believed that this has helped materially in sustaining and increasing the interest in such meetings. The general, regional, and division meetings have also been fully reported and news of Board meetings, of the work of the various committees, of the employment service and other activities of the Institute has been spread before its members month by month. The 570 pages of reading matter printed in the course of the year constitute not only a record of what the Institute was doing but of what the most representative sections possible of the members of the mining and metallurgical professions were thinking. With 9000 members scattered around the world, occupying key positions in the industry, the Institute affords through its own journal an unsurpassed medium for broad contact and enables the readers with the minimum of expenditure of time and at no extra money expense to keep a general contact with the whole range of subjects touched by miners and metallurgists. In these days of intense specialization but rapid change such contact is particularly valuable. The more formal papers presented to the Institute are published in the Transactions, Technical Publications and the special volumes. Mining and Metallurgy carries abstracts of all papers published ,by the Institute and prints in full the shorter, less detailed papers and those which reflect work in progress rather than finished. Such papers have a news value which is supplemented by editorial comment, discussion by members and others, and the actual news of the organization itself. Without therefore attempting to fill the place of a general news sheet, it has a timeliness that gives it an immediate value much appreciated by the readers. In accord with the general policy of the Board every effort will be made constantly to improve the quality of the magazine to the full extent that its revenue will permit. AFter a year's continued impact of war, the task of the petroleum-refining industry stands out clearly and looms up in larger aspect. This time it is not, as it was so largely in the first World War, simply a matter of increased quantity—more and more of the same petroleum products that had substantially been standard for years. In this era the emphasis is largely on newer and improved materials which had been produced, if at all, in comparatively insignificant quantities, and for which manufacturing equipment was not available on a large scale. At the beginning of 1942 four great product needs (besides a number of lesser ones) confronted the industry: 100-octane aviation gasoline, toluene for T.N.T. production, high-quality lubricating oils for aviation and Army equipment service, and petroleum chemicals for synthetic rubber manufacture. The difficulty in presenting a review of engineering progress in petroleum refining during 1942 is that there is so little one is free to say about so much which has been and is being accomplished. At the opening of 1942 the program was to increase the then existing capacity of 50,000 bbl. a day of aviation gasoline to over 150,000 bbl. daily by building new plants at an estimated installation cost of $150,000,000. Later in the year. after the announcement by President Roosevelt of a large increase in the program for war-plane building, additional contracts were made between the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and rehers to raise the capacity to 250,000 bbl. per day. The greatly increased scope of the war activities in all parts of the world, the obligation of the United States as the arsenal of the United Nations, and the greater importance and use of bomber, transport, and cargo planes will undoubtedly bring about plans and installations for a further increase in production of aviation gasoline over the present announced plan. In this connection, Jesse Jones, Reconstruction Finance Corporation Chairman, announced that as of Oct. 31 the R.F.C. had through its subsidiary Defense Plant Corporation entered into contracts for the construction, expansion, or equipping of 28 plants to increase 100-octane aviation gasoline production, but gave no data on 'capacity involved or completion dates. His list did not, of course, include a number of existing plants, and some installations being made by companies who are themselves financing the construction. Production from existing operating installations was materially increased in a number of instances as a result of pooling knowledge of improvements in operation and also by the exchange of Components going into 100-octane blend to enable greater quantities of aviation gasoline to be produced from the over-

THE mining district of São Fidelis, in the northern part of the State of Rio de Janeiro, is situated on the Paraiba River, where it crosses the Serra do Mar (Mountain of the Sea), in the center of a mountainous country having numerous graphitic outcrops. For a long time, these outcrops were irregularly explored by local people, who had little means and no technical advice. A few years ago, the Cia. Brasileira de Mineração de Grafite took over the control of some of the more important outcrops and entrusted to me the task of studying the ores and establishing a flowsheet for a pilot plant to be situated in Sao Fidelis-the ore to be concentrated being mostly of a very high grade. MINERALIZATION AND ORES The rocks of the district are mostly gneiss and crystalline schists, with occasional interstratification of dolomitic limestone belonging to the Archean Brazilian Fundamental Complex. The general direction of the beds is roughly between 60° and 80°E., with variable dip, generally nearly vertical. Mostly, direction and dip of the graphitic outcrops is concordant with the embanking gneisses or schists. These outcrops seem to be aligned in two or three parallel zones (Pádua, São Fidelis, Macabú), the São Fidelis zone being the best known and the most important to date. Two outcrops of the São Fidelis zone, Saudade and São Benedito, are now being exploited. Mining has been carried out, so far, on a small scale. The mineralization consists of a vein of nearly massive graphite in a very compact, partially granitized gneiss, with vertical dip. The vein is most irregular, with nests and lenses irregularly distributed along the fracture plane. The ore consists chiefly (particularly in São Benedito) of massive graphite appearing and disappearing along the main direction of the vein, forming a succession of irregular lenses in a sort of rosary design. The average width is more or less one foot, with variations from zero to 6 feet. The lode minerals are quartz, a little feldspar and garnet (the latter having its origin perhaps in the embedding gneisses), with rare ferruginous clays on the outcrops. In Saudade a little pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite is found occasionally, as well as a carbonaceous mineral, very light, black and shiny, with conchoidal fracture, looking like a sort of jet. The composition of this mineral has not yet been established, but it seems to be very complex. The mineralization seems to be hydrothermal at a rather low temperature, perhaps mesothermal. This paper is in the nature of a rough preliminary report on the progress that has been made in the application of the mass spectrometer to various problems arising in the petroleum industry. A few years ago the authors considered a number of the problems that were arising in the qualitative and quantitative measurement of small amounts of hydrocarbons. The methods available of making analyses by chemical techniques appeared to leave much room for improvement. Without going into the reasons at this point, attention was turned to the possibility of employing physical instead of chemical methods of accomplishing the desired results. A preliminary investigation disclosed that the mass spectrometer presented a possibility of solving many problems which could not easily be accomplished by other methods. Work was begun in developing the necessary apparatus and technique. A great deal of encouragement and many valuable suggestions were received from Dr. Robert A. Millikan, Dr. W. R. Smythe, and Dr. W. N. Lacey, of the California Institute of Technology, and from Dr. E. 0. Lawrence, who recently received the Nobel Prize, of the University of California. The authors particularly wish to acknowledge the very great willingness of these outstanding scientists to be helpful in solving many of the problems that were involved. So far as the authors are aware, this was the first application of the mass spectrometer to commercial work. The results were considerably better than had at first been anticipated. Briefly, it is possible to run a qualitative and quantitative analysis of an unknown mixture of hydrocarbon gases, with an accuracy of better than plus or minus 5 per cent of each of the various constituents. An exceedingly high degree of sensitivity has been obtained, and a relatively short time is required to complete an analysis. Furthermore, it is unnecessary to separate a mixture of gases into its various components in order to complete the analysis. The Mass Spectrometer The mass spectrometer should not be confused in any way with the optical 01 grating type of spectrograph now in general use. The operation of the mass spectrometer is entirely different in principle and bears practically no resemblance to the optical or grating instruments. The original conception and development of the mass spectrometer dates from and is generally credited to Aston, of Cambridge, England. An early accomplishment of his research, about 20 years ago, was the discovery that the inert gas neon was actually a mixture of two kinds of atoms, one of the atomic weight 20 and the other of atomic weight 22. These two components occurred mixed in such proportion as to yield the usual atomic weight of 20.2. In order to explore the possibility of predicting reservoir performance from laboratory data, behavior of a hypothetical low-permeability reservoir has been estimated by applying data and methods currently available in the literature. A method of calculating decline in productivity index is discussed, and recoveries by internal gas drive, external gas drive and water drive are estimated. Introduction During the life of a producing oil property an operator is faced with many perplexing problems. Any attempt to determine proper well spacing, optimum rate of production, or the desirability of pressure maintenance requires the evaluation not only of a host of economic and practical operating factors but also of the future performance of the reservoir. Although in some cases economic or operating con-siderations may be of primary importance in planning a development or production program, the anticipated effect on ultimate recovery is more likely to be the decisive factor. The soundest basis for evaluating reservoir performance is past experience with oil fields, but pertinent data are difficult to obtain or apply under conditions normally encountered in California fields. Many of these fields are characterized by thick sections of alternating sands and shales complicated by faulting and rapidly changing lithologic conditions. Further compli- cations are introduced by haphazard development and production practices resulting from competitive conditions, changing demand for oil, and insufficient knowledge of structural conditions during early development. Even in the rare cases where development has been systematic and adequate, production policy has usually been controlled by economic and competitive factors rather than a desire to obtain information for use in future operations. In other words, comparable reservoirs in which development and production practices have been systematically varied are seldom found. In the light of these conditions, conclusions based on experiences usually lack the certainty required for decisions involving large sums of money. Some other method of attacking these problems is needed to supplement and orient field experience. Progress in laboratory investigations of the flow of oil, gas, and water through sands has been so rapid in recent years that these data may furnish such a supplementary approach in the near future. In order to explore this possibility the author has attempted to predict the behavior of one type of reservoir by applying published data and methods. Basic Data and Assumptions Calculations outlined in this paper are dependent upon a detailed knowledge of the properties of oil, gas, and water present in the reservoir and the portion of the total pore space originally filled by each. It is also necessary to know how the permeability of the sand to oil, gas, and water varies with the saturations of these fluids 20

In my experience, perhaps the most interesting problems came up during the testing, prospecting, developing and equipping of the Chuquicamata and Braden Copper Mines in Chile, and it is proposed in this article to give as briefly as possible what some of those problems were, their solutions, and the decisions made as to the different methods to be employed. The romance of mining is still a great lure to the young man who is making a choice of a profession to follow. The thought of travel to strange and out-of-the-way places, the glamor of pioneer life, the excitement of discovery, the constructive work of building something, entirely "from the grass roots up," or of reconstructing a played-out property and making a success of it-all of these phases have a strong appeal and often influence the young man in the choice of mining as a profession. All manuscripts intended for presentation at the February meeting of the Institute must be in the hands of the Secretary of the Institute not later than Monday, Nov. 23, 1914. This is the date at which the manuscript must be in the hands of the Secretary, and is not the mailing date upon which it leaves the author's hands. In case manuscripts are sent to members of Technical Committees, they must be in the hands of the Technical Committee a sufficient time in advance of Nov. 23 so that they may be in the hands of the Secretary on the date indicated.

The approach proposed in this paper is, as stated by the authors, an update of methods well discussed in the literature. The authors are to be congratulated for their excellent effort in quantifying a difficult problem with realistic cost data. Economic analysis of the components of a mine ventilation system is complicated by both the dynamic nature of the system and the uncertainty as to the time when system changes occur. We wish to address three specific areas of this paper which require further consideration: shaft designed air capacity, shaft location, and economic criteria used within the analysis
